Grads fight for parental leave By Teddy Amenabar Staff writer Graduate teaching assistants plan to renew their efforts to establish a standard for paid parental leave this semester, a measure GSG members say is necessary in order to begin a family life while balancing work at this university. Recent legislation from the University System of Maryland Board of Regents that gives faculty and staff members guaranteed parental leave spurred Graduate Student Government President David Colon-Cabrera to begin work on a similar plan for all teaching assistants, which he plans to present to university officials in the coming weeks. While graduate students can apply to postpone academics for up to six weeks if they have a child, many teaching assistants said they see inconsistent results when requesting paid leave from assistantships. “I want to make this as public as it can be because it is just an oppressing issue,” said Colon-Cabrera, adding “Every semester there’s graduate students becoming parents.” Under the parental leave policy approved by university President Wallace Loh in October, “departments are encouraged to continue their custom of offering reasonable accommodation to graduate assistants,” and a students’ college or department can determine whether to grant leave based on their individual circumstances. Colon-Cabrera said he wants teaching assistants to instead count on receiving six weeks of leave if they have a child, rather than a “reasonable accomodation,” which varies across the campus based on the resources available to each academic program. “You have to discuss it with your supervisor, and you have to negotiate it in a sense,” Colon-Cabrera said. “It’s not guaranteed that you’ll get the leave, and another thing that’s not guaranteed is that you’re going to get paid during

her current bike. “It’s something I go back and forth with,” Hoaas said of her dilemma regarding upgrading her personal motorcycle. “In a way I want to [keep it] because it’s a different riding style from what I ride at work.” And just like her desire to hold on to that small bike, See MOTORCYCLE, Page 2

Chick-fil-A sees sales increase after protest Although 878 students, alumni and community members had signed a petition, as of yesterday, to remove Chick-fil-A from Stamp Student Union in protest of the company president’s stance on same-sex marriage, the restaurant has seen an increase in sales this year, officials said. More than a month after the petition’s inception, it was still 122 signatures short of its 1,000-signature

New dorm will be gender neutral While the university has renovated some buildings in recent years to expand gender-neutral housing options, more students will be able to choose a dorm specially designed to meet their needs by 2014, Department of Resident Life officials said. Prince Frederick Hall will be genderneutral, Resident Life Associate Director Cindy Felice said during a South Campus community meeting last week, an accommodation that members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community on the campus said

goal. Although those who signed are still hoping it kicks the decade-long food-court fixture from Stamp, officials said removing a restaurant is less a function of signatures than it is a game of business contracts and numbers. According to Stamp Director Marsha Guenzler-Stevens, there’s little else the university can do as long as the restaurant is bringing in money, and Chick-fil-A is one of the most succesful fast-food sellers in the student union. Officials say restaurant is staying in Stamp By Laura Blasey Staff writer

EDITOR’S NOTE: A student’s last name was withheld because she discusses drinking and is underage. Although students worried about how the nightlife scene would change after the old Sante Fe Cafe closed in May 2010, a small white piece of paper on the doors requesting a liquor license alleviated some of those fears. But the scheduled May opening date came and went, and despite a flurry of city and county meetings to acquire necessary permits and alleviate underage drinking

although several hundred students protested to have Chick-fil-A removed from Stamp Student Union, officials said the restaurant has seen increased sales and isn’t going anywhere. charlie deboyace/the diamondback
