In addition to construction throughout the city, the University also has active construction sites throughout campus. The largest project underway is the southern expansion of Tiger Stadium. Construction began in fall 2012 and is expected to be ÀQLVKHG E\ IDOO ³ just in time for the football season, according to The Lemoine Company Project Portfolio. It will be expanding its central building by 270,000

Unfortunately, incoming freshmen will be surrounded by construction for most of their college experience at LSU, but larger and louder crowds in Death Valley and the relaxing leisure pool will make for fair consolations.

Baton Rouge hosts cheap, good eats Every freshman makes the same mistake: eating on-campus food for every meal, even though there are a m p l e places surrounding campus to grab cheap grub. TREY LABAT StartStaff Writer ing with the places within walking distance of campus, Raoul’s Deli offers one of the best and most affordable burgers in Baton Rouge. Don’t be fooled by the seemingly run-down building or the Five Guys Burgers and Fries chain right across the street or the seemingly run-down building — Raoul’s offers juicy hand-made patties for a great price. Right next to Five Guys and Raoul’s lies the Mexican paradise that is Chipotle. Again, some may be fooled by the Serrano’s Salsa Company across the street, but Chipotle is the more cost-effective spot of the two. The not-so-secret PHQX LV VRPHWKLQJ GHÀQLWHly worth checking out with a quick Google search. On Thursdays, Buffalo Wild Wings offers a special 60-cent-per-wing deal on boneless wings, which other wing places struggle to top. For those freshmen with sushi cravings, Kaminari is the place to go. The sushi buffet (yes, it’s a buffet) offers a great selection of sushi throughout the day and even gives patrons the option of fresh hibachi. Lunchtime pricing offers the best deal, as it gets a little pricey at night. Right next to Kaminari
is Pita Pit, a pita shop that offers plenty of options and even does breakfast pitas. Pita Pit also delivers until 3 a.m., which can prove to be convenient for late-night study sessions. One can’t talk breakfast around campus without mentioning Baton Rouge staple Louie’s Cafe. The 24-hour breakfast joint has been running since 1941, and offers a home-cooked breakfast vibe. Louie’s is a late-night favorite for those returning to the dorms from Tigerland as well. Places within driving distance of campus are plentiful as well. Kolache Kitchen is another solid breakfast place. The recently opened restaurant — specializing in different types of Mexican breakfasts — offers cheap food close to campus. If the appetite for burgers isn’t satiated by Raoul’s, the traveling food truck Curbside Burgers offers what The Daily Reveille determined to be the best burger in Baton Rouge in spring 2012. For the freshmen who love sports, Walk-On’s is the trademark sports bar near campus. The sports bar offers a wide selection of food, including a Dunkin’ Donuts bread pudding, and ample places to watch TV throughout the restaurant and bar area. University parking proves difficult This bit of advice for incoming students can go a long way in saving their time, aggravation and money: be careful and aware of where you park your car. When parking anywhere in Baton Rouge, it is wise to JAMES MORAN observe all Contributing Writer posted rules and signs. Failure to do so can, and in this city, will often cost you. This is especially true when trying to park on campus. The University’s campus is notoriously short on parking spots, and the DeSDUWPHQW RI 3DUNLQJ 7UDIÀF and Transportation does not play games with those that

