Kindness is key
BY MOLLY ZUPAN SPECIAL SECTIONS EDITOR
A few weeks ago, I was at a restaurant with my parents, sister and her boyfriend. While we were eating, a woman walked by and dropped something on the floor. She kept walking, unaware of what she had left behind. I got up, picked up her belonging and brought it over to her table. I tapped her on the shoulder, and said, “Excuse me, you dropped this while you were walking.” Without even looking at me, she snatched the item from my hand and did not say a word. I was shocked and actually a little hurt. I immediately walked away and saw the expression on my sister’s face that read, “What just happened?” I sat back down and my sister said, “I can’t believe that lady just did that.” Although this rude incident was fairly minuscule, and my first and only interaction with this woman, I still felt really upset. I was confused and a bit mad at myself for acting so maturely. I wanted to grab what she had dropped and throw it in the trash. But I didn’t. I sat down with my family and my parents said things like, “You did the right thing,” “Don’t let that bother you,” and “She might’ve just been preoccupied and didn’t realize what she had done.” I took all of this into consideration. There are times when I’m a bit stressed and I’m not fully attentive to my surroundings. But then I really thought about it and I realized I consistently think about how my actions impact the people around me.
BERCHAM KAMBER THE DAILY ILLINI
At this point, I was so pissed. She could have at least said, “Thank you,” or smiled at me or something. I did her a favor and she gave me nothing. She was a stranger at the beginning of our interaction and she remained a stranger at the end of it. This ridiculously rude interaction has been on my mind for days and I understand why. I was raised to treat everyone with kindness and to be aware of the feelings of others. Believe me, I’m not perfect at all, but I do my absolute best to make sure kindness is a qual-
ity people see in me through my actions and words. This is something that I have carried with me for as long as I can remember and I brought it with me to college. I have been a student at the University for two years and I have encountered so many incidents similar to the one I described above, but the interactions are typically pleasant. If I bump into someone on Green Street I say, “Sorry.” If someone needs a pencil in class, I offer my uncanny collection of Ticonderogas. And if someone nearby drops some-
thing, I pick it up and kindly hand it to them and they say, “Thank you.” During your years on this campus, be kind to everyone around you. Life can be absolutely crazy and stressful and everything in between, but that is no excuse to treat others poorly. Embrace the University, the other students around you, this opportunity to learn, live and love, and carry kindness with you along the way. Molly is a junior in FAA. mollyz2@dailyillini.com
Five things to take part in this fall
BY JESSICA BURSZTYNSKY
MANAGING EDITOR FOR REPORTING
Coming in to Champaign-Urbana as a freshman can be intimidating. Flyers, free bags and countless other things are thrown into your arms every time you step outside. With so many things going on, it can be hard to figure out what to do. As I head into my last semester, I’m going to revisit a few of my favorite moments and things to do in the fall. 1. Take a photo with Alma Mater If you haven’t done this already, your Instagram will thank you now and then it will thank you again in about four years. You’ll feel like a true Illini and have something wholesome to send to your parents. Also, it’ll be fun to take a first- and last-day-of-
school photo with Alma to see how much you’ve grown after 60-plus credit hours!
2. Visit the apple orchard Or attend any other October Lovers’ (a real registered student organization) activities. Fall in central Illinois can be a beautiful thing. Grab some of your new dorm friends, put on your flannel and head to Curtis Apple Orchard to get apple cider donuts and go through a corn maze. It’ll truly make you feel like you’re in Illinois and it’s a great (and easy) way to get off of campus on a Saturday. 3. Go to a football game and tailgate in Grange Grove Let me start this out by saying I do not understand football. However, I do under-
stand being with friends and eating a hot dog in the newly-renovated Grange Grove. Sure, going to Block with your Greek life friends on Saturday mornings can be fun, but there truly is something special about actually going to the football game instead of standing in a packed bar at 11 a.m. Even if football isn’t your thing, take a morning off and go support the Illini. Also, be sure to go when there are free tickets for students (which are sent to your student email). 4. Go to Quad Day Quad Day gives you one of the most, “Wow, I’m in college!” feelings you can have. Several hundred people pack onto the Main Quad and gather all of the free stuff they can get. The general idea is to find a few RSOs you could be interested in join-
ing and sign up on their email list. Go, sign up for as many as you can and try them all out! It’s the perfect way to start off your fall semester and the rest of your four years here. 5. Participate in Homecoming Last year, I ran the Homecoming 5K and it’s one of my best memories from the fall. The course is at the Arboretum, so there are trees and small ponds, which make for some nice scenery. It helps that everyone dresses up in their best orange and blue spirit wear. If you’re still not feeling like Illinois is your home by October, this event will kick-start that. Jessica is a senior in Media. burszty2@dailyillini.com

