While the 2014 season will ultimately be a forgettable one for Steve Spurrier’s team, the Gamecocks ended the year on a high note with a 24-21 win against Miami in the Duck Commander Independence Bowl. With the victory, South Carolina finished the season with a winning record (7-6) for the seventh straight year. Junior running back Mike Davis, who announced he will forgo his senior season to enter the NFL Draft, ended his career at South Carolina with 74 all-purpose yards and a receiving touchdown in his final game.

Gov. Nikki Haley looks ahead to 2015 Gov. Nikki Haley plans to focus on increasing the number of jobs, reforming education, improving infrastructure and reforming ethics in her upcoming term.

“You’re going to continue to see jobs, but with more of an emphasis on workforce training — making sure it’s our South Carolinians that get those jobs,” she said in an interview with The State newspaper.

Haley said she plans to reform education throughout the state for all children. Over the next 20 years, the Department of Transportation needs an additional $1.5 billion annually in order to repair roads and bridges into good conditions, details of which Gov. Haley plans to announce the details over the next few weeks.

In the wake of the removal of eight sheriffs and the indictment of the speaker of the House, Gov. Haley said she believes that ethics must be taken seriously and that elected officials must be aware of the law.

South Carolina native joins ‘Glee’ cast Noah Guthrie, a SC native, will be featured in the sixth and final season of the Fox network show “Glee,” despite not having any previous acting experience, The State reported.

Guthrie received attention nationwide when he posted a video of him performing an acoustic version of “Sexy and I Know It” by LMFAO on YouTube. He was asked to audition for the television series, and he received a phone call while he was on tour in support of his music career.

The former Greer High School student will play a new McKinley High School student name Roderick who joins the glee club. So far, 10 of the 13 episodes for the season have already been finished, and Guthrie is a part of all but two of them.

According to Guthrie, filming for the final three episodes of the show will be completed in February, after which he will focus on his music career.

Over 40 world leaders from Europe to Africa joined over one million people in a march from Place de la République to the center of Paris on Sunday as a display of solidarity and defiance following the terrorist attacks that killed 17 people in France, The New York Times reported. The Palestinian president and the Israeli prime minister walked arm in arm during the march.

The Interior Ministry estimated that between 1.2 million and 1.6 million people participated in the march. Both the crowd and the victims of the attacks included Jews and Muslims, some of whom said they wanted to show that the terrorists had not acted in their names.

“Indignation. Resistance. Solidarity. I am Charlie,” read an invitation to the event that circulated on social media.

Families of the victims walked together, sobbing in some cases. Some held up the names of their deceased loved ones and wore white Charlie Hebdo headbands in honor of the journalists killed Wednesday at the office of a satirical newspaper.

USC provost takes chancellor position Hannah Jeffrey

In a few months, USC Provost Michael Amiridis w il l head to t he W i ndy Cit y to t a ke on t he chancellor post at the University of Illinois Chicago.

Amiridis, who currently serves as USC’s chief academic officer and executive vice president for academic affairs, will travel to Chicago after more than 20 years at USC as a professor, researcher and administrator. Pending UIC Board of Trustees approval, he would succeed Paula Allen-Meares, whose six-year term as chancellor will end Jan. 15.

Trustees will vote whether to approve Amiridis the same day.

“I have been given opportunities to do all of the academic stuff and oversee all the academic function and work in a very broad environment,” Amiridis said of his time at USC. “I think that, from this perspective, I’m ready ... I feel confident that I’m ready for it.”

In the meantime, USC President Harris Pastides is moving to form a search committee and start a nation-wide search to fill the soon-to-be-vacant provost position.

“My intention is to identify exceptional candidates representing diverse backgrounds and to invite finalists to campus later in the spring semester,” Pastides said in an email to USC faculty. “I hope to have a new provost in place before the 2015 fall semester begins.”

Council and Council of Academic Deans, Amiridis said though the move is a bittersweet one, but he’s anticipating a smooth transition.

“We are confident that this will be achieved with no disruption to our day-to-day operations and long term plans,” he wrote. “I strongly believe that our

academic enterprise is in excellent shape right now and no change in personnel can affect its current state or future potential.”

Pastides is expected to name an interim provost after Amridis is expected to leave USC on March 15. If approved in January, Amiridis would begin his term March 16.

Amiridis was selected from four finalists who had been narrowed down from 55 candidates in the university’s eight-month search.

Thomas Hardy, U IC’s executive director of media relations, said the chancellor search process took a bit longer than it normally would have, due to the fact that the university system was searching for a new president, as well.

“We wanted to make sure [search for a president] was completed and make sure that the new president would have a key role in the selection for the chancellor of the Chicago campus,” Hardy said.

“Dr. Amiridis is an accomplished administrator on a flagship research campus, with a proven record of building academic and research excellence,” UIC President Robert Easter said in the release. “He also shares our vision that universities play a critical role in not only transforming the lives of students, but driving progress for our state and nation.”

Easter will retire at the end of June 2015, and Timothy K illeen will take on the role, as the university’s 20th president.

Kappa Sigma members must find new housing after the chapter loses its charter.

A f t e r US C ’s K ap p a Sigma chapter’s charter was withdrawn last month, Judge Casey Manning ruled that the 30 students living in the fraternity house needed to find alternative living arrangements before the start of this semester.

The f rater n it y ’s char ter was revoked for the next five years after several violations, including hazing, drug use and

alcohol use. The chapter plans to appeal the charter decision come February, according to The State.

Kappa Sigma had been on probation since 2011 for alcohol v iolat ions, which ended in August.

Kappa Sigma follows Delta Tau Delta, Alpha Tau Omega and Sigma Phi Epsilon as the fourth fraternity to close since 2011. Delta Tau Delta was also removed from campus earlier in the fall semester.

USC Yik Yak threat calls attention to social media downsides

People will still die.”

M at t h e w s p o s t e d f u r t h e r responses saying that “everyone will see” and that “I will never chill … Until they all pay.”

He was charged with breach of peace, nonagg r avated i n nature and the unlawful use of telephone by t he USC Police Depa r t ment . Upon h is a r re st , Matthews admitted to posting the com ment s. T he c a se is c u r rent ly awaiting deposition.

