She said Wagoner broke down crying at his desk. Parton recalled him saying, “That’s the best thing you ever wrote. OK, you can go. But only if I can produce that record.”

Of course, that worked out well for everyone involved. “She wrote it, I think, because he had done so much for her,” famed Nashville radio host Ralph Emery said. “But she felt if she didn’t leave him, she would just remain ‘Porter’s girl singer.’”

That quote was a haunting transition to the next scene in the documentary, which featured Parton’s 1974 performance at the Grand Ole Opry. She wore a glorious purple pantsuit, blond hair teased high. In that moment, Parton’s pitch-perfect rendition proved just how far she could get on her own, as she sang the simple yet devastating words to what would become one of the top-selling songs in history: “And I will always love you.”

Naturally, it was waterworks time for the preview screening audience. “Everybody here has probably heard Whitney Houston’s version ... it raises the hair on the back of your neck,” Burns said during a post-show Q&A. “But I think the combination of story and Dolly singing it, elevates it — without taking anything away from Whitney — into an even higher place.”

Even though he knew that this project would result in meaningful moments, he added, the emotional impact of such stories still took him by surprise.

“I knew we would get into that sort of thing, but I didn’t realize the potency,” Burns said. “It was like, you thought you were going to have beer, and it was hard liquor. It really knocked us for a loop.”

By Emily Yahr The Washington Post Ken Burns’ new eight-part PBS documentary series, “Country Music,” isn’t just a fascinating, in-depth look into the history and impact of the genre — it’s also a sobfest.

During a recent preview screening at George Washington University, you could hear the sniffles in the crowd during certain particularly tragic songs or emotional anecdotes.

One scene in particular, which aired in the seventh installment on Tuesday night, stood out: Dolly Parton told the story behind “I Will Always Love You,” the popular ballad she wrote in 1973 and was made even more famous

by Whitney Houston in “The Bodyguard” two decades later. Some fans probably already know the history — but hearing Parton personally share the details, interwoven with scenes of her belting out the song at the Grand Ole Opry, made it especially powerful.

It all started in 1973, when Parton was about seven years into a performer gig on country singer Porter Wagoner’s syndicated TV show. The documentary narrator explained Wagoner and Parton were close, and he encouraged her to write her own songs; but he also maintained “tight control” over their partnership, especially financially. When Parton’s career took off, and his faded, he didn’t take it well. They started to fight constantly.

“It was his show, I wasn’t trying to hog it. I just kind of carved out a little place for myself,” Parton explained.

She knew she had to leave, but Wagoner wouldn’t hear of it and threatened to sue.

Finally, Parton said, she walked into his office one day and said, “Porter, sit down. I’ve got something I have to sing to you.”

French chef sues over losing Michelin star

By Kim Bellware The Washington Post A high-stakes food drama playing out in the French Alps might all boil down to the cheddar.

Renowned French chef Marc Veyrat on Tuesday announced he had sued the Francebased Michelin Guide after the restaurant guidebook authority demoted his La Maison des Bois in Manigod, France, from three stars to two earlier this year. Veyrat claimed Michelin’s reviewer wrongly determined a cheese souffle as having cheddar in it; Veyrat said the color was from saffron used in the dish and is now seeking documenta-

tion from Michelin to explain their decision.

“They dared to say that we put cheddar in our souffle of reblochon, beaufort, and tomme,” Veyrat told French magazine Le Point in July. “They have insulted our region; my employees were furious.”

A court hearing is set for Nov. 27 in Nanterre, Agence France-Presse reports.

Veyrat’s restaurant, roughly 100 miles east of Lyon, was first awarded the coveted three-star Michelin ranking in 2018. Much of the food in the $330 to $430 tasting menu comes from the restaurant’s own botanic gardens and orchards.

The famed chef learned in January that his restaurant was losing a star just one year after it had achieved the three-star ranking — widely considered among the most prestigious distinctions in the fine dining business.

“I’ve been in a depression for six months.

How dare you take hostage the health of cooks?” Veyrat lamented during his July interview with Le Point, during which he blamed the “amateur” nature of the Michelin reviewers.

“It scares me for the new generations to come. In fact, the only reason given was confusion over the Reblo-

chon and Beaufort emulsion with cheddar,” he said. He went on to call the Michelin reviewers “impostors” who deliberately stir up fights for “commercial reasons.”