Places to study that aren't the library BY RACHAEL BOLEK MANAGING EDITOR FOR ONLINE
If you’re like me, you also can’t get anything done when you study at home. No matter how much I try, if I work on something for a class while at my desk or on my bed, I either fall asleep or inevitably put my homework down and turn on Netflix. Luckily, I have recognized my inability to be productive at home, so whenever possible, I make it a point to go elsewhere to get my assignments done. One problem with this is I don’t particularly like studying at libraries, either. They’re always crowded, and it’s a struggle trying to find a spot to yourself at libraries. For this reason, I’ve spent the majority of my time studying at locations across campus. Here are a few of my favorites I’ve found in my past three years at the University. Coffeehouses The first place many people think of as a place to study is the nearest coffeehouse. I’ve spent many hours in places like Starbucks, Espresso Royale and Hammerhead Coffee finishing assignments. If you like to have a bit of noise in the background while you work, these are some great options. Starbucks and Espresso Royale have many locations on campus, so you can find the one closest to you. The Starbucks on Green Street is typically more crowded, but the one near the Krannert Center on Oregon Street often has more open tables. Many of these places close around 10 p.m., so make sure to check each coffeehouse’s hours before heading over. This may not be the best late-night option, but if you need to do work during the day, I highly recommend any of these coffeehouses.

Best off-campus study spots
PHOTO EDITOR
Before you know it, your first midterm is going to come around and you will find yourself walking up and down aisles at the library trying to find an open table. If you are like me and can’t focus on studying in overcrowded environments, try some offcampus spots that are geared to boost your productivity. All of these spots are accessible by bus, but it certainly doesn’t hurt if you or a friend has a car to lessen the commute! Cafe Kopi — 109 N. Walnut St., Champaign The entire cafe is designed for people to get work done in it. The inside is divided in half, where you can order food and caffeine in one side and do work in the other. It has an entire wall of tea selections to choose from. I have been working down the list ever since I first visited and still have new teas to try! Every table has a cute vintage lantern as a light and power outlets underneath. The environment is warmly lit and it has various tapestries hanging on its walls. It is the ultimate cozy vibe to get some good studying done. It’s definitely my personal favorite! Flying Machine Avionics — 202 S. First St., Champaign
The little brother of the Flying Machine Coffee in Urbana that closed this spring, this location lacks nothing from its sibling. Its coffee is rich and delicious; so much so that I have always had a dessert to go with it. They make a mean poached egg salad, so definitely try that out on your first visit. They have a work area with tables and outlets on the side, perfect for studying with a couple of friends. Esquire Lounge — 106 N. Walnut St., Champaign

study session. Esquire has people constantly coming in with people for food and drinks, so it’s definitely not the quietest place to study. However, if you work well with ambient noise in the background, it will really help you tune out thoughts and concentrate. Plus, it has several pool tables inside so you have a method of releasing all that stress!

