Google’s newest phone is literally just a piece of paper

By Marie C. Baca The Washington Post You can’t take a selfie on Google’s newest phone. It doesn’t even make calls.

It’s just a piece of paper, printed with a few pieces of information at home and folded into a rectangle. With a few snips of a scissors, it can hold a credit card.

The Paper Phone is part of a new package of “digital well-being experiments” that the company says is aimed at giving users a “digital detox.” It arrived the same week Google launched its latest phone: the $800 Pixel 4, which has built-in radar technology that can be controlled by a user’s hand motions.

Google’s Paper Phone is the latest in a string of offerings attempting

to grab the attention of an audience weary of the ever-expanding presence of tech in our lives, as well as the feeling of being chained to your phone.

Wellness advocates suggest putting your phone in the other room while you sleep. There’s a movement toward “No-Tech Sundays,” when participants abandon their tech for the day. Resorts, startups and wellness gurus are cashing in on the unplugged travel trend with a variety of digital detox events.

There is even a “National Day of Unplugging.”

The Paper Phone project is one of Google’s open-source experiments that also includes a phone wallpaper that counts how

many times a day a user unlocks their device, and a “desert island” program that gives users access only to their most essential apps for 24 hours.

“We hope these experiments inspire developers and designers to keep digital well-being top of mind when building technology,” Google Creative Lab team lead Emma Turpin wrote in a blog post Wednesday.

Is this an Olympics logo or dating app?

By James McAuley PARIS — When Paris unveiled its official logo for the 2024 Summer Olympics, it wasn’t expecting controversy.

But that’s exactly what it got, as the design was widely described as a rehashed version of the flame from the Tinder dating app.

For years, the tentative design was a multicolored Eiffel Tower that ruffled zero feathers. But the official design alludes to one of the most sacred French symbols, Marianne, the personification of the French Republic and its

vaunted ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity.

Busts of Marianne are virtually everywhere here: in town halls, on postage stamps and even on certain euro coins that celebrate France.

But in a country where debating national identity remains something

of a national pastime, there are endless disputes over how to properly represent the de facto goddess of a decidedly secular republic.

The Olympic design was no exception.

“The medal, the flame, Marianne,” the official announcement read, highlighting a design that uses the medal as a face and the Olympic flame as a means of presenting a tousled bob of hair. “Here is the new face of the Olympic and Paralympic Games of #Paris2024.”

French feminists were none too pleased. The

logo, observed Rebecca Amsellem, author of the weekly Les Glorieuses newsletter, resembles “a Japanese manga heroine drawn in a latte.”

On a deeper level, Amsellem wrote, the Olympic logo objectifies women by treating Marianne as an object of sexual desire. “Because of the objectification of which women are victims (even when they are supposed to be a symbol of the Republic), they learn from childhood to internalize the importance of the eyes of others on their faces and on their bodies.”

Others merely rolled their eyes at what seemed to them the latest repetition of the toocool-for-school Parisian cliche.

“The French Olympic logo tumbles out of bed on a Parisian morning,” Paris-based journalist Megan Clement joked in a series of tweets that soon went viral. “She tousles her messy bob, dons Breton stripes and ballet flats and whisks down the stairs from her fifth-floor apartment to grab a baguette before enigmatically texting two men who are pursuing her romantically.”

“The French Olympic logo will never tell you her impeccable skin-

care secrets,” Clement wrote. “The French Olympic logo’s child does not have tantrums.

He eats dinner with her in restaurants at 10 p.m., and the French Olympic logo lets him have some of her wine, of course.”

The design has its defenders, too.

Pierre-Olivier Beckers-Vieujant, chairman of the International Olympic Committee Coordination Commission, told the BBC that the “combination of the gold medal, the Olympic flame and Marianne brings together the values, history and French touch that will make these Olympic Games truly special.”

Bear attacks a circus trainer in Russia, frightening onlookers

By Katie Mettler The Washington Post The trick was called “Clubfoot and Garden Wheelbarrow,” but the bear had other plans.

During a small circus performance this week in the Russian city of Olonets, a trainer stood in the red ring, beckoning a large bear walking

on its hind legs while pushing a wheelbarrow. There was no barrier separating trainer and bear from the intimate crowd surrounding them. Children sat with their parents. People pulled out their cameras to record.

Video shows what happened next: As the

trainer walked past the standing bear, it attacked, pushing the trainer to the ground then climbing on top of him, all before another trainer rushed into the ring and began repeatedly kicking the creature.

“People started to jump up. A panic started.

Everyone grabbed their kids and started running,” eyewitness Galina Guryeva said, according to video obtained by NBC News.

The Interfax news agency reported that authorities have opened a criminal investigation into whether the circus provided unsafe ser-

vices, according to the Associated Press.

Lyudmila Misnik, the manager of the circus, told Russian media that the bear had been spooked by the flash from cellphone cameras, which spectators were told to turn off, reported the New York Times.

Solodyuk told the Daily Storm that the bear, Yashka, is set to retire as a performer.
