College of medicine approved

The Board of Trustees appointed new deans for the College of Business, the Graduate College and the College of Law at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign during a meeting held Tuesday at their two-day retreat at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

The respective deans will be Jeffrey Brown, Wojtek Chodzko-Zajko and Vikram Amar.

They also approved “Affiliation Agreement with the Carle Foundation Establishing the ‘Carle Illinois College of Medicine’” at Urbana, as well as an increase in application fees at both the Urbana-Champaign and Chicago campuses.

The meeting began with an executive session that lasted until 9:30 a.m., when the public session and regular meeting resumed.

Following introductions and a welcome

from Chancellor Michael D. Amiridis, the meeting then proceeded to presentations and reports from several officers and highranking employees at the University of Illinois.

The initial report came from Vice President and Chief Financial Officer and Comptroller Walter K. Knorr regarding the financial situation and expectations for the University.

Throughout his presentation, he voiced his concerns about the delays and slowdown of government operation in Springfield, in relation to negotiations for a new state budget.

“Higher education makes up 11 percent of the total operating budget for the University of Illinois,” Knorr said. “We would expect with this continued delay that we’re going to see a delay in our own operating budget. … The campuses and University administration have been working on a number of budget-reduction scenarios.”

The next report was given by Professor and Chair of Conference Donald Chambers. That report focused on emphasizing the mission and goals of a public university to the U.S. and its citizens.

“One of the expectations of a learning community is to produce critical thinkers and expand and export knowledge,” Chambers said. “In terms of a public university, to meet the demands of a society, Abraham Lincoln characterized government as of the people, by the people and for the people.”

This marked the last time Chambers would address the Board of Trustees as Chair of Conference, and his report was concluded with a farewell and thank you from Chairman Edward McMillan and President Timothy Killeen.

President and CEO of Illinois Foundation James H. Moore then began his presentation, which focused on contributions for University of Illinois funds from non-federal sources. His emphasis was on alum-

ni support, and he eagerly expressed the opportunities the University has to improve fundraising.

“We have no shortage of opportunities with the size of our alumni community,” Moore said. “We need to set strategies that are going to get donors engaged.”

Moore then gave the floor to Loren Taylor, president of the Illinois Alumni Association, who similarly discussed the continued need for engagement and communication with the alumni community for Illinois, and the benefits that come from such an engagement.

The meeting continued into Committee reports before proceeding to voting of agenda items.

The Board of Trustees unanimously approved all 29 items on the vocal vote agenda. The eight items on the roll call agenda were passed, with a few abstentions.

Birth order has little affect on personality, intelligence MARIAH SCHAEFER STAFF WRITER

A study published in the October 2015 issue of the Journal of Research in Personality shows that the order in which a family’s children are born does not significantly affect the children’s personality or intelligence.

University of Illinois psychology professor Brent Roberts conducted the analysis along with University of Houston assistant professor of social psychology Rodica Damian, who was a postdoctoral researcher at the time.

“We were motivated to conduct the study because we are interested in the developmental experiences that lead to personality development,” Roberts said in an email.

“Birth order is one of the most common reasons given by both researchers and laypeople about why people possess certain personality traits, so we thought it would be a good idea to test.”

Damian said they did not collect the sample on which the study is based. Instead, they received data collected by the American Institutes of Research with a sample size of 377,000 high school students.

She said this archival sample is called Project Talent and is publicly available for research purposes.

The psychology professors’ research paper, which can be found online, stated that high school students who were only children or were twins, triplets or quadruplets were excluded from the study because that is a common recommendation in birth order research.

“We realized early on that the data con-

tained enough information on birth order to do a good study of its relation to personality and intelligence,” Roberts said.

In order to control for potential confounds, the study relied on a between-family design and many background factors, such as age, socioeconomic status and family structure.

According to the research paper, the study found there is a very small association between birth order and personality.

The average absolute partial correlation was .02.

For birth order and intelligence, the average absolute partial correlation was .04, which is higher than the association between birth order and personality but is still very small.