Just park between two white OLQHV LQ \RXU DVVLJQHG ]RQH and you’ll be good.â€? Don’t park without a permit, don’t park in the wrong lot and don’t park in a metered spot without paying the machine. Heed these warnings. Graham said his department hands out between 200 and 300 parking tickets
and has about 10 cars towed during the average day during the fall or spring. Don’t buy into the delusional belief that “it won’t happen to me.â€? Everyone believes that until they walk outside WR Ă€QG DQ HPSW\ VSRW ZKHUH their car used to be. The best way to avoid this hassle is to simply not park on campus. If possible to do so, walking to class or riding on the Tiger Trails bus are convenient alternatives to rolling the dice on parking. Parking in the wrong spot can be just as costly off-campus. If an apartment complex has visitor parking available, use it. Just about every complex has a
towing company on retainer to monitor their lots for visitors who park in reserved residential parking spots. Whether it is Guy’s Towing, DTS Towing or God forbid — the dreaded Riverside Towing, they will tow you without warning. If that wasn’t bad enough, you must hitch a ride to WKHLU RIÀFH LQ WKH PLGGOH RI nowhere and pay through the nose to retrieve your vehicle. There’s a lot of places where you can get away with parking wherever you FDQ ÀQG D VSRW EXW %DWRQ Rouge is not one of them. Just learn and follow the rules, and everything will work out OK. Fat Cow is known by customers to have “an irreverent sense of humor,â€? which is another reason why the name stuck. Be flexible, open to different majors Choosing your major can be a daunting experience as a freshman. We are basically thrust into this new world and asked at age 18 what we want our career to be and how we would TYLER NUNEZ like to be Contributing Writer d e f i n e d during our time in college. The cold hard truth is many 18-year-old students are not ready to make that kind of commitment to a career, even if they think they are. I know I was not. I simply did not have the knowledge or experience to make an informed decision on what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Two years, four majors and two universities into my collegiate career, I still had no idea what I wanted to do. The following is a list of lesson I learned from these experiences, and some helpful hints that will hopefully help you when choosing your major.
Changing your mind is a part of the natural process of making such an important decision. It does not mean you wasted any time. In all likelihood I will QHYHU ÀQG D SUDFWLFDO XVH for all of those calculus, engineering, physics, biology and organic chemistry FRXUVHV , WRRN LQ P\ ÀUVW two years. But I learned a lot of intangibles in these classes that a textbook simply cannot teach you, including how to take notes, how to work with a group and how to study. Keep an open mind.
Before I entered the college world, I kept my options limited to “importantâ€? professions, like engineering and medicine. As a result, I was somewhat lost when I realized neither these options was the path for me, and I was forced to rethink the way I approached my future career. perform an action, they answer three basic questions: what, how and why? Most people have a tendency to answer these questions in the order above. For example, when I FKRVH P\ Ă€UVW PDMRU , FKRVH engineering. I was going to take all the classes necessary to pass these classes, because I wanted to be successful. As you can see, none of these answers seem particularly inspired. The key is to the golden circle is to answer these questions in the opposite order: why, how then what? Using this method, I chose my current career path, and my thought process looked more like this: “I love sports, and writing has always been an unexplored interest of mine, so my dream would be to combine these two passions into a career. I will do this
by learning as much as I can about the subject and writing articles for as many people as I can get to read them, therefore I will pursue a career in sports journalism.� Since adopting this mindset, college has been a far more enjoyable and fulÀOOLQJ H[SHULHQFH You are going to hit some bumps in the road to graduation, and it may take \RX D ZKLOH WR ÀQG \RXU footing. But take it from someone with experience: If you ZRUN KDUG DQG ÀQG VRPHthing you love doing, school becomes more tolerable, studying becomes easier and you will be walking across the stage to receive your diploma before you know it. Study spots available on campus Ah, freshman year: all the experiences are new, the football games are more intense and the exams are a tad PRUH GLIÀcult. Every s t u d e n t ’s ÀUVW \HDU of college proves to be a learnLAWRENCE ing experience in BARRECA terms of Staff Writer academic preparation. In high school, plenty of teenagers were able to breeze through courses without once picking up a book or spending a weekend working on a project. However, those times are gone. Survival in college depends on a number of factors — most notably time management and determining when and where to crack open the textbooks. The key WR VXFFHVV LV ÀQGLQJ D SHDFHful place to plop down and begin learning all the concepts that you pretended to understand while dozing off during lectures. So here are a couple of spots on campus you might want to pay attention to when you’re preparing for your ÀUVW ZDYH RI H[DPV UPPER FLOORS OF MIDDLETON LIBRARY At some point, I’m sure one of your orientation leaders led your group of wide-eyed, excited incoming freshmen through the Quad. It’s a serene area, and everything from a fountain to a mini-auditorium can be found there. At the front of the Quad sits the one place many students call home on weeknights. The Middleton Library is a staple for any and every
skeleton. That’s right — a dinosaur skeleton. Actually, an Allosaurus skeleton to be exact. But let’s be realistic, who doesn’t want to study next to that?

It almost has everything a student would need: a coffee shop, computer labs, a coffee shop, rows of books, a coffee shop and plenty of cubicles and outlets to plug in electronics. Oh, and did I mention a coffee shop? There is one thing that many students don’t tend to realize until later in their freshman experience. There DUH PXOWLSOH à RRUV WR 0LGdleton Library, and they are glorious if a student is looking for a quiet place to study. *HQHUDOO\ WKH ÀUVW à RRU of the library serves the purpose of holding the CC’s Coffee House and providing plenty of tables for group projects. Go to the stairwell or elevators, and you’ll quickly notice what you’ve been PLVVLQJ 7KUHH XSSHU à RRUV each jam-packed with rows of books and study corners that provide a quiet, no-nonsense atmosphere for anyone looking to have a serious study session. Oh, and you can bring your coffee up there, so that’s
always convenient. HOWE-RUSSELL ATRIUM If your orientation leader hasn’t taken you toward the Howe-Russell Geoscience Complex, then I suggest taking a side-trip at one point or another — especially for those students interested in geology, archaeology or anything of the sort. The complex can be found just south of the Quad, and within its walls lays a number of different discoveries, maps, stones and tools. But the true gem of Howe-Russell is in its atrium. Howe-Russell’s atrium is a single room that becomes sun-bathed during the day, and it is a visually relaxing area to take in a good textbook. There are multiple tables and chairs laid out throughout the room, and silence is always encouraged. Take one look toward the ceiling, and a PDJQLÀFHQW IDQ SURYLGHV a peaceful setting for the room. Most importantly, though, is the dinosaur
BARNES & NOBLE, STARBUCKS This past year, the University campus underwent a slight change. The Barnes & Noble bookstore, which was formerly located in the Student Union, moved across the street, and it now stands as its own massive, visually appealing structure. Inside, students can ÀQG D QXPEHU RI DFFHVVRries to keep their attention; however, take the escalators XS RQH à RRU DQG VXGGHQO\ the scenery becomes a bit different. There are a few twoseat tables, some lounge chairs and other places to rest and read scattered WKURXJKRXW WKH VHFRQG à RRU making it a great place to crack open a notebook and start highlighting important material. Oh yeah, and there’s a 6WDUEXFNV RQ WKH ÀUVW à RRU We all know that’s what’s important here. As a freshman, your ÀUVW \HDU ZLOO KDYH LWV VKDUH of stressful nights, panic attacks and coffee-induced hangovers. If these spots don’t work for you, then go out and explore LSU’s massive campus for what it’s worth. There’s plenty to discover, and everyone eventuDOO\ ÀQGV WKH RQH SODFH WKDW works best.
