South Carolina heads into ECU matchup focusing on improving defense after allowing record 680 yards Danny Garrison @DANNYLGARRISON

Just 60 minutes into what was supposed to be a best-ever season for No. 21 South Carolina, the Gamecocks’ plans were derailed.

After a season-opening stomping at the hands of underdog Texas A&M,

South Carolina is now in the business of fi nding its way back on tracks. And that starts this weekend against East Carolina.

“We’re still, and we’ll always be, embarrassed by our performance in the

last game,” head coach Steve Spurrier said. “But we realize it’s history, and we realize the only thing we can do is try to learn from it.”

We learned several things from last Thursday’s defeat — most obvious was

South Carolina’s defense, which was significantly further behind than expected.

With a new 3-4 scheme, which defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward said isn’t going anywhere, and the majority of the starters still getting their feet wet in big time college football, the Gamecocks’ defense will face what many see as a chance to work out the kinks.

But that’s not how East Carolina sees it.

‘A GOOD TEAM’ The Pirates have scheduled themselves a gauntlet in the early goings of this season, in an effort to prove they can play with the big boys. In the teams’ first year in the American Athletic Conference, ECU will face three nonconference opponents from the five power leagues in succession, starting with the Gamecocks.

Spurrier said. “They play with confidence. They’ve got a schedule this year that they’re sort of dreaming about beating everybody.”

One season ago, East Carolina amassed 10 wins for the second time in school history, tacking on victories over ACC opponents North Carolina and North Carolina State. The Pirates became known for a high-powered offense led by senior gunslinger Shane Carden, who threw for 4,139 yards and 33 touchdowns in 2013.

Carden and company could be an issue for the Gamecocks’ inexperienced secondary, with a style similar to the Aggies on offense, but senior cornerback Brison Williams said a repeat performance is out of the question Saturday.

“I think they’ll do a lot of the same things because they’re both spread teams,” he said. “I think they’ll steal a lot of things out of

Texas A&M’s offense and try and do it against us. And I think we’ll be prepared for it.”

The Pirates outscored their opponents by an aggregate score of 522-322 last season. And that prolific offense that put up 200 more points than the other team last year opened this campaign with a 52-7 win over North Carolina Central.

STAYING AFLOAT At face value, it’s easy to say South Carolina’s matchup with ECU Saturday is insignificant.

You can justify that response by labeling East Carolina as a 17-point dog from outside of the fi ve power conferences, but if we learned anything from Texas A&M, it’s that no point spread is safe.

You could write off Saturday’s game as a nonconference tilt with no impact on the Gamecocks’ chances at the SEC East title, but

South Carolina’s aspirations don’t end at the conference title game. If the Gamecocks hope to keep their playoff chances alive, a loss to East Carolina would be insurmountable.

“We’ve got to play well to beat these guys,” Spurrier said. “I said that the last game, so don’t think we were overconfident. We were not overconfident. We got our butts beat.”

And after that beating, South Carolina justifiably lost its spot in the top-10 but managed to hang on to a top-25 ranking after the dropping from No. 9 to No. 21.

It’s safe to say another such loss will see South Carolina take a much bigger hit, but Spurrier said not to expect a repeat performance come Saturday night.

“We’re hoping and believing that we can perform a lot better than the last game,” he said, “and give our fans the team that they’ve been watching the last several years.”

Ghosts of the Kodiak

From no instruments to eight years of successful music: homespun indie band hasn’t lost sight of their roots or their friendship Erika Ryan @RIKA_RYAN

Sure, plenty of high school students dream of starting a band. Most give up once they realize playing an instrument is harder than it looks.

But that didn’t stop Ghosts of the Kodiak.

It’s been quite the journey since Ghosts of the Kodiak got together, learned to play instruments, wrote songs and started performing — in that order.

Eight years later, after their fair share of peaks and valleys, they’re still together.

Through several member variations, name changes and moves to different cities, Ghosts of the Kodiak has stayed the same humble group of friends from Sumter, South Carolina. The group recently relocated to Charlotte,

North Carolina, but vocalist Caleb Smith explained that without the artistic atmosphere in Cola, Ghosts of the Kodiak would have never come to be. “[Columbia] feels like our musical home,” Smith said. “We probably wouldn’t be playing music right now if it weren’t for the Columbia music scene and having access to that.”

While they can credit their favorite and most meaningful concert experiences to the New Brookland Tavern, drummer Nathan Parker knows Ghosts of the Kodiak isn’t the only band to do so. He explained that over the years, countless musicians have gotten the backing they’ve needed to grow from Columbia’s local scene.

“There’s still great support for good, solid musicians,” Parker said. “Rock, folk — there’s a place for that in Columbia.”

