Love at first swipe By Amanda Gaines @thedbk For The Diamondback Students no longer have to rely on parties or bars to score a steamy hookup — that’s so last decade. College hookup culture has gone viral. Students can find everything from one-night stands to long-lasting relationships with the tap of the download button on any smartphone. Tinder, Down and LuLu are among the apps that are making sex by smartphone possible. Synchronized with Facebook, Tinder finds its users’ matches based on location and looks. Users are given a selection of Facebook pictures of their potential matches and are then able to swipe each photo to the left
or right, depending on whether the picture of the match given meets the user’s standards. This app is different in that its users don’t have to fear rejection. However, for some Tinder users, rejection is replaced with a feeling of disturbance.
“In general, after you match with someone, the first thing they ask is when they can meet you, which is kind of creepy,” said Taylor D., a junior history major who asked not to have her last name used. “I barely knew the guy, and he already wanted to meet me.” Another popular app, Down, formerly known as Bang With Friends in Apple’s app store, allows users to find Facebook friends who are
“down” to hook up. Unlike Tinder, this app strictly pairs up people who want to skip the dinner date and small talk and go straight to the bedroom. As with Tinder, users are given Facebook pictures of potential partners. After viewing those pictures, there are two options to choose from: “up to hang” or “I’m down.” The dif-

Keeping the ‘safe’ in sex By Grace Toohey @thedbk For The Diamondback With college comes sex and sexual health education and awareness efforts. Jenna Beckwith, the sexual health education program coordinator at the University Health Center, works to educate students about sexual health and
suggests safer situations within students’ parameters. Whether students have questions about barrier methods, performance, birth control or other sexual topics, Beckwith — also the coordinator of the university’s Sexual Health and Reproductive Education — has the answers. Here are her tips for anyone thinking about or engaging in any sexual experience.

Become educated When students come in for consultations or talk to SHARE peer educators, Beckwith ensures the conversation is always inclusive. The goal isn’t to shame students but instead to empower them to become a little safer, she said. “It is sad when I see students who were engaging in behavior and so unaware of the risks and having these consequences,” Beckwith said. From the fountain on McKeldin Mall to parking lots to dorm showers, students seem to partake in sexual escapades just about everywhere. Although the stacks of McKeldin Library and various places on the mall have long made the list of des-
tination on-campus hookup spots, some Terps get even more creative when they’re getting busy. “I did it in a car in the visitor’s parking lot,” said Ambra, a freshman community health major. Although hookup locales spanned the entire campus, car hookups were among the most common that students recounted, with Mowatt Lane Garage garnering several mentions. Communicate Beckwith said it’s essential for students to communicate expectations, desires and comfort levels.
“Communication is with yourself and with your partners,” she said. She recommended having those sometimes-difficult conversations with a potential partner before it is too late. This includes any STIs, types of protection and what the potential hookup will mean for both people. “I think a lot of students don’t know it’s OK to have that conversation before,” Rego said. One of the key elements of sexual communication is consent, or making sure both parties want the same things from the interaction. “Consent is the most basic needed element when it comes to sexual health and sexual responsibility,” Beckwith said. “The potential consequences are