“The defendant’s actions caused panic/ fear in the community,” the arrest warrant stated. “A police report was completed due to the fear that he instilled, and several Yik Yak comments were made indicating fear.”

‘W HEN IT GOES BAD, IT GOES REAL BAD’ Robert Valois, a USC professor in the Arnold School of Public Health, said it’s easy for people to read that post and think of the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007 that resulted in 33 deaths or similar cases.

“A school is statistically the safest place to be, but when it goes bad, it goes real bad,” Valois said.

“Thisisnotsomethingthat’sgoingto goaway.It’ssomethingwe’regoingto have to get better at dealing with.”

Valois said with social media making the world a much smaller place and conf licts around the globe, it’s necessary to take all such threats or instances of cyberbullying seriously.

“Here’s an angr y person, and Lord k nows what he’s angry about … You’ve got to take that, unfortunately, as a serious threat because in the environment we have today, there are just too many people that are just angry at something and they’ll take their anger out on innocent people,” Valois said. “You can’t take anything for granted.

You just can’t blow off a comment like that.

Anytime someone uses a word like that, you just don’t know where they’re going to show up and where they’re going to do their damage. You’ve got to be proactive.

The Yik Yak, Inc., which was created by two Furman University graduates in 2013, advertises the app as a live feed that enables users to “share [their] thoughts with people around [them] while keeping [their] privacy” and “control what’s hot,” but posts have sometimes included threats and hate speech.

S C H O OL S , S T U DE N T S TA K E ACTION In November, 12 student leaders on USC’s campus tried to take action about the potential negat ive ef fects of Yik Yak on college-aged students through an open letter. Leaders that signed this letter included representatives of Student Government, Fraternity Council, Sorority Council, Carolina Productions, multicultural organizations, Dance Marathon and an athletic organization. “[Yik Yak] threatens our community for several reasons. It gives power in its anony mit y for people to lose integrit y, promote bigotry and disrespect the rights and properties of others,” the open letter read. “Furthermore, it allows for no personal accountability for foul words and crude statements. It allows distortion of the truth and churns rumors that are not constructive to our community and our own personal progress.”

The letter went on to say that Gamecocks “are

better” t h a n m a k i n g hatef ul, illegal and t h reaten i ng posts on social media.

It reminded students of the Carolinian Creed a n d a s k e d t h e m t o b e “positive and encouraging” even on social media.

“There’s a lot of power in being anonymous, but that power can really hurt someone,” said Lindsay Richardson, student body president and a signer of the letter. She said she encourages students to think twice before they post on social media.

USC is not the only one taking action against the app. According to the Associated Press, Clemson is now considering banning the app after racially offensive posts. Leon Wiles, the university’s chief diversity officer, told The Greenville News that a group of mostly black students asked for the ban.

Nor wich Universit y in Vermont and Utica College in New York have already banned Yik Yak through the school’s wireless networks.

‘A WHOLE NEW FRONTIER’ Many people believe the impact of social media outlets such as Yik Yak are not small and can even become cyberbullying.

“The ef fects can have long-ranging ps ycholog ic a l ef fec t s t hat cou ld dea l w it h substance abuse, anorexia, depression, suicide,” Valois said. “You can break your arm, but if someone breaks your spirit, it takes you longer to recover from something psychologically than it does physically.”

Valois believes this comes in part from the power of anonymity. He worries that some students will lose the ability to communicate through forms other than social media and that hiding behind social media in situation of aggression can have extremely severe consequences.

“When I grew up, bullying was there, but it was in your face, it was physical,” Valois said.

“Now you can cause a lot of havoc and not have to face someone face to face, and I think that’s a problem. I think it adds to the magnitude of the problem and it adds to the negative psychology of the problem.”

Bradley Smith, a professor in the College of Education at the Universit y of Houston and a former USC professor, said t hat alt hough psycholog ists had made a lot of headway in research about traditional bullying, cyberbullying is a whole new area.

“It’s a whole new frontier for psychologists,” Smith said. “I think they’re just starting to get their heads wrapped around it.”

Sm it h pred ic t s t hat soc iet y w i l l see new ways of dealing with bullying. Cyberbullying eliminates bystander support, which psychiatrists identified as one of the most important elements of traditional bullying.

Smith said he foresees an emphasis on ways to report inappropriate message on social media sites.

THE CHEMISTRY OF IT ALL Valois believes that one reason social media can have such negative effects is because of the lack of coping skills victims have, since most college-aged

students do not have the life experience to have these skills do deal with cyberbullying or similar forms of threats and harassment.

Additionally, the frontal lobes, which control decision-making and problem solving, are the last parts of the brain to develop. The frontal lobes usually mature around ages 22-25, making it much easier for college-aged students to make posts on social media they’ll later regret without giving it a second thought.

“I think we’ve created k ind of a scar y environment with social media — powerful, powerful upside and powerful, powerful downside,” Valois said. “We’ve eliminated so many communicable diseases that I really worry about the mental health.”

There are consequences for bot h perpetrators and victims of harassment on social media. Eric Grabski, spokesman for the USC Department of Law Enforcement and Safety, said the threat on Yik Yak USC saw in October should serve as a reminder of the these consequences.

“It’s important to remember that threatening someone on social media is illegal,” Grabsk i said.”It’s an example of the consequences, but also of someone coming forward and reporting it. Bullying is not a crime in and of itself, but the things that accompany it can be crimes.”

WHEN NEGATIVITY THRIVES USC has dealt with several victims of forms of harassment such as cyberbullying and cyberstalking, according to Corey Ingram, program coordinator for the Off ice of Sexual A ssault Violence Intervention and Prevention, “USC, along with every other aspect of society, has experienced how social media has changed our environment. It is now something that is studied in the classroom and used by university offices to share their messages with students,” said Erin Kitchell, Coordinator of Student Outreach.

“We’ve also seen students post hurtful comments directed towards individuals and organizations.

