Mr. Peanut’s Super Bowl funeral will go on

By Maura Judkis The Washington Post The televised funeral of recently deceased Planters spokes-legume Mr. Peanut — a commercial set to air during Sunday’s Super Bowl — will continue as planned, despite the ad’s similarities to the death of basketball legend Kobe Bryant, a Planters spokesman confirmed Monday. None of these are words that anyone could have predicted would go together in one sentence, but here we are.

The company is pausing its online ad campaign on social media sites such as Twitter and YouTube but has not planned to alter or cancel its ad for the big game — which, coincidentally, features the death of a celebrity icon in a fiery crash on a remote hillside. The first commercial was

Ad Age first reported that the company was rethinking its marketing leading up to the Super Bowl. A social media campaign had encouraged people to “pay your respects” with the hashtag #RIPeanut, and Planters changed its Twitter handle to “The Estate of Mr. Peanut.” Twitter users joke-mourned the death of the 104-yearold mascot with fan art and comments about his legacy.

Many of them were negative: “Mr Peanut was a bootlicker who made his fortune off the oppression and death

of his fellow peanuts.

I am glad he’s dead,” said one Twitter user.

Mr. Peanut “roasting” in hell quickly became a meme.

That meant thousands of people were talking about the ad more than a week before the Super Bowl — an indication of its success. It even featured prominently on the cold open for this weekend’s “Saturday Night Live,” in a sketch that showed Trump lawyer Alan Dershowitz (played by comedian Jon Lovitz) being interviewed for Satan’s podcast in hell, where all of Dershowitz’s friends come by to greet him: Jeffrey Epstein, the guy who wrote the “Baby Shark” song, and, yes, Mr. Peanut.

“You ended up in hell?” Dershowitz asks Mr. Peanut.

“Well, I took out a lot of first-graders with peanut allergies,” said Mr. Peanut. “Plus, I never wore pants.”

Guest collapses when he learns the real value of his watch

By Hannah Knowles The Washington Post The “Antiques Roadshow” guest kept his cool as an appraiser said his watch, snagged decades ago in the Air Force, was no ordinary Rolex. Informed that it was a lot like a model once worn by Paul Newman that auctions for $200,000, the camouflage-bandanna-clad owner just nodded.

Then the appraiser noted the tiny word “Oyster” inscribed on the clock’s face.

That made the trinket “extremely, extremely rare,” the kind of watch that sells for $400,000.

The man toppled backward to the ground with enough force that his feet flew up into the air.

There was laughter and a mildly concerned “You OK?” - but also more good news

to come. The Rolex was also in near-perfect condition, the grinning watch-owner heard next. The discount purchase that set him back $345.97 in 1974 - in the range of a month’s military salary - was now worth between $500,000 and $700,000.

Appraiser Peter Planes declared it one of the greatest watches he’d ever seen on “Antiques Roadshow.”

The moment, filmed on tour in a North Dakota pioneer town, would top the season’s finds and delight staff who say they’ve never seen a guest literally floored, even on a TV show that thrives on stunning people with the value of objects often tucked away for years.

“It’s one of the rarest Paul Newman models, and in this condition, I don’t think there’s a better one in the world,”

Planes said in Monday’s kickoff for the program’s 24th season.

The watch owner, whom “Antiques Roadshow” has identified only as David, greeted the final dollar estimate with closed eyes and a word that was bleeped out.

David explained on Monday’s show that he became interested in a Rolex while stationed in Thailand in the 1970s, working to clear roads of land mines and clean up munition storage spots. He noticed that airline pilots seemed to wear the watches — but they were out of his price range.

A fan of scuba diving, he said, he eventually decided to spring for a watch that could survive underwater and ordered a Rolex through his base exchange at a 10 percent discount. But when the fancy accessory arrived,

he ended up locking it away in a safety deposit box.

“I looked at it and I said, ‘you know, this is really too nice to take down in the salty water’,” David said.

He claims he only took it out two or three times until the summer that “Antiques Roadshow” came to the Fargo area’s historic Bonanzaville.

That’s part of what makes this particular Oyster Cosmography, also known as a Daytona, so valuable, said Planes, of Luxe Auctioneers. The numbered foil sticker on its back, normally the first thing to wear off, was still intact.

