Tell us about Team Kaylie! What is it about the show that made you want to be involved? Team Kaylie is about a Hollywood socialite [Kaylie Konrad] who is sentenced to a year of community service leading the Wilderness Club at an innercity middle school. Kaylie has to overcome her fear as she attempts to prove herself, since she knows nothing about the outdoors or kids! From the moment I got the audition and read the breakdown for Jackie Murphy, I knew I wanted to play this character. I immediately connected with Jackie and I knew from then on that she would become a huge part of my life. How would you describe your character, Jackie? Jackie Murphy is a member of the Wilderness Club at Pico Middle School. She is a perfectionist, rule-follower, goody-two-shoes, and a straight-A student. Even though Jackie seems “perfect” on the outside, she actually does struggle with some insecurities. But, with the support of her friends in the Wilderness Club and Kaylie Konrad, her confidence grows throughout the season. For those who haven’t streamed the show yet, how would you describe the series and what they can expect? Team Kaylie is a live action family-friendly comedy with jokes and humor that reaches all ages. The theme of our show deals with finding and embracing yourself because each of the characters grow and work together as the season progresses. Team Kaylie is also deeply rooted in physical comedy, has a diverse cast, and entertaining storylines. I hope that people binge our show together as a family and have as much fun watching it as I did when filming! What has the reaction been like from fans so far?

I am so happy that I can now share with the world what an amazing project I have been working on this year. The reactions from viewers are so positive and supportive, and I have been continually told how much fans are loving our show! I am extremely grateful for all the fans who are watching, and it makes me smile when people come up to me and say how much they love Team Kaylie. If the show gets a second season, what are some storylines you’d like to see happen? We’ve all been really dedicated to making a great show and first season. If Team Kaylie gets a second season, I’d like to explore Jackie’s family life and her back story. Jackie is so focused on doing well in school and started studying for the SAT at a young age – LOL. Maybe season two would show us more about Jackie’s childhood. Also, I have been learning aerial silks for the past year now, and it would super fun to see Jackie let loose and perform some cool tricks for her friends. When you’re not busy on set what are you usually up to? I am now a freshman in high school, so when I’m not on set, and I’m usually studying and doing schoolwork. I also love to do aerial silks, bike ride, read, and hang out with my friends. Any special news for fans/viewers of the show about upcoming episodes? Yes! We filmed 20 episodes in season one. So Part 2 will be released on December 2nd, which also features a special holiday episode. In one of the episodes, Jackie, Chewy, and Kaylie work together as elves for the holidays; it’s hilarious. Everyone should spread kindness and holiday cheer, and also curl up on the couch with family and friends, drink some hot cocoa and watch Team Kaylie! THE DAILY SHUFFLE

Starring on The CW’s Batwoman, Brendon Zub has proven himself a force to be reckoned with. We talked to the rising actor about his time on set, his TV obsessions, and more! words by VANESSA SALLES photo by PATRICK TRACY

Let’s talk Batwoman! What can you tell us about your character, Chuck Dodgson, and what viewers can expect from him this season? Dodgson is first seen as a high-ranking member of the Crows security force in Gotham, working closely with Kate Kane’s father, Jacob Kane, and Kate’s ex, Sophie Moore. However, in a surprising twist, he’s revealed to be a traitor to the Crows and Alice’s secret lover and member of the wonderland gang. Viewers are just beginning to see hints of Alice’s and Dodgson’s plans for Gotham. However, more of their relationship, backstory, and true motivations will be revealed later on in the season. Any memorable behind-the-scenes moments from filming that you can share with us? I have a very funny yet painful memory shooting the Batwoman interrogation scene of Dodgson, at the end of episode 2. A week before filming, I was unlucky enough to pop my rib out while training Jiujitsu. It took forever to heal and I was surprised to learn there’s no real comfortable resting body position with an injury like that. It hurts when you breathe, laugh and hang from shackles in the Batcave too. So when Batwoman confronted Dodgson that day in the dungeons, there was no acting required of me...all the pain and grimacing on my face in that scene is real! How would you describe the vibe on the Batwoman set? I’d say it’s a close family vibe. In fact, we even refer to each other as the Batfam in our group texts. We have grown pretty close to each other while in Vancouver. Now, that’s to be expected for a cast in a new city and working long hours together making a new show...but we actually hang out a lot offset. There’s been many cast dinners, BBQs, concerts and even a whale watching tour we all went on this summer.

