Q

uad Day is one of the most essential and hyped up events you’ll encounter during your first few days at the University and for good reason.

It’s a chance to get involved, make friends and put yourself out there among the 600-plus registered student organizations.

Among the large crowd and what should be a pretty active afternoon, you need to remember to take care of yourself — almost as if you’re heading into Lollapalooza.

A Quad Day survival guide, if you may.

Before

Before going to Quad Day, try and think about what really interests you and what you would like to dedicate time to. Gone are the

high school days of having time for four or more organizations while maintaining a high grade point average and a part-time job.

By focusing on what clubs you would like to join, you’ll feel a bit more prepared for the booths that are trying to recruit you.

With that being said, try not to get stuck in the mindset that you’re there to join one club and one club only.

Keep an open mind, put your name on a few email lists that seem cool and try it out.

It’s important to stay hydrated on your walk to the Main Quad and while you’re taking laps around the booths. It's never a good idea to be dehydrated the day before starting college courses.

If you get too hot, remember that the (air-conditioned) Illini Union is open (as well as several shops on Green Street) and has many places you can get a drink from and relax. It’s also a good place to go if you find yourself overwhelmed with all of the activity going on around you.

If you tend to get overwhelmed, go into Quad Day with a friend or ask some people in your residence hall to join you.

While you may not be interested in the same things, it’ll be nice to have someone to chat with about some of the more obscure clubs while you wait in line for things.

After

If you’re not already filled up from the free food samples around you, you can always debrief with friends over some frozen yogurt.

Try and think if there are any clubs that actually interested you, since having at least one extracurricular activity is good for both your social life and resume.

In a few days or weeks, your email will be filled with notices of meetings and gettogethers as the clubs start to become more active. Try and follow up now, since you’re less likely to join in the middle of the semester as your routine becomes more comfortable.

Go to a few meetings, talk to the members and eventually you’ll have found your place among the groups on campus.

By then, you should be a Quad Day pro.

Overpopulated.

These are the words I would use to describe my first Quad Day. Despite the downsides, I loved every second of playing a part in the typical scenes used in movies to paint the beginning of college and the next four years of one’s life.

If you're a freshman, it would be silly not to attend Quad Day. There is too much information, too many new friends and too many free things you would miss out on.

What’s not to love?

Despite the image of the Main Quad being transformed into a maze of chaos and claustrophobia slowly settling into your subconscious, Quad Day is an accurate representation of how many people attend our school — spoiler alert, it’s a lot.

The good thing is, you don’t need to stay there the whole time. Meander a little bit, look for free stuff and come up with a few clubs you think you might want to join.

There will be too many booths for you to stop at all of them and too many lists for you to write your brand new email address on, but quality typically tops quantity, and this is especially true for Quad Day. If you find something you’re interested in, take

the time to talk to the students running the booth and get a better idea of what it’s about. Then you’ll have a better idea of whether you actually want to take the time out of your first few weeks of college to sit in introductory meetings (that will probably offer free pizza) with a bunch of people you have never met before.

Maybe you don’t think you need to join any clubs.

That’s fine, just go to Quad Day for the "people watching" side of it. There will be dudes in Speedos repping the water polo club, people practicing martial arts and multiple dance troupes fighting for your attention as you pass them by.

I remember feigning interest in joining a sorority at the Greek life booths behind Foellinger (so technically not on the Main Quad) with my freshman year roommate. This was all for a cheap pair of sunglasses, but we were also surprised to find multiple fraternity house puppies sitting in the shade of booths at the time. Definitely a win-win. Neither my roommate nor I joined a sorority, but that’s the beauty of Quad Day — you aren’t required to commit to anything.

Take the hike out to Quad Day, even if it is just for a free pair of sunglasses from a sorority you won’t rush, because you never know what you’ll find or who you’ll meet.

Join intramural sports to make friends and stay active JESS PETERSON buzz editor

T

he University of Illinois is a Division I school, which means most of us probably will be occupying the bleachers rather than repping our school on courts or fields.

If you’re like me, being a part of a sports team was one of the best things about my high school experience. The beauty of it comes from the friendships that are made, the community that is built and the level of fitness you maintain. For me, running six days a week with teammates back in high school has proven to be much easier than going to the gym solo a couple times a week.

I’d argue that second to academics, mental and physical health is the most important aspect for a student to focus on while in college.

The easiest way for me to stay in shape is to work out with people I enjoy spending time with, not just being another face dripping with sweat on a stationary bike in CRCE. Luckily, the University is aware of this dilem-

ma and presents the perfect solution.

Club and intramural sports teams offer the opportunity to train year round with others who share the same passion for their favorite sport.

You can also grab your 10 closest friends and acquaintances and form your own team to compete against other students of varied skill levels.

The second semester of my freshman year, I joined my friend’s intramural soccer team. I hadn’t played since the second grade, and had a specific dislike for running around a field chasing after a ball that I was terrified of being hit in the face with.

But my friend needed more girls to join her team, so I obliged, and less than a week later we were standing on the athletic fields next to the ARC. It became much more difficult to conceal the fact that I had no idea what I was doing.

Needless to say, soccer still isn’t my favorite, but I loved being on the team because it let me be a part of something. It also helped me schedule regular times to work out and have study

breaks during the week in a way that was not as painful as trudging to one of the workout centers by myself.

My current schedule isn’t flexible enough to allow me to pursue club sports, but I know students who have met some of their best friends on those teams, love having a chance to get away from campus some weekends to compete, and also manage to stay in great shape without relying on their own discipline to form a training schedule.

Sure, you may not be the star of a team or the face of Illinois Athletics, but club and intramural sports remove any pressure you may have felt, anywhere from Little League Baseball to your high school state cross country meet. These groups allow you to get together, burn off calories and steam and make friends.

