T

his summer, I began my newest job position: a communications intern for the Office of Technology Management.

On my first day, as I grabbed a collection of notebooks and pencils from my book bag, climbed three flights of stairs to my new office and learned about the duties of my position, my jitters dissolved. I realized this job would help me harness and utilize the skills I learned in the classroom.

For college students, jobs and internships are invaluable experiences. Some let students do work that directly applies to their major, while other entry-level positions simply build time management and communications skills. While students learn these important skills, however, their jobs can also help fill their wallets.

But when you’re new to campus, it can be hard to know where to look for jobs. Here’s some advice on how to find the position to suit you.

■ Befriend professors When in doubt, ask your professors. This advice is applicable for every question you have throughout your experience in college: Never underestimate the value of your professors.

department. Your professors are there to help you succeed and learn. They want you to be the best that you can be. When you take the time to build a relationship with them, most will love to help you.

■ Befriend your career services staff The College of Media Career Services also helped me throughout my job search.

They not only knew about opportunities, but they helped me craft, revise and improve my resume. They read draft after draft of my cover letter, and they even showed me how to be successful in an interview.

Never be afraid to approach your major’s career services department or even the University’s general Career Center. Their job is literally to help you find a job. But like your professors, you must take the first step and seek them out.

■ Use I-Link The Career Center on campus sponsors a website called I-Link, which displays hundreds of jobs and opportunities both on and off campus. It’s accessible and easy-to-use.

It allows you to upload and send your resume to employers directly through the site. It has a helpful advanced search tab, where you can find positions based on your major, interests and skill sets.

■ The University’s Virtual Job Board The University has a specific webpage dedicated to helping its students find part-

time employment. These positions are all diverse — everything from research assistants and clerical work, to long-term and seasonal commitment. Just plug in the type of job you want and hit submit — it’s as easy as that.

Students can even use the Board as a way to discover jobs off campus and in the C-U community, like retail work at Market Place Shopping Center, for example.

Students can find exactly what works for them when they are in need of extra monetary support throughout their college experience.

■ Networking Finally, don’t be afraid to reach out to people. The worst they can say is no.

I found a freelance position simply by emailing an editor and asking about an opportunity to write for their magazine.

Reaching out to people in your field, or even asking your friend who works at McDonald’s to put in a good word for you when you apply, can make a big difference.

Once people know your name and face, you will stand out from the crowd. They will realize how much you care and point out or even offer jobs your way.

Making a college dorm ‘home sweet home’ KAANAN RAJA Assistant opinions editor

T

his past semester, I moved out of Pennsylvania Avenue Residence Hall after living there for a year.

I have to say that moving in, I certainly didn’t expect to call the 11’ by 11’ squarefoot-room “home sweet home.” In fact, after many nights of stumbling out of the showers and not having to worry about scrubbing the shower head or sinks that were readily accessible, I think it’s safe to say there will be a few thing I’ll miss about dorm life.

Here are a couple tips I’ve learned over my freshman year on how to survive the seemingly challenging—yet surprising simple—ways of dorm life.

■ Keep your door open No, this isn’t some metaphor for your college experience – although, I do encourage you to keep an open mind. Here, I mean literally keep your door open on your first day of college.

Your move-in day will be just as terrifying for you as it will be for the rest of your floormates. So do yourself a favor and get to know them the easy way – you never know who will knock to say hi.

In fact, I can personally thank some Scotch tape and an open door as the starting point of conversation between me and my future apartment roommates for next semester. It was through keeping the – quite frankly – ugly, oak-colored doors wide open my first day of college that I was able to connect with some of the closest friends I made on campus.

So maybe the metaphor does work: Keep your door open in college, because you never know what experience will come knocking.

■ Take advantage of the all-you-can-eat dining halls I’m not going to lie — one of the aspects of dorm life I will probably miss the most is the accessible dining halls only a few paces away from my grumbling stomach.

You could walk straight from class halfdrowsy and not even have to bat an eyelash as food was already prepared for you.

While dining hall food can never live up to our fantasies, they truly do incorporate options. As a vegetarian, I was a little anxious I would be munching on plain pasta and salad the entire year.

Yet the dining hall truly did outshine itself, always keeping everything from a sandwich bar to PAR’s famous stir fry meals. The best part? Just plop a plate on the conveyor belt for cleaning and go grab seconds.

Just make sure you keep the term “freshman fifteen” at the forefront of your mind.

■ You’re not a kid anymore This may simply be a reminder to some and a wake-up call to others. While college dorms certainly do a great job at catering to some needs, they can’t help you learn responsibility—that part you have to learn all on your own.

Therefore, while you may no longer be chastised for not tidying up your room, do it as a favor to both your roommate and yourself and clean up after yourself.

While the open lounges are spaces you don’t personally need to clean, don’t leave your empty water bottles and leftover chips and expect others to clean up after you.

Show responsibility especially in the bathroom. Last semester, the women’s bathroom stalls were covered in Raven Symone flyers with captions that read, “If at first you don’t flush… That’s nasty.”

Using “That’s So Raven” quotes may help restore some order in the bathroom of Saunders First Floor, but don’t be the person that wreaked havoc in the first place.

■ Communication is key Sharing a walk-in-closet-sized room with another human being can sometimes be difficult – especially when you’ve never even met the other person.

Therefore, in order to be respectful and avoid issues from the start, set up some ground rules for both of you to comply with, whether it be when you can invite friends over or whether you’re comfortable having multiple alarms go off in the morning (or seven, in my case—sorry about that, roomie).

I met my roommate for the first time when I walked into my dorm room, and I was skeptical of whether we’d truly get along. But it was the little things that helped us bond – sending a quick text before we invited multiple friends over, asking before we took the last Blue Bunny ice cream bar in our freezer, etc.

I scored big-time with a roommate who even woke me up for my 8 a.m. classes when her classes didn’t start until 11 a.m.

Yeah, I know—not all roommates will be that considerate.

In fact, the reality is most people will not instantly become BFFs with their roommates. However, by following basic considerations for privacy and by keeping constant communication with one another, your stay for the year can become truly enjoyable.

Study abroad offers a taste of the real world

tudy abroad has a bad reputation. Parents hear the phrase “study abroad,” and automatically replace “study” with “party.”

They see horrible visions of their child with a pint in hand, hunkered down at an Irish pub instead of hitting the books.

In actuality, study abroad’s benefits are inclusive of experiences both in and beyond the classroom. It’s not just some extended vacation. If anything, it’s the same beneficial combination of academic and social the University provides, amped up in the context of a foreign culture.

I’m studying abroad in England in the fall, but my parents never fought me on it.

My mom is a University alumna. During her time as a student, she left campus for her entire junior year to study at Lancaster University in Lancaster, Lancashire, United Kingdom. Looking back, she recounts her academic experience as excellent, but it was always the people and the places that had her wishing she could go back.

She went abroad and came back a better version of herself.

You know why you should study abroad?

Because it will scare the living crap out of you.

Think about it like this: The moment you graduate from college — which will be sooner than you think — you’re thrown into the deep end. College is a cushy, carefree version of adult life. The closest we get to being real adults here is the few mouse clicks it takes to file taxes on the “You’re Broke,” free version of TurboTax. Whether you’re studying abroad for a few weeks, a few months, or a whole year, you’re going to learn an important lesson or two on how to fend for yourself. You might have to navigate your way through a foreign city. They might not speak your native language or that language you learned half-

heartedly in high school. Or maybe they do, and it sounds like a foreign language anyway. They use strange slang. They do strange things. And then there’s school.

The grading system might be radically different from American grading, or classes in your area of study might be significantly harder there.

Whether you’re studying abroad for a few weeks, a few months, or a whole year, you’re going to learn an important lesson or two on how to fend for yourself.

And maybe, worst of all, you can’t call your mom for help. Your best friend isn’t a quick phone call away. You miss your dog, your significant other, good, cheap Mexican food. You’re in a strange place with strange people, and man, will you feel all alone.

So there’ll be that initial loneliness and that fear of the unknown. But you’ll be okay. You’ll be great. You’re going to learn how to ask for help. Or just what a natural you are at making friends. You’ll gain confidence with every bad gracias. The fear won’t get you down.

