Navigate Quad Day like you’ve been there before SHANA OLIVIERO VIDEO EDITOR
Quad Day is a lot. There are hundreds of clubs and RSOs on campus, and there are only four hours on Quad Day to see as many as you can. The Main Quad will be packed with thousands of students seeing which clubs might interest them. Here are some tips to survive quad day and how to make the most of it.
Leave yourself time to explore the entire Main Quad
There is a lot to see in the four hours on Quad Day. Don’t wait an hour or two to get to the Main Quad; get there as soon as it starts so you can take a break after seeing one side of the Main Quad and then spend the rest of your time seeing the other. There are lines upon lines of people for free food, t-shirts and other goodies. Leave yourself time so you can go back to a booth once the line is shorter to sign up or get the freebies you couldn’t get when the line was long earlier.
Plan your route
You’ll want to take a look at the map before Quad Day starts so you have an idea of where certain booths will be located you know you want to check out. The Main Quad will be so packed which makes it difficult and chaotic to easily see each booth. Make sure you know which areas to prioritize and which areas you can come back to later. Some booths are located behind Foellinger or on the side of the Illini Union, so don’t forget about those!
Take breaks
The weather is typically scorching hot on Quad Day, so you’ll want to make sure you have time to go in air conditioning or get water before you conquer the other side of the Main Quad you didn’t get to yet. Dress appropriately, and wear a ton of sunscreen!

You don’t have to sign up for every club
You might feel tempted to put your email down for all the cool clubs you see, but a week into the semester you’ll have 30 emails from random
clubs you’re not interested in and you won’t know how to unsubscribe (or you’ll be too lazy to figure it out). Be smart and efficent about how many clubs you really think you’ll want to be a part of to avoid

Say ‘yes’ to as many things as you possibly can RACHEL KING ASSISTANT COPY CHIEF
If you’ve ever been to Quad Day, you know it can be a little daunting with the balmy weather, an overwhelming array of booths and the hordes of students. But if you prepare yourself for these factors, you’re in for a worthwhile campus experience during which hundreds of RSOs will gather in one location and attempt to sell their purposes and spaces on their signup sheets to you. Ultimately though, you have the power to decide whether one RSO is an appropriate fit for you or not. At my freshman year Quad Day, I took it upon myself to carefully study all of the organizations I came across and think deeply about each one. Was Adventure Club actually my secret passion? Did I really care about Greek life? Did I want to get involved in a club sport? At the end of the day, the decision was quite simple: Say no to the clubs that failed to captivate me and sign up for anything that sounded remotely fun, which ended up being a large amount. I signed up for some related to community service (Illini Fighting Hunger), some I would forget about one second later (Chain Management Club) and some I didn’t even understand (October Lovers Club). What’s reassuring is your signature on these sign-up sheets is completely nonbinding; you don’t have to ever hear from or seek out these clubs again if you decide against joining them. But if you find yourself enjoying the events they host or other members’ presence, you have yourself to thank for taking a chance of an organization you might not have heard of otherwise. College is often deemed an exploratory era. It’s a time when you can delve

into your identity and discover yourself on an elevated level, and there’s no better time to embark upon this journey of self-actualization than a day where many of life’s pleasures and opportunities are being set
out for you on a silver platter to pick and choose from. This is the day to say “yes” to anything appetizing on the menu. Some might argue this tactic of signing up for anything that catches your
eye lacks strategy and is a waste of time, but it actually allows you to open your mind up to activities you never would have imagined trying, and you might even like them. That’s the goal everyone strives for,
but you can never accomplish it if you stick to your comfort zone and shy away from anything you’re afraid of being judged for. Think of it like this: High school is for judging, college is for exploring. So head over to
Quad Day and try your hand at fencing, a capella or water polo. How else will you be able to find out if your destiny was to be a world-class rowing champion? rvking2@dailyillini.com

