Campus traditions freshmen should participate in CLAIRE HETTINGER News editor

Freshman year is a wonderful time to spread your wings and try new things. But some of these new things that every freshman should try have been around for generations of Illini.

These are 10 of the ways you can participate in the countless campus traditions that all new students should enjoy.

Go to Quad day and sign up for too many clubs This is one of the first steps for getting involved on campus. Quad day takes place the Sunday before school starts and is a major event. Almost every club had a booth set up to answer questions and sign people up for the newsletters. And yes you'll still get the ballroom dancing emails three years later but you never know, you might go one of these times and you might love it.

Participate in the dorky dorm events

I know you're trying to be cool, you're fresh out of high school and you're in the

big league now. The dorm events seem dorky, and they kind of are, but it's a good way to meet people. And even if the people you meet at, for example, Allen Hall friendship speed dating, don't end up in your wedding, you might find someone to sit by at lunch or to get notes from in class.

It's worth a try and you won't regret it.

Try out the bar scene

Ride the rail at legend’s, go to wine night at the clybourne, get a fishbowl at firehaus, and of course drink a blue guy from Kam’s. Even if you don't drink much, the campus nightlife takes place at these fine establishments. So once you turn 19 hit the town and see what you think.

Rub Abraham Lincoln’s nose in Lincoln Hall This statue is hard to miss with a shiny gold spot for a nose. The tradition goes that students should rub lincoln’s nose for good luck and you should. Whether you get good luck or not during finals week you'll need all the help you can get.

Sit in the Block I at a football game

Keep an eye out on your email because Block-I tickets usually go on sale over the summer and you can get them much cheaper now than in the fall. This year

It’s funny to purposely kiss someone by a flame that used to be eternal but now flickers on and off but hey, what can you expect it’s college. Either way it’s fun to participate in the tradition and you never know if it will make your dreams come true.

University resources keep students safe on campus SAMANTHA JONES TOAL Assistant news editor

T

he University’s campus is generally very safe. It’s extremely rare to run into any problems walking back from class or the dining hall once dusk hits. However, as they say, it’s never a good plan to walk home alone at night, even somewhere where crime is unexpected.

Because campus is so thriving and houses nearly 40,000 students plus faculty, it’s also extremely rare to find yourself walking somewhere completely alone, even late into the evening.

But on the off chance you do find yourself alone without a buddy, there’s no need to freak out: there are definitely options to guarantee your safety.

First off, there’s an expansive bus system that can take you anywhere you need to go, minimal walking required. Bus stops are located all over campus and are easy to find with or without the Mass Transit District bus app.

If there are no buses in the area, you can call SafeRides, a smaller shuttle that will pick you up and take you back to your dorm or apartment if you’re completely alone.

If you really do need to walk, though, you can. SafeWalks, which is run by the campus police department, is another free service you can call. Essentially, you call their number, tell them where you’re located, and Student Patrol officers will escort you to your destination, no matter how late it is.

In terms of being in the loop with campus occurrences, Illini-Alert is used for incidents which present an “imminent threat to life, health, or safety to the general campus population,” according to the UIPD website. These messages provide emergency information and instructions for personal protective actions.

Illini-Alert sends informative emails and text messages and posts to Facebook and Twitter. It also enables the Emergency Web Alert System for University websites.

Last April, there was a bomb threat on campus. Immediately, students received emails and texts informing them to vacate the area. While it ended up being a false threat, students were aware of the possible danger and had time to react.

While it’s no secret that students consume alcohol, freshmen are required to attend ACE IT, a workshop that provides tips and guidelines for students who choose to partake.

If a student is placed in an emergency situation related to alcohol, there are many

immediate campus resources available and Residential Advisors on duty in the dorms are trained to handle worst-case scenario incidents.

Furthermore, the University also requires freshmen to attend a FYCARE (First Year Campus Acquaintance Rape Education) workshop.

Essentially, the workshop is an effort by the University to provide a safe community for students. FYCARE teaches incoming students important information related to sexual assault.

The workshop covers available resources on campus and within the community as well as strategies to prevent sexual assault on campus.

FYCARE also ties in with the alcohol awareness workshop, ACE IT, to discuss the role of alcohol in decision-making.

If there is a situation on campus, you can dial the campus police department by pressing the button on one of the emergency telephones. They are scattered around campus and are very accessible.

While campus is generally a pretty safe place to be, there are plenty of resources available to battle any leftover uncertainties.

C-U area offers off-campus escapes LILLIAN BARKLEY Features editor

The University campus has something for everyone, with plenty of shopping and eating destinations on Green Street, an arts and culture hub at the Krannert Center and Big Ten sports in arenas across campus.

With so much to do on campus, it's not surprising that students overlook other Champaign-Urbana attractions. Some are more off campus than others, but with the use of public transit or a bike, it's easy to experience everything the area has to offer.

One of my personal favorite destinations isn't a secret, but it is seasonal. Curtis Apple Orchard and Pumpkin Patch, 3902 S. Duncan Rd. in Champaign, is the go-to spot for traditional fall fun.

Its peak season starts in September and goes until Halloween, when students and locals head out to find the perfect pumpkin and taste the orchard's apple cider and donuts. There's also a petting zoo and corn maze, which is fun for all ages.

The orchard is technically open from

July 20 until December 20, but it's best to go during apple or pumpkin-picking season.

Another option for fresh produce is going to a farmer's market. Urbana's Market at the Square opens May 7 and operates at the corner of Illinois and Vine streets every Saturday until November 5.

It's open from 7 a.m. until noon and features local vendors with produce, honey, cheese, baked goods and handmade crafts. Local favorite food trucks including Cracked and Pandamonium Doughnuts also set up shop at the market.

If early mornings aren't your style, The Land Connection's Champaign market is open from 4 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday from May to October. The vendors turn parking lot M in downtown Champaign into a bustling one-stop shop and most of them are the same farmers who sell in Urbana.

Both markets highlight the area's focus on sustainability and agriculture, and buying from a farmer's market means supporting local businesses and getting fresher food as well. It's a pretty great way to curb all the dining hall food.

There are also activities that are yearround, such as seeing a film at the Art Theater Co-Op, 126 W. Church St., Champaign. The Art shows independent films

Urbana also has a great option for getting away from the crowds on campus: Meadowbrook Park. The 130-acre park has a main entrance at 2808 S. Race St., which leads to three miles of paved trails

surrounded by 80 acres of restored prairie. Taking a walk through the tallgrass prairie is a perfect way to destress, and it serves as a natural escape from the ARC treadmills. The large park is speckled with a wildflower garden, organic garden, herb garden and the Wandell Sculpture Garden. Even though it's just a few blocks away from the main campus it feels peacefully removed.

DO: Bring photos of your friends and family. Not only will they bring happiness during the late nights of studying; they will liven up the dorm’s plain walls.

