RATING COLLEGE PARK’S ASIAN CUISINE

By Warren Zhang @auberginecow Senior staff writer With similar names, signs and menus, College Park’s many Asian restaurants can be hard to tell apart. But these are worth a shot:

Pho D’Lite Pho D’Lite isn’t the best pho joint in the county — that would be Pho 88 past Ikea — but it’s certainly the best within walking distance of the campus, and it’s a very pleasant place to enjoy a meal.

The signature Pho D’Lite offers a good mix of textures paired with hearty broth, and vermicelli bowls are great for the hot months; they’re a fresher, lighter take on standard Asian takeout.

The service and ambiance at Pho D’Lite are a serious cut above most other area Asian restaurants.

most of what Shanghai Cafe has to offer — there are a few authentic Chinese dishes, but results are scattershot. Dining in is a considerably less endearing experience, but delivery is quick and reliable.

of convenience — it’s a one-stop shop for bubble tea, froyo and tasty Japanese morsels. Wasabi offers plenty of combos and box meals for value-seeking Terps, as well as the deliciously unique sushi pizza.

Appetizers are also tasty — check out the crunchy, savory scallion cake and crispy pork gyoza.

Almost all of them (I’m looking at you, Seven Seas) are decent, but few are as remarkably consistent as Shanghai Cafe when it comes to cooking up greasy General Tso’s chicken or murky hot and sour soup. At some point, though, you’ll have to come to terms with the fact that college is a place to get a degree, which generally requires some work and studying. So when you’ve settled into campus life and can’t escape the inevitable reality of homework and exams, you’ll want to find places on the campus that help you perform to the best of your ability.

It takes some trial and error, but fortu nately, I have th ree years of experience to tell you the best study and work spots on and around the campus.

Whether you’re writing a paper, completing an assignment or studying for an exam you’re totally unprepared for, The Diamondback has got you covered.

BACK OF HORNBAKE BASEMENT McKeldin Library is the beautiful building showcased in all the campus brochures and pictures.

But just a five-minute walk away is Hornbake Library, which, fortunately for you, is often forgotten about or overlooked.

Hornbake is far quieter than McKeldin and sometimes nearly empty — an almost eerie hidden gem on the campus. And few people know about the back of the basement, which has a nice view of a small courtyard and spacious tables to lay out textbooks, laptops, calculators, notebooks and whatever else you may be carrying in your arsenal.

As an added bonus, many of the chairs rock and are big enough to shift position in as you grow tired, bored and irritated with whatever you’re working on. Because of its near silence (most of the time), this spot is best for intense exam studying, lab reports, long papers due within hours and difficult homework assignments.

TOP FLOORS OF MCKELDIN LIBRARY Everyone flocks to the second floor, which is regularly remodeled and easily accessible. But during midterms and finals, it often feels more like a crowded coffee shop than a library. Those who were around this past spring may remember a YouTube video of a student dancing on the second floor in the midst of finals studying.

Few decide to venture to the fourth floor and above, though, which still has the appropriate books-and-desks library feel while maintaining the perfect level of quiet. And you can always walk a

few steps down to enjoy a bit of a social scene if you’re feeling restless.

Making the most of the meal plan want to be one of them. So try to save money where you can. Grab some salad from the free-toppings EZRA FISHMAN bar. Third, know where the food is good. The pasta bar on South Campus is always a solid choice, and they’ve finally added one to the North Campus Dining Hall as well.

Use all of your 251 North meals. It has an amazing selection, it’s allyou-can-eat, and you’re just going to lose the free meals otherwise.

(People on North Campus have fewer points specifically because they’re supposed to go there every week.) Your best friend is always the buffalo chicken wrap (unless you don’t want to gain weight). Not all late-night meals are equal. (Tuesday

is Tex-Mex and pancakes.)

And the absolute best thing from either dining hall is the stir-fry from Seasons 12 at the South Campus Dining Hall. It’s only open weekdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the lines can take a half hour during peak activity, but if you have enough time at lunch, you want to get it as often as you can. The food there is all of moderate to high quality, the sauces are great, and there are so many options that you can make a new meal every time. I have friends who can write whole papers on the different ways to do stir-fry; you want to be one of them, too.

Finally, and most importantly, know all the ways to avoid dining hall food. You can make friends who have kitchens. You can scout

the events with free foods — I’ve met someone who survives on just those.

You can make meals using your Terp Bucks. You can start working at a local restaurant and eat there. You can get a different job and use your money to eat anywhere. Or you can do the college thing and survive on crates of ramen and tea. If you’re lucky and save a lot of points, you can treat yourself to Adele’s in Stamp Student Union — whatever it takes to get yourself out of the dining halls.

Because in the end, the best thing you can get out of your meal plan is to get out of using your meal plan.
