The number of violations distributed on Unofficial in 2017 was at a 10-year low, according to the Champaign and University of Illinois Police Department press releases.

114 citations were issued out during Unofficial St. Patrick’s Day on March 3, 2017. This number is the lowest it has been in 10 years, according to the Champaign Police Department.

Unofficial 2016 had a total of 160 citations.

Out of the 114 violations in 2017, 32 were issued to people who do not attend the University.

Rules for ChampaignUrbana Mass Transit District buses will not change on Unofficial.

“As long as they can get themselves on the bus, then I think they are OK. If you can’t walk yourself and get yourself on a bus, you are that drunk, they won’t let you get on the bus,” said Chris Laroe, a bus driver at MTD. Operators are trained to use their best judgment when deciding whether to allow a passenger to ride, wrote Lisa Meid, media manager at MTD, in an email.

The company has a no eating or drinking policy for the buses, so alcohol will not be allowed on Unofficial.

“All policies apply whether it’s Unofficial or a Friday night or a Monday morning. All of our policies are policies,” said Kim Paris, another bus driver at MTD. “But the most important thing is being safe. If we ever have a situation, we can call a supervisor who’ll handle the situation.”

same philosophy of providing assistance and rides, but it does not pick up at bars. Meid said if a person appears to be in need of medical assistance, operators will radio for help, but they may refuse a ride.

“One guideline we have is that if operators witness others helping a passenger who is unconscious or who seems to be coming in and out of consciousness, they radio for supervisor assistance and METCAD is notified so that the person can receive medical

care,” Meid said.

METCAD is a dispatch center in Champaign.

MTD has worked with campus police departments, municipalities and University officials to communicate the need for safe practices on Unofficial, including safety messages on WPGU and interior signs with messages from the dean of students.

Usually, there’s an uptick in need for bus services in the Campustown area on Unofficial. Meid said students who participate in Unofficial need to

be aware of all vehicular traffic in Campustown, including buses.

“MTD takes our mission of providing mobility to Illinois students very seriously and we work hard to help in any way we can during events like Unofficial,” Meid said. We know that some students will participate in Unofficial and others will not, and we plan staff and act accordingly so that everyone receives the service they need and expect from us.”

Tianxu Zhu, graduate student in LAS, said he wonders what harm they are doing in the locker room while using their phones for music or social media.

He suggested there are more beneficial ways of supervising the locker rooms besides patrolling security guards.

“I’ve been going to CRCE and ARC off and on for over a year,” Zhu said. “Everyone uses their phone in the locker rooms. People are either texting or using social media. I think a more technical way of stopping people using their phones would be to just block the cell service in the locker rooms. No one would use them, and no one would get in trouble.”

Unofficial. It’s an effort to bring different agencies together so they can try to educate, prevent and create safety measures.

There are around 20 representatives within the committee from both inside and outside of the University, such as the Counseling Center, the chancellor and dean of students’ offices, the vice chancellor for student affairs and the police departments of Champaign, Urbana and the University.

“The biggest thing is that we want the students to be safe and make sure it’s a safe environment for students,” Cunningham said. “Hopefully, one day, we won’t have to have the committee because this won’t be a thing.”

Chelsea Hamilton, senior assistant director for communications and marketing for University Housing, said they are also working to share information from the University Police Department about safety and how students can watch out for one another.

Hamilton said the key is to keep it moderate, make a plan, eat and drink water, pace yourself and look out for one another.

“During Unofficial, for the security of our buildings, there are going to be additional housing staff as well as additional University policies,” Hamilton said. “Our job is really to make sure that our residents are safe and that is something that we really pride ourselves in.”

“That is very important because during those four days, the only people who are going to be allowed inside of the residence halls, as well as the dining centers, are current University students,” Hamilton said.

Jessica Varela, senior in AHS, said she plans to go to some parties with her friends on Unofficial.

“It’s unfortunate that students get hurt because of drinking alcohol,” Varela said. “But (it’s important to be) careful and to be mindful.”

CRCE prohibits cellphones in locker rooms

Illinois Campus Recreation is looking to update policy signs to prohibit cellphone usage in locker rooms due to the high volume of verbal warnings given by security officers.

They have not yet set a date for when the signs, which say “Cell Phone Usage Prohibited in Locker Rooms,” will be put up.

