You’ve just moved in to your dorm room and set up your desk just the way you like it.

You’ve got brand-new school supplies, a stack of crisp unopened paper and a roommate who has been on the phone for the last half-hour.

Studying in you dorm room is one of the least productive places to work. With your roommate going in and out, people blasting music next door and loud talking in the hallways, it can get difficult to concentrate. Here are a few alternate places on campus you can check out to get some work done.

Grainger Engineering Library

Open 24 hours, the engineering library is one of two options if you need to pull an all-nighter (the other being the Undergraduate Library).

With four floors and a basement, there are plenty of study spaces to choose from. If you want a bit more privacy, or want to hold a study session with friends, you can rent one of the study rooms out for a couple hours. The first floor also has an Espresso Royale if you need a coffee to keep you going.

Chemistry Library

While Grainger Engineering Library and the Undergraduate Library may be more popular places to study, the Chemistry Library is located right on the Main Quad inside the Noyes Laboratory. The space is on the smaller side but is quiet and close to where a lot of general education classes are held so you can study between classes.

If you don’t feel like traveling too far, most dorms will have either a study space or side lounge where you can get some work done.

These might not be the quietest option if you need silence to work, but if the weather is ugly or you just don’t want to go out, the dorm lounges will make for a good alternative. Some floors will also have a smaller lounge if you want something with less people than the downstairs lobby.

Like Starbucks, Einstein Bagels is located in the Illini Union. Not only do they serve bagels, pastries and breakfast food, Einstein Bagels also carried Caribou Coffee.

If you live near the Ikenberry Commons, stop by the Einstein Bagels stand located on the first floor of the Armory on your way to class. This is a great stop if you are in a rush and need caffeine fast.

Of all the coffee shops on campus, Caffe Paradiso is perhaps the most unique. Located in its own corner in Urbana, this coffeehouse is a cozy, homelike shop that makes the perfect environment for studying. Along with specialty coffees and flavors, Caffe Paradiso has great dessert option such as tiramisu, matchamisu, cakes and cookies.

Don't be afraid of making big changes

When I came to campus as a freshman, I was confident I would major in biochemistry. I would learn to live with my randomly assigned roommate at ISR, and the group of friends I made those first few weeks would be my friends for the next four years.

A part of the way through first semester, though, I realized how unhappy I was. My chemistry classes didn’t excite me, my roommate stressed me out and I didn’t feel like I could talk with any of my friends. Part of me assumed it was something I needed to tough out and adjust to because it would get better.

Around November, though, I decided to take a shot and change the things upsetting me. I switched my major to English. I put in a room-change request and moved to PAR. I met the people on my new floor and made

friends with them. Everything was different, and my life was better for it.

Sometimes when people start college, they have an idea in their head of what the next four years will look like. They know what they want to study, and they assume they are now locked into that field. I know when I changed majors, I felt guilty. I thought I had failed as a biochemistry major and was just taking the easy way out by switching to English. You might feel the same way, thinking it’s just something you have to power through.

In reality, your four years here at the University will be much more fulfilling and meaningful if you study something you love.

People often also have two misconceptions about roommates. First, you and your roommate will be best friends and do everything together. Second, if you don’t like your roommate, it’s necessary to just tough it out

because it’s just a part of life learning how to deal with people you don’t like.

Consider both of these myths debunked: You don’t have to be best friends with your roommate, and you don’t have to stick around if you’re having problems. Sometimes, going random or even finding a roommate on Facebook can end up really well, and you do find a friend for life. Other times, it’s just not a perfect fit. Your habits are incomparable, or your interests don’t match up. In that case, you can settle on just being roommates and getting through the year together. However, you don’t have to feel trapped into staying with someone if the room becomes a stressful place to be.

If your roommate makes you not want to ever be in your room, consider changing dorms. You should be comfortable in the place you’re living.

Part of that comfort also will come from the friends you surround yourself with. One of the most stressful parts of coming to college can be making friends. You can do this lots of ways: participating in RSOs, introducing yourself in class, joining Greek life and more. But if you find the people you started being friends with first semester aren’t who you thought they were, don’t be afraid to meet new people. On a campus this big, you’ll manage to find at least one group of friends who you’ll love just as much as your friends back home.