Command strips and other easy-to-remove hangers will be your best friend.

DON’T: Bring your whole wardrobe.

Bring only the clothes you love and know you will wear. Don’t worry about not having enough t-shirts; the first few weeks of college will provide you with more opportunity for free t-shirts than you could imagine.

DO: Buy a memory foam mattress pad. Although the mattress claims to have a “soft” and “firm” side, both actually feel like the floor. Because living on campus means walking several miles a day, your fatigued muscles will thank you for bringing a mattress pad.

DON’T: Bring the whole animal kingdom of stuffed animals. Sure, you can bring your childhood favorite to comfort yourself in times of need, but if you have a whole suitcase full, you may want to reconsider your packing choices.

DO: Buy a rug. Nothing makes the dorms more uncomfortable than the cold tile floors, but throwing down a large rug is the single easiest way to make your dorm a place you’ll want to live.

DON’T: Bring the Portillo’s gift card that you got for high school graduation. If you’re from the suburbs, you’ll have to spend those gift cards at home.

While you’re there, tell them to bring Portillo’s to Champaign.

Making lifelong friends in unlikely places ISABELLA JACKSON Supplements editor

W

hen I came to college, I knew I would need to make new friends as soon as possible. Although I knew a few people coming to the University from my high school, I was used to having a large support system of friends and family at home and was nervous about not having that at a new school.

Originally, I thought that I would be great friends with my roommate and meet like-minded people in my classes, but looking back at my freshman year, this was not at all what happened. My roommate and I got along, but we never became close friends, and I struggled to form many friendships outside of the classroom with people in my major.

Instead, the greatest friendships that I have formed on campus had come from chance encounters and group involvement, even when I wasn’t necessarily trying to make friends. I met one of my closest friends when I was coming back to my dorm room alone one night during the fi rst week of school. I was in a horrible mood when I ran into Maggie in the hallway, and

because I looked sad, she invited me into her room to snack on a giant box of Goldfish. We’ve been great friends ever since.

The organizations that I joined were much more helpful in providing a place for me to create real friendships than my classes. After the initial informational meetings had been over, there were icebreaker games and social events that allowed me to meet existing and new members. Sometimes just attending events, even when I didn’t know anyone else in the group, led to getting involved in ways that took me out of my comfort zone, but that were so rewarding.

For example, I became very involved with Illini Pride, the RSO in charge of the student cheering sections for all the sports, because I volunteered for an event based on a Facebook post in the Block I page. The girl in charge of the event became a great friend of mine and ended up connecting me with my current job on campus.

One of the benefits of a large school like the University is that when I have gotten frustrated with a group of friends or felt lonely on campus, I have been able to change the situation quickly. It is impossible to know every person on campus, and every time I have joined a new club, started a new job or took a new position in an

organization, I have met a group of totally new people. Many times these new people have connections to current friends – campus can seem much smaller than it really is – but it can be refreshing to have more options of friends to spend time with.

The most important part of making friends on campus is just to give it time.

Don’t worry if after Welcome Weekend, you still don’t feel at home with your group of new friends. There is still plenty of time, and most likely, many of the

people you hang out with the fi rst weeks of freshman year will not be as close with you by the next semester. While you won’t be best friends with every person you meet freshman year, it is so important to try to put yourself out there. The person you run into in the dining hall or who sits next to you in an informational meeting could be a friend you keep for life.

The kick scooter: A fun, convenient way to get to class MARIAH SCHAEFER Assistant features editor

L

ate into my freshman year of college, my twin sister added yet another object to our tiny dorm room: a kick scooter. She had bought one online because she was tired of riding her bicycle to class but still wanted a mode of transportation that would allow her to zip through the Main Quad.

She felt the scooter was perfect. It was fast, light and slim. Most importantly, she could simply fold it up and take it with her into a building once she arrived at her destination. Gone were the days when she had to park and lock her mode of transportation outside. How convenient!

I suffered because she had no place to store the metal object. She initially decided to place it on the only open area in our room, which was in front of my dresser. I had to move it every time I wanted to get to my clothes, and it would sometimes fall on my toes. I think I might have made her move the scooter to her side of the room, but I do not remember clearly now.

I do remember I was annoyed at my sister, and because of that, I decided I would never get a kick scooter. People kept telling me I would want one after seeing my sister scoot around campus, but I was sure that would not be the case.

A while later, once I had my schedule figured out for the fall, I realized I would not have a lot of time to walk a long distance between two of my classes. Locking and unlocking my bicycle would waste too much time, so I found myself making the decision I vowed never to make: I bought the same scooter as my sister.

When we arrived back on campus, we were surprised to see more people were using scooters. Before my sister got hers, we had not seen many students scooting around campus. Now, we could spot a few per week. This prompted me to believe my twin sister had started a trend on campus.

I started to get a sense of why having a scooter was a good idea when I noticed people around campus observing me as I scooted past them. Sometimes, they looked surprised to see someone in college riding a scooter, but I also heard several students who were tired from walking whispering to one another about how they wished they had a scooter to get around campus. In the end, I was happy with my decision to buy one after all.

But using a scooter on campus is not always easy. Scooting up slopes is quite the exercise, and my scooter can get heavy if I carry it inside buildings and up several flights of stairs. I also use my scooter only when the weather is nice; I retire it during the winter months. During the winter, I walk and ride the bus.

Having a kick scooter, however, makes my daily routine more fun. Because I live

Then, I easily board the bus with my scooter. Once I arrive, I simply scoot away into

Tackling the unwanted general education requirements JOSEPH LONGO Assistant news editor

S

tarting this fall, new students must take a U.S. minorities course as part of their General Education requirements. This is the latest effort to address civil rights tensions on campus, including an alleged racist fraternity party and antilatino/latina chalking on campus.

Previously, students chose to take either a U.S. minorities course or a different nonwestern course. However, students will now have to take classes in both areas of study.

Unsurprisingly, the new regulation received resistance that incoming students will now have to factor another course into their potentially highly-structured, overloaded course plan. However, if executed properly, the additional singular class will not hinder studies, but instead, broaden understanding.

Because most students balance Univeristy mandated gen eds with departmental required electives, many students stress

about completing all required courses within their four years. However, there is no need for excessive concern. Instead, proper utilizing of the UIUC Course Catalog is crucial. The site offers a variety of different ways to search for courses, specifically filtering for the ever-important “crosslisters," classes fulfilling two or more requirements for students. Crosslisting is the crux to properly navigating gen eds and departmental requirements. Thus, proper use of the course catalog alleviates much concerns and assists in successful course planning.

Just because a class meets multiple general education requirements for a student does not mean a student will find it interesting or easy. In fact, crosslisters are notoriously more difficult because they address multiple concepts and themes within one course. But, don’t give up just yet. There are solutions for this tool: unofficial University student Facebook groups and websites.