The fear won’t get you down, plus you’ll be exploring the catacombs of Rome or acing a Spanish literature class in Barcelona with actual Spanish classmates. It’s not going to be easy, but that’s the best part.

It’ll be like figuring out some impossible trig proof, all that satisfaction after the blood, sweat and tears — plus a camel ride in Morocco.

You know what will get you a job someday? Being able to think on your feet. Being confident in yourself and the choices you make. Get to know yourself, and you can do anything. Honestly, I’m excited for you already.

Study abroad because getting ready for the real world has never looked so good.

Avoiding procrastination during college CHARLOTTE COLLINS Assistant daytime editor

Y

ou might think you know how to push deadlines; in high school, you could probably forget about your essay until the day before it was due (maybe the actual day it was due if you were like me).

You probably think you can continue this habit in college. You might think you’re the best procrastinator there is.

Let me introduce you to the world of college procrastination I don’t advise you to continue your ways of putting things off, but if you’re going to do it anyway, allow me to help you out.

You should know, first off, that it’s easy to put things off here. People will try to convince you that it’s a town surrounded by a sea of corn and nothingness, but there’s always something to do.

Your work may be the kind that will have you picking up another TV series or doing literally nothing. Nothing, I mean it. You might stare at a wall in lieu of starting your essay or project. It happens, trust me.

Be organized. Get a calendar, a whiteboard, an assignment book. If you’re going to put things off, you better at least know when they’re due. You’re a deadline pusher, not a deadline breaker.

Find your favorite places to do schoolwork. Go to one of the zillions of libraries on campus. No, they aren’t all full.

Also, don’t go to a bar; the bar is never going to help you with school. The bar doesn’t care about your grades. The bar is inanimate, frankly, and it will never love you back, no matter how much you may love it. Go to the bar after your grades come out because that is when you are going to need to go the bar.

Do not, do not, I repeat, do not give in to the nap. The “15-minutes-I’ll snap rightout-of-it-I’ll-set-my-alarm-no-really-I-will” nap is enemy number one. You think you’re going to pull an all-nighter because you put your essay off until the last possible minute.

If you rationalize the nap, it’s already over.

Commit to the all-nighter. Go get a coffee and sit in a public place where you have the chance of embarrassing yourself if you doze off. Do you want to wake up gasping and freak everybody out after having one of those falling-off-a-cliff dreams in a cafe?

Get it together.

Overall, you need to take care of yourself.

Give yourself the opportunity to succeed by following these steps and maybe not digging yourself into this hole in the first place.

Hidden gems: architecture abounds across campus

The concentric squares in squares in squares are immensely satisfying to the eye, and if you are there at the right time, the bells might even ring just for you.

Try to ignore the comic sans in the University seal at your feet though. I’m serious.

If you haven’t noticed it before, it becomes painfully apparent when the lettering is extremely large and incredibly close.

The greenhouses Did you know you can explore the greenhouses? You can actually go inside them!

The Greenhouse Conservatory and Plant Collections is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

If you miss the hours for the Conservatory, you can still read all the interesting old articles and newspaper clippings that are posted on the walls of the greenhouse and roam the halls of the building, just so you can say you did.

The courtyard between Wohlers Hall, David Kinley Hall and the Architecture Building The tables and benches beyond the archway between Wohlers Hall and the Architecture Building make a wonderful site for a picnic.

While you’re there, see if you can find the face (I can’t decide whether it’s supposed to be a cherub) on the Architecture Building and the date at the top of the pipe running down Wohlers.

Alternatively, if you’re the kind of person who listens to nature playlists and keeps that one track with the sound of a bubbling stream on repeat, the Weston Fountain on the Kinley side is for you. Serene and calm, it’s the perfect place to read a book or take a nap.

Krannert Center for the Performing Arts Krannert’s roof is a beautiful stargazing

spot. Second only to the South Quad at night in terms of how much of the sky you can see, standing atop Krannert gives you more of a sense of proximity to the stars.

This building is actually quite wonderful; without even stepping inside it, you can stargaze on the roof, sit in the outdoor amphitheater or even explore the patches of foliage that are scattered on top of the building.

Inside the building is another story. I cannot even count the number of times I have done my physics homework at the tables inside Krannert. If you want the coffeeshop ambiance without having to go to one, this is the place to be.

Decision to go greek provides new experiences, friends ANGELICA LAVITO Social media director

As

you move in on Thursday, August 20, you’ll meet lots of new people on campus. One question you’re bound to get asked is whether or not you plan on joining a sorority or fraternity.

You may have thought about this before — or maybe not. You may be dying to join Greek life. You may be dreading it. Or, you may be someone like me, who had thought about it but was not sure whether or not Greek life was for me.

Before I moved into my dorm at Oglesby Hall two years ago, I had considered whether or not to sign up for formal recruitment. I had seen movies with sorority girls and never considered myself one of them. But my older cousin who was in a fraternity at the University of Dayton urged me to consider registering for recruitment.

He promised me that the vision of a sorority girl I had in my head was inaccurate, and that there is no “stereotypical sorority girl.” I agreed to keep an open mind and at the very least go through recruitment and drop if I didn’t think joining a sorority was for me.

I followed through with my plan and reg-

istered for formal recruitment. As the first round began, I met girls in different houses and realized how right my cousin was. No two girls were the same, and none of the girls I met fit the stereotypical mold we often see in the movies.

I continued with recruitment and joined a sorority that I knew I wanted to be part of the first time I walked through the door. As I begin my junior year, I could not be happier with my decision to register for recruitment freshman year.

All of my sisters are incredibly unique. No two of us are the same, but we share similar ideals. There’s a common perception that sorority girls are always focused on partying, but I would ask people who think that to meet the girls in my house who study for more hours than I think I could ever physically handle.

Living in the house gives you a chance to live with 50 of your best friends, a concept that terrified me, as I am an only child who’s not used to living with that many people. As I moved out at the end of this past semester, though, I left wishing that I could do it all again because it was truly one of the best experiences of my life.

Although I am happy I chose to go Greek, I know plenty of people on campus who did not make that choice and still have great experiences at the University. Joining a sorority or a fraternity is not for everyone,

Any young woman can sign up for formal recruitment. At any point during the process, a potential new member can drop. Registering for recruitment does not bind you to joining.

Either way, give it a try. You might find yourself a home away from home on campus and a house of girls who inspire you each and every day.

Navigating campus using cellphone applications MEGAN JONES Editor in chief

F

irst arriving on campus with 40,000 students can be overwhelming and even navigating your dorm can seem like a challenge. The following apps are useful to every University student.

■ Blackboard Mobile Most professors use Illinois Compass, a platform through Blackboard Learn, to help post announcements, post grades, submit assignments and take quizzes.

Downloading this app will help you stay on top of any changes a professor might make and allow you to see your newly posted grades right away.

■ UI Dining app The University’s dining hall app shows all the different meals that are being served across all the dining halls. The app shows you how many meals and credits you have left, along with each dining hall’s operating hours. If you’re looking to explore the halls and try different foods, the app can help ensure that you know what is being served before traveling out of your typical dorm.

It can also show the Late Night After Dark meals and the convenience stores sometimes open in different halls.

■ ZONDR If you plan to hit up the bars and the nightlife at the University, Zondr is the app for you. By listing the top bars near Green Street in Campustown, the app provides information on if the bar is charging cover, the ratio from males to females and the line outside of the bar. It begins to update around 10 p.m. and also shows the bars drink and food specials for that night. The app was developed by University students.

■ CU Buses Buses became my #1 mode of transportation, getting me to class when I was in a hurry or to a far away spot off campus.

In order to navigate when a bus is coming, or if it’s going to be late, using an app ensures you don’t get stuck or lost in any place. My personal favorite is the Illini Bus app, but they are offer multiple - both iPhone and Android specific for the Champaign Urbana Mass Transit District bus system. The system allows you to create your own trips and find where stops are in places that may be unfamiliar to you.

■ Illinois Campus Rec The University has two recreation centers: The ARC and CRCE, whose formal names I won’t bog you down with. The Campus Rec app allows students to see the activity level of the centers so you

can find the best time to go and find an open court to use. It is updated every 30 minutes and will help decide whether it’s time to make a trip to the gym.