College is time for a lot of changes in your life. Don’t be afraid when something isn’t working out like you hoped. You are always able to switch it up as you go along and figure out what’s right for you. eis3@dailyillini.com

Take some time to escape campus

The offerings of the University of Illinois campus are endless. There are so many clubs to join, unique classes to explore, new friends to make and special events to attend.

But sometimes, campus life can also feel overwhelming. The days move by quickly, and while campus offers so many opportunities, it’s easy to get caught up in the stress of academics and your social life. That’s why it’s important to take some time to get away from campus and explore what the cities of Champaign-Urbana have to offer every once in a while.

Both communities are vibrant, with many different dining and entertainment offerings not enough students take advantage of. The pace of life always feels a bit slower, so escaping downtown means a chance to take a breath and get outside of the Campustown bubble.

Some students choose not to leave campus simply because they don’t know how. C-U’s bus system, the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District, is easy to understand and can take students all around campus and the surrounding areas. There are lines that run to the downtown areas of Champaign and Urbana and other neighboring areas which students can access via their mobile app and website. Just make sure

you take your I-card along since you’ll need to present it to the bus driver once you’re off campus.

In downtown Champaign, students can get away from the dining hall and Green Street fast food with dining options like soup, sliders and sandwiches at Seven Saints, chicken at Watson’s Shack and Rail and American fare at Big Grove Tavern. While all these options are slightly more expensive than what you’ll find at the heart of Green Street, they’re still reasonable for a fun outing with friends to celebrate a special occasion or when you have family or friends in town.

Downtown Champaign also hosts The Art Theater on Church Street which offers a variety of film events including national releases as well as a variety of special events that allow students and locals access to unique film opportunities they might not get anywhere else. Tickets are reasonably priced, so it’s a great option for students who are interested in frequenting the movies and seeing films but might not be sure what their options are on campus.

Champaign and Urbana also offer many different opportunities for students to attend live music events. Venues like the City Center and Virginia Theatre in downtown Champaign and the Canopy Club right off campus in Urbana

host a variety of national, regional and touring acts. You can catch local and student bands at venues like Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center and The Iron Post in Urbana.

Social media is a great way to learn about the different shows happening off campus, so be sure to use that resource if you want to stay in the loop.

think the offerings of campus have to be the end-all, be-all of your experience. We are so lucky to have such an exciting campus culture, and we should take full advantage of every part of it, but it’s good to get away sometimes and explore the culture of the surrounding cities.

Make new friends in college easily most majors and career paths; you just have to be active in your search.

One of the most stressful parts of coming into college as a freshman is the process of making new friends. This is probably one of the first times in your life you’ve had a completely fresh start, and it’s completely rational to be nervous.

Unless you ended up going to the same school as your high school best friends (which is unlikely), you are likely pretty anxious about this part of the new transition.

Have no fear: Almost all of the other freshman are feeling the exact same as you. Here are the tips and tricks you need to find your niche within the University of Illinois social scene.

Leave your door open at your dorm One of the easiest ways to open yourself up to new friendships starts at your new home. As the most stereotypical way to make friends in your freshman year dorm, leaving your door open has some truth behind it. It gives you the opportunity to meet new people without having to go too far out of your way to interact with others.

A really convenient — and helpful — way to make friends is through sitting next to new people in your classes. Not only does it give you a chance to find new people to study with, but you also have a common connection with those people to start with: the class. Even though it can be intimidating at first to sit down next to a new person and start a conversation, it will most often pay off in the long run. More likely than not you will have these people in the same classes throughout your college career, so it will give you the chance to meet some new familiar faces.

No matter what route you go to make friends, make sure you’re putting yourself out there and being authentic. On one last note, remember most other freshmen are feeling the same nerves as you, and thinking about this will make the first move a lot less intimidating.

RSOs provide valuable experiential learning

I am a self-proclaimed compulsive over-joiner.

