On behalf of all of us – the faculty, staff and returning students – thank you for choosing Illinois for your college experience. Every one of you had many great choices of many great schools. We’re excited that you picked this one. And I sincerely hope that in your time here you explore every corner of this campus and that you take advantage of every opportunity we offer – in and out of the classroom.

I know looking around today how hard it is to believe that this is a place that began with a single building and 77 students back in 1867.

Today, as we are nearing the 150 year anniversary of our founding, we are home to more than 44,000 students who come to us from more than 100 countries. This is literally and figuratively, a global crossroads of cultures, languages and ideas. From art to science and from faith to food, evert day here offers the chance of fi nding something you never expected.

That is really the tradition here at Illinois – making discoveries and advances that others never even considered or that were believed to be impossible. You don’t change the world by standing still. You don’t solve difficult problems without asking tough questions.

You are joining a university family that counts Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners, Oscar and Grammy recipients, Olympian and Paralympian champions. And just like you begin to do this fall, they added their voices and their stories to the Illinois legacy.

Tips to tackle UI libraries MAGGIE PLUSKOTA Copy chief

A

s an English major, I came to the University excited just for its library system, consisting of 31 libraries and 24 million items. It’s world-renowned and benefits from our Graduate School of Information and Library Science, the top school of library and information science in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report.

But I realize not everyone comes to college eager to surf the University library’s online catalog.

So, here’s a few pro-tips on how to take advantage of the largest public research

university library in the United States.

Go to the library without ever leaving your bed The first thing you should do is go to the University library website at library.illinois.edu.

Make a library account and use it In order to renew or request items from the library, you need to make an actual library account.

You may think you have an account automatically because your i-Card has

a library account number on it, but you don’t. It only serves as a proper library card once you make an account.

Click “My Account” on the library website’s upper righthand corner, and the rest is self-explanatory.

Your NetID and Active Directory password, which grant you access to your University email and University computers, allow you to use online academic journals like JSTOR without an account, but a library account will give you an all-access pass.

Once you’re in, you can request books, eBooks, movies, and CDs from any library in the University library system or even from a different university’s library.

You can choose to pick them up from any library,

but because I lived in University Housing for my first two years, I always chose to have my requested item sent to my residence hall library.

Allen Hall, Busey-Evans, FAR, the Ike, ISR, and LAR all have residence hall libraries, so be lazy.

If you set up text alerts, the library will also text you when your book arrives at your requested location — almost as cool as getting a text from your mom.

Chat with your friendly, neighborhood librarian If you need a book for an assignment or just have a really strong urge to reread “Harry Potter,” look up your book beforehand on the library website to make sure it’s available.

Go to the library website and stick the book’s title in the “Easy Search” box, click on its title to reach its info page, and then if it’s available, request to have its call number texted to you.

However, if looking for a book proves daunting, or you have any other library or research-related questions, use the “Ask a Librarian” chat box on the main page.

You can ask for help without the face-to-face shame of being a clueless freshman, and it’s a genuinely helpful, convenient tool.

encyclopedia, database and academic journal you’ll ever need.

Simply use the library’s website to choose which reference site you need from the light blue reference bar underneath the “Easy Search” box, and then have your NetID and Active Directory password at the ready.

I speak from experience when I say it’s easy to write an entire, well-researched paper just by hopping from reference site to reference site.

Long story short, don’t let this awesome library system go to waste, no matter your major. These tips are just the tip of the iceberg.

t a school with 40,000 students, everyone is bound to have a big lecture at some point in their college career. Whether you’re taking STAT 100 in Lincoln Hall or your major’s fi rst intro-level class, make sure it is as impactful as possible.

Sit near the front On my fi rst day of ECON 102 in Foellinger Auditorium, I arrived way too early and sat in the second level balcony. I thought it was a good spot,

start to notice you and appreciate your attentiveness. Brownie points, anyone?

Stay off the Internet somewhere I could sit every Tuesday and Thursday for the rest of the semester.

The second day of class I arrived late, per my usual style, and my favorite balcony was full. My only choice was to — somewhat timidly — walk to the front of the auditorium and sit in the second row.

I was a little peeved until I realized how much more I paid attention.

Sitting in the front also made the class of 1,000 students feel a little smaller and less intimidating.

Plus, the professor will

I used to take notes by hand and loved it, but eventually I realized it just makes more sense to type them on my laptop.

The convenience is excellent but the temptation to check Facebook or iMessage friends can compromise your attention to class.

Staying off the Internet in class and using your laptop strictly for notes will benefit you in the long run. If you’re really tempted, just completely disconnect your computer from the Internet until you’re out of class.

Keep your phone in your bag Similarly, don’t spend class on your phone. Aside from the huge distraction it is, being on your phone during class is rude. Even if you spend the whole fi fty minutes daydreaming, at least your professor can’t see how much you aren’t paying attention.

Introduce yourself to the professor This can be intimidating, but it’s worth it. It takes two seconds after class and your professor will appreciate it.

Then when you need help or want to contest a grade, they already know you and may be more inclined to help you.

Go to office hours Even if you don’t have a question. Make one up if you have to, but go in at least once every two weeks. In high school, my dad always urged me to spend time after school asking my teachers questions.

I thought by being a high school senior I already knew everything, but I defi nitely did not.

And I defi nitely did not understand why I would waste everyone’s time asking a question I could fi nd the answer to on the Internet.

When I got to college though, I realized my dad’s advice was less about having a question answered and more focused on building relationships with my teach-

ers. Chances are you actually will have a few questions throughout the semester, but you’ll also get to know your professors better, which can provide you with a world of opportunity.

Find your classes on Study Room This website is virtually Facebook for school.

You can ask and answer questions and post study guides and class notes.

You’ll be surprised how helpful your fellow classmates can be and it defi nitely comes in handy when you’re in a pinch.

aking up in the morning is indeed one of the most important parts of going to school.

I’m not really a morning person. If it were up to me, I’d probably never see the hour of 7:00 a.m.

But, unfortunately, you’re probably going to have a morning class or two in your week, and that’s just life. If you’re like me, you’re going to need to train yourself to get up and moving, so here are some tips to make sure you make it to those early classes.

1. Get a loud, horrible alarm clock, and put it far enough from your bed that you’ll have to get up. Or make your phone alarm play something awful, like Hannah Montana. That’s really no way to live, and you’re going to be forced to get up and turn it off.

2. Starting your homework before 9:00 p.m. the night before you are going to have to rise early is probably always a good idea. If you stop refreshing Facebook and get moving on your homework, you won’t have to stay up late.

3. Open your blinds at night so the sun shines through in the morning.

I know you’re not ready for day, and it’s going to hurt your feelings, but you have to face the facts. The sun is up.

4. Lay your clothes out the night before. I know it might feel like you’re nine years old, but it’s really not too much work, and honestly, it’s probably just sweatpants anyway. This way, you’ll have just one less thing to worry about in the morning.

5. Don’t go out to the bars when you know you have to get up early.

6. Try not to become nocturnal. Waking up at 2:00 p.m. and going to sleep at 4:00 a.m. is for the summertime. Now, you have things to do during the day. Catch yourself before you fall into that pattern.

7. Don’t take that 8 a.m. you thought you could take (if possible) if you have never really been an early riser. You’re not going to transform into a morning person overnight. That’s something you’re probably born with, but people like us can only speculate.

8. Try coordinating schedules to see when your roommate is getting up. If it’s before when you need to get up, let him or her know that they can be loud and awful and slam things because you need to get up around then, too.

Your roommate will probably be nice and just call your name a few times to make sure you’re awake, and if that happens, you should get him or her a Starbucks card or something because that’s pretty cute.

9. Don’t do that thing where you scroll through social media for an hour before going to sleep with your eyes barely open and your face smashed into a pillow. There is nothing for you on there right now.

10. Get a bike, so you can wake up in a frenzy, nine minutes before class and only get there a minute or two late.

ome freshmen, at the time of admission to the University of Illinois, will be asked to join the James Scholars program. The James Scholars program is an honors program for undergraduate students who have shown above average skills in their work during high school.

Each incoming freshman’s eligibility as a James Scholar is considered upon application; their ACT scores, GPA and position in the graduating class is reviewed before being asked to become a James Scholar. Students in the top 20 and 10 percent of their graduating class are often the top candidates.