What’s it been like to work with Ruby Rose? It’s been great! When we first started shooting, I wasn’t sure what to expect and didn’t know much about her, having only seen her in John Wick 2 playing a badass assassin. That side of her definitely comes out when she dons the bat suit, but behind the mask lies a true heart of gold and generous spirit. We’ve all been fortunate enough to be on the receiving end of her thoughtfulness. That kind of compassion can easily be missed when you’re tired and working long hours on set but that’s not the case with her. What are you loving on TV? What do you want to see more of? I have a thing for good action and period pieces. I’m a big GOT fan (read all the books) and am still working my way through Downton Abbey, Peaky Blinders, Vikings, and Outlander! When you think of your ultimate dream role what comes to mind? Braveheart, Gladiator, Forest Gump and Band of Brothers come to mind. All great shows with iconic characters that you’ll never forget. I’d love the opportunity to play such a profound character like that. Maybe one of those roles will be remade for a new generation but I think there are so many other stories out there with great roles still waiting to be written. When you’re not busy on set what are you usually up to? I stay quite active when offset. I loved sports growing up so it’s my favorite way to stay in shape and take my mind off things. Living in Vancouver BC over the years has spoiled me; there’s so much to do here. If I’m not at the gym, I’m either training Brazilian Jiujitsu, playing hockey, skiing or Scuba diving off the BC coast!

A true scene-stealer on Netflix’s new series Daybreak, Alyvia Alyn Lind is definitely one to watch. We talked to the young actress about behind-the-scenes moments, dream roles and more. words by VANESSA SALLES

Let’s talk Daybreak! What is it about the show that made you want to be involved? As soon as I read the script for Daybreak, I knew I wanted to play Angelica. I had never come across a role like her and I was so excited to figure her out. She reminded me of Chloe Grace Moretz in Kickass, which was probably the best character ever written for a girl. I think Angelica and Hit Girl would be great friends. What can you tell us about your character, Angelica Green? Angelica is a rebellious 10-year-old pyromaniac with a tough exterior and an emotional center. She is making her way through the Apocalypse and trying to forge her own tribe. What’s been your favorite part about bringing the character to life? Well, my favorite part might be Angelica’s Doc Marten wheelies. It’s a kid’s dream to roll around on set every day. But Angelica could not be more fun to play, from her weapons and slime, to her crazy wardrobe and pink hair. I just love her. Any memorable behind the scenes moments while filming that you can share with us? When we had breaks, we danced and danced and danced. Austin taught all of us the newest moves, and the funniest thing that I will NEVER forget - we taught Matthew Broderick how to floss. We have videos! It was the best. What are you most excited for fans to see? Daybreak is like a roller coaster. There are so many ups and downs and twists and turns, and even when you think you’ve figured it out, it changes and surprises you. I’m just excited for fans to take that ride. How well do you think you would survive in a

post-apocalyptic world? Before filming this show, I don’t think I would have had a clue. But Angelica has taught me so much. With my flame thrower, which I now know how to use, and my wheelies, and the right tribe, I know I could survive. When you think of your ultimate dream role, what comes to mind? My favorite female role was Harley Quinn. She’s so beautiful, but quirky and crazy and such a badass. I think my dream role would be flashback Harley Quinn. And maybe eventually, adult Harley Quinn in a Suicide Squad sequel. What are you loving on TV? What do you want to see more of? I’m a Netflix junkie. I loved End of the F’ing World because the actors were so real and the story kept me binging all the episodes back to back. I’m also a big fan of Santa Clarita Diet because Drew Barrymore will always be my favorite. I’m also hoping that Netflix brings my mom’s show, One Tree Hill, back so I can finish it! When you’re not busy on set, what are you usually up to? I’m really close with my family and we all work in this business, so we don’t get to all be in the same place at the same time very often. So when we are, we celebrate by having parties, cooking together, going to escape rooms, etc. When we’re not together, I’m usually traveling to visit them on location. Any special message to fans? A fan-favorite both on and off screen, Bryana Salaz has cemented herself as a star on the rise. Currently starring on Netflix’s hit comedy Team Kaylie, the 22-year-old entertainer shines as the series’ leading lady. “What initially drew me to the show was the inviting, warm energy that I felt when reading the script,” the actress says. “Our show offers so many different messages to so many different types of people and I think everyone can find a way to relate to someone or something on the show. Being a part of a kids show that’s talking about issues that aren’t normally discussed means the world to me; the representation and diversity that our show brings is so special.”