I say I’m “interested” in more Facebook events than I could ever go to. If I see a bulletin board, I have to stop to take pictures of flyers that will inevitably get lost in the cloud. You can imagine my overstimulation at Quad Day, where I join dozens of RSOs’ email lists. Naturally, I spent the first few weeks of freshman year at numerous introductory RSO meetings. Often, I attended that first meeting to satisfy a remote interest I had or out of respect for a friend’s brother’s parent’s recommendation.

I seriously considered joining the rowing team and the mock trial team. I rushed business fraternities and applied to consulting groups. I also wandered into Gregory Hall one day and listened to students talk about the campus newspaper.

Little did I know how becoming a staff writer at The Daily Illini would prompt me to switch majors and ultimately change my career path.

My extracurriculars have provided me with out-of-classroom, hands-on experiences that are equally as valuable as traditional classroom instruction. Not only that, but joining these organizations have also allowed me to grow a personal and professional network of like-minded individuals.

For incoming students, consider joining orga-

Ultimately, college is a time for personal and professional self-exploration. We sit in lecture and study for tests to apply that knowledge in real-world environments. RSOs can provide experiential learning arguably more reflective of industry. RSOs can also simply be a way to meet people with similar interests.

Before college, I remember thinking Greek life was so loud at the University, saturating social media and drowning out other organizations. I have since come to realize how sororities and fraternities are just other avenues to find your place on campus with their own social and professional networking benefits.

Stay healthy to avoid 'freshman 15'

Everyone’s college experience is different.

Some students gain 20 pounds while other lose it. So why is the “freshman 15” still a popular myth we’re constantly warned about at graduation parties?

It is easy to gain weight in college. Many late nights are spent studying, a lot of times with groups. Almost every student can tell you they have a go-to snack for studying, and it’s often unhealthy. Living in the dorms gives students all the opportunity to indulge in late-night snacking. Dining retail locations such as 57 North and Busey Bean and Green are open until midnight and sell things like chips, candy, baked goods and soda. Only every once in a while will you find fruit or vegetables at these locations. When students get the food, they often ignore the nutrition facts panel and eat several servings without even knowing.

Here are some ways to avoid the freshman 15.

Credits are a curse in disguise

If you’re living in University Housing, many upperclassmen will tell you to get the 10/45 meal plan because you get 45 credits a week you can use at those dining retail locations.

However, I recommend the 12/15 meal plan because it forces you to go to the dining hall to eat, which usually has way more healthy options compared to the other locations.

You’ll still have credits, but just 15 a week. If you let them accumulate after the first week, the credits you haven’t used will roll over so you’ll end up having about 30 a week. Having to eat in the dining hall will prevent late night snacking and will inspire you to eat more meals than snacks overall.

Exercise … obviously This goes without saying, but you need to stay active to stay healthy. Many freshman come into the University after spending years playing sports and let fitness get away from them. While there are several gyms and recreation centers on campus, getting the motivation to go can be difficult. The ARC is one of the country’s largest on-campus recreation centers, and I recommend taking advantage of it. I recommend buying a group fitness pass which gives you unlimited access

Help your homesick kid with these tips

Every parent pictures dropping off their kid at college just like in the movies: You leave them with their cookie-cutter roommate, and as you wave goodbye, you watch them head off toward the Main Quad to go throw around a frisbee.

No parent wants to think their happy kid will suffer from homesickness, but it’s important to know what to do if instead of them waving goodbye to you with a smile, the wave is accompanied with tears.

Homesickness is something no one thinks could happen to them or their child, but when it hits, it hits hard.

While you’re still there

If the homesickness starts to creep up on your student before you’ve even unpacked the entire car on move-in day, try to get them thinking about other things. If want to be encouraging and tell them how much fun they’ll have at college, that’s fine, but try not to dwell on this. Instead, try to take it a little bit at a time and keep the conversation light: Talk to them about how they want the room organized or how you can go grocery shopping once you’re done unpacking. Another helpful tip if they’re starting to get really overwhelmed is to plan a weekend you’re going to come visit or when they can come home for in the near future. It gives them something to look forward to and some motivation to make it through the first few weeks.