“Social scientists often use statistical significance as a guide to determine whether an effect exists, but statistical significance is not only the result of an effect existing but is also affected greatly by sample size,” Roberts said. “Therefore, with the study’s huge sample size, even the tiny effects we found were statistically significant.

“We had to rely on the magnitude of the effects as a way to interpret the meaning of the results. It turned out the magnitude of the results was very, very small,” Roberts said.

Damian said it took about a week to analyze the data provided, but the paper was written about two years ago.

“The whole publication process takes a while,” she said. “You start to analyze the data, then you write the paper and then you submit it—then get rejected.”

not always happy with the professors’ findings and made it difficult to publish their work.

“The most challenging part of the study was responding to negative reviews from scientists who still believe that birth order has a noticeable relation to personality and intelligence,” he said.

He said birth order is a “perfect fulcrum for understanding why we should not rely on anecdotal experience over science” because it is almost everyone’s experience that there are birth order effects on personality, but that is mostly because birth

order is “perfectly confounded with age.”

Roberts explained that because firstborns are always older, that gives them the chance to develop more than their younger siblings.

“That means that, on average, firstborns will be different than their younger brothers and sisters, not as a result of birth order but really because they are older,” Roberts said. “The only way to detect this fact is through examining large samples of kids and the appropriate statistical analyses using the best possible statistical controls.”

Technology improves robot mower The Daily Illini sits down for a Q&A with professor Soon-Jo Chung MARIAH SCHAEFER STAFF WRITER

A new omnidirectional, vision-based localization and mapping system is being developed at the University.

Aerospace engineering assistant professor Soon-Jo Chung, electrical and computer engineering professor Seth Hutchinson and mechanical science and engineering Ph.D. candidate Junho Yang are working on a navigation system that will allow objects like lawn mowers to safely and autonomously function.

They have partnered with John Deere in hopes of bringing this navigation system technology into the company’s robotic lawn mowers and introducing them to the U.S. market.

The Daily Illini spoke with Chung about how the technology they are developing works.

The Daily Illini: How did the idea for a robotic lawn mower come about?

Soon-Jo Chung: The development of a robotic lawn mower is not really the focus of our project. John Deere is already selling robotic mowers in the marketplace.

It’s just that they have not introduced their robotic mowers to the U.S. market; they are selling them in Europe.

What we are doing here is to further improve the autonomy and performance, or maybe convenience, of this robotic mower, so potentially it can be introduced to the U.S. market.

DI: What exactly does your research project look like?

SJC: Basically, it’s a work between myself and my colleague Seth Hutchinson in electrical and computer engineering. We are all part of faculty at the Coordinated Science Lab; it’s an inter-disciplinary research unit in the College of Engineering.

Our project is to look into using some computer vision and some autonomous recursions to replace the existing navigation system of this John Deere robotic mower.

The concept that they are using is that they use these boundary wires that have to be embedded or installed prior to first use, so that they contain this mower within the boundary.

It’s inconvenient, and if you move to another area or another home, then you

have to reinstall these wires.

But if you actually recall the popular vacuum robots from iRobot, Roomba, and how they actually can be contained in such a region … For example it might fall off the stairs, so there is an infrared system, infrared-based beacon.

So you can buy additional beacons that basically are installing virtual walls if you have to use the Roomba.

It’s like that, so a boundary wires system is like you are constructing an actual virtual fence. It’s actually somewhat similar to these invisible fences you have to use for your dog.

Bottom line, the current John Deere robotic mower, or any other robotic mower available in the marketplace, uses this kind of virtual invisible fence system where they have to install wires to declare or determine the boundary of your lawn.

What we are trying to do is what if we can actually get rid of that so that it can be more flexible? We are going to use our vision, this kind of computer vision, so we are going to mount these omnidirectional cameras.

We need a computer to process these visions … to accurately predict and estimate the location of the mower and establish some boundary that it can actually find.

The system we have to add to this mower includes omnidirectional cameras. Basically, this is a 360-degree field of view.

Typically, you have a certain field of view limitation; you can only see certain angles from your camera. This one can look at whole views surrounding the location.

DI: The robotic lawn mower and this technology that you are developing, does it have some sort of safety features? Can it sense if there are children around or dogs or if there are obstacles?