This library is absolutely beautiful; it has one of the most stunning architectural styles in Champaign. At this library, you are guaranteed to find a table, even during exam season. Along every wall and corner, there are

How to freshen up your style without leaving campus
BY MELISSA NIEMIEC
ASSISTANT SPECIAL SECTIONS EDITOR
Freshman year is a time when you come into your own personal style. You get complete control on what you want to wear and where you want to wear it. But, finding clothes to celebrate your new fashion choices can be a challenge. It’s no secret that when you’re a freshman on campus with no car and an unreliable knowledge of the bus system, campus can seem like an island. With the closest mall being a 30-minute bus ride away, it seems every shopping trip could turn into a chore. However, students have a few options when it comes to amping up their wardrobe without having to make a pilgrimage to the far reaches of Champaign. Shop online This may seem obvious to some, but when I arrived on campus my freshman year, I had never ordered an item online ever in my life. It’s safe to say I have been fully indoctrinated by now and have a growing online shopping addiction. But even if the average student is not an Amazon virgin as I was, many don’t realize the discounts and perks online stores offer students. Students can get Amazon Prime, a service that offers free shipping among other things, free for six months, and pay half price after that. ASOS, an online clothing retailer, offers a 10 percent off discount on all student purchases. With the app Pocket Points, you can earn points towards a multitude of different websites such as Puma, Lulus, and JCPenny. They are just the start on the discounts you can get as a student online. Shop on Green Street If you distrust buying clothes online, there are a few clothing stores right on campus. Ragstock, Apricot Lane and Urban Outfitters are all situated on Green Street, walking distance from most of campus. Ragstock has the cheapest selection of the three, selling both new and used clothing. They have a guys and girls section, and it is situated in the basement of Panda Express. Ragstock gets especially busy come Halloween season, as they stock a variety of new and used costumes for the holiday. Apricot Lane and Urban Outfitters are more upscale. Apricot Lane only sells women’s clothing, but tends to have discounts for Greek life on campus. Urban Outfitters is two stories and has a men’s and women’s section. Though their items can get a bit pricey, they also have a vast sales rack upstairs.

Shop in your roommate’s closet I’d like to emphasize that you should do this only with permission. Stealing clothes from your roomie tends to be a big no-no. However, if both of you become close enough that borrowing each other’s clothes is okay, it can really improve your outfit selection for free. It’s like doubling your wardrobe. You
know you’re both tired of your own clothes anyway, so swapping tops can be a mutually beneficial deal. If you’re roommate isn’t into the idea, you could also borrow clothes from friends. This is especially useful when you only need something for one night, or if you need it on short notice. College is a time to test your boundaries
and find out a little more about yourself. Changing up how you dress is a great way to reinvent your style and try new things. Though all-day trips to the mall can be fun, it’s also good to have ways to shop closer to home. Melissa is a junior in LAS. mn3@dailyillini.com

We’ve all heard the stories. The horror stories of showing up to college with the dreams and hopes of starting the best time of your life, only to find out you are randomly paired with a roommate who makes your life a living hell. It was stories like these that cast a shadow over the otherwise joyous day when it was finally my turn to pick out the dorm I would spend my freshman year in. As I scoured through the half-filled double rooms, I realized I have never shared a room with anyone in my life. And the prospect of sharing my personal space with a complete stranger made me anxious about what I will be facing in the near future. I spent hours looking through the names of people who could be my future roommate, hoping to find a clue that would point to the right decision. Time jumped ahead a few months to when I finally arrived on campus. I was both excited and nervous to meet the person behind the name I eventually decided on. My roommate walked in, all dressed in colorful summer clothing. She held out her hand with the biggest smile I’ve ever seen and said, “Hi, my name is Anna.”
It felt as if a huge rock that had been hanging slowly fell back into place in my stomach over the next few days, as I learned more and more about my new roommate Anna. Not only have we bonded over common interests and dislikes, but we also formed a relationship that can only be built over sharing our intimate living space. It didn’t take long before Anna and I became inseparable. Until this day, even though we no long live together, she is still one of my best friends in college and my freshman year would have lost a lot of hearty laughs and late-night talks without her. I lucked out with Anna, but I understand the roommate experience can vary greatly from person to person. However, don’t let the idea of living with a stranger get in your way of enjoying the dorm life. While most of us are used to having our own rooms and each of us will bring with us our own living habits, the lesson of how to get along with strangers who are different from what we are used to is an important one. It might not be easy, but it will be worth the time. Besides, it’s only a year.