Don’t skip ‘Quadricep’ Day: Get your workout in KELLY JOHNSON EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
I’m so glad you’ve decided to do the Quad Day exercise challenge! It’s so kind for the University to care so much about our quadriceps to have a whole day dedicated to it. Maybe next year we’ll get a tricep day, but we’ll have to count our lucky stars. I hope you enjoy your Quad Day, and I have come up with an exercise routine to make sure you’re really working on those quadriceps.
10 laps around the Main Quad
During Quad Day, there will be what feels like millions of booths showcasing different campus clubs and activities you can join set up around and near the Main Quad. The University does this to distract us from the burning sensation of your quadriceps when they’re really working. Since there are so many booths set up, make sure you do about 10 laps around the Main Quad so you can see every group there is to join.
Five backwards jogs
Since you’re dedicated to your fitness regime, you’ll probably be speed walking to get the best workout for your quadriceps. Because of your speed walking, you might just speed walk past a booth you get a glance of and see a club you’re interested in joining. So, make sure to blast those quads with five backward jogs to see all the clubs and organizations the University has to offer.
Water break
The past two Quad Days I’ve participated in have been incredibly hot and sweaty ones, so make sure no matter how easy or hard your workout is you take a water break by either bringing your own or heading inside the Illini Union to get some water.
KENYON EDMOND THE DAILY ILLINI
Students walk along the Main Quad during Quad Day on Aug. 26. Quad Day can be quite a workout, from the long and crowded strolls up and down the Main Quad to ducking flyers and posters left and right.
20 side shuffles
As Quad Day is for all University students, you’ll find the Main Quad incredibly packed. As you go to avoid running into people or avoid-
ing that club which isn’t your cup of tea, you’ll find yourself doing about 20 side shuffles. If you’re feeling like you really want to feel the burn to avoid someone hitting you,

You can always unsubscribe from email lists SAMANTHA BOYLE NEWS EDITOR
Anyone who knows me knows one of the hardest things for me to do is say “no” to literally anything. I endure so many things I (secretly) do not want to do because I just could not say “no” to them. This slight personality flaw did wonders for me on Quad Day. I won’t lie to you. I only spent about 20 minutes at Quad Day my freshman year, but those 20 minutes had me signing up for things I knew I shouldn’t join or deep down knew I did not want to join. Quad Day had me putting my email down on lists for Registered Student Organizations that piqued my interest at one point in time or another but did not really pique my interests anymore. I would justify it by thinking to myself, “Well, maybe I’ll get back into this.” But this was not the truth. I just felt bad saying “no” and walking away without said RSO having my email down on their list. I’m not here to give you advice on how to just say “no” and avoid this whole situation in general because honestly, I would not know how to give that advice. Frankly, I need it myself. However, I am here to tell you if you are anything like me and cannot say “no” even if your life depended on it, there is another option: The unsubscribe button. If you just could not say “no” to the peppy groups standing behind their RSOs’ table or even if you genuinely thought you would be interested in something but later find out you really are not, you are not committed to that RSO just because you joined an email list. Sometimes you can find an unsubscribe button at the bottom of an email, but if there is not one, you can simply just ask nicely to be taken off the email list. I promise, no one will be mad at you. My freshman year, I got emails for the entire year

from two to three different RSOs I did not end up joining because I felt bad just walking by the table on Quad Day and did not think about the unsubscribing aspect.
Honestly, I think this is most definitely a better way of going about Quad Day rather than just being picky about what to put your name down on because you do
have that chance of unwillingly signing up for something that you might actually come to enjoy. The RSO you join could become your community and your home
away from home for the next four years. And honestly, there is no right or wrong way to go about Quad Day. But, I think it’s better to regret

