Painful Process of Growth DEBESMSCAT has underwent a lot of changes over the past 20 years. How have these changes addressed the challenges of the college? Is it enough? Has the college improved enough to successfully host the SCUAA Meet 2018?

ne of the measures of how efficient the college or university operates is its ability to accommodate guests and host events—even one as big as the Regional SCUAA Meet. This year, DEBESMSCAT hosted the Regional SCUAA Meet and was tested to its limits. This is the third time DEBESMSCAT has hosted such an

event. The first one was on 2000 followed by another on 2008. On average, there is a 9-year gap between the hosting experiences of the college. A span as long as this allows many changes in any institution. More notably, DEBESMSCAT has undergone a major transformation in terms of its infrastructural development from 2008 to 2010. Thus, those who’s been in the college in 2008 can attest to the difference in hosting capabilities of the college.

the college. A viable and sustainable water source is difficult to come by. One needs to buy drinking water because of the absence of the potable water source. Colleges collect rainwater for other water needs. From November to early December 2018, though, the rain was not sufficient to produce enough water supply even for DEBESMSCAT’s use. For the use of an additional 2000 people (delegates from the 9 SUCs in the region), this supply falls way short of the demand.

Challenges

Another challenge is the billeting. SCUAA Meet was scheduled when the college is having some of its academic buildings renovated. In addition, the lack of a sufficient number of restrooms for each college was felt more significantly.

The multitude of improvements in the college makes it intuitive to assert that the it has become better at hosting the SCUAA meet since its previous experiences on 2000 and 2008. However, one thing remains true: some difficulties the college has had remain existent up until now and were not addressed fully with or without a preparatory need for hosting an event. Because of its location, water has always been a problem in

Hosting a big event like Regional SCUAA is not an easy task. It denotes responsibility anchored with various preparations. It needs ample time to assure that the venue will project a conducive environment. That is because this kind of activity is not just about playing but refining athletes and players to become champions with dedication to strive for excellence, as well. With an open arms, Dr. Emilio B. Espinosa, Sr. Memorial State College of Agriculture and Technology grabbed the opportunity to be the host of this year’s Regional SCUAA on December 9-14, 2018. Empowered with the theme: “Positioning Higher Education for Strategic Global Transformation Through Sports Development.” It was participated in by nine SUCs including DEBESMSCAT namely: Bicol University, Bicol State College of

Applied Sciences and Technology, Central Bicol State University of Agriculture, Camarines Sur Polytechnic College, Camarines Norte State College, Catanduanes State Utniversity, Partido State University and Sorsogon State College. In this regard, embracing and accepting the said activity bring forth pride and honor to our dear Alma Mater for it partly implies that our institution is continuously growing and improving, thus it can hold events like this. On the other hand, we cannot deny the fact that DEBESMSCAT also have flaws particularly with regard to water ystem. Thus, we would like to extend our apologies on that matter. The Administration also tried to deal with that problem, initiated alternatives and took collective action to cope up to the needs. I wish you enjoyed your stay in DEBESMSCAT. COLLEGE ENTERS A NEW MILESTONE IN ITS HISTORY

DEBESMSCAT HOLDS SCUAA MEET ROGIE A. SALDIVAR

ith the theme “Positioning Higher Education for Strategic Global Transformation Through Sports Development,” DEBESMSCAT hosted the SCUAA Meet 2018 on December 9-14, 2018. Nearly 2000 delegates from the different state colleges and universities within the Bicol Region came together to showcase and celebrate their talents, skills and abilities in the different fields of sports.

DEBESMSCAT family, headed by the SUC President Dr. Erwin H. Malto, formally welcomed the SCUAA participants on December 9, 2018 with a parade, a field demo and a Barn Dance presentation. Varying colors, each representing a college or university, enlivened the parade which was closely followed by the field demonstration of the DEBESMSCAT freshmen students and Barn dance by selected faculty of the college. Barn dance is one of the cultural dances of Masbate, which reflects the province’s cattle industry.

Dance sports competition, which is one of the highlights of the event, was held in the evening of December 9, 2018, at the DEBESMSCAT Covered Court. The competition was divided into two categories: the Latin and Standard. The uproar from an excited crowd filled the air when the winners of the competition were announced. For the Standard Category, Couple 005 (Partido State University) was announced as the Champion followed by Couple 003 (Bicol University) as the First Runner Up and Couple 001 () as the 2nd Runner Up. For the Latin Category, Couple 007 (DEBESMSCAT) was announced as the winner, followed by Couple 009 (Sorsogon State College) as 1st Runner-Up and Couple 008 (Camarines Sur Polytechnic College) as 2nd Runner-up. The first day of the SCUAA meet 2018 was ended colorfully with a fireworks display at the DEBESMSCAT Quadrangle.

Painful process of growth... (from page 1) This time, the college was successful in hosting sports competition through its spacious and developed athletic grounds. Most of the events in the evening were conducted in its covered court next to the grounds. EcoPark, banking on ecotourism potentials of the college and the municipality, not only showcased the beauty of the environment of the college but introduced Bat-ongan cave from afar, as well. To deal with the challenges, particularly that of the water, the college benefited well with its strong ties with the

LGU. The Bureau of Fire, with and through the support of the LGU, regularly delivered water to the billeting areas for use. Barangay Cabitan extended its help, as well, by lending their police to augment the security within the campus. The process of transformation, especially one that pushes an entity or an institution to the borders of excellence, is an arduous and lengthy one. DEBESMSCAT is under such a process. The metamorphosis will eventually result in the start of a new age for the college, a new experience for its clientele—a source of a renewed pride for Masbateños.

“It is a great place and the area’s expansion is wide with accommodating and friendly people. One of the most notable experiences I had was needing to poop but found out that there’s no water in the toilet. Such a problem made our stay here challenging. I have nothing to suggest—only, have some decent source of water. That’s one of the challenges we had here.”