The non-University associated groups like Easy Classes at U of I are a secret source for finding which classes to take. Moreover, RateMyProfessors.com is a staple when choosing which instructor to have for

courses with multiple sections.

Gen eds can certainly benefit students with potential easy courses boosting their GPA against their more rigorous major requirements. However, they too offer a chance to escape the insular nature of the same students and courses within a major.

As evidenced by the new U.S. Minorities course, gen eds broaden a student’s understanding if students allow for this.

Here are a few general education courses to consider when faced with the ever-daunting enrollment time slot.

AFRO 101/HIST 174 Black America, 1619-Present

If you are interested in politics or current events, no other class may be as important to understanding the historical impacts of today’s current Black Lives Matter and civil rights movements.

General Education Criteria: History & Philosophical Perspective, US Minority Culture

JOUR 200 Introduction to Journalism

Every profession requires fluid, smart writing, but not all majors supply this

much-needed skill. However, this class is a perfect opportunity to practice concise, impactful writing.

GER 250 Grimms’ Fairy Tales

What better way to study the true stories of Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, then in a course potentially fulfilling three requirements. This highly-sought course fills up quickly, so consider for enrolling as an upperclassman with a better timeslot.

General Education Criteria: Literature and the Arts, Western Comparative Culture, and Advanced Composition.

GEOG 100 Introduction to Meteorology

This big lecture hall course is a staple for fulfilling gen ed requirements. However, paying attention in classes provides insight about meteorological studies with ease and understanding.

Join a Fraternity/Sorority

Joining a fraternity or sorority is a great way to get to know a lot of people and get involved socially and philanthropically in the community. I joined one, and so far it has been one of the best decisions of my college career.

I have made many life-long friends in the process and have greatly enjoyed all of the benefits it has provided me. Even if a traditional fraternity or sorority isn’t your thing, there are also plenty of major-specific fraternities that are not only great to meet more people, but also are good to have on a resume.

Join Clubs and Student Organizations

Illinois currently has more than 1,400 RSOs and that number still growing by the day. You can find clubs ranging from the golf club to something like dance or even Quidditch (yes, like Harry Potter.). There are organizations that involve your studies, personal interests, and honestly pretty much anything you can think of. If you can’t find any that interest you, feel free to start your own. During my freshman year, in addition to joining my fraternity, I got involved in the golf club, Block I, and at The Daily Illini. Through these, I was able to meet a lot of great friends as well as staying involved in things I like to do.

Get a job

Though many students will not necessarily be excited to work right when they get on campus, it is definitely another good way to get involved and make some extra money to spend on whatever. There are plenty of jobs you can get as a freshman, anywhere from working at the bars, the gym, or at the Daily Illini, like I do. No matter what you are interested in — even if it’s just making money — there is a job for you.

Try something new

No matter how prepared you may think you are for college, there are always going to be times when you have to go out of your comfort zone. If it is something schoolwise, or even just adjusting to the dorms, college is a new experience for everyone. One way to really adjust and is just to try something new. Even if you don’t stick with it, give it a shot. It could be something as small as going to your first football game, but no matter what it is, try something out.

In the end, I’m sure you’ll be able to find your own ways to get involved. All of the opportunities are out there; it’s just a matter of which ones you decide to take advantage of.

Essential skills for college ABIGALE SVOBODA Brand manager

W

hen I started college way back in the fall of 2013, my friend from high school, who was just starting school as well, called to tell me he had just taught someone from our rival high school how to do laundry. We laughed about it, but when I got off the phone, I couldn’t help but wonder how this kid made it to college without learning how to do his own laundry. Plenty of students come to college each year fully prepared to tackle their classes, make new friends and get involved, without knowing some basics of living on their own.

Here are a few key components of making sure your child thrives in their first year of college.

Time Management

Chances are, most students about to start college — especially at the U of I — have developed good time management skills during high school; however, college provides students with much more “free time,” which can definitely be daunting. Having just a few hours of class each day sounds like a dream come true — when I started college, my younger sisters called it “summer camp” — but in reality you have much more work to do outside of the classroom.

Everyone develops their own systems and routines but what’s important is that something is established. I found that what works best for me is to schedule my free time — I know, that sounds crazy. Allow me to explain. If I have two hours in between classes, I’ll plan to go to the library or the Union and get some work done — and yes, I normally plan out what tasks I’ll tackle during that time. I’m not too wary of using that time to run errands or schedule meetings if need be but having time set aside to keep up with my regular work keeps me on tasks.

Keeping a budget

Oh boy. This is a biggie. Unlike time management, budgeting isn’t something many new college students had to learn during high school. Budgeting isn’t a part of the typical high school curriculum and — though I think it would be an extremely beneficial general education requirement — it’s unfortunately not a part of most University student’s education either. So it all boils down to what your parents have taught you and maybe a little common sense.

Whether I’m talking to friends at the University, friends across the country, sophomores or seniors, whenever spending comes up, everyone seems to say the same thing: “I spend so much on food!” Being a freshman on a meal plan is nice because food expenses aren’t really a concern, but the temptation to eat out will still be there. I know, I know, Joe’s burgers are half priced on Thursday and really hit the spot, but

even cheap food adds up. Make sure your daughter or son realizes the cost of eating out, especially when there’s a meal plan involved.

Explain to them that they’ll also want money to go to the bars, a football game or see a concert. Personally, I love to eat out, and I love to grab a coffee at Starbucks, but I also love to go out with friends and indulge in experiences and cute new outfits now and then. My mom explained it to me best by simply telling me I had to pick. On a college student’s budget, I could have Starbucks every day or a fun social life, but not both.

I still stop in Starbucks more often than I should but I’ve learned to make my own coffee at home — it’s almost as good.

Laundry

This is a five-minute lesson you can teach your soon-to-be Illini while you’re doing the laundry and it should stick. Every washing and drying machine is different but they’re all pretty easy to figure out once you know the basics. After that, the most important tips are to remember to separate whites and colors and not to put your denim in the dryer. Bonus: Tide Pods are much easier and more convenient to use than traditional laundry detergent, especially when you’re lugging a week’s worth of clothes down four flights of stairs.

Cooking

Most freshmen don’t need to know how to cook, but it never hurts to have a few simple meals in your back pocket. Whether it’s how to make a perfect PB&J or easy, healthy snacks to keep on hand — knowing a few tricks will come in handy on days when dining hall food sounds utterly awful or in between meals.

Cleaning

Dorm rooms are small to begin with, but they feel even smaller when they’re cluttered and dirty. Your student likely knows how to put their clothes and books away, vacuum and clean surfaces but there’s a greater chance they won’t realize — or care — when a little tidying up is necessary. Rather than teach your daughter or son how to clean, make sure they’re equipped with tools that make it easy and all of your best tricks for getting it done quickly.

Task sharing

As one of five, I’ve been familiar with this one for a while but a lot of students grow up as only children — or at least don’t have to share a room from birth to 18 years-old.

