A fine tradition of quality gymnastics and student athletic success

By Dominic Burns | The Globe WORTHINGTON — The Worthington Trojans gymnastics team has a fine tradition of quality gymnastics and student athletic success under coach Joni Reitmeier. The key to it all is the mentality everybody on the team brings to practice every day. A theme of the Trojans season is perfection in reflection. “When we came up with the slogan, (the thing with) gymnasts tend to be perfectionistic. You know, it’s just part of it, because gymnastics demands perfection, and not none of us are perfect,” said Reitmeier. “(Gymnastics) wants you to stick your landings with perfect legs, perfect everything. And I think that we talked about you’re perfect the way you are. So, when we look at ourselves, we’re perfect, and we believe that. … we’re perfectly us.” The Trojans have three varsity returners currently on their roster, all of them seniors. Olivia Barber and Addison Gerber are joined by Adrian High School senior Hali Bullerman as key contributors from last year’s season. “We’ve had a very successful program, and I think part of being successful is having a good team atmosphere. I always try to emphasize that everyone on the team is important. Whether you’re a starter or not a starter, you still bring something important to the team because we’re all unique,” said Reitmeier. “We do have some veterans on the team that are leading us, and we have some that have super talent, but they haven’t been out there and competed at that level, or with that stress of being a varsity gymnast. We’ve only had one meet, and I think they did really, really well. We’ve had some other stress which comes with athletics. We unfortunately had a varsity all-arounder leave us … and we have two girls out with injury. Junior Jordis Weber, who was expected to be a key contributor for the varsity team, was injured during the two minute touch for balance beam at Luverne’s meet on

Tuesday. But Reitmeier said despite the blow, she was proud of her team’s response knowing that the varsity did not have a safety fifth score to work with. “Yesterday was a testament,” said Reitmeier. “We only have four girls, we can’t use JV because the JV meet is over, and those four girls stepped up to the plate. Three sticks (on the beam) in a row and only one fall. That says something about teamwork, that says something about effort, that says something about (attitude) — we’re going to have your back no matter what. Those are things in life that are forever — they will remember and learn and use when they have a job, because you have to be able to work with others and communicate with others and lift others up.” A rotation of Kenadie Thiner, Claire Meyer and Brooklyn Dykstra will participate on the Trojans varsity gymnastics team, which is in the pursuit of a 10th straight state tournament appearance. But one thing all the gymnasts and coaches agree on, is that bid is to be earned and not given. “Every girl has their part that they know they need to do,” said Barber. “We’re really just working on that to hopefully make it.” “It’s going to be a major team effort this year. I believe, 100% that we can do it, but we’re gonna have to be tough. We’re gonna be tough,” said Reitmeier. Joining Reitmeier on the coaching staff this season is Worthington graduate Presley Egers, who has worked closely with Gerber this past season to adapt Egers’ old floor routine — an upbeat athletic jig to the tune of Tina Turner’s Proud Mary — one of the most anticipated athletic showings this winter in the area. “It is phenomenal actually, she put on a show last night. I wish more people could see it. You know, the judges stopped me afterwards and just complimented me on how amazing she was and how amazing that routine is,” said Reitmeier. “Part of why she’s

so good on the floor is because she makes people feel something, and she just feels something. When I suggested this music — because Presley had done it so amazingly — and they have very similar personalities in many ways, I just knew it was going to be a right fit, and when she dances that full out with her tumbling, it is a show to see for sure.” The Trojans season will have seven home meets this season with a chance to make it eight if they qualify for the Class A State True Team Meet. Reitmeier and the team said they hope to see full stands with Worthington supporters. “I’m always just a little bit hurt at how successful these girls have been. And I just never feel like the community supports them, 100%,” said Reitmeier. “We’ve been state competitors for the last nine years — we’ve had a ton of individual competitors. A SOUTHWEST CHRISTIAN TRADITION By Scott Mansch | The Globe EDGERTON — For 25 years, Jamie Pap has been helping Southwest Minnesota Christian boys basketball teams win. And there’s no end in sight. Pap, who led the Eagles to a state championship as a high school senior point guard in 1999, coached his alma mater to the 2013 state title. The historically dominant Eagles have won five state championships and 15 section or sub-section championships since 1976. Pap’s 2020 team was 29-0 and arguably among the best teams in program history when the postseason was canceled because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Pap is starting his 19th season as head coach at Southwest Minnesota Christian. He has coached the Eagles to more than 350 victories and has never had a losing season. And he relishes the job and responsibility. “I live the dream every day,” Pap said. “I never get sick of it. I live on the family farm 27 miles from Edgerton north of Beaver Creek … I love coaching here at Southwest.” Several of Pap’s former Southwest Christian stars are currently playing college basketball. “It’s so good, so fun,” said Pap. Winning, of course, is enjoyable. In the Southwest Minnesota Christian boys basketball program it’s also very, very contagious. And that’s why a seemingly rebuilding Eagles team figures to be successful again this winter. “We should be able to compete with most teams on any given night,” Pap said. Mountain Lake and defending state champion Russell-Tyler-Ruthton could lead the way in the always competitive Red Rock Conference. “There are so many good coaches in the Red Rock,” Pap said. “Mountain Lake, Hills-Beaver Creek, Red Rock Central, Westbrook and MCC are always tough teams.” The Eagles are led this season by seniors Aidan Schaap and Trevin Prins. “Aidan is a lockdown defender who really does a good job driving to the hoop,” said Pap of Schaap, whose older brother Micah is a former SWC star now on the track team at Dordt University. “Aidan really developed a 3-point shot, too. We’re looking to him for defense and really attacking the rim offensively.” The southpaw Prins is an excellent offensive player.

“He can score the ball really well,” Pap said. “We’ll look to him to be the facilitator in the half court.” Last season, Southwest Christian won the Red Rock Conference championship and advanced to Marshall and the Section 3A semifinals before falling to eventual state champion Russell-Tyler-Ruthton. The Eagles, 24-5 overall last winter, will miss graduated stars Dawson Rieck, a Globe All-Area First Team pick, 6-7 forward Jarett Kuipers and 6-9 Bennett Talsma. Kuipers earned Globe All-Area Second Team honors, while Talsma suffered an unfortunate season-ending injury early in the campaign. The Eagles this season can count on juniors Gavin Rieck and Caden Sas. Gavin is Dawson’s younger brother and a fine prospect. So, too, is Sas. “Gavin will do a nice job for us and Kaden will run the point. He’s small, but super quick and does a great job taking care of the ball,” Pap said. Pap’s son, Ryan, is a 6-2 freshman guard who could also contribute to the Eagles this season. Southwest Christian annually plays a strong schedule. The Eagles opened their season Dec. 1 with an 85-71 win at Luverne and will play in Worthington next on Dec. 5.
