3-D printed chocolate to start reaching consumer market

Ultimately, consumers may even have 3-D chocolate printers next to their coffee machines in their kitchens.

“The idea of having a chocolate-printing machine at home with capsules that allow you to do something is a great idea,” Perversi said. “We haven’t gone as far as that just yet, but there are opportunities for us to do that and we’ll explore them.”

Man deliberately darted his car in front of Waymo minivans to cause crash, Arizona police say

By Michael Laris The Washington Post A former safety driver for self-driving car company Waymo was arrested Wednesday and charged with aggravated assault and reckless driving after police in Arizona said he repeatedly darted his Mazda in front of the firm’s minivans and deliberately caused a crash.

Raymond Tang, 31, cut in front of two Waymo vehicles on Jan. 30, slamming the brakes each time, according to onboard video and a statement released by the Tempe Police

Department on Thursday.

Both Waymo vehicles were being driven manually. One driver was able to stop in time. The second was not.

“Tang admitted to ‘brake-checking’ the Waymo vehicle, which ultimately rear-ended his vehicle,” police said in a statement. Tang is also being investigated for possibly targeting Waymo minivans in a similar way in nearby Chandler, authorities said.

Waymo said in a statement that “this same individual had engaged in similar conduct,

which resulted in misdemeanor charges for disorderly conduct and criminal damage against him in November 2019.”

Waymo said Tang was a “disgruntled” former vehicle operator employed by technology staffing firm Genesis10.

Tang’s “assignment with Waymo ended nearly a year ago when he failed to meet the high safety standards,” Waymo said, without providing details.

Police said Tang was booked into the Tempe city jail. He could not immediately be reached for comment. In addition to assault and

Travel laundry bag says it will get your clothes cleaner than hand-washing

To tackle the job, most travelers look to their hotel’s services, local laundromats or whatever sink may be available where they’re sleeping. Now there’s a fourth option to turn to: the Scrubba wash bag.

The product bills itself as the world’s smallest washing machine, able to give your clothes a

In at least one case, at one of Waymo’s rivals, safety drivers have fallen short, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. One of Uber’s safety drivers was streaming “The Voice” on her phone in the run up to a deadly self-driving crash in Tempe in 2018, and did not try to brake until after the car hit a pedestrian, the NTSB said.

crashes on public roads.

“Incidents such as this one reinforce the importance of Waymo’s mission: to make it safe for people to get where they’re going and to help save the thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes caused by humans,” Waymo said.

Tempe police said they would pursue the case “to the fullest extent of the law.” The department “has zero tolerance for intentional acts that either cause or have the ability to cause, damage, injury or endanger the lives of others,” the statement said.

In Hollywood, a finale for the ‘Witness Tree,’ a century-old oak made famous in countless movies

Even in death, the Witness Tree looked alive.

With twin trunks and a regal crown of tangled branches, the gigantic valley oak stood in the middle of Hollywood’s Paramount Ranch for at least a century, perhaps witnessing enough films to rival Roger Ebert.

It witnessed the making of silent movies and TV westerns, fake gunfights and real car crashes. It saw Bob Hope in “Caught in the Draft” and Sandra Bullock in “The Lake House.” And it witnessed weddings and parties too, hosting hundreds of guests beneath its leafy outstretched branches.

But early in the morning of Nov. 9, 2018, it witnessed something frightening. The flames of Southern California’s Woolsey Fire ravaged through the Santa Monica Mountains, taking out a stand of willow trees before surging onto Paramount Ranch. The entire Western Town’s Main Street, recently

the set of HBO’s “Westworld,” burned to the ground.

The tree’s bark was charred black. Its bare branches looked spindly and skeletal. Yet despite all the destruction in the 750 acres around it, the Witness Tree was somehow still standing.

The National Park Service, which oversees the

historic movie ranch, kept hoping that the tree would come back to life, maybe next year.

But last month, a pair of arborists — tree surgeons — visited the tree to make a prognosis, Ana Beatriz Cholo, a National Park Service spokeswoman, told The Washington Post.

They declared the

beloved tree dead.

On Saturday, the National Park Service will host a memorial service for the Witness Tree, so people can pay their respects to the majestic valley oak before it is cut down.

It will be, in some ways, just like a funeral:

The Park Service will set up easels, displaying pictures of the tree over the course of its life, through movies and weddings and events. Paramount Ranch film historians will tell stories, tracing the valley oak’s journey through a diverse amount of pretend film landscapes.

“We wanted to give folks an opportunity to say goodbye,” Cholo told The Post.

No one quite knows

how old the Witness Tree was when it died.

Given its size, 100 inches in diameter at breast height, Cholo said the park’s plant specialists believe the tree is likely more than 100 years old.

“It may have even witnessed the settlement of Native Americans, the Chumash, who are the historic native people who inhabited these lands,” Cholo said.