If there have been two or more incidents of bullying or stalking, USC Police Department can become involved. Ingram said that once this happens, incidents rarely continue. The Office of Student Conduct also works to ensure the university’s environment is as safe as possible through a conduct code, which it upholds in such

These tips include limiting the number of friends or followers you have on social media and understanding the privacy settings of these sites.

Kitchell said that these tips still aren’t enough, however, and it is up to students to decide exactly how they make use of social media.

“W hile campus administrators can educate students about the dangers of what they post online, students themselves should step up and hold each other accountable,” K itchell said in an email. “This means not up-voting a hurtful comment because you think it is funny. It means thinking before you post. Most of all, it means if you’re in conf lict with someone don’t tweet about it or text someone else about it. Have a constructive conversation with that person to resolve the confl ict.”

Your online identity is a reflection of who you are,” Kitchell said. “Even if what you post is anonymous and it is nothing a potential employer or your mom will see, at the end of the day you need to feel good about how you contributed to our community. Comments made in the online world can still have very real world effects.”

“Society is so advanced, and that’s the way of the world now,” Ingram said. “A lot of times a situation gets to a drastic point before they realize they need some kind of help.”

In Sept. 2014, the University of A labama put a women’s residence hall on lockdown and asked sorority women especially to remain inside following threats made on social media. The University of Georgia dispatched a bomb squad following t hreats on social media, and t he student responsible was ordered to leave Clarke County.

“Th is is not somet h i ng t hat’s going to go away,” Valois said. “It’s something we’re going to have to get better at dealing with.”

How to keep your resolution in the

We’ll set a physical activity and healthy eating goal and we’ll get to go after those goals so they can make shorter and more precise goals that way and then they can build momentum off of reaching those goals,” Crowley said. “And ultimately, what’s going to happen is that they start losing weight by hitting these other goals.”

Kishi Bashi cut his teeth on psych pop with Of Mont real and his sy nt hpop band Jupiter One, but he’s hit new highs with “Lighght.” The album is maximalist pop, layering in violin, synth and plinking strings, but always to a purpose.

Lead single “Philosophize In It! Chemicalize With It!” is bubbly, triumphant fun, and “Carry on Phenomenon” is a pop song that somehow feels like an epic journey. However, what’s truly striking about “Lighght” is its depth of tone.

The album as a whole is bittersweet, spiritual storytelling, and it’s amazing that it manages to stay as fun as it does throughout.

It may have been released on April Fool’s Day, but Mac Demarco’s “Salad Days” is no joke. The new album brought our favorite gap-toothed Canadian the attention he’s deserved all along. His gentle voice and synthy love ballads make a confusing match for his nicotine-fueled aesthetic, reminiscent of a stray dog and his on stage shenanigans, but there’s no denying that Demarco’s music is catchy.

Compared to his past releases, “Salad Days” solidified Demarco’s niche in lo-fi jangle pop. The dreamlike, psych feel of this release is probably what made it one of my most played albums on Spotify this year. From start to finish, not a single track falls through the cracks, with the album favorites being “Jonny’s Odyssey” and “Passing Out Pieces.”

Mac Demarco is notoriously a wild man in the limelight, but behind the mic he’s charming enough to introduce to your parents.

Yes, a country music album selected as the best album of the year. By a newspaper writer. At a college. But what makes Sturgill Simpson’s 2014 album accessible to Luke Bryan haters is its new spin on a classic sound. Taking the vintage tunes of outlaw music and mixing in some psychedelic rock elements, these country songs search for peace of mind amongst demons, drugs and heartache.

Simpson’s lyrics are about the lost man yearning on the open road rather than “chilling on a dirt road.”

He seems to be a once-religious, simple country boy who’s letting out all his unease with the world around him, thanking God for “this here life of sin.”

Experimental rock groups Ningas Tongas and Fishwives both disbanded as long time members are studying abroad and moving away.

Ningas Tongas could only end with a house show.

T he ba nd , a long w it h fel low rockers Fishwives, played their fi nal — for now — Columbia show Friday night.

They’re splitting up, thanks to simple geography. Guitar player Sam Forst is heading to Prague, and drummer Jake Toedtman is leaving for Asheville.

Though the band can be described as noise rock, that doesn’t quite hit t he nail on t he head — but who needs a genre, anyway? They’re hell-

raisers with a deep passion for music.

“I don’t really know what genre we fall under, and I think part of it is not being interested in what genre we fall under,” said Eric Roper, fourthyear English student. “It’s more the drive for a certain aesthetic. I guess we were just trying to come up with something different.”

They’re prolific in the local scene – Barrett and Toedtman make up experimental noise pop group Giant

Germ, and Toedt man and Forst work with A nna R idenour in the punk/surfrock band Fishwives.

Fishwives joined Ningas Tongas i n s ay i n g g o o db ye l a s t Fr id ay.

With Ridenour off to Istanbul for the semester, none of the band will be in Columbia for long. But they are leaving a legacy, as their first album, “Callaphone,” will be out on Bandcamp soon.

Forst and R idenour aren’t just bandmates — they’re also boyfriend and girlfriend.

“One of the biggest reasons this ba nd happened wa s bec au se we were dating,” Ridenour, a third-year history and anthropology student,

said. “It makes pract icing really easy.”

T he t ight-k n it mu s ic i a n s col labor ate on t hei r mu sic a nd work hard on their work, but their live shows leave the most lasting impressions.

Ningas Tongas is notorious for their performances, possibly because audience members leave with ringing ears a nd, af ter one par t ic u larly chaotic show, pizza on the ceiling of the venue.

TONGASPAGE8 Because of a hankering for Little Ceasars, Ningas Tongas stopped to grab some food along the way and had a pizza left over during the show — as a result, the audience, the walls and ceiling fan was covered in sauce and grease.

“I feel like performance is a big component of the whole project because it’s a full experience, not just sitting at your desk listening to it with headphones,” Roper said. “It’s another venue of expression, as if it were another instrument.”

And while this past Friday’s show lacked the pizza, Ningas Tongas brought a hefty audience eager to bid them farewell.

“We’re just moving apart,” Roper said, “but that’s the way it goes.”

