Castor oil staging a cosmetics comeback

By Elizabeth Kiefer The Washington Post Castor oil has been around for thousands of years and has been a medicine-cabinet staple for hundreds. So it’s somewhat surprising to see the standby elixir — known for calming stomachs and beautifying hair — gaining attention from the wellness and beauty industries that are churning out products claiming to grow your eyelashes or make your skin glow.

Domesticated in Eastern Africa and introduced to China from India an estimated 1,400 years ago, the castor oil plant is one of the oldest cultivated crops in human histo-

ry. Castor oil allegedly was a weapon in Cleopatra’s beauty arsenal — the Queen of the Nile is said to have used it in her hair and, some sources say, to brighten the whites of her eyes.

Read on to find out why castor oil is having its 15 minutes of fame, whether you can believe the hype, what to look for and how to use it.

What is castor oil?

Castor oil is made by pressing the seeds of castor beans, which yields a viscous liquid thicker than olive oil and pale yellow in hue.

Known for being full of triglycerides and fatty acids, castor oil contains a high volume of

ricinoleic acid, a versatile component that makes it well-suited to a wide range of formulas — industrial, medical and pharmaceutical alike. Castor oil’s benefits are myriad: as a moisturizer and anti-inflammatory, as well as a hair thickener and strengthener.

“Basically, companies are calling out natural ingredients right now

because that is what consumers are looking for,” Russak said. Castor oil “has longevity. It’s not a chemical product that has just been designed in the lab.”

Promoting castor oil in a way that dovetails with wider wellness trends seems to be working, if you consider celebrity endorsements and what’s stocked at Sephora.

Actress Charlize Theron recently touted castor oil as a personal beauty tip, saying she uses it by itself on her eyebrows and hair. Grande Cosmetics retails a castor oil mascara that promises “unbeatable shine and glossiness” for $25, while Biolage makes a hair mask treatment that uses castor oil as

a key ingredient, and WUNDER2’s Wunderkiss Lip Combo features the oil in its lip plumping gloss.

A two-ounce bottle of “revitalizing hair oil” from Brooklynbased company May 11, which contains four “pure oils” including Jamaican Black Castor Oil, can be purchased online for $78 as “an accompaniment to a multifaceted lifestyle, sublimely enhancing moments of simple pleasure or active engagement.”

What about those beauty claims?

Advertising claims aside, at least one study has shown that castor

Gandhi remembers her mother using castor oil on her hair when she was a child, as well as giving it to her orally for constipation.

When she had her own daughter last year, she reached for it, too.

“Topically, you’re getting anti-inflammatory properties,” Gandhi said, which is why castor oil is an ingredient in products such as anti-aging and stretch mark creams and ointments for sunburns and rashes. Castor oil also can be used as an antibacterial and antifungal treatment to combat yeast overgrowth and buildup on the scalp.

At the same time, she cautioned, a little

oil increases hair luster — more commonly understood as shine — overall, according to Bindiya Gandhi, a physician who practices functional and integrative medicine in Georgia. Though there are no studies that show castor oil directly causes hair growth, Gandhi said, the theory isn’t farfetched. “Hair growth is triggered by prostaglandin (PGE2) and ricinoleic acid in castor oil has been shown to stimulate PGE2 so we can conclude that this is the reason that it increases hair growth,” she wrote in an email.

She gives the example of Latisse, an eyelash growth product that uses the “same mech-

bit of castor oil goes a long way — and it’s not right for everyone or everything.

Ingested orally, it can help with digestive issues; but take too much and it can cause an electrolyte imbalance or diarrhea. “Always talk to your doctor to make sure you have the go-ahead,” said Gandhi, who advised that adults ingest between 15 milliliters and three teaspoons for constipation but not use it as a long-term solution. “You can mix it in fruit juice, milk, or water to help ease the taste.” For kids, the dosage depends on age, and you should talk to a pediatrician first, “but 5 milliliters or 1 teaspoon is usually a good starting dose.”

For topical applications, Gandhi recommended using a dimesize amount to massage into the skin or scalp.

But, she warned, castor oil should not be considered a fix for all skin issues. For example, people experiencing seborrheic dermatitis — caused by a fungus and resulting in red, flaky skin — should avoid castor oil, which exacerbates the condition.