Beautiful outdoor spots on campus
BY ANDREA FLORES LONGFORM EDITOR
It sounds incredibly cheesy, but the beauty on this campus never ceases to amaze me, even after three years here. When the weather is nice, I love to spend my days studying and hanging out with friends, soaking up as much sun as possible. I wasn’t always like that though. During my freshman year, I spent a lot of time shutin my dorm room, binge-watching Netflix in bed. As relaxing as those lazy days were, something I would change about my freshman year is how I spent my free time, and I would trade those lazy days for days spent in some of the most beautiful places on campus. Our campus has so much beautiful nature to offer. Here are some of my favorite outdoor locations that everyone needs to check out: The Main Quad, the South Quad, the Bardeen Quad, etc. Before you call me basic, have you ever stopped on your way to class, stood in the middle of any of these Quads and just soak it all in? Even though most of us rush through any of these Quads on a daily basis, these are locations that need to be taken advantage of when the sun is shining, whether you lay out a blanket and study with friends, bring a picnic for a first date or quietly enjoy a cup of coffee. I will definitely miss these spots when I’m no longer at Illinois, since they’re such a staple of our campus. The Arboretum in Urbana In sixth grade, I took a field trip to an arboretum in the Chicago suburbs and it was probably one of the lamest field trips I ever went on. But the arboretum in Urbana is the opposite. Campus can get fairly busy at times and the arboretum is one of my favorite places for some peace and quiet. And it’s pretty great to just be surrounded by trees

and nature; it’s a big change of pace compared to all the cornfields we’re surrounded by. The Japan House This is a must-stop location before graduation, especially in the springtime. When the cherry blossom trees bloom, it’s one of the most gorgeous sights I’ve encountered on campus. It’s also a cute place to visit if you want a new date location, as this place can be filled with couples. Or, if you want to come with friends and watch dates succeed (or fail) from afar, I would also suggest this.
Boneyard Creek in Champaign Jumping across campus, there’s this random plot of nature in the middle of all the apartments that take up Champaign, just north of Green Street past Second Street. Boneyard Creek is a waterway that stretches 3-miles and two spots along its trail catch my eye. On the Bardeen Quad, the break between the buildings and grass by the river really ties the whole space together and laying by the creek is as relaxing as ever. My favorite spot along the Boneyard Creek is around Second and Healey
Streets, where bridges and steps meet the water. Tables and grass are scattered and it doesn’t even feel like Champaign when I’m studying there. I’m definitely missing some spots, but these are just some of my favorite locations. Our huge campus has so much to offer, and I hope you now take advantage of these beautiful areas while the weather is still nice out. Being Illinois, it will, unfortunately, be winter before we know it. Andrea is a senior in media. aflore14@dailyillini.com