Things have changed for Coldplay since the band’s fi rst album, “Parachutes,” was released in 2000. Lead singer Chris Martin’s recognizable voice has been on the radio for a decade and a half, and this album — like most of the others — has several hits. “Always in My Head,” starts the album slowly, with a dark longing melody, eventually moving to quicker tempos and catchier tunes, like “Oceans” and “A Sky Full of Stars,” the album’s best known hit. Overall, the album is easy listening, and each track flows effortlessly into the next. Many early Coldplay fans will criticize the more popular songs because of their simple beats, used to appeal to the general public, but the lyrics and music of the album are still easy on the ears.

Ed Sheeran came back with another ode to love, lust, heartbreak and alcohol with his debut album “X.” The British guitarist’s appeal stems from his genuine charm, not his looks. The coffeehouse inspired artist seamlessly intertwines acoustic guitar with folk, rap, R&B and pop influences. His songs have never been mainstream, cookie-cutter pop and continue to defy standards of current radio hits with intricate ballads and rap paired with soulful choruses. His heart-wrenching melodies and lyrics make you want to find someone to love. The tracks are dynamic and each brings something fresh.

“Don’t” outs his cheating fling with an upbeat tempo and gritty raps while “Afire Love” is a heart-breaking track dedicated to his grandfather who passed away from Alzheimer’s disease. No song is the same and each is saturated with relatable, raw emotion. Whether it’s Sheeran’s chilling voice paired with piano or a full orchestra with manipulated beats, every tune is killer.

Run the Jewels, a pleasantly unusual hip-hip duo, consists of southern rapper Killer Mike and New York based El-P. Both halves spit fi re individually and together make a lyrical bonfire. “Run the Jewels 2” is also coupled with incredible production.

Notable tracks include “Close Your Eyes (and Count to F*ck)” and “Oh My Darling Don’t Cry.” The beats are raw, alternative and unique. “Run the Jewels 2” also has some notable feature artists like Zack De La Rocha from Rage Against the Machine.

Both really play off of each other’s verses, which indubitably is cool. In addition to hot rhymes, Run the Jewels have come out with some wicked music videos. It’s defi nitely an underrated hip-hop album of 2014.

The f ilm starts pushing buttons and bringing up the rivalry between the countries from the beginning. It’s no secret this movie is a direct hit at the outrageous behavior of an extremely dangerous nation and its leader, but the mood is so lighthearted that the audience actually forgets how serious t hat problem may be.

Dave Sk yla rk ( Ja mes Franco) is a caricat u re of A mer ic a n late -n ight t a l k show host s; over-emot ive and equipped with his own s ig n at u r e h a nd g e s t u r e s a nd catch ph rases — t h is cha rac ter cou ld not have been played by anyone other than Franco. He’s attached at the hip with his producer, Aaron Rapaport, played by Seth Rogen, who doubles as his slightly more logical, yet equally goof y best friend.

Their slapstick comedy and potty humor is exactly what is expected of the two actors, a nd t he r id ic u lou sness is maintained throughout the fi lm.

T here a re a v a r ie t y of cameos made by famous faces at the beginning of the movie a s t hei r cha r ac ter s m a ke appea ra nces on Sk yla rk ’s s h o w. T h e a b s o l u t e l y outlandish conversations that take place may be some of the funniest exchanges in the entire movie, just due to the sheer randomness.

A s t he f l ick cont i nue s, the plotline heavily abuses stereotypes about both North Korea a nd t he A mer ic a n government. For whatever reason, the CIA assigns the t wo g o of b a l l s a m i s s io n to assassinate the “chubby dude with a goofy haircut,” but things get messy along

t he way. Sk yla rk ends up spending a day partying with K im Jong Un, enjoying all k inds of A merican culture ( K at y Per r y, b a s k e t b a l l , sports cars and margaritas) a nd b ond i n g over d add y issues.

I f it ’s p o s s ible t o lo ok past all the impossibilities in the setting, the audience can sit back and enjoy the preposterous jokes a nd typical comedic shenanigans of the two main characters and the insanely violent and psychot ic leader of Nort h Korea.

The character development is ex t remely sha l low, but Sk ylark act ually seems to get more stupid throughout t he f ilm. M istakes are made, betrayals occur and misinterpretations cause all kinds of mayhem for the silly duo. As to be expected, Seth Rogen a nd Ja me s Fra nco resolve their problems with the silliest and probably most dangerous solutions.

I t w o u l d n’t b e a t r u e American comedy without a bizarre and violent end; by this point in the movie the audience is struggling to keep it toget her, alt hough t hey expect nothing less than the absolutely ludicrous climax.

W hen it ’s f i na l ly over, it ’s h a r d t o b e l ie v e t h i s f ilm act ually made it into produc t ion a nd onto t he screens in peoples’ homes.

There have been few films quite so A merican in plot, complete w it h st r ipp er s , explosions, bad dirt y jokes and late night television.

Regardless of the quality, it ’s ex ac t ly what is to be ex pected of Rogen a nd Fra nco, a nd t he aud ience knows it. A nd if you asked Dave Sk yla rk what ot her people think of him, he’d say, “They hate us ‘cause t hey ain’t us.”

The American Sweetheart has done it again — this year, Taylor Swift enthralled young women across the globe w it h her new a lbu m “1989.” She ditched her acou st ic sou nd i n t he majorit y of this album to joi n t he pop music movement , ob v iou sl y inspired by an 80’s-esque sound (hence the album name). Swift joined the “booty” craze with her hit “Shake It Off” and engages her boy-crazy public image Courtesy of Big Machine Records with “Blank Space. Swift maintains her fame by being herself – openly weird, comfortably awkward and by being girlishly emotional and enthusiastic. Even though Swift never does anything extremely outside of the box and her music seems mildly mediocre, she continues to produce top hits across the country every year since her big debut in 2006. If you don’t like her, the charts recommend you get used to her — this is definitely not the end of her career.

The indie music sphere welcomed another captivating album from St.Vincent in February 2014. T he s el f-t it le d album is A nnie Clark’s (stage name St.Vincent) fourth solo album and unleashes her innovative mu sica l t a lent w it h expertly composed pieces, topping the charts once again. The pieces represent t he complex instrumental and lyrical choices that St. Vincent makes in her work. She’s Courtesy of Loma Vista Recordings able to play the guitar, bass and keys herself and often incorporates string and brass instruments to give her music a fuller sound.

