During a pandemic, Isaac Newton had to work from home, too

By Gillian Brockell Isaac Newton was in his early 20s when the Great Plague of London hit. He wasn’t a “Sir” yet, didn’t have that big formal wig.

He was just another college student at Trinity College, Cambridge.

It would be another 200 years before scientists discovered the bacteria that causes plague, but even without knowing exactly why, folks back then still practiced some of the same things we do to avoid illness.

In 1665, it was a version of “social distancing” — a public health tool making a comeback this week

as governments, schools and many businesses, including The Washington Post, send people home to try to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Cambridge sent students home to continue their studies. For Newton, that meant Woolsthorpe Manor, the family estate about 60 miles northwest of Cambridge.

Without his professors to guide him, Newton apparently thrived. The year-plus he spent away was later referred to as his annus mirabilus, the “year of wonders.”

First, he continued to work on mathematical problems

he had begun at Cambridge; the papers he wrote on this became early calculus.

Next, he acquired a few prisms and experimented with them in his bedroom, even going so far as to bore a hole in his shutters so only a small beam could come through. From this sprung his theories on optics.

And right outside his window at Woolsthorpe, there was an apple tree. That apple tree.

The story of how Newton sat under the tree, was bonked on the head by an apple and suddenly understood theories of gravity and motion, is largely

apocryphal. But according to his assistant, John Conduitt, there’s an element of truth. Here’s how Conduitt later explained it: “ . . . Whilst he was musing in a garden it came into his thought that the same power of gravity (which made an apple fall from the tree to the ground) was not limited to a certain distance from the earth but must extend much farther than was usually thought. ‘Why not as high as the Moon?’ said he to himself..”

In London, a quarter of the population would die of plague from 1665 to 1666. It was one of the last

major outbreaks in the 400 years that the Black Death ravaged Europe.

Newton returned to Cambridge in 1667, theories in hand. Within six months, he was made a fellow; two years later, a professor.

So if you’re working or studying from home over the next few weeks, perhaps remember the example Newton set. Having time to muse and experiment in unstructured comfort proved life-changing for him — and no one remembers whether he made it out of his pajamas before noon.

To prevent coronavirus, go beyond hand-washing

“Whenever you have a break in that skin barrier, that allows germs and bacteria to invade the skin area,” said Christina Johns, senior medical adviser and spokeswoman for PM Pediatrics. Any microbe can technically enter through open wounds, Johns said, but coronavirus tends to enter the body through the respiratory system. Through the skin, transmission tends to be typical skin bacteria, such as staph infections and strep.

Johns and Shapiro confirmed that moisturizing hands does not increase the likelihood of picking up or spreading germs, especially if the hands are clean.

Are your hands painfully dry and cracked because you’ve been following the widespread advice to frequently wash them or apply hand sanitizer to prevent the spread of the coronavirus? If so, you should be aware of a less widely cited hygiene recommendation: to moisturize as well.

“Keeping skin moisturized is important,” said Craig Shapiro, an attending physician in pediatric infectious diseases at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Delaware.

“If the skin is breaking down or raw, then the soap and alcohol disinfectants do not work as well. Also, when skin is chapped and broken, it’s uncomfortable, and people can be less likely

Moisturizing hands does reduce microbial shedding from the skin and is part of good hand hygiene, which will protect people from picking up viruses and reduce the likelihood of transmission.

Johns recommends that people apply a thick, emollient moisturizer in ointment form, such as Aquaphor Healing Ointment, rather than rely on creams and lotions, which can have alcohol and cause further drying. Shapiro recommends selecting a soap or sanitizer with an emollient and avoiding perfumes and dyes, as they can further irritate skin. Soaps and sanitizers with moisturizers can be just as effective, though Shapiro says hand sanitizers should have at least 60 percent alcohol.

“Lotion doesn’t need

to be a constant thing to be effective,” said Preeti Malani, an infectious-disease doctor and chief health officer at the University of Michigan. And it doesn’t need to be expensive: Drugstore brands, such as Vaseline and Aquaphor, can work well. Moisturizing lotions work by locking in existing moisture, so the ideal time to apply them is after washing, when the skin is hydrated. “At bedtime, put on some good-quality, inexpensive, effective moisturizer,” she said. “If your skin is becoming raw and dry, you might be washing your hands too much.”

Johns advises of the moisturizer: “Don’t share it with anyone else.

You want to use clean hands — you don’t want to have dirty fingers on the pumps. I know a lot

of people like to swipe their finger on the top of the tube, but touch the packaging as [little] as possible. Fewer things coming into contact is best practice in general, in terms of minimizing germs and microbes.”