■ Fighting Illini Gameday If you’re an Illini athletics fan, this app is for you. It keeps tabs on all the Fighting Illini teams and actively keeps scores on game days. It’s the best way to keep up to date and read stories on the teams, too.

ollege is the time to try new things.

That is a phrase you will hear plenty of times throughout college, especially during your freshman year. It can become a bit repetitive. Despite that, if you keep that mindset through college, you can discover so much about yourself.

Between classes, hanging out, social clubs, etc., college can be a blur and time flies by. There is so much that not only the University, but Champaign-Urbana can offer you.

Starting with Quad Day, a slew of opportunities will present themselves to you.

Every single club on campus is going to want you to join their organization.

From the dozens of clubs you will learn about and the fliers they hand out, you might only actually join one or two. You may join Best Buddies after having been a member in high school, or join Tae Kwon Do at the University because you trained in it growing up.

While joining these clubs is great and you can continue a lot of the activities you used to do, they also don’t expose you to newer things. The new kind of freedom and independence that college affords you is what will lead you to fi nding yourself.

Without constant parent supervision and the ability to make your own schedule, you will fi nd that you have a lot of control on what you do. Take advantage of this freedom by trying the things that interest you.

If you ever had an inkling that it might be worth experiencing, do it. If you really loved playing Super Smash Bros. growing up, maybe look into joining the Competitive Super Smash Bros Club to try your hand at playing on a higher level. Maybe you always wanted to skydive and see what it’s like — there’s a Registered Student Organization for that, too.

Of course, clubs are not the only way you can experience new things in college.

Maybe you have never thought about going to a campus bar or drinking tea at a Japanese cultural house, but the University offers you that opportunity. This is the prime time to try these things.

Off campus, there are things like the Roger Ebert Film Festival or the many restaurants downtown that can open your eyes to a whole new world.

Nobody likes every new thing they try.

But knowing what you don’t like is a part of the self-discovery you can undergo in college. In addition, you may fi nd out you had a hidden passion for something you were never exposed to back home.

hen it comes to getting involved on a large campus, it could be difficult to figure out where to start or look. Take a look at these outlets for inspiration.

Registered Student Organizations RSOs) are a great way to channel your interests both inside and outside of your major and meet others who share your passions. With over 1,000 RSOs, it seems impossible to find one that won’t spark your interests. In the event that you don’t find the perfect organization for you, students are encouraged to start their own organizations. With thousands of students on campus, it’s more than likely that you will be able to recruit others with the same interests.

Fraternities & Sororities Joining Greek life will not only help you get involved, but also make friendships that will last a lifetime. Becoming a part of a fraternity or sorority offers positions in leadership, networking opportunities, and the chance to participate in community service. Living with your fellow brothers or sisters is encouraged in order to fully experience life on campus.

Events Another way to get involved at U of I is to simply look up campus events. The Illini Union’s website posts daily events that are going on around campus. Participate in sporting events, arts & culture, motivational speeches, and even celebrity appearances.

Volunteer Work Feeling charitable? The University offers

many opportunities to volunteer. The Office of Volunteer Programs provides workshops and connects students with people and opportunities to get involved with the community, some of which offer the chance to travel outside of the state and even country.

Jobs & Internships If you’re looking for professional, or even personal growth, seeking a job or internship on campus may be a good way to get involved during the school year. Taking a visit to the Career Center will go a long way, as they provide plenty of workshops and feedback in subjects ranging from resume building to interviewing. Obtaining a job or internship will open doors to future opportunities, as well as build your network of contacts.

Study Abroad Build bonds with fellow classmates by traveling around the world with them.

Studying abroad can offer a new perspective, pose interesting challenges, and teach in a way that wouldn’t be achievable on campus. There are a variety of opportunities for programs throughout the globe.

Intramurals Looking for an opportunity to spend quality time with friends, meet new people, and stay in shape? The University’s Campus Recreation offers a variety of intramurals sports for each season. In addition, there are numerous other programs and activities to join at U of I’s two campus recreation centers including aquatics, rock climbing, healthy cooking programs, ice skating, and more.

Traveling across campus, taking chances brings best out of dining hall options Plenty of options, resources for meal plan users FATIMA FARHA Assistant news editor

D

ining halls are full of various types of food in copious amounts, available for students to indulge in as they please during their meals three times a day.

It’s pretty great. With so many options, it should be easy and somewhat enjoyable to eat in the dining halls.

But what many students don’t know before entering college is how to take full advantage of the dining halls, especially when the food starts to become unsatisfying.

As the days go by, the meals start becoming repetitive, causing them to taste dull and the initial excitement over so much food begins to wane.

However, there are several ways to make sure your daily meals aren’t boring and you’re actually satisfied with your food; after all, the meals should be worth the money you’re paying for them.

There’s an app for that First and foremost, you need the free University dining app. Not only does it show you the different menus for each dining hall, it also shows the menus for the different speciality meals that each dining hall offers each week.

The app will also show you how many meals you have eaten for the week, along with how many credits you have left.

With the dining app, you can pick and choose which one you want to go to, so you don’t have to be stuck with eating something you’re really not in the mood for.

Taking advantage of all the dining halls One of the perks of having a meal plan on campus is having access to every single dining hall in the University residence halls. In total, there are seven dining halls on campus where students can swipe in with their meal plan during designated times for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Considering which residence hall you live in, you’ll probably eat in that hall’s specific dining hall most of the time because of the convenience in location.

But every dining hall serves different meals each day, so there may be a chance that another dining hall is serving food you would rather eat than the one in your residence hall.

Using the dining app, you can see

which dining hall is serving what, so you are free to choose for yourself.

If you have to step aside from the menu...

Panini makers and waffle machines are your friends. They’re your best friends. These are available at all dining halls, and they’re useful when absolutely nothing on the menu is fitting your mood.

There is always bread and different

It’s pretty great, with so many options it should be easy and somewhat enjoyable to eat in the dining halls. meats and cheeses at any dining hall, along with tomato, lettuce, cucumbers, and so on, for a quick panini.

The waffle machines are easy to use, since the batter is premade, and you can customize your own waffle with whipped cream, butter, chocolate chips, different syrups and any other way you want.

These can be life savers when nothing else seems to be good enough to eat.

However, at PAR and ISR, there are All You Can Eat After Dark times, which run from 8 p.m.- 12 a.m., all seven days a week. The menus do differ each day, but they’re also available on the dining app.

When it’s late, and you’re really hungry but not in the mood for spending money, the late night options are the best way to go.

Other aspects to take advantage of Each dining hall has its own perks, which you will come to learn as you progress into the semester. All of them have salad bars with many options, so if you’re just looking for something light, that is always available.

At Busey-Evans, you can make yourself quesadillas with the tortilla wraps they have available, at PAR you can make your own stir-fry and watch as the chefs prepare them with your choice of meat and noodles and at the Ike you can buy yourself a nice steak or burger from Don’s Chophouse with your credits. And these are just a few of the options.

Once you start eating at the dining halls, you’ll start figuring out your favorite way of eating your meals. Be sure to take advantage of these choices and you won’t get too tired of the food you’re eating. But if you do, just try something new!

■ Jarling’s Custard Cup Ask just about anyone in the area where the best place is to get ice cream, and they’ll likely mention Custard Cup. The shop has become a local staple across several generations, and is the perfect place to enjoy a summer evening hangout. Stop by and try for yourself their delicious, creamy ice cream and custard, which can be customized with a variety of fl avors and toppings.

■ Thara Thai This pan-Asian restaurant offers some of the most fl avorful dishes from various parts of Southeast Asia. From their pad thai to their yellow curry, the food here keeps me coming back on a regular basis. My personal favorite is the see ew pad thai, a dish that blends the two different noodles and fl avors into something delectable and one-of-a-kind.

Campus social scene worth a shot LAUREN MROZ Assistant sports editor

A

s you transition into the college lifestyle, there is one important detail that it is important to come to terms with: you’re not in high school anymore.

