Ancestry’s DNA health screening to require a physician’s order

By Kristen V. Brown Bloomberg DNA testing giant Ancestry.com LLC is entering the growing and potentially lucrative field of genetic health screenings with a strategy that’s markedly different from that of its biggest competitor.

Ancestry said Tuesday that its new consumer health tests — an area the genealogy-focused company has been slow to embrace — will require authorization by a physician. Its main competitor, 23andMe Inc., went through the lengthy and expensive process of getting approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration so it can sell its tests directly to customers without a prescription.

The involvement of doctors in Ancestry’s tests places it in the midst of a debate over whether physician-ordered genetic screening is merely a way for companies to avoid the regulatory scrutiny of the FDA. Several other DNA startups, including Color and Veritas, also require a doctor to order health tests.

The FDA hasn’t intervened in the field of physician-ordered

genetic tests, although it has signaled an intent to do so. So far, a doctor’s involvement has been considered enough protection for consumers, even if a patient has little interaction with the physician. It’s unclear whether the entrance of a major player like Ancestry might change that.

“I suspect that FDA is going to eventually do something as these tests begin to enter our world in a big way,” said Robert Cook-Deegan, a professor at the University of Arizona who studies genome ethics and the law.

Ancestry Chief Executive Officer Margo Georgiadis said the company wanted to focus on providing ways for its tests to integrate easily into the care patients receive from their regular doctors.

“That’s really why we chose a path that has a doctor,” she said,”so that the consumer not only can find out a risk factor, but they can seamlessly take a lab report with clinically recommended guidelines into the doctor’s office so that there’s a clear next path for action.”

After ordering a

health DNA test from Ancestry, customers must fill out a brief medical-history survey, which Ancestry then funnels to an outside network of doctors and genetic counselors employed

by PWNHealth LLC to approve the test. Once the results are in, those doctors review them and make sure that patients receive the appropriate educational materials alongside their results. For example, if results show a harmful variant of the BRCA 1 or 2 genes, a customer would receive a video explaining hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome. It’s a model similar to that followed by other genetic-testing companies.

Ancestry’s health tests include free access to a genetic counselor.

And before disclosing potentially troubling results, the company requires consumers to watch educational material about the condition. The reports also include clinical reports that a customer can share with their doctor.

“If you have a finding that’s important, you will have all the tools you need to learn more about it,” said Cath-

erine Ball, Ancestry’s chief scientific officer.

But according to Cook-Deegan, the university professor, most consumers may not understand the limitations of the test.

“A lot of whether this is a good thing or a bad thing depends on the quality of their testing,” he said. “It depends on the degree to which those physicians are really involved and the degree to which the genetic counseling is truly incorporated into the process.”

Companies that offer genetic testing outside of the health-care system should be expected by regulators to show that their tests can successfully be integrated into that system in order to actually improve customers’ health, said Michael Murray, the director of clinical operations at Yale University’s Center for Genomic Health.

“I haven’t seen anything from a company that’s doing this from outside of health care that demonstrates anything,” he said.

Lehi, Utah-based Ancestry entered the genetic-testing market seven years ago, and with more than 15 million kits sold has become the dominant

player in the ancestry DNA testing space.

In its move into health testing, it will introduce two products.

Its less-expensive version, AncestryHealth Core, made its debut Tuesday. For $149, it delivers information about a handful of disease risks and health conditions, including breast cancer, as well as the original ancestry test.

A premium product, AncestryHealth Plus, which will launch early next year. It will decode

the genome in far greater detail. It will cost $199, with a membership fee of $49 for six months of updates.

Georgiadis said the company didn’t plan to seek FDA approval for its tests anytime soon.

“We’re a consumer-centric company,” she said. “And I truly believe that business models drive behavior.

Facebook warns advertisers ‘clear history’ may hurt targeting

By Kurt Wagner Bloomberg Facebook Inc. is close to rolling out a long-awaited privacy feature, but issued a warning to advertisers that improved privacy for users will have at least one key trade-off: Weaker targeting.

Facebook first announced the privacy feature, called “Clear History,” more than a year ago — a response following the Cambridge Analytica data scandal to demonstrate the company’s commitment to protect users’ personal information.