Each individual college in the University has its own specific requirements for a James Scholar student in the college. For the most part, each college will have a minimum GPA requirement, which must be maintained or the student will face rescindment from the honors program. Students may also have to take more than the minimum full-time status credit hours. For example, in the College of Media, students have to fulfill at least 14 credit hours for each semester.

Along with minimum credit hour and GPA requirements, students will also have to complete an honors activity. These activities come in various forms, and each college will require one or more of these activities. Students can complete an Honors Learning Credit Agreement, HCLA, where the students collaborate with their professor in a specific course they are taking, and agree to complete an honors assignment for that course

for an honors credit, an H on their transcript.

Other ways to complete the honors activity include taking a Campus Honors Program, CHP, course, which are specific honors courses; students can also complete honors seminars, participate in the undergraduate research seminar or complete an activity in a course that goes beyond the expectations of the course.

To make sure the terms are clear, it’s best to stay in open communication with professors in the course you wish to complete the honors activity.

At first it may seem like the requirements are overwhelming, but advisers and professors are always ready to help, and making sure not to procrastinate is key to fulfilling the requirements. Being a James Scholar can really open doors for students to different opportunities throughout the school year.

For example, this past year, James Scholars students in Media were offered the chance to spend spring break in Belgium.

These kinds of opportunities rise up for all students, along with the chance to participate in seminars, internships and other activities.

It’s also a great way to meet new people and form connections with professors in each respective college.

If students were not eligible to be a James Scholar their freshman year, they may apply their second semester to be considered for the following school year.

bviously, the point of going to college is to get a degree.

But there are many crucial life lessons you learn along the way that will follow you everywhere you go in life.

One of those life lessons is how to procrastinate like a champion. You might think you’re good at this skill now, but you’re wrong.

Procrastination is a new beast in college, so best learn the ropes now with Procrastination 101.

1. Watch a new series on Netflix When I was in high school, I remember telling my dad he could cancel

the Netfl ix subscription because I didn’t like it. I was a fool back then.

I won’t tell you how many series I fi nished freshman year but let’s just say if you make a reference to a non-black-andwhite television show, I will be able to pick it up.

Start with basics like “How I Met Your Mother” or “Parks and Rec.” Your job is to get through the seasons, not to fi nish that paper.How likely are you to do work after?

Netfl ix is a pit of oblivion. Hitting “Play next episode” is just so easy. It’s highly unlikely you’ll do anything productive ever again.

2. Do other homework

You know you have too much work when you procrastinate big projects with little ones.

Who cares about the exam worth half your grade tomorrow?

You have a two-page paper due in a month that is clearly more deserving of your attention. Yes, this is paradoxical and counter-intuitive, but you’ll do it anyway.

How likely are you to do work after?

Hopefully after doing one assignment you’ll be on a roll and ready to jump to the next one after a short break.

3. Join a club you care about When you join a club with a cause you’re passionate about, you’ll be motivated to do the work - especially since it was your own initiative that pushed you to that club in the fi rst place.

Easily, any work or meeting for the organization will push your other assignments to the wayside - and it’s a great way

to convince yourself that you really were too busy to start studying until the night before a big test.

How likely are you to do work after?

Since this assignment has nothing to do with actual classes, you won’t have the same energy as the option before.

You might tackle a short assignment, but the odds are not largely in your favor.

lthough it can seem difficult to meet a new professor and create a relationship, it can be done and is beneficial.

Professors have gone through college and experienced the working world, so it is to the advantage of students to create a relationship with them.

Professors know the

stresses students face as they go through college, along with other problems that might come up in the field of study as students go out into the world.

By being respectful and taking an interest in the class, students can learn a lot about a professor and create a relationship.

The best way to make a relationship with a teach-

er is by being respectful inside and outside the classroom.

Being respectful is more than just treating the professor as you would like to be treated, though.

College is a professional zone, so students should remember to come to class on time, not disrupt anyone by talking or being on the phone and always turn in assignments on time.

By showing the professor you care about the class, there is more of a chance the professor will understand and care if problems arise (such as needing extensions on assignments).

Many of the professors I have encountered enjoy their jobs and fields of

study, which is why if students have questions, they should ask their professors to explain.

Write down the professor’s contact information, office hours and location to fi nd out the best time to ask questions.

There are many outlets for assistance on campus, but asking the professor who assigned the homework might be the best, and they will see you care enough to take time out of your day to fi nd an answer.

Creating a relationship with a professor can lead to advantages that extend beyond the course in which you are enrolled.

It’s possible a professor could assist students with any questions they have about issues other than homework, such as problems the professor faced after college or where to fi nd the best jobs.

Professors with whom students create relationships might also be willing to write recommendation letters for graduate school, scholarships or jobs, which will benefit students as they leave the University.

I

’m just going to start this article with a disclaimer: I am guilty of doing all of the following things in class. But it is a new school year and I am hoping to start fresh and get the most out of lectures.

As a junior in college, however, I know it may be hard to teach an old dog new tricks, but I am going to try my best. If you are an underclassman, this advice could be especially helpful in helping you form successful classroom habits!

1. Stay off your phone This is by far the most important tip I could give you. It is great being away from strict high school teachers that don’t allow you to use your phone in class, but I’ve now learned they had good intentions.

What often starts as just checking the time or using your phone’s calculator during a lecture

often turns into a 30-minute Instagram-stalking session or creating an elaborate Snapchat story masterpiece.

Next thing you know, class is over and you forgot to take notes. This year, I am going to put my phone on airplane mode in class, so I can still use helpful features like the time, calendar, calculator, etc. without getting distracted.

2. Same goes for your laptop

I love taking notes on my laptop. I am much faster at typing on my computer than writing in a notebook.

Plus, there are great organizational and notetaking tools available on laptops.

But just like cellphones, computers can be extremely distracting. I will often fi nd myself checking emails, doing homework for other classes or Pinteresting away.

Students sit in a class in Lincoln Hall Theater. It is important to stay free of distractions when in large lecture classes.

To fix this, don’t turn on the WiFi. You will still be able to take efficient notes, without the temptations that the Internet brings.

3. Don’t sit in the back It can be intimidating to sit in the front of classrooms or huge lecture halls, especially when you are a freshman.

I remember being so nervous that a teacher would ask me a question I was not prepared for.

However, sitting in the back contributes to distracting behaviors like

playing on your phone or laptop since you are further away from the teacher.

I’ve also noticed that people have more conversations in the back, leading to my own eavesdropping.

You don’t have to be a teacher’s pet and sit in the very first row, but aim to sit closer to the front if you want to get the most out of your classes. And assuming I take my own advice, you will fi nd me there as well!

4. Be careful with whom

you sit Everyone loves to sit with friends in class. I often plan my schedule with my friends so we can walk and sit together in lectures.

But be cautious because friends can be just as distracting as your technology and geography in the classroom.

I know my friends and I are always tempted to talk about what we did the night before, what we are having for lunch that day and really anything not related to class.

This will probably be the hardest habit for me to break.

If you fi nd yourself in this situation, tell your friends to wait to have other conversations after class, or take the advice from number three and sit toward the front together.

You will be less inclined to talk to each other when you are closer to the teacher.

aking your class schedule in college is a matter of figuring out what works best with your lifestyle and preferences. It’s about fi nding the perfect balance for you.

I remember sitting with my counselor at my freshman orientation as we made my schedule.

I didn’t have a good feel for what an ideal college schedule should look like.

I relied heavily on my counselor’s guidance, and luckily she was extremely helpful in guiding me through the process.

At the time, I thought it’d be great to have a three-hour gap between two of my classes. I thought this would give me enough time to go

home and eat or relax before heading to my next class.

As the semester went on, I ended up just wanting to get my classes over with each day, and my three-hour break seemed to drag on.

I didn’t actually end up going home except for a few times, and instead spent my break doing homework at the Union.

Having such a long break could be great; some people like having some time off from class, or like using the time to be productive and get some work done. But I learned that I prefer to just get my classes out of the way and do my work later.

When you make your schedule, also keep in

mind things like breaks to get food.

I always preferred to just bring a snack with me and stay on the go, but maybe you prefer to have enough time to stop

Additionally, decide whether you are an early riser or not.

Sometimes you just have to register for a class at 8 a.m., but other times there are more options. If you know you’re never going to be able to make it to an early morning class, look at your options.

Something else to look out for when you make your schedule is class location.

Consult a campus map to make sure you can get from one building to another in the time allotted.

