FFA is a Hansberger

family tradition BY JULIE BUNTJER The Globe

van Hansberger’s family has been involved in production agriculture for as far back as he can remember, and if all goes as planned, he will be the fourth in his family’s lineage to earn the Minnesota FFA Degree this spring. “My great-great-grandpa, Kenny Hansberger, started this farm here, but the Hansberger name has been here since after the Civil War,” shared Evan from the farm where his grandparents, Steve and Vernietta Hansberger still reside north of Worthington. Evan’s parents Tim and Susan do the majority of field and book work these days, though his Grandpa Hansberger is still heavily involved and Grandpa Craig Edwards assists during the busy seasons. While Evan grew up in town, he has spent many hours on the farm. His earliest memories of farm work were picking rock — a chore he still does for hours on end during the summer. As he’s grown older, he’s helped with more of the mechanical work on their farm equipment. “I remember picking rock as a kid, going out in the field for eight hours a day or 12 hours a day on our 4-wheelers,” Evan said. “(Also), getting parts, sweeping and unloading bins, helping Dad and doing whatever he asked me to do. “I really like working on stuff — fixing things and just doing general maintenance on our tractor and combine every year, and learning how everything works from inside and out.” The Hansbergers are solely crop farmers, growing both corn and soybeans. That wasn’t always the case though, said Evan, noting the buildings on the farm that housed cattle up until he was about 4 years old. Whether it was from eyeing those empty buildings on the farm, or helping friends out with their 4-H beef project in recent years, Evan has decided to pursue a career that involves the beef industry. “I plan to go to Iowa State University and study animal science and minor in ag business,” he said. “I want to be a beef cattle nutritionist and also have my own cow-calf operation. “I’m very interested in livestock,” he added. “I’ve always enjoyed being around them and taking care of them.”

HANSBERGER From Page 1

Currently a senior at Worthington High School, Evan is a four-year member of the Worthington FFA Chapter and now serves as its secretary. “Ever since I was a kid, when my brother started getting involved, I wanted to be in the FFA. I liked the community of it — leadership, talking to people, making friends, learning about agriculture, learning about the impact agriculture has not only on the community, but the whole world,” he said. “My dad, my grandpa and my brother (Eli) were all state FFA degree recipients.” In the FFA, Evan has kept records on three Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs) — his work on the family farm, and part-time jobs at Seed & Stem 12:27 and as a lifeguard at the Worthington Area YMCA. He joined the staff of the downtown Worthington floral shop in October 2022, and works primarily on Saturdays when he isn’t busy with sports. “I help customers with any of their orders or help with questions about their plants,” Evan said, noting he took Introduction to Floriculture and Floral Design classes at Worthington High School. “Sometimes I help Lauren (Weg) with flower arranging, but mostly I help customers and keep the shop in tiptop shape.” Evan’s lifeguard work keeps him busy once or twice a week at the YMCA, where he also practices as a member of the Stingrays swim team. Earlier this month, he earned his sixth trip to the state swim meet. He will compete in five events — the medley and freestyle relays, as well as the 50- and 100-meter freestyle races and the 100-meter breaststroke. In the fall, Evan plays soccer for the Trojans, and his spring sport is tennis. For his SAE, Evan tracks his hours worked and dollars earned, leadership skills gained, responsibilities and other information needed for his state degree application. The application also includes details about his chapter and community involvement and participation on Career Development Events. Evan has been a member of the Worthington FFA chapter’s Soils CDE team for the past three years — a competition that has expanded his knowledge about crop production immensely. As part of the contest, team members test topsoil,

subsoil and parent material for permeability, pH and the amount of gravel present. “I can relate that to here if my dad needs me to test soil to determine if we need to add potassium or nitrogen or phosphate,” Evan shared. “My dad also has me scout fields and do leaf samples of early stages of corn, which helps us to know if we need more nitrogen, potassium or phosphate.” Aside from the Soils CDE, Evan has also competed in the milk quality and Farm Business Management CDE teams, and will compete at the state level on the milk quality team this spring. Not long after that, he’ll help the family get ready for spring planting. “I help do repairs in the spring and get the planter ready,” Evan said. “I also haul seed out to the farm for planting.”In the fall, Evan gets to drive the grain cart, run the auger and help load the bins with newly harvested grain.

Outside of school and the FFA, Evan serves as one of the youth leaders at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Worthington, and will participate in National Youth Lead in St. Louis, Missouri next week. It will be his second trip to the gathering. He also assists the church elders and helps with offering as needed. Evan said he doesn’t yet know if he’ll return to his roots to raise cattle and work some day. “I’m leaving it up in the air at this point. It depends what my brother does, if he comes back or not,” he said. Eli, 20, will graduate this spring from Lake Area Technical College, Watertown, South Dakota, with a degree in diesel technology. Since Eli received a Build Dakota scholarship, he will need to work in South Dakota for three years following graduation. He has already secured a job with General Equipment in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he’s interned each of the past two summers.