That product, which will allow Facebook users to separate their internet browsing history from their profiles, hasn’t been unveiled, and the company said it has been a more difficult technical challenge to build than expected.

In a blog post Tuesday, Facebook reiterated that Clear History will launch “in the coming months,” and

that advertisers should prepare for the fact that de-coupling browsing data from profiles means the company’s targeting won’t be as strong.

“When someone disconnects their off-Facebook activity, we won’t use the data they clear for targeting” Facebook explained in the blog. “Businesses should keep this in mind when developing strategies for these kinds of campaigns in the second half of the year and beyond” There are still many questions about Clear History, among them how easy it will be for Facebook’s 2 billion users to implement, and as a result, how many people will take advantage of it. Still, the blog post is a rare example of the company acknowledging that a new product could potentially hurt its advertising business.

Facebook makes about 99 percent of its revenue from advertising.

School lunch almost always begins with a “primo” (or first course) of pasta — think penne with tomatoes and ricotta cheese. That’s typically followed by a proteinpacked main dish, such as roasted chicken, accompanied by a veggie side.

Finally, there’s dessert, usually fruit. (If a kid has allergies, or religious or other dietary restrictions, parents can request alternative meals.)

But what if kids would rather eat a homemade sandwich (or “panino”)?

That question became the basis of the “Panino Case,” a legal fight started by a group of parents in the city of Turin who had gotten fed up with the price and quality of school meals. Italy’s top court settled the matter this summer: Families do not have the right to send food to school.

The main problem the judges have with lunch-

boxes is that they can create divisions.

“Students are equal when they eat the same thing,” said Cristina Poncibò, a law professor at the University of Turin — although the mom of three children disagrees with the court’s ruling. She’s unhappy when ingredients aren’t organic and local. (“I don’t want meat coming from Belgium,” she says.)

For parents such as Poncibò, the good news is that individual schools can still choose whether to allow outside food.

Each nation has its own take on how to handle the meaty issue of feeding students.

Bringing food from home is the practice in a lot of places.

In Australia, for example, many schools don’t have a cafeteria. (Although there’s sometimes a canteen to get snacks, such as meat pies.) And, of course, packing a school lunch to take to school is as American as apple pie.

More American kids would be better off with school lunch, however, says Food Research & Action Center’s Crystal FitzSimons, who notes that cafeteria meals are healthier than what an average parent packs.

“Even if there’s pizza, it’s with whole-grain crust, turkey pepperoni and low-fat mozzarella,” she says.

Plus, because students in low-income families qualify for free or reduced-price meals, nearly three-quarters of the lunches eaten at school in 2018 were free or discounted.

“So there can be stigma around who’s participating and who’s not,” FitzSimons says, meaning kids without a lunchbox can feel singled out for being poor.

One way to avoid that problem is providing meals to everyone for free. In Sweden, where students chow down on a hot main dish and their pick of vegetables from a salad bar, no one needs lunch money. A recent study found that

The country with a system most similar to Italy’s is its neighbor, France, where kids are expected to eat their school’s multicourse meals, with almost no exceptions.

“It’s for a healthy diet, but also for cultural aspects and pleasure,” says Florent Vieux, general director of the French research group MS Nutrition.

He appreciates what the fixed menus have taught his son.

“When he doesn’t want carrots for the starter, he doesn’t eat. At the beginning it’s difficult,” he says.

“Then day after day, he eats more carrots because he knows he has no other choice.”

Italian parents aren’t accepting their situation so willingly, according to Poncibò, who is seeing panino pushback. She said she knows of families protesting by refusing to purchase school supplies. “Their reaction is, ‘If we can’t bring food, we won’t bring the other things.’”

No need to panic: 6 ways to handle test stress

By Lorraine Allen The Washington Post With the excitement of the new school year worn off, you might be experiencing something else: stress. Thinking about tests can make your stomach ache or your heart pound. You may remember a previous exam that didn’t go perfectly and worry, “What if I can’t remember the answers?” or “What if I don’t do well?”

The truth is that everyone feels a bit anxious before being tested, be it during a history exam, soccer tryout or musical performance. The key is managing those nerves.

So here are several simple, effective tips from experts to help you control your emotions and do your best: 1. Practice strategically. Having the information and skills you need to succeed is key to managing self-doubt and avoiding failure.