However, the process of creating these signs has been going on since early November, said Ryan Johnson, campus security coordinator.

Campus security guards are patrolling the locker rooms until the signs are put into effect.

Patrick Wade, the spokesman for the University of Illinois Police Department, said reprimanding those on their cellphones is a longstanding practice to ensure the safety and comfort of those using the facilities.

“Security guards at Campus Recreation facilities routinely request that patrons refrain from using cellphones in bath-

At this point, Riddle said, the IFC sees no reason to make the alcohol ban’s procedures more relaxed or rigid.

Nathan Meier, president of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, said he feels Unofficial is overhyped and no alcohol ban is needed.

“I don’t even think they really have to do it, but I understand why they do do it,” Meier said.

She also recommended the implementation of a “no-guest” policy for the weekend.

Meier said, as president, he will be staying at the fraternity house this weekend to ensure safety; however, he will be the only officer staying for the weekend.

“I’m staying at the house because I want to be here because it’s a high — profile weekend,” Meier said. “But I didn’t require anyone else to stay on campus, so other officers are going home.”

Meier added t he weekend’s festivities are not very prominent for their fraternity, so most members under 21 years old do not stay the weekend.

“Most of the guys go home. Some of the seniors stay,” Meier said. “For the most part, guys go home and hang out with their families because they can’t go to the bars.”

Put the St. Patrick’s Day back in Unofficial

H

as anyone else noticed that Unofficial has seemed lackluster in the last couple of years?

The upperclassmen of the Editorial Board have noticed.

In the last couple of years, Unofficial has become just another day to go out, day drink and go to the bars. On a barheavy campus like our own, this is not unlike any other Friday or Saturday afternoon. It’s just another excuse to go to the bars on a campus where — let’s face it — we don’t need an excuse to day drink.

Unofficial used to be a bigger deal — perhaps because when it first began it had a direct correlation to St. Patrick’s Day since the students weren’t going to be on campus during the actual holiday which typically occurs over spring break.

According to the University of Illinois Ar-

chives, Unofficial “officially” started in 1995 and featured the signature “Shamrock Stagger.” There were 10 campus bars that sponsored the event, which included drink deals and giveaways. As the party weekend grew in size throughout the next few decades, so did the looks. Green top hats and shamrock glasses were commonplace around campus.

However, the campus holiday has since lost its flair and turned into a “just show up in a green shirt and drink” day. When compared with what this campus does every other weekend, the only difference is the green shirt.

Part of the decline in the frenzy surrounding the day has been for the better. We’re not advocating for irresponsible behavior. Unofficial is not without its negatives; numerous students have died over the

infamous weekend, as recently as last year.

However, Unofficial shows no signs of completely ceasing to exist anytime soon, so we might as well lean into the theme a little more.

Recently, an “unofficial uniform” has appeared: green longsleeve T-shirts, often depicting the Chief and the words “Unofficial” or “Illiniwek.” The Illinois class Facebook pages are flooded with links to various online retailers offering iterations of the same shirt. But minimalism and conformity are not welcome this Unofficial. Once you have one Unofficial KAM’s shirt, do you really need another?

For this reason, the Editorial Board has two requests: First, be safe. You’ve heard it countless times, so we’re not here to badger you with another reminder to be responsible; however, make sure

you have a plan in place and friends by your side throughout the entire day.

Now as for what to wear, put St. Patrick’s Day back into Unofficial St. Patrick’s Day. This is a call to action for the green glitter beard, spray painted orange hair and a good old-fashioned Irish brogue.

There are perks to spicing up your Unofficial flair beyond just the “yaass queens” you’ll receive when walking down Green Street in your best Leprechaun realness. A brightly colored costume may just get you out of cover and allow you to avoid long lines.

If we’re going to celebrate Unofficial St. Patrick’s Day, let’s at least do it right. Stay safe, have fun with the theme and make it a day to remember.

have a lot of “what if” questions. What if books become obsolete in my lifetime? What if everyone on Earth jumped at the same time?

Among the other “what ifs” that keep me up at night, my favorite one is this: What if music was visible?

During my senior year of high school, I learned about a phenomenon called synesthesia.