Trust me, it’s not fun to run from the west end of the Armory to Noyes Laboratory in 10 minutes, as I quickly learned my freshman year.

Sometimes, you might not have the option of doing anything about this because your class might only be offered during one time slot, but usually you can fi nd a way to switch up your schedule to ensure you don’t end up running from one quad to another.

Trial and error is essentially the only way to figure out what works best for you.

There is no one-sizefits-all scheduling model to follow.

In time, you’ll figure out a system that works best for your own lifestyle. It took me that fi rst

fall semester to figure out what I wanted to change or keep the same when registering for the spring semester.

What are some of the best classes to fulfill degree requirements?

For Social and Behavioral Sciences, take SOC 100 – I took this class my freshman year, and it was a great class. It was easy, interesting and informative all at once. A great way to get required credits while learning some useful information.

For Quantitative Reasoning, take STAT 100 – The information was presented in an easilydigestible format.

For Natural Sciences and Technology, take ATMS

120 – I’ll be honest: I never took this class.From what I’ve heard, it’s one of the easiest and most fun courses offered at the University.

For Advanced Composition, take JOUR 200 – As a journalism major, I’m clearly a little biased toward this course.

It really is a great opportunity to explore the field . And who knows, you might decide it’s something you’re really interested in — this class

hether you love it or hate it, Greek life is undeniably a formidable institution on campus.

The community is somehow both visible and mysterious, and seems to have its own language that doesn’t even involve Greek letters. Study these terms to speak this new dialect of Greek when stepping onto campus.

Rush The term used to refer to the fraternity recruitment process. It is generally informal but is monitored by the Inter-

Fraternity Council, which is the governing council for fraternities. Fraternities host events, usually at their houses, where they get to know potential members.

Recruitment The term for sorority rush. A far more organized process, sorority hopefuls sign up and travel to every house at least once.

After two long weekends, placements are made.

This is the reason why you see girls zig-zagging across campus in heels,

running at full speed. Do not be alarmed.

Bid An invitation to join a Greek organization. For fraternities, they are generally given out individually. Sorority bids are given on the Greek Life holiday ‘bid day.’

One afternoon, all the people going through sorority recruitment gather in Foellinger Auditorium, get their bid card and run to their respective houses. It is a spectacle only comparable to the running of the bulls.

Big/Little A tradition in greek life pairing an older member and younger member.

Although more prominent in sorority life, it exists in fraternities as well.

The pairs are made to

help guide younger members through membership and ensure four years of sappy Instagram pictures.

Pledge fam (ily) Similar to big and little but crosses fraternity/ sorority lines.

A pledge marriage between a fraternity brother and sorority sister is usually of two good friends rather than romantic interests.

The marriage is usually propositioned with a ring pop or similar offering.

The respective littles of the betrothed are adopted into the blended family by their new mother or father.

Block

football.

A fraternity and sorority pair up to get neat shirts and reserve a space at a campus bar during home games.

The pairing comes after months of serenades and gifting by fraternities and deal brokering by social chairs.

Chapter This is the fancy name for the meetings Greek organizations hold on a weekly basis.

They differ by organization in length and formality, but usually involve discussing issues, plans, and other assorted business.

According to the Study Abroad Office, shorter programs are held over winter and summer break and are led by faculty. These programs are usually only one course but are much more intense than courses that span over the entire semester.

This is an effort to fit all the information taught into the short period of time available.

One example is Anthropology 445: Primate Behavior, Ecology, Ecosystem Sustainability and Conservation in Costa Rica.

This particular course is held over winter break and spans a total of four weeks.

Within this time, students collect field data, trek through tropical rainforests, and learn about Costa Rican culture and life in general.

Of course, there are drawbacks, such as cost, that dissuade students from pursuing the study abroad experience. But in reality, many of the programs cost less than a semester at the University of Illinois.

Prices often fluctuate depending on location.

And even those that do cost more have both financial aid and scholarship opportunities. Scholarships are made available not only through the Study Abroad Office but also through

ur university offers over 4 0 0 study abroad programs at various places around the world, including France, Italy, Austria, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Spain, and many others. Students can spend anywhere from two weeks to a whole year at these locations, and at the same time, earn course credit.

The diverse programs allow students in all majors to benefit from studying abroad. In addition to the

immense number of programs available, the Study Abroad Office created Centers for Global Learning and Engagement and started working on creating two more centers: one in Taipei, Taiwan, and the other in Stockholm, Sweden. The existing centers allow students to study abroad for more than six weeks and take more than one class at a time.

Over 27 percent of U of I students take the opportunity to study abroad in

various places around the world. These students learn that studying abroad will not only allow a change of scenery, but a chance to be immersed in a new environment and culture.

They also discover that studying abroad will not postpone their graduation. By working together with professors and the study abroad office, they can ensure that they get credit for the classes they take abroad and manage to graduate on time.

Many college students have been bitten by the travel bug. There are so many chances to explore the world out there, even if the trip is only a two-week

national study abroad organizations.

And finally, after the student’s study abroad experience, the study abroad office encourages students to stay connected to the international community.

Some join the International Illini, an on-campus, student-run Registered Student Organization. There is also the possibility to study abroad again or, if class schedules do not allow it, many more opportunities to work and volunteer abroad.

or some students, college might be the fi rst time you are out on your own.

There’s no dad to text you, asking if you’ll make curfew or someone readily available to hitch a ride from.

I once walked home at 3:30 a.m. because the buses stopped running, and it’s not something I’d suggest experiencing.

While the buddy system is really important for being out late roaming around, other services provided by the University can help make the night even safer.

Crime Alerts The University of Illinois Police Department is out monitoring campus

everyday. When something arises, you’ll want to be notified through crime alerts, or notifi cations of activity on campus.

Students and parents can register at the University’s Department of Public Safety website for crime alerts to be sent via email and text.

There are two categories for the alerts: public safety advisory, which warns the community, and a crime alert, which reports recent activity.

The alerts will notify when the crime happened, where, who was involved, and sometimes give a tipline if the crime has gone unsolved.

These alerts can help you be more aware of pos-

To counter this, the University offers a service where students can call and be escorted home instead of walking alone.

The Student Patrol staff is trained by the University of Illinois Police Department.

The service is offered from 9 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.

Sunday through Wednesday, and until 3 a.m. on Friday through Saturday. SafeWalks can be contacted by downloading its new app or calling 217-333-1216.

SafeRides If you don’t feel like walking, you can hitch a ride through SafeRides.

The service is provided through the Champaign Urbana Mass Transit District and works similarly to a taxi service, with

some conditions.

Only three people can be picked up at once, except for at the Illini Union, Illinois Resident Hall, and the Main Library.

It only gives rides home, so don’t plan on hitching a ride to the bars or to a hospital.

If a CUMTD bus can take you to your location, you shouldn’t use SafeRides.

It’s only for locations off the typical charted path.

Expect to wait 15 minutes during the week and 30 minutes during the weekend for the ride to come.

The service runs from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and can be reached at 217-2657433. Don’t forget to show your student ID!

Main Quad in August may seem like you’re walking through the Sahara Desert, so knowing the bus system will spare you from the heat. The FAR/ PAR stop is the fi rst stop for the 13 Silver and 12 Teal routes, so you won’t have as big of a fight to secure a spot on the airconditioned buses.

The Silver and Teal routes will be your lifeline to the rest of campus.

will get you almost anywhere on campus, which can be helpful, but the route’s numerous stops make the trip long.

If you live at Allen Hall …

You’re closer to the Main Quad than those at FAR/PAR, but your walk to places like Green Street is still a hike. Learn the bus system. Your stop is the second stop after FAR/PAR on the Teal and Silver lines, so allow extra time on extremely hot

days when the bus will be crowded. The Illini route does not stop in front of Allen Hall, but you can catch it about a block away in front of Bevier Hall.

If you live at LAR …

You have multiple options for bus routes with the LAR bus stop in front of the residence halls and the Gregory and Dorner bus stop behind them. You have access to the Red route, but you must present your i-card to use this route, and it runs less frequently than the others.

Take the Red when ... you’re going to the Krannert Center, the Illini Union, Green Street and the Bardeen Quad.

If you live at BuseyEvans …

Your walk to the Main Quad is short and sweet, but the Teal will help you get to Green Street quickly.

The Illini will also come in handy when you want to venture to places like the Activities and Recreation Center. Catch both routes from the Goodwin and Nevada stop.

If you live at ISR …

The Main Quad, Illini Union and Green Street are relatively short walks.

