very year, buzz's “Best of CU” is dedicated to the people, places and things that make ChampaignUrbana a vibrant and magical community. We seek to celebrate those things that are best, as voted upon by you, our community of readers. After ranking and compiling your votes on categories filed under food and drink, community and entertainment, the buzz staff has worked to write about this year's winners, and we couldn't be

2 buzz Friday, November 8, 2019

more honored to present them in this issue. I joined buzz as a staff writer two and a half years ago. My work took me outside the boundaries of campus and introduced me to the people and places of the C-U community. I learned about the DIY music scene and the creative and dedicated people who make it happen. I explored the glorious drag shows at 51 Main and the power of independent film at The Art Theater. I came to understand the intersection of food and community at Market at the Square and the Red Herring. Each one of my ventures into the community has rendered me increasingly cultured and endlessly curious. This is thanks to talented and intelligent people who empower

this community and make it the hot spot that it is today. Through our editor's picks, we have gotten the chance to share some of our personal experiences in the community. To our fellow University students, who might generally keep to the boundaries of campus, we hope this issue inspires you to take some time to get out and explore all C-U has to offer. We're lucky to be here. Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote this year. This issue is about you and what you believe makes this community strong. No matter how long you've lived in C-U, we hope the opinions of your fellow community members and the work of our writers point you toward something that speaks to your interests.

You no longer need to go to Randolph Street to bite into one of their famous burgers – they’ve been voted the best for over 5 years. They have a wide selection of all kinds of burgers, so there’s truly something for everyone. Try one of their original Russell burgers, which features mushrooms, bacon, pepper jack and blue cheese. If you like spice, try the Green Chile Cheeseburger or the Fire burger. If you’re someone that prefers blue cheese over the ranch, this is truly the place for you. Many of their burgers include their signature blue cheese and they even offer extras if requested,

because they know how much people love it. If not, they have a large selection of other cheeses to put on your burger, like American, Feta, Provolone, Habanero, and more. Vegetarians can have no fear of going to this burger joint; Farren’s offers great options geared just for our plant-based friends. They have a customizable vegetarian burger and black bean tacos. Multiple sandwiches and salads are also vegetarian-friendly, such as the Pesto and Cheese sandwich. Have a friend that’s not super into burgers? Don’t worry. Black Dog is proud to have been serving Chambana local products for over 10 years. They get their beef from Rantoul, and have local beers on draft at both locations. They opened in Urbana in 2009, and have only continued to grow and expand. As a student, I can attest that Black Dog is one of the top spots to take your parents to when you want to impress them. Head on over to one of their locations soon to experience their southern-style cooking. BEST MEXICAN FOOD MAIZE

100 N. Chestnut St., Champaign, IL 61820 and 60 E. Green St., Champaign, IL 61820 CAROLINA GARIBAY

T

o no one’s surprise, Maize takes the spot for best Mexican food, continuing their winning streak and once again proving their spot as the best Mexican food in C-U. Since first opening in Champaign in 2011, Maize has been a welcoming restaurant full of friendly workers and fresh, authentic Mexican food. “We try to do everything as true as possible to tradition,” said Armando Sandoval, owner and manager of Maize. Sandoval emphasizes the importance of sticking to traditional Mexican cuisine but also said Maize is not 100% authentic since we aren’t in Mexico. He said every Mexican restaurant is going to have its own take on Mexican food, which is one of the reasons why he loves what he does. Sandoval also loves being able to bring people together through his cooking.

6 buzz Friday, November 8, 2019

"Cooking is a good way to connect with people,” Sandoval said. His love for cooking traditional Mexican food pairs well with C-U’s love for tasty restaurants with a friendly environment and close-knit staff. “I enjoy the community and the University,” Sandoval said. “Everybody has good energy.” Sandoval brings this warmth and friendliness of the community into Maize, which is likely one of the reasons why Maize has become a staple of C-U and a favorite among those in the community. Though Maize has won Best of C-U several times in the past, Sandoval stays humble and stresses that his main goal is making traditional food for people to enjoy. “Enjoying cooking and having people is I think the best thing.” garibay5@readbuzz.com

