ach fall, the ChampaignUrbana community decides the area has to offer. Our job at buzz is to highlight these winners in our Best of C-U publication. We’ve spent a lot of time tallying your votes, writing about each of the 49 categories and designing this guide. Now we have the opportunity to share the winners that you voted for, and we couldn’t be more appreciative. In this publication, we’ve also included the editors’ picks, which allows us to express our personal choices of the best food, entertain-

ment and community activities. We hope they give you an idea for things that might’ve not garnered attention from others. I joined buzz in my sophomore year to write album reviews and interview local bands. I got to accomplish both of these, but the experiences also encouraged me to explore every crevice of the community. From watching Ryan Groff impersonate Morrissey during 2019’s Great Cover-Up to attending the Salamander Meander at Busey Woods, there are countless times when I felt proud to have gone to school here. Working for this magazine has undoubtedly opened my eyes beyond what I knew as a city dweller from Chicago. It’s so easy to immerse yourself in the culture here, and no matter what life stage you’re in, there’s a place for you. This type of support is what keeps the community unified under stressful circum-
stances. With the rise of COVID-19, we, unfortunately, saw local businesses struggle. We also didn’t get to enjoy some of our typical activities from previous years. Despite these limitations, we continue to find ways to enliven the spirit of Champaign-Urbana. By doing “Best of C-U” each year, buzz has the privilege of highlighting what you all deem as the best, but it doesn’t end there. I encourage everyone to celebrate what makes our community unique. There are so many things to appreciate, from Urbana’s endless cobblestone streets to Champaign’s bustling nightlife. Thank you all for voting, and we look forward to producing the next “Best of C-U” in 2021. jel3@readbuzz.com

hampaign-Urbana has once again voted Black Dog Smoke & Ale House as its go-to barbecue restaurant. This hot spot continues to smoke its competition for 11 years in a row. Since its opening in 2009, Black Dog has made a great impression on the community. With locations in both Champaign and Urbana, the restaurant offers barbecue for everyone in the area. Black Dog takes pride in the food it serves, which is displayed through the process of making some of its signature dishes. For example, its pulled pork, served either on a platter or in a sandwich, is smoked for 12 to 14 hours until it pulls apart. For those who want some good ole barbecue, Black Dog offers many options. From sausage to brisket, the possibilities are endless. Each dish

This restaurant isn’t only for meat lovers. Black Dog’s menu is inclusive of those with alternative eating lifestyles. Its impossible burgers are to die for, and the restaurant offers a variety of fish dishes, from catfish to salmon. Black Dog is the perfect spot to impress your parents when they’re in town, as both locations are a bit of a hike away from campus. Might as well let them treat you to a dining experience the community has voted as the best for over a decade. jel3@readbuzz.com

Well, maybe that’s a bit dramatic, but you’d be lying if you said you hadn’t experienced that before. One of the best ways to deal with these types of nights is by ordering in some delicious Thai food, and what better place is there to visit than Siam Terrace? Located at 212 Main St. in Urbana, Siam Terrace offers a variety of authentic Thai food, ranging from favorites like Pad Thai,
chicken satay and my personal favorite, Thai iced tea. You can also pick out something from the sushi bar if that’s more up your alley. Everything is reasonably priced, so you don’t have to feel guilty about spending money instead of cooking. Champaign-Urbana offers several Thai places, but none of them compares to Siam Terrace. fter a night out at old KAM's, I would find myself salivating at the thought of calling the night early for a Mexican Omelet. This point-of-noreturn would be accompanied by a nod to my roommate in which we would have a non-verbal, mutual understanding of what would happen next. We would make an escape plan to Merry Ann’s Diner. Merry Ann’s Diner isn’t the best drunk food because of its menu’s possibilities. It is just the best drunk experience. At Merry Ann’s, it’s whatever time you decide it is. For me, it’s always breakfast time, my happy place. For the late-night cooks, the kitchen becomes their own KAM's, providing their customers with the exact type of aggressive hip-hop needed on a Saturday night. The diner’s reckless late-night vibe, combined with its old school interior
design, gives a beautiful juxtaposition. A buzz, greasy food and loud music: simply the holy trinity for a drunken individual. In these strange times, the atmosphere may be diminished at the remaining Merry Ann’s off of Neil Street, but the effect remains the same. Say drunk you wants a hamburger and soup? Merry Anne’s will deliver. Maybe you’d like eggs and bacon at 2 a.m.? Merry Ann’s will answer the call. At Merry Ann’s, you can be who you want when you want. So the next time you get a buzz, an appetite and a taste for freedom, know that Merry Ann’s Diner is right around the corner and has got what you need. mebeyer2@readbuzz.com