So above all, study well ahead of time. “Practice doing exactly what you’ll have to do on the test,” recommends Eileen Kennedy-Moore, a psychologist and author. For instance, explains Moore in her book “Kid Confidence,” for a math exam, practice doing actual math problems, like those that you’ll be tested on.

like reading through notes or watching your tutor solve problems, won’t prepare you, Moore says. Sleep also helps your brain absorb and retain what you’ve learned, so ideally, review before bedtime — perhaps asking a parent to help.

2. Do the easy parts first. “If you hit a hard question, skip it and come back to it. Doing the easy ones first builds your momentum and confidence — and might remind you of things you’ve forgotten,” Moore says.

3. Block bad thoughts.

“Put your imagination on a leash,” recommends Jane Ehrman, who’s a behavioral health therapist at the Cleveland Clinic.”Deleting” negative selftalk by focusing on your knowledge and abilities, and picturing yourself doing well instead, can help you reach your goals, Ehrman says.

4. Keep calm. This may sound impossible when you’re really nervous, but like anything else, calming down is easy with the proper tools. Oxygen relaxes you and increases brain function, so as soon as you feel panic rising, try this breathe-andrelease technique, suggests Ehrman: Take a long, deep breath, then part your lips and let it all go, exhaling all your

tension and worries out of your body. Repeat for four breaths, three or four times a day. After a couple of weeks, deep breathing daily can “rewire” your brain to be calmer. You’ll find that when faced with new challenges, you’ll automatically breathe-andrelease any stress before it’s overwhelming.

5. Take care. Practice healthy habits in general, but especially in the week leading up to a test, Ehrman says. This means getting exercise, going to bed early and fueling your body and brain with healthy food — not junk food — to be at your best.

Stay focused.

Because you can think about only one thing at a time, you can replace any negative thoughts with a positive statement, such as, “I know how to do this!” When you feel fear or doubt creeping up, take four long breaths while repeating your statement. In just a minute, you’ll be calmer and ready to tackle what’s ahead.

And remember that if you feel overwhelmed or want help managing difficult emotions or challenges, always reach out to your family, friends, guidance counselors or others you trust. Having support can help make any difficult situation more bearable.

Qantas sets record for ultralong trip

By Brittany Shammas The Washington Post A Qantas airplane took off from New York on Friday night and didn’t stop until it reached Sydney just over 19 hours later, setting a record for the world’s longest nonstop commercial passenger flight.

Months of planning went into the Boeing 787-9′s 10,066mile journey. Tests assessed the health and well-being of the 49 passengers and crew members aboard the flight, which was conducted for research purposes as the largest airline in Australia explores offering the “ultra long” flights.

“This is a really significant first for aviation,” Qantas Group chief executive Alan Joyce said in a news release.

“Hopefully, it’s a preview of a regular service that will speed up how people travel from one side of

the globe to the other.”

The company is seeking to launch nonstop flights between Australia’s east coast and New York and London, saving passengers up to four hours in travel time. Its Project Sunrise plans to test the London-to-Sydney route in November and decide by the end of this year whether to offer the new routes.

For the New York-toSydney test, the passenger and baggage load was restricted to control the weight on the plane. Medical researchers and scientists worked with Qantas to make adjustments to cabin lighting, and inflight meals were adjusted to reduce jet lag.

Rather than starting with dinner and then lights off, as night flights typically operate, the research flight began with lunch and the lights were kept on for six hours to mirror the destination’s time

of day.

Overall, the ultralong journey went “really smoothly,” said Qantas Capt. Sean Golding, who led the four pilots operating the service.

They were happy with the trip, he said.

“We had a lot of interest from air traffic controllers as we crossed through different airspace because of the uniqueness of this flight,” Golding said.

“We also had a special sign-off and welcome home from the control towers in New York and Sydney, which you don’t get every day.”

The longest nonstop commercial flight that is offered is Singapore Airlines’ 18-hour-and45-minute route from Singapore to Newark, which debuted last year.

The route uses an Airbus plane designed for ultralong-range travel, with features such as larger windows, higher ceilings and an extrawide body.

