Mock Trial team goes from the classroom to the courtroom by ISABELLE UNDERKOFFLER Schools throughout Maryland, including here at Decatur, are preparing for Mock Trial competitions. For those who don’t know, Mock Trial is an extracurricular activity where students compete using a made-up court case to learn about the legal system in a competitive manner. It usually takes place after school. “You get to go to the courthouse and compete against people which is really fun,” said Simran Jain, who is a member of the team and has been on it for three years. They are each given a case book that has characters in the case and are to study and read all of it. Some people are assigned certain characters in the case, called witnesses, and some are their attorneys who are trying to prove they’re in the right. The attorneys also cross-examine one person each from the other side and are trying to prove them wrong. The last two people are alternates;
if someone isn’t there, they fill in and they also keep time. There are two sides, defense and plaintiff. The defense in defending the person being accused of something and the plaintiff is trying to prove that they are wrong. On each side there is an expert witness. The two expert witnesses are there to talk about the case and give their opinion about the case. They are also trying to prove that they are an expert in what they do. The cross examining for the expert witnesses is different though. The cross examiners are trying to prove that the person on the other side isn’t an expert and that their client is an expert. There are two types of cases, criminal and civil. This year, students are doing a civil case. It is about a person by the name of Dakota Reese who has been accused of stealing ladder shoes from their neighbor. Since she stole the ladder shoes, it caused someone to get hurt.

A WHIMSICAL WINTER CONCERT

by EMMALYN FETTERS On December 19 at 7 p.m., friends and family gathered in the Stephen Decatur High School auditorium to bear witness to the Decatur marching band and orchestra concert. The lights began to dim as the ever-approaching sounds of instruments flooded the theatre. The beating of drums, tooting of trumpets, and soothing symphonies of the saxophones marched behind drum major Jonah Ridgely. They entered behind the audience, an exciting detail carefully decided by their erudite teacher, Mr. Foell. The marching band beauti-
fully executed multiple holiday-themed songs, wowing the crowd before them. The orchestra began shortly after, their swing tunes bringing more joy and peace into the nearly full room, helping spread holiday cheer much further than just the four walls of Stephen Decatur High School. The performance then continued outside, the marching band finishing off the night with a warm tone to soften the blow of the bone-chilling winds. So, well done to all that performed that night, as it was a magical event one will not forget.

THE HISTORY OF
VALENTINE’S DAY by NEVAEH HORTON The history of Valentine’s Day is not well known for the majority of people. Usually, on February 14, people celebrate Valentine's Day by sending loving cards, gifts, candy, and showing messages of love to the people you care most about, but the origin of this holiday may leave some questioning thoughts. Valentine's Day comes from a combination of different countries and time periods. It all started from Roman Catholics and a saint named St. Valentine. This is where Valentine’s Day gets its name from. The Catholic Church in the Third
Century had secret weddings for Roman soldiers, including St. Valentine, on February 13-15. This meant they were going against the emperors wishes and labeling him as the love stealer. Years after that, St. Valentine wrote the first love letter to his "valentine" that he met in prison due to the secret weddings. Before his death, he wrote the same young girl a letter that signed "From your Valentine". This is the reason we write this phrase in current Valentine’s Day cards. The reason we celebrate Valentine’s Day today comes from the
start of Victorian men giving women flowers, along with Richard Cadbury creating the first heart- shaped box of chocolates. Conversation hearts and cards in New England became popular by a company named Necco. In the 1920s, English- styled cards also became popularized in stores thanks to the assembly line in America. This then caused Hallmark, an American company, to begin distributing "Valentine's Day Cards". Over the years, Valentine’s Day has grown to be a big money maker and a day to celebrate your love for others.