Also a boon, he said: the fact that Newman popularized the Daytona Rolex in the 1969 drama “Winning.” The watch became intertwined with the actor and race car driver’s image, as Travis Andrews report-

ed for The Washington Post: “The mechanical watch radiated coolness, much like its owner. It was a constant companion to Newman’s left wrist in magazine shoots, paparazzi photos and while he was speeding around in his race cars. The model, which was ‘made famous by him thanks to this very timepiece,’ was eventually nicknamed the ‘Paul Newman Daytona,’ Phillips Auction House said in a news release.”

Newman’s actual watch was auctioned off in 2017 for a world-record-breaking $17,752,500 after 12 minutes of bidding.

The “Antiques Roadshow” guest’s watch may not have graced a star’s wrist, but it’s actually more special than the model Newman wore, Planes told David.

The word Oyster indi-

cates that this accessory had a particularly water-resistant case, he said.

And with the immaculate conditions and saved paperwork to boot — the blank warranty paper alone is probably worth about $2,000, Planes guessed — the watch was a season highlight.

“Unbelievable,” David said on the show.

Birds use cool tactics to survive winter’s chill

By Gina Rich The Washington Post Against a backdrop of fluffy white snow, a brilliant red cardinal perches on a tree branch. It’s a beautiful sight — but did you ever wonder how feathered friends stay warm and cozy when it’s freezing outside?

Jean Strelka, a naturalist at Schlitz Audubon Nature Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has been studying birds for 30 years. Besides cardinals, other birds that don’t migrate during winter include chickadees, owls and some woodpeckers and robins. Strelka said these birds use different strategies to cope with cold weather.

In fall, birds grow extra feathers — their version of a winter jacket — to prepare for the colder months. When temperatures drop, birds keep warm by shivering, “just like you jumping up and down when you get cold outside,” said Strelka. Some species, such as chickadees and bluebirds, often huddle together to share heat.

Have you ever noticed a bird puffing out its feathers on a chilly day? This is another cold-weather adaptation: By trapping air in its feathers, the bird creates a toasty layer of warmth around itself.

Some birds use a more extreme strategy to survive. In a process called torpor, “birds are actu-

ally able to lower their body temperature by as much as 50 degrees,” Strelka said. A bird’s normal body temperature is 105 degrees. By bringing body temperature closer to the air temperature, torpor helps birds conserve heat and energy, especially at night. But it’s risky: Because birds can’t move during torpor, they’re more vulnerable to predators.

Even with these adaptations, birds can still use our help when it’s cold outside.

By providing extra shelter in your backyard, you can protect birds from frigid temperatures and predators. A brush pile built of sticks and evergreen

branches offers a cozy place to hide. So does an old Christmas tree, positioned safely away from the wind. Roost boxes are a special type of birdhouse that you can build or buy. Birds enter these thick-walled boxes through a hole at the bottom and can rest on perches inside.

Harsh winters make it challenging for birds to find food. You can ask a grown-up to help you install a feeder, or make your own using pine cones, peanut butter and seeds.

To protect birds from high-speed window collisions, place feeders either within five to 10 feet of your home or more than 20 feet away, said Dan Panetti, owner

of Wild Birds Unlimited in Mequon, Wisconsin.

Try to keep your feeders full if you know a storm is coming.

“Birds can sense it and feed like crazy,” Strelka said.

If you choose a seed blend for your feeder, look for peanuts, sunflower seeds or safflower seeds as the main ingredients. These provide nutritious calories, said Panetti. Just like us, birds enjoy a variety of foods, so you might also offer mixed nuts, mealworms or suet, a form of fat that’s an excellent source of energy in the cold.

During a Pokémon Direct on Thursday, two expansions were announced for Sword and Shield: Isle of Armor (coming June 2020) and the Crown of Tundra (Fall

2020). Both will be set in unexplored territories in the Galar region, and come with a bevy of new areas, new battle challenges, characters, Pokémon, customizable outfits and more. For those who want to experience both Isle of Armor and The Crown of Tundra, you can prepurchase expansion passes today on the Nintendo eShop for $29.99. There are two separate expansion passes: one for Pokémon Sword and one for Pokémon Shield.

Both Isle of Armor and The Crown of Tundra will include their own take on the Wild Area, which is a seamless map filled with Pokémon dens for max raid battles.

Game Freak says these locations will be even larger and will include over 200 existing Pokémon, as well as Legendary ones.

Isle of Armor introduces a new island on the outskirts of Galar, and its story focuses on themes “of growth,” according to the developers.