The first week of school

Start getting prepared for a few tearful phone calls consisting of your kid bargaining with you on what jobs they could get without a college degree and begging you to buy them a ticket for the bus home for the weekend. Make sure they know you’re there for them, this is the first week for them and change is hard. A good way for them to know you’re thinking of them is to send them some cookies or their favorite snack, and let them know they have a package coming so they have something to look forward to.

After a few weeks

begging to come home, you’re going to need a different approach. You can always encourage them to go to the Counseling Center. That way they have someone they can talk out how they’re feeling. You should also encourage your student to join new groups and activities; it’ll get them going somewhere and hopefully help them make some new friends.

Overall, college can be very intimidating, and everyone gets a little homesick once in a while. Make sure to have a plan in case your child finds themselves feeling too far away from home.

Try to keep reminding them things will get better, and hopefully college will become their best four years.

Make late-night cravings a healthier choice

Being in college allows students to have their first taste of freedom away from parents and (almost) living like an adult. Living on your own also means making decisions about what you should and shouldn’t eat, and sometimes latenight cravings can get the best of you. However, when you really want something heavy and greasy, microwave popcorn doesn’t cut it. It’s unrealistic to think you won’t ever indulge at 2 a.m., so here’s a list of some late-night eats on campus with alternative, healthier options.

Fat Sandwich

A double cheeseburger with chicken and mozzarella sticks may sound like the perfect poststudy (or post-KAM’s) meal at the moment, but it most likely won’t make you feel great the next day. This is the end of an era for your parents too

When I arrived at Wassaja Hall in August 2017, I had just about had it with my family. After a three-hour-long car ride in my family’s minivan, crammed between my siblings, a bike and not a few suitcases of clothes, I was ready to run into my dorm without a single glance thrown over my shoulder. The summer had been long.

I felt ready to live my own independent life, parents be damned. Underneath all of that teenage angst and frustration, though, was the reality facing me as I stepped into the Ikenberry Commons for the first time: I was frighteningly alone.

Tensions always run high on move-in day.

Everyone is trying to go somewhere and somehow manages to be an inconvenience to every other person trying to walk through the suddenly too-small dorm lobby. As a freshman, I was very self-conscious. I walked the halls on that first day trying to look cool but open so as to attract friends. I wanted to seem erudite but not disparaging. Attractive, but not superficial (yes, I see the irony now). I tried to preserve this balancing act, a feat that would make Cirque du Soleil proud, as far away from my parents as possible.

That was my mistake: an inevitable one, but an error nonetheless. As a freshman, it’s hard to escape the ever-present weight of what feels

Instead of pushing forward, pause and take a look around you.

These are the people who have watched you grow, fail and succeed. They are the ones who stood by with pride in their eyes as you walked across the stage of your high school auditorium to receive your diploma. They may drive you insane, but they deserve a moment of gratitude as they cope with your looming absence.

My mom wishes she knew this before I came to college

Going to college is nerve-wracking for tons of reasons and not only for students.

My parents were just as nervous – if not more – than I was when first coming to the University in the fall of 2017. But, lucky for you, they’ve learned a thing or two since then, and I’m going to share a few of their tips and tricks below.

Your kids have a lot of stuff

My parents were surprised and extremely annoyed when my belongings took over the house during the packing process. Your student will likely be bringing to school duplicates of things they already have at home: bedspreads, toiletries, desk lamps, you name it.

To avoid such a messy catastrophe, try to clear up some space in your home and designate it as your student’s packing area.

Send your student gifts to let them know you're there

Everyone knows college can be draining, mentally and physically. There’s no better pick-me-up, however, than a package from home. It’s always nice to know people at home are thinking about us and rooting for our success.

Receiving anything at all is wonderful, but the following seven items will really make your students’ weeks.

1. You can never go wrong with good, old-fashioned money. Not only are courses expensive, but socializing is, too. From going out to dinner to escape rooms to coffee breaks to really any college-town activity, going out with friends can get expensive.

A little bit of green every once in a while is certain to put a smile on your stressed student’s face.

2. If you’re afraid your cash will be spent as cover at one of the campus bars, maybe a gift card is a great number two. Find out which restaurant your student frequents on campus, and send them their next meal on you. Or give them some spending money for their favorite department store, perfect for their next trip to the mall.