Test-taking anxiety: how do you handle it? by TAYLOR JACOBS As the end of the semester comes around, testing begins to overtake our minds with anxiety. And test anxiety is a real thing, because according to the National Education Association, 70 percent of teens say anxiety and depression are a “major problem” among their peers. Tests that Decatur students may be taking are MISA for science, HSA for government, as well as Math-MCAP for Algebra 1,2 and geometry. Those are the ones needed for graduation, but PSAT is in 10th grade and the SAT is in 11th grade. Test anxiety “it is a real thing and people tend to choke up on tests,” said Keith Hall, who works here at Decatur in the Guidance office. “And when we test day after day, it tends to
make it worse. If we had mindfulness to fix our problem, we wouldn’t have it as big as it is. If it happens to you, Hall added, “test anxiety is like a snowball rolling down a mountain and we can’t stop it.” When asked what kinds of strategies does he recommend for students who have test anxiety, he replied that “we can try mindfulness exercises to bring us back to the present, or we can try to change our negative thinking into positive thinking.” Hall also said he doesn’t really see a lot of people with test anxiety, but people will go to him to talk to him when the test anxiety in a really bad place for them. “Tests are not fatal,” he added. “It might feel like it is, but it is not.”
To ease test-taking anxiety during Final Exams on Jan. 29-30, the Guidance office brought in several therapy dogs from Pets on Wheels, including Gracey the Labradoodle, pictured here with junior Issy Mitchell. (The Hawk photo)
It’s OK to talk about Mental Health Awareness by AVA ARNOLD
As human beings, everyone struggles with mental health. The level of severity is based on each individual’s history, something that one individual might struggle with and, someone might not feel the same way. Mental health can SDHS Social Worker Wendy Shirk (submitted photo)
affect anybody of any age, according to Wendy Shirk, our school social worker here at Decatur. She said, usually, when someone is struggling with mental health, they just need to be heard outside of themselves and need someone to talk to. Shirk advises that
you find someone you can trust to talk to, like a friend, parent, family member, or teacher. If they can’t help you, go to a professional. Both a counselor and therapist are available at school. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health don’t be afraid to reach out for help.

The Stephen Decatur Swim team has been a group of some of the kindest and hard-working kids in the school. Ever since 2007, when the team was founded, they support each other and have truly formed their own community. The team’s performance and dedication reflect the leadership of the head coach of the team, Kristina Watts. Each week, swimmers spend around an hour after school at

The effort has paid off considering last season, when they took second place at regionals. Because of this they were able to move on to the state championships. It was by far one of the most outstanding meets of the season. Along with this, three swimmers won regional titles
in their respective events. “You are competing against yourself to get your best times,” said Kate Slaysman, “but the swim team is truly the most sportsmanlike and supportive of each other.” The 2023-24 Swim Team is a admirable group of athletes who support and care for each other. Through hours practicing, and time spent at meets, they’ve really improved and grown into their own group.

Movie review: “Anyone But You” by MADDIE BELL
Do you like cheesy romance movies? Where you can predict the ending? Did you know, roughly seven in 10 people say they enjoy rom coms? If these all describe you, you need to run and not walk to see this movie. Everyone has been RAVING about it. It’s called “Anyone but You.” I personally went and saw this movie with my boyfriend, and we absolutely loved it! This movie falls in the romance/comedy genre. This film is rated R. Some lead actors include Sydney Sweeney (Bea), and Glen Powell (Ben). The basic information you need to know: this movie is about two young adults navigating their way through a situation-ship with a rocky start. Okay, so basically the plot is pretty crazy. Bea (Sydney Sweeney) and Ben (Glen Powell) meet at a coffee shop in New York City. They then get to know each other and spend the rest of the day and night together. The next morning, Bea leaves without saying goodbye or getting his number. They later realize that Beas sister and one of Bens best friends are getting married.
Considering that, the two are forced to spend time together during their wedding week in Australia. They pretend they are together because both of their exes also attend the wedding, and they want to make them jealous. Most of the movie was them faking the PERFECT rela-
tionship. They actually got away with it too. Throughout that time, they actually fall in love and end up being together at the end of the movie. Something that really interested me about this movie was that the plot kept getting interesting as time went on. I was like, “What’s going
to happen next?” I literally didn’t predict anything except that they would obviously get together at the end. The soundtrack was so good too. I felt like it really fit the moments they decided to add the music in. There was one really popular song used in this movie, by Natasha Bedingfield. It is called “Unwritten.” I actually love that song now. I thought that Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell played such good roles in this movie, too. I really enjoyed watching them and it was honestly pretty funny, I caught myself laughing out loud once or maybe even twice. I recommend this movie SO MUCH! Especially to people like me who love romantic comedies. It was such an amazing movie, and I don’t think I’m the only one who thinks that. The actors did such an amazing job at portraying their characters. The plot was also kept interesting throughout the movie, not to mention it wasn’t dragged on and the actual film wasn’t even that long. To wrap up, I highly recommended this movie. It was so cute and adorable, and I really enjoyed seeing it. I would totally go back and see it again! Rated R. Directed by Will Gluck. Running time 1 hr 45 min. Released by Columbia Pictures.