SIAM TERRACE

F

or the sixth year in a row, Siam Terrace takes the crown for Best Thai Food. In the sea of amazing Thai restaurants Champaign-Urbana has to offer, it can get overwhelming trying to find one that fulfills all your needs. With delicious menu items inspired by C-U like Tower of Urbana and Tower of Champaign, the ambient lighting and the serene aesthetic, no wonder Siam Terrace is a hit among C-U residents and students alike. As it is a bit farther away from campus, Siam Terrace is away from all the frenzy of Campustown, making it a nice getaway spot for students, the C-U community and a chill atmosphere. Siam Terrace has distanced itself from the grab-and-go, fast food quality that most on-campus restaurants have and has created an inviting environment for customers to sit down, enjoy a meal and value a moment of peace

in the bustling town that is CU. Siam Terrace features signature dishes including the Fancy Maki Roll, Spicy Thai Style Curry and Shrimp Pad Thai, a customer favorite. Its house specials, such as the Fire Cracker Chicken, are worth ordering. The dish consists of crispy chicken served with jasmine rice, red onion, mushroom, bell pepper, green onion, dried chili and peanut tossed in sweet chili paste. Another favorite is the Spicy Minced Chicken and Basil, a minced chicken stir-fried with onion, green peppers, red peppers, green bean and sweet basil. Siam Terrace has been a winner among C-U residents for six years and its dedication to its customers and delicious cuisine have proven how much it has deserved its crown all these years. affey2@readbuzz.com

he Dancing Dog Eatery and Juicery, located on Main Street in downtown Urbana, takes the spot for Best Vegetarian Food, reclaiming the title previously held by the Red Herring. The restaurant provides community members who stick to a plant-based diet with a wide range of food options that can't be found as easily anywhere else in the community. Locally owned and operated, The Dancing Dog Eatery is open for lunch every day, dinner Monday, Wednesday-Sunday and Sunday brunch. Diners can enjoy their meals or snacks in the relaxed ambiance of the restaurant or carry out food to eat at home. Patrons coming from campus or Champaign can easily access it via MTD buses that run down Main Street. The restaurant offers a completely vegan

menu, but the accessible food options are easily enjoyable for people of all dietary interests. In addition to unexpectedly plantbased meal options such as Pasta Alfredo, Nachos and various burgers, The Dancing Dog Eatery also specializes in desserts and smoothies. Items can also be made wheatfree upon request. Saturday evenings are a particular draw for the plant-based community, as Dancing Dog serves vegan deep dish pizza. The dough is homemade and made on site which is why it is only offered at a select time each week. The pizza offers the taste of a typical butter crust so it hits the spot for both vegans and non-vegans. kmp2@readbuzz.com

hether it’s because you burned dinner or you’re just too lazy to cook, you can never go wrong with some good pizza. It’s a staple food for any occasion everyone loves, and if you’re one of those people who don’t love it, are you even human? It was a close one this year, but the C-U community voted Papa Del’s as the best place to get a slice of pizza in 2019. Papa Del’s, located on Neil Street in Champaign, is more than an average pizza joint you’d find on campus. Once you open the restaurant’s doors, you’re immediately greeted with a cozy and rustic atmosphere complete with a fireplace in the center. This rusticness is also reflected through the process of making their food as all the ingredients used are fresh, including the dough. Their most popular food, hands down, is

the deep-dish pizza, which you can get by the slice. However, if you’re one of those people who like eating whole pizzas in one sitting, be prepared to wait a while. A typical deep dish pizza at Papa Del’s usually takes around 45-55 minutes to make, so patience is key if you want the optimal pizza experience. If deep-dish isn’t for you and you think you’re out of luck, forget about it! Papa Del’s offers a diverse menu of foods including pasta for pasta-lovers, sandwiches and salads. Also, for those who are on a “diet” but want pizza without all the calories that come with deep-dish, try their All-American Thin pizza. Needless to say, regardless of the type of foodie you are, Papa Del’s caters to the needs of every restaurant-goer. jel3@readbuzz.com

ith tons of food trucks across campus, it can be hard to decide where to make your next purchase. In the realm of Best of CU, the people of ChampaignUrbana have voted Pandemonium Doughnuts as their favorite campus Food Truck. Pandamonium is the perfect place to stop for a morning pick-me-up on the way to class or to satisfy your sweet tooth. With their artisan-made, small-batch donuts, you can really taste the love in their food. They also have new exciting flavors all the time which are much more exciting than the same flavors from any other donut shop. James Kyung, who co-owns Pandamo-

nium with his wife, said they saw a lack of availability in town for one of their loves: donuts. So, they decided to make their own. He said their decision to start a business has paid off tenfold. "We wanted to leave our mark in terms of our business being our love of food and sharing that love with everyone in C-U, he said. Pandamonium Doughnuts is a food truck here to stay, and it’s a must-try for any citizens or visitors to the area. The truck can be found on campus and in downtown Champaign and Urbana. avat2@readbuzz.com