UI's best kept secrets
BY CAMILLE BAER FEATURES EDITOR
The University’s campus has plenty to offer, from state-of-the-art research facilities to concerts at The Canopy Club and everything in between. When classes and social life become overwhelming, there are several alternatives to provide a change of pace while at school. Krannert Art Museum For any art enthusiast, the Krannert Art Museum tucked neatly in the west end of campus at 500 E. Peabody Drive, is an excellent option for those who enjoy a relaxing afternoon admiring art at the second largest fine arts museum in Illinois. Grab a coffee at the cafe on your way to observing the unique exhibits the museum offers throughout the year. The extensive range of art provided at KAM also fits the distinctive tastes of each museum-goer. In terms of architecture alone, the Kinkead Pavilion entrance is quite breathtaking, along with the surrounding flowers and foliage; it’ll be hard to remember that test coming up in a week. Japan House Gardens Designed by Jim Bier, these Japanese gardens offer a beautiful, serene escape from
a busy Green Street and bustling campus. The symmetrical simplicity of the gardens provides a soothing atmosphere when finals and homework become a bit too much. In total, there are three gardens that surround the Japan House: the Tea Garden, the Dry Garden and the Sen Cherry Tree Allée. The significance of each garden represents a rich history that proves to stand the test of time. The Dry Garden, or better known as a Zen Garden, was built to represent philosophical ideas that allow the mind to think clearly upon visiting. How’s that for a study break? University of Illinois Horse Farm Now, this location is one that certainly fits the University’s reputation of cornfields and all. However, adjacent to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital resides a horse farm, the Dairy Cattle Research Unit and several other animals. (Horses, cows and sheep, oh my!) This noteworthy attraction brings out the country on-campus with a romantically rural twist. For a school with such a large undergraduate population, the therapeutic presence of animals serves as an escape from pressing priorities. A 20-minute walk from the Main Quad, there’s a large fencedin area holding around a dozen horses that gallop freely. Traveling a bit further past

It’s okay to take time discovering your balance
School BY BERCHAM KAMBER MANAGING EDITOR FOR VISUALS
Life
I’m probably the last person who should be allowed to write about obtaining and maintaining a healthy work/life/school balance. Anybody who knows me in the newsroom can attest to this; I spend about 80 percent of my time either working at The Daily Illini’s office or socializing with its editors and about 20 percent of my time either sleeping or doing schoolwork. We’re often told we can only pick two of the three elusive corners of the work/life/school triangle. I wasn’t always like this; in fact, I was pretty much exactly the opposite. I used to spend every waking minute of my freshman and part of my sophomore years thinking about schoolwork, group projects, half-done extracurriculars and internships. Overloading in an engineering curriculum will do that to anyone. I’d joined the DI the first week of my freshman year but treated it as a resume diversifier. That changed drastically when I applied for and became design editor in March of my sophomore year; I used to spend about three hours each week in the newsroom designing pages but was then required to spend about 30 hours as an editor. Luckily, all the overloading in my first three semesters with the hope of graduating early enabled me to reduce the number of credit hours during my time as design editor. Falling in love with work is a real thing. Having a passion take over every fiber of your existence is something I experienced
and still experience in my positions as design editor and managing editor. Sometimes I think all I will ever want or need in my college years is managing a newsroom of editors who are also my ride-or-die best friends. Unfortunately, this behavior is generally looked down upon by the greater population of adults who’ve graduated college and can even be considered unhealthy. In a school as large and competitive as this, it can become easy to neglect finding a healthy balance for how to spend our time. Strict schedules like the ones we grew accustomed to in high school are shattered: classes meet at different times every semester and extracurriculars have quick turnover rates that demand different time commitments every month. All I can tell you is it’s okay to not have your balance figured out right away. Some semesters demand much more of the “school” corner of your personal balance triangle, some months require more of your “work” corner and your social life will probably change so often that pinning down your “life” corner may seem impossible. But as long as you end each academic year confident that you did the best you could at maintaining your own triangle, the scalene triangles of each semester will even out, and your overall college balance will find you. Cheap but delicious bites around campus D.P. Dough — 33B E. Green St., Champaign This college campus calzone chain (what a tongue twister) will change any previous thoughts you had on pizza’s younger brother. You’re probably wondering, “Why would I get a calzone if I could just get a slice of pizza?” D.P Dough’s calzones beg to differ and they certainly changed my mind. If you feel like you could eat a horse, D.P. Dough offers a hot box deal, which includes a calzone, drink and your choice of side for only $9. Just a note, however: this particular establishment offers little seating, so it’s best to get their calzones to go.
OPINIONS EDITOR
As a broke college student with almost no time to spare, I often find myself gravitating toward cheap but delicious eats. Throughout my freshman and sophomore years, there are four local, lesser-known restaurants I’ve discovered that satisfied my cravings when dorm food or leftovers weren’t enough. While most of these restaurants aren’t on Green Street, they’re definitely worth the extra 2 minutes of walking time to get there. J. Gumbo’s — 700 S. Gregory St., Urbana With arguably the friendliest restaurant staff on campus, J. Gumbo’s, located at 700 S. Gregory St. in Urbana, offers Louisiana cooking at a cheap price. My personal favorite is the voodoo chicken, but I say this with full confidence that the dish is exceptionally spicy. If it’s your first time, definitely consider getting their most popular dish: drunken chicken, which is pretty much the same meal without all the spices. Of course, there are so many other items to try here. From jambalaya to po’ boys, this hidden gem ensures you leave with a happy tummy.

