Everyone will tell you Illinois is going to be cold, and you’re going to think this to yourself: “Oh, yeah, I’m sure it’ll be cold, but I’ll be fine.”

I’m here to tell you you will not be fine. Get a good down jacket, gloves, a hat, that whole kit and caboodle. Take how cold you’ll think it’ll be, and subtract about 30 degrees. I’ve lived in Illinois my whole life, and every winter I am shocked once again.

How weather fluctuates

OK, I promise this whole article will not be about the weather, but this again is another very important factor. While you need to pack a huge down winter coat, don’t forget a swimsuit and sunscreen. The weather is literally one of the most confusing things about Illinois. It really will be 60 degrees one day and then 15

How large and diverse the student body is

This is a great thing for everyone attending Illinois. The amount I have learned from my peers simply due to our differences is amazing. However, the amount of people can get a little overwhelming at first. I went to a large high school, and even I was a little nervous at first walking around on campus, especially when upperclassmen are walking so confidently to the Transportation Building — which, by the way, I didn’t know was a thing until I looked it up. Try to remain calm, and leave early for classes for the first few weeks. If you’re getting pretty lost, don’t be afraid to ask someone. Most people are pretty friendly on campus and know the feeling.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a picky eater; the amount of food places offered in Campustown is kind of incredible for a college town. Whether you’re trying a new dining hall, a classic fast food chain or a town favorite, you’ll be able to try all different types of food while here on campus.

You might not think having a bunch of different food options will be a big deal, but it’ll be a life saver when you’re tired of eating the same thing from the dining hall. It’ll also be a long conversation with your friends deciding on where to go to eat, only to decide everyone should just get their own thing and meet up after.

Feel at home on your university campus JULIE KANG ASSISTANT DAYTIME EDITOR

Being an international student at a public university can be daunting. The new culture, surroundings and people can make it difficult for you to adjust (initially).

I lived in Illinois for about the first 12 years of my life and then moved to Seoul, South Korea, and graduated from a small international school. I had never felt out of place, but when I began preparing for my new life in college, I realized I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into. Although I knew a decent number of people going into the University, I didn’t know if I would be able to find “my people.” I decided to make a game plan to make myself feel at home as much as possible, and here’s where I found success in making Illinois my home.

WELCOME HOME!

Get involved everywhere Join as many RSOs, clubs and groups as you can. Start by signing up for more than you can handle and give them a try. Then you can drop out of the ones you don’t particularly enjoy. Most — if not all — dorms hold hangouts or events regularly. Go to them, and meet people who live in your area.

Get to know your roommate really well

Your roommate is one of the people you will probably see the most during your first year. Spend some time outside of your dorm room, and get to know him or her — even if you think you already do. Go out for lunch, grab coffee or go to a party together. Being close with your roommate can make you feel at home; it’s comforting to know the person you are living with cares about you.

Decorate your room

The decorations you bought at Target can spice up your room, but the decorations that will really make you feel at home are the ones from home. Bring something small that reminds you of home, and also print some photos and stick them in picture frames or on the walls.

Eat food from home

The University has a relatively large international student population, which is why you can find many different types of food both on and away from campus. The food may not taste the same as it does back home, but at least it will alleviate your homesickness and give you a nice break from repetitive dorm food.

Moving away from home is never easy. Far from friends and family, facing a new environment in a new country can be overwhelming.

But home should still feel like home, no matter the location. Here’s how to make your new living space in the U.S. feel a little more like home.

Bring something special from home

While is it difficult to bring everything you love from home overseas, it doesn’t hurt to bring a few items to make yourself feel at home. Having something familiar can help you adapt to a new space. Even if you might not notice these items when you first move in, they can help comfort you when home seems too far away.

Whether that item is a stuffed animal or childhood blanket if you have space for it in your suitcase, why not bring it to your new home?

Build a photo wall with memories from home

These memories can be the start to even more fun, new memories you can create with friends in college! So get creative and start taking lots of photos to make your new space feel like home!

Make your bed comfortable

Your bed should be a place you feel most comfortable. Most dorms and apartments, however, don’t have the best mattresses to help you get a good night’s sleep. So make your bed feel comfortable, like home. Trust me, it is definitely worth investing in your bed. Add some pillows, a soft comforter and bedding of your choice. This will make you feel at home in no time!

Get your spirit on as a new Illinois fan place at an athletic event, IlliNOISE is a student and fan-favorite for many reasons. For one, it’s a great reason to go cheer on the Illinois volleyball team, who returns this fall with 2018 NCAA tournament semi-final appearance under its belt. Secondly, it’s one of the rowdiest events during the fall sports season right after Stuff Huff and the homecoming game.

What “I’m from Chicago” really means BRENDAN MCGOVERN ASSISTANT COPY CHIEF

As the state’s flagship college, the University of Illinois holds a large in-state student population. In fact, 78.3% of new students entering the Fall 2018 semester were in-staters, residing from any city located within the state of Illinois.

This being said, the chances of running into an in-state resident on the street is over 3/4ths, with a great majority of these students coming from the Chicagoland area.

With such a great amount of the University’s student population coming from the Chicagoland area, it might be helpful to become acquainted with the different contexts for which you might hear the phrase “I am from Chicago.”

To international and out-of-state students

The Chicago skyline is probably one of the first things both people who are and aren’t from Chicago think of when they hear the city mentioned.

even respond with a follow-up such as “which part,” given their understanding of Chicago’s vast suburbs.