3. Food from home is a fantastic way to remind your student how much you love them. Especially for those living in dorms, this is one of the best things to send them as dining hall food can get insipid and dull after a few months. Some homemade cookies are always nice to augment our diets of ramen and pizza.

4. A short, handwritten letter or encouraging note can go a long way toward keeping your student motivated. Words from loved ones are sure to make your student feel appreciated and their hard work recognized. These are particularly nice during the bloodbath of finals week or even during the sleepless midterm season.

5. An obviously thought-out gift is always a pleasure to receive. Send your student something you know they’ll love: a book,

card game, accessory, jewelry, you name it.

If your student collects it, add to their collection. Any and all distractions are sure to be welcomed.

6. Toiletries are constantly in need of replenishing, and the cost can really eat away at a college student’s budget. Shouldering some of the financial burden or saving your student the walk to Walgreens lets them know they don’t have to be completely

independent — yet.

7. If you know your student’s size, clothing can be a refreshing gift. It’s always nice to have a new shirt to wear out, a new piece for the wardrobe that has gotten stale and predictable. If your kid sends you Snapchats of themselves in the same ratty T-shirt and jeans every day, perhaps it’s time to send them a little care package to diversify their clothing options.

If you’re sending your student something, you’re already halfway to the parent of the year award. Trust me when I say all packages are thoroughly enjoyed. By sending your student any of these listed items, you’re sure to get calls home thanking you for your troubles.

Remind your student to take care of themself doing their own laundry. Make sure to remind them what clothes they have need to be hang dried and what clothes need to be washed separately. They might do this at the beginning of the year, but as the year moves on and they start to get a little lazier, a good reminder from mom or dad will help them stay on track.

It’s no secret college is a big investment.

Going to class at 9 a.m. on a Friday may seem like an easy feat when the semester first begins, but eventually it becomes all too easy to hit snooze a few too many times after a long night.

New students need to keep in mind the main motivator behind coming to college is getting an education, and with all the glittering new buildings dotting campus and numerous organizations and resources, there are so many things to explore! Get your money’s (or your parent’s money’s) worth by making use of these helpful hints.

Actually go to class Sure, it may seem harmless to skip out on a day of lecture when attendance isn’t mandatory and you know you can get the notes from the friend whose name you don’t know, but there’s more damage to be done than you think.

Let’s break it down. The cost of in-state tuition for a semester is $6,018, so a single class that meets three times a week for a student who is taking 15 credit hours costs roughly $27. Think about that waste of investment when you don’t want to get out of bed.

Whether your student is leaving home for their freshman year or their senior year, they are bound to need your help when they come across an unfamiliar task or situation because honestly, none of us listened to any of the great advice you’ve given us. You’re sure to get a phone call (or 12) every couple of days when your student is really stumped. Here’s what you can expect.

“Where do I put the laundry detergent in the washing machine?”

For the students who never touched a load of laundry growing up, learning how to do it on their own in an unfamiliar place might be a difficult task. If I had a dollar for every time the washing machines in my dorm freshman year were flooded or broken because someone couldn’t load it properly, I would have been

able to afford to send my dirty laundry home every week.

“What medicine should I take to make this go away?”

In college, your students are exposed to many people every single day, and they’re bound to get sick at some point. Their entire lives, Mom and Dad have been there to take care of them when this happens, but now your student is alone and chances are they have no idea what remedies to use for a cold, flu or headache.

“How long do I cook this for?”

If your student is living in their own house or apartment for the first time this year, they will be cooking for themselves more often than when they lived in the dorms. Recipes only take us so far, so expect phone calls every time your student attempts to make something new and it goes horribly wrong.

Be humble to avoid being a 'know-it-all'

If you’ve ever been alive on planet Earth, chances are you’ve encountered those people who think they know everything. They raise their hands in class every second available to make themselves sound like intellectuals, like they only want the best for themselves and like they don’t care about the emotions of others around them. And guess what? There are so many of them on campus regardless of the major you’re in!

The “know-it-all” behavior is overall detrimental as it discourages others from doing their best and creates a rift between wholesomeness and being a complete jerk. To ensure you don’t become one of those people, there are a few things that you should avoid saying and doing to be humble and live out your fullest college experience.