Places like the Undergraduate Library and Activities and Recreation Center (ARC) are farther from you, but the Illini route will help you get there.

Catch the bus at the ISR stop located in front of the residence halls.

If you live at the Ikenberry North and South Halls …

The walk to the Main Quad is not unbearable, but on hot summer days, an air-conditioned bus might be a better option.

The 100 Yellow route and Illini route will get you around campus, but taking the Yellow route and walking a little farther will pay off.

Take the Yellow when ... you’re going to the Main Quad, the Illini Union Bookstore, Green Street, the Illini Union or the Bardeen Quad.

Take the Illini when ... you’re going to the Undergraduate Library, Krannert Center, Davenport Hall, Noyes Laboratory, Illinois Street Residence Halls, Lincoln Avenue Residence Halls, Allen Hall or FAR/PAR.

etting adjusted to the college lifestyle can be tough. However, managing new curriculum, new responsibilities and a new environment doesn’t have to be a completely independent process.

The University offers free services to help you get acclimated to everything campus-related your freshman year and beyond. Here are a few services that can offer you help when a trip to your academic adviser just doesn’t cut it.

The Writer’s Workshop The Writer’s Workshop is the perfect service for all your research paper and essay needs. By signing up for one of the workshop’s 50-minute sessions, you can visit an experienced writer or teacher of writing and receive guidance for assignments, whether you need help with editing or simply brainstorming ideas.

The workshops are held in five locations across campus at convenient spots

for freshmen, such as the Ikenberry Commons and Undergraduate Library.

Appointments can be made by phone or just by stopping by the facility during open hours.

The Counseling Center No student is expected to adapt to living on campus with absolute ease. Therefore, if you feel that times are getting rough or even if you’re just feeling slightly overwhelmed, the Counseling Center is a great resource.

By calling the center, you can make an appointment to talk with a trained professional about emotional or academic stress you may be feeling. These sessions are already paid for through your health services fee.

Make sure to call in early in the morning (they open at 7:50 a.m.) for a session.

You can only make sameday appointments, and they fill up quickly.

Furthermore, the Counseling Center holds free weekly workshops on fre-

quently-asked-about topics such as time management, anxiety relief and self-care.

The Career Center If attending the University is the path to a career, the Career Center is a perfect stepping-stone. This facility provides excellent services to give you the professional skills necessary to enter the working world.

At no cost, you can set up an appointment with a career counselor who can answer any of your questions related to major and career paths, job searches, internships and resume writing.

One of the most helpful services is their mock interview sessions where you can sign up for an appointment to practice your job interview skills in person or over the phone. If you just need someone to glance at your resume, they also have drop-in advising at convenient hours throughout the day.

University of Illinois Extension Money Mentors Starting college often inherently means a new world of financial responsibility. The Money Mentor program is a lesser known

free service that allows you to sign up to work with a trained volunteer to get advice on budgeting, managing savings, setting financial goals and building credit. If you’re facing financial trouble, a money mentor can offer steps to help get you back on track.

No matter what your financial situation, signing up for one of their one-on-one sessions is a great way to stay on top of your money while on campus.

ARC and CRCE Health is rarely the first priority for incoming freshmen (insert Freshman Fifteen joke here), but it remains an important one.

The ARC and CRCE are completely free to use with your i-card and will keep you moving about and healthy. Use of the equipment, gymnasiums and swimming pools are free.

While you have to buy a pass for group fitness, the first week of each semester is free for students to try out classes such as Zumba, yoga, and cycling, among others.

How to Score Free Food: The ramen rumors are true: On a college budget, it can be hard to scrounge up decent grub some days.

Luckily, there are almost always events that offer free food on campus. Here are a few: Illinites: Once a month, the Illini Union Board hosts a free night of games, entertainment and, best of all, food. In the past they’ve served foods ranging from hot dogs to fondue. They’ve also been known to give out discounts to the Sbarro pizza in the Union basement. Get to the Illini Union early because the food goes fast.

“Lunch on Us” Series: Every day of the week, the Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Relations hosts a lunch and lecture at one of the different cultural centers – the African American Cultural Center, Asian American Cultural Center, La Casa Cultural Latina, the Native American House, the Women’s Resources Center, Diversity and Social Justice Education and the LGBT Resource Center.

They offer a free lunch that could range from pizza to pasta to Mediterranean cuisine. The food is great, and you can also learn something new while you chow down. Check the Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Relations website for schedules.

Resident Hall Activities: Resident advisers are forever hosting cool programs that are geared toward students, and they almost always use great food to reel you in. Catering from Jimmy John’s or even Chipotle is not uncommon. Don’t let those great meal opportunities slip by!

or any student entering the University, the sheer size of campus and amount of people in attendance can be overwhelming.While it might take some time, it’s not difficult to make this school of 40,000 feel like home.

I was fortunate to be in one of the smaller colleges on campus, which meant I acclimated to my surroundings faster, often seeing the same faces in my classes.

However, others may not have the same advantage.

Those in larger colleges like Engineering or LAS shouldn’t worry, though — so much can be done to

avoid feeling like just another face in the crowd.

Even though a new school means a fresh start, it’s also an opportunity to explore interests. Instead of trying to fit into the crowd, students often find better success when they keep sight of their own passions and experiences. It’s easy to pursue these interests given that there are more than 1,100 registered student organizations on campus.

Students can join groups dedicated to raising social awareness of human rights issues like Amnesty International, or can find others with similar interests, like

in the League of Legends Club, which brings together people who are interested in the online game. how many rso’s are there on campus?

Wherever a student’s interests may be, there’s sure to be a place that welcomes them without making them feel they have to compromise their identity.

From activities with the Archery Club or the Yoga, Meditation, and Dharma Club to volunteer opportunities with groups like The Kranert Center Student Association, the possibilities to explore interests are endless.

In my case, being a part of The Daily Illini not only pushed me to explore the campus further and meet new people, but it also allowed me to feel like I was making a significant contri-

bution by creating something that I was passionate about. The fact that I was able to find a place where I felt comfortable without having to blend into the background was a step in the right direction to calling this campus home.

Another benefit of taking part in extracurricular activities is having the ability to meet and facilitate meaningful relationships with others, which allows students to embrace the diversity of backgrounds and cultures that come with attending ait might help to specifically name a few other RSOs throughout the column just to give freshman an idea of them large university. This can help create an atmosphere of acceptance and openness, which allows students to feel more

at ease.

Additionally, it helps to find someone who is experienced on campus to help show you around. Older students can provide guidance on everything from class selection to where the best places to eat on campus are.

Another way that students can make a large campus feel smaller is to familiarize themselves with the campus and surrounding area. Exploring the surroundings can be somewhat daunting at first, but students will eventually find one of the many university buildings that house a spot to grab a coffee or a place to hang out between classes.

Once you find a go-to spot for studying or meeting someone for coffee, it can make the campus feel a little less intimidating.

Although the thought of disappearing into a crowd may be comforting, for some students, adjusting to the vastness of the University is a challenge. The fact remains that it is possible to make a large campus feel like home if given time and the chance to develop relationships.However, if these methods fail to work, and students are still experiencing anxiety or feeling hopeless, it’s important to note there are places where help is available. The Mental Health Clinic at McKinley Health Center, as well as the Counseling Center, both offer short-term counseling for students.

etting sick at school can be a pain. Sadly, gone are the days of mom taking you to the doctor and tending to your needs.

So, use the McKinley Health Center to your benefit to get proper health care on campus.

Here’s some basic information to know in order to make your McKinley experience struggle-free.

McKinley offers a helpful, welcoming environment to students requiring care.

Better yet, the center is included in your student fees, so it’s essentially free for students to use.

Learn how to take advantage of it.

Feeling under the weather? McKinley has general medical clinics with professional practitioners willing to assist sick students. Appointments can be made by phone during their office hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Numerous doctors are ready to diagnose you as accurately as possible.

They can also provide you with a doctor’s note if you need to miss class or work due to an illness.

McKinley has a pharmacy that will serve your medication needs.

With a prescription from a doctor, your order can be fi lled and refi lled promptly.

Keep in mind that medications do come with a

fee that can be paid with cash or credit or can be charged to your student account.

The center also offers free over-the-counter self-care supplies for students who are looking for handy products.

Each student is eligible to pick up a cold pack and wound kit twice per semester.

It also provides students with various contraceptive items, including birth control pill options and condoms.