bb.q Premium Chicken — 700 S. Gregory St., Urbana For about $7, you can get a filling rice bowl with the best tasting, cheap (but quality) chicken on campus. The bowl comes with
some greens, fried eggs and your choice of sauce. While their other items are decent, such as the wings and fries, try sticking to the rice bowls; it blows everything else out of the water in terms of taste, portion size and price.
Joe’s Brewery — 706 S. Fifth St., Champaign Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, Joe’s offers half-price burgers. And these aren’t small burgers, by the way — they’re pretty big and are always tasty. The deal comes with a good portion of fries. Plus, there are 18 burgers to choose from, which makes it even harder not to come back a second time. And the best part is that this deal will continue as long as Joe’s is open for business. This is, without a doubt, one of the best deals on campus. Tyler is a junior in Media. tylerjp2@dailyillini.com

The University has a lot to offer to its students in terms of culture, from unique lectures to beautiful architecture and every kind of activity imaginable. Likewise, the cities of Champaign and Urbana both have their own cultural mainstays, many of which fly under students’ radar. For those looking for some new things to do after exploring campus, here are a few places that a just a short bus ride away. 1. Sipyard The Sipyard, located at 204 W. Main St. in Urbana, is a lot to take in at first. Illinois’ only beer garden that operates from a shipping crate, the Sipyard is a great space for hunkering down and studying outside while the weather is still nice. Champaign-Urbana is home to a lot of artists, many of which like to decorate the adjoining alley. The entire alleyway is covered in graffiti that changes regularly, so take the time to explore what’s on the walls because it may not be there the next time you come and people-watch. 2. The Japan House offers both a traditional tea garden and dry garden, with the plants and shrubbery being constantly updated. 5. Allerton Park Allerton Park is truly off-campus — you will probably need a car to get there. But for outdoor aficionados who are looking for a place to hike in the middle of the flatlands of Illinois, Allerton Park is your best bet. The park offers over 14 miles of hiking trails as well as a manor house with large gardens and sculptures, so Allerton Park might need to be a repeat visit.

Delving into our University's quirky personality BY ELLA SCHINDLER COPY CHIEF
The University, peacefully situated among miles and miles of cornfields, has a unique personality many people fall in love with as soon as they move onto campus. I know I definitely did. However, many students walk around campus throughout their four years here not knowing the stories that lie within its corners. Here, I’ll give you an inside look into some of the interesting stories our university has to offer. The State Farm Center The State Farm Center, the dome-shaped, pillow-like structure far on the south side of campus, is the home of the Illini basketball team. Besides being the venue for these games, numerous Convocation events and traveling performances have passed through its doors. However, what most people don’t know is it was designed by a University alumnus. Max Abramovitz graduated from the University’s School of Architecture in 1929. While studying here, he designed the State Farm Center, formerly known as Assembly Hall, for an architecture class project. His professor failed the design he turned in, deeming it not realistic or visually pleasing enough. Then, when he turned the design into the University administration, they chose it as the optimal design for the new center. If that isn’t a story of failure leading to success, I don’t know what is.