unch! Bar & Lounge, located on N. Neil St. on the ground floor of Hyatt Place, opened in July of last year. Although it has only been open for such a short time, Punch! has indeed shown that it takes its mission to provide exceptional service, food and atmosphere seriously. Punch! has won many awards this year, establishing high standards for its business across the board. Those who aren’t familiar with Punch! may be shocked that a bar won Best Dessert over a patisserie or bakery. However, Punch!’s food menu includes many delights. Its desserts come in distinct flavors such as mango, starfruit and goji in its Grandma’s Cheesecake, lavender-honeysea salt, earl grey cream and rose-pistachio in its Chocolate Tartlet Trio and espresso, vanilla and
chocolate in its White Russian Bar. Several desserts also incorporate alcohol like the rum or bourbon whipped cream of the Key Lime Bar, Pineapple Cinnamon Crumble and strawberry-tequila ice cream of its ChocolateChile Brownie. This innovative mix of desserts and its pictureperfect presentation shows a lot of creativity and skill. Punch!’s immaculate presentation of its desserts makes it hard to decide between diving right in to eat or taking food pictures for the ‘gram. More in the mood for something savory to accompany your drink? Punch! offers a variety of sharable bites from fries to flatbreads as well. bastein3@readbuzz.com

Milkshake lovers can find flavors such as the classic vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, banana, hot fudge, peanut butter, coffee and mocha. Milkshakes aren’t the only dessert The Courier Cafe offers, though. You can find things like cheesecake, brownies, cookies and ice cream. The cafe also offers breakfast, lunch and dinner menus filled with omelets, biscuits and gravy, salads, burgers and wraps.
Before it was a cafe, the building was first a two-room log cabin in 1837, and the early 1900s housed The Courier Newspaper. The building was also almost burned down in a fire in the early 1950s but was saved and rebuilt until the newspaper was shut down in 1979. The Courier Cafe has been open in Urbana since Nov. 10, 1980 and has been serving all three meals seven days a week since then. Of course, the inevitable COVID-19 pandemic has closed the cafe for a short time but will announce on Facebook, Instagram and their website with plans to reopen. The Courier Cafe has also seized carry-out orders. sjboyle2@dailyillini.com

EDITORS' PICKS BEST GLUTEN-FREE PIZZA MIA ZA’S

If
you’re gluten-free, you know how difficult finding decent gluten-free substitutes can be, especially on a college campus where everything seems to be full of gluten. This can make it difficult to find filling foods that satisfy your impulsive cravings. One craving that I have is pizza, and Mia Za’s is definitely the way to go if you also crave a slice. One of the great things about Mia Za’s is that, unlike many other gluten-free pizza places, you can show up, request your gluten-free crust, and it’ll be ready in just
a couple of minutes, making Mia Za’s both convenient and quick. You can choose tons of toppings to create your dream gluten-free pizza, and they’re a decent size, so you don’t get ripped off for paying extra for a glutenfree crust. Not only that, but the pizzas are delicious and make you want to come back for even more. Though C-U offers other gluten-free pizza options, nothing is as quite as affordable, delicious and convenient as Mia Za’s.

icture this: It’s 11 p.m. and you’re starving. You want something cheap and greasy, but you also want something substantial enough to supress your hunger. What better way to satisfy your need for late-night food than indulge in a greasy bag of chips or a huge burrito from Burrito King? I’m serious; nothing will satisfy your greasy cravings quite as effectively as well as Burrito King will. You can either go to the store in person, have it delivered or place an order online, making it possible for you to get your food no matter how lazy you feel. Burrito King has a huge menu, so you’ll have no problem finding something to eat.