Don’t say a class is too easy

We get it! You’re smart ... just like everybody else who got into the University. Some people will go to lengths up telling you they got over 100% in the class, even though you never asked. Not every class is going to be easy for everyone, and you’re giving people an excuse to slack off and not do anything.

While you’re here, treat every class like it’s going to be hard and you’ll be fine. If people ask you if a class is hard, tell them if they’re able to do the work, they’ll be fine, too.

Don’t ask people what they got on a test

This question should be translated to “I want to know if I did better than you to help my ego.” Unless it’s a really good friend or someone who you can trust without them judging you, it’s not their business to know what you got on the test. If anyone asks you, respond with “I did well” or “I didn’t do as well as I wanted.” Your grades should be a personal matter between you, your friends (to an extent) and your parents.

Exercise boundaries in lecture and discussion

It’s totally acceptable to share your insights in class, and I admire those who are capable of doing that in a class with hundreds of people; however, there’s a fine line between trying to expand your learning and coming off as a complete smart aleck. Some people love to hear their voices and seem to blurt out whatever sounds “smart,” even though they have no idea what’s happening in the class. I’ve been in classes where people will go out of their way to correct professors even though it turns out that person was wrong in the first place. Don’t talk unless you have something useful to say.

Don’t look down on others for their choice in major

The beauty of people in this world is we’re all individuals. This reflects in the career paths we choose, and it’s disingenuous to write off people’s goals in life as “subpar.”

This is something I see a lot as a STEM major.

People in my major think if you’re not majoring in STEM, then what else is there in life?

Believe it or not, there’s a lot! There’s a place for everyone in this world, and just because someone has a different perspective on life doesn’t mean they’re lesser. Whatever your major is, you do you!

Don’t complain about getting a 90% on a test.

This is something you probably heard in high school, and it never leaves. People don’t seem to realize this, but unless you’re a super genius, you’re not going to always get perfect scores. People also don’t realize it may not be their personal best on a test, but there are some around them who are getting worse grades. This is especially true in college because it’s a stressful place for everyone.

Complaining about a near-perfect or amazing score is fruitless, and some people want to brag and make others feel poorly about their work. Keep it to yourself.

Perfect your study habits

The one thing most college students can agree about regarding high school is college is different in that professors are more lenient. The one thing to note, however, is studying for exams is way more time-consuming, intensive and confusing than the tests we were given in high school. On the bright side, at least in my experience, once you’ve taken one test for a class, you’ve taken them all. This means the most important thing you can do to be successful in a class is to perfect your study habits before it’s too late. Here are the steps you can take to get it right the first time.

Use your resources Talk to friends who have taken the class before or go on Reddit and Rate My Professor for advice on how to study for the class. If you know how the tests are set up previous to taking them you can find the best way to study. Whether that’s rewriting your notes, making flashcards or annotating the readings, if you can gauge how detailed the tests are and what they’re primarily based off of, it’ll make you time studying more efficient.

Consider your needs beforehand

Not only is environment important, but so are the supplementary aids students rely on. If coffee makes you anxious and unfocused, try green tea (which has more caffeine than a cup of a coffee, without the crash). If you need to have snacks nearby to keep you focused, don’t spend your entire night at the Undergraduate Library with virtually no food nearby.

Give yourself time This doesn’t mean you have to spend a half hour a day studying for an exam two weeks before the test, but this does mean being honest with yourself and estimating how much time it’ll take you to get through the material. Procrastination is inevitable, but this doesn’t have to ruin your grades.

If you’re the type of person that waits until the last moment to study, using your resources to cut out studying unnecessary information is the most important step of this perfecting your study habits.

Don’t get discouraged if you don’t know what you need from the get-go. Most high schools don’t take the time to teach students how to study for tests, which means you’ll likely have trouble gauging the best methods for each class until at least the second exam. Understand freshman classes account for this, and you’ll be OK by midterms if you put in the effort. Persevere, and good luck with exams!

