Moms Weekend: Explore beyond the campus limits HANEYAH KHAWAJA Staff writer
M
oms Weekend has been a tradition at the University of Illinois for many years. It is a great opportunity to share a piece of your college experience with your mother through different activities planned over the weekend. Most students tend to show their moms around common UIUC places, such as the Alma Mater, Green Street, and the Quad. However, not many people explore the Champaign-Urbana area surrounding our campus. There are many places and activities to go to that students miss out on because they do not explore these surrounding areas. Moms Weekend is the perfect time to do some exploring with your friends and their moms, so here’s a potential schedule for you to consider. Start off your weekend with breakfast at The Original Pancake House (OHOP). OHOP is a crucial part of the ChampaignUrbana experience. They serve every breakfast item you can think of, including pancakes, omelets and waffles with
a variety of toppings. OHOP can satisfy anyone’s breakfast cravings. From there, take your mom to downtown Champaign. There are many cute and interesting stores to see. This weekend is also the beginning of the Boneyard Arts Festival. The festival is a unique experience because it is a four-day, county-wide celebration that takes place in hundreds of venues. The festival showcases local weavers, painters, sculptors and photographers. There are also performances from entertainers of all types. The best part about the festival is it is free! After strolling around Champaign, head to one of the many great restaurants that downtown Champaign has to offer. Big Grove Tavern is a great option for typical American food, whereas KoFusion would be a good choice if you are in the mood for some sushi. Because there are many different types of cuisine in the area, it possible to please everyone. End the night by taking a walk through Bardeen Engineering Quad. Many might find this activity a bit odd, but once the sun sets and the stars come out, sitting on the quad and stargazing is one of the best sights to see. The next morning, head to Merry-Ann’s Diner for breakfast. The Merry-Ann’s
located on the Urbana side of campus is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and serves traditional breakfast items that are loaded with all the flavor you could hope for. After Merry Ann’s, head to the Japanese Gardens here on campus. On Saturday, the Japanese Gardens are hosting their Spring Open House, which consists of garden tours, a chokes dolls presentation and a tea time ceremony, all for only $5. The events go on until 2 p.m, perfect for grabbing a quick bite at Black Dog. Black Dog Smoke and Ale house has two locations in either Champaign or Urbana. They are known for their traditional barbecue style food and they’re vast array of sauces. This place is by far the most famous authentic barbecue restaurant here in town. They even have vegetarian options for those who want the taste of barbecue, but have dietary limitations. After eating, take a little breather, head to Game Day to buy your mom some Illini gear to set her up for the next time she comes to visit. On Sunday, head to Green Street, which has many different local and chain restaurants, ranging from Asian, Indian and Arabic food to pizza and wings . After eating, walk to Alma to get the famous Illi-

Moms Weekend: An opportunity to get your mom more involved in your Illini life BROOKS BERISH Assistant supplements editor
M
oms Weekend is more than just an excuse to hang out with your mom all weekend; it’s an opportunity to show our Illini moms the school that we have all gotten to know so well. When I call my parents, I give them a run-down of my most recent notable activities, but I have realized that describing it to them over the phone is nothing like showing them in person. This is why I will be using Moms Weekend to show my mom first-hand what I have been up to. This not only allows me to brag about my achievements, but it also administers a sense of reality that would not have otherwise been instilled with a distant weekly phone call. Even when my parents do come and visit, we tend to resume the same gen-
eral schedule. I show them around campus and we then go and get something to eat. Walking the family up and down the quad might be great way to show off the beautiful campus, but it doesn’t really do much else besides maybe giving them an idea of what it is like to walk to class every day. There are numerous events and activities scheduled for the weekend that go beyond just showing off the aesthetics and architecture of our campus, and instead give our mothers a sense of cohesion that we students are able to experience here on campus. I’m not saying that you should take your mom out to bars (that’s your responsibility), just get her involved a little more. The Moms Association coordinates the main events happening on Moms
Weekend. Along with several fun activities, they have a brunch and an awards ceremony. If those mainstream events do not interest you, there are other organizations to branch out to as well. For example, if you are involved in Greek life here on campus, it is possible that they may have something organized for the moms when they come down. My fraternity, Kappa Delta Rho, has been hosting Moms Weekend events exclusively for the fraternity brothers and their mothers for many years. The fact that I joined a fraternity may have shown my parents that I was getting more involved at school, but they really didn’t understand what that represented to me. However, the Greek Life system is just one niche of our campus community, so it is important to expand your horizons and find what interests you. One does not just have to depend on the pre-organized events to keep their mom busy. Green Street will probably be bustling with people on Friday and Saturday, and getting a table at a local restaurant or a bar during its height hours would be a great way to show your mom the eclectic night life that the University has to offer. If your mom is coming down to spend some time with her dearly beloved over Moms Weekend, then take advantage of the special events going on or get her involved around campus not only to avoid boredom, but also to engage her in the thorough Illini education taught beyond the walls of our lecture halls.