Walter White saved Jesse Pinkman, but Netflix might have saved both of them

By Travis DeShong The Washington Post “El Camino” arrived Friday on Netflix, picking up where “Breaking Bad” left off: with a bruised and abused Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) escaping a meth compound run by neo-Nazis, exhilarated and uncertain as he speeds off in a Chevrolet El Camino. The neo-Nazis are dead.

Walter White is dead.

Jesse has survived.

“Breaking Bad” almost died, long before it carried us to this moment. Backstage at the 2013 Emmys (where the show won for best drama), creator Vince Gilligan said that a show like “Breaking Bad” might have been nixed before its time had it not been for streaming video services that allow new fans to catch up while a show is still on the air. The show survived, he suggested, because

of Netflix.

“I think Netflix kept us on the air,”” Gilligan said at the time.

“It’s a new era in television, and we’ve been very fortunate to reap the benefits.”

“Breaking Bad,” which ended after five seasons and reportedly wrapped up on Gilligan’s terms, is so renowned now that it’s hard to fathom a time when it was at risk of cancellation.

(On its ranking of the best 100 TV shows of all time, Rolling Stone ranked “Breaking Bad” at No. 3.) But the show, which aired on AMC, did not always have such firm control of its fate. The show reportedly never cracked 2 million viewers in its first three seasons. But Sunday on AMC was not the only time and place where people would end up watching “Breaking Bad.” In 2011, Netflix added the first three

seasons of the show to its streaming service.

Suddenly, a new group of binge-viewers had access to the show and an opportunity to catch up on the seasons they’d missed. The show’s existing fans had a way to nurture their obsession. When the show came back for its fourth season, 2.6 million people reportedly tuned in to AMC. Rinse, repeat. The premiere of Season 5 (which aired in two halves over two years) drew 2.93 million viewers; the premiere of the second half of that season spiked to 5.92 million. By the time Jesse Pinkman sped away to freedom, more than 10 million people were watching.

For viewers who first fell in love with “Breaking Bad” on not Sunday nights but lost Saturday afternoons, the fact that “El Camino” has come to Netflix feels less like a

premiere than a homecoming.

Netflix has been a boon for other series over the years. After CW’s “Riverdale” spent a summer on Netflix, it started its sophomore season with record ratings.

When Netflix added the first two seasons of “Schitt’s Creek,” which airs on Pop TV in the United States, the show’s ratings and mentions on Netflix’s social media feeds took off. “You” started off as a little-watched psychological thriller on Lifetime. Once Netflix got it, it became a hit. Now, it’s a Netflix Original title.

Netflix’s cultural grip never overshadowed “Breaking Bad” since the show became iconic in its own right.

ties Ministry announced that archaeologists had found 30 workshops for the manufacturing and processing of funeral furniture for the tombs of kings in the Valley of the Kings, which served as the primary burial site for pharaohs from the 18th to the 20th dynasty.

Researchers found a kiln for producing pottery and metal, where items such as silver rings and gold foil were also uncovered.

The workshops, dated from 1539 B.C. to 1292 B.C., CNN reported.

The discovery of the workshops opened up a new way to understand the tools and techniques used for making royal coffins and tomb furniture, an archaeologist told CNN. The site also gave researchers another way to understand what daily life might have been like for laborers at the workshops.

An archaeological mission has been underway in the Valley of the Kings since December 2017, according to the Antiquities Ministry.

There’s a plan to search for the tombs of Queen Nefertiti and her daughter, who was King Tutankhamen’s widow. Researchers are also searching for the burial sites of three major pharaohs — Ramses VIII, King Thut= mose II and King Amenhotep — in addition to finding tombs for queens in the Valley of the Queens.

By Lateshia Beachum The Washington Post The Egyptian government is hailing the discovery of more than 20 wooden coffins as “one of the largest and most important” archaeological finds in the past few years.

The coffins were found in Assasif, a necropolis on the west bank of the Nile River.

Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities tweeted images of the “intact and sealed coffins” Tuesday.

The sarcophagi, which were stacked in two layers in a large tomb, still boasted their original carvings of faces and hands and colors of red, green, white and black that have not faded much over time.

The Antiquities Ministry tweeted images of the coffins on Tuesday.