But the most important fact, similar to anything you commit extended amounts of your time to, is they’ll enable you to have a good time.

Just remember to have fun and go get 'em, tiger.

Q

uad Day is one of the biggest events of the year, and navigating the hundreds of clubs and thousands of people can seem daunting to both freshmen and returning students. Here are some tips to help you cruise through Quad Day like a pro.

Study the map

This may very well be your first assignment in college and how well you study will determine your success.

The Illini Union offers a regular and interactive map on its website. You can search for an organization by name and find its exact location, or you can get an idea about where different types of registered student organizations are located.

The social fraternities and sororities are behind Foellinger Hall. The rest of the RSOs are located between Foellinger and the Union. There are ath-

letic, pre-professional, religious, political, cultural and all sorts of other clubs and organizations to explore, all organized by type for convenience.

Be prepared

Quad Day is known to be incredibly hot, likely because of the sheer number of people. Make sure you have plenty of water and stay hydrated. Sunscreen and a hat are also good to have. If it looks like it might rain, bring an umbrella.

You will get a ton of free stuff: coupons, frisbees, pens, coasters, pins, stickers, bags, cups, T-shirts and more. It’s like Halloween in August.

People will be throwing stuff at you left and right.

Bring a bag, or three, to store all of your goodies in.

Prioritize

You only have four hours and you are bound to get distracted. Instead of blindly going in, prioritize the sections you want to check out and plan a path to take. Be smart about the organizations you want to join and

Go alone

It’s comforting to have a friend or travel in packs, especially as a freshman, but Quad Day is best conquered alone.

There are too many people to push through with a group. Also, you and your

friends are bound to have different interests.

You may want to explore the Greek system or sports, while they may be interested in the cultural RSOs. Quad Day is a time to reflect on what you want your college experience to be like. Go solo and be thorough.

Get help

If you have a question or you are feeling incredibly lost, there will be people handing out maps by Foellinger and the Union. If you have a question about a specific club, ask the people at the booth because they’ll love explaining more about their club. There will also be a first-aid tent, should you need it.

Have fun

The overwhelming atmosphere, the excitement, the getting lost — it’s all a part of the Quad Day experience. Don’t stress, meet new people, get free stuff and have a blast.

you’re strol ling through the Main Quad looking at different booths, it may not occur to you that clubs you join could drastically change who you will become within the next four years of college.

I definitely did not feel that way about The Daily Illini. When I joined at the beginning of my sophomore year, I wasn’t sure it would be a good fit for me.

I had just changed out of a major that wasn’t right for me. I was looking for a fresh start.

Before the first week of school, one of my friends told me that we could get extra credit for one of our classes if we wrote for The Daily Illini — I’m not one to turn down extra credit.

On Quad Day, it took a while to find the booth.

With over 1,000 registered

student organizations on campus, the Main Quad was filled with booths geared toward professional goals to booths that were just plain silly.

Once I finally found the stand for The Daily Illini, I talked to some of the people there and decided that it was something that I would want to try out. I was never into journalism in high school, but I loved to write, so I thought that maybe I could be good at it.

Then I came to the first meeting where I decided to write for the Life & Culture section. At first I was confused and scared of messing up. I had never written an article before, what if I did something wrong?

But soon I started to learn the ropes of journalism. I began to enjoy talking to different people and writing about what I learned from them.

I looked forward to the weekly meetings, knowing that I could ask my peers for advice on the stories I

was writing.

Slowly, my articles became more detailed and my word choice became more intricate. I began to pick up stories that I was not only interested in, but also passionate about.

The next semester, I looked for a leadership position and even ended up becoming an editor, something I never would have expected looking around at booths on Quad Day. It was at The Daily Illini that I developed my love for journalism.

The Daily Illini helped me discover that this was what I want to do with my life.

So when you’re looking around on Quad Day, keep an open mind and try stepping out of your comfort zone.

Whether it’s Greek life, a club sport or even a wacky club, you may find that it’s home, and you may even become a leader.

a freshman at Quad Day, I was entranced by the sheer number of organizations I could join in a variety of topics.

Walking around the Main Quad, shuffling through thousands of other hot, sweaty students to snag that free pen or frisbee, I was ready to sign up for more groups than I could count.

I thought joining multiple groups would give me a balanced college experience — and in part, I was right. Some registered student organizations are more career focused and they can give you many skills you can use in the future. In these groups, it’s easy to find like-minded students who can inspire you to follow your passions and form networking connections in the future.

There are other RSOs that focus on community service and philanthropy. On my first Quad Day, I was so impressed to see how University students give back to the Champaign-Urbana community and people across the globe. The groups focus on issues including fighting child hunger, increasing literacy and helping those with disabilities.

On top of that, there are groups on campus that are simply lots of fun to join. Whether students are interested in music, theater, snowboarding or vir-

tually any other activity, they are able to find others with the same hobby.

On Quad Day, it is easy to get swept up in the excitement and sign up for information on many groups. This is good, as it can allow students to test out multiple groups and see where they best fit.

It is important to remember, though, that once Quad Day is over, a new semester of classes starts the next morning.

For freshmen, this can mean the first time they are faced with a collegelevel workload, which will likely be significantly more difficult than the coursework in high school.

Additionally, there are the added challenges of adapting to large lecture hall classes and making time to attend office hours, finish homework or studying for an exam.

Even returning students are sometimes required to decide whether they can balance added RSO involvement with their studies. Upper level classes may require more work, and older students working on a thesis or Capstone project may suddenly find themselves buried in research or paper writing.

When the first meetings for all of the RSOs come around — generally in the first few weeks of school — remember that the semester is not as long as it seems, and busy weeks of homework and exams are not too far away.

Personally, I like to enter the important dates for all of my classes into my calendar as soon as I get the course syllabus. This

allows me to see when I will be the busiest during the semester. While I can’t always rearrange my RSO commitments to avoid those times, it is nice to have a heads up and avoid optional events during those weeks.