McKinley’s Laboratory provides students with quality results to tests for a quick diagnosis.

From throat cultures to blood tests to sexually transmitted disease assessments, the lab is fully equipped to help you.If you plan on going abroad, McKinley’s Immunization and Travel Clinic offers vaccinations, allergy shots and

screening to prevent illnesses and prepare you for traveling overseas.

The nurse can suggest basic self-care, recommend an appointment or encourage emergency action.

“McKinley offers a helpful, welcoming environment to students requiring care. Better yet, the center is included in your student fees, so it’s essentially free for students to use.” tests that are developed and interpreted in-house.

Students can also use a telephone service called Dial-A-Nurse to consult a nurse 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The nurse answers general questions about illnesses and injuries and gives students advice on how to move forward.

Internet savvy?

MyMcKinley is an online service where students can log in with their NetIDs and access their healthcare accounts.

From making appointments and requesting prescriptions to viewing test results and retrieving medical forms, MyMcKinley is a secure,

accessible way to fi nd out information online.

McKinley is located at 1109 S. Lincoln Ave. in Urbana, which is walking distance for some students, but may be a longer hike for others.

Luckily, the 22-South bus has a stop location just outside the building, and there is a parking lot with meters for students with cars.

These are only some of the options McKinley offers to students.

Beat first semester stress

I

’ve always been a bit of a worrier. Whether it’s school, jobs or relationships, my mind always seems to drift from the present to the future — and throughout my first year of college, when I was far from my support groups and systems, stress seemed to take a much larger toll.

Though my first year of college was tough, I also learned a valuable lesson: You can’t do good work when you’re stressed.

You have to take breaks — you have to be happy and healthy yourself if

you’re going to learn and prosper.

Here are some of my favorite stress-relieving activities. They’re the reason why I survived.

Physical exercise I tried everything from distance running to Zumba when I couldn’t stare at my Microsoft Word document or Atmospheric Sciences textbook anymore.

The simple process of turning up my music, shutting everything else out, and focusing on the pavement or dance floor

in front of me helped me immensely. You’ve heard it before, and it’s true: When you’re physically active, endorphins are released, and they help you think more positively and happily.

Maybe you need some time to yourself — a run outside while you watch the sun go down is perfect.

Maybe you need to be active socially and physically — a class at the ARC is perfect. I met so many people through a one-hour, one-day-a-week course, and getting to know their lives, as well as learning some new dance moves, was a great distraction.

Do your favorite activity I’ve always been a passionate musician. I love playing music — I turn into a different person when I’m pressing on my piano keys or plucking a note on my bass guitar.

I would reserve a practice room for 20 minutes and learn a new song when I was feeling stressed.

And I was never happier.

Even if you’re not a

want to procrastinate.

But sometimes, I think we underestimate the mental health and clarity a simple TV show or movie can give us.

When you can find balance, don’t be afraid to hit play.

Just putting yourself out there and being around other people, who have different lives and responsibilities that can make yours seem small, helped me tremendously. It also helps with making new friends, too!

Overall, what helped me the most was to face the facts. Don’t let people fool you.

College isn’t supposed to

My first year of college, I read six books.

They weren’t good ones, but they distracted me, and that got the job done.

From the “Divergent” series, to the “Hunger Games,” I forced myself to read something actionpacked, so I was always mentally occupied.

In college, however, it can be hard to actually enjoy reading.

Maybe escapism for you is watching a movie or an episode of a TV show. I started “Grey’s Anatomy” my first year; I watched “Orange is the New Black.”

I watched so many John Hughes movies it was ridiculous. Don’t get me wrong; I needed to know when to close out. I didn’t

be all fun and games. It’s a rough, stressful time, when you’re more likely to cry and eat too much ice cream than any other time in your life.

I thought something was wrong with me when I was stressed. I was told by so many people that college was amazing — the best time of your life.

When I felt worse than the dirt on the ground, I thought I wasn’t doing this “college thing” right.

Don’t worry. Nothing’s wrong with you.

But, at the same time, college isn’t supposed to be the worst years of your life either.

Figure yourself out.

Find what makes you happy, even though that’s easier said than done.

If not these stressrelieving activities, pursue some of your own.

Make time for yourself. Your health is just as important as your grades.

Pros and cons of study spaces Consider environment of campus study spots STEFFIE DRUCKER Web editor

I

n your Intro to Psychology course, you may find yourself writing a response paper on whether people’s personalities, behavior, intelligence, etc. are determined by their genetics or the environment in which they live. A great way to determine which side of the argument you stand with is by trying to write your paper in various study spots.

Teeming with more than 43,000 students, there’s bound to be an array of different learning styles and study habits on campus. Fortunately, the University has hundreds of study spaces to accommodate us all.

Being new to the campus and, of course, new to college, you might feel overwhelmed when trying to find the perfect study spot for you. I think the best way is simply to experiment, trying different environments and keeping track of how each one affects your productivity.

Every study environment has different factors that contribute to your ability to get things done, including: Equipment /resources.

Working with a group? You might like to have a whiteboard, projector, or large TV to plug your laptop into. Low battery? Make sure there’s an abundance of outlets around you.

Noise level.

This is a big one. Some people prefer the low din of keyboards clicking away and people chatting around them. Others, however, can focus better in a more silent environment.

Food and beverage.

If you’re a snacker or need to stay hydrated while you work, that could eliminate various settings for you. Most study spots allow drinks as long as they’re covered, but some may be displeased if you bring along stinky, sticky, or loud snacks.

Hours.

Not all locations are open for all-nighters.

So, where to begin? Illini Spaces. This web app, created by Technology Services and the University Library in September, allows users to find available study spaces based on these criteria and more — especially helpful during Finals Week when the task of claiming a study spot becomes a bit more competitive.

Illini Spaces will tell you what resources are available and may even have a picture to give you an idea of what the space looks like, but that’s not the same as getting a description from someone who’s experienced it firsthand. Below, I’ve listed the pros and cons of my three favorite major study spots.

Ikenberry Commons (“The Ike”) Pros: I lived in the Six Pack freshman year and practically lived in the Ike. You have to eat in the Ike anyway, so it’s convenient to bring homework along and get some work done, too. Plus, the facility is utilized mainly by those living in the surrounding residence halls, so you’ll almost always find one of your friends to sit with.

THERE’S NO REASON TO BE UNCOMFORTABLE

Like most of the places listed here, you can choose to work in a quiet environment (in the Ike libraries) or with some background noise (near the Caffeinator). There are outlets everywhere, too, since it’s such a new building, and some rooms have large whiteboards that are great for group work.

The Ike is open 24 hours, which is convenient if you live close because you don’t have to worry about walking home late. I-57 and Caffeinator are there to keep you nourished, so feel free to set up and keep working all night long.

Cons: Being so close to where so many freshmen live means you’ll probably run into lots of people you know and get distracted.

This also means that the Ike can be pretty crowded at peak times, but you should always be able to find somewhere to work and it empties out after a certain hour.

Having the Caffeinator and 57 right there can also drain your time and focus, and leave the Ike a bit messy when people don’t clean up after themselves.

The Undergraduate Library (UGL) Pros: This library is underground, which is pretty cool.

The negative first floor (down one set of stairs) is for group study and those who like a little background noise.

This floor is also home to the Media Commons, a great resource for working on multimedia projects, and group study rooms you can reserve that are equipped with whiteboards and TV screens.

An Espresso Royale is located just outside the study area, as well as a tunnel with vending machines that sell snacks and supplies (i.e. highlighters and notecards), and connects the UGL to the Main Library.

This tunnel is especially useful in the winter and late at night, since it’ll get you from inside the UGL to the bus stop just outside the Main Library without having to go outside.

Hours, food policy and noise level should all be considered when finding a place to study.

The tables on either floor are spacious, allowing you to spread out with your laptop, textbooks and more. The UGL also has loanable calculators and chargers in case you forgot yours at home.

Cons: The doors. Every Illini understands this and you will soon, too. The UGL also tends to be strict about food. You may think you can sneak it but there is a security guard patrolling the library that won’t hesitate to reprimand.

The UGL is a popular spot, so it can be tricky finding a space, especially during finals.

I fi nd I’m most productive at the UGL, but it can be distracting when I run into friends so I tend to stay on the silent floor.

You can also prevent having wandering eyes; I like the quiet, focused atmosphere but some of my friends complain that the library is too drab, especially since there’s limited natural light as the library is underground.