BEST DESSERT HOPSCOTCH

802 W. John St., Champaign, IL 61820 BILL TAYLOR

A

fter relinquishing its title for the last two years, Hopscotch Bakery has once again come back on top as the consensus pick for the best dessert in Champaign-Urbana. Compared to many of the other C-U favorites, Hopscotch is a relatively fresh face, having been established in 2015. But it has become as integral a part of the C-U community as any businesses with more seniority. It provides C-U denizens with delicious desserts and so much more. Hopscotch offers a fine selection of immaculate, homemade sweet treats for all occasions. Their centerpiece items are their cakes, offering twelve different designs and many choices for flavor, icing and filling. To just look at pictures of them is to risk drooling a little, let alone seeing them in person and actually tasting them. Plus, they offer smaller items of similar quality, including

12 buzz Friday, November 8, 2019

cupcakes, cookies and macarons. All these items are sourced from ingredients that they proudly say are, “made in Champaign,” including locally-made cream, flour, oats and fruits. Hopscotch is more than a bakery. It’s also something of a community hangout. In addition to tasty treats, they offer a steady stream of in-store workshops and neighborhood events. In October, they hosted Thursday afternoon tarot card readings. In November, there will be workshops on how to make pendants and holiday setpieces with flowers and pumpkins. It’s providing these kinds of services to the community that makes Hopscotch a staple of the C-U community, even just a few years into its existence. Here’s to many more years. wtz@readbuzz.com

If coffee isn’t your thing, Avionics also has teas to choose from, such as chai and loose-leaf options. Specialty drinks and seasonal drinks help to add a distinctive flair to the menu, so each time you walk in you can find something new and different to try. Food options also make up a decent chunk of the menu. Avocado stacks, egg sandwiches, granola bowls and lox plates are just some of the items available. Avionics’ homey feel and delicious coffee are what make it C-U’s favorite and what keeps patrons coming back for more. sbent3@readbuzz.com

mong the surplus of locations offering bubble tea to C-U residents and students, Kung Fu Tea has stood out to the community and has received the “Best of C-U” award for best bubble tea in 2019. Located on Sixth Street, less than a block from Green Street, its location is very convenient for those who want some bubble tea but do not want to get stuck in the bustle of other Green Street locations. Kung Fu Tea is a worldwide bubble tea chain, serving a variety of different drinks and light dishes. The Champaign location creates a very intimate atmosphere for students looking for a chill place to enjoy their bubble tea fix. Kung Fu Tea is decorated with dimmed lighting and neonlight accents, and the chalkboard wall panels offer an Instagram- or Snapchat-worthy aesthetic. “Our space also provides customers with Wi-Fi as well as plenty of outlets so students often come to our business to get work done when they want an environment that's different from

their dorm, apartment, or the library," said Joy, (need to find last name) manager of Kung Fu Tea. "Whether people come to our restaurant to eat, socialize, or get work done our business provides a fun, laid back environment to spend time in which is something we believe has really benefited the CU community.” The wide variety of bubble tea options allows customers to experiment with different topping and flavor combinations. The company boasts its use of hand-picked Taiwanian tea leaves and their special brewing process that provides a truly authentic beverage. It is no wonder that many C-U customers feel the quality of bubble tea from Kung Fu Tea is worthy of this award. Even though Kung Fu Tea has risen to an international level, they still offer authenticity to the bubble tea scene, and they have definitely made their mark on the Champaign-Urbana area. rukayah2@readbuzz.com