A bike is a necessity

The University of Illinois campus is a massive one to navigate. Most people prefer to walk it because it is the easiest form of transportation; however, the University also provides other options like the intuitive ChampaignUrbana Mass Transit District system, Veorides and soon-to-be-introduced Veo e-bikes.

While these options are great, having a personal bike is the most optimal way to traverse Campustown. Having a bike is much faster than any type of alternative mode of transportation on campus.

Buses must follow a certain path and can get crowded during peak hours, but with a bike, you can craft your own personal route that usually cuts a couple minutes from commute times.

Veorides are convenient, but you do have to pay a fee every time you use it and go through the app. Having a bike cuts the middleman and allows you to have complete control of when you want to leave.

Albeit involving a slight investment, the returns are just too valuable to ignore. This semester, I had to get from the Armory to the Siebel Center for Computer Science in about five minutes. I have tested using the bus and

walking, and both methods ended up with me being at least 10 minutes late. Biking was the only method that got me there in time just because I could leave right away can cut through places like the Main Quad.

Aside from the convenience and cuts to commute time, there are many other benefits to having a bike on campus. One of the most significant ones is the aerobic workout you get from biking. On a normal day for me, I usually bike about five miles each day just getting from one place to another. This might be a small workout in the grand scheme of things, but with the constant stress of work, clubs and even friends, it can be hard to find time to maintain your physical health.

Biking is a lifestyle change that can have a massive impact on your overall mental health as well. There have been many times where I have been stressed over an assignment, test or essay, and biking served as a type of mental therapy. I usually like to walk to de-stress, but biking seems more cathartic to me.

It is nice to kind of forget about life stress for a couple of minutes and get lost in the headwind and enjoy the things you see, like people, trees and many other things UI’s campus has to offer. My favorite spot to go to in a pinch is the gardens at the Japan House. It is such a

separation from our fast-paced life, and I get to breathe and really take in my surroundings without the white noise of cars or people. I would not be able to get there without a bike because the bus would not be convenient enough for me to drop in.

and the fun of biking makes having a bike a necessity if you want to experience campus fully.

Oh, and they give you some buttered bread to go with it too (perfect for dipping in the sauce). Plus, the service and staff is second to none. I might actually go there today for lunch!

Don't be afraid to ask for help

Whether it’s for getting help on an assignment, asking where a classroom is or seeking help to get through a difficult time from the Counseling Center, it’s important to know what resources you have and to know it is normal to need some assistance while going through major life changes.

Personally, I am someone who will do anything I can to not ask for help. I value my independence and often view myself as weak if I reach out for help, but here’s the catch. When someone comes to me for advice or help, I don’t view them as weak at all and do everything I can to help that person. Asking for help doesn’t diminish my independence, and it won’t diminish yours either.

Coming to college is hard. I don’t think anyone will sit you down and tell you how easy life is or was in college. Sure, college may be more appealing to those who think they’re now just stuck at a nine-to-five, but you’ll still face difficult situations with classes, homework, your social life and probably many other things. It’s important to keep in mind the resources available to you when you encounter these situations. Lots of resources are and can be provid-

ed by the University (aka it’s in your tuition) and other resources you can get just by being a person (aka for free).

First and foremost, call your parents. At this point, my mom gets suspicious if I call her or she calls me and I tell her everything is fine.

Chances are there’s always something bothering me, even if it’s the dumbest, smallest thing in the world, like someone keeping eye contact with me for too long when walking down the street. Your mom or other parent will want to hear about how you’re doing and help you through whatever it is you’re going through, big or small.

The Counseling Center is also available for you to utilize. Around 30 counselors are available and have been hired and trained to listen and help you through difficult situations.

College may be the first time you seek assistance for your mental health and maybe do not know where to go or how to help yourself through it. The beauty of the Counseling Center is there are many resources there that won’t make you feel alone, and they are specifically there for you.

Something your parents and the Counseling Center may not be able to help you through, though, is academics. There will come a time

when a class workload starts to become too much or the content of a course starts to get really confusing. (And if this doesn’t end up happening to you, please tell me what classes and major you’re in because I would love to switch into that.) This is where the easiest solution comes in: Ask your professors, teaching assistants or tutors. All of your professors will have office hours where they will do nothing but wait for students to come in with ques-

tions. Take advantage of this; teaching or helping you is your professors’ jobs.