Let's be honest here: college is a very stressful time. For most students, you have never experienced a time as stressful as college and it can be very overwhelming. Dealing with stress is very important because it can get out of hand really fast. To help yourself stay sane, you should be donating about an hour a day (at least) to time for yourself. Here are a few helpful tips on how to take your mind off the books and improve your well-being.
Go for a workout Working out is a great way to release endorphins and take your mind off of coursework. In addition, working out will help you stay in shape at the same time. Working out for at least an hour a day with help keep you healthy both physically and mentally.
Read a book Professors assign a lot of mandatory reading over the semester, but it's important to keep reading material you enjoy outside of the classroom. I suggest taking time away from homework and studying to read a book of your choice. Reading is an easy way to take your mind off of the stress of class and focus on something new. Take advantage of your Netflix or Hulu account Here's a helpful tip from an experienced student: the student Spotify package also comes with free Hulu. If you don't have the student Spotify account, take advantage of Netflix. You

As long as you do this in moderation and don't get too crazy, it will help take your mind off of the stress. Best ways to meet people within the first two weeks BY MARISSA PLESCIA ASSISTANT FEATURES EDITOR
Coming to a big school like the University poses its challenges. Being surrounded by so many strangers can be threatening. But those first two weeks of school are the easiest time to meet people. The best way to think about this is: everyone is in the exact same position that you are in. Everyone is surrounded by strangers, and everyone wants to make new friends. Therefore, there is nothing to be nervous about when it comes to meeting new people, and there is no reason to be afraid of approaching strangers. It’ll be worth it in the end. Here are a few tips to help you do that. Keep your door open Some of the first people you’ll meet are in your dorm, and they’re also the easiest people to hang out with because they live in such close proximity. By keeping your door open, it shows you are welcoming and wanting to socialize. Oftentimes, people are walking around the dorms throughout the day and wanting to meet people within those first couple of weeks. Keeping that door open gives them the chance to meet you.
Take advantage of orientation and Welcome Week activities Many dorms will host an orientation that first day at school. Sure, ice-breaker games have gotten old throughout the years, but it’s a great way to socialize with people in your dorm right away. Furthermore, the University hosts several activities all over campus during welcome week. Lots of new students go, and it’s a great way to find new people. Also, they often give out free food at these events. Quad Day Quad Day is packed with people and offers a variety of clubs and organizations to join. The best way to meet new people is to get involved. The school offers over 1,600 organizations, so there is bound to be at least one good fit for you. Find the clubs that interest you, and they will eventually provide you with a niche of people with similar interests. Learn to people-flirt Other people are trying to make friends too, so don’t be afraid to go up to strangers and start conversations. Find common interests and ways to bond. You’re all new to the cam-

looking for a completely empty gym, don’t get your hopes up. Both gyms are open until midnight and given college students’ unconventional schedules, people will often work out right until closing time.
ASSISTANT NEWS EDITOR
Adjusting to college life can be difficult. With new classes, RSOs and social life taking up your time, it’s easy to skip the gym and indulge in greasy dining hall food and latenight pizza a few too many times. Finding a form of exercise you enjoy (and a place you enjoy doing it) can make a huge difference in your mental and physical health and can even act as a form of stress relief from a hectic course schedule. Here are some of the best places to workout on campus, along with some super exclusive, very secret insider tips on how to use them. Campus Recreation Center East The smaller of the two gyms on campus, CRCE (pronounced like Cersei from Game of Thrones) is less popular with students, but within walking distance of the Main Quad. It has most of your typical gym equipment with cardio machines, free weights, strength machines etc. There are also basketball and racquetball courts, a track, a jacuzzi and a swimming pool with a waterslide and volleyball net. Activities and Recreation Center The ARC is the main gym on campus, with