Extracurricular activities are beneficial because they allow students to pursue interests outside of the classroom, but they should not hold a new student hostage to a packed schedule.

Freshmen, if you find yourself overwhelmed, reevaluate how many RSOs you can balance with your coursework.

If you find yourself miserable because you are running from meeting to meeting every night, prioritize which RSOs you find most enjoyable or will benefit you in the future.

Talk to the leader of your RSOs and see if there is a strategy to managing your time better. Many groups will have options for members to attend some events and not others, or to step back from responsibilities for a short period of time.

Because RSOs are led by students, they will likely understand that you are overwhelmed and academics come first. Open communication will help balance your responsibilities, and giving leaders prior notification keeps them from thinking you are ghosting the group.

Don’t run yourself to the point of exhaustion just because you put your email on a list on Quad Day.

New UI administration in place DAILY ILLINI STAFF REPORT

Several changes to the University’s appointments have been made since the Board of Trustees met on July 13.

At the Chicago meeting, the board approved Danita Brown Young as the new vice chancellor of student affairs, replacing Renee Romano. James Anderson was named as dean of the College of Education after serving as the interim dean for the past year.

At the meeting, Chief Financial Officer Walter Knorr gave his final finan-

cial update to the board before his Aug. 31 retirement. The presentation came shortly after Illinois legislatures passed the state's first budget since 2015.

Funds for the Monetary Award Program, or MAP grants, were approved for 2017 and 2018, along with a $583 million budget. The funds are 10 percent less than what was allotted two years ago.

Six days after the meeting, University President Timothy Killeen named Avijit Ghosh as the Univer-

sity’s interim chief financial officer.

Ghosh, a long-time University employee, begins his new role on Sept. 1, but the decision is pending formal approval from the Board of Trustees. Their next session takes place Sept. 7.

While Ghosh serves, a University advisory committee will be searching for a permanent CFO replacement.

On July 21, Governor Bruce Rauner appointed Stuart King, the first local representative to the Board of Trustees in over a decade.

King, an alumnus and past University employee, lives in Champaign and is a practicing physician at the Christie Clinic.

King received his B.A., M.A. and MBA from Illinois, highlighting his long history with the University.

Additionally, King served as the interim assistant dean of Clinical and Academic Affairs at the University’s College of Medicine.

Two puppies recruited as Illini Service Dogs

The Illini Service Dogs recently welcomed two new additions to its team.

The puppies, both of which are 10-week-old labrador retrievers, are named Alma and Newman.

These puppies will undergo a one-and-a-half to two year training period in which they will learn over 50 commands, including turning on and off lights, opening doors, picking up objects, helping someone walk and pulling wheelchairs, in order to assist people with disabilities.

They also learn etiquette and manners for various environments in order to effectively accompany their handlers to places such as college lectures, movie theaters and sporting events.

“The Illini Service Dogs started with a girl, a dog and a dream,” said CEO Bridget Evans. “When I was a student at the U of I, I proposed the idea of having college students foster and train service dogs for people with physical disabilities.”

Founded in 2010, The Illini Service Dogs was the first group in the U.S. to provide college students with the opportunity to train mobil-

ity service dogs. These crucial services are available at no cost, thanks to fundraising donations and dedicated volunteers.

“We believe that through community education, advocating for disability rights and providing service dogs 100 percent free of charge, we are making the world a better place,” Evans said.

Evans was inspired to start this organization through her own experience.

After spending years on various waiting lists for service dog organizations, she decided to train her own service dog named Coal.

“By the time I went to college, I had helped train over 20 service dogs and I realized that I needed more people to be engaged,” Evans said. “I found myself surrounded by people that wanted to help. Last year, we had over 1,700 people sign up on Quad Day to help train service dogs for people with disabilities.”

Alma and Newman are just the newest dogs to help make this mission a reality.

They were acquired through a donation by the Lindeen family and Lisa Huizenga, the dogs’ Colorado-based breeder, in memory of two University alumni.

“It was through the generous support of the Lindeen family that we were able to add these smart puppies into our training program,” Evans said.

For those eager to meet these two puppies, Alma and Newman will be in attendance at the Illini Service Dogs booth during Quad Day on Aug. 27, alongside the other service dogs in training.

The puppies will also participate in the “Pet-a-Pup” event that takes place at the start of the fall semester and will stay on campus as they

learn their new skills.

When seeing the Illini Service Dogs in training around campus, always remember to ask their handler for permission, Evans said.

“They’ll let the dogs greet new friends,” she said.

New fitness group aims to empower women

CHAARG, a women-centric fitness group sweeping the nation, just made its way to the University of Illinois.

The University’s chapter was created by Amanda Gade, senior in Education.

She’s currently the chapter’s ambassador.

Since its inception in spring, CHAARG Illinois has recruited 100 members. The group, whose name stands for Changing Health, Attitudes, and Actions to Recreate Girls, seeks to advocate a holistic approach to fitness, while recognizing that both exercise and nutrition entail very different things for different people.

Rather than advocating a singular model for what CHAARG’s members should strive for in their workout goals, CHAARG teaches women to work toward becoming healthier and stronger, whatever that means for each individual, in order to achieve greater happiness and confidence, Gade said.

“Our goal is for every girl to grow into her happiest self, to have confidence in her capabilities and to take care of herself,” Gade said.

“At our age, I think that it can sometimes be easy to fall victim to our insecurities because we are still learning to love ourselves and growing into the people that we want to be.

CHAARG does an amazing job of empowering every member who is a part of it to embrace who they are and to love themselves.”

In addition, CHAARG aims to do away with the notion that fitness is primarily an interest for men.