With the first five episodes already available to stream, Team Kaylie’s hilarious and heartfelt moments have quickly made the series a total must-watch. For those who haven’t had a chance to stream it yet, expect plenty of sass and even more life revelations. “The show follows Kaylie, a self-obsessed, famous reality TV star, who gets into an accident and has to do one year of community service,” Bryana explains. “Her community service requires her to lead an after-school program for a group of kids in East LA. Overall, the show follows this oblivious, sheltered and rich celebrity and her journey to learning that there’s more to life than cameras and money. You can expect lots of heartfelt moments, real moments, and a whole lot of laughs.” Being the complete opposite of her onscreen persona, the actress revealed the importance of bringing bits of her own personality into the role. “Becoming Kaylie was such a fun process,” she gushes. “Aside from the hair, makeup and wardrobe, transforming into Kaylie everyday was such an experience. I really had to step outside of my own world and put myself in her shoes. It was really important for me to find the authenticity and likeability in Kaylie; it’s easy for her to be misunderstood or

perceived in a different way. Bringing elements of who I am and how I grew up was very crucial to bringing Kaylie to life.” Though it’s impossible to envision anyone else as the star of the show, Bryana admits that she almost missed the opportunity. “Crazily enough, I almost didn’t make it to audition,” she laughs. “I had just been dumped by someone I was seeing and was exhausted from filming another project. I just wasn’t in the headspace to audition and so I was going to skip it. Luckily, my team encouraged me to read the script and go in. As soon as I read the first scene, there was just something that clicked. I had completely forgotten about everything else and felt that I was meant to be in that room. Turns out I was the first person to audition for the entire show which is super cool to me that I ended up being the lucky Kaylie Konrad!” Recalling her time on set, the starlet shares that it was nothing but good times. “Our set was just the absolute best,” she gushes. “There was so much love and such a warm and positive energy. We really became a family and made sure that we made anyone guest-starring or visiting feel like they were apart of it too.” The

cast and crew aren’t the only ones who felt the love; fans of the show have resonated with the characters in an undeniable way. “The reaction from the audience has been so unreal,” Bryana says. “Everyone is messaging me about how much they love it; it reaches kids and adults and it really puts the biggest smile on my face that there’s something for everyone.” As for dream storylines, Bryana hopes to delve more into Kaylie’s character development. “If we’re lucky enough to get a second season, I would just love to continue to see Kaylie come into her own,” she notes. “This whole season is about her trying to figure it all out but I’d love to see her truly become who she wants to be. She’s learned many lessons throughout this first season so it’d be nice to see her apply it in her life and also help the kids as they enter a new chapter of their lives.” When the actress isn’t busy on set, Bryana spends her time making music. “My ultimate dream role would be one that lets me combine both singing and acting,” she says. “I always say any role on Glee would be my thing: singing, acting, dancing, comedy, drama – all of it! My love for music was always there; it just took me a while to realize that my love for music could actually be the beginning of my career.”

Describing her musical sound, Salaz reveals she has many inspirations. “My biggest influences are Whitney Houston, Selena, & Ariana Grande,” she notes. “I pull from all three whenever I’m performing. I don’t really have my own sound yet and that’s okay with me. I am in no rush to put anything that isn’t 100% me out. It’ll fall into place when it’s meant to.” Though she keeps a busy schedule, Bryana makes sure to prioritize her mental health. “I always set aside some ‘me’ time when I’m feeling overwhelmed,” she shares. “Mental health is extremely important and people and need to understand that it’s okay to not have it all together. It’s okay if you failed that exam and it’s okay if you’re having a breakdown in the middle of your shift – you just need to take a step back and breathe. For me, I will tell everyone that I’m usually in contact with and let them know that I’m taking the day for myself. Then, I just relax by my pool, stay in bed, or do my skincare routine. I just do whatever eases my mind and body so that I’m able to recharge and can do and be better.” As for what’s up next, Bryana’s focusing on staying present and enjoying the now. “I am so genuinely happy and content with life right now that I can’t think of anything I would want to do to make it better,” she says.

GONE WEST

Comprised of Colbie Caillat, Justin Kawika Young, Jason Reeves and Nelly Joy, Gone West is about to top all your favorite playlists. We talked to the country band to get the inside scoop on their creative process, first single and more. words by VANESSA SALLES photo by PATRICK TRACY

Take us back to the beginning! What can you tell us about the moment when Gone West became more than just an idea? The spark came when we all did the Malibu Sessions tour together. We performed that Colbie album from start to finish each night, singing harmonies and playing together. Once we got back to Nashville, Nelly was the one that said we should write a song as a band, just for fun. We did our first writing session with Jimmy Robbins, loved the song and decided to put another session on the books. The next session was with Tom Douglas, someone we all have so much respect and admiration for, as a writer and a person. He gave us an inspiring talk about why we NEEDED to follow this path and make music together. That was the moment that solidified Gone West. How would you describe your creative process? It’s a true collaboration between the four of us, writing and producing. We usually have a fifth writer in the room with us and as writer/ producer Jamie Kinney explains it, we have a high pain threshold. We spend a lot of time making sure everyone is satisfied with each lyric and each melody. Sometimes that means re-working sections of songs for weeks. We also feel like, for us, it’s important that we connect personally to all the songs we write and not just write a clever concept or wordplay that isn’t grounded in truth. Tell us about “What Could’ve Been” – what inspired the track? How did you know it was the right song to serve as Gone West’s debut?

