Exploring themes like authenticity, frustration, passion, and more, singersongwriter Chlo draws from her life experiences to create repeat-worthy art. We talked to the songstress about the making of her upcoming EP, Fool’s Gold, and more. Tell us about your upcoming EP! How would you describe the vibe/sound? My upcoming EP is a mixture of tracks that I worked very hard on and fully believe in as an artist. In my opinion, I would say that the vibe of Fool’s Gold is closer to a playlist, rather than an album- by that, I mean that an album typically has lots of songs that have similar sounds, while a playlist is made up of tons of different sounding songs that are all tied together by a common thread. I’m really proud of myself for being able to create an EP that reveals all of my different sides as an artist; every song is completely different and I’m so excited for people to hear it. Any memorable moments while writing/ recording? I think the most memorable moments were just being at Donut’s (one of the major producers on the project) studio for a straight month and consistently making music, whether it was good or bad. We pushed so hard to stay focused on creating art that we were both proud of. Donut would always have to take breaks and jump rope to clear his head when we were stuck and I would eat chipotle until the perfect lyrics hit me. Is there a track that holds the most significance to you? All of the tracks are personal but “LBW” holds a special place in my heart because it

was definitely the most vulnerable session between Donut, Micah Jasper (guitarist on the song) and myself. It was about a very difficult breakup and I relied on music to help me process. It was by far the hardest to record. Can fans be expecting any live performances this summer? Definitely! I’m really excited to be performing in the L.A. area this summer.. I’m also looking ahead for some performance opportunities in the fall. When it comes to stage presence, which artist(s) are you inspired by? Some performers who inspire me are Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake and Whitney Houston. I love artists who create a show out of their music, and allow their vision to come to life onstage. That’s my dream and always has been. What are you loving in music right now? I love that R&B is taking over the game! I have such a soft spot for an R&B influence. When you think of ultimate career goals, what comes to mind? Doing something that’s never been done before. I would love to go on a world tour and know that my music is doing something for people who need it.

A fan-favorite on Freeform’s Cloak & Dagger, Noëlle Renée Bercy shines as Evita Fusilier. We caught up with the 26-yearold actress to talk behind-the-scenes moments, dream storylines and more. Let’s talk Cloak & Dagger - what is it about the show that initially drew you in? I loved the concept of a coming-of-age story with characters that come from very different backgrounds and learn that they are not so different after all. I also loved the fact that it’s based in my hometown! Tell us about Evita - what’s been your favorite part about portraying her? Evita is a headstrong young lady that knows what she wants and knows how to get it. She’s a natural healer, as many women are. She is everything but the stereotypical damsel in distress superhero girlfriend. I love that we have so many similarities and we have very similar personalities. Any memorable behind-the-scenes moments that you can share with us? I remember this moment from the pilot and I don’t think I’ll ever forget it. The background actors were asking me who the director was and when I asked them to guess, they kept pointing to this or that white man. It felt so great to point to Gina and say “No, the director is the black woman in the hoodie.” What can you tell us about what Evita gets into this season? This season, we dive deeper into Voodoo than Evita has ever personally experienced thus far. And maybe even farther than she’d ever expected to go.

What’s the fan reaction been like from these new episodes? Everyone seems to have a new level of respect for Evita. Which is nice, especially coming from die-hard Tyrandy fans. They recognize her growth, sacrifice and contributions. What’s a storyline that you think would be fun to explore for Evita in future episodes? I would love to see a deep dive into Evita’s origin story. We have yet to meet her parents, so there is so much more to explore. How does the cast like to bond offscreen? Dave and Busters is our favorite spot to get everyone together and just have a great time! What are you loving on TV lately? The OA and You are taking all of my time right now. I love suspense! I’m also obsessed with Jane the Virgin! When you think of your ultimate dream role, what comes to mind? My dream role would be one that I wrote and directed. Any special message for fans? I just want to say thank you. Thank you for your support, your time, and all of your kind words. It honestly means the world to me.

Set to star in ABC’s highly anticipated drama series, Grand Hotel, Chris Warren has cemented himself as one to watch. We talked to the rising actor about his new role, memorable set moments and more.