While hand-washing can leave skin drier than hand sanitizer, doctors caution against relying exclusively on sanitizer.

When hands are visibly dirty or greasy, soap and water should be used instead.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends washing your hands frequently, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. You should spend 20 seconds at the sink and make sure to lather up the parts of the hands that are often

overlooked - the backs, between the fingers, the thumbs and under the nails. (Some experts recommend cutting your nails.) After washing, you should dry your hands thoroughly.

Keeping hands in good condition is especially important for healthcare workers, who must wash their hands frequently and are at a greater risk of spreading infections, Malani said.

But she warned against sharing lotion bottles in health-care settings, citing the cautionary tale of a nurse’s fungal nail infection that was colonized in a communal lotion bottle — and then spread to patients.

“We cultured all of her stuff at home — her Oil of Olay, loofah and Vaseline, and it all had [the fungus],” she said.

“It was an extreme situation.”

Tips for cleaning your gear after traveling

humidity. Hard, nonporous materials such as metal, plastic and glass are more welcoming habitats for viruses than soft goods such as fabrics.

In travel terms, this means the virus might hang out longer on the aluminum handle of your carry-on than on your canvas tote. Fortunately, the coronavirus is an enveloped virus and probably does not have a long survival rate on surfaces, according to Ann Falsey, a professor of infectious diseases at the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York. By comparison, the norovirus, the previous bane of cruise ships, is a non-enveloped virus and has a longer shelf life.

Falsey said the coronavirus can probably survive two to four days on hard surfaces, generally less than a day on fabrics and other porous materials, and 30 minutes to an hour on hands.

Months into the coronavirus crisis, travelers have grown familiar with how to protect themselves on airplanes, in hotel rooms and among crowds. But what about the risk of returning home with potentially contaminated travel gear? Can you catch or spread the virus through your luggage or clothing? Medical experts say the threat is low but suggest several precautions you can take to reduce the worry even more.

Global health organizations and professionals do not yet know how long the coronavirus can live on certain materials, so they are basing their information on similar viruses, such as the one that causes Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS).

The World Health Organization estimates the coronavirus’ survival time from a few hours to several days, depending on various factors, such as type of material, air temperature and

“You’d literally have to have someone sneeze all over it, get mucus on it and then, within minutes to a few hours, you would have to touch your bag and then your face,” he said.

When asked about disinfecting the entire bag, he responded, “Power wash your suitcase? I don’t think so.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides a recipe for bleach solution on its Environmental Cleaning and Disinfection Recommendations page: Mix five tablespoons of bleach per gallon of water or four teaspoons of bleach per quart of water. 5.7-magnitude earthquake strikes Salt Lake City, Utah

By Matthew Cappucci A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Salt Lake City at 7:09 a.m. local time Wednesday, March18, its epicenter located about four miles west-southwest of Salt Lake City International Airport. Heavy shaking was felt far and wide across north-central Utah west of the Wasatch mountains.

Many were evacuated from the airport, where the Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop for all inbound flights. Social media video emerged of damaged pipes gushing water from the ceiling in the airport.

Within an hour of the initial quake, at least a dozen aftershocks greater than 3.0 in magnitude struck in the immediate vicinity.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there is a roughly 1 in 5 chance of an aftershock greater than 5.0 in magnitude occurring.

The earthquake was shallow, occurring only about six or seven miles below the surface, which may have maximized shaking at the surface.

According to Utah’s Division of Emergency Management, it was the strongest earthquake to strike the state since 1992.

There were reports of structural damage. Cracked walls, toppled furniture and other minor damage was reported at the homes of many residents across the state capital.

Initial data suggests the earthquake was associated with “normal faulting,” which occurs when one tectonic plate slides down the side of another.

In addition, there was probably some strike-slipping, which means one plate slid a bit past the other side-to-side.

The quake is likely to have occurred along the Wasatch fault. It parallels the Wasatch Range, which is no surprise, considering the mountains were formed by it. The plate to the east rises, while that to the west dips below.

According to the USGS, the Wasatch fault zone can be divided into 10 smaller segments of faulting, about half of which have been active for 10,000 years. The USGS estimates that those segments produced quakes reaching 7.0 in magnitude about every 900 to 1,300 years.

Housebound Italian kids strain network with video games

By Daniele Lepido, Niclas Rolander Bloomberg Italy’s school shutdown is driving a surge in internet traffic as kids turn to online video games to stave off boredom.

With schools, shops and restaurants closed in an attempt to limit Europe’s worst coronavirus outbreak, the amount of data passing through Telecom Italia’s national network has surged by more than two-thirds in the past two weeks, the company said.

