Highlighting series of failure in governing the University Student Government (USG), former Vice-President Khyrwin Hidalgo filed an impeachment complaint against ex-president Dann Sarte last January 7, 2019.

Hidalgo’s two-page complaint contained events citing Sarte’s poor performances, including seven absences during important USG meetings, failure to establish the committees necessary for the functions of his office, and general negligence of Sarte to his duties.

In an interview, Hidalgo furthered that starting second

semester, Sarte has cut his communication with them. He also stated that Sarte has not spoken with the administration about this, or if he did, he failed to inform the USG. Meanwhile, DSA Kim Bigay responded, “Honestly, during

“Nakikita natin na ang pangulo natin ay iniidolo talaga si Marcos -- binabalik kung ano yung nakagawian, kung ano yung pamamalakad ni Marcos,” dagdag pa ni Ampongan. Giit pa niya, hindi na bago sa lipunan at hindi na bumebenta sa kabataan ang mga isyung dinaraanan ng taong-bayan sa panahon ngayon, at ang baon nilang isyu ay suliranin na rin sa administrasyong Marcos.

some when he would not give reasons, like I would text him and inquire to him about certain matters, he would not respond.”

On the other hand, Sarte answered these accusations. “...I am on the process of deciding to file my resignation during the start of 2nd sem. Hanggang sa tumagal ng tumagal. And finocus ko muna ang sarili ko sa academics more than the time of thinking of my problem. Para di na ako kainin pa. Suddenly naging parang I’m running away

from my responsibilities,” Sarte pointed out.

Sarte also shared that he was not able to take in the criticisms given to him which lead to his lackluster behavior until he felt like he was running away from his responsibilities.

When asked about his absences, he also reasoned out his intention to resign from office.

However, the impeachment case did not push through, as Sarte decided to file his resignation.

Through succession, Hidalgo took over the presidency while Marc Emman Huit assumed the VP position as appointed by the Student Congress.

After assuming his new position, Hidalgo said that he is in coordination with Huit for the remaining months of the academic year as USG faces budget issues, “I won’t say the amount, pero it’s too little na for us.”

UNCeans set fire on socmed over TOFI USG Elections...

After UNC’s turnover to Ayala Education in 2015, consecutive tuition and other fees increase had happened -- twice in tuition, and four times in miscellaneous fees.

With the next school year about to follow the sequential hike, a number of UNCeans cried “enough.”

“UNC is 5G: Great education, Great experience, Great choice, Great careers and jobs in the future, and Great YOU,” president Dr. Fay Lea Patria Lauraya exclaims, introducing her speech during January 26th’s Tuition and Other Fees Increase (TOFI) Consultation.

As proposals and plans for the next academic years were demonstrated, the UNC administration’s 5% tuition and 7% miscellaneous fees increase proposal was raised, and it was favored by 38 people from the consultation body after other proposals were raised -- 3% increase for both fee categories proposed by a PTC member; and 10% tuition and 8% miscellaneous fees increase proposed by Engr. Balaquiao, which was later pulled back from the list.

Presented as well to the consultation body are the accomplishments made by the UNC administration for this academic year 2018-2019.

VPAA Nora Elizabeth Maniquiz, VPSAS Dr. Armin Fullante, Ph.D, and VPAF Eleanor Salumbre highlighted in their reports the successful projects and plans for the year, such as the Flipped Classrooms, Culminating Business Project, and Professional Employment Program.

However, hours after the news went out on social media, negative reactions and comments of the students were posted. Majority of comments emphasized the complaints about how they perceive the services given by the administration -- the inefficiency of the facilities and the infrastructure problems; and that they were not proportional to how much they pay for the year.

“Not of school, but of cash,” commented by one student, which gained 146

reactions. Other comments in the same section explicitly assert transferring to other schools because of this.

Overall, the idea was bashed by the students inside and outside social media.

In the midst of these comments, The DEMOCRAT collated all grievances and submitted it to the office of VPSAS fullante who pledged that the administration will read through and consider all feedback given by enraged students and parents.