Illini Union Pros: Many different environments to choose from, so you

can work wherever best suits you. If you like background noise — the chatter of other students, the sound of cream being steamed for a latte — then the Courtyard Café could be the place for you.

If you’re like me and prefer a quieter environment, the Pine Lounge offers beauty, large desks, and an abundance of outlets.

The Union also has plenty of couches and comfy armchairs, and even a computer lab in the basement if you’d like to give your back a break and leave your laptop at home.

Also, a fi nals pro tip: if you’re having trouble finding a quiet place to study or need to be away from your roommate for a few days so you can stay up all night to study, the Illini Union Hotel rents rooms to students during Finals Week at a reduced rate.

Cons: The couches and armchairs are also popular for napping, so you may fi nd yourself trying to study amongst snoring or fighting your own eyelids to stay open.

The Courtyard Café also frequently hosts events in the evening, so they’ll sometimes ask everyone to get up and move somewhere else

so that they can rearrange the tables. I find the Courtyard Café’s tables to be a bit small, so I prefer it for short breaks between classes or club meetings.

Now, these are among my top study spaces, but there’s plenty more to explore!

Grainger Engineering Library is a huge hub for students across campus, regardless of their major.

There are also quiet, outdoor oases at Lincoln Hall.

Sometimes it’s best to study at the source of your learning: most campus buildings are left open in the evening so you can study in the classroom where you actually learn the material.

There are countless coffee shops around campus that offer good music, comfortable seating, friendly staff, and great tastes and smells.

Join floormates and study in one of the various residence hall lounges or even stay in your own room.

Hopefully this has provided you with a starting point for study spot experimentation and the tools necessary for finding yourself a good fit.

An audio adventure: Music in CU Venues on campus, in town attract acts big and small LILLIAN BARKLEY Assistant copy chief

T

he University’s music scene is an auditory oasis in a desert of corn.

It may come as a surprise that the area brings the best bands south of Chicago, but acts of all genres and sizes play throughout the year.

There’s no harm to staying in your dorm and listening to your favorite band through headphones, but you could also explore the area and gain some new favorite artists in the process.

On Campus The Canopy Club, 708 S. Goodwin Ave., offers a variety of acts including – but not at all limited to – EDM, folk, tribute bands and pop.

It’s small enough to have a good view of the stage from anywhere in the room.

If you’re used to seeing

larger acts from the back of the pit, Canopy Club’s shorter lines make it easier to be close enough to see the sweat on your favorite artist’s face.

House shows, while not a static venue, are an amazing way to see local acts.

Shows may only be advertised by wordof-mouth or on flyers, but keeping your ears and eyes open can lead to some amazing experiences.

The most talked-about show from last semester was The Orwells, who performed at a secret location.

Fans had to riddle out the details, then get tickets.

For classical and world music fans, the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts features numerous acts from around the world throughout the

year, as well as the Ellnora Guitar Festival in September.

Krannert also has “Hot Seats” and University student pricing, making it an affordable way to hear some of your favorites.

Foellinger Auditorium is one of the largest lecture halls on campus, but it also makes a great stage for acts such as Hoodie Allen, Mac DeMarco, ILoveMckonnen, and Bo Burnham.

Champaign University students shouldn’t be afraid to wander away from Campustown to take advantage of venues in downtown Champaign.

As a disclaimer, many of these venues are bars fi rst and foremost, so concertgoers under 19 should always check the age requirement beforehand.

Cowboy Monkey is tucked away at 6 Taylor St. and has something for everyone.

The stage is small with a long and narrow pit that leads to sprawling outdoor seating.

The set-up is a favorite of Champaign-Urbana sweethearts Elsinore, who broke their six-month hiatus on Cowboy Monkey’s stage on April 17.

The bar also has events every weekday, including trivia night, open mic, and tango.

The Pygmalion Festival is the largest musical festival in the area and occurs in September.

Mike ‘N’ Molly’s at 105 N. Market St. markets itself as a bar more than a music venue, touting a large beer garden and a variety of themed karaoke nights.

It still books enough local acts, like Tara Terra and That’s No Moon, to earn its place.

The Highdive, 51 E. Main St., is on honorary REO Speedwagon Way, a telling nod to Champaign’s musical history.

The venue primarily features indie rock and hosts high-profi le acts from the Pygmalion Festi-

val Series.

Festivals What is the Pygmalion Festival, you ask? It’s the area’s largest music festival, incorporating dozens of stages and bringing in acts like CHVRCHES, Best Coast, Major Lazer, and many more since beginning in 2005.

As with any music festival, tickets can be pricey – a basic music pass is $85 plus fees – but the lineup and atmosphere are worth the investment.

The festival also includes authors, craft-

ers, and technology panels through the weekend of September 25.

The CU Folk and Roots Festival is younger than Pygmalion, entering its seventh year.

On November 6 and 7, the festival will host music styles ranging from Americana to zydeco.

A festival wristband is $30, but bands will also host free jams and song-circles.

A food snob’s guide to food trucks DECLAN HARTY Managing editor for reporting

T

he evolution of food trucks in ChampaignUrbana continues to flourish, and I could not be more excited.

Within the last year, 38 mobile food licenses were granted on behalf of just Urbana by the CUPHD, according to Elizabeth Beaty, administrative services manager for Urbana.

In Champaign, there are 11 trucks currently licensed with some of the licenses operating with more than one truck, according to Kitty Strong,

licensing officer with the city of Champaign.

The fact is that the numbers are growing, and I hope that the increase in mobile-munchies never ends.

I’ve been widely criticized before for being a “food snob,” or someone who has ridiculous expectations and/or requirements about their food.

Some of mine include: I don’t consider soup a food (unless it’s a bisque or comes in a bread bowl), I don’t need any more ham

and cheese sandwiches (I had enough for lunch in high school), and I stick to what I know I like.

But when it comes to food trucks, there’s nothing that I don’t love.

The small businesses, the fact that my food is made in front of me and more often than not – the food rocks. Here’s my breakdown of some of my favorite food trucks on campus. It’s surprising just how many there are, but thankfully C-U has seen a massive influx of our mobile caterers.

Derald’s Food Truck C-U’s self proclaimed oldest food truck, Derald’s has been my favorite stop

on campus (other than Zorba’s) since I got to the University.

The hours of the truck are limited as it’s normally only there for lunch hours, but who can complain about breakfast sandwiches all day, cheap burgers all in a convenient spot right on Matthews Avenue near the Illini Union’s south patio?

Pandamonium Doughnuts

Cracked food truck is a staple for many food truck lovers in C-U. For me? I’m still not sold. For a restaurant that sells itself as a breakfast stop for students, the use of cream cheese and Mexican food took me slightly by surprise when I stopped by last year for the first time.

Have I given Cracked a full opportunity? Probably not, and I’m sure that it’s great, I just may have not found my dish on their menu yet.

I’m no food critic, but based on how much people love Cracked, I would say it’s defi nitely a need

Opened somewhere between 2012 and 2013 by University alumnus James Kyung, Pandamonium (in my opinion) brought food trucks onto the map in C-U and has led the charge since.

Its artisan, inventive doughnuts remind me of the Donut Vault in Chicago. Some of the innovative flavors that Pandamonium is known for include fruity pebbles, banana split and funfetti.

ometimes running on a treadmill becomes monotonous.

At that point, try the indoor tracks in the recreation centers on campus.

But when the view of the inside walls of the gym blend into one, nondescript blur, it might be time to start jogging outdoors.

Below, I have compiled a few of my favorite routes Take it with a grain of salt, remember always to run with the proper footwear (I say, as I type this with one foot in a brace and a fracture shoe...) and enjoy!

Full Campus Circuit - roughly 3.5 miles:

The University of Illinois is jampacked with opportunities to stay fit. If you are living in Urbana, the Campus Recreation Center East, or CRCE, is the place to be.

Do you want to take a swim in an Olympic-sized pool? Visit the Activities and Recreation Center, or ARC, in Champaign. There is plenty to do no matter what side of campus you are on.

Campus Recreation Center East (CRCE)

One could, of course, run in a larger concentric circle, encasing more of campus. This one just happens to hit most of the frequently populated spots on campus.

CRCE (pronounced ‘sir-see’) is less than ten minutes away from the Main Quad and right across the street from Allen Residence Hall.

It was remodeled in 2005, and since then it has become a go-to for students and anyone trying to get in a quick workout before heading to the Main Quad for class.