Don’t get discouraged while searching for a right fit KATIE POWERS BUZZ EDITOR
The University of Illinois offers over 1,000 student organizations and activities. Quad Day is an important opportunity for students to interact with all of them and get a sense of where they might belong on a large campus. It’s a vital afternoon in a student’s Illinois experience that’s exciting, fastpaced and even a bit overwhelming. Many students go in with high expectations about the groups and the people they’ll get to interact with and even how the event might impact the rest of their college career. But for some students, Quad Day might not go as smoothly as planned. Perhaps they weren’t able to find the organization they were looking for or the crowds became too dense to properly interact with a particular organization. Or maybe none of the tables they stopped by or the flyers they picked up piqued their interest enough to pursue membership. In a few cases, they might even leave the Main Quad feeling like the entire afternoon was a waste of time. If this is your experience, don’t get discouraged. Quad Day is important and students would be remiss not to take full advantage of its offerings, but there are plenty of opportunities to find your place on campus long after the students clear and the tables are picked up. Although Quad Day is advertised as the end-allbe-all of student participation, you can find what you’re looking for any time of the year. Almost all student organizations have an easy-to-track presence on Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram where you can find more information about its meeting times, how to be added to its email listings and what it’s like to be a mem-

ber. Many groups make an effort to put up posters in buildings around campus to promote their general meetings or introductory events. Keep an eye out for these as you explore campus and attend your first week of classes. Remember to take advan-
tage of your resources and listen up for opportunities your resident advisers, professors and academic advisers might bring to your attention either in class, meetings or via email. Often these kinds of things are suited to your academic interests so be sure to con-
sider these opportunities carefully. Also, remember if you don’t end up finding groups that are the right fit for you at Quad Day and opportunities aren’t finding their way to you as planned after it’s over, don’t be afraid to speak up and actively seek

Don’t be afraid to discover your passions by yourself THERESE POKORNEY FEATURES EDITOR
College isn’t about staying in your comfort zone. To fully enjoy your first breaths of freedom, college is going to be awkward and full of new experiences. One way to explore your likes and dislikes, find your passions and start your self-discovery journey is by going to Quad Day. When I was a freshman, I would not dare to go anywhere alone. I would find someone to walk to class with, have lunch with and study with. Having a tightknit friend group has its perks for sure, but being with someone all the time can also influence the way you make your decisions. For example, if you really want to join the fishing club and your roommate hates fishing, this can bring up some awkward tension between the two of you. I went to Quad Day with my roommate freshman year, and even though we got along extremely well — we’re even friends today — exploring what you truly want to do is not the same when you’re with a friend. You make sacrifices for the booths and clubs they want to go to or you might feel ashamed about the ones you want to sign up for. Later on in the year, I ventured out a little more and joined clubs where I knew absolutely no one. This gave me the confidence to go to events, parties and meetings by myself. I learned how to make friends with strangers and find my community on a campus with over 50,000 students. This is a hard skill to learn, but I am so grateful I’m comfortable with meeting new people now (after all, isn’t that what college is supposed to be about?). To the freshmen who think being seen alone in college means you’re uncool or a loner: You’re wrong! College is not like high school, and everyone

is so preoccupied with their own thoughts and worries to be wondering why you’re walking around by yourself. Trust me, I was a self-conscious freshman,
too, and now a much wiser junior — not — I know no one cares what you look like because we’re all going through the same awkward transition into a new, beau-
tiful phase in life. Spending time alone is truly the only way you can discover yourself and what you’re passionate about, so I encourage everyone
to go to Quad Day alone. If that’s too big of a jump, go with friends, but take a lap around the Main Quad by yourself and sign up for those clubs, intramurals
and organizations you truly want to without the stress of your peers standing by your side. tpokor3@dailyillini.com

Make Quad Day booth stand out to attact students PARI APOSTOLAKOS MANAGING EDITOR FOR REPORTING
Everyone always talks about how to navigate Quad Day when you are the one signing up to join organizations, but nobody talks about how to get people interested in your club. Being just one of the hundreds of booths crammed onto a green rectangle in the blazing Champaign-Urbana summer heat makes it especially difficult to stand out and grab the attention of perspiring, dehydrated and frazzled college students. The following tips are a (possibly) surefire method to getting lots of new members on your email list this coming Quad Day. Read on and master the art of making extracurricular activities sound appealing.
Be loud, proud and clever
Shouting funny catch phrases or loud messages encouraging people to check out your booth will make you stand out against the people who are standing behind a folding table, talking to their friends and fanning themselves. Nobody thinks an organization is fun if the people advertising it look like they’re bored senseless. Say something like “We must really love (your organization’s name here) if we’re willing to stand out in the heat and get you to join!” might make a passerby crack a smile and look in your booth’s direction, and coming up with a slogan will give you something to do in between KENYON EDMOND THE DAILY ILLINI handing out free frisbees and pop sockets. That being said, have free stuff
This is almost a nobrainer, and I nearly didn’t include it in this list. College students can smell free stuff from the Illini Union to Foellinger Auditorium, and it’ll attract people to your booth even if they would never have glanced