Often people who have visited Chicago are aware of the Metra train lines that connect the surrounding suburbs to the downtown area, which has largely expanded the range at which people define Chicagoland.

For example, the northwest line of Metra, travels from Ogilvie Transportation Center to Harvard, Illinois, each day. This line is 72.3 miles and takes one hour and fifty one minutes to complete. Despite the distance, Harvard, Illinois, is still considered part of the Chicagoland area.

To other people from the Chicagoland area

You may have already ran into someone from your home neighborhood on campus or at least found someone who lives close to you. This is the reality for many students living in the Chicagoland area.

After encountering many students from this region, you are almost guaranteed to develop a list of suburbs populated with Illini.

Perhaps you have heard “I’m from Schaumburg” or “I’m from Naperville” several times as these large suburbs send many students to the University each year.

When in-state students begin a conversation with other in-state student, often they will try to find people or friends in common. This is a great way to grow your circle of friends on campus, which can lead to carpools later down the line.

A lot goes into the simple statement of “I’m from Chicago,” and next time this statement is used in casual conversation you’ll be prepared.

No matter where you’re from or how close the comfort of your hometown friends and the nostalgic warmth of your family’s secret recipes is, homesickness and loneliness are bound to visit all college students in one way or another. As an uneasy freshman, I could take a three-hour bus ride back home in Chicago if I was sick or just wanted to flop on my own couch and sleep in my own childhood bed. However, if your hometown and old friends can only be reached by plane, this isn’t as much of an option. Luckily, the University has countless spaces and resources to meet with fellow students who share the same interests, passions and struggles while taking in the rich academic and social scene ChampaignUrbana has to offer.

Any classroom on campus

To some, this suggestion might be more than a little obvious. Of course, you’re bound to meet other students when you’re crammed in a classroom together several times a week. However, for others, especially during bleak morning classes or difficult gen-eds, their first instinct to survive may be to keep their heads down and work alone.

Not only can avoiding other students’ input and

study damage you academically, but it can also prevent you from forming real social bonds and friendships made from mutual interests, constructive communication and a shared desire to succeed. Even as a domestic student who has grown up watching and hearing stories about Greek life, it was still one of the most overwhelming parts of coming to the University of Illinois.

With nearly 90 organizations to choose from and over 7,000 students already involved, I had no idea how to differentiate between any of them or how to get involved. It’s truly a multifaceted program with so many different routes you can take, so let me help break it down for you.

Professional fraternities

If you’re looking to connect with more people who are in your major or on a similar career path as you, a professional fraternity might be a great option for you. These organizations focus on giving you resources to succeed. You might encounter things like seminars, workshops and networking opportunities. This is a great way to continue learning outside of the classroom as well as meet some really great friends. These organizations are typically coed and participate in informal recruitment.

Social fraternities and sororities

Definitely the most common form of Greek life, these organizations are typically divided up by gender. While they focus mostly on social aspects of campus life, they also share values that align with philanthropy, academics and sisterhood/brotherhood. Social fraternities and sororities are a great way to meet new people with similar interests as you and find fun things to do around campus. Fraternities usually partake in informal recruitment at the beginning of each semester where current and prospective members can interact with

Cultural fraternities and sororities

These Greek houses help people with similar backgrounds connect with each other, learn more about their culture and practice their shared values. Every organization has a different recruitment process, so do your research and look out for new opportunities.

Academic fraternities

The University has several academically affiliated organizations. These, similar to professional organizations, revolve around your major, work path and extending education. Most commonly known are the organizations for agriculture, engineering, science and technology. These organizations are great resume builders and can help to extend your knowledge on topics related to your major and allow you to network with people of similar interests.

The list of Greek opportunities go on and on. In addition to the options displayed here, there are religious, service and honors organizations as well, all worth looking into and joining. If you’re starting to miss things from home, a cultural Greek organization could be a great way to reconnect with your roots. ing between classes, stay alert for oncoming bikes. If you listen to music as you walk, turn down the volume or take one earbud out so you can better be aware of your surroundings.

Keep an eye out for stray Veorides in bushes and on the ground at night. They’re strewn everywhere.

You may be surprised to find those blue bicycles poking out of the bushes by the ARC or even in the middle of a lawn. When trudging home in the cold and damp from the UGL one late night, you may find yourself stumbling over them if you don’t keep an eye out. Make sure you stick to sidewalks, and even then try to be on alert for a surprise Veoride parked in just the right spot between street lamps and under foliage so as to make it invisible.

Try to stay to the sides of a sidewalk or pathway; Veorides are chunky bois, and it will be much safer for you and for a biker if you do so.

Even as you walk in the cold light of day and safely on the sidewalks, you may not be safe from a bump or a nudge from a Veorider dutifully on his or her way to class. For your sake, the sake of bicyclists of all stripes and even your fellow pedestrians, please stick to the right (not left) side of the sidewalk.

These simple tips should help you avoid getting clobbered by a clumsy Veorider while innocently making your way through the September heat to class. By the same token, if you decide to take up Veoriding please be aware of the pedestrians and drivers around you. Use hand signals, the bell on those bikes’ handlebars and plain old common sense to be a considerate bicyclist.

Anyone who has stepped foot in ChampaignUrbana in the past two years has inevitably seen them. The jokesters on the University Facebook page have raucously abused them. And nearly everyone in the vicinity of the University seems to have a very strong opinion about them.