This can apply to a boatload of the different aspects. When you get to campus, you’ll realize that this is a big deal in particular when it comes to the party scene.

Of course, not everyone is a stereotypical party-your-face-off college kid that feels the need to go out every night — myself included.

But I do urge all students to at least give this form of a social experience a try.

Even if this is not your cup of tea, it is a great way to get yourself out there and meet new people. This way, you can get a feel for the whole experience and possibly fi nd a group of people that fits you well.

Personally, I like to go out and have a good time, but at the same time, I don’t feel the need to do this all the time. I bonded with some of who are now my closest friends over this trait that we all have in common.

Every college party scene is different, so let’s talk about what exactly the party scene at U of I incorporates.

The week before classes begin is what is known as rush week. This is when all of the fraternities are recruiting guys as potential pledges, so you’ll be able to fi nd a party at almost every frat house. You will most likely have a very easy time accessing alcohol at these parties, but that doesn’t mean you have to go for it.

There will be your belligerently drunk people showing off that they are “embracing the college lifestyle.” But there will also be people who don’t want to drink that much or at all but are still having a good time.

You get to choose which of these people you are going to be. You can choose to go one way or you can choose to go the other.

The thing is that you don’t have to commit to a certain party personality. You can go out one night and get crazy drunk, and the next night you can go out sober.

The greatest thing I learned during my fi rst year is that you don’t have to drink to have a good time. You can have a great time sober. You just have to be mentally prepared to know that you are going to face temptations.

My favorite parties to go to were apartment parties. These are smaller parties— usually invite only for the most part—that are held at an upperclassman’s apartment. The good thing about these parties is that there are usually less people, which makes it easier to get to know people.

Like I said, you don’t have to drink to have a good time, but you will be faced with the temptation. It is your choice but it is important to remember is that whatever you choose, it is always the law that you must be 21 to drink, so be careful and be safe.

I

llinois’ calendar of athletic events is quite a busy one.

The fall brings the rush of tens of thousands of fans at Memorial Stadium on Saturdays, while Huff Hall fills with a blast of volume for its volleyball matches. The winter brings the sheer excitement of a basketball game at State Farm Center and the breeze rushing through the bleachers at Illinois Field, Eichelberger Field and the Atkins Tennis Center ushers in the spring.

So if you’re preparing to sit down and watch an Illinois sporting event on TV and are hoping to see your kid in the stands, there’s a good chance he or she will be there.

Illinois students are loyal fans and attending sporting events is a fun time at the University. If you’re looking to have some family bonding on campus, attending one of these events is a sure way to feel like an Illini.

So without further ado, let’s examine the sporting events your children might attend, sorted by season.

■ Fall Football is obviously the big ticket in the

fall. Relatively speaking, it’s not actually an expensive ticket, which means it’s very accessible. Fraternity and sorority “Block” draws away a number of kids on Saturdays — ask your kids about that after their first semester — but joining Block I is still a worthwhile experience for most freshmen.

Volleyball is probably the most fun fall sport out there. The Spike Squad is famous for its volume and the team has also been more competitive than the football team in recent years.

Soccer is a fun game to go catch on the weekends as a more casual alternative to football and volleyball: it’s free.

Men’s and women’s tennis and swimming are relatively low-key sports in the fall, but if students are bored, it’s worth a trip to the ARC pool or Atkins to see these teams compete.

The golf and cross-country/track and field teams play year round, but rarely compete at home. Golf is always off-campus and tough to get to, and while cross-country and track may be fun for former runners, they don’t draw much of an audience otherwise.

■ Winter Men’s and women’s basketball are the main events of the winter, with the Orange Krush — the men’s student section — definitely serving as one of the most exciting parts of the sporting scene at Illinois.

When the State Farm Center is decked out in orange for a game, it’s a sight to behold.

Gymnastics meets are fun for former gymnasts, but I always get nervous watching them — if you’re like me and get a little scared at high flips, you might want to avoid them. Wrestling is the same way, but these teams are very competitive and some of the best in the country.

The Illini Club Hockey team is a big draw on campus, and although the games aren’t free, they provide some big-time excitement.

■ Spring Although the spring is quieter sports-wise at Illinois, the recent success of the baseball team makes that an interesting proposition for newly minted Illini fans.

Both softball and baseball offer grass to sit on along the base lines, which was a favorite spot of mine during the spring semester of my freshman year.

Tennis moves outside during the spring, and the men’s team is particularly fun to watch, given their recent success.

If you find yourself missing other sports, of course, there’s the Spring Football game, which could use more attendants, and there is the occasional spring soccer match.

Plus, after this, your kid is going to officially assume the long-awaited, but greatly hated title of “Broke College Kid.” Having that batch parent-provided provisions for a while is not only a luxury, but it’s a necessity.

3. Go out to lunch

hen I moved into the dorms freshman year, I had the most sinking feeling consuming me all day: “This is it.”

Suddenly I felt like my childhood was finished and, even though I knew it was coming all summer, I didn’t feel ready to start my college journey.

Parents: move-in day is a scary day for you. But what you might not know is it’s a scary day for your (still-and-always-willbe) kids too. So rather than rush through the day trying to avoid a lot of tears, here are some activities to do throughout the day to ease away the mutual pain.

After you leave, restaurants will be a thing of the past, so give us some good food to remember and help the local businesses before college kids deem them too expensive.

My mom didn’t do this and I haven’t talked to her since (kidding). Leaving something from home as a surprise will help your kid that first night - and what floor mate is going to say no to mom’s homemade chocolate chip cookies? Plus, it’s good comfort food to console your new student after you leave and they shed a few secret tears.

5. Impart some words of wisdom

I could say that the last thing my mom said to me was “I love you,” but it’s not. That was the second to last thing. The last thing she said was a mildly inappropriate piece of advice that made me laugh enough to forget I was being abandoned (AKA starting a new life, or whatever). Your kid might not listen, but you’ll regret any forgotten words, so get it out while you can.

6. Send an “I love you, you’ll do great,

Nightlife offers diverse options

Parents’ weekends bring options for nighttime fun for all families DECLAN HARTY Managing editor for reporting

E

ach year, thousands of parents and alumni bombard campus at certain times: Homecoming, Moms Weekend, Dads Weekend, move-in dates, football games, basketball games, the list is nearing a point where keeping track would become futile.

Each time, streets become mobbed with visitors, students procrastinate homework more than they already have and police presence on campus is escalated.But I believe, just as my parents have learned, the key to each and every visit is doing something new or exciting.

Each year, the visits grow to become formalities for many families, but by

trying something new with parents, the visits stray away from a burden to a vacation.

There are a few fundamental things in C-U, in my opinion, that each visit from family should consume of: An event of your choosing (there are more than enough) and a great meal.

The events can vary based on families’ preferences. There is always a play to see, there is always a sporting event of some sort, and feel free to reach out beyond the normal football and basketball games, with Illini Pride each sport has a great following.

And then there are the plethora of campus bars where dinner is always a plus and in turn, a night out can ensue.

Campus bars stray away from the normal bars of Chicago, what is a haven for day drinking and a great burger, campus bars normally foster a huge portion of traffic on popular weekends.

But just because the lines near the door and cover can near $10 on occasion, don’t fret, if you are looking for a place to camp out for a while with good food and drinks, bars are typically a good place.

that is your scene, head to those places.

There’s a lot to each visit and with each day of the weekend, the trip to campus can become more of a vacation.

But campus nightlife does take an interesting turn when parents are gone,

leyan University for a year, a school of just over 2,100 students. Now I attend a university that is one of the largest in the nation and in turn, the entire campus life has taken a quick turn from what I became accustomed to at IWU. The change from house parties every few weekends to bars on campus that have a drink special for every different night of the week is fascinating.

The best piece of advice, in my opinion, to tell your students is to travel in packs, but especially with people they trust and ideally, you trust. Going out on campus, especially toward the beginning and ends of each semester, is a huge hobby for most students and the streets are lined with people.

There are a few scenarios where people have been hurt, where people have been robbed and this can be seen through Illini alerts, which is a service provided by the University’s Police department. But as long as your child has a good head on their shoulders, there shouldn’t be much reason to fret.

