Ace is the place for wedding gifts, too ANDREA MAGANA Daily Globe WORTHINGTON — Schwalbach Ace Hardware is known for its hardware items, home supplies and outdoor tools. However, apart from handy supplies, it’s the perfect gift store for a soon-to-be bride and her groom.

Recently engaged couples are quick to fill out gift registries at stores like Target, Wal-Mart and Shopko and may not realize the advantage of completing a registry at Ace Hardware.

“If they’re going to be getting married in the next

year or two, (a couple) can come in and fill out our gift registry,” said Jeri Kruger, Schwalbach Ace Hardware’s gift and houseware department manager.

Ace Hardware offers everything from house paint to gift cards. The gift and home décor department has been expanding and now includes items like wall décor, candles, clocks, wedding decorations, small appliances and more.

“In the last five years we have enlarged our gift and home décor department,” said Kruger.

A wonderful winter wedding Coffmans celebrate nuptials in late February JANE TURPIN MOORE Daily Globe WORTHINGTON — The cold never bothered her anyway, so Allison (Jaycox) Coffman chose to embrace not only a snowy wedding gown but also the white of late winter as the backdrop for her Feb. 27 wedding.

For a young woman who served as Worthington’s first Winterfest queen in 2010, it was fitting that Coffman fretted about her wedding day’s unseasonably warm high temperature of 53 degrees.

“It was the first time in many years it had been so nice on that date,” recalled Coffman.

“I was upset because I thought all the snow would melt, but in the end

Even though the gift registry purchase percentage is high, many out-of-town couples often feel they don’t need to sign up for small stores like Ace Hardware.

“If they can get past the fact that they don’t live here, and they don’t have to register at Target, they will have a great experience,” said Kruger. “If someone is from a distance, they can call in and give us a price range.”

“I’m a big snowmobiler and snow boarder, so I love snow and have never been upset about the cold.”

With June through September being the most popular wedding months, the Coffmans soon realized they’d unwittingly gained a huge benefit with a Feb. 27 date: Less competition for venues and vendors.

Coffman, the daughter of Chad and Kristin Jaycox of Worthington and a 2010 Worthington High School graduate, met her future groom — Bennett Coffman, a native of West Des Moines, Iowa — during her undergraduate days at Iowa State University in Ames.

“He’s one year older than me, and we met at a fraternity/sorority event,” explained Coffman.

“We discovered we had a lot of common interests — we’re both runners, animal lovers and huge Cyclone fans-so we started talking and that was it.”

After a few years of dating, during which the pair completed their respective educations (Bennett Coffman is an industrial engineer while his bride graduated from ISU with a biology degree in 2013 before completing a

WINTER from Page D5 “We had no problem reserving or finding any vendors,” confirmed Coffman. “Almost all of them were available, but we know that could have been an issue in the late spring or summer.”

Initially, the Coffmans entertained the idea of being married in Ames, where they met, but the newlyweds are glad everything worked out for a wonderful Worthington wedding.

“Ultimately it came down to the budget and ease of planning,” said Coffman, noting that her mother, Kristin, was “fantastic” about helping execute details locally, which allowed Coffman to concentrate more fully on her job as a biology teacher at Muscatine [Iowa] High School in Muscatine, Iowa — a nearly six-hour drive from Worthington.

The Coffmans/Jaycoxes took full advantage of the recently expanded wedding services in the greater Worthington area, enlisting the services of Minneota-based wedding planner Lisa Gillund of Johnny & Dottie to

help with some of the particulars.

With the service centered at Coffman’s home church, First United Methodist in downtown Worthington, everything else seemed to naturally fall into place.

“Being at my home church felt very comfortable,” said Coffman, who was baptized and confirmed in the same spacious sanctuary where she said her wedding vows.

“It was very meaningful to us and it was a very welcoming environment, and Pastor Daren [Flinck] was fantastic,” she noted. “He counseled with us over Skype, and he made everything so comfortable.”

With the groom’s dinner taking place at the Historic Dayton House (a short walk from the church following the Friday evening rehearsal), Coffman was again delighted to introduce their many out-of-town guests and wedding party members to a local treasure.

“They were very impressed with its quality and location,” stressed Coffman. “We had plenty of room and it was a great showcase, a great way to feature our town and its history.”

Coffman borrowed two of her favor-

ite colors — navy and red — to outfit the six bridesmaids, as well as offer decorating panache.

“I definitely wanted some red involved, and navy provides a nice, traditional neutral to it, but we wanted to make sure it didn’t come off as too patriotic,” she said. “I think we managed to have a classic touch minus a patriotic feel.”

Natural elements and accents — befitting an outdoors-loving couple and a biology teacher — were also keys to the wedding décor.

“I love the smell of evergreens, and we were really going for a wintry theme, so we incorporated that into the tables and decorations,” mentioned Coffman.