Yes, it is clear Veorides have truly taken the on-campus community by storm.

Veorides, as any seasoned University student knows, are public bicycles parked freely all over campus, available for use through a smartphone app and the cost of a quarter.

The unfortunate confluence of easily accessible public bicycles and 33,000 drunkards with the tendency to enjoy delinquent pranks yields all-too-common irritants when walking to class in the morning. As you make your way through campus for the first few weeks of the semester, make sure to keep the following tips and tricks in mind so as to ensure as peaceful a commute as possible — and even take advantage of the Veorides as you go.

Look out for Veoride bikers when crossing the street — or sidewalk, or lawn, or hall. You never know.

Too many Illini have wound up as deer in the bike lights — that is, they step out confidently into the street without looking for oncoming Veorides. Make sure you keep in mind not only where the cars are on the street but also where the bike lanes are directed. It will help you avoid painful collisions and even injury!

Adjust to U.S. life as an international student JJ KIM

If language is an issue, it’s a good idea to reverse the frequency of the languages you use. For instance, if your mother tongue is Korean and you need to learn English, it helps to force yourself to speak only English because, according to Newsweek, it is nearly impossible to learn a new language and speak it as fluently as their mother tongue.

Lastly, try to avoid staying in too often when coming on campus. It’s easy to form your own bubble by staying in all the time, and while trying to fit into a new culture, not going out may prove detrimental. While I’m sure introverts disagree with this, by going out I don’t mean going to bars or partying all the time. It also means finding your favorite restaurant, a place to meditate or your go-to midnight snack joint. The feeling of isolation and uneasiness begins to relieve itself the more you get to know the surrounding area.

It definitely won’t be a simple move, and there will be numerous challenges to overcome, but by following these tips, hopefully you can take advantage of the wonderful opportunity at hand.

As a former international student, I understand the myriad of obstacles one may face on their way to making a smooth transition into a foreign country. Adjusting to a new way of life requires equal parts self-motivation and teamwork.

When it comes to what you can do yourself, there are only a few crucial tips you should keep in mind.

For starters, don’t be afraid to talk to anyone. Be the one to start the conversation because getting to know the people around you has several benefits. You can find out about things going on around campus, who to avoid talking to and, most importantly, you can form friendships.

This goes without saying, but building solid friendships exponentially decreases the stresses of being an international student.

Having someone to talk to in person is a great way to relieve tension after a tough day.

It’s intimidating to initiate anything in life, especially in a brand new environment and it might take a little longer for others, but doing this is an investment in your future that will in turn also make you more approachable to others.

As a person who has lived in the Midwest for the past 20 years, I have grown to love the culture and the people of the region. From the corn obsession to the widespread hospitality, there can be so much to love about living here.

I find Midwestern people possess a certain attitude, something hard to find in different parts of the country. A neighborly attribute that makes us lookout for one another. You have the people who would walk your dog if you broke your foot. The neighbor who would shovel your driveway during the winter if you were feeling sick. I could go on and on with examples of kindness. I would even go as far as to describe Midwesterners as the “Canadians” of the United States.

Take this important advice: Join, join, join KELLY JOHNSON EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

When you first get to campus you will probably be feeling overwhelmed, alone and excited.

Let me first address those fears and let you know these feelings aren’t isolated to international students. Even as an Illinois resident coming with a lot of kids from my high school, I was still experiencing all these emotions.

The biggest tip you will hear again and again on campus is to join.

Join, join, join.

If you have any interest in a club or activity, join.

You can always back out later if you realize this organization isn’t for you, but I promise you joining any club will help you meet people and make you feel less alone.

If you’ve ever had any desire to do stand up, join a stand up group. Love Harry Potter? Don’t worry there are Harry Potter clubs for you — and classes for that matter.

Joining a club will help you make friends you might have never met if you didn’t. As an advertising major I never thought some of my best friends would be a Chemical Engineering major and an art major. But joining a variety of clubs helped me meet them. Some of my clubs aren’t my favorite things in the whole world,

but the people are. I’m so thankful for the different organizations I’m in for introducing me to some of my favorite people.

Another great thing about joining organizations is you learn a lot about yourself. I came into Illinois as an education major, but after joining The Daily Illini — which I highly recommend to everyone —it helped me realize I really love media and advertising, specifically.

Had I never joined I may have never discovered my passion for advertising.

So, just join, join, join.

Here’s some controversial advice: Even if you just want to join a club because your friend is joining, do it. As long as you’re getting yourself out there to try new things and meet new people, it’ll be a great experience.

If you don’t know where to start, you can always look online at Illinois’ list of RSO’s on campus. Make sure to head out to Quad Day also; that’s where a ton of RSO’s will be hanging around the Main Quad giving students more information. It will be overwhelming, but it will also be totally worth it.

It’ll be easiest for you to join clubs right at the beginning of the year, as that is when clubs are most actively seeking new members. You can always join second semester, too — or your third, or fourth, or fifth — but joining lots

It’s OK to feel homesick as a college student KATIE POWERS BUZZ EDITOR

For plenty of students, the beginning of their first semester at Illinois can come with a challenging transition that includes a desire to return home. If you find yourself with this familiar pang in your stomach or a lump in your throat during the first weeks of the semester, remember you aren’t alone. There are so many students on campus who are struggling with being so far away from home for the first time.