here do you go to get a good buzz going? Well, if you’re going anywhere but PUNCH! Bar, then you might be doing something wrong. With a modern but welcoming environment, you’re sure to feel welcomed walking into this location. Recently opened in July, it grew into a major downtown hot spot. Connected to Hyatt Place, the dark, cozy lounge and bar area is a welcoming place. The cocktail bar has a subtle Ernest Hemingway theme, noticeable in the menu and upon looking closely at the books placed along the bar shelving. Like all bars, it has a selection of wines and beers, some local brews on tap as well. But what really sets the place apart is their incredible cocktail menu. They

feature classics, seasonal drinks and specials. They have twists on classics and everyone can find something to enjoy. But if you’re not a cocktail drinker, don’t fear, their menu has something for every type of drinker. Along with their wonderful drinks, they have a small snack-type menu to pair with your beverages. So, meet up with your friends after work or class at PUNCH!, located in downtown Champaign. The bar is open from every day from 3 p.m. to 12 a.m. Monday through Thursday, 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 p.m. on Sunday. Come check our their classic drinks and fun twists! pleden2@readbuzz.com

BEST BREAKUP MEAL

reakups suck, and they suck even more when they happen to your best friends. Obviously, you cheer them up by hitting the town and doing the things they love, but you have to get a good meal before it’s time for you all to part ways for the night in order to truly solidify your time together. So after a long night of being out, you all go back to your friend’s house, pick up the phone and order Chopstix. Chopstix has become a staple on campus for its delicious Chinese food for relatively good prices. The staff members are committed to giving costumers the fastest service possible and will deliver daily until the early hours of the morning.

BEST PLACE TO TRY SOMETHING NEW

My go-to items on the menu are the steamed dumplings and subgum lo mein, but Chopstix also has options for people who are vegetarian or just concerned with being health-conscious. However, does the health-conscious aspect of the menu matter in the context of a breakup? There’s nothing like a greasy meal after getting your heart broken, and sharing it with friends while chilling out makes it all the better. jel3@readbuzz.com

I

t’s no secret that beloved restaurants close their doors permanently all too often in Champaign (RIP Azzip, Antonio’s Pizza, Fernando’s). It’s devastating when your favorite lunch spot or drunk food becomes obsolete. Thankfully, Champaign- Urbana is constantly welcoming new restaurants and businesses to join the community. Some of my favorite places to go and eat have opened recently. El Toro opened a new location in March on Fields Drive in Champaign. Yes, we’ve all been to El Toro, but something about the ambiance of this new location makes it even better. There is beautiful patio seating and a revamped drink menu that includes margarita flights.

Sticky Rice is another great restaurant that opened just last summer. Located in downtown Champaign, Sticky Rice is Asian cuisine, offering both Lao and Thai food. The restaurant has a homey vibe, and the food is always incredible. And finally, I’m sorry, I have to say it … Chick-fil-A has finally opened a location in Champaign, and I’m pumped about it. I didn’t think I was the type of person to wait 25 minutes for a chicken sandwich, but alas, I am. We are so lucky to live in a community where there are constantly new restaurants to try, and C-U continues to introduce them. kaylarb2@readbuzz.com

hether you’re from the ChampaignUrbana area looking to try something new or you’re a student trying to find a nail salon away from home, Modern Nails is by far the best place to go. Modern Nails is C-U’s voted best nail salon this year, and it has even been one of my favorite salons I’ve ever been to. They offer a wide variety of nail and waxing services, as well as complimentary water and wine to customers who are of age. For manicures, you can get regular polish, acrylic or gel nails, dip (a new trend I’m obsessed with) and no chip. There is also a wide range of pedicure options. Waxing services include face and arms. All

services are reasonably priced and listed on their website. The staff and nail technicians are extremely friendly and knowledgeable, always willing to try new styles and designs at the request of the customers and hold fun conversations while doing it. The salon takes walk-in appointments but typically stays busy throughout the day. So, it might be best to call ahead of time and make an appointment, especially if you’re in a hurry or plan on coming in large groups. kaylarb2@readbuzz.com

