welcome… How time flies! It’s that time of the year for the new Stansted Directory. What a success the Directory has been! Local people are in contact with local businesses. ‘Think LocalBuy Local’ is now not just a strapline but a reality. The Stansted Business Forum has now over 70 business members and is probably the largest local networking group. The Directory was born from a genuine desire to promote local businesses with the support of parish and district councillers. The SBF and the directory are a success and were showcased at the recent annual Uttlesford Business Network meeting held at the Hilton Hotel Stansted. The Summer Fayre has been and gone. Another huge success not only for local businesses but for the community as a whole. s a nation we love travelling and taking our holidays abroad. But the Foreign and Commonwealth Office are concerned that as many as four million of us are heading overseas each year without adequate travel insurance. Another survey revealed that nearly one in five of us thinks that an EHIC (the European Health Insurance card – the old E111) makes travel insurance redundant. Not true! Your travel insurance policy should cover you for: medical and health cover for an injury or sudden illness abroad; 24 hour English speaking emergency assistance; personal liability cover; cancellation and curtailment and for lost or stolen possessions.

Housing shortage
T
he UK housing market has been anything but typical this year. At the bottom of the ladder, soaring prices are preventing a younger generation from being able to buy their own homes, while those who already own are finding it hard to stretch their income to afford a larger property. A typical house is now almost nine times the average salary. “A recent property that has just sold had 26 viewings on the open day and 12 offers� Meanwhile, at the top of the ladder, older homeowners are struggling to downsize because there are not enough properties to suit their needs. At the heart of the problem is a housing shortage. It has been an issue on the lips of policymakers for years, and is finally coming to a head. To cater for our growing population, we need to build at least 220,000 new homes every year, according to the Home Builders
Federation. But in the 12 months to June 2015, we built only 131,060. The Government has vowed to build one million new homes by the end of this parliament. Local councils have been ordered to draw up plans that set out how many new houses are needed in their area and identify possible sites for building. As an example of the market conditions – a property in Stansted that has just sold had 26 viewings on the open day and 12 offers. It shows the strength of purchasers and the lack of property available. Different markets require different strategies and this market requires the vendor to be bold otherwise they will be in a poor position when new houses come on to the market. The British fireplace
T
he British fireplace has evolved and adapted to suit our style of living and fuel use. For many hundreds of years the heart of the home was the fireplace, providing cooking facilities, hot water and heating in one central room. The Industrial Revolution made coal increasingly popular – traditional firewood was too bulky and cumbersome to transport through the densely populated cities. However coal was energy dense and easily carried in sacks, so the new canal network was perfect for delivering hundreds of tons of coal directly into the cities. Fireplaces changed to suit this new fuel, becoming smaller and often more decorative. In Victorian times cast iron insets or baskets in reduced fireplace openings replaced the large open wood fires. “The heart of the home was the fireplace, providing cooking facilities, hot water and heating” Open coal fires are less desirable in today’s home. The fuel is quite dirty, produces lots of toxic ash and considered non-environmentally friendly. Many people want to convert back to wood because the environmental impact is balanced by regrowth of trees and the actual fire looks better. The age of your home may not match the style of it’s fireplaces, as

fashions changed the fires were often upgraded every few decades. Up until the 1970s it was inconceivable that homes be built without one, but with the introduction of North Sea gas many developers opted for simple gas fires instead. The good news is that modern woodburning stoves or gas fires can be easily accommodated and installed, often without too many changes. There are many options available; small inset woodburners or gas fires that fit straight into the existing opening or the choice to open out a fireplace to suit a free-standing stove.