According to the American Psychological Association, this extraordinary sensory condition allows some people to perceive music in an array of colors. A smaller minority of these synesthetes encounter music in a visual sense. As for the rest of us ungifted humans, our imagination is the only tool available for such a feat.

I propose that music, if paired synchronously with patterns of color and light, would be more enjoyable. To be clear, I mean this in an advanced three-dimensional sense.

For example, you may have encountered the iTunes visualizers. Perhaps you have seen YouTube videos in which a pattern pulses to the beat of a song. I’m not convinced these current programs offer the complexity visualization deserves.

What if each instrument you hear in a song had its own unique pattern or shape? What if you could immerse yourself in this art form and interact with the design? Considering we live in a prospering age of technology, the concept is possible. I can’t think of a better way to illustrate my view than with virtual reality.

Virtual reality is profound in many ways. With the addition of advanced music visualization, VR could redefine the experience of a song.

This semester, I was fortunate to meet with Jamie Nelson and Jim Wentworth, faculty of the TechHub in the Armory.

After explaining my ideas, I was shown multiple VR programs that occupy the realm of music. One of these programs was created by the Chainsmokers. This presentation featured the Chainsmokers’ hit song, “Paris.”

While listening to the tune, the viewer is transported through a city in evening light. Sparks fly, stars sparkle and spherical orbs pulse to the beat. Having never experienced virtual reality before, I was perplexed by the quality and intricacy. Although the marvelous effects had a great impression on me, I imagined all the nonexistent patterns that could present more respect to the instrumentals.

Next, I was shown a more interactive program called Tiltbrush.

I adjusted the goggles and entered an imaginary dark room. Using

two handheld devices, I painted the room with varying types of brushes, creating loops, streaks, spheres and many other patterns. When the music was cued, my art came to life. Based on their characteristics, the shapes lit up and danced. Walking around my creation in a three-dimensional space was especially fascinating; however, there was nothing unique about the movements. The patterns stayed in the same places and throbbed at the same times. I wondered what sound would look like if it was granted the freedom it lacks.

Allow me to take this idea a step further. Imagine controlling the visualization with personal adjustments and timing methods. You could assign miniscule intervals in a song to a shape or pattern, sync the pattern with the musical instrument and bring the designs to life with your own hands.

Sourceless light flows, explodes and transforms around you at the perfect

moments. In this scenario, music becomes subjective and the possibilities are endless. An audience would be captivated.

Could this be the future of entertainment?

There is a lot of potential in this idea. Similar music visualizer models exist, but the invention I’m suggesting allows for brilliant creativity and liberty in shape and sound. The only limitation is the imagination.

I’m waiting for the day that musicians utilize advanced visualization in their performances.

Introduce three-dimensional synchronous patterns of light into mainstream events, and every Chainsmokers show would sell out in seconds.

Of course, extracting this concept from virtual reality is a separate topic for another day — or century.

For now, I’m arguing that art should be allowed to dance. Let’s make it happen.

Police: Unofficial 2017 was ‘slowest year’ in long time

Patrick Wade was a student at the University from 2006 to 2009, back when he said Unofficial was at its peak.

Since then, Wade, communications director for the University of Illinois Police Department, said Unofficial has calmed down and has generally become less eventful.

For Champaign police Sgt. Joseph Ketchum, last year’s Unofficial was fairly tame, and it was one of the slowest years he had seen in a long time. Ketchum has been part of the Champaign Police Department for 20 years.

University and Champaign police gave about 114 citations last year for various liquor offenses. That’s the lowest Wade said he has seen in a long time.

“People were going about their business and having a good time, but for a large part doing it fairly responsibly,” Wade said.

There weren’t as many active parties last year. Ketchum said they had to break up about two or three.

Unofficial was running smoothly until about 10:30 p.m. on March 3 when Jonathan Morales fell off a balcony.

“Any Unofficial that we have a death is not a good one,” Ketchum said.

Both Ketchum and Wade agreed that this year’s Unofficial should be slower and have fewer activities going on than years prior.

“It was pretty tame. It was probably one of our slowest years in a long time,” Ketchum said.

One aspect that affects Unofficial participation is the weather. Ketchum said if the weather is good, there may be more people out, and if it’s not, more people might stay in.

Another factor both Wade and Ketchum attributed to a calmer Unofficial is fewer visitors.