Critics call her style a baroque pop, indie-synth meld. Songs like “Rattlesnake” and “Prince Johnny” portray the melding of genres St. Vincent regularly embraces.

Clark’s slight, political lyrics reflect her reserved and self-confident personality.

And though her lyrics may seem indirect, they create a powerful image when accompanied by the instrumentals. With her musical talent and stunning creative performances, we can only expect more astounding work from St. Vincent in 2015.

More information needed in Kappa Sigma incident ISSUE USC has yet to address Kappa Sigma’s eviction OUR STANCE Students should be able to count on university input It’s t he begin ning of a new semester, and while many of us are looking forward to new classes and new experiences, 30 Kappa Sigma fraternity members recently found themselves in need of a new place to live.

The USC charter of t he fraternity was withdrawn for five years after an investigation revealed hazing, alcohol abuse and controlled substance violations. This may not sound like new news following Delta Tau Delta’s removal from campus in the fall and a handful of other organizations leaving Greek Village in recent history. But the kicker is how quickly the brothers have been kicked out of their house and how little has been said by the university about the fraternity’s termination.

house were told to find new housing accommodations by the start of this semester, and the rumors are moving almost as fast as the evicted brothers are. What we do know for sure is only what police reports and court records tell us: police raided the Kappa Sigma house on Oct. 20 and found drug paraphernalia and prescription pills, and a judge ruled the fraternity members would have to leave the house by Jan. 12.

We also know that members of Kappa Sigma are saying that the allegations unfair.

Everywhere in between is filled in with Yik Yak comments and gossip. And there isn’t a university statement to be found.

W hen Delta Tau Delta was removed from campus last semester, a conduct report outlining the of fenses was posted to USC’s Organizational Student Conduct website, but no such report has been submitted for the recent incidents involving Kappa Sigma.

W hile there may be a lot of sensit ive i nfor mat ion i n t h is case, including the privacy of the 81 students being accused of the alcohol and controlled substance v iolat ions, K appa Sig ma is

one of USC’s oldest and largest fraternities, and this is the fourth fraternity to be closed at USC since 2011.

Greek Life culture has a long way to go to put an end to hazing and alcohol abuse that it is associated with, and the university cannot do much to change this. However, the university can be more transparent with the student body and the community about what is going on in the Greek system and exactly what leads up to students getting evicted in the middle of the school year.

We are all members of t he student body, and we should be able to count on the university to tell us what is going on around us.

We should count on statements and information promptly as it becomes available. Silence creates poison because it allows room for speculation, and speculation almost always assumes the worst.

College kids are social animals.

If we don’t know the truth, we’re going to keep guessing, rumors will continue to spread and the social media posts will only grow more speculative. Give us the facts, so we can stop depending on hearsay.

January 4 was a Sunday. I rolled out of bed around ten and turned my TV to ESPN, a morning tradition I’ve held since I was about 7 or 8 years old. It was the second day of the NFL Wild Card round, and I was expecting to see NFL Live discuss Andy Dalton’s inabilities to win a playoff game or maybe a breakdown of DeMarco Murray’s second half rushes this season. What I saw, however, was a tough pill to swallow.

“Stuart Scott. 1965-2015.”

The longtime ESPN anchor passed away after his third long battle with cancer. He was 49.

For those of you that didn’t have the pleasure of watching Scott, know that he was a gamechanger in the world of sports reporting. He was a polarizing figure that taught us it was okay to go nuts when we saw a great sports moment, even if you were the one reporting on it. An alumnus of the University of North Carolina, Scott’s recaps of Duke-UNC basketball games were must-see TV. As a Duke fan, I always looked forward to watching him call the highlights, even in a Blue Devil defeat.

His smile lit up the room when the Tar Heels pulled out a win, and he would cheer dunks and fancy assists without a second thought. However, he was just as gracious in a defeat, giving credit to the winners where credit was due. He was never condescending; he never thought he was above anyone. He was simply a man that had a passion for sports, and he used his stage to share his passion with the world.

My fondest memories of Scott aren’t necessarily ones that directly involve him. They’re the summer days of Wiffle Ball with my friends, launching a ball over the roof of my house and screaming Scott’s classic “BOOYAH!” as I rounded the bases.

They reside as games of pickup basketball, where a tough rebound would be rewarded with a “Call him the Windex Man, ‘cause he’s cleaning the glass!”

Nailing an oral presentation in class would earn you the distinction of “cool as the other side of the pillow.” Scott was the wordsmith of SportsCenter, and he had a quip for any and every situation.

Above all, Scott was a fighter. He was a role model to those struggling with adversity as he battled his cancer with everything he had. During his 2014 ESPY Awards speech, he was quoted as saying, “When you die, that does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live and the manner in which you live.”

And in that way he did beat cancer. He lived his life deliberately, with real purpose. He, in the words of the late Jim Valvano, “never gave up.”

So thank you, Stu, for your poise, for your resolve and for your fight. You truly were as cool as the other side of the pillow.

On-campus housing visitation limits logical Kathleen Schipano Second-year print journalism student The results of on-campus housing visitation voting are in, and everyone is still upset. Someone didn’t vote, someone hate s t hei r room m ate, someone thinks the whole system is unfair and regardless of the result, someone is unhappy.

If you don’t live on campus, here’s a crash course: certain buildings are under Plan B visitation policy, in which opposite sex visitation ends at 2 a.m. In residence halls that operate under this plan, voting is held at the end of the first semester and students can vote to move to Plan C visitation in t he second semester, meaning overnight opposite sex visitation is permitted on Friday and Saturday nights. In these same residence halls, it is required for students to check in all of their guests and for each guest to leave a photo ID at the front desk for the duration of their visit, regardless of the visitation plan. Residents must also escort their guests anywhere they go in the building, no matter what.