at your sign otherwise. The only thing that trumps free stuff is free food, and if that food is cold – like popsicles kept in a cooler – it might be the best thing you’d see on Quad Day short of a booth handing out money (which isn’t a bad idea but probably isn’t allowed).
E FLY COME FLY WITH US. US. COME FLY WITH US.
Work in shifts
Even if you’re the president of your RSO, be sure to let go of the reins and allow the members of your organization to represent your mission to newcomers. A long day of standing outside doesn’t make anyone look or feel all that pleas-
zation or at least show up at the informational meeting. A letter to new students: Struggles become successes AVA TRAVERSO SPECIAL SECTIONS EDITOR
Dear new student: Welcome to what may be the wildest, scariest, most challenging, most insightful and most wonderful four years of your life. Whatever perception American media has given you about college, throw it out the window. What you will quickly learn to be the concrete truth is this: College is whatever you desire it to be. That is one of the things that makes it so exciting. It allows you a new path to reinvent yourself into a person unique from the identity high school locked you into for four years. Going off to University gives you the opportunity to grow into the person you want to be. College is not always parties and fun, however. It can absolutely be lonely, especially during those first few weeks in the dorms before friendships have solidified. That’s to be expected. Almost all college students go through it at some point or another. It is a part of growing up and growing into your new self. The hard times of school will help you learn new things and get to know yourself in a way you never could have before. I speak from personal experience. Freshman year was an incredibly bumpy ride for me. I had some of my best times, as well as some of the worst in my life. I had relationship issues, problems with friends and stress from the new collegelevel courses. When May rolled around, I came out of the year a stronger and more mature person for the struggles I had overcome. The hard times I experienced then helped usher me into some of the best things in my life right now. I can personally tell you whatever adversity school throws at you, it will probably give you good times double that. Just make sure you take

the time to give it a chance before you make snap judgments about the University or about any people you meet during your time here. Joining clubs and activities can be a great way to make your experience even beter. College could be where you meet your future spouse, your friends for life
or a mentor who gives you a new passion for your field of study. These things can only be brought into your life if you keep an open mind and give the college an honest, full chance. For those of you worried about academics, study hard but know when to take a break. Your grades are not
worth damaging your mental health. Know when to stop and get help when you need it, whether it be in a therapeutic or an academic sense. Academic burnout is insanely real and will get you if you do not work to take care of yourself. Make friends in your classes and your major. When