It’s filled with “beautiful nature, bogs, caves, and dunes,” as announced during the stream. In a Dojo for Pokémon battles, you will meet your new and powerful mentor, Mustard. The expansion comes with new rivals as well: Klara, who is a poison type, and Avery, a psychic type.

The Crown of Tundra takes

place in a snowy region where you may notice “a strange temple” or a giant tree “growing in a place it doesn’t belong.” It also offers a deeper dive into Pokémon dens, which players only had a glimpse of during max raid battles in Sword and Shield.

As you explore these dens and wild areas in either expansion, your starter Pokémon (if fully evolved into Rillaboom, Cinderace or Inteleon) will gain the ability to turn into their Gigantamax forms for the first time.

For those who haven’t yet beaten Pokémon Sword and Shield’s story, the developers signaled that it wouldn’t be

a problem. Players can hop into the expansions without having concluded the games’ main quests.

Another announcement during the Nintendo Direct included the reveal of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, a game arriving on March 6 for Nintendo Switch. It continues the Mystery Dungeon spinoff series that began 15 years ago with Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team. A demo version is available now on the eShop, and progress you make in this free trial will transfer over to the full game when it releases.

These radio stations don’t air news or music, just time signals

By Erin Blakemore The Washington Post If you tune a shortwave radio to 2.5, 5, 10 or 15 MHz, you can hear a little part of radio history — and the output of some of the most accurate time devices on Earth.

Depending on where you are in the United States, those frequencies will bring you to

WWV and WWVH, two extremely accurate time signal stations.

Developed before commercial radio existed, WWV recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. It’s the oldest continually operating radio station in the United States.

Both stations are overseen by the National Institute of Standards

and Technology, the federal agency that governs standards for weights and measures and helps define the world’s official time.

Early on, WWV focused on experimental broadcasts (think Victrola concerts that wowed early radio users). Beginning in 1945, it began broadcasting time, too.

In 1948, it was joined by a sister station in Hawaii for better Pacific Coast coverage. Unlike its Pacific counterpart, WWV also broadcasts at 20 MHz. The format is barebones: Ticktock-like tones mark each second. Every minute, a voice announces Coordinated Universal Time, also known as

Sandi Toksvig is leaving ‘The Great British Baking Show’

Sandi Toksvig announced Thursday that she will be leaving as the co-host of “The Great British Baking Show,” three seasons after joining the hugely popular baking competition series in the wake of a massive cast shake-up. Toksvig, one half of the comedic duo that paired her with the lanky, eccentric Noel Fielding, had evolved as a warm, selfdeprecating presence on the show — who also gamely allowed

herself to be the subject of many (many) jokes about her diminutive height.

According to a Channel 4 news release, the British network that swiped the series from BBC in 2016, Toksvig says she will be focusing on “other work.” That will include another series for the channel, this one a spelling-bee driven program called “The Write Offs,” says the Guardian.

“Bake Off is a wonderful programme which has already proved it can happily withstand a change of

hosting personnel,” Toksvig said in the release. “The reason for that, of course, is that the true stars of the show are the bakers themselves. I wish everyone well.”

At this point, the friendliest competition series on TV is no stranger to change.

Toksvig, Fielding and judge Prue Leith entered the fold following the network switcheroo after original hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, as well as beloved judge Mary Berry, declined to follow the show to

Channel 4. The network significantly upped the ante on how much production company Love Productions would get paid for “The Great British Bake Off” (or GBBO, as it’s known on the other side of the pond). Judge Paul Hollywood was the only original cast member to stay. Additionally, the show began airing on Netflix, rather than PBS, in America.

I, for one, will miss Toksvig. I probably could have done without all the short jokes, but she exuded a warmth and wit that

was both comforting and entertaining. Her feelings came across as genuine and heartfelt, and it would not be unusual to see her get choked up when it came time for the unenviable task of sending bakers home. In contrast to Fielding’s brash, flashier humor, hers was sweet and relatable. In truth, she reminded me a lot of Giedroyc and Perkins, which was a good thing in my book.

Disney to Receding sea ice a blessing remove ‘Fox’ and potential curse for seals from 20th Century studio name

By Steven Zeitchik The Washington Post Disney is removing “Fox” from the name of its 20 Century Fox film division, continuing a process of subsuming the company it bought last year for $71 billion.