Whether you get a random craving late at night or you’re heading back from a midnight gathering, Burrito King will be there for you without breaking the bank. garibay5@readbuzz.com
In
my four years at the University of Illinois and 21 years living through Midwest winters, one of the biggest survival techniques is comfort food to get through the cold months. One of my favorite ways to thaw out on brutally cold days is with a bowl of soup or stew; Ozu Ramen’s bowls expertly scratch that itch. With an expert array of small plates, buns and entrees, there is something to satisfy every set of taste buds. My favorite orders fluctuate between the miso and tonkotsu
ramen bowls, but I always make sure to tack on the barbecue pork buns to my order. The richness and saltiness of the bone broths are more than enough to ward off the worst chills. The restaurant also utilizes delicious toppings like fish cakes, pork belly and mushrooms to create a hearty and interesting flavor profile. Out of all my trips there, Ozu Ramen has always been a winner. avat2@readbuzz.com

espite being in the center of cornfields, Champaign-Urbana has a rich musical culture unique to our community. From the crowded house shows in Urbana before COVID-19 to the current socially-distanced performances at Rose Bowl Tavern, we keep finding innovative ways to make and perform music. However, it’s harder for up-and-coming bands as they’re still trying to find their creative styles. This year, C-U has voted Vinyl Sides as their favorite up-and-coming band. The band consists of Joe Grudt, Max Szymczak, James, AJ and Jess. Since their formation in 2018, Vinyl Sides keeps a low profile but knows how to play loudly for people’s enjoyment. The band members met while working for Pizza FM, a college radio station in Allen
Hall’s basement that consists entirely of University of Illinois students. Allen Hall is known to have the artsiest people, so it only fits that Vinyl Sides got their start from there. From then, Vinyl Sides had the opportunity of playing alongside acts like Anika Emily, Clockwork Owl and The Data Waves at IMC’s Flor Fest in 2019. The festival highlighted both musical and poetry acts within the community and raised money for the Up Center. It’s unknown what the band is doing nowadays, but we hope an album is on the horizon. jel3@readbuzz.com

EDITOR'S PICKS FOREVER THE BEST MUSICIAN
CJ RUN JULIA YOUMAN BUZZ STAFF WRITER

hicago-based singer, songwriter and rapper, CJ Run, is crowned Forever the Best Musician this year. The former UI student explores the nuances of love and identity through music and is working to increase representation in the industry. They produced their last album, "Here for Now," while studying for classes, attending club meetings and taking trips to the Main Quad. Run identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns. They studied broadcast journalism at UIUC before moving to Logan Square in Chicago, following their latest album release. After finding a space in Chicago, Run continues to work on music that fuses their various musical influences and grapples with their identity's plurality. Growing up in Germany and the UK, Run blends British hip-hop with R&B and has
some hints of electronic music. Their songs are the perfect complement to your favorite jazzy-rap artists and fit well on a playlist with Frank Ocean and Lauryn Hill. Better yet, turn on the full album for some serotonin and energy before tackling an assignment. With three EPs, an album and a slew of singles under their belt, Run is far from new. But their recent work has splashed onto the scene and amasses them like never before. But they are only just starting. Their album earned local and national coverage, and for the way, it explored black British culture and immigration. If you are looking for something a little electronic, a little nostalgic or a little 90s, turn their ‘Here for Now,’ and try not to dance along. jyouman2@readbuzz.com

he epitome of any college experience includes a place where you can hang out. Though other sites around Champaign-Urbana offer opportunities for people to do so, nothing beats basking in the sun or throwing around a frisbee with friends. This year, the Main Quad has won the title of Best Community Hangout, and for a good reason. It’s a perfect spot for those who want their daily dosage of Vitamin D while maintaining social distance. Sometimes, you might even get a glimpse of some interesting characters from random saxophone players to people who walk their ferrets on the grass (true story, and it all happened on the same day). Possibly, one of the best reasons why the Main Quad continues to be a fan-favorite is how the seasons change around it. During the fall, community members venture there to
see the leaves turn to beautiful shades of red and orange. It’s also not uncommon to see snowpeople built during the winter. If you were a student on campus before COVID-19, you probably loathed walking on the Main Quad at times. It was annoying how busy it got during the afternoon, and sometimes you just wanted to walk in peace without a club heckling you to buy a doughnut for a fundraiser. Now, looking back, you never really appreciate something until it’s gone. Colder weather is unfortunately upon us once again, making it harder to appreciate the outdoors. However, one thing that’ll keep the campus community going is remembering the experience of sitting on the Main Quad and seeing chalk drawings after a long winter. jel3@readbuzz.com