We wrote it with Jamie Kinney and he came in with the idea for the chorus. The story goes that he listened to our EP in the shower that morning and immediately sat down at the piano and it’s the first things that came to him. We loved the idea right away and it just flowed. By the end of the night, we had it written and mostly recorded. It did feel like there was some magic in the room on that one. It was written late in the album process so we had initially planned on another song as single 1, but as we played it out, the reaction was undeniable. Working as a group, is it ever difficult to make sure you’re all on the same page? It’s definitely not always easy to get four people to agree on everything. Creatively, the differences can be useful in bringing out the best in each of us and it can help to make the music unique. We all have different musical tastes and influences we bring to the table. But like any relationship, it takes communication and compromise. Any special message for fans? We’re so grateful for everyone who has listened to our music and come to our shows! It’s been a wild year of launching this band but we’ve been so encouraged by all the love we’ve received from so many people. We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without fans and we really don’t take that for granted. There’s a special relationship between music makers and listeners and we can feel that very strongly when we play live and read comments online. We’re so stoked for the future!

Tell us about your single, “Can’t Trust Nobody” – what’s the story behind the track? The track is about the music industry. People often want you to go a direction they want, creatively or situationally, and they manipulate. But the hardest part is to trust yourself through it all and to keep pushing through the bullshit of the industry. Any memorable moments while writing/ recording it? I remember writing at 4 am in my bedroom, in a really bad state. I was feeling like I couldn’t trust anyone I was working with. I started producing it, wanting it to be the darkest track, so it could fit the mood. Deep bass, heavy beat. I took it to the studio with Jamie Kenney and he blew it up right. What has the reaction been from fans so far? They’ve loved it. A lot of people have really related to it too so that’s good… shitty given the nature, but also glad it can reach them at that place. What inspired the concept for the music video? I wanted to capture the emotion, in the colors specifically. I always saw dark red/blue with it. Also, I wanted to capture the feeling of being alone, and not really in a good way. What can you tell us about your upcoming debut EP? How would you describe the vibe? It really was a stamp of my life with everything I was going through. A breakup, moving

on, falling in love again, trusting and questioning. It’s a lot of ups and downs, going through shit. A lot of it is upbeat, but also moody at times. Is there a track that holds the most significance to you? “Stuck”. It was the first song I wrote after the breakup that caused me to go solo. It’s about peeling off the Band-Aid of someone you’ve grown so close with, and been glued to. I had never felt lower when I was writing it, and it hits me deep. Who are some of your musical influences? I grew up listening to stuff all over the maps, and went through lots of phases from indie rock, surf rock, R&B, electro pop, hip hop. Honestly, good music isn’t defined by genre so I’ve never been limited in what I like. If its creative and well written, I’m inspired by it. What’s on your bucket list for the rest of the year? I can’t wait to get on tour, but ultimately I want people to really feel like they know and get me and my music first. I have so much music I can’t wait to set that foundation with, so getting as much as possible out is number one on my bucket list. Any special message to fans? I’m insanely grateful for your guys’ support, and for everyone who has stuck through and grown with my artistry and its evolution. I will never stop giving you guys all I have!

Starring on The CW’s Nancy Drew, Alvina August shines as Detective Karen Hart. We talked to the actress about her time on set, what’s to come and more. words by VANESSA SALLES photo by DAVID HIGGS