Among Veyrat’s grievances is his belief that reviewers — in violation of Michelin’s own stated best practices — did not visit the restaurant multiple times. He’s demanding receipts from Michelin to prove their independent, anonymous reviewers in fact dined at Le Maison des Bois more than once.

The receipts are among the records Veyrat’s lawsuit is hoping to compel from Michelin, his lawyer Emmanuel Ravanas told Agence France-Presse Tuesday.

In a statement, Michelin spokesman Jérôme Bourret said,

“We understand the disappointment of Mr Veyrat, whose talent no one [contests], even if we regret his unreasonable persistence with his accusations.

Our first duty is to tell consumers why we have changed our recommendation. We will carefully study his demands and respond calmly.”

Ravanas said, “For decades, Veyrat has been used to having his cooking graded, evaluated and compared, and he knows quite well that you don’t own a star for life. He accepts it all, as long as the criticism is accurate.”

between one and three stars. While even one star is an honor, a three-star designation can be the pinnacle of a chef’s career. It’s an exclusive group: There are just 27 three-star restaurants in France and fewer than 140 in the whole world.

The pressure on chefs to achieve and then maintain Michelin star and other haute cuisine status can be intense.

When award-winning French chef Bernard Loiseau killed himself in 2003, those close to him speculated that one factor was his fear over losing a Michelin star after being downgraded by another rating authority.

But for as much as chefs covet Michelin stars, some have started to reject the recognition. Veyrat tried to “give back” his rating after he was downgraded this year (Michelin said it would still list his restaurant, though they can’t force chefs to acknowledge the honor).

Crackdown on resort fees expected

By Hannah Sampson The Washington Post Already the subject of lawsuits and consumer ire, resort fees are now the target of a new federal bipartisan bill. The Hotel Advertising Transparency Act of 2019 seeks to do away with the practice of tacking on extra charges that aren’t shown in the upfront room rate for hotels.

Reps. Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Texas, and Jeff Fortenberry, R-Neb., filed the legislation last week. It would require any mandatory fees, aside from taxes, to be shown in the price of a hotel room that is advertised to consumers. According to a news release, the proposed law would also apply to “other places of short-term lodging,” which includes hotels or other accommodations that advertise a nightly, hourly or weekly rate.

“When travelers search for hotel options, they deserve to see straightforward prices”Fortenberry said in a statement.

“They should not get hit with hidden fees that are designed to confuse consumers and distort the actual price.

I am pleased to support this legislation that will result in greater transparency for the traveling public.”

There is no companion bill in the Senate yet, but efforts are underway to get similar legislation filed.

The bill has the support of consumer-advocacy groups including Travelers United and Consumer Reports.

“I believe that this bill will pass,” Lauren Wolfe, a lawyer with Travelers United who founded the site Kill Resort Fees, said in an email. “People want to know the price of a room — it is as simple as that. American con-

sumers should be able to know the price of a good before they buy it. The hotels here have shown that they cannot act by themselves. It is time for Congress to step in.”

This isn’t the first time federal legislation has taken aim at the pricing practice: a 2016 attempt in the Senate failed to gain traction.

More recently, states have taken on the issue, with attorneys general from all 50 states and the District of Columbia investigating resort fees. In July, the Nebraska and Washington, D.C., attorneys general filed lawsuits against Hilton and Marriott International, respectively, accusing the companies of deceptive and misleading pricing practices.

And operators got a warning years ago when the Federal Trade Commission sent notices in 2012 and 2013 telling 35 hotels

“In response to these warning letters, many hotels and online travel agents modified their resort fee disclosures,” according to the announcement from the Congress members.”But consumer complaints about the disclosure of these rates continue.”

In a statement, Brian Crawford, the executive vice president of government affairs for the American Hotel &

Lodging Association, defended hotel practices. The group has not taken a stance on the proposed legislation.

“When resort fees are applied, they are clearly and prominently displayed by hotel websites prior to the end of the booking process, in accordance with guidance issued by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission,” he said. “We believe that all online lodging advertisers, including third-party online travel agencies and short-term rental platforms, should be held to the same

standards of transparency.”

Chip and Joanna Gaines open hotel in Texas

Compton The Washington Post Chip and Joanna Gaines, who soared to fame on HGTV, announced their next steps to help transform Waco, Texas, into a tourist destination: the 2021 opening of their own boutique hotel. The couple, best known for their home design and renovation show “Fixer Upper,” shared the news through Joanna’s blog and the couple’s various social media accounts.