Gandhi advised anyone shopping for castor oil to scrutinize the source and\ packaging: Look for cold-pressed products, the lighter in color the better, which she says tends to be a reflection of purity. The consistency should be thick and syrupy. “You probably want to get it

in a glass bottle,” she added. “If something is in plastic, it’s more likely to get rancid or leach.”

Russak suggested consumers pay attention to actual processing whenever possible.

“Castor oil comes from the beans of a natural plant, but where do the beans come from, how are they stored? Are they covered in pesticides to protect them from bacteria and mold — and are those pesticides being processed together with the beans to produce the oil?” she asked. Research is key to finding a high-quality product.

Both doctors also pointed out that just because something is natural, doesn’t mean it’s good for you — and that “all natural” is not always better or more effective than scientifically formulated products.

Though there’s no reason to turn our backs on products that have been in use and worked well for ages, such as castor oil, Russak said: “We do have a lot of ingredients that we know work. I don’t want my patients to just completely put aside everything that science has created up until now and jump into everything that is organic and natural. She cites retinol and retinoic acid, which were developed as anti-aging ingredients in the late 20th century. “The original form of retinoic acid is Vitamin A,” she says. “So, let’s not forget that.”

The family-owned ranch in a historic mining area east of Sacramento, Calif., which for decades has welcomed visitors to wander daffodil-dotted paths, said Monday on its Facebook page that it was closing “indefinitely” after a short and overwhelming season.

In doing so, it joins several sites that have been forced to close, either temporarily or for the long haul, because they could not handle the effects of crowding. An Ontario sunflower farm, a California hillside cov-

The family members who own the ranch in Volcano, Calif., never expected to become a casualty.

“The generations that came before us who purchased this property in 1887, which evolved into Daffodil Hill, could never have envisioned that their efforts would have ever grown into such a beloved attraction,” they wrote on their Facebook page.

“Sadly, it is this overwhelming popularity that has led us to our decision to close.”

They wrote that the “crush of visitors” this year made the limita-

tions of their own parking areas and the surrounding infrastructure all too clear.

The free attraction opened for the season on March 30, when the flowers were ready, with the goal of staying open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. seven days a week. But rain forced it to close April 1, and a few days later, the owners said the forecast led them to make the tough choice to close for the season.

“While we greatly appreciate our guests, the thousands who visited this past weekend completely overwhelmed our narrow county road system leading to the Hill as well as our parking, restroom facilities,

and our garden areas,” they said on Facebook at the time. “These are issues that the family will attempt to address in the coming months through meetings to identify any possible solutions before the 2020 season.”

This year’s short season followed a nonexistent one last year, also due to weather.

According to the nearby Sutter Creek Visitors Center, Ryan, his brothers and their families have planted an average of 16,000 daffodil bulbs a year over the past several years. “It is estimated that today, Daffodil Hill is carpeted with approximately 300,000 bulbs when in full bloom,” the center’s

website said.

By the time Daffodil Hill opened this year, a different floral cautionary tale was in the news. In mid-March, a “poppy apocalypse” seized a canyon southeast of Los Angeles when thousands of visitors caused gridlock trying to get to a wildflower super bloom; city officials briefly closed access to the public area after the situation spiraled out of control.

The city, Lake Elsinore, scrambled to close certain roads, increase enforcement against illegal parking, add shuttle service and establish routes just for residents; they updated a hotline, social media and official websites with the information.

Snowball has been dancing since he was dropped off at the Bird Lovers Only Rescue in Indiana in 2007. (The bird’s previous owner, who had grown older and could no longer care for Snowball, even left a copy of a Backstreet Boys album along with the rest of the bird’s things.) But the cockatoo’s dance routine was pretty simple when Patel first studied him — mostly just some head bobbing and feet lifting.

But Patel said that after the first experiment, Snowball’s new owner, Irena Schulz, told him the bird was starting to add new moves and combinations to his repertoire. In fact, he

seemed to be exploring.

So Patel and Schulz, who is also a co-author on both papers, set up a new experiment. This time, the humans played Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” and Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” while filming Snowball.