Ayon naman sa Article VI Section 3, kailangang nakapagtapos na ang tatakbo ng tatlong semestre na may 45 units, at isang semestre na may 20 units para sa transferee.

Para kay Chrisine Joy A. Burce mula sa BUGKOS, ito rin ang naging isa sa mga dahilan kung bakit hindi sila nakakuha ng tatakbo bilang pangulo.

“Isa sa mga kinakailangan para makapag-apply ay kailangang may three semesters na nakapag-aral ka sa Unibersidad. Karamihan ng mga nakakamit nito ay marahil graduating na kaya nahihirapan sila na makapaghanap ng makukuha na tatakbo sa pagkapresidente,” ani Burce.

Hinayag naman ni Christine Ann Rabano, SEC Chairperson ang dahilan kung bakit walang nakuhang tatakbo bilang presidente ang partido YLAW. “Actually same reason with BUGKOS party, may mga potential student leaders silang target, but not willing because of acads, already affiliated with higher positions in their organizations, etc.”

Hinirang bilang kampiyon ang kinatawan ng University of Nueva Caceres (UNC) na sina Art Jun Sumalinog (1st Year, AB Political Science) at Dioma Francis Durante (College of Law) na nakakuha ng gantimpalang Finals Best Speaker sa naganap na Bicol Debate Open (BDO) IV, January 25-28.

Ang nasabing patimpalak ay mayroong dalawang division - ang Open Break na bukas sa lahat at siyang main cup, at (2) High School Cup na para naman sa mga High School teams na hindi kwalipikado para sa Open Break.

Ito ay nilahukan ng iba’tibang unibersidad at state colleges: University of Sto. Tomas (UST) na kaisa ng San Beda University, University of the Philippines (UP) - Los Baños, Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA), Naga College Foundation (NCF) BED, Universidad de Sta. Isabel (USI) - Main Campus, Ateneo de Naga University (ADNU) na binubuo ng College at Junior High School, St. Louise de Marillac College of Sorsogon, University of Saint Anthony (Senior High School at Junior High School), at UNC na binubuo naman ng College, Senior High School at Junior High School.

Noong ika-30 ng Disyembre, 2018, humigit kumulang 128,000 katao ang naapektuhan sa 26 na probinsiya sa Region V, VIII, CALABARZON, at MIMAROPA at mahigit 13,000 katao ang nanunuluyan sa 112 na inihandang evacuation centers.

Dahil dito, nagsagawa ng malawakang paghahanap at pagsasalba ng mga hindi mabilang na nawawalang residente ang mga rescue teams ng bansa. Ngunit mas labis na napinsala ang mga rehiyon ng Bicol at Eastern Visayas dahil sa malawakang pagbaha kasama ang pagguho ng lupa sa mga kabundukan na naging sanhi ng pagkamatay ng ilang mga residente.

Sa datos na inilabas ng National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) noong ika-30 ng Disyembre umaabot sa 122 ang namatay, 28 pa rin ang nawawala habang 60 ang sugatan sanhi ng malakas na baha na umabot hanggang ulo at pagguho ng lupa sa kabundukan.

Umaga ng parehong araw, idineklara ng Philippine National Police (PNP) sa Bikol ang 105 na namatay.

Sa datos na inilabas, makikitang sa probinsiya ng Camarines Sur ang may pinakamataas na bilang ng namatay na umabot sa 57, habang sa karatig-lalawigan ng Albay ay merong 18, samantala sa Camarines Norte naman ay 15, sa Sorsogon ay 8 at sa Masbate ay 7. This academic year was rough for the University Student Government.

Who would have thought that what we expected to be a symbolic union of Bugkos and YLAW will actually make history – not for an extremely notable project, but for the first ever impeachment complaint against a USG President.

As if this isn’t rock bottom yet for student leadership in our campus, we received another blow with the absence of any candidate for the presidential race.

Seeking “us” in USG

B

ut there’s one good thing about hitting rock bottom – there’s only one way, up.