No one should be entirely responsible for their roommate, but it doesn’t hurt to help out when you can. If it’s the roommate’s turn to take the garbage out but they have a big exam coming up, help out and trust that they’ll pick up the slack later.

Activities to do around campus when visiting your student MICHAEL GASICK Assistant sports editor

P

arents of children who attend the University of Illinois have a variety of activities to do when they visit.

In the fall, students can take their parents to see a football game at Memorial Stadium.

The Saturday tradition of students heading to the stadium to cheer on their Illini is an activity many students participate in.

After the game, families can grab lunch at one of the many restaurants or bars open on or off campus. Students can lead their parents to campus bars on Green Street, featuring Murphy’s Pub, Brother’s Bar and Grill or Legends. Other bars on campus include Kam’s, and Red Lion.

Neil Street also offers multiple restaurants for families to dine. Restaurants such as Meatheads, The Ribeye, and Atlanta Bread are all great locations to sit down and eat.

After lunch or dinner, families can go to Krannert Center for the Performing Arts.

There, people can take in a concert or grab a coffee in the lounge area. Krannert Center showcases students’ musical talents and abilities, as well as local bands and symphony orchestras.

If students are in the musical spirit, they can also take their parents to see a band at the Canopy Club in Urbana. The Canopy Club has taken in many popular bands and singers over the years and is conveniently located in the heart of campus.

The arts scene in Champaign-Urbana is also highlighted by The Virginia Theatre.

The theatre presents multiple movies on its large screen and is home to the popular Ebertfest festival in the spring. It is located in the center of downtown Champaign.

Some students may also want to take their parents on a walk through campus. The Main Quad is a great place for students to tour with their parents, showing them where their classes are that semester. The Quad’s scenic view includes the domed Foellinger Auditorium, the Illini Union, and the Bell Tower on the South Quad.

The Quad is easily walkable, and there are a variety of restaurants available in the student union on the north end of the Quad.

If families want to learn more about the University on their walks, they should stop

by Altgeld Tower. The building has many plaques and information inside providing historical information about Illinois, including important dates and figures to attend the University. The tower is located to the west of the Illini Union.

Illinois football will host seven home games in the fall. of campus by visiting the many parks and forest preserves in the community. Meadowbrook Park is a great place for families to take walks or have picnics. The park includes an extensive path that allows for joggers and bikers as well.

If students want to stay closer to campus to have a picnic or take a walk, the University of Illinois Arboretum is a convenient place to do so. Located off of Lincoln Avenue, the Arboretum is home to cross-country meets

in the fall and offers walkable paths and gardens for the public to enjoy.

There is no shortage of family-friendly activities for parents to do when they visit their children on campus. After a few weeks on campus, each student will have his or her favorite places to show their family beyond the more common attractions.

'Getting well soon' is possible at college ANNABETH CARLSON Managing editor for online

uring the spring of my freshman year, I woke up with a cough and runny nose. However, as I was busy with midterm exams, sorority activities and my new job as a reporter at The Daily Illini, I told myself I was fine, even as my “cold” got worse and worse.

However, one morning a few weeks later, I woke up and started coughing up blood.

Fast forward a few hours, after my parents rushed to campus and took me to the Emergency room, we learned that I had a 104-degree fever, a severe sinus infection and ruptured blood vessels in my nose.

Sorry for the graphic description, but this is the prime example of what not to do in college. When college students are on their own for the first time, it can be easy to disregard their health since their mothers are not around to check on them.

For me, what should have been a common sinus infection treated by antibiotics turned into a hospital visit and five days of missed classes. I had to learn the hard way, but here

are four resources on or near campus that can help students stay on top of their health:

McKinley Health Center

Conveniently located on campus at 1109 S. Lincoln Ave. in Urbana, McKinley is the first place you should go if you are feeling under the weather. Many of the services at McKinley are already paid for through the Health Service Fee that all students pay as part of tuition.

The center has many functions like “DialA-Nurse,” where you can speak with a nurse about any health concerns, a pharmacy, vaccinations, a women’s health clinic, mental health counseling and more. One of my favorite aspects of McKinley is their free “cold packs,” which include cold medicine, cough drops, etc. As soon as I sense a cold coming on, I drop by to grab one.

Flu shots

McKinley is a great service if you are feeling sick, but the center also helps prevent illness in the first place with free flu shots every fall. Nurses set up mobile flu shot stations around campus in convenient areas like the Undergraduate Library.

All you need is your student ID to get the vaccination.

Counseling Center

As college can be an unfamiliar and stressful time in new students’ lives, it is important to keep an eye on mental health, not just physical health. The Counseling Center, located at 610 E. John Street in Champaign, provides confidential individual counseling and even group counseling. They also do same-day counseling.

Disability Resources & Education Services (DRES)

DRES can help students with disabilities stay healthy and make the most of their college experience, through academic services, custom living situations, physical therapy services and more. To learn more, visit www. disability.illinois.edu.

Carle Foundation Hospital

For health emergencies, call 911 for immediate assistance. The closest hospital to campus is Carle Foundation Hospital, which is located at 611 W. Park Street in Urbana. There are also three locations in Champaign and two others in Urbana.

You may start playing interior designer for your child’s new 12’ by 12’ home or emphasize your young adult’s dire tendency to pack terribly. This brings me to my first piece of advice for moving-in day: listen.

Listen to your kid

Upon getting college, your child will immediately feel a sense of entitlement or freedom from the release of your grasp.

Let them start making some real “grownup” decisions and listen to them when moving in, whether it deal with unpacking or at the store with buying stuff you may have forgotten. This process, while it is about you too, is really about them.

This is it; this is his or her first taste of college. Don’t take over, just be there for them, be cool. They’ll ask for your help if they feel like they really need it, just like they will during the year.

Go shopping

Upon realizing that the bag they thought was full of amazing savory snacks for the semester was actually full of framed pictures of their mom, your kid will probably suggest going shopping.

Provide your child the wonderful experience of Wal-Mart or Target to pick up some snacks, a rug, a chair that doesn’t

rock for no reason, or whatever your child may need. It’s a good last time with your student to get some necessities they’ll need for the year, and whether they realize it at the time or not, it is a moment of luxury for them. It is likely that they will soon become that “broke college kid” so it might be a while until they see their shopping cart that full.

Go out and eat

Dining hall food is great on this campus, but slowly and surely your kid will start to miss food from home. Give your child the last slice (literally or figuratively) of this by taking them out to eat after you’re done unpacking. Go sit down somewhere on Green Street and have a last meal with your student. Ask them how they’re feeling about college so far, or have a quiet meal. I don’t know; you know how to eat with your child better than I do. Just enjoy your lunch, everything is unpacked, the food is decent, your child is finally leaving for college.