SJC: Yes, computers just have a wirebased system. The only thing you can do is maybe it can be contained in your lawn, right? But what if your children are running around and there are many paths?

So, we are using a vision-based system to detect the boundaries of your landmarks, like trees or doors and windows. This actually is composed of two-step processes.

First, the mower can follow the boundary of your lawn.

While it’s doing so, the computer visionbased autonomous navigation system of this robotic mower detects and finds and registers all those features found on the camera,

What happens is that next time you turn on the switch … The first step is called the training mode; you just train the actual boundary of your lawn.

The next time, it can automatically detect those features associated with particular points of your mower, which is like your boundary of your lawn, so that next time it can be always contained within that boundary.

One of those things is not just following the boundaries or locating the location of your mower within the boundary.

Furthermore, it can actually detect other features that can obstruct the movement or maybe affect the safety of this operation.

For example, as you said, it can be used to avoid a collision with other obstacles or humans or any moving object.

It’s more flexible.

It’s going to be safer than existing systems because this vision-based navigation system can not only provide the localization information of the mower … but also it’s going to provide much-needed safety features.

It’s like a combination of a GPS navigation in your car … but it’s also providing a collision-avoidance system like modern cars.

DI: How long has this project been

developed, and how did John Deere get involved?

SJC: Again, this is purely a technological development … Hopefully they will adapt our technology. Bottom line, they already have this product called the robotic mower introduced in Europe and other markets, but we are adding the system with a more advanced vision-based navigation system.

For that purpose, we were contacted by one of the engineers at John Deere because based on our background, … they said they could apply this same technology to the robotic mowers.

DI: When will this system be available on the market for the robotic lawn mowers?

SJC: I don’t know; hopefully soon, maybe in a few years. I shouldn’t know; I cannot speak on behalf of John Deere. This is really our research area, and we have a lot of technologies being developed from our group and other groups.

I believe this vision-based navigation system will really facilitate or speed up the adoption of this kind of robotic mower as mainstream household robots you can buy in addition to vacuum robots … in maybe five years, I hope.

It has reached that point in the summer: the time when everyone is just about ready to get back to school. By late July, the routine of going to work or trying to waste days is starting to get stale and the sting of finals has finally faded away. Luckily, the first day of classes is rapidly approaching, along with a change of sceenary.

Here we are in Illinois, complaining about the weather again. How original. It’s hard not to complain when walking down the street feels like you’re traveling though a tropical forest. Nothing about this humidity is appealing.

Everyone’s hair is a mess and just walking a block makes you so sticky it feels like you ran a mile. Let’s bring back that rain we had earlier this summer.

The collegiate glorification of busy Busyness is not a competition ALEX SWANSON Opinions columnist

A

sk a given college student, “How are you?” and far too often, we’ll respond, “I’m tired.” But what we really mean is that we are crazy busy, much too busy for sleep.

We have our phones on us at all times; we relish in registering for course overloads.

We must participate in any amount of extracurriculars. It’s even better if we can get the leadership spot. Plus, we’re applying for internships and/or graduate school.

After all that, there is intense social pres-

sure to go out, have fun, and prove it on social media.

We love to complain, although we’re actually bragging, that we have this many papers and that amount of projects coupled with some amount of tests all in the coming week.

Clearly, college students are participatory in the glorification of busy: the notion that busy is best.

But, the fact is that not only is it detrimental for us to participate in the phenomenon, but also competing to be the busiest is absurd and probably immeasurable.

First, everyone in college is busy. I name everyone knowing there are certainly exceptions, but that is the general rule as I’ve observed it.

All of us have difficult courses and assignments, friends who need us and extracurricular obligations.

So to engage in a passive-aggressive competition that decides who is busier is pointless. I don’t believe that any one major is definitely more demanding than another.

Second, for argument’s sake, let’s say that busyness is on a definitive scale and

viable competition, would anyone really want to win?

I’m unsure as to how being busy became equivalent with being the best, but they should not always necessarily and automatically be considered synonymous.

To be sure, there’s nothing wrong with a strong work ethic and dedication.

But busyness, the way I perceive it, is something else.