Set expectations for securing a job MIRANDA HOLLOWAY Managing editor for online

A

lright parents and/or guardians, college is expensive and more likely than not, your child is going to need a job to help out with tuition, fees, living expenses and so on.

I get that, I pay for school essentially on my own, with the help of grants, scholarships and loans (sigh), and working as a student is what makes my college experience possible.

That being said, acknowledge your students as individuals before dogging them about their job prospects on campus.

Going to college is a culture shock for most.

Between trying to make friends, getting involved, finding their classes and learning the best way to study, there is plenty of stress on a college freshman’s plate.

If your student is taking a lighter class load and is one that can roll with the punches without much help, then pushing a job on them in their first semester

might not hurt too much.

If both of you feel comfortable with their adjustment and time management skills, then it’s never too early to start raking in the cash.

Unfortunately, not many students are like this. I thought I was. I was most definitely not.

I had been a generally independent and confident kid in high school.

I had a job for three years, was a good student in advanced and held multiple leadership positions. I knew how to do laundry, pay taxes, fill out paperwork and other adult-like things.

But being away from home, having to make new friends and adjust to a whole new level of coursework was overwhelming.

I wanted a job and knew I needed to get one, but putting it off a semester was

one of the best decisions I made in college, and my parent supported that.

I needed that first semester to get on my feet and then I was able to look for a way to make money while still staying successful in school.

Pushing students to get a job while they are trying to figure out how college works will cause more stress than those paychecks are worth.

If a stressed student starts too early, it can cost them their physical and mental health, but also their grades. If that GPA falls too low, they can kiss their scholarship goodbye. It’s basically impossible to make up that lost money on a student’s salary.

If you don’t trust your new student to eventually find a job, give them a few months before you start pushing.

Not every student is going to be statisfied working a desk reception job at an on campus building, just as not every student will do well on their feet working retail or at campus recreation.

Looking at the job board will give students a glimpse of what is availale to them when they are ready to get a job.

At the end of the day, no one knows your child and your financial situation better than you, and it’s up to you to find something that is both financially responsible and healthy for the student.

Parents’ weekends offer chance for C-U style bonding ANNABETH CARLSON Assistant features editor

L

etting your child go off to college can be a difficult adjustment. When I was a freshman, I remember my mom getting worried when I didn’t answer the phone when I was napping. I also remember feeling a bit lost without the constant and helpful advice I was used to receiving from my parents.

However, one aspect of the University that both my parents and I appreciated in this tough adjustment time was parents’ weekends.

The University hosts two parents’ weekends each year: one for dads in the fall, and another for moms in the spring. For me, I felt both of these weekends arrived just when I was beginning to feel homesick.

Some of my favorite college memories have come from spending time with my parents during these weekends. Such memories include eating burgers with my dad at Murphy’s Pub, his favorite campus bar when he was a University student, and having an impromptu sleepover in my dorm room with my mom.

Now that I’m a junior, my parents and I

are more accustomed to being away from each other while I’m at school. But as I get older, I value the memories I make with my parents on these occasions even more.

I highly recommend that everyone participate in these weekends, and feel free to bend the rules a little. If it’s Moms Weekend, dads are welcome to come, too, and vice versa. I have plenty of friends who also host grandparents, aunts and uncles, siblings and cousins as well.

If the date of the specific parents’ weekend doesn’t fit your schedule, make your own weekend celebration! Either way, here are my favorite places to go with my parents and other family members when they visit for the weekend: ■ Dining at restaurants in downtown Champaign Treat your “starving college student” to a more upscale and delicious restaurant experience than that of the dining hall.

My family’s personal favorites include the farm-to-table cuisine at Big Grove Tavern, fun twists on brunch classics at Destihl and sushi that is flambe’ed in front of you at KoFusion.

■ Shopping at the Tuscola Outlets Located just 29 minutes outside of C-U, the Tuscola Outlets offer, in my opinion, the best shopping in the area. With stores like J. Crew, Nike and Ralph Lauren, my mom

■ Attending University sporting events Sporting events are a great way to catch up and catch some school spirit at the same time! Dads Weekend always occurs on a weekend when a football game is scheduled, and it can be fun to tailgate or go to a

campus bar beforehand.

Be sure to look into the other sports the University has to offer as well. Recently, my dad and I enjoyed a tennis match at the Atkins Tennis Center.

Paying for Greek life: A worthwhile investment MIRANDA HOLLOWAY Managing editor for online

T

he common argument against joining Greek life is that it’s just paying for friends. In some ways that’s true, but writing off Greek life in this way discounts all the opportunities that go along with membership.

For the sake of transparency, I should say that I pay for Greek life, along with school, on my own.

It’s not easy, and has lead to some high-stress phone calls with my parents, but I make it work because I find it to be a valuable investment in both my college experience and my future.

In a way, I pay for my friends. I do this in the sense that I pay for my sorority and I happen to be friends with the girls in my sorority, but there is far more than the friendships that make the cost of Greek life worthwhile.

I pay my bill every month because it means I am part of something big-

ger than myself, something that provides academic, social and philanthropic opportunities while I am in school and that provides a network of support after I graduate.

At such a big university, it was important for my own sense of belonging to be part of a community. Greek life has provided a community where I gain leadership roles, interact with people I would have otherwise never met and be active in philanthropic activities I would not have access to as an unaffiliated student.

Greek life at the University is big, but the community is small, which provides for connections and a support system that gives students a greater chance for success.

As an academic advantage, many chapters have study files where students can see notes and quizzes from older members.

Membership also gives younger students more access to older students in their majors who can recommend classes and give tips on extra-curriculars, graduate school admissions and more.

Attending a large university like this, it’s important for students to find a

niche so they don’t find themselves floating around without a sense of direction.

Greek life is a niche where students can peruse their strengths and test out new interests.

If a student has always been interested in volunteering, they can work on their chapter’s philanthropy team. If they’re looking to go into business, they can be a treasurer.

The list goes on and on, but the big picture is that while they are making friends in the Greek system, undergraduates can make connections and take chances that will benefit them academically, personally and professionally.

The buzz word of my argument so far is ‘connections.’ It’s not going anywhere.

I’m only going to be junior, but I have already been able to reach out to many of my organization’s alumni who are in my field to ask questions and do some early networking.

I have gone to interviews where my Greek affiliation has been brought up and the interviewer had a personal, positive connection to someone in that organization.

And remember those friends you were

paying for earlier? They don’t disappear after graduates walk across the stage.

Alumni chapters around the country provide graduates with connections no matter where the wind blows them in their future, whether they were part of a local chapter or not.

I understand the hesitation many parents have about their child joining Greek life.

There is some truth to the partyfilled atmosphere and there are bad seeds within the community. The truth is, there are these influences in people everywhere on campus, not just in Greek life.

So, when you feel like all you’re paying for is for your son or daughter to stay up until all hours of the night with their new pledge class, know that they, along with these people, are a part of a community that will give them support and opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise have.

Finding the best textbook option

at Sixth & Chalmers

We

had it easy in high school. A teacher would pass around those heavy textbooks. You’d write your name on the inside cover. That was that.

But in college, we have a hefty price on our plates: textbooks. There are, however, options to make paying for textbooks easy.

I’m no pro, but I’ve had my fair share of renting, buying and selling books. Ultimately, you’re left with a hole in your pocket and a heavier backpack.

Buying at the bookstore There are two bookstores on campus to go to. The first is owned by the University, the Illini Union Bookstore. There is also T.I.S. Bookstore, which stands for The Illinois Store. T.I.S. often has cheaper options.

I always compare the two before I start my journey as a base-point. If I can find cheaper options online, I go for it. But also, take the convenience option of being able to get it on campus.

It’s best to buy textbooks after attending your first class because sometimes the professor gives tips on whether you need a specific type of book or where you can find the cheapest.

Ordering online There are several stores, such as Chegg or Half.com, where you can look up your textbook online and find the best price. Even searching on Amazon can provide cheaper options than buying instore. However, with this comes shipping costs, and it can stall starting homework if you’re waiting for the book to come in. This can also be hard because you can’t see the book in advance to see its condition before agreeing to buy or rent it.