The couple’s “dream” for the hotel, Joanna wrote in a blog post, is for it to serve as “an extension of the way we feel about our own home and all it represents to us, and that every guest who comes to stay would experience that same sense of belonging and community.”

The hotel will be located in downtown Waco, near the couple’s other projects, such as the Magnolia Market shopping complex. Housed in a historical building that sprawls nearly 53,000 square feet, it will be a collaboration between the couple and Adventurous Journeys Capital Partners, the private real estate company from Chicago behind such notable properties as Soho House Chica-

go and the Chicago Athletic Association.

The hotel will be the first of its kind in the Central Texas city, although offerings are growing there. The couple already offers accommodation options dubbed “Magnolia Stays” for fans. The vacation rentals include the Carriage House, a three-bedroom fixer-upper that sleeps six with a weekday rate of $545; the Hillcrest Estate, a historical renovation that sleeps 12 with a weekday rate of $995; and the Magnolia House, a property in the town of McGregor that sleeps eight with a weekday rate of $795.

Waco’s rise in popularity can at least partly be attributed to the couple’s influence.

After the Waco-based “Fixer Upper” started airing in 2013, and after the couple opened Magnolia Market in 2015, the city noticed upticks in tourism. (The couple ended the show after five seasons, but HGTV still airs reruns.)

“In the last couple years, we get 20,000 to 30,000 people a week simply to discover the ‘Fixer Upper’ effect on Waco,” said Todd Bertka, the director of the Waco Convention and Visitors Bureau.

By Gene Park The Washington Post It surprised no one, but Sony’s official announcement of the PlayStation 5 has extended the millennial video game console war for another generation, and it could be the last.

Speaking exclusively with Wired magazine, Sony confirmed the PlayStation 5 will be released before the holidays in 2020, and will support ray-tracing technology — a Hollywood-level, next-generation technique that makes games appear more realistic — as a hardware feature within its graphics processing unit.

The console will also have a solid-state drive, which promises faster load times and read speeds for data, a new CPU that should help consoles keep pace with higher-end PC rigs and 8K resolutions.

The console will compete with Microsoft’s yet-tobe-officially-named console, still dubbed Project Scarlett, as well as Nintendo’s Switch handheldhybrid machine.

Both behemoths will arrive before the holidays next year in what many industry observers surmise might be the last generation of consoles, thanks to

In addition to developing the hotel, the Gaineses are busy expanding Magnolia Market and building a coffee shop and furniture showroom while maintaining their other businesses. Despite that hectic schedule, the couple can be spotted around town from time to time.

“They’e around and not invisible, but their schedule has them very busy, as you can imagine,” Bertka said.

“They recently attended a city council meeting in support of a project they’re passionate about.”

Bertka hopes that the couple’s projects, as well as the city’s own independent developments, will keep stoking Waco’s tourism momentum.

“Their continued efforts here in Waco to show passion and interest in the town that they’re from is a continual boost in the tourism world,” Bertka said. “These things will continue to keep us on the map and in the minds of folks who want to travel and discover Waco as a destination.”

Gone will be the “rumble” vibration technology, fully replaced by haptic feedback, the broad spectrum of vibration types you would find in more recent iPhones. Haptic technology was introduced with PlayStation 3’s controllers.

The Wired reporter tried a prototype of the controller, playing through the virtual reality game “Astro Bot Rescue Mission.” The game features many surface types for the Astro Bot to run over, and the reporter said the controller’s vibrations gave “distinct-and surprisingly immersive-tactile experiences,” like mud feeling slow and soggy.

For the last six years, Sony held the pole position for video game consoles.

PlayStation 4 sold 100 million consoles worldwide by June, making it the fastest to reach that milestone.

Even so, it’s difficult to imagine a greater gift to “Saturday Night Live,” a show with

record-breaking ratings that can be directly tied to its ongoing satirical targeting of Trump.

Naturally, the show wasted no time in commenting on the impeachment inquiry, kicking off the Season 45 premiere with a cold open that followed squarely in the footsteps of nearly every cold open we’ve seen since Trump became president. Alec

Baldwin returned yet again with his Trump impersonation, despite yet again saying he was finished playing the role. The sketch opens with him sitting in the Oval Office, worrying about the impeachment news and calling every ally he can think of.