Don’t be afraid to open up to the people around you. If you’re comfortable with, talk to your roommates and floormates and let them know you’re struggling. Since they’re equipped with that knowledge, you might be able to offer you some extra support. You might even find out they are going through something similar.

Your resident assistants and academic advisers can also provide insight and reminders that this experience is all too common.

But the international experience is unique from the experience of a domestic student; you might be thousands of miles away from home, dealing with a long time difference in communicating with friends and family or facing the stress and excitement of adapting to a new culture. You might find that homesickness impacts you in a different way than some

of your peers and that your transition is happening at a different pace. So as you navigate international student life at the University, be patient with yourself. It takes time for a place to feel like home so it’s OK if not everything falls into place right away. Fortunately, the University offers resources that might make the transition a little bit easier.

A valuable resource for struggling with homesickness is the Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Relations, which offers a wide selection of programs throughout the academic year specifically for international students to adjust to life on campus and to learn about the campus community. The GLOBE program offers international students an opportunity to connect with domestic students and share aspects of their cultures with one another and to build genuine friendships doing so. The OIIR also frequently partners with programs such as the Asian American Cultural House, New Student Programs and University Housing for dinners, lecture events and outings intended for cultural awareness and connection. They also offer trips and programs during school breaks for students who might not be able to travel home.

But remember: If homesickness is interfering with your day-to-day life and preventing you

from being successful academically and socially long after the initial excitement of move-in, it may be time to seek help. The Counseling Center offers mental health services to all University students including programs specific to the experience of international students.

These include Cultural Transition and Adaptation programs and the Interconnect Dinner and Dialogue series, hosted in partnership with

the ISSS, OIIR, Asian American Cultural Center and Women’s Resources Center.

Finally, don’t forget to take the time to keep up with your friends and family at home. Frequent phone calls and Skype sessions are vital for maintaining those relationships and keeping you connected with your roots. kmp2@dailyillini.com

Prepare for Illinois winters the right way JILLIAN LITTLE ASSISTANT BUZZ EDITOR

Right now, Illinois is burning up. People are trying to beat the heat by jumping into Lake Michigan, getting tons of slushies and blasting the AC. Some of us might be suffering in this heat, but don’t let that fool you. Underestimating the severity of our winters is a big mistake.

There are going to be days when you walk outside and the degrees will be in the negatives.

However, if the weather is above -10 degrees Fahrenheit, chances are the University won’t cancel classes for the day. Here are some suggestions to make those winter months go by with ease.

Winter gear is a must

This is pretty obvious but a very important point because some people don’t consider this.

Coats, hats, mitten and boots are the way to go for surviving any winter. They’ll give you the warmth you need when traveling to classes and can potentially serve as conversation starters by people on the street if you have “drip.” Also, if you’re going out with friends to a party or a bar, bring a coat instead of intentionally forgetting it because it “ruins the outfit.” There have been cases where people have developed seri-

ous cases of frostbite leading to amputation of fingers and toes.

Black ice is a real thing

Whether it’s driving in a car or walking, black ice, or thin layers of ice on the ground, ruin almost every winter. On the positive, it’s fun pretending like you’re on an ice-skating rink, and it’s hilarious seeing a friend wipe out on the Main Quad. However, black ice is dangerous and serious falls can lead to a concussion or other injuries. Always be careful where you’re walking.

If you encounter black ice on the ground, don’t AKI AKHAURI THE DAILY ILLINI freak out and flail your arms around. I tend to waddle like a penguin over icy patches, which Snow covers the ground in front of the Siebel Center for Computer Science on February 2. Winter seems to work fine since I only fell once last year. months in Illinois can feel extra long if you aren’t prepared for the cold weather.

Leave the house early

Commutes take a longer time once the snow starts piling up on the sides of the street. More people are going to want to take the bus, which ultimately leads to a thrown-off morning if you take the bus. To combat this, wake up at least 15 minutes earlier than you did during the fall months. It’s going to be a struggle for those who have early morning classes, but the extra time gives you enough leeway if you’re running late.

If you’re so sick your eyes are swollen shut and you can’t breathe, do not go to class — or outside for that matter. If you do, you’ll probably make worse. By going to class, you’re also risking the spread of a sickness onto others.

Living away from home may take some time to adjust, but it is an experience you should make the most of while you can! College campuses are catered to students in so many ways, and there are tons of opportunities for you to make the most of your experience on campus while you are a student.

Venture out

Some students are constantly stuck in their rooms or apartments all day when there are so many other places to be around campus. Take the opportunity to do your homework in a new location every once in a while. Try studying in a new library or coffee shop, and don’t be afraid to ask your friends to join you for a study date.

Have school spirit

So many college students pass up opportunities to attend sporting events, but you only have four years to show your school spirit while you can! Try to attend an event for all the different teams around campus. Check out a tennis match, gymnastics meet or a track and field meet. Dress up in your orange and blue, and super fan for the football and basketball games. You are lucky to be an Illini, so take some time out of the week to enjoy it!

The Main Quad is a beautiful place to sit with friends and get some fresh air in for the day.

You don’t always have to do your homework or studying inside. Take some time to study on the Main Quad, outside the Krannert Center for Performing Arts or on the porch of the Illini Union.

It is healthy to get some Vitamin D and fresh air after a long day of classes. Enjoy the beauty of the campus with every chance you get.