It witnessed, at the very least, the settlement of Paramount Pictures in 1927, when the company purchased 2,700 acres of what was then

called Rancho Las Virgenes, a former Spanish land grant. In the ensuing years, the ranch would be transformed into a cascade of distinct worlds, ranging from colonial Massachusetts in the “Maid of Salem” to ancient China in “The Adventures of Marco Polo,” according to the Park Service.

The ranch’s western-themed heyday

would arrive in the ‘50s, in the glory days of the TV cowboy. William Hertz, an entrepreneur who moved out west aspiring to be a real cowboy, bought a portion of the land not far from the first Ronald Reagan Ranch, according to the Malibu Times. There, he built a new Western Town out of old Paramount prop storage sheds and studio buildings.

With dusty streets and mountains in the backdrop, the revitalized ranch would become the set for popular westerns including “The Cisco

Kid,” “Gunsmoke,” and much later, the ‘90s drama “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.”

The Park Service ultimately bought the site in 1980, opening it to the public.

Since the fire, the Santa Monica Mountains Fund has been set up to help rebuild the town and return the site to its former glory.

Only a few buildings survived the blaze, including a stately white church built for “Westworld” and a train station from “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.”

Debris still litters the landscape, and a chainlink fence surrounds the decaying Witness Tree.

“It really did put up a good fight,” Cholo said of the tree’s efforts to revitalize itself. “It even put out some leaves shortly after the fire. But it just seemed like it couldn’t hang on.”

Cholo said it will be felled within the month.

Once it’s chopped down, arborists will count its rings to discover its exact age. Then, in wooden benches and signs and hitching posts, the Witness Tree will live on.

A student grew his hair out for his sick sister; withdraws from school after being told to cut it

By Katie Mettler The Washington Post When 11-year-old Maggie Johnson got sick last October, her rural Texas school district rallied behind her.

Community members raised $3,000 to offset the fifth grader’s medical bills, shipped encouraging cards to the girl, and sent their thoughts and prayers.

In a Facebook post rallying “Pirate Nation,” Poth Independent School District officials said Maggie had been diagnosed with Wegener’s, a rare autoimmune disease that damages the kidneys, and asked parents and students to pray for the girl known for her “fiery red hair” and “a spunky personality to match.”

In the months that followed, Maggie was hospitalized and began receiving intense therapies to manage her illness, reported local TV station WOAI/KABB in Poth, about 35 miles southeast of San Antonio. The dialysis and chemotherapy gave her headaches, made her nauseated and caused her signature locks to start falling out.

Her big brother, 16-year-old Newt Johnson, proposed a solution: He would begin growing out his hair, with the intent of donating it to Locks of Love, in case Maggie eventually needed a wig.

“It made me feel good that I could do something for her,” Newt told TV reporter Alejandra Guzman-Tracy.

Locks of Love, an organization that creates wigs from human hair, requires that all donations be at least 10 inches long. But by winter break in December, when Newt’s growing hair had passed his ears, the Poth High School principal told the teen he was no longer in compliance with the student handbook hair policies, CNN reported.

Male students are not permitted to have hair that surpasses the “ear opening” on the sides of their head nor the “top of a dress shirt collar.”

“No ‘tails’ of any kind will be allowed for male students,” according to school policy.

Newt had to cut his hair, school officials said.

But by mid-January, the teen’s hair was still growing. On Jan. 21, school officials told CNN they asked Newt’s mother, Jamie Mathis-Johnson, to pick him up from school and make an appointment.

“It really stressed me out because I already worried about my sister,” Newt told WOAI/ KABB. The family initially challenged the policy, but declined an invitation to escalate the issue to the superintendent’s office, CNN

reported. Instead, Newt decided to withdraw and be home-schooled.

News of the conflict between the Johnsons and the school district over the hair policy were first reported by WOAI/KABB last week, prompting a backlash in the community that led school officials to write a now-deleted Facebook post criticizing the TV station.

Superintendent Paula Renken said there is an annual process outlined in the student handbook to formally challenge the dress code. The review takes place at the start of a new school year, when the school board makes changes to district guidelines. Renken defended the high school principal and said he was doing his job when he enforced the school’s hair policy.

“I am Poth Proud to lead this high performing district that reflects the morals, beliefs and goals of the community of Poth,” Renken wrote in the Facebook post. “Proudly flying flags, arming school staff for student safety, drug testing students, enforcing a conservative dress code, prayer, faith and family are traits of Poth supported in the actions of the elected school board, administration and staff.”

“It was never about not supporting a sick child,” Renken wrote.

The school district did not respond to a request for comment from The Washington Post.

Alan Johnson, Newt and Maggie’s father, said in an interview

with WOAI/KABB that Newt’s commitment to his sister would “make any dad proud.”