Political parties can’t just stand for their standard bearers only when it’s convenient. In the 2018 USG Elections, they’ve boasted of comprehensive General Plan of Actions only to have it mostly unfulfilled a whole term later. They’ve promised to be more active outside the election season only to have such added the list of their barren pledges.

It’s time to hold our student leaders to the highest standards. Conducting already institutionalized activities is just the bare minimum. We need to ask – what do they stand for? What are they willing to fall for?

UNCeans have a whole world to win – halting excessive increases in tuition and miscellaneous fees, acknowledgement of the LGBT community’s inherent liberties, protection of student publications from press repression, a n d stable defense for overall student rights and welfare. We need leaders, not mere event organizers.

It’s time to demand accountability from political parties and student leaders under their care. The job of Bugkos and YLAW doesn’t end at simply searching for potential candidates and campaigning for them.

Team building activities are far from enough. Constant trainings on communication and interpersonal skills, along with immersion in students’ struggles must be the norm. When elected, student leaders can’t just flash a smile in the face of student welfare violations.

They’ll be debating against concerned admin officials, c r a f t i n g resolutions and proposals amidst pressure, taking action on sensitive student

grievances. These are matters that takes more than charm. It calls for courage.

This year, The DEMOCRAT have been applauded for making a stand for the student body, often taking action on student grievances. An admin member thanked us for going beyond what is expected of student journalists, even covering the responsibilities that should be of a student council. However, we find it hard to fully accept these praises, for it should’ve never been a competition between USG and us. The fact that ordinary student organizations and publications have conducted more impactful projects than USG must be a wake-up call to YLAW and Bugkos. Don’t just be sorry.

I was told for countless times that I should run for organizations. To be a leader, as most would say. People would often reason out that my standings in class and my holistic academic performance are enough to earn me a seat for leadership. But to tell you, it’s not.

W

hat I’m trying to say is that being a leader and being good in class are two separate things. Although, I do not place out of consideration that there are similar traits between being the former and the latter. But I would be firm to say, being a top gunner does not automatically equate to being a good leader.

I would sound stupid though if I tell you that being smart is not a tool for leadership. It is essential. If you are smart, you can deal with situations logically.

You can have the vision to predict future failures and be strategic enough to plot necessary plans. You can solve pressing problems within a shorter span of time.

Basically, that big brain is no doubt a great tool to have a functional governing body, but there is so much more to just being smart when it comes to leadership.

Allow me to share important insights from one of my classes.

It was said that to be a leader one

na, pagpasok mo pa lamang sa tarangkahan ng unibersidad obal, masasalubong mo na sila. Oo, yung mga guwardiyang may pinapapasok na mga estudyante kahit walang I.D basta kilala nila. Tama naman na hindi nila pinapayagang makalusot ang mga nakaripped jeans, pero bakit yung mga nakapaldang halos dalawang dangkal lang ang sukat na sa madaling salita subrang iksi ay pinapalampas, tapos sasabihin palda daw kasi yun, eh anong pinagkaiba noon sa butas-butas na kasuutan sa ibinabalandrang hita? Ano ito? May favoritism?

Lahat naman po nagbabayad ng matrikula ah? Maging patas ka, at kung maghihigpit, sa lahat naman sana, hindi yung may pinipili ka.

Pangalawa, nakapalibot sila sa buong gusali ng paaralan natin. Habang naglalakad ka, nadadaanan mo sila. Tumingala ka, nakadikit sa pader. Mismo, yung mga wifi tinutukoy ko.

Naranasan mo na bang makakonek dito? Ako, oo, ramdam na ramdam ko nga ang EDSA eh, natrapik ang koneksiyon ng internet bes. Hindi na masasalba buhay ng takdang aralin mo kapag naghahabol ka ng oras.

Diba magtataas na naman ang bayaran sa matrikula natin sa susunod na pasukan?

But to be an efficient leader, we need to break these walls. There has to be the capacity to adapt to varying situations that comes along with being a leader. And again, not everyone has the capability to easily blend with diverse situations. We are just way too terrified to try something new, which lead me to the next pointer.