As a Resident Mentor I hear about this a lot. Parents have given me the

dirtiest looks at the desk for requiring them to leave a photo ID and to be escorted by t heir daughters. I’ve heard every complaint from “I’m just family, can’t you just remember that I went up?” to “I pay for her to live here [insert angry and entitled remark here].”

Entire hall meetings have dissolved into debates and questions about why boys can’t visit after 2 a.m. or general shouting about “fairness.” I think we could all benefit from a discussion about “fairness” in housing.

A rou nd 600 women live in t he Women’s Quad. Patterson can house up to 544 women. South Tower can hold 391 students. Capstone can house 579.

While I know all 24 of my residents, I could not begin to say I know all 550 women that live in the Women’s Quad in total. I don’t know their names, where they come from or what they believe. I don’t know what’s happened to them in the past or what makes them comfortable now. I wouldn’t even say in all confidence that I know all these things about some of my friends. We deal in large numbers.

This can come down to something as simple as a safety issue. We monitor how many people are going into your room at a time because of fi re codes.

We require swipe-in machines and card scans to get into elevators so we know whoever is in the hall has a good

reason to be there. We keep photo IDs of visitors at the front desk because we need to know who is in the building and who they are with,so we can hold all parties accountable if they violate the rules set in place to protect the rights of the people living in the hall.

Your residence hall is where you live, and you don’t want strange people wandering around going who knows what.

On a more complex side, take the large numbers and then consider our goal. The educat ional priorit y of housing is to provide an environment that motivates st udents to devote time and energ y to educationally purposeful activities by providing experiences that facilitate students’ academic progress, awareness of self and awareness of others.

Academic progress, awareness of self and awareness of others — these are the three things that RMs are trained to help their residents achieve. It’s not easy, but you would be surprised how the nature of living in a residence hall can instill some of these values effortlessly. Awareness of others is a common outcome, whether students like it or not. Right now, students are being forced to face the fact that just because they are comfortable with opposite sex visitation, does not mean that everyone is comfortable with it, and we all need respect that.

So, let’s go back to the hundreds of

students in each residence hall. Each one is different, and there is no way for the 20 or so RMs in the building to know each and every single one of them and what’s best for them. We do not know which residents are strongly religious, have been a victim of sexual assault or are just not comfortable having the opposite sex around while they are trying to sleep or study.

A representative from the counseling center said something to the R Ms during diversity training a few days ago that I think perfectly sums up why visitation is the way it is: “We do far less harm by approaching people as if they have undergone trauma than by assuming they haven’t.” This can go farther by expanding it to say we do far less harm by assuming everyone has a different opinion than us that is valid and well reasoned than by assuming that everyone either wants what we want or is stupid, prudish, weird, etc.

I hope residents can trust that what is being done by housing is being done in their best interest, and what fr ust rates t hem about liv ing in a residence hall doesn’t get in the way of what can be so great about living there. You get to meet a myriad of new people who you can share the Carolina experience with, and this opportunity to become more aware of others is unlike any other you will ever experience. You will always be glad you did if you’re open to it.

Golfers honor fallen U.S. soldiers David Roberts

Honoring fallen United States soldiers represents a small fraction of Universit y of Sout h Carolina students’ plans for winter break.

Junior Will Starke and sophomore Ben Diet r ich wou ld have to be included in that figure, however, as the two members of South Carolina’s men’s golf team participated in the Patriot All-America Invitational to close out the 2014 calendar year.

St a rke a nd Diet r ic h f i n i shed up the tournament shooting a 77 (+7) a nd a 78 (+8), respect ively, but participating in an event that recognizes fallen U.S. soldiers is something that Dietrich said “put things into perspective.”

Each golfer at t he Patriot A llAmerica was given a commemorative golf bag that had the name of a fallen ser vice member on it. The fallen service member on the player’s golf bag served as the person the player would represent for the entirety of the tournament.

Dietrich was chosen to represent Army Sgt. Arthur C. Williams IV while Starke played for A ir Force Staff Sgt. Patrick Lee Griffi n Jr. “It was a first-class event from the time we got there until the time we left,” Dietrich said. “We got a golf bag with their name on it. It’s pretty neat; every round, everybody in our group signed it and wrote what school they were from. It was just a neat experience because we were playing for something bigger

than ourselves.”

T he pressu res of compet it ive g ol f we r e m i n i m i z e d o v e r t he tournament for Dietrich who said he was able to relax when comparing his situation with the situations the fallen soldiers endured. “ W hen you play comp et it ive golf, you get so wrapped up in the moment, and you’re like, ‘Oh this shot is like life or death,’” Dietrich said. “I’m playing for somebody who died defending our nation to give me the freedom so that I could actually be here playing golf, and it honestly took the pressure off me.”

Both Dietrich and Starke fi nished t he f irst rou nd t ied for sevent h place, each shooting a 71 (+1) for the opening round. Dietrich rose one spot to sixth place the next day, securing another one-over-par for t he second rou nd. Diet r ich a nd Starke st umbled toward the end, each totaling their worst round of the tournament.

A small number of golfers were able to interact w it h t he fam ily members of the fallen soldiers, but neither Dietrich nor Starke got the chance to do so.

“Honestly, I wouldn’t know what to say. I’d just thank them deeply,” Dietrich said of the possibilit y of

Dietrich and Starke will return to Columbia for class Monday, but won’t compete with the Gamecocks until February when South Carolina travels to Humble, Texas to play i n t h e B a y o u C it y C o l l e g i a t e Championships.

A nd, though the tournament is now over, Dietrich will likely never forget the name of Army Sgt. Arthur C. Williams IV. “I thought, this is what I get to do because I enjoy doing it a nd am allowed to do it, and I have the freedom to do it because of these guys,” he said. “So, [playing golf] is really not that big of a deal because I’m out here playing golf and those guys are out there defending our country with their lives.”

South Carolina’s recruiting class is bleeding.

A 7- 6 season had recr u it s wor r ied, but a comment by head coach Steve Spurrier saying he planned to be around for “two or three more [years]” sent recruits into a state of panic.

Spurrier has since attempted to mop up the spill but South Carolina is still feeling the effects.