A lot of that extra activity is due to online games such as ‘Fortnite’ and ‘Call of Duty,’ which can involve multiple players and take up more bandwidth than the business programs and conference call apps used by adults working from home.

Gaming traffic can spike even higher when the games are refreshed and millions of kids download the latest 25-gigabyte update at once.

“We reported an increase

of more than 70 percent of Internet traffic over our landline network, with a big contribution from online gaming such as Fortnite,” Telecom Italia Chief Executive Officer Luigi Gubitosi said Wednesday on a call with analysts.

Italy’s national lockdown has shuttered all but essential services this week. On Wednesday, there was a surge in reports of lost internet connections by Telecom Italia customers. The number of complaints subsided later in the day.

“Telecom Italia’s network is working perfectly and with higher volumes compared with previous days,” the company wrote in an e-mailed statement. “The issues reported affected just some applications and the internet due to a failure of the international network.”

“All the big players in the video conferencing market have asked for bandwidth upgrades in the last 10 days and some are asking for a fivefold increase,” said Telia Carrier Vice President Mattias Fridstroem. “If no one is able to fly, they will need a huge amount of additional bandwidth.”

As movie theaters begin to close, Universal moves some films to on-demand been a modest hit, grossing $64 million in the U.S. The other two have taken in less than $15 million apiece.

“Trolls World Tour” was expected to be a decent performer when it arrived in theaters in April. The DreamWorks Animation film, inspired by the popular toy and starring Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick, is a sequel to the 2016 movie that grossed $154 million in the U.S. The film will still hit theaters — assuming any remain open.

Universal made the move as theaters are closing at a rapid rate.

Officials in both Los Angeles and New York — the country’s two largest box-office markets — have ordered all theaters shut down.

By Steven Zeitchik The Washington Post Universal Pictures took the boldest Hollywood step yet in response to the coronavirus pandemic, announcing it was bringing fresh theatrical releases to cable and satellite platforms for customer rental.

The news comes as theaters around the country begin to shut down to contain the spread of the disease.

The titles would be available at a suggested price of $19.99 for a 48-hour rental on various cable and satellite platforms, including Comcast, Universal’s sister company.

“Universal Pictures has a broad and diverse range of movies with 2020 being no exception.

Rather than delaying these films or releasing them into a challenged

Washington, D.C., ordered theaters to close at 10 p.m. Monday, along with restaurants and bars.

Those orders came as President Donald Trump urged people to avoid gatherings of more than 10 people.

Theaters in other parts of the country remain open, but the question is for how long, and if people will come when they do. Box office this past weekend was less than half of what it was on the same weekend in 2019, even with the L.A. and New York City theaters open.

The Universal news takes a step further Disney’s announcement Friday that it will shorten the so-called “home video” platform for “Frozen 2” — that is, take a movie currently in DVD release and

put it on Disney Plus in the hope of driving subscriptions. Comcast might have wished to do the same using Peacock, its new streaming service, but the platform does not launch until July.

Beyond the pandemic, the Universal news pushes further the possibility of so-called dayand-date releases for studio movies — that is, films available simultaneously in theaters and on home-viewing platforms, which the industry has talked about with a mix of fear and excitement for years.

Day-and-date has been a tool regularly used by small and independent releases but not larger studio releases.

Still, whether Universal will attempt this with higher-profile releases or use the “Troll”

experiment as a gateway to try the same strategy after the pandemic ends is not clear: The studio had just moved its much-anticipated action sequel “F9” from a May theatrical release to a rollout in theaters in April 2021.

Bill Gates leaves Microsoft’s board

SEATTLE — Bill Gates, who co-founded Microsoft and led the company as it became a technology juggernaut, is stepping down from the company’s board to spend more time on his philanthropic work.

Gates, who made the announcement Friday afternoon, said in a LinkedIn post he wants to “dedicate more time to philanthropic priorities including global health and development, education, and my increasing engagement in tackling climate

change.” He declined to comment beyond the post, his spokeswoman Bridgitt Arnold said.

Gates founded Microsoft in 1975 with his high school friend Paul Allen, who passed away in October 2018.

His competitive zeal helped create a company that dominates the personal computing industry. In the process, Gates amassed a fortune. He is currently the second wealthiest person in the world with $102 billion, behind only Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. (Bezos owns The Washington Post.)

Gates began moving away from Microsoft in 2000, when he gave up the chief executive post he long held to Steve Ballmer, to serve as chief software architect and chairman. In 2008, he stepped down as chief software architect and gave up his day-to-day duties at the company to spend the bulk of his work time at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He stepped down as Microsoft’s chairman in 2014.

Gates will continue to serve as Technology Advisor to Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella and others at the company. Microsoft isn’t filling

Gates’ seat on the board.