hrifting should be classified as a hobby. It’s a fun thing to do with friends, it gets you out of the house and, in the process, you’re living more sustainably. Thrifting is a win-win for everyone because not only are you saving the world, but you also get some pretty cool finds out of it. This year, the Champaign-Urbana community has voted Dandelion as the best place to go for all its thrifting desires. The store, sitting in The Station, has been a fixture in downtown Champaign since 1993. It offers endless rows of vintage clothing and jewelry that will make it seem like customers are traveling back in time. Dandelion also shares its space with Exile on Main, a popular record store and the winner of Best Record Store for multiple years running. This perfect combination provides a unique shopping experience and attracts all sorts of people from students to

vintage collectors. Charlotte Westcott, the current owner of Dandelion, has only been the owner since January. However, she has plenty of positive experiences with her costumers and finds something magical about the store. “My favorite thing has been making connections with a range of people through the love of fashion and music, and when people have shared photos (or) reached out to me later about their finds!” Westcott said. Whether it’s shopping for costumes, a vintage look or something that’ll make you look like a theater geek, Dandelion is the place to go. “It’s a place where you can feel comfortable and have fun exploring your personal style in a more sustainable way,” Westcott said. “Thanks for the love, C-U!” jel3@readbuzz.com

Jane Addams opened in Chicago in 1984 before later moving to Champaign. Since then, it has become a C-U staple, cherished by members of the C-U community. Susan Elmore, owner of Jane Addams, said she thinks the bookstore’s charm and wide variety of books are what draw people into the store. “We’re unique,” Elmore said. “Unfortunately, there are not many bookstores left, so we’re one of the few places people can go if they love books.” This makes Jane Addams extra special to the C-U community, as does its unique layout and extensive selection of books. Book lovers should have no problem finding something to read at Jane Addams. The three-level bookstore houses around 70,000

If you haven’t been to Jane Addams yet, don’t worry. They have a map to help guide you through their 15 rooms of books, so you should be able to easily locate your favorite categories and topics. “We’ve got a lot to choose from,” Elmore said. “I think people enjoy coming in.” She also said Jane Addams will be celebrating 10 years in Champaign this December, so if you haven’t visited the store yet, stop in this December to celebrate with them. garibay5@readbuzz.com

At Neutral Cycle, customers can find specially designed bikes, have their bikes repaired as well as purchase accessories or rentals. The shop also hosts rides and events throughout the community. Located in Champaign on the northwest end of campus, Neutral Cycle believes bicycles are for everyone. According to their website, Neutral Cycle believes in “the positive impact of the bicycle, and the freedom and simplicity it embodies.” Neutral Cycle offers a program called Chambana Bike which is a bike designed exclusively at the shop for the community. The program allows students to rent

a bike for a semester, a summer or even a full academic year. The program makes it simple for students to access a bike during their time on campus without having to face large costs or poor quality equipment. Additionally, students can also store their bikes while they’re away on breaks and have repairs done without any extra costs. But Neutral Cycle’s impact on the community goes beyond its products and services. The shop powers an event called “C-U Speaks!” in which community leaders, experts and researchers give 30-minute lectures that break down the impact of national events on the local community. The first thing you see when you open its website is the announcement that it “has been voted ‘Best Record Store’ in Champaign-Urbana nearly every year” since its 2004 opening, and they can rest easy knowing they can keep boasting this for another year. Exile remains a collector’s dream, as one would expect from a store created by someone who worked his way through several other record stores. Exile offers music of all kinds and in all different formats, providing both new music and hidden gems from yesteryear in equal measure. Rifling through their vast collections is a thrill, opening the consumer up for all kinds of new discoveries they might not have made otherwise. Even if you go in looking for something in particular,

you can’t help but stay a while and see what kind of treasures might be encountered in the process. Exile has also been a consistent supporter of local bands, both by giving their albums a place of pride in the store and opening up the store’s main stage for them to perform. And for the last five years, they’ve also partnered with fellow hip local business Dandelion Vintage, which does for clothes what Exile does for music. Exile’s loose, welcoming vibe has kept it beloved in the C-U community even beyond its music selection. ast year this highly prestigious award for Best Bathroom went to an old fan favorite, the Illini Union, but this year Punch! took the porcelain prize. Never heard of Punch! Bar? Well that’s no surprise since it’s only been open since July. Indeed, the cocktail bar has made quite the impact to downtown Champaign with rave reviews on its Facebook page and Yelp. The defining features seem to be handmade cocktails and, of course, the bathroom. Any upscale bar needs a nice bathroom after all, and Punch Bar is no exception. The old saying goes, a true test of character is not how you treat your equal but your infe-

rior, and this is reflected in how establishments treat their bathrooms. Bathrooms are often the easiest room to overlook and get dirty, but winning the Best Bathroom in its first year gives it a nice reputation right off the bat. Will this new kid on the block defy the odds and stay on top next year? Will its standards of cleanliness and overall attention to detail for a room most try to avoid as much as possible stay high? Only time will tell, but for now, if you’re downtown and you gotta go, you gotta go at Punch! liamd2@readbuzz.com

