ngagement rings are often sizable investments. Money magazine reports the average engagement ring costs around $5,800.

An engagement ring symbolizes the start of a lifelong commitment and may even set the tone for a couple’s wedding day.

Jewelry styles are personal, and grooms-to-be should carefully research their significant others’ preferences in terms of precious metals, colors and gemstones. Even though tradition holds that a diamond gemstone is classic for engagement rings, these precious stones are not the only options. In fact, before World War II, just 10 percent of proposals involved diamond engagement rings.

That number jumped to 80 percent by 1990. However, many modern couples now lean toward other offerings not only for the uniqueness they provide, but also for the potential cost savings.

Those seeking something unique can embrace these engagement ring options. ► Amethyst: This vibrant, lavender-hued stone can be breathtaking when cut the correct way. Purple shades have long been associated with royalty, making an amethyst fitting for such an occasion as special as an engagement. Because amethysts, which are less expensive than diamonds, are a seven on the Mohs scale for gemstone hardness, they can be very durable. ► Knot rings: These rings

These rings can be particularly sentimental as they represent true, unbroken love. ► Opal: Gemstones, like flowers, have been assigned certain meanings. Tying the engagement ring to one of them can infuse more symbolism into the relationship. Opal, for example, represents love, passion, creativity, spontaneity, and inspiration. Those traits seem tailor-made for surprise proposals. ► Sapphire: While sapphire stones often are blue, they can also be yellow, green, pink, and white.

Sapphires are the third hardest mineral. A white sapphire can be the perfect

diamond replacement. ► Garnet or ruby: Red is the definitive color of love.

A Valentine’s Day proposal can be made even more special by presenting an engagement ring with a red gemstone. ► Moissanite: The jewelry source Brilliant Earth says moissanite is a gemstone first discovered in 1893 by Henri Moissan in a meteorite that fell to earth. rides and grooms understandably feel a little stress when planning their weddings. Adding to the pressure is the fact that, according to a WeddingWire.com report, the average couple in their 30s spends $32,000 on their wedding.

That is a lot of money riding on one day.

1. Use labels. Once the guest list is finalized, create a database of guests’

The destination wedding industry is seeing a rising trend for couples opting to tie the knot at exotic locations with multi-day programs, lavish settings at luxurious properties, or looking to book unique events that can only be enjoyed in the chosen destinations.

Some picks include tequila tastings in Cabo San Lucas, a sunset champagne catamaran excursion in the Caribbean or even taking part in a group cleansing by a shaman. The possibilities have no boundaries.

For Timmi Grablander and Makel Juarez of Mitchell, travelling the world to distant places has always been a passion that unites them. Turning a birthday trip for Grablander and Juarez into the day of their dreams, while visiting the romantic and picturesque Greek island of Santorini, seemed natural.

“It’s your special day,” Grablander said. “So why not make your dreams come true.”

The couple of seven years had packed their birth certificates along with their passports to board a plane towards a new chapter in their lives.

“Timmi had dreamed about this location for many years and we were finally able to go,” Juarez said.

“Once we decided we are going to Santorini, one of the prettiest places on this planet, we figured, why not get married.”

The couple decided to make their special day private and personal while vacationing

for two weeks on the island, nestled in the southern part of the Aegean Sea. With that decision, they said they left behind the worries about inviting a big wedding party.

“What really mattered was the two of us and this beautiful destination,” Juarez said.

Imerovigli is a village on the island of Santorini, about 200 miles south of Greece’s mainland, and is the largest island of a former volcanic caldera. It’s mostly famous for its breathtaking sunsets with the suitable nickname “balcony to the Aegean.”

“It’s beautiful but it did turn out to be a little bit lastminute, although we had talked and planned before the trip,” Juarez said. “In the end, it all worked out. The mayor of one of the villages married us and it was just as formal as any other ceremony could be.”

The journey for a lifetime started for Alysia Tegethoff and Marty Plambeck in the Black Hills in South Dakota during a hike up to Black Elk Peak, formerly known as Harney Peak. The outdoor enthusiasts met seven years ago and enjoy spending their weekends and free time hiking, kayaking and biking as a couple or with friends.

Last fall, the lovebirds headed west to Deadwood to celebrate Tegethoff’s birthday on Sept. 22.

After getting ready for a night out, Plambeck suggested they make their way up Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak) to take a sunset picture before going out for dinner.

“When we reached the trail, Marty suddenly started speeding up and jogging up the hill,” Tegethoff said. “I was freezing and thinking

Plambeck had already reached the peak and started positioning the camera when Tegethoff caught up with him. Plambeck hugged the love of his life while posing towards the camera, when he suddenly got on one knee and proposed.

For Tegethoff, this will be her first international trip and she is excited to join in with her family and friends for a special vacation.

“It’s just great to be able to say, ‘Yes we have been there, we got married in Jamaica,’ and that was a huge factor in deciding for a destination wedding,” Tegethoff said.

According to survey research by the popular wedding website The Knot, the average cost of an international or destination wedding came in at $25,800, while domestic weddings can average $27,840. But there’s a number of factors that can affect those costs, as well.