“That was a big problem I think seven to 10 years ago, maybe, where all these people would flood into our campus, and that’s really what created the issues,” Wade said. “These are people from different parts of the state and sometimes from different parts of the country who are coming in; (they) didn’t have any respect for our campus (and) weren’t familiar with the different local laws that we have.”

Ketchum used to deal with visitors from places as far away as New York and Alaska. Last year, he said it seemed like the number of visitors decreased.

Wade noticed the University students who participate are fairly mellow, even though there always are a few who cause problems.

“People are generally pretty lowkey, respectful of our campus, respectful of the law and, most importantly, respectful of each other,” Wade said. “I think our students tend to be fairly moderate and reasonably responsible; have a good time but they’re still being responsible.”

The biggest concern with Unofficial is over-intoxication and binge drinking.

What makes Unofficial different than any other weekend is students start drink-

ing as early as 5 a.m. on Friday and continue drinking until Saturday.

Last year, there were around 23 hospitalizations due to intoxication.

Substance abuse is also a problem.

“Students sometimes use Unofficial as an excuse to kind of go crazy with different sorts of controlled substances like ecstasy and some other substances out there,” Wade said.

“Especially when you’re mixing that with alcohol, it can create a lot of problems too.”

A bar owner once compared Unofficial to a weekend with a home football game, Ketchum said. He doesn’t agree.

Wade made a similar comparison. He said a home football Saturday and Unofficial mirror each other: People start drinking early, continue to drink all day and even drink into the night.

What he said is different about Unofficial, however, is the attitude.

“When Unofficial happens, it’s more how drunk can I get, what sort of different ways can I rebel,” Wade said. “I think that mindset is different and that leads a lot of people down troubling paths where they get so intoxicated that they end up in the hospital or something like that, or they end up so intoxicated that the make some really bad decisions that can affect their academic career here at school or get them into trouble legally.”

Ketchum said the two are not similar because on no football weekend has there ever been a death.

far as I know of in 120 football games in the last 20 years, but we sure have had a death in the last 20 years in three of our Unofficials,” Ketchum said.

During Unofficial, Champaign, the University and Urbana work together to keep students safe.

“We work very closely with both cities: the different police departments, the mayors, different campus units. We’re all literally sitting around the same table when we’re in the weeks leading up to Unofficial,” Wade said. “So we all have the same goals. (The) number one goal is keeping people safe.”

Champaign is home to almost all the bars and many student residences. Urbana is a bit different.

“Urbana does not have as many of the residences we have. They really only have one bar — which is The Canopy (Club) — that is affected

by Unofficial,” Ketchum said.

“So we’re usually a little busier than Urbana is on Unofficial.”

One of the University’s top priorities is retaining the integrity of the learning environment.

“Our focus here (at the University) is maintaining the safety of our campus community, making sure people can live, research, study, all have a good time and stay safe,” Wade said.

To ensure that safety, Champaign has roughly 100 officers scheduled to work.

They start at 8:30 a.m. on Friday and work until 3 a.m.

medical personnel, and fire personnel are out checking balconies.

The bar age is also raised to 21 starting 10 a.m. Friday until 2:30 a.m. Sunday to prevent minors from attempting to drink in bars.

Wade wants to remind students of the medical amnesty policy. State law and University policy protect students from getting in trouble for calling 911 for someone who needs medical attention.

“I always tell people the police are not here to punish anyone; we’re here to keep people safe,” Wade said. “If you see something suspicious, you see someone in trouble, do not hesitate to give us a call.

An official Irishman’s guide to Unofficial Irish exchange students talk differences between UI, home

Katie Cullen, Cormac O’Cleirigh and Rob Keenan were all born and raised in Ireland.

The three foreign exchange students from University College Dublin are preparing to witness a celebration that has quite the reputation. This weekend, they will experience the University’s version of one of the most widely celebrated holidays in the world.

Unofficial St. Patrick’s Day is a celebration unique to the University where students embrace drinking festivities in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Traditionally, the University plans spring break on the actual Irish holiday, which is why campus bars have created their own date.

The students have noticed a consistent pattern since they’ve been on campus. Immediately after each of them mentions their Irish roots, University students tend to bring up Unofficial assuming the Irish students celebrate the same way back home.