Each song was played three times, with no other input than the occasional attaboy from Schulz.

Later, R. Joanne Jao Keehn, a cognitive neuroscientist at San Diego State University and a classically and contemporarily trained dancer, broke Snowball’s movements down frame by frame and categorized them into distinct moves.

When a wavelike movement passed through the bird’s head and then body, that was

termed a “body roll.”

When Snowball lifted one leg and then bobbed his head from left to right, the scientists classified it as a “vogue.”

From “headbangs” to “head-foot syncs,” the scientists learned that while the bird had many moves that he liked to try, he usually only did each for three to four seconds at a time.

Even still, virtually none of the movements were what anyone would consider natural for a cockatoo.

“Certainly, they do movements as part of courtship,” Patel said.

“But many of the moves we see in this study are things nobody has ever reported in the wild in terms of cockatoo behavior.”

internet. After extensive searching, the scientists found evidence of true dancing in nine other pet parrot species, from green-winged macaws and black-capped lories to black-masked lovebirds and Alexandrine parakeets.

The weird part is no other animals are known to do this — not even other primates, our closest kin.

So why would humans share such a seemingly complex behavior with a bunch of birds? Patel and his colleagues think it might have something to do with the convergence of five traits, all of

which Snowball and his brethren possess.

“There’s complex vocal learning. There’s the ability to imitate nonvocal movements.

There’s the tendency to form long-term social bonds, because Snowball seems to do this as a social bonding behavior,” Patel said. “There’s the ability to learn complicated sequences of actions and being attentive to communicative movements.”

Patel said dolphins might have those same five traits. But because they live underwater, dolphins’ main social bonds are with

their own kind, even in captivity. Snowball and the other dancing birds have bonded with humans.

Now that it is clear Snowball is capable of keeping a beat and also honing his style, Patel and his team want to try to understand the bird’s motivations. The team is analyzing data from another experiment in which they recorded Snowball under three conditions — listening to music by himself; listening to music with Schultz in the room; and listening to music while Schultz dances with him.

Poker-playing computer program makes elite players fold

By Joel Achenbach The Washington Post Jason Les, one of the world’s premier poker players, was representing his species when he faced off in May against a computer program named Pluribus. The game was multiplayer no-limit Texas hold ’em. Les and other professional poker players with at least $1 million in career earnings volunteered to play the bot to test whether it had reached the elite level of

poker virtuosity.

“I was defending humanity’s dominance in this game,” Les said. “Unfortunately, I failed.”

The triumph of Pluribus was reported Thursday in the journal Science under the headline “Superhuman AI for multiplayer poker.” Like chess, checkers, Go and other games, the most popular form of poker has now been mastered by the cold, heartless machinations of a com-

puter program.

Pluribus employs a strategy that in some respects affirms the best tactical instincts of the game’s top players. But it also has some startling tendencies, including a bewildering unpredictability in its betting habits. It often bets huge sums early in a hand — reminiscent of the disruptive tactics of “Jeopardy!” champion and professional sports bettor James Holzhauer.

This milestone in

artificial intelligence has implications beyond poker, or anything happening on the gaming tables in Las Vegas.

This technology, the inventors say, could be applied to self-driving cars, auctions, contract negotiations and decisions about product development. It could even be used in political campaigns — helping candidates decide where to allocate resources in a contest with multiple opponents, each with a

secret strategy.

Moreover, unlike the “deep learning” AI programs that became unbeatable at chess and Go, Pluribus does not use massive amounts of data and computation.

“The techniques underlying it are very general and I think are going to be applied to a wide variety of settings,” said lead author Noam Brown, who works at Facebook Research and is a graduate student at Carnegie Mellon Uni-

versity, where he began this research. The key challenge, he said, is, “How do you get AI to cope with hidden information in a complex, multi-agent environment?”

Tuomas Sandholm, Brown’s adviser at Carnegie Mellon and the co-author of the new paper, said the development of Pluribus comes after 16 years of research and incremental improvements in the software.

It became apparent on a recent evening when my husband and I came home from work at about the same time. Our three kids were already finished with dinner and playing happily with their baby sitter and grandparents. The older children rushed up to give me a

big hug. The baby broke into a huge grin ... and crawled right past me.