It’s the feeling that if you aren’t doing anything measurably productive, then you’re wasting your time. But, unproductivity is essential.

Our culture and society is overly time-driven.

We eat our breakfasts and lunches on our way to class or while we study, and we study for hours on end without breaks. We pack our schedules purposely so that we often leave our houses early in the morning and don’t return until quite late in the evening.

But one likely needs some degree of unproductivity everyday to thoroughly enjoy her work. A student needs breaks to ultimately be as productive as possible; small bursts of unproductivity bolster great quality work.

Though we like to complain about having so much to do that we’re exhausted, the more sleep you get, the more likely it is that you’ll earn better grades.

We need to stop measuring ourselves in terms of busyness.

Instead, we should measure ourselves in accomplishments or how good we feel a given day rather than how tired; it just makes more sense.

We also have to stop thinking of college as a transitional period that sets us up for the professional world, a period that is aimed toward earning a degree at the end of four years.

Rather, we need to enjoy the period for what it is. If that means dropping a course or pulling out of an activity, so be it.

College students need to give up being busy because it feels like the productive thing to do.

We need to shave down our schedules to everything that is essential to our personal and professional growth; everything else can and should go.

Biostamp monitors health through skin

A unique innovation from University research could change the way doctors perform and treat their patients. The Biostamp, created by John Rogers, professor in Engineering, and other scientists from various universities, allows doctors to monitor their patients’ health even when they’re out of the hospital.

Rogers’ creation is similar to a temporary tattoo in the sense that it’s placed on the outside of a patient’s skin and left in that position for a couple weeks. But it also does much more.

“The idea is to go from devices like Apple Watch and FitBit and Leapfrog into something that is really medically relevant,” Rogers said.

While the Biostamp rests on a person’s body, doctors can monitor blood pressure, blood oxygen, pulse rate, respiration rate

and much more. Rogers said these sensors are so skin-like that people barely notice they are wearing them.

The Biostamp can also connect to the user’s smartphone to show the data it records, making it convenient for everyday use. The user can just check his or her phone at any time to see what the sensor is recording.

Rogers said he and his team are most excited about its potential to produce advancements in hospitals and the treatment of patients. Because these sensors make it possible for doctors to monitor their patients’ health while they’re outside of their office, they can keep a log of what was happening at any certain time so a patient can go back and look at what’s happening if they have problems for a short time.

“It’s a set of technologies where we combine the hard materials that are needed to support the electronics and the sensor func-

tion, with really soft materials that define the overall mechanical characteristics of the integrated systems,” Rogers said.

Rogers and his team have been working with professionals in the medical field to get a better understanding of what they can do to help with their unmet needs. He said the collaboration between different people with different backgrounds in their respective fields has helped them understand how to best design and use the Biostamp.

“We think the only way to do that is to get away from the watch-band-type style of wearables into something that’s integrating intimately with the skin to provide much more clinically-relevant data streams,” Rogers said. “That is what the Biostamp is all about.”

Tony Banks, another scientist who has been working with Rogers, has interacted with many devices and sensors during the years of their partnership.

Banks wore some of the sensors on his fingernails to test their capabilities. He demonstrated how a simple tap of the fingernail on a smartphone sent data to his screen. He described it as near field communication, or NFC, which is a process that allows multiple technologies to communicate with each other using a radio communications system.

“Basically, your NFC in your phone is putting out a certain amount of power to be able to wirelessly power NFC devices, so this is the energy harvesting feature,” Banks said.

“We’re actually harvesting some of that energy that your cellphone is just putting out all of the time. You have this kind of mini power plant in your pocket that is wasting energy, so we’re taking that energy and using it for useful things.”

Business fair promotes opportunities for minorities IPHEC sponsors diversity business fair

Illinois Public Higher Education Cooperative (IPHEC) hosted the Higher Education Diverse Business Opportunity Fair at the I Hotel and Conference Center Tuesday, which aimed to support groups such as women, minorities and veterans in networking with business and university leaders.

IPHEC works with thirteen college campuses and nine public universities in the state of Illinois.

Tracy Sullivan, IPHEC member, said they hope to continue to host diverse business fairs throughout Illinois.