“With respect to Microsoft, stepping down from the board in no way means stepping away from the company,” Gates wrote.

In a statement, Nadella said he looks forward to continuing to work with Gates. Microsoft declined to make Nadella available.

Gates will also step away from his one other board position at Berkshire Hathaway, the company run by his longtime friend Warren Buffett.

“Warren and I were the best of friends long before I joined and will be long after,” Gates wrote.

By Tony Romm The Washington Post AT&T, Comcast and Verizon joined dozens of telecom providers in agreeing to aid Americans who are out of work or school because of the coronavirus, including by preserving service for those that are unable to pay their bills.

The commitments came Friday as part of a pledge orchestrated by the Federal Communications Commission, whose chairman, Ajit Pai, said the vast disruptions caused by the deadly outbreak make it “imperative that Americans stay connected” As part of the so-called “Keep Americans Connected Pledge,” nationwide telecom giants including CenturyLink and T-Mobile and more regional providers across the country agreed for the next 60 days that they would not terminate service or assess late fees on customers and businesses that fall behind on their bills. They also agreed

to open Wi-Fi hot spots to any American who needs them.

The announcements offer the latest illustration of the vast, immediate impact of coronavirus. The malady has shuttered businesses and schools, where workers and educators fear mass gatherings may hasten the disease’s spread, and it threatens to overwhelm the U.S. health system as sick Americans seek much-needed tests.

To some, the Internet offers a solution: Allowing people to work, learn or talk to their doctors over tools like video chatting made possible by high-speed connections. But not everyone has, or can afford, such speedy, modern connectivity. Only about two-thirds of people in rural areas, for example, say they have broadband connectivity at home, according to the Pew Research Center, which published its findings last year.

The FCC devotes bil-

lions of dollars annually to spur the expansion of broadband networks in the most remote or neglected parts of the country, and it offers a slew of programs meant to help schools and parents afford much-needed devices to get online.

But some lawmakers and regulators say it hasn’t been enough, and they have called on the U.S. government in recent days to redouble its efforts in the wake of coronavirus.

“We are going to explore the expansion of telework, telehealth and tele-education,” said Jessica Rosenworcel, a Democratic com-

missioner at the FCC, during a congressional hearing this week. “In the process we are going to expose some really hard truths about the digital divide.”

The FCC pledge announced Friday comes in addition to steps taken by individual companies in recent days as coronavirus has evolved into a pandemic.

AT&T, for example, said it would lift the monthly data limits it imposes on some home broadband customers. And Comcast said it would raise the speed of customers who are part of its low-income broadband program.

Toilet paper shortage is real. But it should be brief.

By Todd C. Frankel The Washington Post Adding to the nation’s long list of worries sparked by the novel coronavirus pandemic, the shortage of toilet paper is real.

Store shelves in many places have been picked clean in recent days of single-ply and double-ply, single and jumbo rolls, the cheap stuff and the luxurious quilted squares, too.

Anything will do in an emergency.

The run on toilet paper has struck many people as peculiar, given that the need for the product is not expected

to grow as millions of Americans adjust to working from home, closed schools, canceled events and the other abrupt interruptions to daily life caused by the pandemic.

But stockpiling is not an uncommon reaction provoked by fear, social scientists say.

Fear of running out. Fear of the unknown and what’s to come.

After the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan, researchers at Hitotsubashi University studied buying patterns and concluded, “we can say that particularly anxious households appear to have bought any-

thing that they could lay their hands on.”

Including lots of toilet paper.

Now, the lack of toilet paper in the United States has hit some supermarkets and Costco stores. Amazon appeared to be down to single rolls of novelty toilet paper in some places Friday.

The shortages appeared to be sporadic and regional, with the degree of local concern about the pandemic driving sales.

But the nation’s lack of toilet paper is expected to be brief, according to interviews with retailers and manufacturers.

The sudden surge in demand is expected to subside and the supply will continue to grow as companies keep making toilet paper. About 90% of the toilet paper sold in the U.S. is made here, too, according to industry data.

“We continue to manufacture and ship Charmin to our retailers,” a Procter & Gamble spokesman said in a statement, adding that they’ve noticed the sale spike and were working to fix availability problems.

But that still means some empty shelves, for now.

experiencing shortages and out of stocks on many household staples,” said Ashley Flower, public relations manager at The Giant Co., which runs 186 grocery stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. “We are focused on getting back in stock as soon as possible.”

But toilet paper has not disappeared entirely from stores.

Ample supplies were available midday Friday at Snider’s Super Foods in Silver Spring, Maryland, said manager Alex Xenochristos.

“We’ve been able to keep up with demand,” he said. “But I don’t know for how long.”