Enjoy the nightlife

A lot of students hit the bars routinely every weekend, but some only hit the bars once every few months. Going out can be a nice break from studying and gives you the chance to socialize, meet new people and let loose after a long few weeks of exams. Even if you are not a going-out type of person, you still deserve a fun night of being out with your friends. College bars are also a great place to see people outside of class and meet other people you would not see in your major.

Overall, your college experience is short and is your last few years of living with all of your friends before you enter the real world of working all day every day. Seize every opportunity of enjoying your time on campus and being a student, utilize your resources and surroundings and remember to take breaks from the books! solive7@dailyillini.com

Once upon a time, I had a brief stint as an resident assistant in a dorm with predominantly international students. From my residents, I learned about other countries and cultures. I learned about different customs and cuisines.

But above all else, I learned the value of traveling.

After breaks and long weekends, residents would excitedly share the new places they had been and new experiences they had had.

Of course, this isn’t realistic for everyone. International student tuition is exorbitantly high at the University — and is only going up — and can be twice that of in-state students. But for those who have the means to travel, please do.

Champaign-Urbana certainly has its gems, but you can use your study abroad as an opportunity to check destinations off your bucket list and garner more experiences.

You can plan plenty of weekend trips to nearby cities and attractions, but there are other offbeat opportunities to travel in and out of the state, too.

bubble but actually widens your definition and understanding of the world. Wherever you go, you’ll likely learn something new about a place or even yourself.

That’s not to say you should feel an urgency to travel every weekend or even that often. International students can be here for a semester or several years depending on their course of study and program length. If you have the time and resources, it can be a rewarding opportunity that you should absolutely take advantage of.

The U.S. is big, and the world is wide. I encourage you to try Southern BBQ. See an ocean. Escape the frigid cold; you’ll thank me later.

When undergoing a big life change (such as moving out of the country for college), it is very possible well-intentioned friends, family and even distant acquaintances will offer unsolicited, repetitive advice wracked with cliches.

This can certainly become irritating, especially after the third or fourth time around.

But, speaking from experience, there is truth to be found in cliches — surprisingly enough — and choosing one of these to be your personal mantra moving through this school year can’t hurt.

Only time will tell

When first arriving at the University, it can be hard to gauge what life as a student here will look like for the years ahead. Finding a place for oneself and adjusting to a new routine can be challenging, to say the least — especially on your own in a new country.

Find your home away from home in others SAMANTHA BOYLE NEWS EDITOR

Whether it’s an academic club, social club, Greek life or sports, it’s an important part of college to find something for you that’s a home away from home (especially if home is an ocean or two away).

Going to college is a good time to try to figure out what “home” means to you because for many, this is the first time you’re away from what you grew up calling home. But with feelings of homesickness and longing to go back to that home, maybe it’s time to try to find another one.

Coming to a big college from another country can be a difficult transition. It’s a time of new environments, new foods, new people, new experiences and plenty of other new things. These experiences can be overwhelming ones if you feel like you’re going through them on your own.

At the beginning of each fall semester, almost every RSO sets up a table or booth on the Main Quad to offer new students, old students and transfer students some information about clubs they can join.

I can almost guarantee there will be at least one, if not more, clubs that will be of interest to you in some way. These clubs don’t only offer

this sense of community that can act as your home away from home during your four years on campus. This is often where people also meet their lifelong friends who go beyond just the years spent in college.

There are a number of social fraternities and sororities as well as academic ones that can become a good community for somebody.

However, Greek life also isn’t for everyone, and that’s OK. There’s more for you to be a part of — certainly even more opportunities than what I’ll mention in this column.

Perhaps joining an intermural sport or club sport is the right move for you. This might be a good opportunity to join something you have always wanted to try, because why not now?

A simple guide to American coffee*

Espresso Espresso is the foundation for most, if not all, forms of coffee. Espresso is made by running hot water through finely-ground coffee beans. When ordering an espresso, you can get it in one, two, or three shots.

Cappuccino Cappuccinos. How to describe Cappuccinos. Pure bliss? Heaven in a cup? Both? Cappuccinos are made of espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam.

Latte Lattes and cappuccinos closely related, but not identical. They have different ratios of steamed milk and milk foam. Cappuccinos typically have more steamed milk, and lattes have more milk foam.

Mocha Mochas are, well, fancy to say the least. In addition to espresso and steamed milk, mochas also have chocolate syrup and whipped cream.

Americano Americanos, while basic in their ingredients are anything but that. Americanos are an acquired taste.

They made with espresso and hot water, making them bitter at first, but one can learn to love them.

The University of Illinois features a huge population of students from around the world. It is a set of some really diverse people. This, of course, unfortunately means some students have to stay on campus for the fall, winter, spring and summer breaks when many students have gone home for break.

While the vast majority of students may be gone, that does not mean that the campus is dead.

There is always plenty to do in ChampaignUrbana, you just have to look around.

Before break lets out, ask around and see who will stay on campus for the break. Now, you may think all you have to do is ask your friends, but think about who you interact with every day.

Of course, you should ask your friends if they are staying on campus, but ask others as well, such as your coworkers at your job or members of your club team or RSO. If there are friends or colleagues staying on campus, do not feel shy to ask if they would like to hang out. Many times, it all it takes is the initiative to get the ball rolling.

If for whatever reason no one you know personally is staying on campus, use social media to find people who are. The University is lucky to have a very active subreddit, filled with many people stuck on campus looking to pass time as well. Many times, Reddit users will create GroupMe group chats so people can plan events and get to meet one another.