To be a leader means to be courageous. Courageous in such a way that he is ready to take risks during wise decisions, yet courageous enough to face the people in his times of shortcoming and adversities. One must also have the guts to stand firm for what he believes in, but also has the bravery to accept his defeat and misconceptions. That courage to face new and unpredictable things must waver for someone not to break too easily.

Communication is also key to leadership. If you are a leader, you have

You must hear from other people in the very same manner that you should be able to tell them what your mind portrays. Because being a leader is not about you, it deals with the masses.

Communication is the missing link to transcend these collaborative ideas for the greater good. And as the leader, you must fill that missing link.

Enthusiasm should also fuel a leader’s soul. The drive to serve the people should last until your term.

We don’t need leaders who only show passion during elections. We need someone filled with the fire to fulfill his duties and obligation, not someone who just show up during convenient favorable times or whenever he just feels like to be exposed.

Leaders should also have a quiet confidence. Someone who knows what he is doing and shows humble intentions of accomplishing goals. Let us be done

with leaders who see themselves way superior over the others. Overconfidence only breaks the communication that should bind leaders with the people. We need someone who we can approach and raise our concerns with. We do not need leaders who are too full of themselves that draws the distance beyond our reach.

These are only some of how ideal and not only smart leaders should be. If you’re aspiring to be a leader, learn to understand the weight of responsibilities you are to carry upon your shoulder. Set aside your personal goals and be objective. Assess whether you possess the qualities of an efficient leader that you want to have. Be the new kind of different in the system that has met countless leaders who have fallen short to serve their purpose.

Elections are drawing near and campaigns are widespread.

Let us turn to be wiser voters this time. Do not limit a single trait as a basis to choose a candidate. Being smart is not enough, and so is being kind or whatnot. Leaders should possess mixture of traits that would make them suitable to run a body. Do not let them play you.

After all, the same things happen during elections, do not play blind.

Magpatuloy sa pagbasa. sa gitna. Oo, yung propesor mong nagbigay ng proyektong oil based paint sa asignaturang Educational Technology bilang pinal na requirement. Ayon sa isang nakapanayam ko, bukod sa malayo ang koneksiyon sa asignaturang pinag-aaralan, mahal din ang midyum na pinapagamit nito sa paggawa ng nasabing proyekto. Sa pagkakaalam ko, layunin ng Educational Technology na mahasa ang kaalaman ng mga mag-aaral sa pagtuturo sa pamamagitan ng teknolohiya.

Pero bakit nagmistulang Arts Class na to?

Iwasan sana nila yung pagbibigay ng ganong klaseng gawain lalo na ang layo naman talaga sa asignatura. Dagdag gastos lang ‘yun eh.

Minsan ka na rin bang napadaan sa ginagawang gusali ngayon, sa pagitan ng Electronic Library at gusali ng Junior High School? Naroon po ang ikalimang uri ng aswang na kung saan nakakapagsalita sila.

Sasabihin sayo, “oy! miss ang ganda mo”, “Hi ate! “ at ang iba naman “psst!“ lang ang nililikhang tinig. Akalain mo yun, marunong sila ng cat calling. Panawagan po sa mga

nangangasiwa sa mga manggagawa o mga construction worker natin diyan, maaari lamang po na pagbawalang makiusap sa mga estudyante lalo na hindi naman po kailangan, nakakatakot po kasi. Parang may planong masama ukol sayo, yung pakiramdam na aabangan ka paglabas mo ng paaralan, nakakakilabot diba?

Binabati kita at nakarating ka sa huling talata, maraming salamat sa pagbabasa.

Ngayon alam mo na kung ano at sino-sino ang mga aswang sa Unibersidad ng Nueva Caceres. Isa ka rin ba sakanila? Mabuti kung hindi at kung oo, magbago ka na. Mas masaya kasing maging tao kaysa mabilang sa mga aswang. Lalong mas gaganda ang pagaaral kung mas mapayapa, yung wala kang inaalalang takot dala ng mga nabanggit na aswang. Bawasan natin ang kilabot sa mahal nating paaralan.

