State Fair officials implementing safety measures to welcome fair goers

espite the risks that come with hosting large events in the midst of coronavirus, South Dakota State Fair officials are confident their safety measures will keep attendees safe. From signage encouraging social distancing to staggered tables spread out for fair food lovers, the State Fair may look a bit different this year with the pandemic lingering. “The health and safety of our fair goers and visitors is top priority,” said Candi Briley, assistant manager of the State Fair. “We have a number of health and safety measures that we will be implementing, and we are hoping for a fun and safe fair.” To implement the most effective safety precautions at this year’s 135th annual State Fair in Huron, fair officials have been working closely with the state Department of Health. Briley has found a way to make
social distancing signs a little fun. Staying true to the theme of the State Fair, Briley said the signage will have a comical twist in hopes to catch more fair goers attention. “We want to keep everything fair-friendly, and one of our signs talks about keeping six feet away from each other, which should be the length of about six corn dogs,” Briley said. “The signs will be along the entryways and around the fairgrounds. Reminding people to social distance is the key.” According to Briley, there will be a designated sanitation crew tasked with deep cleaning various areas throughout the fairgrounds. In addition, fair crew members will have access to COVID-19 testing during and after the event through the help of local healthcare professionals. “They will be continually cleaning, especially in those high contact areas, so we will be cleaning those often,” Briley said.

Changes in store for 4-H events at 2020 South Dakota State Fair

URON — Attendees of the 2020 South Dakota State Fair can expect some changes to the annual 4-H events due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While the worldwide pandemic canceled several fairs and events at the county level in South Dakota, the signature summer gathering in Huron will proceed on schedule with several modifications to traditional staples, including the livestock shows and the youth display areas of the fair. “Given the unprecedented challenges associated with COVID-19, we are pleased to offer a modified 4-H Division of the 2020 South Dakota State Fair,” said organizers in a document outlining changes to this year’s event. “It will be a unique logistical challenge and we appreciate your adaptability in advance.”
The document lists three guiding principles in the decision-making process that led to those event changes: the safety of 4-H participants, volunteers and staff; maintaining program quality and the focus on positive youth development and retaining as many in-person educational opportunities as are reasonably feasible, with additional consideration toward 4-H members at or near the conclusion of their 4-H journeys. Many of the changes are outlined in the 23-page document posted on the South Dakota State Extension website. Attendees of the fair
this year are asked to abide by the following precautions: ► Exhibitors who are sick or symptomatic should stay at home. ► To maintain physical distancing and relieve congestion, distances will increase between animal stalls and exhibitors in the arena. This will reduce the overall number of animals per exhibitor in most species. Shows, stalls or events that could not reasonably meet physical distancing guidelines while still maintaining program integrity have been cancelled, moved to another date or virtualized. ► Though Extension organizers cannot close off events within the broader context of the State Fair, they discourage attendance by non-essential individuals. Music, entertainment on tap for 2020 South Dakota State Fair

Several musical and entertainment acts will be found at the Beer Garden, Centennial Stage, DeSmet Farm Mutual Insurance Stage, Farm Bureau Dakotaland Stage, Midway Roadhouse and the NorthWestern Energy Freedom Stage. New rides, amusements planned for SD State Fair
By Mitchell Republic URON — Rides and fun for all ages are planned for the 2020 South Dakota State Fair, with Goldstar Amusements returning as the carnival company. According to organizers, three amusement ride companies who traditionally serve South Dakota venues have joined forces to ensure fairs in South Dakota have a complete fun and fabulous Midway. Goldstar Amusements and partnering carnival companies will feature a full Midway including new rides, Vertigo 80 and Samba Balloons. The Vertigo 80 will take fairgoers on a ride up an 80-foot tower while swinging at 10 revolutions per minute. The Samba Balloons ride is like flying through the air in a hot air balloon; deemed perfect for children and adults. Daily ride wristbands will be available for purchase on grounds for $25. The South Dakota State Fair has also partnered with various organizations to provide ride pass discounts. The Passport to Fun weekly ride pass can be purchased for $52 at the Huron Chamber and Visitors Bureau located at 1725 Dakota Avenue South and will be available beginning

Aug. 11 through Sept. 4. Cash or check will be accepted. If purchased at the carnival during the fair, the Passport to Fun is $58. Fairgoers may also pick up a $3 off daily ride wristband coupon by visiting the State Fair Administration Office located in Nordby Exhibit Hall on the State Fairgrounds. This coupon is valid Thursday, Friday, and Monday during the fair. On Wednesday, Sept. 2, which is Preview Day, Goldstar Amusements will run from 5 to 10 p.m. for $1 rides. On Sept. 3 and Sept. 4, the carnival will run from noon to midnight and from 10 a.m. to midnight on September 5-6. On the last day of the fair, Monday, Sept. 7, the carnival will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Health and safety precautions will include hand sanitizer stations placed throughout the Midway and frequent cleaning and sanitizing of rides. All carnival employees will undergo daily self-symptom and temperature checks. The 2020 South Dakota State Fair will run from Thursday, Sept. 3 through Monday, Sept. 7, with Preview Night on Sept. 2.

On average, the State Fair sees upward of 200,000. While Briley anticipates the attendance for this year’s State Fair to drop a bit, she is proud that the festivities will go on, which kicks off Sept. 3 and wraps up Sept. 7. Briley said fair officials are closely monitoring the COVID-19 case numbers in South Dakota, and will continue to do so during the weeklong event. Although the state saw its highest single-day increase of coronavirus cases since the start of the pandemic on Aug. 22 with 251, Briley said the fair is moving full steam ahead. However, she emphasized that fair officials are remaining flexible if an outbreak were to occur. “We have kept our planning flexible to respond to different things as needed to be prepared in that manner,” Briley said. On the food side of the fair, Briley said tables will be staggered around with enough distance for fair goers to sit down and enjoy the wide variety of food vendors. The vendors are also being asked to keep self-serve condiments behind their counters to

cut down on hand to hand contact among customers. Considering the fair is an outdoor event, it provides more space for social distancing, which Briley hopes will help attendees practice the safety measures fair officials are encouraging. “You do hear events being held outside allow for people to distance themselves more, but we want to do everything we can to keep everyone safe” Briley said. Regardless of the risks that fair officials are taking on with hosting the event, Briley hopes the fair provides the type of fun experience for all who attend. “We’re looking forward to putting on the best fair that we possibly can,” Briley said.

All hands-on outreach activities scheduled for the armory have been cancelled, 4-H t-shirt pick-up zone will now occur near the stage in Nordby and there will be no general 4-H information booth. The robotics event has been postponed to 2021, the Volunteer & Shooting Sports Halls of Fame Ceremonies event has also been postponed to next year, though honorees will be recognized online this fall and invited to next year’s ceremony. ► Within specified 4-H zones, facial coverings are strongly encouraged for exhibitors, crew and audience. Exhibitors should practice showing their animals while wearing a covering to be confident on show day in case safety standards are re-strengthened by the time of the State Fair. If needed, the only event exception will be for public presentations. ► Attendees will notice increased opportunities for hand washing and sanitizing throughout the fairgrounds property. Attendees are encouraged to use them regularly. ► Human bottleneck areas will be lessened or eliminated in 4-H zones. In particular, access to livestock show line-up areas will be restricted to youth only. ► High contact surface areas will be sanitized regularly.