Let’s talk Grand Hotel - what is it about the show that initially drew you in? As soon as I read the script, I immediately felt a connection to Jason. He’s such a hard worker and has such a big heart. I really felt for him and understood him. As far as the show goes, it’s exciting to be a part of such a diverse and multi-cultural cast. Even behind the scenes, we have a huge percentage of writers, directors and crew that are women and people of color. Honestly. It’s a testament to Eva [Longoria] who ensured that the show portrayed the real America, in front and behind the scenes.

of developing the film into a TV series; what’s that been like for you? Nice Iranian Girl is a film my wife and I did that is inspired from her real-life experiences: being a refugee, growing up in a multi-cultural household and struggling with identity. Bringing that kind of story to life has been such an amazing journey. I’ve learned so much being on the production side of things and seeing all the work and grind that goes into actually making these things happen. I have a new-found respect for everyone behind the scenes.

What can you tell us about Jason and what viewers can expect from him? Jason is the audience’s eyes into everything going on behind the scenes at the hotel. He’s the one that the other characters all confide in and the one that everyone trusts. But there’s more to his story than meets the eye and I’m very excited about the audience going on the journey of his story arc from the beginning of the season to the end.

What are you loving on TV lately? Line of Duty is a British show that I am addicted to! From the acting to the writing to production, it is always on point.

What’s it been like to have Eva Longoria on set as the director/exec producer? Eva is one of a kind. Because she is an actress and knows what it’s like to be on the other side, she’s like the actor whisperer now. Whether she’s directing us, producing the show or just giving us solid advice, she really has a deeper understanding of how to communicate with us, and bring out the best from the whole cast. Tell us about Nice Iranian Girl and the process

When you think of your ultimate dream role, what comes to mind? A role that is complex and complicated. Someone battling personal demons but trying to overcome them. I think a role like that would push me out of my comfort zone. I always want to be evolving and growing as an actor. What’s on your bucket list for 2019? Honestly, being a part of this amazing show is a dream come true. So, everything on my bucket list for 2019 is already checked off! Any special message for fans? I’m really grateful to all the people that have supported me over the years. I appreciate the love and hope to make you proud!

A boss babe in every sense, Adelaine Morin is on her way to running her own empire. With an online presence that grows by the day, the 21-year-old Canadian splits her time between being a content creator on YouTube, a social media influencer, and has most recently taken on the role of an entrepreneur by launching her own brand/line. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, Morin was tapped by Tarte Cosmetics to collaborate on a makeup palette, which launched earlier this year to huge success. Though she makes it look easy, Adelaine’s work ethic is one that goes unmatched. From business meetings to brand deals, she’s got the power and ambition to make it all happen.

For those familiar with Adelaine, there are two things that are synonymous with her: the bright color of yellow and her passion for dismantling the competitive nature between women. “When I was younger, I would constantly deal with mean girls,” she reveals. “These girls were considered the ‘popular group’ at my school and I guess it didn’t really help that I did YouTube because, at the time, it just made me stand out and seem weird. These girls would physically shove me in the halls, purposely bump into me, call me names behind my back, and make fun of my YouTube channel. My confidence was so low at the time and I just never understood why they were bullying me. Eventually, I stood up for myself and asked one of the girls why she was so mean to me. I know now that hurt people hurt other people and what didn’t kill me has only made me stronger because I love who I am today. That’s why I love the saying ‘Girls Supporting Girls’ so much – I know what it’s like for women to tear other women down but the truth is, we are not in a competition. We rise by lifting each other up. I hope that by seeing young girls wearing this phrase on hoodies, it can stop the stigma around girls feeling like they have to be so competitive and mean to each other.”

Having just celebrated the one-year anniversary of her brand’s launch, Adelaine’s already got big plans for the future. “My number one goal is to sell on Amazon and in retail stores,” she says. “I want my Adelangels, or anyone in general, to see the apparel line anywhere they go and have the ability to purchase it easily and quickly. Down the line, I would also LOVE to have a dog line, jeans, leggings, and more accessories. Seeing everything that we’ve been able to accomplish in this short time just makes me so excited for what we’re going to come up with in the future!” Always one to find a way to give back, Adelaine made sure to bring that purpose into her work. “Seeing my Adelangels wear my merch is the most magical thing,” she gushes. “Not only because it’s stopping the stigma around girls competing against one another, but a portion of every sale goes towards a girl’s non-profit organization. Last November, we raised $10,000 for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and during this past month, we raised money for Centre for Addiction and Mental Health! Doing things like this with my apparel line makes me feel like I’m doing something that’s bigger than myself. As an Aquarius, I’m a huge humanitarian so giving back just fuels my soul and makes me so incredibly happy – that’s why it’s so easy to be so passionate about it.” When she isn’t busy with working and designing her next merch drop, Adelaine’s focus is on creating YouTube videos. “Seeing everyone’s comments and edits make me so happy,” she says. “I’m so proud of being a YouTuber and I can confidently say that I plan on making videos for as long as my audience wants to watch them.”