Paalala: Hindi ko binanggit na lahat ng guwardiya, estudyante, propesor, mga manggagawa ganun ah? Sa iilan lamang.

W e c a r r y the weight of choosing leaders who are deserving of our trust and leaders that can propagate a healthy community within the university.

BUGKOS and YLAW go way back 15 years of elected officials under its banner without strong records of tangible legacies and principles, which makes it hard to make actual comparisons of its development or the lack thereof. That is why according to the former USG Vice President Michael Angelo Boaquin their term’s greatest achievement was the documentation activities and the detailed financial report. In which he added, “It is what we think was lacking in student leadership during our time, the transparency everybody was looking for” which is now made easier by social media like Facebook or Twitter that makes the activities of the USG accessible to the public.

YLAW and BUGKOS have a l w a y s b e e n great

with t h e i r slogans and their promises, but lack the actual work to take them from words to actual projects. For 15 years, we can only hear about the political parties when it is time for election but forget the platforms and promises they made when they are still on the running thus the stagnant rate of creating an effective progress. This is the dilemma year by year, “Nag-paparamdam lang yang mga yan pag eleksyon” a dilemma that should already be resolved throughout the years but seems to be a continuing issue for the USG. The party’s ideals and principles shall go beyond the election period.

“I should say that there is a development in the USG. Each set of leaders has contributed to the progress the organization have now.”

Boaquin remarked. Throughout the years we can see change coming from the organization, the USG did improve slowly which was made easier by social media, they got to listen to the students more and more students heard them. The organization started to have better ways of communicating directly to students relaying information by pub mats and announcements may it be for events, class suspensions or special holidays that celebrate religion of all sorts and throughout the years better implementations of pro student events.

In the USG 2018 Elections, it was remarkable for both YLAW and BUGKOS to release

detailed General Plan of Actions (GPOA).

This was backed by the pledge of both parties to be more active outside the election season. A year later, we witnessed little to none of the items under their GPOA was actualized. Moreover, both parties ironically became less active even during the campaign period itself.

“Sa five years ko sa UNC, yung kanila Juvin ang pinaka effective in terms of implementation ng activities na pro students” which I actually agree with for my 3 year stay here in the University, the organization showed overall inclusion of the students through events like “Pride March” and with projects like “Give Blood Give Life” and “Red Ribbon Run” they are extending their jobs to helping not only the university but the community outside of it as well the term did not hesitate to fight against what is right and what will be beneficial for the students standing as the voice of the people who cannot speak up for themselves, tackling important issue of the community but not forgetting to create enjoyable events like the very first ACLASS. But all of this aside, we can really say that the USG’s development and success almost ultimately depends on the leader.

When asked about the recent USG organization one student commented “Hindi ko sila kilala (USG officers) mas malala pa dun hindi ko naramdaman na andyan s i l a ”

which proves that the Organization has its highs and lows, although striving to make everything go as planned the events aren’t as well prepared.

“It was a risk electing them (Sarte and Hidalgo) considering one is an architecture student and the other, a graduating engineering student” according to another student. It was evident that the leader has a say in what we call “development” in the organization rather than comparing the situation to a ladder it is way fair to say that it is like a sound wave.

Another year, another set of candidates. The election month started off with a feeling of uncertainty considering the fact that there was no candidate running for presidency and had only one running for the position of vice-president.

May we not only hear promises but together experience the joys and comfort of actually seeing them come to life.

...Handa Sa karagdagang impormasyong naiulat ng Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), 680,000 na katao ang nasalanta ng nasabing bagyo. 55 porsyento nito ay matatagpuan sa rehiyon ng Bicol at 42 porsyento naman ay naitala sa rehiyon ng Eastern Visayas. Malaking bahagin ng pinsala sa Bicol ay nanggaling lamang sa Camarines Sur. Isa na rito ang pagkakaroon ng daan upang maipahayag ng iba’t ibang kandidata ang kani-kanilang plataporma.