Although there is an abundance of slang terms used among the Irish that refer to being drunk, such as “twisted,” “langered,” “dushty” and “transmoglified,” exceptionally high levels of alcohol consumption seem to be much more frequent in the U.S. But St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated differently in Ireland.

“There’s one similar celebration in Ireland called ‘ W h it ma s,’ where university students wake up at 6 a.m. and drink, but it is much more controlled and students seem to know their limits,” Keenan said.

He expressed that the party culture seems much more excessive and intense here.

O’Cleirigh and Keenan said the celebration is calm and collected in Ireland. They feel that the holiday is more notable in the U.S., especially in Chicago, where the sight of large groups of celebrants stumbling down the street in green apparel is ordinary in March.

“It’s a national day for Ireland, but it doesn’t really symbolize much.

It just celebrates a saint from hundreds of years ago who wasn’t even

Irish,” Keenan said.

There are many different versions of St. Patrick’s legacy. One thing historians do know for sure is St. Patrick was born and raised in Britain.

Back home in Dublin, Cullen and O’Cleirigh normally spend St. Patrick’s Day in town with family and friends, watching the parade or a rugby game, while Keenan celebrates in Kilkenny, Ireland, which is about an hour and 45 minutes from Dublin.

“A lot of tourists will go to the parade, but many Irish people just sit at home,” Keenan said. “I think they make a bigger deal of it in Chicago. When I heard that they dyed the Chicago River green, I was shocked; there’s nothing even close to that in Dublin,” O’Cleirigh said.

Cullen, O’Cleirigh and Keenan have planned to meet Irish exchange students from Purdue in Chicago on St. Patrick’s Day, whom they go to school with back in Dublin.

They each expressed immense enthusiasm and are looking forward to experiencing an American version of St. Patrick’s Day. The Irish students agreed that massive and remarkable celebrations of the Irish holiday are commonplace in the U.S. because of the history of Irish immigration.

“If you’re an immigrant to America, and you’re living in Chicago, you’re going to look back to Ireland much more than an Irish person will look at Ireland,” Keenan said.

The three students also agreed that a majority of St. Patrick’s Day parties revolve around the consumption of alcohol.

Regardless, the Irish students are eager to witness the sights and sounds of University students celebrating Unofficial this weekend.

“Basically, students get up really early and start drinking, and then go to class drunk and keep drinking all day,” O’Cleirigh said.

“We’ve heard that it can get pretty dangerous.”

Cullen and Keenan agreed with O’Cleirigh’s statement.

Unofficial St. Patrick’s Day has evolved from a happy hour promotion to an informal festival and has accumulated a notorious reputation for excessive drinking and untamed behavior.

“It’s honestly just an excuse to go drinking,” O’Cleirigh said. mollyz2@dailyillini.com

The Illini women’s golf team was back at it this past weekend in Peoria, Arizona, at the Westbrook Invitational.

The two-day invite marked the start of the spring season, one for which head coach Renee Slone has high expectations for.

“We’re coming off the strongest fall we’ve had in the history of the program, so we’re very much looking forward to this spring portion of the season and continuing to build on those successes,” Slone said.

Overall, the Illini finished ninth of 15 teams at the Westbrook Spring Invitational with a total score of 859, putting them at 5-under-par for the tournament. Senior Dana Gattone and junior Bing Singhsumalee were Illinois’ top performers over the weekend. They both finished tied for 24th and 2-underpar. Freshman Ali Morallos competed in the tournament as an individual and finished tied for 31st.

Also contributing to the Illini’s score was sophomore Tristyn Nowlin, who finished the invitational 1-under-par.

Gattone started the invitational with a round at par (72), including two birdies on par-5 holes. She followed that performance by going 2-under in round two before finishing on Monday with at par once again.

“It does give me a little bit of confidence moving forward that I started off this season so well,” Gattone said. “To come out after a long winter and playing inside and to be able to shoot under par, I think it’s a big accomplishment for me, so I think it proves that there’s just more to come this season.”

But Gattone recognized there’s more work to come before the spring season really heats up.

Elements of her game over the weekend weren’t completely satisfying — like her short game — and Gattone expressed plans to keep working out the little things in her game that hold her back from getting where she wants to go.

Turchin finds early season success

Doran Turchin is a man of habit.

His weekdays are scheduled from start to finish, and his weekends are spent on the baseball diamond.