It’s okay to cry

It is definitely more than okay to cry when saying your final goodbyes. You worked hard to put them in this position; it’s okay to shed a few tears when you leave. Trust me, your kid will understand, it shows that you really do care about them. They might join in too, so just let the emotions roll. After the small pool of tears have been made on the rug you just bought, leave some encouraging final wisdom for them. Whether it seems like they’re actually listening at the time doesn’t matter, your kid will remember those last words as they go on through the year. Even it is a dad joke.

arking on campus can be a hassle, and most often it is too expensive to be worth the cost, especially to a freshman. Luckily, there are many ways for students to get around campus and back and forth from school to their hometowns without purchasing a parking pass.

Around Campus:

Walking: Campus is very pedestrianfriendly, and walking is definitely the most popular way of getting around. Even if you have class on opposite sides of campus, there are always sidewalks and crosswalks to make getting there easy. On some of the major intersections, such as the one at Wright Street and Green Street, there are diagonal crosswalks where the stoplights turn red in every direction and pedestrians have the right-ofway to cross diagonally.

Biking: Students who like the commute across campus to be quicker may opt to bike to class. There are bicycle racks outside of both residence halls and academic buildings, so there is always a place to lock up your bike to keep it secure while you are asleep or in class. Bicycle repair stations located across

campus allow students to fix broken chains or any other issues they may face. The campus police department offers a bicycle and pedestrian safety class that can teach bikers the rules of the road and proper safety techniques.

Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District: When it is raining or cold, students take advantage of the campus bus system.

Bus lines run around campus, to downtown Urbana, and to downtown Champaign. For students without a car, the busses are a great way to get to the grocery store, movie theater or mall. The 22 Illini is the main line that runs around campus and is a great way for freshmen to start using the busses, but the Illini Bus app is also helpful to download to see routes, pickup times and bus stop locations.

Willard Airport is only a few miles off of campus, and offers flights to over 175 cities. Buses can also take students to O’Hare Airport in Chicago or other airports in Bloomington, Illinois or Indianapolis, Indiana.

ing with other students from the same area as you. If you are from Illinois, most likely you will meet someone who is driving near your hometown who would not mind you tagging along, especially if you pitch in for gas money or snacks!

Off Campus:

Buses: There are multiple bus lines that run from campus to Chicago, St. Louis and Rockford, to name only a few cities. Peoria Charter Coach, Greyhound and Suburban Express are some of the most commonly seen on campus. Many of these buses come daily, and some provide amenities such as free wi-fi.

Trains: Downtown Champaign has an Amtrak station, so students can catch a train from Champaign to almost any major city in the United States.The train ride to Union Station in downtown Chicago is especially easy

arents, the time has come, and your little babies are going off to college.

You’ve raised them to be the people they are today, and it’s time for them to venture off into the new world that is college.

This can be scary, understandably so, throughout their entire academic lives, you’ve been by your children’s sides.

You’ve helped guide them through which classes they should take and motivated them to get top-notch grades. Well, I’m sorry to say it’s time to let go of that luxury.

It might be hard at first, but leaving behind constant educational monitoring is a must. Your child is are at the point in their life where they need control over their academics. Having this control is the only way for them to grow and find themselves effectively.

Many parents have an idea of what they want their children to major in. That’s not necessarily a problem, but parents must realize their longings might not correlate directly to their children’s reality.

Students will benefit from taking class-

es they want to take. Working with material that they find interesting is vitally important for a student’s success educationally. Personally, when taking a course that genuinely sparks my interest, I tend to get a better grade. If parents are pressuring their children into taking certain courses, then their grades might be impacted accordingly.

It’s also important to note that in college a decision isn’t final. The initial major a student starts with might completely differ from what major ends up on his or her diploma. That’s what college is all about.

The option of finding what fits one’s interest the best is out there and waiting to be found, so parents must remember to be patient.

I’m not saying parents shouldn’t have any role in their child’s academic decision making. Offering suggestions and voicing opinions are important, not to mention meaningful. To show you’re interested, but also understanding can give your child pure motivation. A parent’s support is never underestimated.

I’m a journalism major, and sometimes that can be hard for people to understand.

However, I love the field, and the work I do with it every day. The endless support that I get from my parents when pursuing this career gives me even more of a reason to succeed academically.

Let’s not forget that in college people are there to help as well. Academic advisors and professors have their jobs for a reason. If students are struggling in school, they will be the first to know and act accordingly. These people will be monitoring all the things parents can only dream of getting their hands on. Students really do have an endless amount of resources available. These resources will ultimately help them maneuver through college academics, and it’s up to the parents to allow their child to utilize them.

Prepare your student for the drinking culture on campus MASAKI SUGIMOTO Editor-in-Chief

A

s a parent, you are excited for your child to be taking a new step in life and going off to college. Illinois is a school that ranks near the top in countless categories like engineering, disability services and more. One of those top rankings is the number one party school, according to the Princeton Review.

This can make any parent worry for the well-being of their student and their chances of leaving Champaign-Urbana with a degree.

To make sure that you don't have a student who goes overboard with partying, try having a talk with them. Ignoring the party culture that exists at the University will not help your student avoid it.

If you haven't already, talk to them about alcohol and what it can do to the body. Also, let them know the repercussions of if they choose to drink while they are still underage. Regardless of whether the student decides to drink or not, it is important they know about drinking alcohol and what the consequences are.

The second is to ask them what their intentions are. Trying to be honest here is important because you must set a standard for them when they are off at school. Chances are you won't be there when the student is asked to go

out to a party or not. Your child will need to make that decision on their own. Setting this standard will be important, as it is one of the only ways that your student can use part of your judgment when you are not there.

Another tip would be to suggest alternatives.

There are countless events, clubs and other activities that the University offers outside of the party scene on a regular basis.

It can give your student different avenues to hang out with their friends and have fun. Drinking is not the only thing to do in college. There is everything ranging from lect u res from influential individuals to tea drinking ceremonies that a student will be able to participate in.

Lastly, stress education with them. Going to the University certainly is not a cheap endeavor, and one poor semes-

ter can force your student to stay longer than they have to. College is going to be much more difficult than high school. Students may have a rude awakening when they figure out that they cannot do an essay all the night before and get an A. Partying too much before important classes or exams will not work either. No matter what they do along the way, the main goal is to leave Illinois with a degree in their hands.

Ensuring that you set a standard and tell them what you expect out of them will go a long way for your child. They need to be able to know as much infor-

mation as possible before making any decisions related to partying or drinking. But ultimately, your student is smart enough to make the right decisions for themselves. He or she got into the University in the first place, right?

Moms and Dads Weekends are the perfect chance to see your kids COURTNEY BOYER Assistant opinions editor

T

he beginning of college can be as hard for parents as it is for the actual students. Mothers and fathers are left at home hoping and wondering if their child is living a fulfilling and balanced life while they are away.