“There were woodsy notes with pines and pine cones — even the groomsmen had pine cones in their boutonnieres.”

Additionally, the Coffmans planted a small pine tree together during the service, at the point where many couples light a unity candle or mingle vases of colored sand.

WINTER from Page D6 “We thought it would be symbolic to plant a ‘unity tree,’ with the idea that it represented marriage, long-term growth as a couple, establishing roots and looking together toward the future,” observed Coffman.

The Worthington Event Center provided the perfect setting for the Coffmans’ reception and dinner, with Hi-Lo Catering of Lakefield in charge of the food and D.J. Jayden Thomas spinning the tunes that kept their guests dancing well into the evening.

“A lot of the vendors were recommended to us by the event center staff, and it all came as advertised,” assured Coffman.

“Our guests really raved about the small-town vibe, and everything went so smoothly.”

Nevertheless, Coffman admits they had a few near

misses in their planning efforts.

“I didn’t pick out my dress until last summer — it was not the first thing I did — and when I started shopping for one in Sioux Falls, I kept hearing, ‘Ooh, you’re kind of cutting it close,’” laughed Coffman.

“But I knew exactly what I was looking for so it didn’t take me long to find the one I wanted (a lacy cap-sleeved gown with a keyhole back), but looking back, I realize I probably shouldn’t have waited as long as I did.

“It ended up requiring some extra travel in December and January to get the fittings done, and that was probably one of the more difficult parts.”

Also, the Coffmans at first thought they could obtain their marriage license in Iowa or Minnesota, but it needed to be a Minnesota license for a Minnesota wedding.

Other “across the years” assistance came from the stylists of Lakeshore Clips, where Coffman’s hair had been cut and styled throughout her girlhood, and from Rickers Photography, where Coffman’s portraits were regularly taken during her childhood and as a high school senior.

Now, as the Coffmans settle in at their Muscatine, Iowa, home with their two cats, Chip and Pepper, and prepare to attend numerous weddings of friends and classmates over the coming

Food and cake are said to satisfy the soul, but beautiful floral decorations satisfy the eyes.

The floral part of the complete wedding package requires that the couple purchase all of the main wedding floral arrangements with Hy-Vee, including the bride’s bouquet, the bridesmaids’ flowers, boutonnières and the corsages.

Roses used to be a popular wedding flower, but today numerous floral arrangements are used in weddings.

“Every bride has a completely different idea for the flowers they want

in their wedding,” said Samantha Sholes, Hy-Vee’s floral manager.

With all of the different floral options, a bride also has to take into consideration the season of the year.

Some flowers are only accessible during a specific season and may not be available for their wedding.

“We do our best to accommodate to what they’re looking for, but sometimes that’s out of our hands,” said Sholes.

Couples should order their floral arrangements six to eight weeks in advance to give the floral department time to order the flowers.

Sholes also agrees with Bartosh, saying that the best way to have a stress-free wedding is to “be prepared.”

“Have an idea of what you want, and don’t second-guess yourself,” said Sholes.

‘Until Death Star do you part’ Couple enjoys unique, ‘Star Wars’-style wedding RYAN JOHNSON Forum News Service A week ago, in a banquet room not far, far away, a couple tied the knot after 12 years together.

But first, David Bye had to put a forceful stop to insolent comments by a groomsman that threatened to halt the ceremony.

“I find your lack of faith disturbing,” Bye said, squeezing his hand together and causing the groomsman to fall to his knees, gasping for breath, until officiant Leland Whitehurst II urged Bye to stop.

Things went off with a hitch after that — and Bye’s “Force choke” of the disobedient Jedi groomsman certain-

ly wasn’t the only reference or joke during this May 21 wedding at the Fargo Holiday Inn that took its inspiration from “Star Wars.”

Bye and his fiancee, Melissa Reimer, dressed the part. He wore a Jedi-style black robe — the officiant referred to him as Anakin Skywalker, after all — and Reimer took a cue from the white lace dress worn by Padme Amidala during the character’s secret wedding to Skywalker.

Whitehurst gamely served as the officiant, delivering lines that twisted movie quotes into a loving tribute to the couple. He’s presided over weddings, but this was the first time he had to grow a longer beard so he’d look more like Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Things were good until they recently watched the latest film, last year’s “The Force Awakens,” to brush up on the basics.

“After we saw the movie, I’m like, ‘Jim, we’re the bad guys!’ “ Austin said.

“But we’re not Kylo Ren,” her husband countered.

Kylo Ren was there, too, at least a 9-year-old version of the angsty villain portrayed by the officiant’s son, Leland Whitehurst III. It was a family affair for the Whitehursts. Michelle, the officiant’s wife, went as a character from “The Clone Wars,” Asajj Ventress, and their daughters, Pearl, 14, and Gabby, 7, both attended as heroine Rey.