Eight members of the 2015 recruiting class have bolted, including most recently four-star recruit Arden Key. Several recruits have expressed an interest in fl ipping to a different school, including four-star defensive end Shameik Blackshear.

“February 4th will its Florida state or USC?” Blackshear said in a tweet. He later said he was kidding and that he remains committed to South Carolina.

Social media remains more or less a fi re that high school recruits tend to play around with every once in a while, And that’s something that Spurrier addressed Wednesday night during halftime of a men’s basketball game.

“I t hink ever y now and t hen some of our recruits mess around with the media we have learned,” Spurrier said. “Hopef ully that’s all they’re doing is messing around, saying one thing and meaning another, but we’ll see. You recruit until Feb. 4 and on Feb. 4, we’ll find out what we’ve got.”

Key has now decommited from the Gamecocks twice. He will visit South Carolina on Jan. 23 but also plans on visiting LSU and Miami before then. Key also has an official visit to Auburn

planned for Jan. 30.

Despite the bad news, the Gamecocks have picked up eight mid-year enrollees in Marquavius Lewis, Ernest Hawkins, Sherrod Pittman, Dexter Wideman, Jerad Washington, Christian Owens, Jalen Henry and Darin Smalls. Out of those eight, only two play on the offensive side of the ball.

“I think our defense is certainly going to look a lot different last year,” Spurrier said. “We are in good shape.”

After Jan. 14, programs can once again host official visits, which should prove to be beneficial for Spurrier and the Gamecocks as they try to get their 2015 class back on track.

Spurrier was once again elusive when addressing the possibility of making coaching changes before next season. But apparently the Head Ball Coach is not done adding to his staff.

“A lot of people are asking about our coaching staff,” Spurrier said. “I’ll say the same thing: If there’s a chance to add one or two guys down the road, we’ll do that.”

It seems like Spurrier wanted to get his guy Muschamp and, once that didn’t happen, he took his foot off the pedal.

A lot of questions remain unanswered, as there appears to be far more going on behind the scenes than Spurrier lets on. Lorenzo Ward remains the team’s defensive coordinator, though South Carolina was at one point reportedly in talks with former Florida head coach Will Muschamp to replace Ward.

It wa s a lso repor ted t hat LSU defensive coordinator Joh n Chav is pu rsued t he same position with the Gamecocks even though the position was not available.

When wide receiver Shaq Roland arrived on campus in 2012, the expectations were clear: maintain the standard of winning set by players who’ve come before.

A steep mountain to ask an 18-year-old kid to climb, but it was one that had been scaled by the previous three Mr. Footballs from South Carolina.

Stephon Gilmore (2009), Marcus Lattimore (2010) and Jadeveon Clowney (2011) each won the Palmetto State’s award in high school and chose to enroll at the University of South Carolina. Two of the aforementioned players ended up being selected in the first round of the NFL Draft, and all three were key pieces in the program’s most successful run in school history.

Now, it appears that midway through Roland’s ascent, he has given up hope of being the next great Gamecock.

For t he second t ime t h is season, when South Carolina’s team plane touched down in Shreveport, Louisiana, Roland was nowhere to be found. Head coach Steve Spurrier explained to the media before the Gamecocks’ appearance in the Duck Commander Independence Bowl that Roland was no longer with the team.

“I think he has elected to maybe drop out of school and go pro,” Spurrier said. “That was his choice, and we wish him the best.”

Now it seems as though Roland has elected to shop around for a Division II school where he could finish out his eligibility.

According to a report by Saturday Down South, a source close to Roland’s family said that the wide receiver plans on transferring schools and continuing his pursuit for a degree in African American Studies.

Though what we know to be certain is little, we know that Roland will not be in a South Carolina uniform next season.

Roland, a four-star recruit coming out of high school, played a tumultuous role on an otherwise steady Gamecock squad during his tenure. After landing a three-game suspension due to a violation of team rules, Roland was able to salvage an underwhelming 2013 campaign with a career-high 112 yards on six receptions in the Capital One Bowl.

Roland’s performance in the Capital One Bowl led many to speculate that he was poised for a breakout year in 2014— especially now with a quarterback who would sling the ball around perhaps more than Connor Shaw.

Fifth-year senior quarterback Dylan Thompson passed for a school record 3,564 yards in 2014, but only 356 came by way of Roland. A myriad of miscommunication between Roland and his coaches plagued his senior season, and it wasn’t SeeROLANDPAGE23

Former Gamecock wide receiver Shaq Roland failed to live up to the expectations placed upon him as a four-star high school recruit.

ROLANDPAGE19 long before Roland found himself watching the game from outside the stadium again.

After missing the team f light to Lexington, Kentucky, Roland was looking at his fourth missed game in less than a calendar year. He returned the next week, scoring a touchdown against Furman, then another the following week at Auburn. Then, Roland fell off the radar.

He accumulated 56 yards in what will prove to be his four final games as a Gamecock. Roland looked especially lost in South Carolina’s win at Florida and missed a block on what looked like a damaging hit on junior running back Brandon Wilds.

Nearly midway through the season, SESSIONSPAGE 24 Se s sion s, who had on ly m ade four three-pointers all season prior to Su nd ay, m ade t h ree ag a i n s t Kentucky.

“It’s always great to see your shots fall,” Sessions said.

Down the stretch, South Carolina’s depth proved crucial. Staley played 11 different players, while Kentucky coach Matthew Mitchell used just eight players.

“For us, I think depth is probably the reason why we’re so successful,” Staley said.

the writing on the wall became clear to Roland. He was out and sophomore wide receiver Pharoh Cooper was in.

A two-game stretch where Cooper caught 18 passes for 360 yards helped cement his place atop t he dept h chart and kept Roland in Spurrier’s doghouse.

With whatever passing attack South Carolina figures to assemble for the 2015 season centered on Cooper and his athleticism, it is possible that Roland felt that he would get more exposure at a Division II school.

Roland finishes his career at South Carolina with 891 receiving yards over three years. It’s going to take much more than that to get any NFL general manager to take a chance on Roland.

And he only has one year to do so.

A n a l ready tough second ha lf for Kent uck y got even worse as guard Janee Thompson suffered a gruesome injury with a little more than four minutes left in the game.