The unit has been renamed 20th Century Studios, while the iconic 20th Century Fox logo will no longer contain the word “Fox.” Meanwhile, Fox Searchlight, the prestige unit behind films such as 2020 Oscar best picture nominee “Jojo Rabbit” and past winners “Slumdog Millionaire” and “12 Years a Slave,” is being re-branded as Searchlight Pictures.

The two Fox-branded TV studios that Disney bought in last year’s deal, 20th Century Fox Television and Fox 21 Television Studios, will retain their Fox names, at least for now.

The news was first reported by Variety.

The move further separates, at least in the public eye, Disney and Rupert Murdoch’s new Fox Corporation, which counts the Fox Broadcasting Network and Fox News among its core assets.

Disney and Fox spokespeople did not immediately comment.

The move was not unexpected. While Disney has in the past maintained much of the branding of acquired companies such as Marvel and Pixar, Fox has long been in a different category. The other companies’ staffs remained largely intact, but Disney began letting go of hundreds of Fox film employees last year.

Disney at the time also unexpectedly fired Elizabeth Gabler, who had been running the Fox 2000 label; many had expected the division to continue under Disney.

20th Century Fox is one of Hollywood’s most historic names and brands. The studio, itself formed by a merger in the 1930′s, released some of the biggest classics in movie history, including “The Sound of Music,” “The French Connection” and “Avatar.” The sight of its logo along with its memorable theme music provided the rare studio brand that carried weight with ordinary consumers.

With the decision, Disney has signaled its attention to dissociate itself from Fox as Fox News remains a polarizing force. Disney has sought to stay above the culture-wars fray and appeal to families across the ideological spectrum, not always successfully.

The disassociation from Fox also helps to disentangle Disney from Murdoch — at least publicly. Murdoch still holds as much as $10 billion in Disney shares.

Branding is only part of the issue for Disney and its Fox acquisition. The entertainment giant has struggled with movies it bought from 20th Century Fox, with “Dark Phoenix,” “Stuber” and several others underperforming in the past year. Only “Ford v Ferrari” has been an exception. The Matt Damon-Christian Bale auto-racing movie has grossed more than $200 million worldwide and been nominated for a best picture Oscar.

Disney chief executive Bob Iger last summer blamed Fox movies for the company’s poor quarterly results. At the time he also was seeking a “new direction” and an attempt to “turn around” the unit under Disney studio chiefs Alan Horn and Alan Bergman.

The box-office trend has continued into 2020, with the deep-sea horror movie “Underwater” opening to just $7 million last weekend.

MOMBETSU, Japan - The sea ice that normally cloaks Japan’s northern coastline in the winter is receding as the oceans around here warm dramatically. For the seals that make these seas their home, that is proving to be a mixed blessing.

The La Pérouse (or Soya) Strait, a 26-mile-wide body of water dividing Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido and Russia’s Sakhalin peninsula, is no longer icebound throughout the winter, and spotted seals are pouring through the strait from their traditional habitats in the Sea of Okhotsk to reach the rich fishing grounds of the Sea of Japan along Hokkaido’s western coast.

There, they feast on salmon and octopus in the nets placed along the coast by Japanese fishermen before returning north to the Sea of Okhotsk to give birth on the sea ice in March.

“Fishermen use fixed nets, and that means the area has become a convenient, perfect feeding place for seals,” said Mari Kobayashi, a professor at Tokyo University of Agriculture. “Once some find out about it, others follow. Today, seals can be seen in droves in a region that they weren’t found before, arriving early and staying late.”

That is already bringing them into conflict with humans, causing millions of dollars a year in losses to fishermen through lower catches, and prompting the Hokkaido government to step up seal culling to reduce numbers.

But the receding sea ice could reverse that process, experts warn.

Spotted seals need the ice to give birth, spending two or three weeks on it from mid-March to look after their newborn pups. Poor quality or insufficient sea ice could reduce survival rates.

But the indirect implications of the ocean’s rapid warming could be even more serious, given the crucial role sea ice plays in nourishing the rich waters of the Sea of

Okhotsk, experts say.

In the spring, as the ice melts and sunlight hits the water, the sea blooms with phytoplankton, the anchor of marine life and the base of the ocean’s food web. These seas nourish not only seals and sea lions but whales and dolphins, scallop and crabs, and hundreds of species of fish, while its shores are home to many migratory and sea birds.

“Less sea ice arriving means less ice algae brought with it,” Kobayashi said. “I if global warming continues to intensify, in the long run I think they will face something of a crisis.”