I

f you’re looking for an experience that exemplifies the spirit of community in ChampaignUrbana, I would suggest heading out to a house show and basking in the DIY music scene. This pick could have gone under entertainment since house shows and the DIY scene produce music and live shows, which subsequently provide entertainment. And while I’ve been blown away by the amount of talent and creativity among the music acts I’ve seen, what I remember most from my experiences at these shows has been the sense of joy and connection I was left with. In April, Champaign house venue Blips and Chitz hosted its final show before the house turned over to new owners. I had the opportunity to attend that show, my first one at the venue. The performers and the audience members spoke about what their time at the venue meant

to them over the course of their musical development and the hole it would leave when it was gone. Even though I had never been to a show there previously, I understood why it mattered that it would be gone. I also understood that I wanted to make sure I supported other house venues in the C-U area during my time here. In many ways, the DIY scene represents an intersection between University students and the rest of the community. The venues and music draw people from different walks of life and bring about collaboration from both communities. So if you’re looking for a chance to meet some of the best people in town, take the leap and head to a house show. These venues promote safety and friendship. They’re part of the C-U spirit and will draw you in again and again.

“C

reativity” is such a broad term in the sense that everyone expresses it in different ways. Regardless of the type of creative person you are, going to the I.D.E.A. Store is the perfect way to help perfect your craft in an eco-friendly and inexpensive way. The I.D.E.A. Store has been on the scene since 2010, but it recently moved to the Lincoln Square Mall in Urbana from Champaign over the summer. If you ask me, it fits right in with the Urbana aesthetic, as part of its appeal in the community is that you can buy the most random things from golf balls to keys. My favorite buy was baby doll hands, which I place around our house to confuse my roommates.

The I.D.E.A. Store’s motto is “Make Art, Not Trash,” and it stands by it to the max. The one thing the shop encourages is creative reuse, which is the process of making things out of non-traditional materials, hence why everything is so random. This ultimately helps conserve natural resources and gets harmful chemicals out of the environment. So whenever you walk into the I.D.E.A. Store again or for the first time, just remember you’re supporting a nonprofit organization and helping the greater good of planet Earth. jel3@readbuzz.com

iding into their 10th anniversary, 90’s Daughter makes headlines time after time in the community. This year, they’re voted C-U’s best local band and best cover band. Indeed, as they land their 10th year of influencing the local C-U area, Illinois' favorite party band starts off with songwriter Freddie Mercury’s “We Are the Champions,” winning acclaim for their victorious effort to provide the community with the energy that gets the crowd moving and tuning into old hits. These guys get their groove on to more than just the '90s, as their setlist will definitely have the audience rocking out to the best hits throughout decades. Musicians Tom Grassman, Michael Guido Esteves, Amy Mitchell and Stephen Johnson are all members of the band. Diving into this group’s musical dynamic, Grassman describes their musical unit as a “bunch of best friends” and says this group shares the same love and appreciation for bringing in live music regularly to the Champaign-Urbana area. Announced and featured on their Facebook page, 90’s Daughter provides a series of their action-

packed performances that inevitably lead to a fun party-like atmosphere with dancing included. Not only are they the life of the party, but they are also charitable. This close-knit group doesn’t just rock together; they also donate their time and money into other things in the area. Grassman said their effort to bring entertainment into the Champaign-Urbana community starts with the youth as they fund summer rock camps. Currently, Grassman explains the band is “dipping their fingers into a lot of pies.” From running high-energy parties to summer camps, they lead the form with providing the fun at your local weddings, corporate events, festivals and club dates. They’re actively providing shows that create opportunities for other artists as well. Don’t forget to check them out at Boomerang’s, a local bar and grill run by Grassman himself. For the past 21 years, Grassman has been an avid music lover like his bandmates. Go ahead and check them out and get a taste for yourself. achapa6@readbuzz.com