“We try to be in different regions regardless of where the vendors are so it’s convenient for them to attend,” Sullivan said.

“So today there was a focus more on construction, so you have a lot of architects and engineers and different construction kind of people here today.”

Dale Morrison, member of the Office of Procurement Diversity, said the fair also aimed to teach about the procurement process – to buy or obtain goods and services – and becoming certified as a vendor in the state of Illinois.

“One of the things that this type of fair does is introduce them to the process, how to bid, how to get those opportunities and to meet those key people that make those decisions,” Morrison said. “So now they

can start forming a partnership with these departments so they can later bid and actually become a contractor.”

Fair attendees, who were identified as “vendors,” had the chance to visit booths of various companies and explore business opportunities available at several universities in Illinois. Similar to a career fair, recruiters at the booths would learn about what the vendors do and what types of businesses they own. From there, the vendors would be matched up with a particular department compatible with the type of services they provide.

“We pretty much need all types of goods and services at the university in order to operate,” Morrison said. “That goes from construction firms to professional services firms. We need lawyers here, we need attorneys, we need accountants, we need financial people, so anything that you can almost think of that the university needs, those are the people who are invited to come and participate.”

Jill Menezes works in the purchasing department as a contract coordinator at the University of Illinois at Springfield.

She said after vendors have the face-to-face opportunities for networking with business owners, she advises them to continue that same communication after attending the fair.

“After they attend these events – it’s what I tell them a lot when they’re at the booth

– go through the U of I directories and contact some of the departments that they really think would utilize some of their services,” Menezes said. “And either try to set up a meeting with them, send them an email, but in some way contact them so they can be more aware of what they have to offer.”

Morrison said it’s important for vendors to leave the fair feeling a sense of a beginning to a developed relationship.

“These fairs give these small firms an

opportunity to meet face-to-face with the people they’ll be doing business with, and they can build trust with each other,” Morrison said. “(The vendors) get to know the University needs, and the University gets to know what their capabilities are. You need that kind of partnership in order to do business with one another, and that’s what these fairs do.”

Daily Illini reviews new summer films

Apatow and Schumer pair make ‘Trainwreck’ a memorable theater experience BEN LASH Staff writer

Since Judd Apatow’s breakout film The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005), the iconic, raunchy comedic writer and director has had a reputation of depicting middle-class Americans with somewhat relatable complications.

However, in his newest directorial hit, Trainwreck, audiences are treated to comedian Amy Schumer’s first work of screenwriting.

The plot of Trainwreck is centered around magazine writer Amy Townsend (Amy Schumer), whose father has told her from a young age that “monogamy isn’t realistic.”

Taking these words to heart, Amy engages in a promiscuous lifestyle in an attempt to free herself from the usual cycle of heartbreak and disappointment that is monogamy in her eyes.

While this lifestyle succeeds in distancing Amy from a seemingly complicated and unhappy world, a certain level of happiness and comfort seems to be missing from Amy’s life. However, once her magazine assigns her

a story about a sports doctor, Aaron Conners (Bill Hader), we see Amy begin to tackle a truly monogamous relationship for the first time in her life as they begin to fall for each other.

While one of the more central subjects of the film is Amy and Conners’ relationship, this film is much more than just an average romantic comedy. In Apatow’s earlier films, romance is often involved in the central plot of movies, such as Knocked Up (2007) or The 40-Year-Old Virgin. It is hardly the singular or even most painful conflict the character or characters have to deal with.

In Trainwreck, Amy and her sister, Kim (Brie Larson), face the difficult challenge of taking care of their elderly father (Colin Quinn), who suffers from multiple sclerosis.

Amy and Kim have conflicting feelings on how to help him.

Kim, who is working as hard as she can to secure a steady life with her boyfriend and stepson, constantly wants to distance herself from her father, seeming to resent him for his parenting earlier in life. Amy does her best to stand by her seemingly dysfunctional father and care for him with or without her sister’s support, but it is clearly a struggle.