Women often feel discouraged from going to the gym, simply because it can be an uncomfortable space for them, and CHAARG seeks to make it known that women deserve a comfortable, welcoming environment in which they can reach their health goals.

Its members encourage women to engage with various forms of exercise, from

CHAARG members participate in weekly classes to connect members and improve confidence. power lifting to yoga, martial arts to aerial fitness, and so much more. They preach that exercise should be fun and interesting and that women shouldn’t feel confined to the elliptical.

Targeting 250 members total, there is still room for growth in the Illinois chapter. For those interested in becoming involved with CHAARG’s Illinois chapter, memberships may be purchased at $45 per semester through CHAARG’s website.

The price comes along with a supportive womencentered fitness network, as well as CHAARG’s many membership benefits, such as Studio Spotlights.

Held every Wednesday in two sessions, from 6 to 7 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m., Studio Spotlights feature workout sessions with numerous local fitness instructors, each specializing in distinct kinds of workout activities. Members also have the opportunity to travel with these instructors to studios.

The initial workouts include yoga with Iyengar

Yoga, karate with Dragon Claw Academy and aerial fundamentals with Defy Gravity.

Since the Illinois chapter is already comprised of 100 members, and projected to almost triple, there are smaller groups within the main body.

These small groups, consisting of about 10 to 15 members, are led by two coordinators and help create a sense of community within the larger chapter.

CHAARG was founded in 2012 to help eradicate the societal pressure that women face over their appearances, and currently has 51 university chapters. Its mission is to foster a loving and supportive community of women in fitness, regardless of body type, fitness level and experience.

“Everyone just accepts you and wants to see you succeed and be happy,” Gade said. “When I joined, I had no idea the impact that it would have on me and I am so unbelievably excited to watch every single one of our members be changed by

the organization.”

The sense of solidarity that is established through a women-centric group has had a positive impact on CHAARG’s members.

Emily Naud, freshman in FAA, said, “Being a part of a community like this has shown me that everyone has their own struggles, whatever those may be. I have learned that exercise can and should be fun!”

S i m i l a r l y, Jen n a Lemenager, vice president of media and sophomore in ACES, conveyed the ways in which CHAARG has been beneficial for her.

“Rather than letting a number on the scale dictate the foods I eat or the distance I run, I’ve become so much more accepting of my body shape and size,” Lemenager said. “CHAARG has also boosted my confidence levels both in and out of the gym because for the first time in a long time, I finally feel comfortable in my own skin.”

While members connect in their smaller groups, there’s also the opportuni-

ty for them to reach out on a national basis. CHAARG hosts a number of events across the nation, such as FitPlans, which are online workout plans, in which over 2,000 women participate annually.

There is also a handful of national retreats and workshops that take place throughout the year.

Gade recently went to one in northern Michigan, where she and the others who participated stayed in cabins and learned about leadership.

CHAARG highly emphasizes the importance of their Instagram community. Out of the 51 chapters throughout the U.S., thousands of women make CHAARG Instagram — the handles begin with their name, and end with _inCHAARG — accounts to document their progress and establish a network of support within their community.

“I can be having a stressful day and go on my CHAARG Instagram account and instantly feel so much happier because of

the positivity that radiates from everyone,” Gade said.

“The Instagram accounts are a big part of CHAARG because they help create the amazing community that CHAARG is.”

She also made a point to note that she posts about both fruit smoothies and doughnuts on her page.

Lemenager, too, voiced the ways in which the CHAARG Instagram community has inspired and supported her.

“The best social media platform for CHAARG girls to connect is through our #inCHAARG Instagrams.

I’ve found this to be my best source of inspiration and a great accountability tactic so I will continue to work toward my goals,” Lemenager said.

“CHAARG is such a large organization with so many members, but it’s such a tight-knit community of women who always have encouragement, an inspiring story, a recipe and more to share.”

W

ith the fall semester closing in, registered student organizations at the University invite students to yet another highly anticipated Quad Day. Quad Day provides students and faculty the chance to view and participate in the diverse collection of student-led groups.

However, Quad Day’s true audience is the incoming freshmen who look to quickly assimilate into the University.

At fi rst glance, Quad Day is fairly overwhelming with the normally long, open and green field covered with students and booths. It also seems like the entirety of the school is present, walking about and bumping elbows. In my own experience, I faced a lot of anxiety going through every booth because everyone offered something new and I wanted to join basically everything.

But slowly, I put certain RSOs above others because I was thinking about what would help me in the long run. I had various interests and passions that I wanted to continue but I didn’t think it would

help me as much as joining RSOs that helped me academically and career-wise.

A common mindset among many freshmen coming into the event is to put their email addresses down on as many sign up sheets as possible in order to broaden their interests and become involved in their educations. But approaching Quad Day with the intent of simply “resume boosting” is only going to inhibit their careers in extracurriculars.

Resume boosting is basically joining RSOs that will look good on one’s resume, without there being a genuine interest and desire to succeed in that RSO. Students need to participate in groups they’re passionate about and will be able to succeed in by pushing themselves for constant success rather than simply doing a bunch of things to put on their resume that look good on paper.

RSOs are what make this University so amazing, with over 1,000 choices, each one distinct from the other, and students need to take advantage of that. Balancing academic RSOs with social RSOs is a great strategy when approaching the college experience. It’s important to expose one-

self to the competitive job world by joining a business group or an engineering group. However, being swamped with all of that as well as classes will create a chaotic academic life for a student. By also being involved in a social group, like a sport or hobby, students can take a break from the vigorous coursework.

The biggest mistake a freshman can make, however, is not joining anything at all and simply focusing on classes. RSOs

are essential to being social and fi nding your place at school. By not participating in any, you limit how far you can network.

Taking Quad Day step by step and actually talking to the students involved gives a great idea of what that RSO is about because the passion in the group is directly shown in the involved student’s attitude.