Her dream collaboration? Riverdale’s Madelaine Petsch. “She’s a huge inspiration of mine,” Adelaine shares. “She has a hit series out and still posts weekly on her YouTube channel, which I think is amazing. I look up to her so much and we’ve actually talked about doing a collab video together; it just didn’t end up working out because of our crazy schedules. I hope to work with her or meet her one day because she’s the one that inspired me to start taking Improv classes and try to get into acting or hosting! I’ve always loved theater and performing but I would never want to lose my audience on YouTube – they are my true fan base so I’d never want to give that up completely.”

I had been working with Tarte for over year on the palette and it was all so surreal. I remember flying to New York to visit Tarte’s headquarters and it all just felt like a dream – it’s an honor that my absolute favorite brand chose to work with me and to see the palette selling so well just shows that it was a good fit! Seeing my Adelangels tweet/tag me using the palette makes my heart so warm and knowing that something that I thought up in my head is now available in Ulta stores is just amazing.”

Recalling her venture in releasing a palette with Tarte, Adelaine describes the process as an unforgettable one. “Creating a makeup product is very different from creating anything I’ve ever

skincare college for over six months and am now considered a certified makeup artist and skincare tech! It was so important to me to be involved in every aspect of the palette – I knew the packaging was perfect for travel and that it was an all-in-one palette that people would love. I actually talked about this in my reveal video but one of my favorite shades, Mama Morin, was inspired by my friend Patrick Starr’s collection with MAC. He had named a lipstick after his mom and I remember feeling so happy every time I used it. Family is so important to me so being able to incorporate my mom, who’s done so much for me that I can’t even begin to explain, makes me feel like there is love and purpose in my palette.” Though it’s easy to get swept away in life’s chaos, the key to finding balance is, according to Adelaine, investing in your mental health. “I’m actually not so great at managing a work/life balance but I’m working on it,” she reveals. “As someone who is their own boss, it’s hard to know when to check into your job and when to check out. I’m a workaholic and pretty much work 24/7. It tires me out sometimes but my passion and love for what I do always outweighs any negatives. I try to keep Saturdays and Sundays as my days off so that I don’t get burnt out, which I remember feeling at the beginning of the year. I don’t

think I’ve ever talked about that before but I remember feeling so stuck and clicking the ‘upload’ button just wasn’t feeling rewarding or bringing me happiness anymore. I never really took a break but I decided to invest in my mental health by getting a life coach and an assistant – both of them have been so much help to me. It’s always a good thing to invest in your mental health because you and your sanity should always be your number one priority.” Her special message to fans? “I love you all so much,” she shares. “I truly believe I have the most dedicated and positive fandom out there. We’re all just girls supporting girls and I love that we lift each other up online and talk about random silly things that make us happy like puppies, home decor, and makeup! I wouldn’t be living this crazy life if it wasn’t for you and I’m so grateful. I’m truly the luckiest girl in the world and wouldn’t trade you all for anything!” As for what’s up next, Adelaine’s just taking things as they come. “2019 has been a huge blur for me,” she laughs. “From starting the year feeling burnt out, to taking my mental health more seriously, to graduating makeup and skincare college, to releasing my first ever makeup palette collaboration with Tarte, to releasing my first music video, to having my first solo magazine cover. I have no idea what I’m going to do the rest of the year but I’m excited to figure it all out…after I take a few more naps!”

Set to star in the newest season of Netflix’s political action-drama, Designated Survivor, Benjamin Charles Watson can be seen as the intelligent and unapologetic Dontae Evans. We talked to the actor about what viewers can expect in the upcoming episodes! Let’s talk Designated Survivor - what is it about the show that initially drew you in? What drew me to the show was the aspect of politics, specifically American politics. Before starting this show, I wasn’t fully invested and interested in the topic. Before bringing Dontae to life, I started researching and diving into the history of American politics and specifically the electoral process. As an actor, I was curious about playing a completely different character than I have in the past and also diving into subject matters I’ve always been interested to explore. What can you tell us about your role as Dontae Evans and what viewers can expect to see from him? Dontae Evans is a character I’ve had such an enjoyable time playing. Throughout the ten episodes this season, you’ll be able to see Dontae grow as he becomes part of a family within The White House and you’ll also see a man trying to find acceptance and love. Dontae balances love and his career and I’m very envious as to how he’s capable of balancing them.I simply can’t wait for his light to shine onto the world. He’s going to impact a lot of lives and is going to represent a lot of African American men who feel as if they don’t have a voice. How would you describe this upcoming season? If you’ve seen the first two seasons, you’ll realize that season three feels like an entirely different show! The writing is incredible and it keeps you on the edge of your seats. With only 10 episodes this season, we’ve had to sharpen the nuances of the characters and the story and I know it will be well received.