Egyptian officials have not given the time frame from which the coffins date, but the site where they were found was once part of the ancient city of Thebes.

Thebes was the royal capital of the ancient Egypt. Early monuments can be traced as far back as the 11th dynasty, which occurred between 2081 and 1939 B.C. Authorities said more details about the coffins would be divulged in a news conference at a later date.

Juul suspends sale of most of e-cigarette flavors in US

By Ellen Huet Bloomberg Juul Labs Inc., the largest e-cigarette maker in the U.S., is suspending sales of most nicotine pod flavors nationwide, bending to pressure from regulators and the public.

Fruit and dessert flavors, which the company was selling to adults over 21 through its website, will no longer be available pending a review by the Food and Drug Administration,

Juul said. It will continue selling mint, menthol and tobacco flavor pods in stores and online.

The sales restriction comes out of a review of the company’s practices and policies led by its new chief executive officer, K.C. Crosthwaite, who joined Juul last month from tobacco giant Altria Group Inc., the company said Thursday. As part of that review, the company said last month it would stop all U.S. advertising,

Juul’s sales ban begins Thursday and affects

The company already stopped the distribution of those flavors last November for retailers in the U.S., a move it made in anticipation of sales restrictions from the FDA on flavored e-cigarette products.

Raffles Hotel reopens after renovation

By Joanna Ossinger The Washington Post An icon of Singapore’s history has been restored and is now open again.

The Raffles Hotel, which first opened in 1887 and was declared a National Monument by the government a century later, reopened today after an extensive renovation that started two and a half years ago, according to a statement from the hotel.

The Raffles, known for its Long Bar where the Singapore Sling cocktail was invented and peanut shells tossed on the floor, now offers 115 suites in nine categories including Grand Hotel Suites and Presidential Suites.

The Long Bar has been refreshed and will still sling its reddish-pink gin-based drink.

“The newly restored Raffles will provide an experience like no other,” said Christian Westbeld, the hotel’s general manager.

“There are few hotels in the world whose names have become virtually synonymous with the cities in which they are located — and none more so than the Raffles

Hotel in Singapore.”

A search on the hotel’s website for an upcoming Saturday night showed prices starting at S$869 ($632) a night for one guest in the hotel’s cheapest suite option. At the higher end, a two-bed President Suite for one night in October was going for $11,899 ($8,650).

The newly restored hotel also features restaurant collaborations with Chef Anne-Sophie Pic, of the three-Michelin star Maison Pic in Valence, France; French Master Chef Alain Ducasse; and Chef Jereme Leung, who is known for his innovative Chinese cooking.

The restoration, led by acclaimed interior designer Alexandra Champalimaud, was also supported by Aedas, a leading global architecture and design firm.

Raffles Hotel Singapore is the flagship property of Raffles Hotels & Resorts, a part of French hospitality firm Accor SA. The hotel itself is owned by Qatar-based Katara Hospitality, a global hotel owner, developer and operator based in Qatar.

80-year-old sit-in charges dismissed

By Patricia Sullivan The Washington Post Five young African American men sat reading at separate tables in Alexandria, Virginia’s new whites-only library on Queen Street. They had just been refused library cards; in 1939, that was a privilege barred to black citizens.

But the demonstration caused an uproar. Within minutes, the police arrived to find about 300 counter-protestors and press outside the building. After some consultation, police arrested the five men on charges of disorderly conduct.

Those charges have finally been dismissed, after lingering unresolved for 80 years.

City leaders will present copies of a judge’s order Monday night to the descendants of those demonstrators during a public meeting at the Charles E. Beatley Jr. Central Library.

“They didn’t do anything disorderly other than sit and read a book,” said Alexandria’s Commonwealth Attorney Bryan Porter, who sought the dismissal of the charges

at the suggestion of Mayor Justin Wilson, D. “Obviously it’s a symbolic gesture, but it’s a very, very opportune and appropriate gesture.”

Circuit Court Chief Judge Lisa Bondareff Kemler agreed. She signed an order Friday that said William Evans, Edward Gaddis, Morris Murray, Clarence Strange and Otto Tucker were “lawfully exercising their constitutional rights to free assembly, speech and to petition the government to alter the established policy of sanctioned segregation at the time of their arrest,” and that “sitting peacefully in a library reading books . . . was not in any fashion disorderly or likely to cause acts of violence.”

