My desire to be a teacher has been a part of my life since I was a little girl. I always loved to play school after I came home from school.

That desire continued throughout my high school days so I always tell my students that it was in my blood. I love working with the different age levels of students. Each day the students bring a variety of new challenges for me to tackle. There is no greater feeling in my heart than when I see my students walk across that stage at graduation and realize what we have accomplished along the way.

From the time I was a little girl I wanted to be a teacher.

I wrote the ABC’s on the cement blocks in our basement.

After that my dad built me a chalkboard and I would line up my stuffed animals and play school everyday. Teaching has evolved significantly over the years. Ultimately it still comes down to building relationships of mutual respect with students. The rest will come. I really love when former students send me a note, stop in for a visit, or just come up and give me a hug.

Lyman

Lyman School District is undergoing a major building project continuing through the next two years. The two-phase project includes several room additions and many renovations.

Phase one began in April and includes adding classroom space in both Presho and Kennebec schools, renovating the music and band room, adding central administration office space in Presho, and a new library in Kennebec. Project completion date for phase one is in December 2019.

Phase two of the project, which is set to begin in January of 2020, consists of a new commons area, new kitchen, and auxiliary gym in Presho.

Project completion date will be between Dec. 2020 and Jan. 2021.

This summer the existing library in Presho will be renovated with new carpet, shelving, and maker space areas so students can perform their science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) projects. The process of placing LED lighting throughout classrooms, gymnasiums, and other areas in both Kennebec and Presho is also set to begin this summer. *When The Daily Republic was organizing this special section, Lyman School District planned to have a teacher of the year. Later, the school district decided not to select an educator, instead the section features a major school district building project.

I believe that everyone should be a lifelong learner, and I hope that I inspire my students and coworkers to be curious and persistent. With 26 years of teaching in the elementary in rural South Dakota, I appreciate how well I am able to know my students. After teaching fourth through sixth grade classrooms, I currently have the unique position as the computer and math title teacher throughout elementary which is unbelievingly rewarding as I work within the classrooms, learning and collaborating with my coworkers and interacting with all students in grades kindergarten through sixth grade. Influencing me to be a teacher was my grandma who taught in a one-room schoolhouse, an aunt and an uncle who were each in the education field for over 40 years. Additionally watching my brother struggle with a reading disability reinforced my desire to be a teacher. Times when past and current students share the learning, that I was a part of, which allowed them to achieve academically or when they demonstrate an overall joy of learning are cherished moments.These may be when they share the South Dakota scrapbook produced in fourth grade when I was their classroom teacher, or when I walk into a classroom and they are excited to do math, even if it is word problems, fractions or division. There is not a more welcoming sight as when you see the facial expression on children when they grasp an understanding of a concept and their eyes light up with understanding.

Music has been part of my life literally since birth. My mother played piano, organ and saxophone. Dad played guitar and trumpet. Both sang. Evenings were often spent with my parents, sister and brother singing in the family room.

I was fortunate to also have encouraging music teachers from kindergarten through college. Music is the one true universal language. It combines literature, science, math, history, art and cultures while touching the hearts of all who hear. The thing I enjoy most about teaching is the opportunity to watch my students grow into amazing young adults. I truly love my kids! As a choir director, I get to make a unique connection with my students. To really “make music”, we must be vulnerable in front of hundreds of people. When we share our emotions, we bring those feelings to our audience. The bond these children share through each piece, is one that only they can understand. The power of music is ultimately their strength.