The junior left fielder has been a core part of the Illinois baseball team since arriving as a freshman in 2016.

He started 51 games in center field in his first year, and started 48 games in the outfield his sophomore year.

Through that time, not

much has changed.

“It’s repetition for me now.

It’s my third year,” Turchin said. “Things really haven’t changed in those three years, so you get used to the routine pretty quick.”

On Mondays, Turchin wakes up for a 7:15 a.m. lifting session. After, he eats breakfast, usually at the Varsity Room at Memorial Stadium. Many Illinois athletes get breakfast and dinner there, and Turchin is no exception.

After eating, Turchin heads home to shower before

going to study.

For about three hours, Turchin applies himself to his academics before going to grab lunch, often at Subway or Cactus Grill, before practice.

Early hitting begins around 2:30 p.m. (after stretching), and some throwing warmups usually take place after that.

These both occur before team practice gets underway.

Dinner follows shortly after, usually at the Varsity Room, which serves a variety of dishes and occasionally has ethnically themed meals.

Since his classes are all stacked into Tuesday and Thursday each week, Turchin’s Wednesdays and Fridays mirror Monday.

Tuesday and Thursday are filled with classes for the communication major, and then it’s off to practice, or sometimes airports in Indiana if there is a road trip.

At the plate, Turchin’s approach has also remained much the same during his time at Illinois. “(Baseball) is a game of failure,” Turchin said. “So if you

SOBERING FACTS FOR UNOFFICIAL: PAID ADVERTISEMENT

Graduate workers are fighting for equal access to education and a living wage. After 11 months of negotiations, administration left us no choice but to strike.

We need your support!

FACT: Administration’s proposals will keep working class and poor students out of graduate programs. Admin wants unilateral say over who gets tuition waivers. Without them, grad employees could pay up to $32,000 to keep a job that pay less than $17,000. This would make graduate school inaccessible for all but the privately wealthy!

FACT: Graduate employees are paid below the cost of living in Champaign-Urbana.

By the administration’s own admission, the cost of living is around $22,000 a year.

FACT: The university cannot run without graduate workers. UIUC ranks 6th in the country for universities most reliant on grad labor. On day one of the strike, classrooms across campus were empty. Without grad workers, there is no UIUC. FACT: Our living conditions are undergraduate learning conditions. When grad workers aren’t supported by the administration, they seek work at other universities. You deserve the best possible TAs, not a revolving door or educators who are too poor to focus on their teaching .

FACT: We have been working 200 days without a contract. Administration seems to think this is fine. For many graduate workers, this means they don’t know if they can afford to return next year.

FACT: We love teaching undergraduates. We understand that the academic life is not going to make us rich, but we need working conditions that will allow us to continue our service to our students. We are asking for support so we can continue supporting you!

Top Illini moments from past eight semesters

For this year’s bracket in The Daily Illini, we kept the focus on Illini moments. We chose 16 memorable moments in Illini athletics (before Feb. 20) that have happened in the last eight semesters. This bracket encapsulates the Class of 2018 and the performances they saw in their four years here in Champaign-Urbana. The moments and seedings were chosen by our on-air sports editor Orri Benatar based on general popularity and scale. The pairings were chosen at random. In each paper, we will reveal how The Daily Illini sports staff voted round-by-round.

1. Lovie Smith hired

1. Baseball’s 27-game winning streak

Two of the biggest commitments in recent Illini athletics history. After Bill Cubit’s firing in March 2016, new Athletic Director Josh Whitman (in his second day on the job) hired former Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith to take over Illini football. A year later, Illini basketball landed a five-star combo guard Ayo Dosunmu to join Brad Underwood next season.

The Illini shocked the college baseball world by winning a miraculous 27 consecutive games. From March 30 to May 21, 2015 Illinois baseball was untouchable. In 2017, Josh Whitman announced the new Illinois Hall of Fame and its 28 inaugural inductees. Notable names included Red Grange, Dick Butkus, Deron Williams and Dee Brown.

Nick Hardy, Dylan Meyer, Thomas Detry and Charlie Danielson have made Illinois a golf school with conference titles and NCAA Final Four appearances. Brad Underwood was hired by Josh Whitman. His hiring took place over spring break, but that didn’t stop supporters from showing their approval of the new coach.