Alternative restaurants to the brunch route BY MARIAH SCHAEFER STAFF WRITER
Finding a restaurant to go to during Moms Weekend can be a difficult challenge if your mom cannot make up her mind about what she’s craving. Providing your mom with the perfect meal during her visit is a nice gesture you should not spoil. If she is certain she is not in the mood for brunch, consider these four alternative restaurants, which my mom approved.

Biaggi’s is my family’s go-to restaurant when we cannot decide where to eat. Italian food is always a good idea, and Biaggi’s serves many Italian dish options, from Chicken Parmesan and Potato-Parmesan Crusted Tilapia to Margherita Pizza and Farfalle Alfredo. The family-friendly restaurant also serves fantastic bread and guarantees service that will keep your mom happy. Located on Neil Street just off campus, the restaurant is an affordable place to take your mom for either lunch or dinner this Moms Weekend.
Every time my family eats at Timpone’s, my mother leaves the restaurant a happy customer. Conveniently located on Goodwin Avenue next to Canopy Club, the restaurant serves both lunch and dinner during the week. On Saturdays, Timpone’s is open from 5 to 10 p.m. Just make sure you do not plan to take your mom to Timpone’s on Sunday because the restaurant will be closed. Timpone’s specialty is fine Italian food. Some of the dishes served include pizza, pasta and risotto. My mom especially recommends Timpone’s risotto.
When I asked my mom what other restaurants she liked when she did not want Italian food, she said she enjoyed eating at KoFusion’s downtown location on Main Street. The restaurant also has a campus location, which is near the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, on Oregon Street. KoFusion serves a variety of dishes, including dollar sushi and lamb chops. The downtown location seems to be more formal than the campus location because customers are able to sit down at a table and order from a menu. At the campus location, customers order at the counter, and the service was fast the last time I went there.
If your mom likes to eat meat, then Black Dog sounds like the ideal place to take her. Like KoFusion, the restaurant has two locations: one on Chestnut Street in Champaign and one on Broadway Avenue in Urbana. Black Dog serves sandwiches, burgers, salads and different types of meat accompanied by side items. If your mom is not in the mood to eat meat, the restaurant also serves smoked portabella mushroom. Last time my family ate there and asked for a dessert menu, our server said they did not have one. Therefore, if your mom wants to eat something sweet after the meal, your family might have to go somewhere else.

Avoiding the restaurant crowds on Moms Weekend does not mean sacrificing the quality or flavor of your dinner with mom. With only three steps needed to complete each recipe, cooking a fancy dinner at home is manageable for every college student. The meal starts with an appetizer of a balsamic bruschetta, has a main entree of salmon with a creamy pesto sauce and a side of brussels sprouts and finishes with a light and flaky Nutella croissant.