Renting vs. buying The lessened price of renting a book versus buying it always makes me (and my wallet) feel better. However, sometimes buying the book only costs a small fraction more.

In this case, it’s better to just buy the book and see if you can sell it back rather than keep something temporarily. I typically rent books not in my major and buy books in my major (I hope that someday I’ll want to go back and read them for novel pieces of advice). A lot of the online stores mentioned above offer rental prices.

Ultimately, it comes down to the time crunch and how much you really see yourself using the books. I do a combination of all three methods in order to maximize the most and save money.

Preparing a child for a party school in 3 steps Every type of student needs to be informed before starting school

can only imagine how nerve-wracking it must be to send your child off to college, setting them loose into the world.

And I imagine that sending them to one of Princeton Review’s top party schools probably doesn’t help. Even if your child doesn’t drink and has not expressed any interest in starting, he or she will no doubt be introduced to the drinking culture on campus. No matter what your child’s social intentions are come fall, make sure to have these three conversations with them before move-in to prepare them for a fun, yet safe stay at one of the nation’s top party schools.

Even though everyone is desperate to make friends the first few weeks of school, it’s important to walk away from people who don’t respect your choices.

■ Pacing is important Regardless if your child enjoyed the occasional clandestine beverage in high school or plans on staying sober, it’s important they know how to pace themselves and how their body might react to alcohol.

Even if your child has drank before, the quantity and variety of alcohol available in college can’t compare to any high school party. It’s easy for young students to feel like they have to prove themselves or look tough by going shot for shot with those around them, but this often doesn’t end well.

As simple as it sounds, make sure your student knows that just because someone offers them a drink doesn’t mean they have to take it. If they know that

they have reached their limit, it’s easy to politely decline. One fun trick I’ve learned is just to hold a cup for hours on end, and if someone offers a shot, do the cartoonish pour-it-behind-you-when-no-one’s-looking.

Most importantly, make sure that your freshman knows if they’re hanging out with people who do not respect their limits or choices when it comes to alcohol, they’re probably not the friends they should be friends with for the next four years. Even though everyone is desperate to make friends the fi rst few weeks of school, it’s important to walk away from people who don’t respect your choices.

■ When things get dangerous The University provides some great education for fi rst year students about the dangers of alcohol with its ACE IT program, but these classes come in the fi rst few weeks of school. It can’t hurt to talk to your student about the signs of alcohol poisoning and how to help a friend that has had a little too much to drink.

With your and the University’s help, your freshman should be able to list off the symptoms of alcohol poisoning like a pro by the time welcome week rolls around. Shaking, vomiting, slow or irregular breathing and hypothermia are all simple signs that should trigger your child into thinking something is wrong.

Freshmen should know to make sure their dangerously drunk friends are on their sides and not be afraid to call an ambulance if they are even a little worried about the situation.

Students are often afraid to call 911 because they fear that their friend will be angry with them, or they could get in trouble for drinking, too. To this, tell them it’s better to have an angry acquaintance than a dead friend. C-U area laws also protect underage drinkers who are trying to help someone in need.

■ The consequences Despite the legal age to enter bars being 19 and the school’s reputation as a party school, police and University officials don’t joke around when it comes to underage drinking. If under 21, students can not have alcohol in dorm rooms and risk having incident reports written up if they’re caught drinking or at a party in a residence hall room .

Underage drinking can be costly, too.

Getting caught underage drinking in Champaign comes with a nice, hefty minimum $330 ticket. Unlawful use of ID carries the same fi ne but could possible result in license suspension.

CUMTD buses: your first stop to success JOEY GELMAN Assistant sports editor for on-air

he CUMTD bus system: Your first new friend on campus.

While it may not look like it now, the winter is a true and harsh reality come December in Urbana- Champaign. When you are finished cramming for that final exam you should have started studying for last week, you begin the long trek home through the blistering cold from the library only to realize you could have avoided the freezing temperatures. Your friends at Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District are here to help.

CUMTD is the bus service in and around campus and the greater Champaign-Urbana area that can serve as a lifesaver for student travel.

The University is a very walkable campus but just like all of us have experienced, you are going to have one of those mornings where the snooze button was hit one too many times, and what seemed to be a reasonable 9 a.m. class is now starting in 10 minutes. The CUMTD system is a very efficient system and can get you to that one really far away building that nobody warned you about for your first freshman class.

■ FREE and of course, there’s an APP for that.

The first question I would have would be “how much does this service cost?” Luckily for you, the service is free with proof of an I-CARD. Simply show the bus driver your student ID and you will be on your way.

Also, at every stop there are update boards with the most current timetable for when the next bus will be arriving to that spot.

However, some days, you want to look at the schedule before you step out into the dog days of January. By downloading the CU Buses application to your smartphone, you can get a minute-by-minute update on when the next bus is approaching to your desired location. You can even make a game of it and race your friends to the stop, as the app counts down the minutes you have to make the bus. And if you do not have a smartphone, don’t worry; the timetables are always available at the stop itself or at cumtd.com.

■ I’m feeling 22 The 22 Illini North and South buses are the heartbeat of campus. Whether you are a freshman and need to be picked up at Ikenberry Commons or PAR, or a senior living in ONE apartments on Lincoln Avenue in Urbana, the 22 has you covered. Coming to each stop almost every 10 minutes, the buses will get you to where you need to go. The 22 follows a route that can take you from your dorm to the engineering quad, as well

as all the way to Goodwin avenue, where you will find the computer science buildings, The Krannert Center for Performing Art, Richmond TV Studios and more; with the main quad and other academic buildings in between.

■ #1 in mom’s book If you are worried about trying to find a way to get to the train station or bus stop to get home for a weekend or break, you don’t have to bother a friend to drive you to the station. The 1 Yellow North and South will get you to that station and back to campus in 10 minutes, so you can say those last-minute goodbyes, or get out of a sticky roommate situation in a flash. The 1 Yellow also goes through the heart of campus, and can be used to get to and from class like the 22, depending on where your classes are.

■ Transit Plaza Transit Plaza on Wright Street is the bus hub for all of campus and the C-U area. A 5-10 minute walk from Green Street, and just outside Lincoln Hall on the main quad, this bus stop is home to nearly every bus available, and can get you anywhere you need to go. With a Starbucks in the Illini Union Bookstore across the street, you can simply pop in, grab a coffee, and take a bus to wherever your heart desires. Transit Plaza is just one of many conveniently-located bus stops throughout campus. The variety

in location pick-ups allows the bus system to run effectively and it can serve almost the entire student population, no matter where they are living.

■ Safety First While the buses run until the early hours of the morning, there are some scenarios, where a certain line may not be running, or you have ended your night nowhere near a bus stop. That’s where Safe Rides comes in. Safe Rides is a limited service through CUMTD that can be called to pick up students starting from 5 p.m. or 7 p.m., depending on the season, until 6 a.m. to ensure a safe ride home. Why risk the walk back alone when you can simply call Safe Rides and ensure your safety in the early hours of the morning.

■ Hop on!

The CUMTD bus system on campus is extremely useful and important for students to familiarize themselves with, as it will make navigating campus for a first-year student much easier. While we all want to walk and de-bunk the myth of the freshman 15, there are some days where we need a little help in the morning to get to class, and CUMTD always has your back.

Five necessities to help you survive your first year on campus without any hiccups ABIGAILE SVOBODA News editor

B

efore I left for school my freshman year, I was insistent I was forgetting something. My mom and I had already spent countless hours at Target and The Container Store that summer, but as a nervous oldest-child freshman it seemed impossible I was actually prepared for college.

“Abby, it’s not like we can’t pick stuff up when we get there,” my mom said.

“I’m going to be in the middle of corn fields!” I hysterically replied.

As an inhabitant of the west Chicago suburbs, I had apparently been groomed to believe Target was ours. I quickly learned Target is just as popular in Champaign (I love the location on Prospect Avenue) and care packages are glorious thing.

But, just in case, here are five must-have items that will make your first year on campus just a little bit easier.

A water bottle

A $20 reusable water bottle might be the best purchase you make at the start of your college career. It might sound obvious, but my freshman year roommate bought about 500 cases of plastic water bottles throughout the year. Toss your reusable bottle in your backpack before you head to class so you can save your cash for Chipotle and cover.