“Listen to your kids, if they really believe in something, even if

it does go against the rules, sometimes you just have to dig deep see if it’s really worth it or not,” Johnson told the TV station. “It’s worth it.”

Turtles the size of car once roamed Earth Scientists just found their fossils.

By Reis Thebault In the swamps of northern South America some 10 million years ago, quotidian life-ordeath battles unfolded at epic scale. Giant caimans, in the same family as alligators, stalked the wetlands of modern-day Venezuela and Colombia, slinking along at 30-feet, snout to tail. Among their most formidable prey: the Stupendemys geographicus, a colossal turtle about which little was known — ed Wednesday in the journal Science Advances, reveals important findings about the Stupendemys, a now-extinct

freshwater turtle, and details the discovery of one of its shells — the largest known turtle shell found to date, at nearly nine-and-ahalf-feet long. The animal would have resembled, in length and weight, a midsized car.

The hulking reptile was about 100 times the size of its closest living relative, the Amazon river turtle, and twice the size of the largest living turtle, the marine leatherback, the researchers estimated.

The new findings provide the most thorough accounting yet of the Stupendemys, helping scientists answer crucial questions about what may have been the largest turtle to ever live.

“For almost four decades, we didn’t have new and excel-

lently preserved fossils of this turtle,” Edwin Cadena, a paleontologist at the Universidad del Rosario in Colombia and one of the study’s lead researchers, told The Washington Post. “Many questions — about its diet, if there were differences between males and females, and even if we were dealing with one or more giant turtle species — were completely unknown.”

But thanks to the recently unearthed fossils, dug up in northern Venezuela and Colombia’s Tatacoa Desert, Cadena and his co-authors have been able to fill in some of those blanks, which have lingered since the 1970s, when the animal was first described. It now appears likely that Stupendemys geographi-

cus was the lone species of giant turtle living in the region at that time, he said, and there were differences between the sexes and their diet was diverse and omnivorous.

Among their most surprising discoveries, Cadena said, was the presence of sturdy, front-facing horns on the shells of the males — “something completely new for such a giant turtle,” he said. The researchers hypothesize that the horns were used as “weapons in malemale combat behaviors.” Deep scrapes in the horn of one fossil indicated they may have been used by turtles tangling over territory, they said.

Cadena and his team found more marks, too, some that told of their

fearsome, frantic fights with the Purussaurus, the giant caimans that roamed the northern Neotropics during the Miocene epoch, the same time and place as the Stupendemys. The scars from their skirmishes are still visible today.

Some of the Stupendemys fossils had bite marks and punctured bones, and one shell had a tooth embedded in it.

Earth’s landscape at the time of the Stupendemys bore little resemblance to today’s topography. The turtle’s habitat has turned to desert, but then, it was humid and swampy. The Andes weren’t yet fully formed and the Orinoco and Amazon rivers cut different paths.

But those ideal conditions were not to last.

Over time, plate tectonics pushed the Andes higher, disrupting the water systems and drastically reducing the scope of their habitat, the researchers wrote.

“Vaccines act as a firewall that prevents the spread of diseases to others,” Nasif says.

When enough people develop resistance to a disease by getting a vaccine, the chance that a virus can infect someone and then keep spreading drops to near

zero. This is how polio went from a disease that was infecting 350,000 people a year in 1988 to one that caused just 33 cases reported worldwide in 2018. Of course, the protection only continues if people continue to give their bodies a cheat code to beat polio — vaccines.

Many people are concerned that a new virus coming from China could become a big problem for people around the world. Nasif says that scientists are working hard to create a vaccine for this coronavirus, which causes a

disease called covid-19, but that it takes time to produce a vaccine that will be safe to use in people.

For now, she says the best thing you can do to protect yourself against this or any other viruses, bacteria and other things that cause diseases, is to wash your hands frequently and avoid being close to people who are coughing or sneezing.

Nasif also suggests eating a healthy diet and getting plenty of sleep at night — two ways you can give your immune system a helping hand.

Its message: The brand has achieved a milestone by removing artificial preservatives from the Whopper sandwich in over 400 restaurants in the U.S. and will reach all U.S. restaurants by the end of the year. With it, the chain is announcing that more than 90 percent of food ingredients at Burger King are now free from artificial colors, flavors and preservatives, and that 100 percent of ingredients are free of MSG and high-fructose corn syrup.

not delineate which preservatives would be removed and from which menu components.

Nutrition watchdogs are optimistic but still scrutinizing. Lisa Lefferts, senior scientist at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, wonders about the details.

“Some preservatives are perfectly safe, others not. Consumers are leery of different chemical additives, so companies are responding to that by limiting additives,” she said. “Good old-fashioned added sugar and salt are causing more problems than those that have more unfamiliar names. Artificial sugars, food dyes — we think companies should disclose which specific ingredients they do not permit. Let’s focus on public health and transparency.”