Most RSOs are friendly and allow students to come to several meetings to get a feel for things.

Like syllabus week, many RSOs start out by simply introducing new members to the group and easing them into how things work.

Certain RSOs seem super exciting at fi rst, but sometimes it turns out they're not after attending a few meetings. That situation is felt by almost every student at some point. Facing that simply means you go back to all of the other RSOs you can choose from.

sity staple and with all of the things you can do and all of the people you can meet, it’s truly an all-inone showcase of the college experience. Go out and meet people, join things you’re interested in or join things you have no idea about.

Regardless, as long as students are approaching it with the proper mindset, they are bound to have fun.

RSO presidents speak out about leadership experiences Walking into Quad Day as a freshman can be a very overwhelming task. Hundreds of booths line the sidewalks of the Main Quad, each one representing a completely different organization on campus.

Sorority women parade their house's T-shirts, restaurant employees hand out coupons and registered student organizations exhibit unique ways to promote their organization to prospective members. From the Adventure Club to the Student Council, there are endless options and hundreds of opportunities to choose from.

It is not hard to understand why this is a seemingly daunting endeavor.

As an incoming freshman, Anna Maturski did not think she would one day become the president of Big Brother Big Sister UIUC. As she approached the RSO’s booth on Quad Day in 2015, the idea of one day being a leader seemed so far away.

Today, Maturski is a junior in Education and the president of Big Brother Big Sister UIUC. Maturski is a leader to more than 30 members in her growing RSO. She said she feels it is important for all incoming freshmen to sign up for a few different RSOs on Quad Day and get involved right away.

Maturski also said it is a good idea to begin building your resume at the start of your college career, instead of waiting until it’s too late.

Without the courage to join Big Brother Big Sister UIUC two years ago, Maturski would not be in the leadership position she is today.

Maturski decided the RSO was perfect for her because it peaked her interest and diversified her portfolio.

“You have a hobby and you’re doing something other than studying,” Maturski said. “You can be on a committee, you can be on (the executive board). It definite-

ly bumps up your resume.”

Sam Fishman, sophomore in Education, became president of Autism Speaks as a freshman. More specifically, Fishman is the reason Autism Speaks made its return to campus last year.

Autism Speaks is an RSO with a mission to “increase understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder.” In addition, Autism Speaks aims to study the causes of autism and connect with families affected by the disorder.

“My job has been starting it back up again and finding officers to fulfill the different roles,” Fishman said.

“I’ve been in constant contact with the nationals office just to go over what needs to be done and it’s a new situation. I’ve never started up an RSO, obviously because last year was my first year.”

Fishman came to the University with the hopes of joining an RSO that directly connected to his major — special education.

He never expected to become an officer during his freshman year, let alone becoming the founding president of the Illinois chapter.

The RSO still does not have a faculty sponsor but they hope to find one this year. So far, Fishman’s biggest struggle has been the lack of older leadership and guidance through hard times. He was able to get in contact with the RSO’s former president when Autism Speaks was on campus before to get some helpful advice.

Fishman said this experience has taught him a lot about how to be a leader, and showed that it’s possible to take on large leadership roles at a young age.

“There’s still going to be surprises around the corner and you’ve just got to work around those," Fishman said. "It’s been a very positive experience so far so I’m very happy with it."

bers, but Fishman said he hopes to recruit about 20 more by the end of fall semester.

Autism Speaks will have a Quad Day booth. Fishman hopes to show incoming freshmen, along with the rest of the student body, just what Autism Speaks does for the community.

“I want people to know what autism is and about how truly cool people with autism are and what they bring to society,” Fishman said. “What we’re going to do as a chapter at Illinois is raise awareness for people with autism. Just to show

which means she hosts trunk shows around campus.

“Freshman year, I was just so focused on trying to get used to everything and I knew I wanted to join an RSO,” Letourneau said. “I didn’t know I was going to be able to have such a strong leadership position so early on and I’m so excited that I did.

It’s something that I love to do and I’m going to continue the rest of the time I’m at U of I.” Letourneau said it was important to her to join an RSO that allowed her to give back to the community and

at the same time gave her some experience working with children.

Being a new RSO, Letourneau understood there would be many opportunities to grow in leadership within Headbands for Hope as well.

“I think it’s important because it’s a great way to not get stuck in your bubble, and be able to impact and make a difference through others,” Letourneau said.

Just like Fishman, Nicole Letourneau, junior in Education, played a pivotal role in her RSO's campus image.

Letourneau is the president of Headbands for Hope, which is currently entering its second year on campus.

Headbands for Hope is an organization that sells headbands to students and community members.

For each headband sold, another headband is donated to a child with cancer.

Letourneau is not only president of the RSO but a “Headband Hero” as well,

I-Guides make a mark on campus Move In Day OLIVIA BIEVENUE Staff writer

M

ove In Day can be long, frustrating, stressful and a little bittersweet as summer comes to an end. Especially for students new to the University, the traffic and crowded campus can be quite overwhelming.

To make the day more bearable for everyone, some University students volunteer their time as I-Guides. The tradition of students serving as I-Guides and assisting with move-in began in 1947, making it one of the longest lasting student-run organizations on campus.

I-Guides do a variety of jobs during move-in, including greeting students and parents, unloading vehicles, directing traffic and making new students feel comfortable on their first day of college.

Jonathan Nguyen, junior in Engineering, was an I-Guide last year and is returning as an I-Guide this year. Nguyen said one of his favorite parts of the job is the influence that comes with it.

Because of a good movein experience his freshman year, Nguyen was inspired to help others have a good experience as well.

“What I really liked about being an I-Guide is helping people out. Giving incoming first students a really good impression of University,” Nguyen said. “When I moved in my freshman year my I-Guides were very friendly and really helpful, so I just wanted to do the same for other people.”