Nagiging daan na rin daw ito upang magawa ng mga naggagandahang binibini ang nais nilang gawin sa ating bansa. Halos nagkakahawig ang papel ng isang pageant sa pagtakbo sa senado. Kung saan nais ding ipahayag ng mga politiko ang kanilang plataporma’t pangako, pati na rin ang kanilang gustong mga gawin na

proyekto sa ating bansa.

Pagkakahawig: Sa isang pageant, ikaw ay makapagpapahayag ng iyong mga ideya sa pamamaraan ng mga press conference na ginaganap upang mas makilala ng madla ang isang kandidata. Gayon din sa pagtakbo para sa posisyon sa senado. Hindi nga lang ito ginaganap upang makilala natin ang mga politiko, ginaganap ito upang maipakita nila sa atin ang kanilang pagbabalatkayo.

Isa ding pagkakahawig nila ang pagkakaroon ng badyet na kailangan gastusin upang mapaganda ang programa ng isang pageant at upang maging maayos at maisakatuparan ang isang matagumpay na kampanya ng isang politiko.

Nakasaad lamang sa Konstitusyon ng Pilipinas na kailangan lamang isang natural born citizen ang ibig tumakbo, hindi bababa ang edad sa 35 taong gulang sa araw ng eleksyon, nakakapagbasa at nakakapagsulat, isang rehistradong botante ng bansa at isang residente ng Pilipinas na ‘di bababa sa dalawang taon ang bilang ng paninirahan sa bansa.

Pagtatanto: Ilang buwan na lang, tayo’y maghahalal na naman ng mga tao sa senado. May karapatan daw tayong bumoto ng sino man na ibig nating maluklok sa pwesto. Tayo’y may kalayaan na pumili ng kandidato na gustong manalo – ngunit, ngayong taon kaya, gising na ba tayo’t mulat?

Hindi sa pisikal na anyo ni Bong o sa pangako ni Juan na “Gusto ko happy ka!” ang pagbabatayan? Hindi na ba magpapaloko sa katagang “Keri yan!” ni Imee na hindi naman naranasan ang magsaka at maputikan?

Ito ang taon na dapat wala nang magbubulagbulagan at magbibingibingihan. Tayo ang may kalayaang magluklok ng mga tao sa senado. Huwag na sana tayong paulit-ulit na mag pabilanggo sa mga rehas ng ating desisyon.

Hindi man kasinghigpit ng isang pagandahang patimpalak ang mga kwalipikasyong hinahanap upangmaluklok sa senado, tayo, ang mga botante, ang may kalayaan at karapatang pumili at magdesisyon kung sila nga ba’y karapat-dapat na magsilbi sa Pilipinas at sa buong sambayanang Pilipino.

ears have passed since the University Student Government (USG) was established. They serve as the student’s leaders and voice to the faculties, someone they can share their concerns that needed to be heard by the school admin. It was an up-and-down journey to be where they are now. Each administration has its own promises and was expected to see the improvement on their works. Every term, thoughts turn toward how history is going to record their time in the position, whether or not they will be considered a success or failure, and how things changed for better or worse under their watch.

Some are so used to the disappointments and unfulfilled words. Others just get tired of the officers who at the start of the campaign are so active with their flowery words and set of platforms that they say will help the students on their concerns, but turns out to be just display in the office. The question now will go to, “how’s your platforms so far?” Did you play better the role of your position as the student’s voice? But according to the students I’ve interviewed, not all admins are as disappointing as you think because some work hard on their position and fulfill their duty well as they can. Asking them what batch is the best term you had experience, the USG batch 2017-2018 got the most response.

“It feels flattering to know that there were students who felt satisfied of our service, and we’re truly grateful of that. I think that there was nothing special in our administration. We just stayed true to our platforms during the elections and stayed faithful to our mandate as duly elected officers”,

former USG president Juvin Durante’s reaction about the student’s positive response on their term. Seen through their accomplishments which they made very transparent to the UNC community. According to Durante, their term’s legacy includes the following: USG internal system, the well-established working departments inside the council is one of their legacies which they are truly proud of; Program, a fair share of activities and projects for the students; Advocacy, the USG initiated and participated in various educational campaigns and movements to further raise awareness and utilize efforts to take part on certain issues inside and outside the University.