So, you’ve got people to hang out with, but what are you to do?

If you are looking to stay within University limits, why not check out some of the buildings on campus. For example, if you are not an Engineering student, chances are you are not regularly on the North Quad. Why not take the time to explore it and see what it has to offer?

You never know, you may find your favorite study spot.

If buildings don’t interest you, perhaps nature does. The Japan House offers a breathtaking view of a beautiful lake filled with koi fish, along with small nature walk trail. Beside the Japan

House is the Idea Garden, another aesthetically pleasing location close to campus.

Getting off the University campus, you can still head out to Green Street and take part in the night life. Remember, the businesses are open year-round, and they will be pleased to serve you.

If you are able to keep a car on campus, consider checking out downtown Champaign and downtown Urbana. There are plenty of restaurants to try at both locations, and it is always nice to get to get to experience what life is like to those outside of the University. Going even further off campus, you can check out the towns in the outskirts of C-U like Savoy.

Finally, for many people, including myself, nothing beats a drive in the countryside, literally.

You’re surrounded by nothing but corn! Enjoy the empty roads! Consider driving during a sunset. It will make for a nostalgic experience. Just make sure to have a charged phone with a GPS, just in case!

They say New York is the city that never sleeps, but I disagree. I believe any city, including C-U, can become a city that never sleeps.

Being away from home can be distressing for a multitude of reasons, not the least of which is having the distinct discomfort of not recognizing any of your food choices. But, international students, have no fear — eating like an American doesn’t necessarily mean giving up food from your native country. In fact, it often means the opposite.

America is a myriad of cultures, and the cuisine reflects this. In the majority of American cities one can find dozens of different types of eateries, ranging in menu from Mediterranean to Chinese to Mexican to food from Jupiter.

Campustown is no different. Housing an array of restaurants, Champaign is sure to provide you with food options that’ll make you feel at home. Even the dorm cafeterias host specialty restaurants like Taste of Asia and La Cocina on certain days.

There is a catch, however. Though eating like an American doesn’t mean you have to eliminate your native foods from your diet, there are certain rules of etiquette that come with dining in America.

Firstly, tipping your server is a must. A tip of 20% of the bill is considered polite, though if your waitress goes out of her way to keep your drink filled, or your waiter is consistently cracking perfectly timed jokes, you’re

welcome to tip more than that general rule.

While they won’t cart you off to prison for not tipping, it is a huge breach of courtesy. The majority of a server’s pay comes from her tips, and she often make less than minimum wage.

As with any rule, there are exceptions to this policy. You are not expected to tip at fast food restaurants, ice cream parlors, food trucks or anywhere else someone does not come over to your table to take your order.

Tip jars are often left out in such establishments, and if you really think a tip is deserved, tip away.

Secondly, Americans might eat meals at different times than you’re used to.

Breakfast starts the day around 7 or 8 a.m. This is often a smaller meal eaten at home — maybe toast, a couple of scrambled eggs, bacon or cereal. Lunch typically begins around 11 a.m. or noon and, as with breakfast, remains on the lighter side of meals.

Dinner is the big one in the United States.

For example, when eating something like a steak, Americans use their dominant hand to hold their knife while the non-dominant hand holds the fork. Unlike many of our European counterparts, Americans then set the knife down and return the fork to their dominant hand to resume eating.

As a general rule, to eat like an American, always wield your utensils in your dominant hand.

It seems every spring semester, and sometimes fall, I say goodbye to more and more friends as they embark on a journey to a new country to study abroad and embrace the culture, food and life as an exchange student. Each year I live vicariously through their Instagram posts and Snapchat stories in foreign places while I’m stuck in Champaign.

Studying abroad can be expensive, and some students’ schedules don’t allow the time or classes in a foreign university; however, that doesn’t mean traveling during your four years here has to be expensive.

Although I won’t have the option to study abroad during my time in college, I still found a way to spend the summer abroad and get paid for it, and I encourage everyone to find a way to see the world, too. Here are some easy ways I found to make the most of my time exploring the world as a broke college student that wasn’t a pre-paid study abroad experience.

Become an au pair

An au pair is an international nanny that lives with a host family, babysits their children for 20-25 hours a week and gets paid weekly. Childcare can be a tiring job, but when you get free room and board, food and are living in a foreign country, all the pros definitely outweigh the cons.

This summer, I found a host family on AuPair. com and after Skyping them, I booked my flights to live in Spain for three months. It was the most

Go abroad, but don’t study rewarding experience, and I’m so happy I got to experience life abroad on my own. I learned about the history, culture, language and ate all the paella my heart desired — and got paid for it! If you enjoy working with children, I highly suggest being an au pair for the summer.

Volunteer at a work exchange

Like an au pair, there are several programs young people can join if their looking for a lowcost way to travel the world. One organization called WWOOF connects volunteers to organic farms around the world in exchange for free room, board and sometimes food. Volunteers can expect to work on average six hours a day, six days a week and have ample free time to explore the country.

Look for abroad internships

When I think of a college internship, making coffee runs and spending a lot of time in an office under fluorescent lights come to my mind.