Straight into the open arms of my husband.

Nine-month-old Charlie gurgled happily as my husband, Adam, scooped him up and nuzzled his belly. Adam toted the baby around on his hip for the rest of the evening as he made bottles, prepped our dinner and tidied the house. Then he put

But it was enough to allow Adam to step into the role of lead parent for the first time. The experience has been a game-changer for our family, especially since we didn’t even realize the game needed changing. Just a few months of gender-role reversal — Daddy at home, Mommy at work — taught us how much we both had been missing.

Of course, it didn’t come easily.

Adam wasn’t a new parent, but he was in a new role.

Don’t get me wrong: My husband has been a wonderful and deeply involved father to our older children, 6-yearold Eleanor and 4-yearold William. He was never one to shy away from a dirty diaper.

But during the early days, he simply was not around that much.

I, on the other hand, was able to stay home for six months after each of our first two children were born. We were

grateful for the time but soon learned that those early months establish a family dynamic that lasts well beyond the baby stage. Because I was home, I was the one who got up with the children at night — even after I had stopped nursing and was back at work full time. I determined their schedules and made sure diapers and wipes remained in stock. I could tell the difference between a tired cry and a hungry cry.

The pattern is selfreinforcing: The more you understand your child’s wants and needs, the more likely they are to want and need things from you. So even when Adam tried to step in, they asked for me.

ing for a new company with a progressive leave policy: four months of parental leave, meaning not only moms could take the time, but dads, too.

Adam took the company up on it. I went back to work four months after Charlie was born.

Adam stayed home for the next four months, plus a few extra weeks using accumulated vacation as well. He was the one by Charlie’s side just as he began to wake up to the world, babbling and playing peeka-boo. The investment in time paid off in a way he didn’t expect: Charlie is definitely daddy’s boy.

I remember Adam telling me that I ought to be grateful on the days our older children were especially needy.

and not-so-patiently explaining that I was emotionally exhausted, their demands overwhelming and relentless.

At least they aren’t rejecting you, he shot back.

Fair point.

Now I am second banana in our baby’s eyes, and with the benefit of experience and hindsight, I understand what he meant.

I was out of sync. I typically left for work while it was still dark outside, before the children were awake, and sometimes arrived home after the baby was already asleep. I was the one seeking direction as a parent.

Can the kids have dessert? Is this bottle clean?

Do you want me to get dinner going?

Those questions used to annoy me when my husband asked them. I’d roll my eyes, mistaking them as male cluelessness because I thought the answers should be obvious. I mean, if the bottle looks dirty, don’t use it, right?

But now that I’m on the other side, I can see they were really an act of deference. They were an acknowledgment that there is a method to the madness, and you just don’t want to mess it up.

It’s an attempt to slip back into the rhythm of the family life.

And sometimes, despite your best efforts, you can’t make up for the time you were away. In those moments, there is a twinge of heartache as you hold your baby in your arms and his lit-

tle hands reach out for Daddy.

My husband and I are both back at work full time now, but the dynamic of our family feels fundamentally altered.

On a practical level, we’ve redistributed the household chores: Adam now does all the cooking and puts Charlie to sleep every night, while I help the older kids with homework and bedtime. I order the groceries, but Adam packs the lunches. He shuttles the kids to swim class, while I take them to gymnastics.

With three kids, no one can sit on the sidelines.

We divide and conquer, and even then we need what feels like an army of help from friends and family.

SAN FRANCISCO — Tesla is racing to be first to the market with a self-driving car made for the masses, promising to send as soon as this year an over-theair software update that will turn hundreds of thousands of its vehicles into robo-cars. But its push to put untested and unregulated features in the hands of its drivers is putting industry executives and regulators on edge.

Once the update arrives, Tesla vehicles will be able to drive themselves in a city the way they can perform highway cruising now, the company said.

The electric-car maker said it will do that without light detection and ranging, or lidar, complex sensors that use laser lights to map the environment — technology most autonomous vehicle makers consider necessary.

Women who work for a salary between early adulthood and middle age experience slower memory decline, meaning they probably are at lower risk of dementia, a new study presented Tuesday at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Los Angeles suggests.