Thompson got tangled up while going after a loose ball and suf fered a d islocated lef t a n k le, according to a spokesperson from Kent uck y’s at hlet ic depart ment.

The spokesperson also said t hat Thompson was being brought to a hospital.

Two minutes following the injury, Mitchell was ejected from the game after arguing with a referee.

Defense carries Gamecocks past ‘Cats Brennan Doherty

South Carolina junior shooting guard Tiffany Mitchell led the Gamecocks with 19 points in Sunday’s 68-60 victory over Kentucky.

W it h a fa m i l ia r con ference opponent in town, the Gamecocks a nd t heir u ndefeated mark were tested by No. 10 Kentuck y (14-3, 3-1), but No. 1 South Carolina (16-0, 4-0) came out on top 68-60 in front of more than 17,000 spectators at Colonial Life Arena.

South Carolina has now won 26 straight games at its home arena, the longest active streak in the country.

The victory was South Carolina’s third in its last four contests against the Wildcats, but it wasn’t easy as the Gamecocks had to overcome a halftime deficit.

“To win a game like this against the top-10 team in the country, it’s all about a good profi le for March,” South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley said.

I n w h at w a s a v e r y p h y s i c a l and sloppy game, South Carolina overcame a poor offensive performance by winning with its tough defense, and its persistence on the offensive end down the stretch.

T he G a meco c k s st r uggled i n the f irst half as Kent uck y put an emphasis on defending the paint, and the Wildcats forced South Carolina into taking more outside shots than they would have wanted.

Sout h Carolina made just 33.8 percent of its shot attempts from the field, well below the team’s season average (50.1 percent).

As a result, the visiting Wildcats took a 38-35 lead into half t ime, marking just the third time this year that South Carolina had trailed after 20 minutes of play.

Although the second half wasn’t much better offensively for South Carolina, the Gamecocks made some

key halftime adjustments.

Staley decided to switch to a zone defense against a Kent uck y team that found little success outside of the paint, and that change proved crucial.

Kentucky made just 23.5 percent of its shots in the second half, and the Wildcats had a tough time getting to the rim.

W h i le Kent uck y took 10 f ree throws in the first half, they had just t wo t rips to t he line during the second half. Junior point guard Khadijah Sessions praised her coach for switching to the zone defense in the second half.

“Coach doe s a g reat job w it h playcalling,” Sessions said. “She saw that they were getting good shots, and what they wanted in man, so we moved back into a zone, and I think we played the best zone defense we had all season.”

While the Wildcats had to settle for more low-percentage shots later on in t he game, Sout h Carolina became more aggressive as the game went on.

The Gamecocks had a tough time getting good looks near the basket, but South Carolina stayed persistent, and eventually wore a tired Kentucky team down.

20 of South Carolina’s free throw attempts came in the second half, as the Gamecocks attacked Kentucky down low.

Shooting guard Tiffany Mitchell lead South Carolina with 19 points, 11 of wh ich came f rom t he f ree throw line.

Sessions also scored in doubledigits, adding 12 points.

A s t he Gamecocks found more success within the interior of the Kent uck y defense, some out side shots opened as well, and perhaps the turning point of the game happened when Sessions k nocked down her third three-pointer of the game to put the Gamecocks up by seven with ten minutes left in the game.

South Carolina struggles in Mississippi Kelli Caldwell

Looking for a victory to salvage an already shaky start to its conference schedule, South Carolina traveled to Oxford, Mississippi.

The Gamecocks instead found a humbling defeat as the Rebels took the win with the fi nal score of 65-49.

“We’ve had a bad week,” head coach Frank Martin said. “Don’t discredit Ole Miss; they’re at a very high level, but we’ve had a bad week.”

Alluding to the loss against Florida earlier in the week breaking their winning streak of seven straight games, Martin said South Carolina’s tumble against the Rebels set the Gamecocks back even further. “ We ob v iou sly d id n’t h a nd le success very well and now we are back to square one,” he said.

The Gamecocks (9-5, 0-2 SEC) struggled throughout the fi rst half against The Rebels (10-5, 1-1 SEC).

Ole Miss was ready to bring t he intensity needed to keep the victory in their house, and the Gamecocks never took t he lead at any point during the game.

The Gamecocks did manage to keep the score close in fi rst half with only a six points difference of 27-33 in favor of the Rebels going into halftime.

Although the Gamecocks showed the fire in the beginning, Martin de sc r ibed it a s “phony energ y ” that quickly escaped them by the beginning of the second half.

At the start of the second half, the Gamecocks tied the game at 33 but quickly lost their chances when Ole Miss scored 12 points in the next three minutes with simple mistakes.

The Gamecocks finished with 20 personal fouls and 15 t u rnovers compared to the Rebels 14 personal fouls and 10 turnovers.

Leading scorer for the Gamecocks was senior Ty rone Johnson wit h 13 points. Following Johnson with nine points each were sophomores Sindarius Thornwell and Duane Notice.

“ T h e g a m e’s r e a l and t he game’s strong,” Martin said. “If you’re not mentally prepared, you can’t sustain and t hat’s exactly what happened to us.”

Ole Miss had a way of paying attention to details, according to Mart in, say i ng t he G a mecock s wer e “not b e i n g g o o d players, and when you’re not a good player, you will pay, and that’s exactly what happened to us.”

Ole Miss brought a lot to the table coming off its heartbreaking loss against K ent uc k y, a nd M a r t i n was impressed wit h t he amount of skill Ole Miss brought on the court.

“They don’t whine and p out — t he y play,” he said. “They’re all long and athletic, and when they get in that half-court trap, you’ve got to be clean on your decision making and attack them, and we were never clean.”

South Carolina is now 0-2 in the SEC with more games quickly rounding the corner leaving no time for mistakes.

“We’ve got to search a nd f ig u re out who we want to be,” Martin said.

“We’ve got to be the guys who a re e xc ited ab out play ing a nd sacrif icing for one a not her t hat made us a halfway decent basketball team, or do we want to be the guys who are lifeless, unenthused, excuse-making, which is what we’ve been all week.”