For those mothers and fathers who are missing their college student and are curious as to what their day-to-day life is like on campus, there are two main opportunities throughout the school year where they can come and see what their son or daughter's life is all about. These two opportunities are Moms Weekend and Dads Weekend.

Dads Weekend comes first in the school year and usually falls on the first weekend of November. The 2016 Dads Weekend is already scheduled for November 4-6. During Dads Weekend, there are many opportunities to make sure he has a fun time. There is always a home football game that weekend and lots of tailgating opportunities.

Many clubs, sororities and fraternities will set something up to make sure that the tailgate is fun and low-cost for Dad. After a morning of tailgating, the stands are usually packed as students go to watch the game with

their dad. During the football game, Dad of the Year is announced and usually goes to the father of a Illinois student who has gone above and beyond in his support.

After the football game, which is hopefully won by the Illini, many Dads go out to a college bar such as Firehouse or Joe's to celebrate with good food, and if you are of drinking age, some drinks. Dads Weekend is a great opportunity for fathers to spend some time with their college student while they are away at school.

Moms Weekend is the same, and moms usually love getting to spend one-on-one time with their child, especially while they are away at school. Moms Weekend usually occurs in April, and Moms Weekend 2017 is already scheduled for April 7-9. Usually by then the weather is starting to get warmer and mothers and students can stroll around campus and enjoy the weather and blossoming trees.

During Moms Weekend, there are usually mom-friendly events to enjoy during the day. These include a craft fair, a flower show and brunch at Memorial Stadium. Of course, mothers would also enjoy eating at one of the campus restaurants, or just getting to know their child’s friends and their mothers.

Sunday is usually filled with brunches and goodbyes, but mothers leave knowing that their child is having fun and working hard.

It’s also a fun glimpse into the fun that their child is having, as well as an opportunity to learn more about the campus and the school in general. with parents. This makes for an awesome weekend. If nothing else, these weekends serve as reminders to call your mother and father more often, and thank them for all that they do.

Finding a home in the residence halls CHARLOTTE CARROLL Sports editor

M

ost people give FAR/PAR, the dorms Florida Avenue Residence Hall and Pennsylvania Avenue Residence Hall, a bad rep; however, I can’t say enough good things about my freshman experience living in the dorms at Illinois. So much so, that my friends and I decided to live in the dorms a second year.

To me, the only downsides of my firstyear dorm was the distance and lack of air-conditioning. But even then, I only had to suck up the heat for a month, and the distance kept off the freshman 15.

Not bad, as it left the positives to far outweigh the negatives.

College is a whole new ballgame, and campus is full of possibilities. Coming from a high school where so many students attend Illinois, I was worried about running into my fellow classmates left and right. It turns out I had nothing to be worried about.

I ended up being that girl who sat in the dorm lounge the first few weeks, getting to know my neighbors and starting conver-

sations with random people walking by.

You never know what will come out of it, so take advantage of all of the different people you meet and take the time to learn about what makes them so unique.

Because of this, I can say I know so many more people on campus now and was able to meet some of my really good friends. Plus, campus feels much smaller as I run into people from the dorm years.

Living in a dorm as you experience college is such a wild ride. The people you meet become your family, your future roommates for all of college and just a whole new support system.

I was so fortunate to have a floor both freshman and sophomore year where we really looked after each and spent hours together. From our first college parties to prank wars with the upstairs boys, the time we spent together was full of laughs and learning as we experienced college together.

There are many sleepless nights as you gossip in the common room or each other’s rooms, watching movies from Disney classics to new favorites. You bond with random people over dinner in the dining hall and soon pick your favorite meals.

One of the greatest things is knowing you can knock on a friend’s door whenev-

er you need them. You don’t have to make plans or leave your building in the cold snow.

It’s hard to sum up the dorms, as they will undoubtedly mean something different for everyone. But it’s a chance to branch out, make new friends and learn more about yourself.

As I start my senior year, it’s weird to think my first day in Babcock Hall was

three years ago. You’re going to change as a person in your time in college, which isn’t a bad thing at all. You become a better one because of the experiences and the people you meet.

As my floormates would say, Bab Three and Scott Two for life!

How to get involved in Champaign's music scene CHRISTINE PALLON Buzz editor

hampaign-Urbana has long been known for its vibrant music scene.

Since REO Speedwagon’s formation here in 1967 (fun fact: there’s a street called REO Speedwagon Way in downtown Champaign), the town has churned out other nationally known acts like Hum, American Football, Braid and Poster Children. Beyond the big names to come out of the town lies an active, diverse and everevolving local music community.

Getting involved in an established music scene can be daunting. Even if you’re not interested in starting a band and playing shows yourself, just attending a concert at an unknown venue might be a little nervewracking. If you’re interested in local music but aren’t sure how to get involved, here are three tips for getting started.

Join the “Champaign Area Shows” Facebook group.

This is your gateway into the local music scene. If you’re new and don’t have any friends in town involved with the scene, this group will help keep you updated on

every show that’s happening in C-U, from big hip-hop and EDM shows at larger bars and clubs to small punk shows in someone’s basement. Plus, at over four thousand members, it’s the perfect place to network with local musicians if you’re looking to start a band.

Browse Bandcamp.

For the uninitiated, Bandcamp is a website musicians use to stream and sell their releases. It’s by far the easiest way to access and purchase local music short of going into one of the three record stores in town. Simply search “Champaign” into the search bar, and you’ll have thousands of local releases at your fi ngertips.

Know your local venues.

Just as the sound of the local scene is always changing, venues are constantly changing, too. Just within the past year, See You CD & Vinyl stopped putting on shows, DIY basement venue the Dingbat Dungeon held its last show and beloved bar Mike N Molly’s closed its doors. This art space books local shows of all kinds - drone, hardcore, punk, sludge, metal, folk, rap and more. Most shows are all ages, but some occasionally have age restrictions.

Independent Media Center 202 S. Broadway Ave. in downtown Urbana.

This venue is one to watch for the upcoming year. Having been largely inactive over the past few years, the IMC was once a major player in the local music scene. Now, the local community is looking to revive it with regular all-ages shows. Should things go as planned for the venue, the IMC could very well become a hub for local music once more. Shows are for all-ages.

Once you’ve connected with the community online, listened to local bands and know where the venues are - you’re all set to get involved in local music. If you can’t find any shows that interest you, try checking out this year’s Pygmalion Festival, which is a great way to see some local acts while still catching big-name bands.

California to Illinois: The out-of-state experience MICHELLE TAM Design editor

"W

hat made you come all the way to Illinois from California?"

I’ve been asked this question at least five hundred times since I’ve gotten to this state. Sometimes the mere fact that I got accepted here into a program that I’m interested in just isn’t a good enough reason for people.

Sure, I love the Golden State and all, but from the other dumb things I’ve been asked, it seems like people have this extremely skewed perception that California is an absolute paradise full of beach blonde surfers who eat In-n-Out for every meal and smoke weed as their only pastime.