Cash Speaking of cover, you’re going to need some cash. Yes, real, paper money. My mom warned me to always have cash with me, but I thought I knew better.

Alas, college has proven mom truly does know best. There’s nothing worse than spending the $2.50 you were going to spend on pizza at Second Story on a surcharge at the closest ATM. Whether you’re paying cover or buying breakfast at Pandamonium (best cash-only donuts ever), your debit card might not always be the trusty sidekick it should be.

Rumor has it using cash makes students more conscious of their spending, too. Tip:

there are surcharge-free ATMs in the Illini Union Bookstore and the Illini Union that you can use with practically any bank account.

A bike and a sturdy lock During my freshman year, I was issued one bike ticket and had two bikes stolen. After a series of trial and error, I’ve learned to follow the rules of the road and use a U-lock.

Despite being asked if I still have a bike every time I go to any family party, I swear by the classic mode of transportation.

Bikes are the easiest way to get around our big campus, especially when you’re crunched for time. Just don’t ride in the winter (unless you’re really brave), be sure to use the bike lanes when you can and watch out for pedestrians.

A warm coat Splurge on the knee-length, down coat.

Trust me. I used to call these “mom coats,” but now I’m sorry I ever referred to mine as anything other than “best friend.”

This will be your go-to from the months

of November to — sadly— early March.

You’ll still need other winter essentials to match, like gloves, a scarf and a hat, but the warm coat is definitely central to keeping out the cold when walking to class.

Snow boots Hopefully you’ll learn a lot during your first semester. You’ll also definitely learn that not everyone shovels their sidewalks as well as your dad does.

To combat feeling like you’re climbing through the Arctic on the way to Econ 102, you’ll need a good pair of snow boots. Any pair with a rubber sole and toe (I love my Sorels) will help you get to and from class, the library or wherever you else you might venture (I’m not afraid to admit I’ve even been seen in my trusty boots at KAM’S a few times during my past two winters on campus).

Avoiding classic freshman moves Follow these simple tips to avoid clueless label NATALIE GACEK Assistant design editor

s a freshman, you’re so ready to tackle college life.

But as the newest underclassmen of campus, you can stick out so obviously when you don’t know the ins and outs of university life.

Here are some tips on how to avoid the typical, face-palming freshman moves and become an upper-classmen-approved firstyear student.

Stay out of the bike lane Bikers don’t stop. They’re on a mission to get to class quickly and don’t pump the

breaks for oblivious pedestrians stepping into their territory.

Stop texting, stop blasting music into your ears and look both ways to cross safely and avoid getting taken out by a kid on two wheels.

Don’t run for a bus Don’t be that kid who sprints down Wright Street to catch a bus to your dorm.

Take it easy – there will be another one in 10 minutes. The 22-South waits for no one and the doors might sadly even just shut on you.

Running for a bus is a sign of freshman desperation. No need to become someone’s Snapchat story for the day.

Don’t forget about your laundry It’s a feat to haul weeks worth of laundry down to the basement of a dorm, so congrats on doing it in the first place.

But remember that you’ve claimed a machine now so stay committed to your laundering adventure.

Everyone needs to wash clothes, so set a reminder on your phone to take yours out promptly when time’s up.

Or else it will end up thrown in a wet and wrinkly pile on a dirty counter, or you may

Know your limit Be careful when drinking and know when to cut yourself off. Not only can an overlyintoxicated kid be annoying to others trying to have a good time, but it can also be unsafe.

It’s not a good idea to rip tons of shots when you don’t know your limit yet, so be conscious of your intake.

Trust me, you don’t want to be that fresh-

Don’t live in your high school mindset It may have been the best four years of your life, or it may have been the worst. Either way, high school is over.

You’re on a new campus and have the chance to start fresh and make your college experience memorable and successful.

Join a club. Make new friends. Go out of your comfort zone.

College provides you with a wide range of opportunities and it’s up to you to make the most out of it.

Take all the knowledge you’ve gained in high school and apply it to your journey now.

Move forward.

So, don’t be the kind of freshman who makes such blatant freshman moves. You can do better than that.

By following these simple guidelines, you can be the most successful freshman out there.

aying for college does not come easily to most – whether it be as a student or a parent. However, there are many ways to keep college cheap. Below are some helpful hints and guidelines to minimize your (and your parents’) spending.

■ Research before renting or buying books Apart from basic living needs and tuition, textbooks are a huge cost to factor into the college experience. Although they may seem extremely important, everyone has had that class that never touches a $200 textbook. So before running to the bookstore with a long list of overpriced books, find out more about the classes first.

Ask other students who have taken the class or even the professor if the books truly are necessary, and how much they will be used. If the response is anywhere close to “hardly ever,” then consider using the library’s copy of the book for those rare study days. If you do need the book frequently for class, look online or consider renting, because often there are much cheaper options. Finding lower-priced textbooks can be a huge money saver.

■ Don’t overload your courses This may seem strange, but taking a realistic course load can really lessen the price of college. Overloading can lead to failing, which can then lead to having to retake a course. For the fall semester of 2015, tuition for 12 or more credit hours runs from $6,018 for an Illinois resident and $14,013 for an international student. It may seem worthwhile to cram the maximum amount of hours into one semester’s worth of tuition, but you might just be setting yourself back. Failing a class, or multiple classes, can mean paying for an extra semester or spending a couple thousand more on a summer school course.

■ Use public transportation Having a car at school might seem like a great way to get around, but it’s costly. A typical parking permit for the school year can be anywhere from $300 to $600. And on top of that, you have to pay for gas and any necessary repairs made to your vehicle as a result of damage suffered while parked on campus.

The bus system on campus is great, and can take you just about anywhere. It runs late and is reliable and efficient. And the best part about the bus system - it’s free for students! So don’t hesitate to learn the bus schedule on campus, because it’s a much cheaper alternative to maintaining your own

■ Be smart when furnishing your apartment or dorm It’s typical to walk into Target when your student is about to head off to college for the first time, or they are getting ready to furnish their first apartment and think they need everything. They don’t. Students tend to overbuy furnishings and supplies thinking they will need every type of storage container and kitchen utensil in the store.

They may be leaving the comforts of home, but they are not leaving society.

There are stores all around that can supply them with everything they need, from futons to can openers. Buy them the necessities, and when they get to school, they will slowly think of things they need or things they forgot. Also, you may be forgetting about roommates. Be sure to communicate with roommates so no one double-buys.

■ Keep a budget It’s important to keep in mind that your student will be on their own someday and they need to learn how to budget. Make sure they keep tabs on what they spend money on. Even though you probably don’t want to know that they spent $5 to get into a bar last Saturday, $15 on drinks, and then $10 more on drunk food, it’s important to know that at least they didn’t spend $50 on drinks.

If you plan on helping your student out with money, make sure you stick to a monthly allowance. Give them a certain amount each month and don’t give them any more.

Otherwise, they will call you each week asking you to put money in their bank account, and you will lose track. Also, they can learn how to manage that specific amount of money you give them and you both will end up saving.

Most importantly, communicating with your student about what you will spend money on in college is important. College is a huge step, and for most people, money is a huge stressor on top of everything else. Saving every little bit counts and it will definitely add up.

Cracked food truck If you want a quick late-night snack, look no further than the Cracked truck, located right outside of Joe’s Brewery.

If you enjoy Cracked’s breakfast delicacies during the day, just imagine having them at night.

The truck sells sandwiches and sides.

There are plenty of menu options, whether you’re starving or just looking for some crispy tots. There are also sweet tots, loaded tots and even tots topped with Cracked’s signature Sriracha sour cream.

Fat Sandwich Company Fat Sandwich Company is the place to go if you’re looking for a greasy glory.

Their sandwiches are loaded with fries, mozzarella sticks, mac-n-cheese bites and almost any fast food item you can think of.

One suggestion: if you want to successfully eat a Fat Sandwich, then you better eat some of the fries fi rst, or else it will fall apart in your hands. You don’t want that, especially after the long night you’ve had!