Make your Quad Day bucket list items count NATALIE STANOWSKI ASSISTANT SPECIAL SECTIONS EDITOR
With the start of the school year upon us, Quad Day is finally here. Packed to the brim with RSOs, Greek life and your sweaty fellow college students, Quad Day can seem like an insurmountable behemoth of an event, especially if it’s your first time. While there are dozens upon dozens of options to choose from, here are a few can’t-miss ideas for this year’s Quad Day.
Stop by the poster sale
Whether you’re a veteran upperclassman living off campus or a new student making the dorms their home, there’s no easier way to make you room feel like home than a new poster of something you love. While this isn’t technically an event on the Main Quad, you’ll probably want a break from the heat and crowd. The sale will be held inside the Union from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. for those wanting a blast of cold air conditioning or a new poster for their room.
Grab a free t-shirt
One of the biggest motivators for students to take part in Quad Day, aside from looking for new organizations to join, is all the free swag handed out. While you’ll certainly find yourself with more free tees than you can wear over the course of your college career, there’s no harm in starting early. Double points if you can snag a free shirt from one of the clubs you were already KENYON EDMOND THE DAILY ILLINI interested in joining. Quad Day is an exciting day for freshmen. It’s often the first day on your own on campus — the potential in the air is visceral. It feels like the whole world is at your fingertips, from animal-lover clubs to political organizations to cultural houses. For upperclassmen, though, Quad Day is hard to deal with. Everyone is hot and sticky and crabby, and the lack of shade on the Main Quad suddenly becomes really noticeable. One day, you may find yourself standing next to a hot plastic table on steaming concrete in the middle of a swarm of sweaty twentysomethings while shamelessly hawking your chosen club, too, young freshman. Since we all wind up there at some point, make an effort to be courteous while browsing the lines of booths. Here are a few key pointers for how to survive Quad Day while being conscientious with the people you talk to.
Eye contact won’t kill you
A walk through the Main Quad on Aug. 25th is going to mean sensory overload: There will be lots of people talking and yelling, music playing, food being sold and posters (oh, so many posters) standing on the folding tables that line the lawn. It will get overwhelming. You will get tired. But don’t let the exhaustion get to you: Remember the guy pleading for you to check out his heavily stickered posterboard has been standing in the heat all day. The lady with the clipboard asking for signatures believes in her cause so much she’d be willing to brave the cynical masses of freshmen on campus to find supporters. Look each of these people in the eye and give them a polite “No, thank you.” It might seem like a small symbol, but it means a lot to

Handle free stuff handed out on Quad Day like a senior TYLER PANLILIO MANAGING EDITOR FOR ONLINE
Everyone knows Quad Day is the day to get involved with the 1,800 (and counting!) RSOs here at the University. It’s basically an entire Sunday where students walk around the Main Quad, meet some chill people and see what interests them — academically, socially or professionally. But that’s all the boring stuff. Quad Day also remains the sole day where these same 1,800 RSOs are trying to get you to join them. What better way to entice freshmen than by giving them a bunch of free stuff? From an old, decaying senior to the class of 2023, here’s a few pointers on all the free stuff handed out on Quad Day.
The cream of the crop: T-shirts and cups
In the past, I’ve gotten free shirts from Orange Krush and Block I, our school’s very own sports hype sections for basketball and football, respectively. And last year, WPGU 107.1, our school’s studentrun radio station, also gave out some gnarly T-shirts in exchange for a social media follow. Of all free things handed out on Quad Day, T-shirts (or any article of clothing for that matter) remain the toughest to get. Not many RSOs do this anymore — but if you see it, snag it! During my sophomore year, I went to Quad Day with my two roommates. One of them disappeared immediately, saying he had to do some fraternity booth stuff. Little did I know, the madman came back to our apartment hours later holding 30 plastic, neon orange cups. These cups were then used for the rest of the school year. To this day, I’m a firm believer in cups being the underdog freebie of Quad Day. You could honestly get away with bringing no cups whatsoever as an

Might as well recycle: Koozies and flyers
Did you know there are over 30 different names for a koozie? We’ve got some great ones, like coldy-holdy, bottle buddy and my person-
al favorite: candom. And yet they are still useless. Who even uses these things anymore? Just hold your drink. I’ve probably gotten 10 of these foam beverage holders over the course of college. Not once have I thought, “Hey, let me use this koozie to hold my drink!” Recycle those flyers, but only because we should keep