Smaller gym with all the perks One of the main advantages of working out at CRCE is that it has all the equipment necessary for a successful workout. Despite being the smaller gym, CRCE is equipped with cardio/ strength training machines and with weights/barbells.

If you are not a fan of running on a machine, there is also a mile indoor track.

For anyone looking to go for a swim, CRCE also houses an indoor aquatic pool with a water slide, volcano, and 12-person spa. You can enjoy a swim, relax in the spa, and feel like a kid again all in one place!

Dining Hall Route - Almost 3 miles:

This route is great for obvious reasons. If you need to stop for a snack or a drink of water, each of the checkpoints has a dining hall. Finally, you could run between ISR and the Ikenberry Commons to complete the route, or you could take the bus!

For students living in the residence halls, CRCE is quite convenient.

It is located in the center of Illinois Street Residence Halls, Allen Hall, Lincoln Avenue Residence Hall, Florida Avenue Residence Halls, and Pennsylvania Avenue Residence Halls. This means students can easily access the gym, either by walking or taking the MTD. There are several MTD buses that follow this route, enabling students to come from anywhere on campus.

The 12 Teal and 13 Silver buses both stop outside the center, and the 22 Illini bus stop is only a minute away.

Activities and Recreation Center (ARC) The ARC is located across from Memorial Stadium and is only a few

Members also have access to rental camping equipment at a low cost.

ARC instructional kitchen Being in college and living a healthy lifestyle can be challenging, but the ARC is prepared to help students with that, too. The center features an instructional kitchen that hosts healthy cooking classes, and group kitchen rentals are available.

You can also join in on a grocery store tour that will teach you how to shop healthy on a college budget.

Weight room As one of the country’s biggest recreation centers, the ARC includes a full weight room on the lower floor.

The weight room includes machines, barbells, dumbbells, a squat rack, and an area where members can deadlift.

But be wary, the center becomes crowded later in the evening, which means you may have to wait your turn on the machines.

Sauna and indoor and outdoor pool No matter what the season is, students have access to a pool.

You can practice swimming, take a class, or just relax. The outdoor Olympic-sized pool is open during warmer months. You can also go into the sauna after a swim or a long workout.

Both the ARC and CRCE offer Group Fitness packages for all members and special prices for students, who have the option of purchasing an annual or semester-long pass that gives unlimited access to classes at both centers.

The classes range from yoga to strength training like BODYPUMP. You have the choice of attending either gym, allowing you more flexibility with your schedule.

Despite what your goals are, the recreation centers at the University are equipped to meet your needs.

Make sure to take advantage of all there is to offer!

O

ne of the biggest adjustments you will likely make in college is the amount of time you spend studying and doing homework.

In high school, you may have been like me and gotten away with reviewing your notes during lunch for the exam you had the very next period.

Trust me though; college is a whole different animal.

You will find yourself spending countless nights tucked away in either in your dorm room or the library, feverishly cramming as much information as you can about Kepler’s Law and blackbody radiation in preparation for that 8 a.m. astronomy test you have tomorrow morning.

No matter how much you say you’re going to stay ahead of the curve and start studying weeks in advance for a test, like your professors said you should, you’re not. Things will start to pile up and you’ll end up opening your study guide for the first time at 7 p.m. the night before your exam, wondering where all that extra time went.However, there’s more to pulling an all-nighter than simply throwing back energy drinks and slaving away at your notes.

At one point or another, you’re going to get hungry.

With most dining halls having closed by 8 p.m., students must turn to alternative sources. Lucky for us, Champaign has an array of restaurants and food spots

that stay open into the early hours of the morning. Here are some of the best options for when you need a quick bite to eat during your study break.

Jimmy John’s When you’re looking for something quick and filling, Jimmy John’s is your best option. It has become the go-to option for many students during their late night study sessions. With an array of different sandwiches to choose from, you can’t really go wrong with any of them.

Jimmy John’s biggest selling point is its ability live up to its slogan “Freaky Fast Delivery”.

With six different locations around campus in Champaign-Urbana, there’s bound to be a Jimmy John’s delivery car just down the street from you. I can personally attest to their

speedy delivery; I once ordered Jimmy John’s and timed how long it took them to get to my doorstep.

The final time? Two and a half minutes. Flat. There’s nowhere else that will get you your food that fast.

Most locations on campus also deliver until about three to four in the morning, so the next time you’re pulling an all-nighter at the UGL and feel a rumbling in your tummy, give Jimmy John’s a call. Just make sure not to get caught eating it by the UGL food police.

Insomnia Cookies We’ve all been there. It’s about two in the morning and you’re only two pages deep into your 10-page paper due at 10 a.m.

As much as you try to crank out eight more pages on the ramifications of contemporary religious prac-

tices on political behavior at the state level, you just can’t ignore your craving for something sweet. Something chocolatey.

Whether you just want a couple cookies to satisfy your sweet tooth or a whole box after accepting the fact that you are never going to finish your paper on time, Insomnia Cookies is there for you.

From the classic snicker doodle to the gluttonous double chocolate chunk, there’s something for every kind of sweets lover. It’s the perfect place to get your sugar fix while you slug through papers and notes alike.

Chopstix Everyone has his or her favorite Chinese take-out place. It’s usually pretty cheap and has a questionable health grade, but, despite all that, we go

back time and time again.

Chopstix is that spot in Champaign.

Sure it may have been closed down numerous times for failing health inspections, and the people may seem like they are screaming in your face when you order, but the food can’t be beat. It’s the greasy, MSG-laden Chinese food we’ve grown to love as broke college students.

There are some who are graced with the beauty of a car on campus (despite the remarkably disturbing parking rates …), but for most, determining the best way to get back home or to another college is difficult if you’re new to C-U. There are more options than you probably could have ever imagined though.

Buses, trains, carpooling; there’s even an airport just miles from campus (even though that’s probably not the most cost effective method to get home, instate or out).

From companies to prices, here is a breakdown of the best travel options.

It’s move-in day and the sweat drips down your back, seeping through your orange and blue t-shirt on a 95-degree August day. The car can’t move slow enough, and it doesn’t help that you most likely are trying to learn the good radio stations in Champaign-Urbana. (I strongly suggest WPGU 107.1 if you enjoy alternative).

The sheer mass of people heading toward their dorms, apartments or houses is only causing you to get more flustered. And all you can think about is how are you going to keep dealing with the chaos of travel?

At the end of the day, traveling to and from campus can be a pain. But

the routes from C-U extend all the way to Alabama and Los Angeles, and after speaking with one of the representatives from BT, the customer service there is great, especially once you learn about the $1 tickets.

Illini breakdown: Season by season PETER BAILEY-WELLS Sports editor

A

fter a turbulent offseason, it will be a unique year in Illinois sports. Former players levied several accusations of player mistreatment within the athletic department, and as we look to the 2015-2016 season, Athletic Director Mike Thomas needs some on-the-field success to distract him from the University’s off-field problems.

I’ll be breaking down the teams by season.

Fall After making his first bowl game as Illinois’ head coach, Tim Beckman and the Illini football team

need to follow up with a big season. Apart from the off-the-field situations that Beckman has dealt with since his arrival, things have been moving slowly, but in a positive direction.

Beckman and Co. will be looking for a fi nish in the top half of the Big Ten. The Illinois volleyball team should continue its recent run of success, buoyed by returning AllAmerican Jocelynn Birks and the No. 1 recruiting class in the country. The team lost in the Sweet Sixteen to No. 5 Florida last season.

The Illinois soccer team is gunning for a return to the NCAA tournament, led

by Jannelle Flaws, who is on pace to set the Illinois career goals record.

The Illinois swim and dive team has fi nished 12th in the Big Ten for two straight seasons and is expected to fi nish in that part of the conference again.

Winter The Illinois men’s basketball team needs to fi nish in the upper half of the Big Ten tournament for John Groce to remain in Illinois fans’ good graces. Luckily for Groce, he returns senior point guard Tracey Abrams and adds transfer center Mike Thorne. If the Illini can win the close Big Ten games that they didn’t last year, they’ll be tournament bound.

The men’s and women’s track and field and cross-country teams are widely different. The men’s team is a top-25 team, while the women’s team has some standout individuals, but doesn’t have the team power to make national waves.

O

ne of the greatest ways to get involved on campus and start getting the orange and blue blood flowing is by kicking off your college experience by going to the sporting events that the Illini have to offer.