Gaining internship experience and international experience will shine on a resume, so why not kill two birds with one stone? You’re bound to find an internship in business, healthcare, international relations and much more abroad; you just have to look. tpokor3@dailyillini.com

The Illinois International website states “the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has enjoyed more than a century of close engagement with the People’s Republic of China.” It

With the number of Chinese restaurants on campus, it’s clear Illinois has a huge Chinese international student population. For the Fall 2018 semester, international students from China made up 5,725 of the 10,577 total international scholars on campus. That’s 54% of the international student population. The next largest demographic, Indian international students, come in at a distant 1,458 students, or 13% of the total international student population.

While many of the attractions when you arrive on campus come in the form of a place, activity or food, one underestimated asset to your student tool belt is you have access to University libraries — wait, don’t stop reading. I promise there’s more than dusty old books in those old buildings that dot the campus map, and there’s even more on their online databases. Campus libraries offer extraordinary resources to students and faculty at the University of Illinois alone, and many people never take a minute to visit during their years Here’s a taste of what you might find if you venture into a library.

Learn a new language

What many people don’t realize is your status as a student gives you free access to language learning programs like Rosetta Stone and Pimsleur to help you learn over 50 individual languages. There are also numerous dictionaries and translators available to aid you in any language-learning quest you may be on.

To access these programs, go to the University library website, and search the library

catalog for “language learning” to see a full list of these resources.

See famous original works firsthand

Take advantage of technology rentals

The University libraries have capitalized on modern student needs through offering free downloads for applications and access to rentable technology.

For incoming students who may have purchased a new laptop for college, Microsoft Office is available for free to download for University students. Lynda.com, a skill-learning website, is also available for free to students, offering tutorials on any skill you wish to learn.

The Media Commons at the Undergraduate Library includes free rentals on materials for audio production, video editing, video production, mobile prototyping and gaming, as well as free access to media spaces for filming and recording projects you may be working on. The Media Commons also offers coaching and consultation appointments if you need guidance or have particular questions about how to approach a certain project.

Rentable technology also includes any kind of laptop or phone charger, adapter or cable you may have forgotten for your eight-hour cramming session at the UGL.

Sometimes even dusty, old books have something to offer. Located in the Main Library, the Rare Books & Manuscripts Library both temporarily and permanently houses first editions of the works of famous authors, artists and individuals in general from all over the world and all sorts of disciplines. From early editions of works from John Milton, Shakespeare and many more, there is something there for every person. They also have rotating exhibits showcasing the lives and efforts of the people we may look to for guidance each day in our studies; recently, the typewriter Hugh Hefner used during his college days at the University was on display.

To see what they have to you offer, you must first create an account online and bring a form of identification the day of your visit.

If you are moving onto campus for the longterm, the first thing you will need to do will be to find the best places to buy any essentials you’re lacking or couldn’t bring with. To save yourself the trouble of looking around aimlessly for the things you need, here are a few of the best ways to get the essentials while on campus.

For the most convenience

For those who live off-campus without a car or just don’t have the time or the will to go out shopping, Amazon delivery is always an option. Just about everything from school supplies, electronics, kitchenware and everything in between can be found on Amazon. You can even order dry foods like ramen cups to have part of your groceries delivered. Students can get access to a six-month trial of Amazon Prime if you want to get your packages delivered with free one- or two-day shipping.

is your best bet. Aside from the plethora of restaurants and eateries located across Green street, there is a Walgreens stocked with not only food, but basic toiletries, medicine and household items. A little further down is County Market, which while being more expensive than the grocery stores off of campus, is open 24 hours a day and is within walking distance of campus.

Located on the Main Quad, we also have the Union. If you need a quick bite or are looking for electronics accessories like headphones or charging cables, stores like the Tech Zone and Quad Shop are available, as well as the various restaurant chains downstairs.

Online groceries

If you’re willing to spend a bit extra, there are a few options to have groceries delivered straight to your front door. Schnucks and Instacart are two of the options you have to get food delivered. You simply scroll through the catalog choosing which foods you’d like to add to your cart, then choose a delivery time window for the groceries to be delivered.

Each order tacks on a delivery fee, and if the delivery service finds that the item you want isn’t in stock, they may substitute another potentially more expensive item. You have committed, signed up for classes and are all set for your first day on campus.

While registration on campus may have provided you with enough insight into navigating your first semester, you may find the following apps incredibly useful while getting accustomed to campus.

Coursicle

Couldn’t get into the class/section you wanted? Stuck in an 8 a.m. class? Coursicle works wonders when it comes to scheduling conflicts. Let’s say the section of RHET 105: Rhetoric and Composition you originally wanted to sign up for is full; simply type the course CRN number into the app and wait for Coursicle to work its magic.

Coursicle allows you to track two classes for free or buy the unlimited, premium version and track as many as you like. For many freshmen, this app is a great way to combat late registration times.

Bus app, you may soon find several Illini using the blue Transit app. Specifically designed for all bus stops within the Champaign-Urbana, the Transit app provides a faster and more upto-date list of available busses at every stop.

This app allows you to see how soon the next bus is coming to each nearby stops, and it even lets you mark some stops as favorites for quicker access.

For many new students, understanding how to get around on campus can seem incredibly intimidating at first, but with the right tools, many will find it incredibly easy.

Uber

While Uber may be common place for many people, you never know when you might need a ride somewhere.

Uber is a great tool for getting around campus at any time of the day. Whether you are out late with your friends, you have an interview across town or you need to make a train, Uber is there for you.

Uber even lets you pool with other people to reduce fairs and minimize waiting time. With so many available drivers in the Campustown area, Uber makes a great option for students While the University may suggest their Illini on-the-go.