Quad Day opportunities aren’t just for new students KAYLA BROWN ASSISTANT BUZZ EDITOR
Freshman year is overwhelming. Students may have a hard time fitting in every single activity and event they hoped to try and accomplish once they get to campus. As time passes, though, it becomes easier to balance priorities and figure out what things you enjoy and what you don’t. That being said, it’s never too late to try something new. If you find yourself entering your sophomore, junior or even senior year with more time and a desire to change things up a bit, you can still join any of the clubs and RSOs the University has to offer. While Quad Day seems to be geared toward freshman looking to find their niche on campus, nearly every RSO allows students from any class to join each year.
Join an RSO
Some great RSOs to join later in your college career are academic and pre-professional clubs that can help you prepare for life after graduation. As you delve into your major and begin looking for ways to expand your resume and experience, clubs and academic fraternities related to your major are a huge help. You’ll be surrounded by people with goals similar to yours and have abundant resources at your fingertips.
Volunteer locally and internationally
If you’re looking to volunteer more in the C-U community in your upcoming years, there are a ton of great service-based RSOs on campus. There are opportunities to volunteer on campus, in hospitals and KENYON EDMOND THE DAILY ILLINI even in other countries. Survive, thrive in midst of Quad Day stress HANNAH PRESTON COPY CHIEF
For those of you who have attended a Quad Day at the University, you have an idea of the kind of misery to be had at this highly anticipated, useful and stressful event. Thousands and thousands of students — new faces and seasoned upperclassmen alike — crowd the sidewalks of the Main Quad, fighting for the chance to sign up for anything they may be remotely interested in pursuing in college. Sign-up sheets are filled with emails and bags are filled with freebies, but you’re also drowning in your own sweat, burning in the August afternoon sun and dying of thirst from the moment you step food on the grass. If you want to go hard on Quad Day, use these tricks to make the most of your time there.
Coordinate with your team before you leave
This event is one of the most attended events at the University each year, and like the hundreds of organizations, vendors and programs that prepared for this day, you should set your plans straight. Figure out who you’re going with, and look at the Quad Day map together. Locate the areas you know you’re interested in hitting, like volunteering or Greek life, and decide on a game plan to make sure you don’t accidentally bypass something crucial to your college plan.
Prepare for the weather
A nother impor ta nt aspect of preparing is making sure you dress appropriately for the weather. Most likely, it will be hot and humid — even more so on the Main Quad when it’s packed with people — so throw on light, airy clothes that won’t suffocate you. To deal with the inevitable sun, apply sunblock before you leave; you’d be surprised how quickly you can sunburn while brows-

ing for your new obsession. Also, grab your water bottle before you leave and fill it with ice-cold water to keep you cool while walking. Many booths will offer you refreshments, but it’s better to be prepared — especially if you’re late getting there in the first place.
Be proactive about your interests
Quad Day is, first and foremost, a chance to get involved in the different things the University has to offer, and while getting to the tables may be tiring and stressful, taking the time to thoroughly look at what the
people at each booth have to offer may pay off immensely. Take the time to seek out the things you’re interested in because this day only comes around once a year. Sign up for everything you can even remotely see yourself enjoying; the unsubscribe button is there
if you decide you aren’t into it. If someone hands you a flyer you aren’t interested in, accept it and recycle it later. Don’t let the lack of freebies — and likely, the lack of a crowd — scare you away from chatting with club members about the activities the club par-
takes in because those are often the best opportunities to get the best picture of what a club is all about. Be open, and be interested in what people have to say. You never know what you might find. hlp2@dailyillini.com

Don’t force yourself to join everything you see JOSE ZEPEDA ASSISTANT DAYTIME NEWS EDITOR
Quad Day offers a diverse amount of RSOs to browse and consider joining. When I was a freshman, I was eager to join as many different organizations as I can, thinking I would be able to handle the time commitment that comes with each organization. Before I started my college career, I thought I would have a similar schedule to high school. My thought was I’d have classes in the morning and early afternoon and meetings with RSOs and sports clubs in the evening. I was wrong. Though it may not seem like it at first, the college experience is very different than the high school experience. There is simply not enough time to do everything you want to do. Of course, this does not mean you should not join any RSOs, but consider moderating yourself with what you join. Think about all of the new things you will have to find time for, such as laundry and studying, as well as general college life. Instead, think about what you are truly most passionate about, what you have always wanted to try out and what you want to do to help further your major. Once that has been determined, make a list of the top five-or-so RSOs you want to join. Once your top five potential RSOs has been determined, check them out at Quad Day and talk with a representative. Investigate how demanding the RSO is and how much time you would have to contribute. Maybe you will learn their meeting times do not work with your schedule. Maybe you will learn the RSO is not for you. Maybe you fall in love with the RSO and choose to dedicate all of your free time to it. Note that not every RSO will be out on Quad Day, as the Main Quad simply does