Being an I-Guide is not only a good opportunity to volunteer and gain leadership experience, but also a way to earn other benefits.

I-Guides move in a day early in order to avoid all traffic and crowds during general move in. Students

Josh Gitogo, sophomore in Business, has been an I-Guide for the past two years. Gitogo volunteered at Snyder Hall last year, which was also where he lived. He said helping students out on Move-In Day allowed him to make friends with the people he lived with.

“Immediately I was able to recognize a bunch of faces those first couple weeks. I made some friends through the I-Guides we were working with,” Gitogo said. “It was just really cool helping people move in, and then living with them for the whole year, so it’s a good way to meet new people.”

more in LAS, was also an I-Guide last year. She also said one of the best parts about being an I-Guide was meeting so many people and being able to help them.

“I can remember specific people that I talked to that I moved in,” Whitfield said. “Everybody was different. Everybody was interesting. It’s just really cool.”

Whitfield said she recommends the I-Guide program to anyone that can do it, because it’s a unique and fun experience that comes with many perks and nearly no downsides.

“You get to meet all sorts of new people, whether they’re the people you’re working with or the people you’re moving in,” Whitfield said. “You relate to everybody. You share

something with everybody that you’re moving in.”

In fact, Whitfield enjoyed being an I-Guide so much that she became a hall coordinator this year, which is a leadership position related to the I-Guide program.

“I was like, ‘Well, if I could help organize that or help in this process in any way I would love to do that,’” Whitfield said. “If I didn’t get this position I would have loved to volunteer just to be an I-Guide again.”

Students agree that the aspect of volunteering seems to make the I-Guide program so enjoyable. Whitfield believes that because students are choosing to give up their time, the atmosphere on Move-In Day is positive and rewarding.

“Everyone’s always really happy and really positive. Like last year it was so hot and everybody was sweating, but everybody was so happy,” Whitfield said.

The process to become an I-Guide is simple. Students can sign up online and can choose when they want to assist with movein. The job is fairly simple and anyone is eligible to sign up.

Gitogo said although anyone can be an I-Guide, people who are extroverted and enjoy talking to other people tend to make the best guides.

“You really just have to be friendly and open to talking to people,” Gitogo said. “Of course since a lot of the people are new to campus, they don’t know where things are and the

parents don’t know where things are, so being able to stay calm in chaos is one of the biggest things.”

Gitogo also said one thing people can forget is that the students are only volunteers and do not receive any compensation for being I-Guides. While move-in day can be stressful, I-Guides do their best to help make the students’ and parents’ day as easy as possible.

“Sometimes people might ask you a question and you don’t know,” Gitogo said. “Then they kind of get grumpy because they see you in the shirt and they think it’s super official, but we’re all just students helping people move in. We don’t always know everything.”

Panhellenic council members share advice about recruitment

Whether it's on the way to the gym, class or to grab a coffee, Greek life is an overwhelming presence on campus.

The size of the University’s Greek system has made letters a staple of so many students’ wardrobes, but behind each lettered apparel is a woman who joined a sorority for her own reasons by going through the recruitment process.

As the beginning of the new school year approaches, many women on campus will get ready for recruitment, which starts Sept. 7.

Madison Ellin, Panhellenic vice president of recruitment, said when she first transferred to the University, she found herself debating whether or not to rush.

In fact, she did not sign up for rush until the last day of registration. Now, Ellin said she is so glad she chose to go through the recruitment process.

She also said she has encountered opportunities such as being members of various executive boards because of her initial decision to rush. “To women who are on the fence about recruitment, I would say there is no harm in giving it a try,� Ellin said. “If after the process you decide it isn’t for you, that is completely OK. But, like in my case, you might be happily surprised where it takes you.�

Along with recruitment comes many stories from women on campus who have already been initiated into their houses.

While the recruitment horror stories might be the most popularly shared around campus, there are more success stories than not and there are also various resources available to help women through the rush process.

There are many reasons girls choose to rush, ranging from the potential for leadership opportunities to meeting other women on campus.

Alison Owczarski, Panhellenic vice president of operations, said she joined a sorority to make a giant campus feel smaller and to be part of a tight-knit organization. “I was very stressed when I went through recruitment, so I wish I had relaxed more and focused on having fun," Owczarski said. “People always say that you end up where you belong and that is the truth. In the end, everything will work out."

Owczarski is not alone in her feelings throughout the recruitment process.

Ellin experienced the same feelings during her own recruitment process. “I remember at my first chapter I was so nervous,�

Ellin said.

"I cracked the water cup I was given and spilled it all over the chapter member I was talking to. I was so embarrassed but she made me feel comfortable about the whole thing and we laughed it off for the rest of the event.�

After a while, Ellin said she was able to calm down and realized that recruitment isn't as intimidating as it may seem. She said she learned to have fun with the

Marissa Sulek, Panhellenic president, wrote in an email that her most vivid memory from recruitment was the last day before Bid Day when she had to make a decision about which house to preference. “I was beyond torn and completely indecisive with which chapter to select. I soon realized I was one of the few left in Foellinger and I needed to make a decision fast,�

Sulek said.

Whether a woman rushing feels the pressure during the first round of recruitment or after the last round, it is a completely natural feeling and something most potential new members go through.

the most pleasant and enjoyable experience possible for both the women rushing and the women who are already members of Greek houses.

This year, they have instituted a few changes in the scheduling of several days during rush. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are now two days of first invitational which has previously only been one day. This round has historically been the longest day of recruitment and voted the least favorite by chapter members and potential new members," Ellin said.

"We decided to break it up into two days to hopefully make it a better experience for all women involved."

Another big change is that a new house, Phi Mu, has joined

campus and will now be part of formal recruitment. Owczarski said this is an exciting change because new members now have the chance to join a whole new house on campus.