Transit for CUMTD

Venmo

A must of coming to college is setting up a debit/credit card if you have not already. Once in place, why not make it easier by linking it to an account with instant access?

Venmo has exploded over the past couple years due to its incredibly convenience and access in social settings. Whether you are spotting for your friends on a night out or buying a donut on the quad, Venmo allows you to easily make a quick transaction without even opening up your wallet.

Using instant transaction apps such as these can be of great convenience; just make sure you don’t forget where that money is coming from.

Blackboard

Once your classes have populated to your Illinois Compass 2g, you will be able to read course syllabi, buy relevant textbooks and find your classrooms. Compass holds an extension of its services in an app called Blackboard.

After logging in with your NetID, you will be able to set up grade notifications, instructor updates and even download files on your phone for those last minute assignments. This will be of great use on-the-go or anxiously waiting for a midterm grade.

Cycle like a pro from day one on campus JOSE ZEPEDA ASSISTANT DAYTIME EDITOR

To many, the college experience can be an overwhelming first. You are living on your own for the first time, you have to manage time on your own, the whole ordeal. I’m sure most of you would appreciate any help you can get with your new problems. Consider getting a bicycle to help with transportation and time management problems.

Acquiring a bicycle

There are several options to choose from.

You can purchase a new or used bicycle. Prices range around $50 to over $300, depending on the store and the bicycle itself.

For an affordable, refurbished bicycle, consider visiting the Campus Bike Center, located at 608 E. Pennsylvania Ave. in Champaign.

There are also several bicycle shops in the Champaign-Urbana area that offer new and used bicycles for sale, as well as knowledge to help find the best bike for you. A list of local shops can be found here. Alternatively, stores like Walmart, Target and Dick’s Sporting Goods sell bicycles as well. I personally

do not recommend buying a very expensive bike. Unfortunately, the bicycles will never get indoor protection and will slowly begin to rust from exposure to rain and snow. Why spend more on something that will rust at the same rate as something cheap?

You can also rent a bicycle. Many local bicycle shops offer plans to rent out a bike for the school year. This can help if you do not want to keep the bike but still want to have one to call your own for the school year.

You can use a dockless bicycle. VeoRide is an app-based, dockless bicycle service offered on campus. To use it, download the app and open it. Follow the on-screen prompts, and you are ready to go. VeoRide has two different bicycles students can use.

The first one is a regular bicycle. It is free to unlock and costs 50 cents every 15 minutes it is in use. The second one is an electric battery-assisted bicycle. It costs $1 to unlock and 15 cents every minute in use. Because VeoRides are dockless bicycles, they can be left anywhere. The only problem is VeoRide bikes are scarce and may not readily be available in your particular area, when necessary.

I have maintained my bicycle by filling the tires with air and spraying WD-40 on the chain. For most people, this is all you have to do.

If you do face a problem with your bicycle outside of your hands, the bicycle can be taken to the Campus Bike Center. If you aren’t a huge sports fan — much like me when I first entered Memorial Stadium during Sights & Sounds my freshman year — you’ll be quick to realize sporting events mean a lot to the people at the University of Illinois.

While there may be much to be done in terms of winning with some teams, all of the student-athletes on campus are incredibly talented, and the events in which they compete are tons of fun — and better yet, the University wants students to engage in these opportunities and offer free tickets as a bonus, so be sure to check your email!

Take advantage of one of the many rewarding parts of attending a Big Ten university by grabbing a few friends (and a few tickets) and heading to a game.

If you can’t list the starting roster of the Chicago Blackhawks from memory — or you’ve never been to a game — here’s a guide to the best places to begin your journey as an Illini sports fan.

Use transportation to conquer campus size around on foot. Something that really helped me out when I was new to campus was runWhen I first arrived on campus my fresh- ning. Especially while it’s still nice and warm, man year, the size of the campus was incred- use the campus as your gym! There are so ibly daunting. Even as a junior, I’m still finding many nice places to run so it can definitely new pockets on campus I had no idea existed.

Here are some ideas to help you find your way around campus like a pro.

help make the campus a little easier to navigate. During the first few weeks of school, I’d find myself thinking, “Oh, I remember this place! I saw it when I was running!” This definitely helped me map out the campus in my mind.

Learn the bus routes

You’ve probably seen a lot of the teal bikes on campus. If you don’t have your own bike, these can be very helpful in a pinch. Get the VeoRide app on your phone, scan a bike’s QR code and go. This may require a sign-up your first time around, but once you have everything set up, the bikes are quick and easy to use. The regular bikes cost 50 cents per 15 minutes and the e-bikes are $1 to unlock, then 50¢ per 1 minute. While the e-bikes are pretty pricey, they can be helpful as a last resort when you need to be somewhere and you’ve missed your bus.

You’ve probably heard about how important the bus routes can be to your campus navigation success, and I’m here to tell you how true that is. There is a handful of apps that allow you to familiarize yourself with the bus stops and routes all around or even off campus. Some apps include Transit for CUMTD, Illini Bus, UIUC Bus, UIUC Transit, My Bus Helper: MTD and CU Transit.

To avoid getting lost and being late to some of your first classes, a last resort can be checking the map on your phone or computer. This can allow you to get an aerial view of the campus to at least get a general idea of the location of your destination.

What’s better than going out and getting to know the lay of the land? Having a reason to get to know the lay of the land!