It’s parts of the plot of Trainwreck that urge me to notify anyone reading this review that while the film is marked as a comedy, this is not Tropic Thunder. This is not Despicable Me. And do not say that for the vulgar language and sexual situations that frequent the film. This movie will go from witty pop culture references to deep, sometimes painful places that will likely resonate with some viewers. I wouldn’t be reaching by saying that you could expect to experience tears from both laughter and sadness.

All that aside, the film is put together very well, which can be expected from an experienced director like Apatow. The plot can meander at times, and there are silly situations that seem to be there more for the joke than the plot. But honestly, if that’s something that may bother you, you’re likely to be laughing too hard at the time to care.

The performances from all actors range from decent to impressive. Schumer’s both dry and comedic narration helps establish a believable and relatable woman early in the film. Even Hader, known for ridiculous but entertaining roles in other Apatow films, pulls on the reigns a bit to present a much more stable, strongly likable character. But

don’t worry, you’ll see the familiar Hader pop up from time to time.

You’ll also see an abundance of celebrity cameos throughout the film. Amy’s boyfriend early in the film is played by professional wrestler John Cena, and yes, each romancefilled scene with him is probably as awkward as you’d expect.

Lebron James plays a loveably-sensitive and friendly version of himself, who is best friends with sports doctor Aaron. Initially, the cameos can seem a bit assaulting in number, but each celebrity executes their cameo well enough to keep the immersion in the film going, while still causing you to giggle and point from time to time.

If you like the mixture of awkward and painful situations and ridiculous and raunchy comedy seen in films such as Bridesmaids (2011) and Spy (2015), but with an inclusion of heart and emotion, similar to films like 50/50 (2011), this is certainly the film for you.

I won’t call it a date movie.

It’s a go-with-a-bunch-of-your-friends-tolaugh-and-maybe-cry movie.

You might learn something along the way.

While the range of this formula has started to see strain in more recent years, elements of its success can still be experienced in the Peyton Reed-directed Ant-Man, which was released on July 17.

The plot follows Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), a skilled burglar recently released from prison after serving time for (you guessed it) burglary. Struggling to support himself with his ex-con status, Scott finds it difficult to resist the urge to continue his criminal career of burglary.

He eventually succumbs to the pressure, and reunites with his old friend and partner in crime, Luis (Michael Peña), to take part in one more job to get himself on his feet financially.

When the job results in him burgling a suit with the technology to shrink a man to the size of an ant, all while maintaining the same degree of strength one would have in their full size, Scott is contacted by the suit’s creator, Hank Pym (Michael Douglas). Hank then convinces Scott to help him steal the same technology from his former protégé, Darren Cross, who intends to use it for military purposes.

Recent Marvel movies have a reputation

of mixing spectacular action and drama with frequent wit and humor. When it was released that the lead actor of Ant-Man was to be Rudd, who is known for his work in comedies such as Knocked Up (2007) and I Love You, Man (2009), the public fully expected comedy and humor.

The film delivers satisfyingly, much thanks to the style of acting that Rudd is known for. It is clear that for many of the scenes, Rudd performs his lines with a level of improvisation, which has been used successfully in previous films, especially when working with frequent co-star, Jason Segel.

However, it is not Segel, nor any other wellknown actor, that Rudd is able to bounce wit and humor off of in Ant-Man. Instead, audiences can enjoy a somewhat comedic debut performance from Michael Peña.

Peña has been known in the past for more serious roles in films like End of Watch (2012) and Fury (2014). But a good deal of the laughs in Ant-Man that don’t come from Rudd are from Peña’s performance, including his long and drawn-out recounting of how he came to hear very small and compact bits of information.

Visually, the film stands out rather well. As expected, literal ants play a huge role. And

whether you’re seeing Scott ride a giant carpenter ant (lovingly named Antony) or seeing swarms of fire ants swarming across floors and walls, there are few scenes without them.

If bugs make you squeamish, be warned before walking into this movie. The film tries to make some of them seem more lovable, but there’s still nothing like seeing a gigantic swarm of well-animated ants crawling over someone on the big screen.

The fight scenes between the Ant-Man and the movie’s main antagonist are spectacular as well. It’s thrilling to see a minuscule Ant-Man jumping from small piece of debris as a slightly out-of-focused and full-sized villain takes up the background, firing lasers at the hero.