alt & Light Ministries, the beloved nonprofit, has won the hearts of Champaign-Urbana shoppers and volunteers, earning the title of “Best Resale Shop.” With locations in both Champaign and Urbana, the fully volunteer-run store works to combat poverty on a local and national level. Their mission is simple: to share the love of God by empowering people. They are a ministry that believes in fighting all poverty levels with dignity and grace. Not only do they ease the financial struggles of local families by offering heavily discounted groceries and food, but they also aim to educate the public about poverty. Volunteers and store-leaders write impassioned blog posts, which you can read on their website, about the benefits of volunteering and avoiding the beggar mindset. If vintage thrifting is a little too expensive for you, head over to Salt & Light to shop
sustainably and locally. Every purchase of flannel or a vintage couch gives back. You could spend an entire afternoon sifting through gently used clothing, jewelry and furniture. If you are a senior citizen, watch out on their Facebook for weekly grocery discounts! Salt & Light’s Director of Retail, Mike Jenkins, has dedicated his time to helping people and believes in the store's mission. He said if you want to help out too, you can shop with them. “Salt & Light is 100% community-focused. Be it location or finances, we help to remove all barriers to basic resources without costing people their dignity,” Jenkins said. “Friends support and help fund the ministry by simply shopping at our stores.” jyouman2@readbuzz.com

xile On Main Street has defended its title as Best Record Store in Champaign-Urbana yet again. Since its opening in 2004, it has won the hearts of local vinyl lovers nearly every year. The relaxed, vintage vibes keep its customers coming back, whether it’s for a CD, LP, record, turntable or video game. You name it; they likely have it. And if they don’t, the owner, Jeff Brandt, will find a way to get it. Brandt knows a thing or two about the record business. In fact, he’s only worked in record shops since the early 1990s. He’s stocked the store with everything ranging from the classics to the new releases and everything in between. If you find yourself with a couple of hours to spare on the weekend, pop over to sift through their many shelves of hidden indie-rock gems, onehit-wonders and up and coming local artists. In case several rooms of vintage music weren’t enough, you can walk next door to Dandelion Vintage and pick up the perfect complement to an original Rolling Stones record — a
pair of thrifted wide-leg jeans straight from the 1970s. After moving locations in 2014 to larger stores with more room for an endless supply of vinyl, Exile has shared a space with the beloved Dandelion Vintage ever since. The two nostalgic Champaign-Urbana staples offer the perfect lazy Saturday activity or midday study break. They also buy used CDs, cassettes, LPs, video games and take select stereo equipment, so bring your stuff by to make a few extra dollars or get some in-store credit. While they’ve postponed live events during COVID-19, they are still hosting occasional virtual open mics and are still open for in-person shopping Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m to 9 p.m and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. Social distancing and masks are required! elf-expression is important; it’s how we let the world perceive us. Some people choose to express themselves through music, dancing or fashion. Others get tattoos. Tattoos can tell you a lot about a person’s life and their interests, beliefs or identity without actually having a conversation with that person. Tattoos are also a huge commitment. Whatever tattoo you choose will forever be inked on your body, so you need to go to a trustworthy, experienced tattoo artist who can guide you through the process of making that commitment. Lucky for you, Champaign-Urbana hosts a reputable tattoo shop that has consistently been praised by the community as the best local tattoo and piercings shop. For nine years, the community has voted No Regrets as C-U’s best tattoo and piercing parlor. Since its opening in 2007, the shop has dominated Champaign-Urbana’s local tattoo and body piercing scene by working with customers to create
original, one-of-a-kind pieces, according to the shop’s website. Located in downtown Champaign, No Regrets is a reliable, knowledgeable and safe environment for any customer regardless of their background with body modification. Matt Stines, the owner of No Regrets, began tattooing when he was 16 years old and has known from early on that he wanted to be a tattoo artist. The shop’s tattoo artists’ styles range from realistic portraiture style to black and grey realism to portraits, and you can view the artists’s portfolios on the shop’s website. No Regrets has earned the public’s respect and admiration throughout the years by providing quality tattoos and piercings that lure in new customers and keep previous customers returning for more. You enter a warmed room with candles and do various rounds of vinyasa and other yoga poses. One of the best feelings comes toward the end of class.