Easy Balsamic Bruschetta
Salmon with Pesto Sauce
Cranberry Almond Brussels Sprouts
4 Roma tomatoes 2 cloves garlic 2 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese 1/4 cup chopped basil leaves Baguette, sliced
2 salmon fillets 1 tablespoon olive oil Salt and pepper 1/4 cup milk 4 ounce cream cheese 1/2 cup pesto sauce
1 pound brussels sprouts 1 cup dried cranberries Salt and pepper 1/2 cup slivered almonds 2 tablespoon honey

Chop tomatoes, garlic and basil leaves. Mix in a bowl and add parmesan cheese, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Lightly brush baguette slices and toast in the oven until edges are brown. Serve bruschetta mixture on the baguette slices.

Sprinkle salt and pepper on salmon fillets. Heat olive oil in a skillet and add salmon. Cook for approximately four minutes on each side, or until the salmon is golden brown and feels firm to the touch. Melt the cream cheese in a pan with the milk. Add pesto sauce. Take pesto sauce off the heat and drizzle over salmon fillets.
Place brussels sprouts in a jelly roll pan, sprinkle with salt and pepper and roast in the oven at 400° for 20 to 25 minutes. Mix cranberries, almonds and honey in a small bowl. Take the brussels sprouts out of the oven and stir in cranberry mixtures before serving.

Nutella Croissants Adapted from Gimme Some Oven 1 package puff pastry 1 egg 1 cup Nutella 1 tablespoon water Cut sheet of puff pastry into thirds. Roll the rectangular strip of puff pastry out until the dough is 1/4 inch thick. Cut the rectangle into two triangles. Drop a small scoop of Nutella at the wide end of the triangle. Spread down the length of the triangle, leaving 1/2 inch border from the edge so that it does not leak out in the oven. Roll up the croissant, starting at the wide edge of the triangle. Repeat with remaining dough. Beat egg and water to create an egg wash. Brush egg wash over the croissants and bake at 350° for 25 minutes.

Moms Association plays integral part in organizing Moms Weekend BY RABIA ILYAS STAFF WRITER
Moms Weekend is fast approaching, and the day lets students appreciate all the motherly figures in their lives before the busy end of the semester. The Moms Association is to thank for much of the fun atmosphere on campus because of their role in planning the major events each year. The Moms Association takes part in planning three of the major highlights of Moms Weekend each year: the annual meeting, the Illini Union Arts and Craft Fair and the Moms Weekend Sunday Brunch. “The craft fair and brunch are especially popular with moms, and these events have high turnout rates,” said Timbolin Holmes, current president of the Moms Association. While the Moms Association does not manage the Craft Fair, they have a booth set up at the Union where
moms can shop for various handcrafted items. “The annual brunch, held on Sunday, April 10, is also very exciting and popular among parents. Tickets can be bought through Shopify on the Moms Association website, but also at the event, itself,” Holmes said. Holmes said that many moms buy their tickets at the event, and she enjoys seeing how excited they are to be coming with their family. “The events take a lot of planning and hard work, but when I see excited parents, it all pays off,” she said. Holmes has been a member for three years and said that she joined the organization to stay close with her daughter. “I saw my daughter off to preschool and then college and did not want that to end, which made me join the Moms Association,” she said. Succulents are usually the most popular types of plant, and tend to sell out first. “A lot of our plants are generally cheaper than store-bought plants because we grow them ourselves and we’re not looking to make a profit,” Kwok explained. The flower show primarily targets the moms of University students, but locals are just as likely to stop by if they prefer to buy plants from students instead of traditional retail outlets. For Smith, the most rewarding part of the Horticulture Club is being a part of the flower show. “It’s satisfying to see all the work you put into the show come together, the end product is so amazing,” she said. Gates said that getting people involved in horticulture in exciting and unconventional ways is a major goal of the club. “Most people in this university don’t know horticulture exists as a major, let alone a career choice,” she said. The flower show, with its aesthetic appeal and relatable themes, presents a unique way to introduce people from different backgrounds to horticulture.