No laws had been broken and no criminal charges should have been filed, according to the judge’s order, which also cited U.S. Supreme Court and Virginia court decisions that overturned the “separate but equal” policies of the time.

Porter said the judge, whose identity is lost to history, never adjudicated the case, which means the men were never declared innocent or guilty. That meant the charges were still technically outstanding.

All the official records of the case have been destroyed over the years, Porter said.

After the sit-in, Alexandria, Virginia, rushed to open the Robert Robinson Library for the city’s African American residents in 1940. The building is now home to the Black History Museum.

The dismissal of the charges comes as Alexandria’s libraries are completing their commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the sitin. A panel discussion and unveiling of commemorative posters are planned Monday night starting at 6:30 p.m.

Any Alexandria resident who seeks a library card can apply for one before, during or after Monday’s ceremony, a library official said.

Black History Museum had an exhibition about it in 2009 and 2014, and The Washington Post wrote about the group’s attorney, Samuel Tucker, in 2000.

The Commonwealth of Virginia erected a historical marker about the sit-in along North Washington Street, around the corner from the library, in 2008.

It all began when Tucker, annoyed that black residents were not allowed to use the then-new Alexandria Free Library — now the Kate Waller Barrett Branch Library — orchestrated and meticulously planned the demonstration for Aug. 21, 1939. Although 11 men had volunteered themselves to be arrested, only five showed up on the morning of the demonstration.

Particularly after they reach more than 100,000 followers, influencers need to “really be aware of identifiable markers of where they are” in their postings, Karwowski said.

While celebrities and public figures long faced security concerns because of obsessed fans, stalking has become easier with access to a wealth of digital information from targets gleaned from the Internet. Social media posts can also help disclose their location, even if the post isn’t tagged to a particular area.

The alleged stalker’s use of Google Maps to pinpoint Matsuoka’s location reflects other criticism of the company’s Street View feature, which provides stereoscopic, ground-level images of neighborhoods around the globe.

It has triggered privacy concerns in countries such as India, where officials have rejected Google’s proposals to

expand its service. In the United States, the company blurs license plates and faces, but many other details — from dogs to graffiti — are visible.

Google declined to comment. Tokyo police did not respond to a request for comment.

Crystal Justice, chief

marketing and development officer for the National Domestic Violence Hotline, said the Matsuoka case is a variation on the social media-focused “digital abuse” the organization has seen increase exponentially since 2012.

Victims of this type of abuse commonly

report that their abuser employs social media to monitor and harass them.

“The technology itself isn’t the issue,” Justice said. “But when we design technology, we have to consider all the users, even those that have the most awful of intentions.”

When it comes to sensitive information, the eyes have it.

That became apparent last week, when a man allegedly stalked a Japanese pop star after determining her location based on reflections seen in her eyes in social media posts, according to the Associated Press. Those images helped the suspect find her train station.

He then used Google Street View and other details shared from where she lives to find her home.

The incident raises serious questions about privacy in the age of ubiquitous high-resolution images and social media. Today, the average smartphone user can create incredibly detailed photos and share them with millions of people at the click of a button. The same process can also expose personal information few selfie-takers realize they are revealing.

“As the ways in which you can use social media for investigative work become more widely known, I expect we’ll see more incidents like this,” said Eliot Higgins, founder of the investigative site Bellingcat and one of the pioneers of open-source and social media-based investigative techniques.

Posting every moment of life on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and other social media sites has become an everyday part of life, particularly for influencers and stars who market their lifestyles as a brand. At the same time, phone cameras are locked in a technology arms race, adding more and more detail to selfies and other pictures they take.

Apple’s newly released iPhone 11 Pro models have three camera lenses each and will soon include a software update that uses artificial intelligence to clarify details further.

Samsung’s Galaxy A9 has four lenses, and the Huawei P30 Pro uses a combination of hardware and software to create up to 50x zoom.

That level of detail combined with frequent postings and celebrity can prove troublesome, as it did for Japanese pop star Ena Matsuoka, whom the alleged stalker targeted. She said in a statement last month that she will return to performing live after taking some time off — and that she will post on social media in the meantime as much as possible.