One of the overriding pieces of advice that Sulek, Owczarski and Ellin all had was that women entering the recruitment process need to go in with an open mind and forget about any stereotypes they may have heard about any house. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Prior to recruitment, everyone told me to keep an open mind,â&#x20AC;? Sulek wrote. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I chose to not listen to this advice and had tunnel vision during my recruitment process. Long story short, if you don't stay optimistic about

what each chapter has to offer, recruitment will be quite difficult.â&#x20AC;?

The beginning of the new school year is an exciting, and possibly overwhelming time, but recruitment does not have to be a nightmare for any potential new members to any of the Greek houses on campus.

Cross country recruits bring positive energy

Corbin takes on leadership role

Reggie Corbin is only a sophomore.

However, with the influx of talented running backs joining the team, Corbin has now taken a larger leadership role for the younger players.

T he depa r t ure of Ke’Shawn Vaughn gave Corbin more touches last year.

Kendrick Foster was used as the primary back, but the two players were given opportunities to make an impact in the running game.

Corbin played in all 12 games last season, starting two of them. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Corbin ran for 523 yards and two touchdowns on 86 carries in 2016.

But this season, Corbin and Foster may not be the only Illini running backs getting the ball from quarterback Chayce Crouch.

Running back Mike Epstein signed with the Illini in February. The Fort Lauderdale, Florida, native said he understands the large amount of talented running backs on the team but wants to focus on his strengths to help create his identity within the system.

“I see myself as being very versatile, getting myself in the open space a lot,” Epstein said. “Whenever I get the ball, I can just do my thing and take over.”

Along with Epstein, freshman Ra’Von Bonner will be in the mix for carries in offensive coordinator Garrick McGee’s system.

Injury-ridden sophomore Dre Brown rounds out the five running backs for the Illini heading into the season. The Illinois coaching staff has not seen what Brown can do in real games yet, but the 2015 threestar recruit hopes to stay

healthy and contribute to the offense.

Corbin said he does not feel uncomfortable, as an underclassman, having Epstein and Bonner look up to him.

“In the offseason, I’ve seen the two of them both care about the sport,” Corbin said. “It’s rare to see young guys come in and be fully focused on football and things like that because you’re in college for the first time, you’re away from home. But their care for the game and their ability to catch on fast really surprised me and is a great sign for them doing great things.”

Former Illinois running back Josh Ferguson gave Corbin, who redshirted the 2015 season, advice on how to set a good example for his teammates.

Ferguson is now in the Indianapolis Colts organization and received playing

time as a backup running back for the team last year.

Corbin said he admired Ferguson’s work ethic and that he wants to give as much of what Ferguson taught him to his teammates this year. “ N o t h i n g ’s r e a l ly changed (with my approach to leading),” Corbin said.

“I’m still trying to lead by example and do things right and take what Josh Ferguson taught me and try to teach it to them.”

Corbin figures to be an integral part of the offense this year. He said he has been working on any weaknesses he sees in his game, such as breakaway speed and putting on more weight in the offseason.

Fans will see who receives the brunt of the carries when Illinois faces Ball State on Sept. 2 at Memorial Stadium.

Following this summer’s program makeover, the women’s cross country team is welcoming eight new faces to its fall roster.

The mixture of talent is poised to become the foundation for Illinois’ distance program.

“This class was put together as a fundamental piece moving forward as a program,” said distance coach Jake Stewart. “These girls are able to function at a high level. Hopefully we’ll have future classes each year that will surround the girls with a high skill level.”

The bulk of freshman runners decided to attend Illinois following an announcement last November stating the “men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field and men’s and women’s cross country will be led by a single coaching staff,” for the 2017-18 seasons per the Illinois Athletic Department.

Program reorganization was spearheaded by new head coach Mike Turk, who replaced former head coach Ron Garner. Former Purdue and Dayton track and field coach Sarah Haveman joined the program as an assistant coach alongside former volunteer assistant Jake Cohen.

The overhaul is a welcomed change, however, said senior Denise Branch.

“So far this year it’s been a real joy,” Branch said.

“Last year it was hard to be at practice, and there was a lot of tension in the air, a lot of people didn’t know how to act. It felt hard to commit to something you knew was going to end.”

This year’s ensuing practices were laden with “good vibes” and a very different level of energy. A more positive environment works as a magnetic force that attracts athletes to Illinois, Branch said.

“This year’s class of 2018

were recruited a lot based off of names of athletes that are here already,” Stewart said. “Athletes surrounded by other really good athletes is how we want our program to look, and not only that, we want them to keep bringing positive chemistry in.”

Branch also noted that the camaraderie between the team, Haveman and Stewart is synonymous with the program’s fresh start.

“Coach Stewart and coach Haveman are awesome together and balance each other out,” Branch said. “I think a lot of people don’t realize the importance of having a female coach, because it gives you someone to relate to.”

The Illini clocked a 14th place finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional last fall after a 10th place finish the year before.

Two of last year’s top scorers, including Branch, will return to the course this season.

According to Stewart, Illini veterans will aim on overall improvement while guiding a younger, more inexperienced group.

“This year we’re increasing the intensity, but it’s nothing anyone can’t handle,” Stewart said. “We have older girls to set examples, but it’s far too early to see what we’re going to have as far as race placement. We have 20 women on the team and we’re all on a learning curve right now.”

Members of Illinois’ new, younger layer have already stepped up, Branch said.

In lieu of her senior season, Branch reflected on the security of the newly minted program.

“Once I leave, the program will be in good hands,” Branch said. “(We) have to be consistent and do everything we need to do and the rest will fall into place.”

to turn around the school’s major programs. His first move, and I mean literally his first move, was firing Bill Cubit and hiring Lovie Smith. Immediately, Illinois football was back on the map. After another disappointing season for basketball, Whitman fired Groce and brought in Brad Underwood as the new head coach.