There’s no doubt you’ll face some difficulties in college. If you don’t, then I should be taking advice from you, but when it comes down to it, just always keep this in mind: It’s OK to ask for help every once in a while. sjboyle2@dailyillini.com

Save money in college with these tricks, tips

You’re a college student, so there’s a high chance you’re either broke or close to it. Your parents aren’t funding all your endeavors anymore, and especially not your nights out.

All hope is not lost, though; you’ve made it this far off of your barely subsisting budget, so you’re obviously doing something right.

To help you take full advantage of all the bargain hunting that awaits you out in the real world and to avoid mismanaging your money like I did when I first got to college, I have compiled some of my best tips I’ve learned through experience. Familiarize yourself with them so you can dodge the worst hidden spending traps for college students.

Rent used textbooks

With a new semester comes new classes and a huge bill for all the textbooks you might not even crack open. Instead of purchasing brand new textbooks in waves twice a year, rent out used textbooks. They’re significantly cheaper and at the end of the semester, you return it, so you don’t have to worry about selling them and losing money on your investment.

Make a budget

You can tell yourself time and time again you’ll be good this week and won’t spend any money, but you and I both know that’s not true. Building a budget is a handy way to hold yourself accountable for your spending habits and to keep track of what exactly you’re spending money on so you can adjust accordingly. Though they tend to fall under the radar, student discounts — often around 10% — are offered at a plethora of stores, including those pertaining to retail, school supplies, food and even travel.

Some larger businesses that offer these include Apple, Buffalo Wild Wings, PBTeen, Topshop, Urban Outfitters, Nike, Under Armour and Vineyard Vines, but there are many other companies that boast these deals as well, so do a little research to get the best bang for your buck at your favorite stores.

Eat out less

Limit how often you go out to eat to save yourself $10, not to mention the greasy calories. Take up cooking and get creative so you look forward to meals every day. Keep trying out new things and looking for inspiration so you don’t get bored.

If you really must go out, pick one day to go out to eat with your friends per week. It’ll give you all time to catch up, and it’ll be more special because you go out less frequently.

Stay in touch with friends from home

Even if you’ve literally been best friends since you were in diapers, when you get to college you will really need to work at keeping in touch with your home friends to make those friendships last.

Don’t panic. College doesn’t have to signify the end of your home friendships. I won’t lie to you: There will be some friends you had before college that were wonderful great people, but as the years go on, the texts will get less frequent and you’ll find yourself Instagram-stalking their new boyfriend. However, there are friendships meant to last forever even being miles away, but all friendships could use a little help. Here are some tips for staying in touch no matter how far you are away from your home friends.

Keep the group chat active

Even if it’s just to send a funny meme or tell your home friends you just aced a tough calculus quiz, it’ll help keep your friendships going. I especially recommend sending updates about your lives every few weeks just to keep up! You’re all at school joining different clubs, taking different classes and making different memories, so make sure to ask about what your friends are

Be understanding

Try not to flip out on your best friend if you haven’t heard from her in a day or two. Of course, check in with them to make sure everything with them is OK, but understand college gets crazy busy. Just because they can’t talk to you right then doesn’t mean they don’t miss and love you.

Make fun plans over break

If you’re balling on a budget like most college students, I would suggest sending some cute animal or funny postcards to your friends. Everyone loves getting mail, and when they get a surprise from you, it’ll mean a lot to them. If you have a little more cash at your disposal, you can even look into sending them pre-made care packages for them. No matter your budget though, your friends will really appreciate you thinking about them, and it will help your friendships stay strong.

All in all you might not talk to your home friends every single day, but that doesn’t mean anything has to change between your friendships just because you aren’t at the same school anymore. If anything, you might find your friendships with your home friends will become even stronger. You’re no longer friends just because you see each other everyday in high school, but your choosing your friendships despite the distance.

Make the most of it when you and all your home friends are back during the different breaks. While it’s fun to relax and watch T.V. with them, make sure to also plan something fun together to make new memories. Try an escape room, or go somewhere for a nice dinner. That kellymj@dailyillini.com