This year’s term created a loud noise to the student body, especially in the filing of impeachment complaint by Pres. Hidalgo (former vice-president) to former Pres. Dann Sarte.

It was the first time in USG history to have a complaint to a USG official, especially the president.

The issue involves dedication, priorities, and responsibilities, where from the start they promise to work on.

The USG adviser tells his thoughts and side to the impeachment issue and according to him, initially, he did not want to see the president impeached or removed from office because in either case it would create instability and discredit the position of the presidency and the USG.

“

They wanted to find an alternative but they were caught out of time and had to avail of the constitutional option which is his impeachment. “Later on I did advise the current administration to pursue impeachment even if I did not find it pleasant… I had to support that option because in my point view, it was the right thing to do especially for the students.”

There is an overwhelming position but also a responsibility in that. The thought that they have that much influence on another person’s life is somehow a pressure and a responsibility. But even the most down part of the term they need to prove that they can rise up again and fulfill their duties at a limited time.

As an official you want your term to be remembered; to touch people in such a way that they will never forget your platforms and what you did as a student-leader.

However, this will be very difficult; there will always be the need to that little bit of extra effort that can play a big part in leaving an impact on others. Other people will only focus on what will be the mistakes of the officers, rather than the accomplishments.

There are many ways one can go about leading

to touch people in such a way that they will never forget...

and there are some methods that work better than others.

In themidst of expectation and people who look after you, a lot of pressure and in the eyes of students who lost interest, your legacy should not just be your projects or programs; it must also be the students. We all have an opportunity to make a difference. It is up to us to live up to the legacy that was left for us and to leave a legacy that is worthy to the UNC community and of future USG generations. At the end of the day you should assess yourself, asking the question: how do I come across to others as the student-leader?

And, what can I do now to positively impact the people I work with and the people who trusted me? Today, and every day, you create your legacy.

UNC VB Women bows to NCF in 5-set BUCAL champs’ battle

Out to stun the whole University, the Greyhounds Women’s Volleyball Team displayed their determination to thrash the unbeaten NCF Tigers in the Championship Game of 2018 Bicol University and Colleges Athletic League (BUCAL) held last January 26, 2019 at the UNC Sports Palace.

On the first minutes of the game, NCF Tigers immediately fueled two starting points, notwithstanding the Greyhounds attempts to be on track. With the back to back steals of both teams and 4 times scores apiece, UNC eventually held a tight grip with their standing and set a 7 consecutive deficit score, 16-8.

Despite the Tigers attempted steals, Greyhounds propels their score set, 25-14.

In the second set, both of the team’s eagerness were transparent, desperate for another set win. NCF Tigers impelled garnering a 4-point lead, and continued to wrap it up and through towering their lead by 10 points. The Greyhounds’ struggled with their receive and floor defense, giving away the opportunity for Tigers to control the set, 25-16.

GREATER SUCCESS. Though their team fell short in bagging the championship, the UNC Women’s Volleyball team made history as their game became a platform for UNCeans to rekindle school spirit. Students, employees, and even administrative officials roared all throughout the thrilling match.

The third set distinguished the climax of the game as Tigers showered the snatched the first three points, but Greyhounds did not let it all slip and ties up the score at five apiece.

Greyhounds pushed through extending the lead at six points with consecutive service aces, but the Tigers rolled past closing the lead at two points. Intensity and emotion packed the whole area as they come up garnering a six-time tied up score ended up in 29 apiece. Despite the back to back steals of both teams, Greyhounds kicked down Tigers in a thrilling set score, 31-29.

In the fourth set, Greyhounds visibly struggled with their game play once more.

The lead goes on the Tiger’s side quickly ending the match, 25-18.

On the last set, Greyhounds had a hard time in their offense, while the Tigers were converting it into easy points as an advantage.

Though equipped with all the trainings and preparation, UNC Greyhounds were not able to defend the championship title and lost at a close score, 15-12.