Both sports are a long way from the top. They are both projects. Both teams are extremely young. Both new coaches have shown they can recruit big players in the state. Smith coached through last year with the hand he was dealt. The Illini did not do well, finishing with a 3-9 record. But now, after a full off season of recruiting, it is Smith’s turn to start stacking the deck.

Due to the lack of experience in both programs, neither me, nor my brother will likely see them go too far. But I think when he is in my shoes as a senior, he will be able to confidently argue his teams are just as good as his friends’ teams, or even better.

By then, Smith will have a roster full of players hand-

picked specifically for his system, and Underwood’s now-promising freshmen — like Mark Smith and Trent Frazier — will be veterans that are playing with the top teams in the Big Ten. My little brother and all of the other underclassmen will get the perks of watching both the process and the finished product of both of these programs. I hope they don’t take the experience for granted. I saw this campus go through the lows for both programs. I never got to see the highs. The underclassmen will see the process, and I can speak for that part.

It has been fun to watch so far, but I would give anything to be able to see the finished product through the eyes of a student and not an old alumni.

In a couple of years, my brother will take the place of my friends that go to Alabama, Kentucky and Ole Miss, telling me about how his basketball and football teams are way better than the ones that were there when I went to school.

Illinois head football coach Lovie Smith said at Big Ten Media Days that Chayce Crouch will start the season as quarterback for the Illini.

Smith said he enjoys the energy Crouch brings to the team, but he needs to be smart about the ways he uses it.

“Well, first off, he needs to learn how to slide,” Smith said. “But really excited about what he’ll bring throwing the football (as a) dual athlete. He is the undisputed leader on the team.”

In 2015, Crouch saw action in seven games, totaling 160 yards and two touchdowns through the air. He added 96 yards on the ground.

Crouch played in four games last year, starting in one. The junior led Illinois to a road win against Rutgers last season, throwing for 61 yards and a touchdown.

Wes Lunt was under center for a majority of the snaps last year for the Illini and primarily served as a pocket passer. Lunt threw for 5,900 yards and 36 touchdowns during his career at Illinois. Illinois’ offense will look different this year with a dualthreat quarterback leading the way.

Crouch’s best statistical game came in a loss to Purdue last season. Crouch compiled 137 yards and two touchdowns on the ground and 142 yards through the air. Lunt’s longest rush of his career, meanwhile, was 14 yards.

The junior quarterback will have more opportunities to find receivers with the return of an injury-plagued Mike Dudek and Malik Turner, who is coming back for his senior season.

Illinois also added wide receiver depth with the signings of Ricky Smalling and Carmoni Green in the past year. Both players were three-star recruits coming out of high school, according to 247sports.

Crouch will lead an Illini team that won three games last year.

His first big tests as the undisputed starter will be against Western Kentucky and South Florida in the early non-conference slate — both teams won 10 games last season.

Breaking down the Illinois basketball schedule THOMAS POLCYN Staff writer

As students return to campus and the start of class draws near, so does the start of a new era of Illinois basketball.

After firing former head coach John Groce and bringing in Brad Underwood, the Illini are ready to turn the page and return to competing with toplevel programs.

With that being said, the full schedule has been released, so let’s take a look at what we can expect from the Illini this upcoming season.

Non-conference

As a whole, this year’s non-conference schedule is pretty weak. It features multiple games against smaller schools such as Southern University, Tennessee-Martin, North Carolina Central and more.

This could come back to hurt the Illini if they end up on the bubble when March rolls around, but I honestly think it is a smart move.

With Underwood coming in and teaching a whole new system, it could take some time for the team to make the proper adjustments and effectively play in the new system. Games against lesser competition will allow them the time needed to adjust and prepare for a tough Big Ten slate.

Also, it’s worth noting that not the entire schedule is filled with weaker opponents. Three non-conference games that really stand out to me are Wake Forest, New Mexico State and Missouri.

All three of these games will come on the road, and are definitely the toughest early challenges for the Illini.

Wake Forest

The Demon Deacons are coming off of a 19-win season in which they made the NCAA Tournament but were bounced by Kansas State in the first round.

They are returning two of their top three scorers in Bryant Crawford and Keyshawn Woods. So while this may not have the hype of the matchup back in 2004, this could prove to be a big and nice game on Illinois’ resume come March.

New Mexico State

The Aggies are coming off a 28-6 season where they made the tournament but suffered a tough loss against No. 3 seed Baylor. They lost their top two scorers, but the Aggies are still not to be underestimated.

Last year at home they boasted a 16-1 record, so picking up a win out west would be big for the Illini.

Missouri

This year’s Braggin’ Rights game has much more hype than in recent years, and that is for good reason. First of all, both programs will be in the first year of new coaching regimes.

Underwood and Cuonzo Martin will be looking to make an immediate impact in taking steps to bring both programs back to their former glory. Another reason is the flip of former Illini-commit Jeremiah Tilmon to Missouri. Tilmon was initially set to headline a strong recruiting class from for-

Though the nonconference schedule is slightly weaker than normal, there’s no way to discount the strength of the Big Ten this season. In the most recent preseason rankings, four Big Ten teams — Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern and Purdue — are ranked in the top-25, highlighted by the Spartans at No. 3.

Top to bottom the conference is as strong as ever, as that top four does not even include the likes of Michigan, Wisconsin or Iowa, who have been tough in recent years.

That said, three games that stand out the most to me are Northwestern in Rosemont, Michigan State at home, and Purdue at home.

The Tigers are also bringing in the nation’s top recruit — Michael Porter Jr. — who many have picked as the early favorite to be next year’s number one pick in the NBA draft. This will probably be the toughest non-conference game and has the potential to be a huge resume builder if the Illini can grab a win out in St. Louis.
