Life sustaining, essential and fast becoming a resource that will plunge economies around the world into crisis. Which is why every drop we use in our homes is precious and should be accounted for. Blip is a conceptual system where real time weather data recommends a daily water usage amount for your home. A learning flow sensor that can be installing just by screwing on externally to an existing pipe, ‘listens’ to all water activity happening around your home using ultra-sound technology.

The in- situ displays, installed throughout the home as you wish will provide real time feedback on water usage and prompts you on where you stand with your daily water goal. So that with help from Blip, the next time we brush our teeth we might turn the faucet off.

Problems and Insights In the US, more than 89% of adults (BI Intelligence) are using the internet to speed up their lives through instant access of information and purchasing power. in 2017, the sales in e-commerce has grown to 800 billion dollars, and expected to grow up to 1 trillion dollars in 2020 (BI Intelligence). However, although there are benefits to this purchasing system, other problems have arisen. The rate of package theft and loss has increased annually while delivery officials are unsure as to what the optimal secure drop-off location would be when the inhabitants are not at home.

Through research and concept prototyping, three insights were chosen as the focus to address the needs of both delivery workers and reciptients. Packages should be delivered close to the household, storage of delivery package(s) must be secure but only accessible by the delivery officials and the homeowners and a new system of user experience that can be managed by both homeowners and delivery officials needs to be established.

homebox is a security box built both inside and outside of a personal home to store delivery packages and prevent package theft, damage and, loss. homebox is also a delivery system that is correlated to homebox app that tracks the package and alerts the user when the package has been delivered.

1. The delivery officials scans the tracking ID via a nfc reader located at the top of the homebox frame.

2. When the tracking ID is verified, the homebox frontdoor opens to allow the delivery officials to deposit the package inside.

In the US, studs for houses and apartements are usually spaced 16 or 24 inches apart. homebox is designed to fit between each studs to unharm the architecture of the structure.

3. The weight sensor identifies that the package(s) is inside homebox and a notification is sent to the user’s smartphone.

Users can simply receive their package(s) by opening the homebox’s backdoor.

The homebox app is a comfortable way to manage package delivery.

The app shows the incoming delivery via tracking IDs that are given by the delivery services. When the packages are delivered safely inside the homebox, users receive a notification as the weight sensor inside the box identifies that the package is inside the homebox.

‘Rain Garden’ Scottsdale Canal Convergence 2018

‘Rain Graden’ is an interactive installtion piece. Users experience the sensation of walking through a field of rain drops suspended in time, and are invited to brush their hand through the reeds that light up blue as they walk through.

The overarching goal of the project was to explore the + the storm experience of the Phoenix area’s iconic monsoon storms through interactive installations or “artifacts.”

Through research at Tonalea K-8 (Scottsdale) we gathered data on how people in the area experience monsoons, and feedback from the students was used as inspiration for the interactions we created.

Our goal was to create an experience that would create childlike joy in users of all ages.

how it works There are two chairs. One triggers the lightning strike with the push of a button. A random pause occurs and then the thunder hits the other chair. The thunder lasts for about 9 seconds and then the interaction restarts.

theme The overarching theme for our class’s exhibit at Canal convergence was a storm. This is because storms bring people together for better or for worse because they build communities.

Within this theme, we decided to convey the story of watching storms in the distance and counting the seconds between lightning strike and thunder. This is an educational and fun experience that brings back memories of childhood.

research We were able to visit the Tonalea Middle School twice to engage with 150 middle school students about community, water and storms! We did many exercises with them to understand how they feel about storms.

One of the exercises was to recreate a storm using classroom products.

This showed us how the students think creatively and what they used to recreate sounds. We also sat down and talked with them in groups to learn about activities they do before, during and after storms. These stories gave us inspiration for interactions we could create.

design & prototyping Before even begining the form development we devloped our idea from a simple inspiration from counting the time between lightning and thunder, into chairs where people could sit and share the enjoyment of this experience. We inintially prototyped this idea with a camera flash and a blue tooth speaker taped to the bottom of a chair. With out idea locked down we began to devlop our form but quickly realized that, with a budget of only $300 and two weeks to make and install our chairs, we had to keep the design as simple as possible.

We used IKEA chairs because we needed a cost-effective and time efficient way to make two translucent plastic chairs that would hold up against thousands of users.

When designing the chairs we tried to keep the building to a minimum, as time was of the essence. The building was therefore fairly simple. We laser cut and CNC milled the polypropylene sheet and bolted the cutouts into the chairs. We made the base out of plywood and added a coating of waterproof paint to protect it. The final, and most complicated part of this build, was the electronics and coding. We started with little to no experience in either discipline but learnt a lot with some help from our engineering friends. We created an electrical circuit that connected our lights and speaker system to power, from a car battery, and to our control board, a raspberry pi. We then coded the interaction on the raspberry pi using python.

an interactive art installation featured in Scottsdale Public Art’s Canal Convergence 2018 event

This educational micro-experience interation focuses on the concept of “working for water”. It features an iconic water pump and an array of water bottles. By operating the pump, the water bottles symbolically “fill up” one by one as indicated by an illumination underneath each of the vessels.

Collaborating with the master of interior architecture students and a local public school, we created an interactive artifact that represents community and water.

This project was part of an installation at the annual Scottsdale Canal Convergence event.

COMMUNITY + WATER The community aspect of our project was the influence of the Tonalea students saying that they liked to jump in puddles during an Arizona storm.

DISCOVERY + INTUITION The discovery part would be that each panel lights up as if you just stepped on a puddle. For adults, there is an extra “rediscovery” aspect, because a game of hopscotch is something nostalgic that will bring them back to their childhood.

PLAY + INTERACTION The interactive part of our concept is the hopscotch game, a motif and activity that transcends both age and culture.

Because of this, many people were able to participate without having the concept explained to them.

Practice vs. Performance When practicing any type of skill, there is an end goal in mind. With guitar, this is to perform your music live. However, the common method of practicing sitting down puts your body in a position different than when performing. This not only causes bad habits while playing, but due to the body position it does not allow the player to practice in a way that correctly simulates a live performance.