Former Illinois tight end Josh Whitman was hired as Illinois’ 14th permanent athletic director and has brought a positive and stern attitude toward Illinois athletics, implementing his “We Will Win” mantra. Isaiah Martinez will certainly go down as Illinois’ greatest wrestler. Three Big Ten titles, over 100 wins and two national championships.

Illinois sunk arch-rival Missouri with a Rayvonte Rice buzzer-beater from downtown in one of the most exciting Braggin’ Rights game. Two years ago in Columbus, Illini men’s gymnast Brandon Ngai won the pommel horse national champion at 16 years old. I didn’t even have my driver’s permit then.

In 2015, Illinois scored two touchdowns in the last two minutes to win 14-13 against Nebraska, the last score being a Wes Lunt throw to Geronimo Allison with eight seconds left. Trent Frazier sent Illini fans home happy on a few occasions in his incredible freshman season.

The State Farm Center welcomed students and fans to the newly renovated arena, dedicated to great Illinois coach and Illini Hall of Famer, Lou Henson. Malcolm Hill played his final Big Ten game on the court and willed Illinois to an upset win over Michigan State. Hill made many fans cry after his emotional interview post-game.

In spring 2014, former Illini football player Simon Cvijanovic accused former head coach Tim Beckman of “mistreatment” of himself and his teammates when it came to dealing with injuries. Beckman was fired three months later and Illinois football changed. Chris Tamas came to coach Illinois volleyball with a culture in place, but he took it a step further, leading to a Sweet 16 apperance this past season.

On Sunday against Virginia Commonwealth University, Illinois had a 5-1 lead after the sixth inning, but the Commodores crept back in, and in the eighth it was 5-3.

Turchin had yet to get a hit in the game, and he was focused on making a play.

His roommate, Jack Yalowitz, had just struck out. He had a message for Turchin.

“He just said to me, before I even got to the plate, ‘Just pick me up right here, Turch, pick me up,’” Turchin said.

He did.

The Oak Creek, Wisconsin, native seized on an outside pitch and belted it over the right field fence for a tworun homer, giving the Illini a commanding 7-3 lead.

It was the insurance the team needed to get the job done, and Illinois left Conway, South Carolina, with two wins after losing the first two.

“Going into that, I knew

I had to get the job done; I had to pick my team up,” Turchin said. “I was struggling throughout the game, and there was one opportunity right there where I could turn a bad day into a good day and help get the team a W.” Maintaining his focus on selecting the right pitch and getting back to his usual approach was what Turchin credited for the hit.

Illinois head coach Dan Hartleb agreed with his player’s assessment. He said not trying to pull pitches too often and staying in his comfort zone at the plate will be key.

“He’s got really good gap power and once he gets consistent with using the middle of the field, and then if it’s a little bit outside, driving it the other way, his overall production will go up,” Hartleb said.

“So I was really happy to see him make that adjustment and take an outside pitch and hammer it.”

Though the Illini have only played six games of the season, Turchin leads the team with three home runs and is on an early pace to easily beat his total of eight last season..

He’s not concerned with that though. For Turchin, it’s about results, not statistics.

If I had to take a total shot in the dark, I bet Spring is a big craft beer guy. I myself enjoy a nice craft beer, but being from St. Louis, I stay loyal to any Budweiser product over anything else.

Also, did I mention Spring is a Hall of Famer? That is a big factor here. He told me that when his players texted him congratulations on being named to the Illinois Hall of Fame class, he responded sarcastically with the Ron Burgundy, “I’m kind of a big deal” GIF. “Anchorman” is an all-time favorite of mine, so if worse comes to worst, I will just start looking at things around the room and saying I love them.

It’s a foolproof plan.

The University has set a trend with its softball coaches. Apparently it has to be part of the criteria that they have to be the nicest people ever. When I covered the softball team, Terri Sullivan – the first softball coach in school history at the time – was at the helm.

She was always so cool when I would show up to practice. It is weird when a coach actually seems happy to see media. When Tyra Perry took over, I was wondering if she could match Sullivan’s enthusiasm.

Once again, I have only had the pleasure of talking with her one-on-one just a few times, but I have heard plenty of good things from other people. She has been doing a solid job with the Illini softball team, and I am sure it’d be fun to hang out with her for a bit.

win a lot,” Turchin said. “That turns into Big Ten Championships and things like that, and those are memories you’ll never forget with your teammates and friends.”