When your mom lives on the other side of the Pacific HOLIDAY TANG Staff Writer
As
an international student, my feelings about Moms Weekend are complicated, as my mom is on the other side of the Pacific Ocean. On one hand, I am excited because it is my first time experiencing Moms Weekend, which is a special and fun part of our campus culture. On the other hand, my mom will still be 7,849 miles away while all of my friends on campus will be having a great time with their moms. I wish she could be here, too. I still remember the day I said goodbye to her before I flew across the Pacific Ocean from China. The memory of me hugging her goodbye at the airport is still crystal clear in my mind. I was neither sad about having to leave her, nor excited about all the prospective adventures I would experience here. Instead, I was in a state of numbness, simply wondering how different life would be without my family. The day I left, she was cooking breakfast for me, the way she did every day. In that moment, I did not truly appreciate her
for doing it, but now when the sun comes up and there is no jasmine-rice porridge on my table, I miss it. There have been occasions where I think of my mom and my memories with her, but the phase of adjustment was not as brutal as I imagined it would be. Everything seems to be falling into place, and surprisingly, I fit in so well that this campus almost feels like a new home. I feel a strong sense of inclusiveness and belonging, and my diverse friendships here have kept me away from loneliness since the day I moved in. Staying busy with schoolwork and campus organizations has kept me too busy to miss my mom all the time. I didn’t miss her too much, until Moms Weekend started to get closer. Multiple events and programs being held for students and their mothers are happening around campus. The creativity and novelty in these diverse programs enthralls me, but I struggle to find fascination in such occasions because they would be so much more meaningful if my mom was here. My best friends are all excited about these events and have made plans to attend a black chorus concert, a musical and a craft fair. They are all looking forward to having a good time with their moms.
When they shared their plans with me, they were so excited, and for a moment, their enthusiasm was contagious. Unfortunately, within seconds, my loneliness and longing to see my mom again returned. Since then, I have realized that I am not the only international student in this situation, and talking to others has helped me realize that there are other ways for me to celebrate Moms Weekend with my mother. I decided to surprise my mom with a special gift, a video in which I will have my best friends wish her a happy Moms Weekend in Cantonese and either send her a personal message or tell her a story of something we did this year. I can’t wait to FaceTime her after she watches it. I know it will make her smile. When I see her in a month and a half, there are so many things I will want to share with her. I can imagine myself telling her of all of my adventures in the United States as we eat delicious dim-sums, the Chinese breakfast desserts we love. My maternal grandparents will welcome our whole family to a dinner, and I will get to hear stories from when my mom was my age. Mostly, I am just looking forward to a warm hug from her.

ASSOCIATION Patricia Boland, previous vice president of fundraising of the Moms Association, said that her reasons for joining the Moms Association were very similar to Holmes’s. “I have always been active within my kids’ schools, activities and sports. My kids were reassured to know that I would have the same interest in their college careers via participation in the Moms Association as I had throughout their previous school years,” Boland said. Throughout the year, the organization also contributes to the campus by supporting students financially with scholarships. The Moms Association uses the funds collected from the craft fair and sales of raffle tickets to provide students with scholarships. These scholarships are then presented at the
Moms Association Annual Meeting and Award P resentation on the Saturday morning of Moms Weekend. “Although we invite everyone to join us at the annual meetings, we do not have a very high turnout rate for this event. It’s usually comprised of the people that we give the awards, scholarships and recognition to,” Holmes said. Some of the most esteemed distinctions are the Moms of the Year Award, Moms Association Scholarship, Illini Spirit Award and Medallion of Honor. “It has been gratifying to have my kids volunteer alongside me at Moms events, and the kids are enriched by the wonderful friendships they

have made with the moms and their respective families,” Boland said. From fundraising for scholarships to planning events for each year, the Moms Association is always busy upholding their traditions while simultaneously contributing to the campus.