No joy from Jo Koy at 2024 Golden Globe awards by JILLIAN DONAHUE
Are you interested in filmmaking and everything Hollywood? Then you’d love the Golden Globes Awards. This award ceremony focuses on actors’ achievements and the accomplishments of the films themselves. At the 2024 Golden Globe Awards, many prominent celebrities attended. These included the casts for the movies “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie,” Taylor Swift, Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothée Chalamet, and many others. On the red carpet, fans rushed to critique and admire their favorite stars’ outfits on social media. The host of this year’s Golden Globes was stand-up comedian and actor, Jo Koy. There are 27 categories that are voted on. Some major wins from the night were “Barbie” winning Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, “What Was I Made For?” winning Best Original Song in a Motion Picture, “Oppenheimer” winning Best Motion Picture for a Drama, and Christopher Nolan winning Best Motion Picture Drama for “Oppenheimer.”
The host, Jo Koy, got some backlash on social media from “jokes” he made about Barbie and Taylor Swift. These included inappropriate comments and rude remarks. He
think giving Jo Koy more time to prepare for the ceremony by reading over the comments and getting others’ opinions beforehand could be beneficial and go over better with fans.
tried to defend himself during the show by saying he only had ten days to prepare and that the writers came up with the jokes. Some people took it upon themselves to rewrite the jokes and make them not so demeaning to prove he didn’t have to say the things he did. I
Sometimes at award shows you don’t know who anyone is or any of the films. The Golden Globes recognized very popular movies that deserved recognition and actors who played their roles phenomenally. The red-carpet fashion was amazing. I particularly loved Taylor
Swift’s green dress from Gucci. “Barbie” star Margot Robbie’s outfit really embodied her movie very well. One of my favorite things is when actors match their outfits to their films. She had on a pink sequin dress from Armani with a pink tulle boa Some of the fashion however was not my favorite. “The Last of Us” actor Bella Ramsey’s outfit was not something I liked. To me, it was boring and wasn’t the best match for a red-carpet event. The first Golden Globes happened in 1944. It was the first award presentation for esteemed achievements in the film industry. Today, the ceremony is held every January and is a major event in the film industry. This year’s was on January 7. Overall, the 2024 Golden Globe Awards went well. There were some controversies with the host, but all the attendees were drama-free. It is so important to recognize amazing talent and that is what the Golden Globes did. The fashion was stunning, and I was happy with the winners of each category. I will definitely be tuning in next year to see who is there and what films win!

Could a four-day school week work at Decatur? by KEVIN MORALES-GONZALEZ
Do you like three-day weekends? Well, why not have a four-day school week? States all around the United States have already moved to four-day school week, so why not make a change here? But hey, you don’t have to take my word for it. Just look at what the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) said about four-day school weeks: “Research shows that the maximum possible cost savings for districts on a four-day week is 5.43%, but average savings range from 0.4% to 2.5%”. Not only do four-day school weeks save the amount of budget that schools have, but could also help solve teacher shortages. Lately there have been an increase in teacher shortages all around the United States. All 50 states have reported teacher shortages in more than one area for the 2022–2023 school year. According to the NCSL, four-day school weeks also improve student attendance and increase teachers’ and students’ morale which can lead to improvement in academic performance. In addition to three-day weekends helping students
and teachers, it can also help budget for the whole school year. By reducing the number of school days, schools can save money on energy, food, and transportation costs. Of course, we have to consider the dozens of days students will miss throughout the whole school year. What many schools are doing is starting schools earlier and ending the day a little later, releasing kids between 4-5 PM. This will not affect how many days are in summer break, however, and will make attendance for all students more strict.
Though this may seem surprising, teachers and students are not the only ones who are enjoying three-day weekends. According to EdChoice, roughly 60 percent of parents signaled they would support their child’s school moving towards a four-day school week with only 27 percent of parents opposing the idea. In conclusion, I think that Stephen Decatur High school should switch to four-day school weeks. It wouldn’t just improve student and teacher morale, but also would help with the budget.
We would be spending less on necessities such as transportation, food, etc., and more on resources and possibly increase teacher salary. Sure, the schedule would be different and many students and teachers would most likely disagree to the changes, but I think it’s definitely worth the three-day weekend.
Kevin Morales-Gonzalez is an SDHS freshman.