So “SNL” played a sort of mad libs, cycling through many of its more frequent characters. Baldwin’s Trump calls Kate McKinnon’s Rudy Giuliani, Aidy Bryant’s Attorney General William Barr, Beck Bennett’s Vice President Mike Pence, Mikey Day and Alex Moffat’s Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, Cecily Strong’s Jeanine Pirro, Chris Redd’s Kanye West and Kenan Thompson’s Don King. Most randomly, the sketch ended with “SNL’s” Trump calling Liev Schreiber, who portrayed himself (but who “SNL’s” Trump thought was his titular character from Showtime’s “Ray Donovan”).

The easy highlight of the sketch was new cast member Bowen Yang bringing back his Kim

Jong Un impression, offering the president advice:”You have a big ocean in your country?

Send whistleblower to the bottom of there.”(“I wish my country was as cool as your country,” Baldwin’s Trump replies.)

Otherwise, the jokes were mostly familiar.

McKinnon’s Giuliani doesn’t seem to know anything is wrong.

“Nobody’s gonna find out about our illegal side dealings with the Ukraine. Or how we tried to cover up those side dealings. Or how we planned to cover up the cover up,” Giuliani says, though unbeknown to the president, he’s on CNN. In a subsequent call, he’s on Joe Rogan’s podcast Bryant’s Barr asks, “Where are you going to find a sacrificial patsy that’ll do anything you say? Not it.”

The show’s Trump chooses Pence as said patsy, though he tries buttering his VP up first by making small talk about church. “Still waiting on whatshisface to come back?” “SNL’s”

Trump’s final call goes to an extremely confused Schreiber, who has to explain that Ray Donovan is a character.

And that John Wick is also a character. They decide if Trump needs someone to fix his problems, he might do better calling Liam Neeson.

The impeachment news broke late in the week, meaning the show’s writers were likely scrambling to put together the cold open at the last minute. Still, nothing about it was surprising, aside from Schreiber’s appearance, signaling that we’re in for more business as usual this season. That may disappoint some viewers, but considering how well the show’s been doing, both in ratings and at the Emmys, that should suit most fans just fine — though it might spark a tweet or two from the president.

Two-thumbed mobile typists generated an average of about 38 words per minute, according to what researchers describe as the largest experiment to date on mobile typing. That’s still a quarter less than the 51.56 word-per-minute average in physical keyboard users, but the gap isn’t as big as expected, researchers said, adding that they were “amaze” by the results.

Mobile typists who use auto-correct are faster than those who use word-prediction tools, according to a study that looked at 37,000 volunteers tested by researchers at Finland’s Aalto Uni-

versity, the University of Cambridge and ETH Zürich.

Many children grow up with some kind of school training to learn how to type — 10 fingers on the keyboard, index fingers on the F and J keys, looking at the paper or the screen instead of the keys.

Earlier devices such as the BlackBerry promoted typing on miniature keyboards, too.

Now, most smartphone users type on their devices with one or two thumbs. Some also type with a single index finger.

As the smartphone has claimed a bigger and bigger portion of our communications, many educators and researchers have posed questions about the longer-term effects the move to typing on a digital keyboard may have — particularly on younger generations.

The better-than-ex-

pected results surprised researchers, because typing on a smartphone “is a type of motor skill that people learn on their own with no formal training, which is very unlike typing on physical keyboards,” study co-author Antti Oulasvirta said in a news release.

In fact, 10to 19-year-olds type about 10 wpm faster than people in their 40s do, regardless of whether the keyboard was on a smartphone or a computer. The best typists could do more than 80 wpm.

The study’s authors predict that the typing gap may close at some point as the population becomes less skilled with physical keyboards and as mobile typing technology improves.

Still, there are some trade-offs when it comes to typing on a smartphone.

Those

participating in the study left more errors uncorrected, something that also resulted in less backspacing.

“A possible explanation is the higher interaction cost of correcting mistakes on mobile devices and the limited text editing methods,” according to the researchers.

The researchers collected the typing data from thousands of individuals using an online typing test. The test asked participants to transcribe a series of sentences, and recorded their keystrokes, errors, speed and other metrics. It also asked them to self-report their demographic data, as well as information about how they type and the sort of keyboard they used to complete the test.