he representation of diversity and culture is slowly getting better in our society, but sometimes it can be lacking. This representation is necessary and now, thankfully, being expanded into all aspects of life, including music. This year, the Champaign Urbana community picked KALESA as their favorite upand-coming band of 2019. This all-Filipino pop and rock band performs at venues all around the city, as well as in festivals. Surprisingly, their debut was just back in August. Allyson Magno, one of the band’s vocalists, said KALESA strives to expose members of the community to cultures other than their own. One of the perks that comes with this is KALESA’s ability to have fun and enjoy themselves while doing it. “We help to represent cultural diversity,” Magno said. “The majority of our band members were born and raised in the

Philippines.” This is certainly reflected through their music as well. Though most of their songs are performed in English, there are some performed in Tagalog, a language spoken by one quarter of the population in the Philippines. One of Magno’s favorite things about KALESA is the band practices with her laid-back bandmates. “It’s just such a nice break from our everyday routines,” Magno said. “We each have a serious passion for music, and when we all get together, it hardly ever feels like work.” For those who hope to see what KALESA has in store for in the future, be sure to check out KALESA’s performance at Neil Street Blues on Nov. 22. jel3@readbuzz.com

here are many places to catch the latest film here in Champaign-Urbana, but no place offers quite the movie-going experience quite as The Art Theater could. As Hollywood pumps out mediocre sequel after lackluster reboot, The Art Theater allows you to take a break from all that and rewatch classics, see live shows and even the latest independent films to satiate any cinephile. Recently becoming a nonprofit, The Art Theater now offers the chance to give back to the community in a unique and fun way. Now movie-goers can walk into the early 20th-century theater and know their ticket money is being used to help “promote culture and education through film and cinema,'' according to its mission statement. The small theater might not have the biggest screen or 100 recliner seats; instead, it trades quantity and size for quality. With new shows every week

— sometimes every day — the diversity of content beats sleeping through a movie in a recliner any day. No true movie-going experience is complete without popcorn as everyone knows, but what about a cocktail? The Art Theater offers alcoholic beverages to go along with its snacks and, for certain movies, the theater has even offered themed drinks to really set the scene. Since winning this title, The Art Theater has closed its doors and its loss in the C-U community will certainly be felt. Really, one only needs to look at the diversity of shows The Art Theater hosts to see why it is this year’s, and several other years, Best Movie Theater. Nowhere else can you see Casablanca, The Godfather, Rocky Horror Picture Show (with live performers) and Found Footage Fest all in the same theater. liamd2@readbuzz.com

ometimes we all need some relaxation from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, and there’s no better way of accomplishing that than going on a brief walk. Crystal Lake Park, in Urbana, is a perfect spot for nature-lovers and relaxation seekers alike during all seasons of the year. Though the park is small, there’s a lot you can do there. For example, it has fishing piers, seasonal boat rentals and spots for picnics throughout the park. It also offers classes in Crystal Lake Park Lakehouse throughout the year, from painting

They seem relatively boring, but it’s really funny when you try to feed them. They do a “war waddle,” and hiss for you to go away, but they also really want food and will take it out of your hand. hampaign-Urbana is the hub for some really cool events and festivals, some that people travel a great distance to attend. My favorite by far is Pygmalion. Occurring in the fall, the festival hosts a variety of acts spanning music, comedy, literature and more. In 2019, the festival brought big names like Antoni Porowski and Japanese Breakfast. The best part is it spans across all of Champaign-Urbana, with events occurring at various venues in the area, giving attendees an opportunity to see many parts of C-U. Another Midwestern staple is the Urbana Sweetcorn Festival. Up to 30,000 ears of sweetcorn are eaten per year at this

wonderful event. And most importantly, this festival brought Smash Mouth to me in 2016. Getting to eat all the corn my heart desires and see a couple of icons perform “All-Star?” What more could anyone want? C-U has so many other festivals that occur throughout the year that revolve around food, music, movies, art and so much more. There is never a dull moment, but these two have really stood out to me throughout my time in Champaign-Urbana and have been home to some of my fondest memories. kaylarb2@readbuzz.com