You shouldn’t watch this movie expecting a deep plot. The family drama between Scott and his daughter, as well as Hank and his daughter provides some depth to get you involved in the plot, but some of the roles aren’t executed as well as others.

But if you’re looking for witty dialogue with special effects similar to Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), this film is well-worth the ticket.

Rudd, Marvel cinematic team make ‘Ant-Man’ worth ticket price at theater BEN LASH Staff writer

There have been about a dozen movies taking place within the same Marvel Universe since Iron Man, directed by Jon Favreau, back in 2008.

With the overall story surrounding all the characters and the visual style of each film being essentially the same, it’s not overstepping bounds for people to consider all of these films as sequels, based on characters that have, for the most part, already been recreated in cinematic form from comic-book form in the past.

However, millions of fans are not taking to the streets or YouTube protesting this rapid production of Marvel films. The reason?

I believe that starting with Iron Man, directors like Jon Favreau have been able to figure out some kind of formula with movie production in both writing and visual style that has made these films not just acceptable, but very enjoyable.

Former employer endorses coach Bollant

Matt Bollant has had a rough summer.

The head coach of the Illinois women’s basketball team is currently facing a $10-million lawsuit. Other named defendants include athletic director Mike Thomas and former assistant head coach Mike Divilbiss.

The lawsuit comes from seven former players who claimed racial abuse from Bollant and his coaching staff.

Before the lawsuit, letters from parents of the former players were sent to the University which prompted the University and Divilbiss to part ways.

Later, an investigation from a law firm in Chicago was brought in after an internal investigation by the University was deemed inadequate.

Bollant was seen as a promising coach.

He turned both Bryan College and Green Bay into winners before coming to Illinois, where he was expected to do the same.

A nine-time coach of the year winner and a Kay Yow Heart of a Coach winner, an award given to a coach that is seen as possessing good character by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Bollant went from being seen as a respected coach into an alleged racist.

“I just find that really hard to believe – that’s not the Matt that I knew,” said Sanford Zensen, Bollant’s former boss. “We had no indication of any such thing – in fact, we had just the opposite with him.”

Zensen was the athletic director at Bryan College, a small Christian college in Dayton, Tennessee. Zensen held that position from 1990-2013 and hired Bollant to his first head

coaching job in 2002.

Bollant coached at Bryan from 2002-2007.

He went 134-36 at Bryan, winning three conference titles and made one NAIA Sweet 16.

“Absolutely phenomenal, he was top draw as far as I’m concerned,” Zensen said of Bollant. “Everyone who worked with him from his staff to his players were absolutely terrific.”

Another complaint against Bollant was that he and his staff had attempted to recruit more white players to outnumber black players. “(Bollant) looked for kids who fit Bryan College,” Zensen said. “We are a small Christian college; we are really particular about the kinds of kids that fit the institution.

That was most important, and they did.”

Other allegations were that practices and away hotel rooms were racially segregated.

“In terms of discrimination, or any such thing, that just didn’t happen at Bryan (under Bollant). I would find it hard to believe that (the claims) are accurate,“ Zensen said.

Several players who played for Bollant and/or Divilbiss from Green Bay and Idaho were asked for comment, but they either declined to comment or did not respond.

At the time of publishing, neither the University nor Bollant have commented on Zensen’s remarks.

The lawsuit and investigation are ongoing.

“If I was the AD for Bryan and he applied to come back, I would have him in a heartbeat.”

When Cubs President Theo Epstein left an hourlong meeting with Kyle Schwarber in February 2014 at the team complex in Mesa, Ariz., he sensed something special about the catcher.

Epstein knew Schwarber could hit but never imagined him being able to connect even more powerfully with people, eye to eye. There are no sabermetrics that measure character. This was the kind of guy the Cubs needed in their clubhouse.

Add Schwarber to the mix of young talent in Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Addison Russell, and Jorge Soler, and almost any baseball pundit would agree that you have a recipe for success.

“It’s very rare to have four rookies like that,” Hoyer said. “Sometimes the inexperience may show, but they compete like crazy. The makeup of these young guys is really good.”