He wants to bat well, but he realizes he is only one player and that team revolves around many working parts.

It’s about maximizing those parts for the best all-around production, not about one man’s batting average.

“If we win the Big Ten Championship and I hit .200, at least we won the Big Ten Championship,” Turchin said. “If (we) win the Big Ten Championship and I hit .300, it’s bonus-bonus. Now, say I hit .300 and we don’t win the Big Ten Championship, in my eyes it’s not a good season because we didn’t win the Big Ten Championship.”

I have been to my fair share of Underwood press conferences this year, so I basically know the guy. That is exactly how this works.

But really, Underwood seems like a great guy, and I could talk to him about basketball for hours. Just like tennis, I played basketball my entire life, but I can talk about basketball way longer than tennis.

But if the conversation branched off from basketball, I still think it would be fun to grab a beer with Underwood. He seems like a guy who has a killer man cave at his house, and I bet he is a big poker guy. And, if there was one person on this list who would forego the beer for a glass of whiskey, it is Underwood, and I respect that.

Also, he is very loud. I am very loud. I have no doubt in my mind we would have absolutely no trouble hearing each other.

The new Illinois volleyball coach has definitely established himself as a goofy dude, which is why he made it so high on this list. I have no idea what we would chat about over the beer.

I am basing this choice off things Tamas has done in the past. The costume contest at practice for Illinois volleyball was hilarious, and on his birthday, the man gave out free tacos at Taco Bell. If you want to make friends, you can never go wrong with free tacos. I didn’t get one of the tacos because of journalism rules, but in my eyes, it was the thought that counted.

Coaches, if you want to make it higher up on this list, give out free tacos.

The main thing Tamas has going against him is that out of every coach on this list, I feel like he is the one who would leave early to go home and take care of his

score, Morallos showed she could follow up a promising fall season with a successful spring by keeping pace with both Gattone and Singhsumalee. Morallos’ fall was marked by three rounds under par, including a low round of 67 at the Coeur d’Alene Resort Collegiate Sept. 26-27.

Coming off a strong start at two under, Morallos recovered after a second round of 1-over-par with a 71 on Monday, bringing her back to 2-under for the tournament.

“I chose to stay in the moment,” Morallos said.

“When thinking about how the front nine of round two went, what got me through it was definitely my commitment. Today, I kept that same personal commitment, and it really helped me keep things simple and just trust in my decision making.”

Sophomore standout Nowlin held on to a 1-under finish at Westbrook despite a shaky third round. Nowlin went one under in backto-back in rounds one and two, only to face difficulty on the front nine during round three. Despite backto-back holes over par, Nowkids or something. He seems like a total dad.

2. Nick Fabbrini

If I would have written this list last semester, Fabbrini would’ve been No. 1 without hesitation. I spent a season covering the Illinois hockey team, and I still think it was my favorite team I have covered. The team is good year-in and year-out, and Fabbrini is an alumnus of the University.

That obviously gives him bonus points.

Fabbrini is just genuinely a good guy. He grinds to coach the hockey team, despite them not being a varsity sport, and he teaches little kids to skate all the time.

I don’t have much more to say because this was just an obvious pick for me.

As the Illini turn their attention toward Fairfax, California and the Meadow Club Women’s Intercollegiate, Slone feels that her team has the right mindset for success.

“The biggest challenge in this game is really mental,” Sloan said. “It comes down to managing ourselves and managing our expectations, and really being focused on the process and that was a thing that we did very well in the fall, staying focused on the things we can control — not getting caught up in the results, not getting caught up in the rankings and just taking care of the things we can take care of.”

It’s easy. When I went to Smith’s introductory press conference, and he was calling himself a polar bear. I had only one thought: “I would want to get a beer with this guy.”

Smith is the inspiration to this list. I would have never done this if he wouldn’t have been hired. I would have never even thought about it.

Talk to him for five minutes, and you will know what I am talking about.

I know for a fact that Rod Smith already has a little dive bar that he frequents in Champaign when he isn’t on recruiting trips, and when he walks in the door, every person in the bar turns and yells, “ROD!” excitedly.

That’s it.