Women who engaged in paid employment between ages 16 and 50, whether mothers or nonmothers, had better memories in late life than women who did not work, the study found.

The rate of memory deterioration was fastest among women who never earned a wage.

Memory loss is one of the first signs of Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers at the University of California at Los Angeles, the University of California at San Francisco and Boston College tracked 6,836 American women born between 1935 and 1956 across about 20 years. Participants were enrollees in the Health and Retirement Study, a federally funded longterm observational study of aging people across the United States.

In the past decade, research has increasingly suggested that controllable lifestyle factors — including regular mental stimulation provided by work — can minimize the risk of cognitive decline.

Participants — all of them 50 or older at the start of the study — reported their parental and marital status and whether they worked for a wage between their mid-teens and middle age. Then, researchers gave each woman a memory assessment every two years for about two decades.

The memory test asked whether the women could remember a list of words several minutes after they first heard it. It’s a “standard memory performance evaluation” in research studies, Mayeda said.

The fashion trend that won’t go away: Matching clothes for the whole family

By Abha Bhattarai The Washington Post Whether they’re at the pool, the park or the supermarket, the five members of the Beck family are almost always matching.

One day, they’ll all be in yellow-striped swimwear. On another, it’s straw fedoras and summery linen shirts.

“We’re a prettysynced-up family,” said Ryan Beck, 39, a sales executive in Richmond, Virginia, who has 1-year-old triplets with his wife, Christy. “If we’re going to the mall, we’ll all wear jeans and a green shirt or something like that.”

Welcome to the Instagram-fueled clothing craze that won’t go

away: matching outfits for Mom, Dad and the kids — and sometimes Grandma and Grandpa.

The trend, percolating for decades, has reached fever pitch this summer as retailers as varied as H&M, Anthropologie and Saks Fifth Avenue double down on “mini-me” fashion to boost sales. Target has matching swimwear for the whole family, while “Mommy & Me” options at Neiman Marcus include Dolce & Gabbana butterfly-print skirts and dresses, Burberry sneakers and Gucci nylon jackets ($520 for toddlers, $1,400 for adults).

At Old Navy, the season’s “Daddy and Me” line includes prints with bananas, sloths and

pineapples for babies and adults. The retailer has tripled its assortment of matching family wear since 2017 to keep up with surging demand.

“At every store, it’s, ‘Oh my gosh, customers are freaking out about pineapple-print shirts for the whole family,’’’ said Andres Dorronsoro, Old Navy’s senior vice president of merchandising. “We started with the holidays — the Fourth of July, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day — but now it’s really become an everyday trend. “‘It’s Wednesday. Let’s wear the same thing, take a picture and share it on Instagram.’”

Retailers are playing along. At Old Navy, Dorronsoro said, chil-

dren’s clothing is “an important entry point to the brand.” Sales of children’s clothing have climbed to record highs, even as Americans spend less on apparel for men and women. The quest for the perfect Instagram photo has become one way to boost sales in every category: Instead of selling just one child’s swimsuit, retailers are selling four or five pieces in one go. And they’re getting free marketing on social media, where hashtags such as #twinning and #minime have been used millions of times.

Critics say the trend is cheesy, if not plain creepy. But marketing experts say its proliferation speaks to a broader need for acceptance.

“We’re driven by ‘likes,’” said Dawnn Karen, a fashion psychologist and branding consultant. “And what gets the most likes?

Children in matching clothes.”

“But,” she added, “the question becomes: Are we taking away our children’s individuality and their ability to develop their own tastes?”

Parents have been putting young siblings in matching clothing for decades. But it’s only recently that companies have started marketing the same prints and silhouettes to adults and children, said Wendy Liebmann, chief executive of the consultancy WSL Strategic Retail.

family branding elements,” said Michael Solomon, a fashion psychologist and marketing professor at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. “Childhood has become a job, and wearing matching clothes and posing for pictures is the latest requirement.”

“Mini-me fashion is the bestseller we never expected,” said Brian Lynch, the president of the children’s clothing giant Carter’s. The company has begun selling T-shirts and bodysuits with coordinating messages, such as “super mom,” “super loud” and “super tiny.” T-shirts that say “cousin crew (for life)” are among the summer’s top sellers.