I’ve lived my entire life in the same house in the same city: Fremont, California. I grew up with consistent temperatures, the Pacific Ocean only an hour drive away, and all my Asian neighbors and classmates; these things were the extent of my small and comfortable world. When I was young and naive, I had no idea there were other places in the country that weren’t just like the suburbs of the San

Francisco Bay Area.

However, for college, I decided to move 2,000 miles away to Illinois, a place where I had no experience and absolutely zero ties. It is the most terrifying thing I’ve ever had to do. As a 17-year-old living alone in a state I’d never been to before, I definitely questioned my decision in the beginning. Why did I come all the way to Illinois?

I spent the first semester of freshman year withdrawn and homesick, finding refuge in texting and calling my family and friends back home and counting down the days until Fall Break when I could see mountains and palm trees again.

It was harder for me to find where I belonged among the rest of the 40,000 students here when I was constantly longing to go back home, to the familiar. It also didn’t help that I was forced to experience some of the coldest, most bitter temperatures of my entire life.

It took me long enough, but I finally realized that my sully attitude about moving so far was the only thing holding me back from seeing everything that U of I could really offer me. Only toward the end of my first year here, after switching majors and realizing what career I want to pursue, did I finally discover my niche at this huge school. I finally learned to welcome the fact that I was lucky enough to explore

a new part of the country and embrace every opportunity that came my way.

So despite the homesickness and culture shock and the dumb questions, I’m so immensely glad I came to the University of Illinois because I’ve gotten to learn more than I ever thought I would and do awesome things I would have never dreamed of. From meeting all kinds of people, to being a part of so many different organizations and cultures, to trying unique classes outside of my realm, I learned to love this university. Coming halfway across the country is a choice I am proud of and I now bleed orange and blue.

Despite this, living so far away from home has other challenges too. I am unfamiliar with the concept of “going home for a weekend” and having “my parents come down to visit me for lunch.” Every time break swings around, it takes me an entire day to get back home. Oh, and don’t forget about that out-of-state tuition thing.

But it’s all worth it.

While my friends back home stayed in their sheltered bubbles of constant sunshine and clear skies, I was in Illinois braving everything from 20 mph winds to flash floods to icy snowstorms. And while my friends went home during their breaks, I was up in Chicago trying Lou Malnati's renowned deep-dish pizza and living downtown in the School of the Art Institute

of Chicago. Or I was in Columbus, Ohio eating massive donuts from The Short North and jumping into Ohio State's freezing Mirror Lake as part of their football game tradition. Or I was in the Wisconsin Dells, cruising through the Wisconsin River and touring the beautiful scenery on a Duck vehicle. I’m so excited to continue to explore more parts of the Midwest.

Going out of state was the furthest thing from easy there is, but breaking out of my comfort zone to attend this amazing school amidst the cornfields has only granted me opportunities I wouldn’t be able to find anywhere else. I also believe that surviving two Midwest winters has made me a stronger person; I no longer think 50 degrees is freezing.

California is great, but it’s easy to get stuck in this narrow-minded mindset that it’s the only place to be. I mean, there’s no water there for pete’s sake, and the traffic is terrible. But we're students! We're still young and adventurous, so travel and break out of your bubble while you can.

Moving out of your home state to another by yourself isn’t a walk in the park, but I can’t stress how grateful I am for all the new experiences in the past two years.

Dealing with roommates MASAKI SUGIMOTO Editor-in-Chief

T

hings can be exciting or terrifying when you find out that you got assigned to be roommates with your friend from high school or get someone at random who is from the other side of the world. Everyone with roommates knows that you will eventually have a problem with them or them with you. Sometimes you will be able to iron the issues out, other times it will prove to be more difficult. Even when you and your roommate are very different, basic rules can make the living situation easier.

The most important thing to do is to set strict ground rules before you get to campus. Whether it is restrictions on having guests over, how loud music can be or upkeep of the room, make sure to set those standards early and get them on paper.

Try posting them on a fridge or the main door so that people are reminded of the standards they need to hold. The important part is these standards need to be concrete. Set a number on how many people you can have over, or set a time when you can't play loud music. These make the rules clear and prevent your roommate from worrying and having a vague idea of what everyone's expectation is.

Another important aspect is to speak up when you are having a problem with something your roommate is doing. If you don't,

things can get worse without solving anything. If the standards you set are not being met, meet with your roommate or try to make sure that they follow the ground rules, or change the rules if you have to. This can ensure that even if you realize someone is difficult to live with that you guys will be able to iron out your differences and have a happy environment. If you need to, know that these rules can vary on a case by case basis.

To make sure all of this works out, it is vital that everyone can keep in contact. There could be an explosion in the microwave, you could get food everywhere or you may have found out you have a bad cold. When problems like that do arise, make sure that you and your roommates stay in contact so that they have an idea of what to expect and can help deal with problems with the space you live in as soon as they happen. It can also give both people a clear idea of how something happened and to know if you need to let your RA know, and what to do if you can prevent issues from reoccurring.

Lastly, just make sure everyone is having fun. Your room should be a place where you and your roommates can relax, hangout, and forget about the stresses of life and schoolwork. In the end, you are stuck with the person, whether they are random or they are your best friend from high school. So try to make the most out of this experience known as dorm life.

T

he University offers its students many different avenues to succeed academically, but with all the stress of proj-

ects and essays, Illini need a way to unwind.

From swimming in the outdoor pool to enjoying a fun skate at the Illinois Ice Arena, the University’s campus recreation offers numerous ways to have fun on campus.

The first and most popular place where students learn about campus rec is at the Activities and Recreation Center, or ARC.

The four-level building offers numerous basketball and racquetball courts, an indoor and outdoor pool, an indoor track, weights and even a rock-climbing wall.

For students looking to relax and not do too much physical activity, the ARC also has a sauna, numerous multipurpose rooms, a kitchen where students can learn to cook and even a place to get a massage. These fun things happen through different events and can easily be accessed through the ARC’s calendar.

The ARC can be too far for some students, especially those who live in Urbana, which is why Campus Recreation Center East, CRCE, is a good alternative. There, students have three basketball courts, three racquetball courts, an indoor pool with a slide, an indoor track and a MAC gym.

Both facilities offer numerous intramural opportunities for different sports throughout the school year. Many of these leagues play at the facilities or at one of the numerous outdoor playing fields Campus Rec has around campus. These fields offer different outdoor fields and courts to play tennis, football, soccer, basketball, rugby, lacrosse and beach volleyball.

Looking for something fun to do with a group on a warm day? The Illini Grove in Urbana offers a great chance to do some outdoor grilling while enjoying a game of basketball or sand volleyball. It can

be reserved for a group through campus recreation.