Tell us about Nancy Drew! What is it about the series that made you want to be involved? You mean aside from the fact that I read all the Nancy Drew Mystery Stories books growing up?! Nancy Drew has evolved so much since the 30s; our heroine becomes reimagined to fit every era and to reflect cultural shifts. What I loved about this version is that it still depicts Nancy as courageous; unafraid to speak up and unafraid to challenge authority, very much like teenage environmental activist, Greta Thunberg. In addition, I very much appreciate that the fictitious small town of Horseshoe Bay is way more ethnically diverse than that of the previous River Heights. George is Asian; Ned is black and I’m here for it! How would you describe Detective Karen Hart? What should viewers expect from her with the rest of the season? She is a police detective in Horseshoe Bay. She is ambitious, capable, always seeking truth and justice. She took an oath to abide by the law but she is also very much aware that the law doesn’t always mean justice. As a result, she would do whatever is necessary to protect the ones she loves, in particular Nancy. She straddles the line that separates the professional and personal at times and to me, that is so much fun to explore as an actor. Expect to learn more about her past as the show progresses, like why she became a detective in the first place! Any memorable behind-the-scenes moments from filming that you can share with us? Kennedy [McMann] and I were shooting a scene outside when the biggest mosquito I’ve ever seen just zeroed in on her face and perched right on her forehead! I didn’t know whether to stay in character and try to swat it away without ruining her shot or just stand there and hope it flies along its merry way. Well, it didn’t! The shot ended with Kennedy breaking character, frantically swatting her face yelling, “It’s biting me!” Needless to say, I’ve never

laughed so hard at a cemetery. What has the fan reaction been like to the show so far? Fans have really taken to the show. I’ve received messages from people on social media constantly relaying to me their theories about who killed Tiffany Hudson, which is amazing because I feel like Detective Hart is never fully off the clock. My IG messages have become a tip-line for people who are just as much invested in solving the mystery! When you think of your ultimate dream role, what comes to mind? My ultimate dream role would involve me singing, especially in my native language of Shona. Growing up in Zimbabwe, music was always around me. Before acting, it was the way I expressed myself and shared my story. If my two passions got to exist fully within the same space, I’d be thrilled! What are you loving on TV? I’m currently loving the animated comedy-drama series Undone on Amazon. It bends the rules of space and time, which makes for a refreshing new way to tell stories. I’m also watching Mr. Robot, which is confusingly thrilling. With a plethora of streaming platforms, it seems there is something out there for everyone. We’re seeing more stories told that showcase not just the beautiful, colorful landscape we inhabit but a world that we can imagine and create for ourselves. I’m so proud to be a part of that landscape of story-telling today! Any special message to fans/viewers? I am still overwhelmed with how much love I get from you. I try to respond to all the messages. I truly am blessed to love what I do but especially to then have people love it too. So thank you for all the support. Though it’s likely you’re already familiar with her being on your TV screen, it’s time you get familiar with her singing your favorite songs. Tell us about your new single, “Sweet”! What’s the story behind the track? So, I had just gotten out of a long-term relationship, and I was single for the first time in years. I met a guy through mutual friends who was interested in taking me out, and all of my friends kept saying he was the “sweetest guy ever.” This was shockingly a huge turn off to me-- I didn’t want “sweet” right then because I definitely was not “sweet”. I wasn’t ready to jump into something new and I felt guilty for leading him on. I was in a sort of selfish phase of my life and I was trying to heal, and I couldn’t be who this guy wanted me to be. Any memorable moments while writing/ recording it? I wrote this song the night before our first official date. I was so worried about how this guy was clearly falling for me. I knew I was completely emotionally unavailable… But I still wanted to go on the date and have fun, regardless. The day of, I got a text from the guy that SHOCKED me. He was canceling the date because he too was just out of a long-term relationship and wasn’t ready to start something new… all of my worrying and obsessing over hurting this guy turned out to be for nothing! What’s the reaction been like from fans so far? I’ve been so grateful for the reaction from everyone! I think a lot of women can relate to the idea of not being prim and proper. We’re sick of that. So I’ve loved hearing from different people how relatable the track is. And apparently, it’s an earworm and has gotten stuck in people’s heads so I love that too!

What inspired the concept for the music video? The team from Birdhands Productions and I wanted to play with visuals. I miss the visuals from the 90s, so, conceptually, we went for a kind of throwback, color-blocking theme. These helped illuminate the lyrics, and kind of re-enforced an idea that I’m not “one thing.” During the bridge, we introduced the color red into the palette, and wanted things to get a little more wild as the vocals became more unhinged. I also didn’t want to do something that screamed “FEMINISM” in your face. I wanted something more subtle. Just kind of getting messier and messier and implying a feeling of autonomy and boundlessness. How would you describe your personal sound? I like to live in the alternative indie-pop world. I definitely get vocal inspirations from artists like Alanis Morisette and early Katy Perry and then add a kind of modern flare. Is music your priority at the moment or are there acting projects in the works? I’m doing it all! I recently went to Vancouver and filmed a role on the SciFi show, The Magicians, that will be airing early 2020. And I have a couple other things in the works regarding acting. I’ll be spending the rest of the year touring the US with Postmodern Jukebox, and I couldn’t be more excited. What’s the best way for fans to get your attention on social media?