The most important thing for both couples was, and is, making lifelong, lasting memories of the first day in the first chapter of their new lives, something they hope to never forget.

“It was surreal,” Tegethoff said. “It was so out of character for Marty. He is not one to make big announcements on birthdays or holidays. I was very surprised.”

The Mitchell couple plans to tie the knot in a warmer climate, with their vows planned for Jan. 24, 2020 in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

“Getting married on the beach was always something I wanted to do,” Tegethoff said.

“When he actually proposed, I knew right then: I’m planning that dream wedding.”

Tegethoff is working with a professional travel agent to help her with the planning and decision-making process step-by-step.

“I would still be scrolling through pages of resorts if I did not have somebody on my side to guide me through this,” Tegethoff said. “She really wanted to get to know us and our likes.”

vendors are on the list. But even if they’re not, keep an open mind and use the show as a chance to compare offerings. ecause fashion preferences were once ornate and dependent on precise fits, ready-towear clothing really did not become widely available until the early 20th century.

Because ready-to-wear clothing is so readily available, the average person may be unfamiliar with custom-made or tailored items. In fact, a couple’s wedding may be the only instance in their lives when they require the services of a seamstress or tailor.

Here’s how brides-to-be can navigate the process of finding and being fitted for a dress. ► Try on sample gowns. The first step is to make your rounds to various gown shops and try on the samples they have available. Most sample sizes will not be the size you wear every day, so expect them to be ill-fitting. Do not be discouraged. Once a gown is chosen, the dress shop will take your measurements and order the gown according to the manufacturerÕs sizing guide. Again, this can be shocking, since the size will likely be larger than what you wear in street clothes. Some shops will also order a little larger to allow for adequate tailoring. ► Schedule the first fitting. The first fitting should be anywhere from eight to 12 weeks before the wedding date, according to experts at WeddingWire, an online wedding information provider. This is the

time it takes to complete most standard alterations.

Complex customizations can take even longer.

Brides should also budget a minimum of $500 for alterations, which may or may not be included in the price of the dress. ► Bring shoes and undergarments. Remember to bring along the exact shoes and undergarments you will wear with your gown. A change in shoes or bra/ corset can result in the alterations fitting poorly the next time. Bring these items along to all subsequent fittings. ► Speak up. Martha Stewart Weddings suggests speaking up at fittings if anything is uncomfortable or needs tweaking. Seamstresses are masters at their crafts, but only if they understand the desires of the bride. ► Check the details. The second fitting is designed to check that all issues from the first fitting have been addressed, the gown is comfortable and you can move freely. At the last fitting, ask the maid of honor to come along so that she understands how to bustle or help you handle complicated straps or closures.

5. Keep bugs at bay. Spray chair and reception table legs with insect repellent. Dryer sheets also can be tucked into inconspicuous spots to keep bugs away.

6. Use page markers for seating.

Use multicolored, self-sticking page markers to create easy seating arrangements. Each color can represent a category: His, Hers, Friends, Work.

7. Make a photo clothesline. A clever and inexpensive idea is to pin photos of the couple to a string, cataloging how they met and their time together leading up to the wedding.

8. Use loose flower centerpieces.

For example, your biological father may walk you down the aisle, while your stepfather may enjoy the first dance. ► Order flowers and gifts for all. Purchase flowers and wedding party gifts for all of the special people in your lives, including your stepfamily.

Weddings can be complicated affairs when factoring in blended families. With patience and compassion, such families can enjoy a beautiful and happy day.

Picking the right photographer to capture your wedding

O

f all the things on a wedding to-do list, choosing a wedding photographer is up near the top, just after booking a venue. When picking a photographer, a couple should consider their budget, the quality of the images and the photographer’s style and personality.

Seasoned professional photographers Joni Rasmussen of J. Lynn Studios and Laura Wenande of L.O. Imijri recommend asking questions.

Wenande said it’s important to ask “..are they equipt to shoot both outdoor and low-lighting situations, do they have backup equipment and a camera that has dual shooting cards?”

“Pick someone who can shoot in more than one situation,” Rasmussen agreed. “The lighting will change and if you don’t have good lighting, you don’t have a good photo.”

Because of the amount of time and dedication photographers put into each wedding, many only shoot a certain amount of weddings each year.

Both Rasmussen and Wenande book around 20 weddings per year, with summer and fall having the most events.

With the limited number of spots available,

Rasmussen recommends booking a photographer one to two years ahead of the big day.

“I want to give each bride and groom my best work and my best me. I can’t do that if I’m overworked,” Rasmussen said.

“I always look at my schedule not just for that day but for the entire month before I book.”

Rasmussen and Wenande also like to meet with future couples before any contracts are signed.

“Everyone’s got different personalities, but some personalities just don’t work that well together,” Rasmussen said. “Wedding photos are the longest thing you’re going to do on your wedding day. You want someone you want to be around and who wants to be around you.”

During the first meeting, the details of the budget, wedding day, the couple’s tastes and tentative timeline are discussed.

“If we’re a match made in heaven and they like the pricing then we book,” Wenande said.

Much like other photographers, Wenande includes an engagement session in many of her wedding packages. She recommends doing an engagement session with the wedding photographer as it gives the couple and photographer a chance