The Illinois Ice Arena offers fun activities to do when the months turn cold. The arena’s Olympic-sized is a great place to go on a date or just hang out with some friends and show off your skating moves, or lack thereof. Admission and skate rentals are rather cheap when you present your iCard.

There are also ice-skating lesson classes that the University offers, which can be a fun way to get rid of a few credit hours.

The arena is also home to the Illinois club hockey team, the University’s highest-ranking team since there is no varsity team on campus. Playing on Friday and Saturday nights, hockey games are a fun environment that’s hard to replicate elsewhere.

From the vulgar chants to the high-speed hits and goals, going to a hockey game is definitely something a University student should do at least once during their time in Champaign-Urbana.

So when there doesn’t seem like there’s anything to do on campus or you just need a break from looking at textbooks and PowerPoints, go check out one of the many fun things that campus recreation offers through the year, no matter where you are.

A

s I look back on my first year of college, which went by way too fast, I can think of all the great times that I had, the not-so-great times, and some of my mistakes. Of course, all of these outcomes, good or bad, add up to an incredibly unique experience and a great education in school and in many other aspects of life. I only wish that I could impart some advice to my former self based on what I have learned and experienced in my freshman year at the University of Illinois.

Many of these little tips will be intuitive, but that is the reason why they are so important. The first thing that I would tell myself is to be open-minded. Don’t be afraid to meet new people. The student body at the university is incredibly diverse, so be inclusive.

Don’t be afraid to go up and talk to people because everyone else is the same position as you are. Be extra outgoing during the first couple of weeks, if your school schedule permits it, because this will be a great time to not only get to know the campus better, but also to get to know the other students better.

for meeting people because everyone is so eager to make new friends, but don’t be discouraged if you haven’t found a good group of friends after the first few weeks. There will be plenty of other opportunities to meet people as long as you are open to them.

Get involved on campus as early as possible. Sign-up for everything that sounds interesting on Quad Day and actually talk to the students in the booths to get a better idea of their organizations. For example, in my case, I joined the Daily Illini on a whim, assuming that I might like it because I enjoy writing.

I soon found that there was a lot more to it than just the writing, including interviewing and meeting new people, gathering information on relevant events and figuring out how to coordinate my schedule appropriately. I was writing a story on the Homecoming 5K, and I decided that I might as well participate in the race. It was a lot of fun and I probably would have never heard about it had I not been writing for the Daily Illini.

I have learned that the more you delay things and put off opportunities, saying, “I’ll do it next semester,” the less likely it is that you will actually do them in the end. I would say that my favorite and most memorable experiences from first semester were a result of spontaneity. If people were going out or if I heard about some organized activity somewhere, I would just go. Even if I

Freshman year was a time of learning and exploration for me. I grew as a person and learned a lot about myself in the process.

One last piece of advice that I would offer is to be yourself. Stick to your values and don’t conform if you don’t want to. Your freshman year will set the precedent for the rest of

your college career and likely for the rest of your independent adult life. Try new things, don’t be afraid to go outside your comfort zone, take advantage of opportunities while you still have them, and learn to take responsibility over your own life.

tudying is one of most time-consuming pastimes students partake in at the University. Many students hit the books at the Undergraduate Library, the Union or the Main Quad but those places can get crowded quickly. Here are five alternative study spots on campus that are just as good and don’t make you feel cramped while you cram.

Funk (ACES) Library

On the east side of the South Quad stands an octagonal building with plenty of windows to let in the sunlight. Named after the Funk Family who largely contributed to the University, the library is open to public until 10 p.m. and to students until 3 a.m. With four open floors, the library is spacious, and study rooms are available for students to reserve.

Grainger Engineering Library

If you’re looking to venture a little farther out for your studies, Grainger is a great place to start. Pillars line the reading room where many students flip through their notes and textbooks underneath the light of lamps on every table. Many students in Engineering might also find it beneficial to reference their large collection of engineering volumes and

The Psychology Building

You don’t need to be a psychology major to use the building’s facilities. Located at the corner of Sixth Street and Daniel Street, the beautiful greenery around the first floor of the psych building makes it a serene and peaceful place to study. Tables are set up around the lobby, and the area is extremely quiet to keep focused.

Business Instructional Facility (BIF)

BIF’s large common area provides an open space for open minds. The entire building is energy sustainable and has three-story floor to ceiling windows in the main commons.

Tables and couches are set up around the area for any student to use, and there is a coffee shop on the first floor.

Espresso Royale on Daniel Street

The dual-level café provides plenty of space for students to study without feeling overcrowded. The café is centrally located about a block away from the Main Quad and also has a friendly atmosphere for optimal low-stress studying. The background noise of the espresso machines and coffee grinders creates a calming atmosphere for those who would rather study with some white noise.

Campus restaurants to beat your Asian food cravings TIFFANY ZHANG Photo editor

he University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign may be in the middle of cornfields, hours away from any major city, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t unique food to be found. As an Asian-American student, I tend to gravitate towards the Asian restaurants on campus.

Here are some good places on campus:

Sakanaya

Sakanaya is known for their pricey dishes, but it’s definitely worth it. Their ramen comes to about $12 a bowl, but it’s more than enough to fill you up while being delicious at the same time.

Recommendation: Willis Tower, Tonkatsu Ramen Location: 403 E Green St, Champaign, IL 61820

Seoul Taco

This new Korean-Mexican place just opened in March, immediately dazzling the Chambana community with fusion foods that look good and taste even better. Go for the food and stay for the ambiance (cool wall murals).

Pho Cafe and Thai Kitchen

Pho doesn’t compare to some places in Chicago, but it’s the best you’ll find on campus. Their noodle soup dish is the perfect cure for a night out, and as an added bonus, the owners are super sweet. Sweet as the hoisin sauce they serve on the side.

Bap Plus

“BAP BAP BAP” is what I say when I walk in the door here. Translated literally, that means “rice rice rice” and that is what this place does best. When you’re craving some solid Korean food, hit up this spot.

Golden Harbor (Edge of Campus)

If you have to read this recommendation to convince you to go to Golden Harbor, you’re living your life wrong for not having been to this shining paragon of all that is beautiful in the world. This place is the peak of Olympus. Food of the gods. Go like their Facebook page; you won’t be disappointed.

Also, the menu is like 10,000 items long, no joke.

Recommendation: There are too many

good dishes, but their Fried Tofu should always be ordered.

Whether you call it milk tea, bubble tea, or PMT (pearl milk tea), this drink is a staple in Chinese culture. Milk tea is equivalent to coffee in the Asian world, and in my opinion, Asian desserts are known for being light and not too sweet, which applies to their drinks as well.

Chatime

What time is it? Ask a bilingual ChineseEnglish speaker who is thirsty, and they’ll tell you “Cha time!” Cha, for those uninitiated in the language, is “tea” in Chinese.

They’ll be right, though, because it’s always a good time to visit this popular bubble tea chain.