Burrito King If you’re looking for good Mexican food, then Burrito King is the place to be. You’re always guaranteed a side of chips and salsa to go along with your meal.

There are plenty of menu options ranging from a full dinner of enchiladas to just a shrimp taco.

S

ituated on the Main Quad, the Undergraduate Library - known as the UGL - is a trove of nonsensical works of literature, students internalizing stress and the occasional therapy dog. It is a zoo with no plexiglass — where students are all animals carving out pockets of space to study; marking one’s territory by spreading out book bags across multiple chairs.

It boasts a massive array of Indian comic books, bagel crumbs from Espresso Royale and an eerie silence unique to the bottom echelons of the UGL. Despite an unsolicited guest appearance from a fugitive, the library is more than just late-night housing for students during finals week: It is home to hundreds, if not thousands, of rentable digital equipment.

This may not seem like a substantial and immediate value. However, as a student in the College of Media, its value is

undeniable.

Having access to equipment that is otherwise too expensive to obtain individually creates opportunities for students to increase production value of their assignments and pursue personal projects through digital mediums.

As more teachers put emphasis on working in groups and presenting, it is guaranteed that you will be carrying the team quite often.

In these unfortunate and relatively frequent scenarios, you can count on the library as a second home and helper.

With DSLR cameras (and their corresponding interchangeable lenses), camcorders and audio kits, you can at least make it seem like it wasn’t done last minute. At the very least, you can ensure that your project won’t be a case study on the limitations of an iPhone camera.

However, as with anything, procrastination stymies progress and shipwrecks dreams.

When finals week comes lurching about, you can bet that all the equipment will be checked out, conference tables reserved, and audio and video recording rooms in use.

The key to making use of this resource is dependent on your own proactivity.

Enough with the sandwiches options though. It’s time for a tasty dessert.

On campus, there are two popular spots that happen to be frozen yogurt joints: Cocomero and Orange Leaf.

Before I dive in on this one, I would like to say that the only type of frozen yogurt is the original tart. Anything else is simply healthy ice cream.

Well, there you have it, I guess. Go to Cocomero — their tart is the best. It’s so sour, you might even make a funny face after ever scoop you eat.

Unfortunately, I don’t have the space to really dive into all the other solid cuisine options.

I will, however, mention a few more joints where you can stop by and get a decent bite of food. If you’re hungry one morning, see a “Cracked” food truck and have a couple dollars, stop and get something. Anything.

If you want something you’ll most likely be familiar with, there is a Panda Express, Potbelly’s and Einstein Bagels.

Choosing the major that suits you DECLAN HARTY Managing editor for reporting

F

or the last twelve grades, you’ve been able to dabble in everything.

You and your peers have become connoisseurs of english, math, the sciences, social studies and probably a foreign language by now.

But as you approach your move-in date to the University, the question of “what are you going to major in?” continues to haunt you at every graduation party and family event.

As an 18-year-old soon-to-be college freshman, the pressure is insurmountable. For most incoming freshman, you’ve barely been away from home, and now, most people expect you to know what you want to do with your life — I mean, really?

There are some people who know exactly what they want to do, maybe it was a physics class in high school that inspired them, maybe it was a life long dream to be a teacher, but odds are for the most of us, the decision for a major

is one that hasn’t even crossed our minds until high school graduation night.

For me, I always thought I wanted to be a teacher. I still do.

But I’m not an education major, nor a history, or English, or mathematics, or biology major.

I’m a journalism major because writing is what I love.

That’s what I chose to do, was pick a major that I wanted to do, one that would not only allow me to be successful because I love my line of work, but one that will also allow me to explore other fields.

For most college students, there is at least one moment (for most, there are more than just one — I have had three and most likely will have one more), when you question your choice of major.

My biggest piece of advice: If you will be happy with that field and what you hope to do with that degree, choose it and stick to it.

I don’t mean to be too philosophical, but something that I have learned during my time in college is that to be happy with a profession means so many different things.

Maybe it is the paycheck at the end of every two weeks that means you can take your family on vacation, maybe it is long hours to keep yourself occupied because you love your workplace, maybe it is the short hours because you love being with your families.

There is so much to factor in when it comes to picking your major, but what it comes down to is what you think is best.

There is no rush right now.

Take your time, and even if you are decided on a major, take classes in other fields that interest you, talk to professors about what makes them passionate about their fields, explore the opportunities on campus related to certain fields, whether that is a academic or professional fraternity, a registered student organization or just a panel discussion.

Take in as much as possible during the next four years because it is well worth it.

My

first year at the University, I had a different random roommate each semester.

While my experience with each of them was very different, both of them did teach me a very important lesson.

The key to keeping your sanity when you’re rooming with a near-stranger is having a balance between time together and time alone, which can be achieved with open and honest communication.

A month or so before school started, I received an email from my dorm, letting

me know who was assigned to stay with me in the double room I’d signed up for.

My first roommate and I got to know each other through email, discovering shared interests.

I was optimistic, despite the skepticism I received when I told people I was going with a randomly assigned roommate.

After the first couple weeks, I never saw my first roommate in the room at all.

This wouldn’t have been too bad except for the fact that she would often come in at odd times with her boyfriend to grab some clothes and shower or to nap in the middle of the day. While it was nice to have the room to myself for a lot of the semester, it was also kind of nerve-wracking.

Communication had broken down between us, and that made it difficult to live in the same space, and she moved out at the end of the semester without telling me.

While you don’t need to keep tabs on your roommate’s every move, it’s helpful to know when they’re coming and going if you want to take a nap uninterrupted or study in your room.

We talked more than I had with my other roommate and we actually did things together, like getting dinner or going to the mall.

The only downside to this was that she rarely left the room. It wouldn’t have been too bad, but I’d become accustomed

to a certain lifestyle — one of privacy.

Near finals, this ended up creating an extremely stressful environment, with our tendencies getting on each other’s nerves.

Communication, as well as honesty, is also imperative when there are problems.

According to the University’s Student Legal Services, roommates should be willing to share their feelings honestly, as well as compromise to resolve conflicts.

If this doesn’t seem to work, or the problem is getting worse, students should talk to their resident adviser.

If it seems like things aren’t working out at all, it’s always an option to ask for a room change.

While many people get along with their randomly assigned roommates just fine, it’s important to learn how to deal maturely and properly with ones who may get under your skin.

It’s all a matter of talking openly and honestly to maintain a sense of balance.

Using laptops in lieu of notebooks

They can wait until later to completely understand and delve into their subjects.

But many students do not complete this later step and never truly grasp the material. Another problem is that many students enter a mindless state while taking notes verbatim.

n the digital age, longhand notes have been replaced in favor of notes taken on a laptop. Ten years ago, this would not have been possible, but laptops have slimmed down, making them easy to transport in a backpack. They have opened up new areas where students can more easily become involved.

Collaboration with peers on papers and projects is one example. It is also easier to access the enormous amount of information available on the internet, and have made it so that the student can take more notes in a shorter amount of time allowing for verbatim notes. A student can type faster than they can write which is one appeal to taking notes on the laptop. In theory, these reasons enhance the students’ learning abilities.

However, there are problems with this model of note-taking.

At (students’) fingertips is an enormous amount of entertainment that has nothing to do with the class they are taking.

This is in comparison to taking longhand notes where students are forced to summarize the information presented to them because the slow nature of the longhand form does not allow for verbatim notes.

Through the process of summarization, the students must digest and understand the material which then leads to a longer retention and deeper understanding of the information.

Another issue of taking notes on the laptop is access to the internet. Most of the information that students are learning can be found on the internet. This makes it seem that during lectures, note taking is not as important because the information can be found later. But students do not follow through and miss out on valuable information.

The internet also increases the chance of distraction for a student. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other social media sites are becoming increasingly important in our society. Users are becoming more and more interested in being involved in these sites constantly. Unfortunately, these serve as

distractions during lectures.

Students in class are always clicking and typing away on their laptops. The teacher is lecturing in front of the class. But many students may not actually be paying any attention to the lecture. At their fingertips is an enormous amount of entertainment that has nothing to do with the class they are taking.

There is always a student checking the latest tweet on Twitter or taking the newest Buzzfeed quiz rather than taking notes in class.