Are there any memorable behind-thescenes moments from filming that you can share with us? My favorite behind the scene moment has to be watching Italia Ricci teach Julie White how to play chess in between scene changes. We were all huddled around learning how to effectively play masterfully. Tell us about the upcoming series, Snowpiercer - what should viewers be expecting from the dystopian thriller? I’m very excited for Snowpiercer! Viewers should expect to be transported to a world and future unlike they’ve ever seen. The wardrobes are amazing and the fight choreography is exquisite. The tone of the show has relevance to our modern-day world that I found intriguing and I know it’ll resonate with the viewers. When you think of your ultimate dream role, what comes to mind? My ultimate role has changed over the last few years. Recently, I’ve been obsessed with action-packed adventure or thriller types of film. I think that’d be really cool to be apart of! Any special message for fans? I just want to thank my fans for all the support they’ve given me over the years. I’m beyond thrilled that I’ve had the ability to create and bring characters to life that have touched your souls. Your support means so much to me, especially on days when I’m having an off day. My passion for storytelling drives my soul and it makes everything worthwhile when you’ve connected to the essence of the characters I’ve played!

With a sound and style that’s uniquely their own, VOILÀ are about to become your new fave. Comprised of Luke Eisner and Gus Ross, the pop-rock duo opened up about their sound, inspirations and more. Take us back to the beginning; what can you tell us about the moment when VOILÀ became more than just an idea? Luke: We were actually doing EDM music at first! We opened up for Martin Garrix in my hometown, Milwaukee, and it was the first time we played some original songs for a crowd that size. Afterwards, riding high on that euphoric feeling, we went to one of those little shopping tents that they have at festivals and that’s where Gus spotted two rings with the “No Entry” symbol on them. We both got one to signify that there’s no going back from here - we’ve been working on music together ever since! What’s the creating/songwriting process usually like for you guys? Gus: I’m obsessed with melody and production and my goal is to get us to the most polished product we can from the onset of the song idea. Luke: I’m obsessed with lyrics. Put them together and you get a song, haha! How would you describe your personal sound? Gus: I grew up singing Jazz music which influences how I sing quite a bit. I also came to LA to work as a producer originally. A lot of our sound comes from the fact that I produce and mix most of the records myself. Luke: I am inspired by literature and screenplays to flesh out song concepts. I am also very heavily influenced by the Nashville/Country

style of songwriting. I grew up learning classical Spanish fingerstyle guitar which gives a bit of Latin flair to our instrumentals. Who would you love to hit the road with? Gus: For me, it would be an act like Coldplay or The Kooks! Luke: The Maine, Andrew McMahon, and The Goo Goo Dolls come to mind for me! What are you loving in music right now? Gus: Lewis Capaldi, 100%. When he rips at it vocally, it’s unreal. Luke: I’m a big fan of Goody Grace and his songwriting and communication style. I also feel the same way about Dermot Kennedy. With a growing social following, what’s the best way for fans to get your attention online? Luke: Just send us a DM! We check Instagram the most. We love talking to fans and hearing their stories. We also love after-show pizza parties so message us if you’re coming to a show and we’ll treat you to some pizza after! What’s on your bucket list for 2019? Gus: To play our new record - coming out this summer - every night on tour. And to teach people the words and get people moving and happy with the work that Luke and I do every single day. Luke: I’m going to meet Sam Hunt. He’s my favorite songwriter and I’m putting it in writing so it has to happen! That’s how it works right?