There are nine varsity sports that students can watch in the fall: football,

volleyball, soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s cross country, wrestling, and swimming.

A lot of people judge college sports programs based on their football and men’s basketball teams.

Though these Illini teams haven’t necessarily been national contenders in recent years, there are

teams on campus that are a force to be reckoned with by the rest of the nation.

Even the sports that the Illini are not so reputable for are always fun to experience.

One idea that my floormates and I had was that before the end of our freshman year, we wanted to be able to say that we had attended at least one event for every sport.

This was one of the best decisions we could have made.

Not only did we become a lot closer by spending more time together, but it also provided me with the opportunity to meet others who enjoyed going to sporting events as much as I do.

This way, when I needed someone to go to another game with me, I didn’t have to worry because I could simply text one of the peo-

ple I had met at a previous game.

You could say that I had it easy because I could go to the games with my floormates, but that wasn’t always the case.

Sometimes I just decided to go to a game by myself.

It might be awkward at first, but you have to remember that you already have a talking point with the other students around you: just talk about the game you are watching!

Even if you don’t know much about the sport or the team itself, other students are usually willing to educate you.

You don’t have to go to every sporting event in order to find a group of people to go with.

You’ll find the people who are die-hards and go to every game, but you’ll also find the casual fans who

don’t go to every game but still want to show off their Illini jerseys every once in awhile.

The point is that there’s someone at the game that will share your common interest.

Maybe it will stay steady as a friend to sit next to and small talk about the latest injuries or current standings.

It could even turn into a group of friends who you’ll strategize back and forth with throughout the entire game, giving your best Tim Beckman impression.

You might even find your lifelong friends who will be there to talk about Illinois teams for years to come.

saiah Martinez told media before his freshman season that he would go undefeated and be the national champion.

Seemed like the typical optimism of a freshman.

Until he delivered on his promise.

Martinez went 35-0, becoming the national champion at 157 lbs.

Martinez dominated his opposition with his strong and fl ashy style, making him simply amazing to watch.

He was voted Illini of the Year by the Daily Illini and was in the running for the Dan Hodge trophy, college wrestling’s version of the Heisman.

He’s even been compared to Cael Sanderson, the only wrestler to go undefeated his entire college career.

Jannelle Flaws #3, Forward : Soccer

his sixth year senior has a great story.

Her freshman year, a leg injury sidelined her.

Then, in her redshirt sophomore season, she had another leg injury that sidelined her once more.

But in the last two seasons, she has blossomed into one of the most feared strikers in the country.

She scored 23 goals in her redshirt junior year, which tied for the lead in

the nation.

The season after, she was still deadly with 17 goals. S he has been the Big Ten Forward of the year two times in a row.

Now, after the NCAA granted her a sixth year of eligibility due to her injuries, she is poised to set the Illinois record for all-time goals scored, as she’s only five away.

Jocelynn Birks #7, Outside hitter: Volleyball

llinois Volleyball is riding a lot of hype. They are coming off of their fourth NCAA tournament appearance in four years. They also play in one of the top conferences in the Big Ten that has last year’s national champion, Penn State, in it’s ranks.

The player you should be watching though is redshirt senior Jocelynn Birks. She has been and will continue to be a key player for this team. Of returning players, she is the most decorated.

Last season, she was a sec-

ond team All-American, All Big-Ten, and made a slew of all-tournament teams.

Another player on the verge of breaking a record, Birks will be closing in on the kills record this season.

She even represented Illinois in a Big Ten volleyball tour around Europe. She got some experience playing a lot of international opponents.

Look for her and the newly-vamped Illini Volleyball team to make some noise this season.

Block-I offers unique piece of history JOEY GELMAN Assistant sports editor for on-air

W

hen I think of College Football, I want to be in an electric environment.

When it comes to Illini student sections, no matter the sport, the Orange and Blue Faithful line up in droves to support their teams and give the ultimate home-field advantage.

The football student section at the University of Illinois, “Block I,” is an experience I will always cherish, and one you will too as a new member of the Fighting Illini family.

Before diving into the

exciting atmosphere of Gameday, lets start with a little history of the section. Before the historic 92-year-old Memorial Stadium was even built in 1923, students started the “Block I” as a pep club to allow students to become more involved at U of I football games in 1910.

In 1924, Block I was moved to the east side of the stadium along the 40 yard line, where a portion still stands today.

However, as of 2007, the all-student section of Block I was created in the North End-Zone of the stadium, creating

an exciting environment with almost 2,000 students cheering on their Illini, accompanied by the famous “Marching Illini” marching band just a few rows in front of them.

There is one tradition, however, that U of I holds strong in Block I, and as you walk past the columns and into historic Memorial Stadium, there will be one thing waiting for you at halftime; Card Stunts.

Starting in 1926, this tradition has stood the test of time and is a staple at every U of I home football game. Just before the Marching Illini’s famous “Three-One” Medley, all students in Block I are given a set of Orange, Blue and White life-size cards and a slip of paper, dictating the order. Lead-

ers of Block I, called “Block Heads” along with Illini Pride, the overarching student group of all Illini student sections, will have created a sequence for the cards, depending on your seat to create incredible designs.

These range from the Alma Mater, to a literal Block I, and even can spell out the famous Illini chant “Oskee- WowWow.” The stunts go full throttle on Dad’s Day and Homecoming.

You can keep this one from your parents, but a fan favorite is when the cards change to create two full side-by-side beer mugs.

Two Block Heads hold a rope across the section at the top, and as they race down, once the rope passes you, you must change

your card as they race to see which mug will be “finished” first.

In addition to the card stunts, if you are going to be in the student section, you better be ready to scream, chant and most importantly, dance.

There are countless dance and cheer routines from jingling your keys and doing the Block I dance at kick-off, “OskeeWow-Wow “cheers after touchdowns, longhorns and the Imperial March/ Darth Vader at punts, and to keep the rest of the stadium entertained during commercial breaks with the ever-popular William Tell dance and much more.

While I could go on for hours on the traditions that surround what many Illini consider the best College Football atmosphere in the country, my advice would be to join and see it in action this upcoming football season.

The Chicago Bears, no the NFL itself, may have not gotten to where it is today, without the help of some key Illini.

The fi rst of these great Illini was Chicago-born George Halas, a man whose name has become synonymous with the Bears and the NFL. Halas played football and baseball for the Illini and helped the team to the

1918 Big Ten championship. Halas later played in the 1919 Rose Bowl for the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. The reason Halas did not represent Illinois was because so many men were in the Military due to World War I, the Rose Bowl was played by teams representing military bases to make for the lack of college teams.

Halas went on to become the MVP of that game and ended up graduating from Illinois soon after.

Halas eventually moved on to other ventures in sports, playing for the New York Yankees and the Hammond Pros.

Later, Halas moved on to manage and play for the Decatur Stayleys. Halas eventually went on to buy the team and move them to Chicago, renaming them the Bears.

Halas loved the Illini colors so much that he decided to make the Bears wear Orange and Blue, a trend that has continued to this day.

As a player/manager/ owner, Halas was able to dominate in the early days of the NFL. The team was able to win eight NFL championships in that era

and signed another Illini great who would change the game of pro football.

That player was Red Grange. The “Galloping Ghost” became a legend in Illinois history and is seen by many as one of the greatest, if not the best football player ever.

Grange brought the Illini into the national scene, beating powerhouses like Michigan and UPenn to put Illinois on the map.

Grange’s statue stands tall on the west side of Memorial Stadium, and the brand new Tailgating area for fans is named in his honor. Grange Grove will be opening up this season.

The Bears signed

Grange within a day of him fi nishing his career for the Fighting Illini.

Grange is often seen as the player who is known for legitimizing pro football. The game was thought of to be something for students to play, not something that you did for a living.

The second Illini to make his mark was Dick Butkus. Along with Red Grange, Butkus is the only other Illini football player to have his number retired for Illinois football.

The two-time All-American and Big Ten Player of the Year made his impact with Illinois, wearing the number 50 in college, before switching to the

iconic 51 for the Bears.

Butkus saw immense success in college, and that continued in the NFL. Next to Walter Payton, Butkus is one of the most iconic Bears players, being a 12-time pro bowler and 10-time all-pro. The Bears were not a great team in his time, but Butkus was arguably the most feared defensive player in his era, if not of all time.

These Illini players would shape the Bears and Pro Football, and their impact is felt to this day.
