Students advocate for deaf community ‘We just want people who have hearing losses or who are deaf to feel more at home.’ Lindsey Ortego,

BY Rose Velazquez rvelazquez@lsureveille.com Among the academic hustle and bustle, tireless athletic atmosphere and dynamic social scene, it seems like there’s a place for everyone on a campus. But the LSU Deaf and Hard of Hearing Club represents a community that often goes overlooked. Co-president and communication disorders senior Lauren Ortego, who is not hearing impaired, said students are often
hesitant about joining the organization because they are not deaf or hard of hearing. Ortego said many students struggle with understanding what deaf culture is and how to act around deaf people. The White House’s newly unveiled “It’s on Us” sexual assault awareness campaign is in the early stages of implementation at universities and colleges around the nation. President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden launched the campaign on Friday, which aims to prevent sexual assault,
change campus culture and better educate men. In a conference call to the White House, Tina Tchen, assistant to the President and Chief of Staff to the First Lady, said that the goal of the campaign is to “mentally shift the way we think about sexual assault.” The NCAA is a major sponsor of the campaign. Baton Rouge police arrested a 23-year-old man on attempted first-degree murder charges stemming from a Sept. 14 shooting behind Reggie’s Bar in Tigerland. Jerome Lamar Verret, of 3026 Monroe Avenue, turned himself in to the 4th District precinct and was arrested at 12:59 p.m. Monday after a warrant was issued for his arrest on Sept. 18. He was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish jail, according to book records. Verret is charged with shooting two men, a 20-year-old and a 23-year-old, both of whom sustained non-life-threatening injuries — one in the abdomen and another in the leg. The shooting was believed to be a result of an argument among the men.

Although she doesn’t have a college degree, Ann Duplessis, newly elected chairwoman of the LSU Board of Supervisors, said she brings diversity to the board with her degree in life. Gov. Bobby Jindal appointed Duplessis, a former state senator, in 2012 after the Louisiana Senate rejected his first
attempt to place Duplessis on the board in 2011. She is the only female member of the Board, the only African-American and the only member who did not financially contribute to the governor’s campaign. However, Duplessis said the diversity she offers to the Board doesn’t come from her race or