a climbing wall, lap pools, courts, a cycling studio and three stories of cardio equipment, weights, and strength equipment. The basement floor of the ARC is home to both the free weights and the jacked guys wearing sleeveless shirts and drinking preworkout. This can be an intimidating place to go if you’re new to working out.
The ARC also has the added benefit of a cafe by the entrance that accepts cafe credits. (The smoothies are great and even better if you ask them to hold the simple syrup.) Both gyms on campus usually get crowded after classes end at around 4 p.m. and will start emptying out at 7 p.m. If you’re
Historic Urbana Neighborhood Yes, taking a few steps off campus won’t kill you. Urbana is a great place to run or cycle, with long, tree-lined roads, nice sidewalks and interesting architecture. Meadowbrook Park It’s a bit of a hike from campus, but it’s great for long-run days or cycling. The park has 5-miles of trails, a sculpture garden that changes frequently, flower and herb gardens and acres of prairie land. Heather is a sophomore in LAS. schlitz2@dailyillini.com

You will find your people ing. But hey, you may bond with some of your partners over your hatred of group projects!
BY TONI PANTONE ASSISTANT DESIGN EDITOR
Coming to a new school is scary, especially one with 40,000-plus students in it. If you’re from a small town or a place with not a lot of diversity, it can be very intense at first — it sure was for me. One way to make it less overwhelming is to find a group of friends to stick with. It may take some time to find one, but it will happen; I promise. Below are a few places to look. Your dorm Dorms are an amazing way to meet to people. Like you, most of the people in the dorms are new to college and are afraid they won’t make any friends or find their place, either. Those people you walk past every single day in the hallway? Talk to them! The people you see eating in the dining hall all the time? Ask to sit with them! You’re gonna be seeing them for the rest of the year, so you might as well. Besides, nothing says “friendship” like bonding over missing your friends and family, awful food, shower shoes and floor meetings.
Registered Student Organizations Here at the University, we have a huge event called Quad Day where hundreds of RSOs set up booths all around the Main Quad and try to get you to join them by giving out free stuff. There are all types of organizations, from a capella groups to clubs specific to your major. It’s great exposure to the clubs we have here and who knows? You’ll probably make some great friends through them.

Don’t stress about classes; look forward to them
BY BROOKE EBERLE BRAND MANAGER
Coming into college, one might not know what to expect in terms of your classes. You’ve probably been told for the majority of your high school career that “this work won’t cut it in college” or that “when you get to college, it’ll be way harder,” in an attempt to scare you into putting in more work on assignments. However, you should approach college with a completely different outlook. College should be a place to learn and develop who are you are. So instead of worrying about what your GPA will be, look forward to these fun classes that you can take during your next four years at the University.
MACS 100 — Intro to Popular TV & Movies I took this class my first semester of freshman year and it was so much fun. During class time, I got to watch fun show and movies every week like “The Truman Show,” “Hugo,” “America’s Next Top Model,” and plenty more. This class also counts for a Western and a Literature & Arts credit, which are graduation requirements for everybody, so why not get both requirements done while also watching some classic TV shows and movies? It's a pretty popular course and is usually offered every semester, so keep this class in mind if you find a three-credit hour space in your schedule.
GER 199/CWL 199 — Harry Potter & Western Culture If the Harry Potter books were a pretty big staple of your childhood like they were for mine, you should consider taking this class. During the course of the semester, you will re-read all of the Harry Potter books and talk about the overall themes in the series. There is also plenty of discussion time to talk about all of your feelings on the series. Should Hermoine have ended up with Harry? Was Snape a friend or foe? Was Harry Potter actually a Horcrux all along? Time to talk it out with your classmates to find out (while also earning some participation points in the process). This class is usually offered in the spring, so keep your eyes out for when it becomes available.
CPSC 117 — Agriculture and Science of Coffee This is where your coffee addiction may prove useful. In this class, you'll learn about how coffee is grown, harvested and roasted to get to the point where you drink it to get through your midterm study session. You'll also learn about "the wide variety of coffee beverages, coffee flavor evaluation, coffee chemistry, coffee economics, and the physiological effects of coffee" according to the Course Explorer description. Sounds like some interesting material to learn about. And maybe you'll be able to try a few samples if you're lucky. Brooke is a senior in Media. beberle2@dailyillini.com