This landed the university as 1st runner-up, standing behind the roaring squad of Naga College Foundation.

Mary Ann Naag, Team Captain, stated her dismay and disappointment to the outcome of the game, but clarified that they have done what they’d ought to exhibit. “..kahit ganon [ang nangyari] hindi naman kami nagpabaya sa game na yon at binuhos ang lahat ng makakaya namin. “ Dauntless by ber trust in God, she intends to use the game to amplify their dedication to win the next season. “.. [gagawin naming] inspirasyon ang nangyari during the BUCAL tournament para mas maging desidido pa lalo ang team namin.”

UNC Volleyball Men notches 1st Runner-up in BUCAL

New as a team yet unwavering, UNC Men’s Volleyball team showed toughness as they land as 1st runner-up after BUCAL Volleyball Season 2 championship match last January 26, 2019 at the Sport Palace.

Despite this being their first year as a varsity team, they did not fail UNCeans with their solid spikes and spry digs along with

their valor to compete with the powerhouse team NCF Tigers in the championship rounds.

“Binigay namin ang best namin (and) nag-training kami almost araw-araw”, Mark Paje, Team Captain, uttered in an interview before the game when asked about their preparation to rise up in the competition after the unfortunate loss in Game 1.

On the first time-out of the first set, Men Greyhounds proves their preparedness as they immediately established 7-5 scores, but NCF Tigers are fueled to win and unleashed a streak of services aces, wrapping up the first set with the scores 25-14.

The momentum built by the NCF Tigers continues in the

second set as UNC Greyhounds refuse to easily yield, trying at least minimize the lead. NCF Tigers ultimately controls the set, 25-18.

At the third set, UNC Greyhounds were still determined to get back to the game. They showcased persistent and strong defense to keep pace with the NCF tigers.

However, this wasn’t enough in the face of the dominating TIgers who owned the court and ended up the game in straight sets, 2519.

“For me sport is not about winning but it is about how you give your best in every game”, Paje stated in an online interview.

Although UNC Greyhounds Volleyball Men didn’t make to be the champion they proved their sportsmanship and committedness to flare up sport spirit.

“Victory maybe isn’t for us that time but I do believed that it has a perfect time. We will never ever say never because quitting isn’t part of a Greyhounds’ vocabulary. We will bounce back stronger and bolder for next Bucal Season,” he added.

Habang napako sa 3rd runner-up ang UNC, tagumpay na naagaw ng Tigers ang kampeonato sa pinale ng Bicol Universities Athletic League (BUCAL) Women’s Basketball.

Ika-26 ng Enero, 2019 sa UNC Sports Palace nang sila’y nagpamalas ng umaatikabong bakbakan laban sa ADNU Blue eagles. 35-58.

Nagpakita ang Lady Tigers ng offensive shots at angking kagalingan sa court at nagtala ng mga iskor na 7-15, 22-26, 27-42, 35-58 sa bawat kwarter. “[We are] not that competitive that’s why. So many rookies sa team and some of the players already graduated, kung sa manpower kulang na,” sabi ni Coach Alven Lumberio nang tanungin ukol sa naging resulta ng BUCAL para sa UNC. Dagdag pa ni Lumberio, kinakailangan nilang tutukan ang paghahanap ng karagdagang manlalaro at pagpapaigting pa lalo ang pag-eensayo.

Umuwi bilang 1st unnerup ang Ateneo de Naga University na sinundan ng AMA Computer College bilang 2nd runner-up.

Urgent student concerns that were needed to be addressed. When students were being oppressed by school policies, he did nothing. Not even a single word.”

Why did it take you so long from filing a complaint?

I filed the complaint only this January because we still gave him chance to fulfil his duties and obligations in the USG and when the organization really looked helpless, some of the officers and concerned students pushed me to file the complaint.”

Where should the incoming administration focus on?

“

The incoming administration should focus on establishing a system so that their projects and programs will be good enough.

Without a proper system, there is a high chance of not meeting their goals.”