If Lo Nightly isn’t already on your radar, it’s time to change that. With lyrics as mesmerizing as her vocals, the singer-songwriter is making quite the wave in the music scene. With an EP already in the works, it’s time for you to get to know Lo! Tell us about your single, “Nobody Like You” - What’s the story behind the track? A few years ago, I went through a pretty rough breakup and I tried to do everything I could to get over him. After a few months of not being able to figure it out, I realized that numbing, replacing, and distracting wasn’t going to solve my problems, it would just create more. So I decided to write about it and this song, in a way, set me free. What’s the reaction from fans been like? Putting this song out was scary for me, just because it’s so honest. But the truth is, the reaction to this song has been the best so far, out of all the songs I’ve released. I feel like it’s been rewarding. I was terrified but I decided not to let fear dictate the music I put out. The response from everyone has been so overwhelming. Everyone is just being so kind. It makes me feel safe to release the music that is really vulnerable. After writing music for a few years, what inspired you to finally start releasing it? Two things inspired me to release my own music. One would be this one song that I wrote called “Deep End” and when I wrote it, it was the first song that I couldn’t imagine putting up for pitch or giving to another artist. It was too much of my heart and seeing someone else sing it just didn’t feel right. And second, I was at panorama fest in NY and Frank Ocean’s performance of ‘Good Guy’ literally brought my blood to a freeze. I was speechless. You would’ve thought that this was his first or last performance. And I just remember looking around at the crowd and everyone was just so

in the moment. I remember thinking to myself, “I’d love to bring people together like that.” That was the final push and that also was the day I wrote “Money” - my third single. What’s the process been like for you as you work on your EP? It’s been emotional. It’s the story of my first heartbreak and even though it’s been so long, when you are in the studio and you’re digging back into those scars for your art, it can really mess with your head. It’s all the songs that I’ve been too scared to release. It really shows the beginning of where I was the day we broke up, to where I am now, 2 years later. It shows the sadness, the anger, the annoyance even. It shows the realizations and closure. But as emotional as it’s been, it also has brought so much clarity to me. I’ve never been more sure of what I’m doing and who I’m doing it with because in reliving some of that love and heartbreak, everything is so clear to me. Without this heartbreak, I wouldn’t have this music and without this music, I wouldn’t be able to talk to people like I am right now. Life is about human connection to me and that’s what music is all about. What kind of sound/vibe can fans be expecting from it? I don’t know if I can explain it. I don’t know if it sounds like anyone because to me it just sounds like me. But it’s definitely a showcase of highs and lows. So you can expect a rollercoaster of emotions. Some of the songs are heartbreaking and I hope those songs show people that they aren’t alone. And then some will bring you clarity. Or at least I hope they do.

kaitlyn bernard A true star on the rise, Kaitlyn Bernard is making 2019 her year. We caught up with the actress to talk about her latest projects and what’s up next for her words by VANESSA SALLES photo by KRISTINE COFSKY

Tell us about The Professor! What was it that drew you to working on the movie? The Professor is a dark comedy drama that follows the life of a college professor (Johnny Depp) when he finds out he has a terminal illness and only 6 months to live. I play Taylor, Olivia’s girlfriend, who is the daughter of Johnny Depp’s character. Working with such big names was a really fantastic experience and amazing to be alongside such talented actors. Are there any memorable behind-the-scenes moments you can share with us? Getting the opportunity to chat with Johnny about some of the films that he’d been in and learning that he never watches his own movies! Growing up watching Depp’s films such as What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, made it all a very surreal experience!

(13 Reasons Why), and is based on the book written by Aaron Starmer. It’s a dark comedy about a group of high school seniors who are about to graduate, when all of the sudden, one by one, they start spontaneously combusting for no apparent reason. I loved working with our director (Brian Duffield) and had a really great time on set. Who are some people you’d love to get a chance to work with? I’d love to work with Natalie Portman; she’s been a role model of mine since I started acting. I absolutely loved her performance in Annihilation and some of her earlier work like Black Swan and The Professional.

What has the reaction been from viewers? The Professor just released in theaters, and has gotten a really positive response. It’s definitely a different role for Johnny, which he captures incredibly well.

What’s the best way for fans to get your attention online? I appreciate anyone who has seen my work and respects me as a performer. I love giving aspiring actors career advice. I especially appreciate people that follow me that have watched The Healer, as 100% of the proceeds from that film go back to children living with serious illnesses.

What can you tell us about your upcoming film, Spontaneous – what should viewers be expecting? Spontaneous is another feature film that I shot last year, starring Katherine Langford

What’s on your bucket list for 2019? I’ve started writing my own script that I hope to finish. I’m traveling to Costa Rica in August and will be moving to Los Angeles in September to further pursue my acting career! THE DAILY SHUFFLE 34