Ghosts of the Kodiak draws a lot of inspiration from bands like Manchester Orchestra and Radiohead, which comes across pretty clearly when you hear any of their EPs, especially their latest, “We Still Have Fear Inside Ourselves.”

Though they’ve followed in the musical footsteps of other bands over the years, Ghosts of the Kodiak’s music has a more raw, intense feel. But as their sound continues to develop, it’s become more difficult to pin down a genre that accurately represents them.

When asked how to describe their music, Ghosts of the Kodiak used the words “glass,” “mountains” and “existential.”

“I guess we’re indie rock — whatever that means,” Smith said.

Along with their changing sound, the members’ lives have changed, as well. Whether it was when their vocalist lived in the U.K. or their bass player’s move to Greenwood, Ghosts of the Kodiak have rolled with the punches and used the distance factor to their advantage.

Instead of merely taking a vacation to see Smith overseas this summer, the group booked several shows in London during their visit.

Ghosts of the Kodiak is dedicated, to say the least — their fi rst album took more than three years to record and release. After such a long process filled with plenty of growing pains, the album felt old to the members by the time it was in its final form.

But as the saying goes, you learn by doing.

“Through that period, we became the band that was capable of making the next record,” Smith said.

Now that Smith is back in the states and the band is back together, Ghosts of the Kodiak wants to spend the next stage of their career getting back to their roots. As they look toward putting out new material, the group’s main focus is writing.

“Only time will tell, as far as [a new album] goes,” Parker said.

Ghosts of the Kodiak will always have a special spot in their heart for by the New Brookland Tavern, which makes their show this weekend all the more meaningful. On Friday, they will perform alongside fellow Midlands-based bands Corbett Alexander, All New Badges and Miles To Go. They may have grown up a bit over these past eight years, but Ghosts of the Kodiak still has the same passion for music it takes for a group of friends to start a band with no instruments.

I don’t need to spit scary statistics at you to shame you into changing your behavior — you already know all the facts. I think the important thing to emphasize here is that you’re fighting an addiction, and that takes time. The defeat you allow yourself to feel after a slip is just as carcinogenic as the nicotine. It will grow and creep around your bones until you can’t think of a reason to try to escape it. Things don’t instantly become easy just because you acknowledge the logic of the situation. Forgive yourself, love yourself and don’t ever give up on yourself.

Offense searches for rhythm vs. ECU Wilds expeced to start at running back in place of ailing Davis Dalton Abel @DALTON_ABEL22

Last Thursday, one team put up 52 points and 680 total yards of offense in their season opener at Williams-Brice.

It wasn’t South Carolina.

Texas A&M claimed those numbers, while the Gamecocks put up 28 points and 433 yards of total offense in last Thursday’s matchup.

Despite an unusual game for South Carolina, in which the Gamecocks trailed every time they touched the ball, many concerns arose regarding the productivity of an offensive unit that returns experienced performers at every skill position.

A big question for the Gamecocks is junior running back Mike Davis, who led the SEC East last season with 1,183 rushing yards and was expected to carry the load in a crowded backfield heading into 2014.

After a rib injury limited Davis to 15 yards on six carries in the opener, the tailback’s condition moving forward is cloudy to say the least. Head coach Steve Spurrier labeled Davis as “probable”

on Tuesday, a day after labeling the junior as “sort of doubtful.”

Should Davis be limited, the door will open for redshirt junior Brandon Wilds to make his sixth career start. Wilds, who led the team with 45 yards on nine carries Thursday, said he isn’t concerned with the rampant speculation ahead of Saturday’s tilt with East Carolina.

“You’ve just got to tell yourself that you’re ready anytime your name could be called,” Wilds said.

“It’s hard being patient, but I just have to be ready when the time comes.”

out of the backfield. The redshirt freshman had been impressive in practice with his combination of size and speed, but he didn’t record a carry in the season opener.

The Gamecocks averaged just three yards on their 22 carries against the Aggies, leading many to believe that the lack in pass and run balance was at the root of their offensive woes.

But senior quarterback Dylan Thompson insisted it’s his job to right the ship.

“Any time anybody asks about offense ... the first person they’re asking about is the quarterback,” he said. “My role on this team is to be somebody everybody can look to no

matter what the situation is.”

If South Carolina is to avoid an 0-2 start, the Gamecocks will need to put up points. While many faces have changed on the East Carolina defense, Thompson will look to recapture the magic of his first career start against the Pirates in 2012 when he threw for 330 yards and three touchdowns.

Still, Thompson is by no means overlooking his opponent out of the American Athletic Conference after completing 50 percent of his passes a week ago.

“They’re active,” Thompson said.

“They got some guys that can run, and we’ve got to be sharp with our route running and my reads.”

Spurrier noted that the Gamecocks’ protection must improve significantly following Thursday’s performance in order for the offense to succeed Saturday. As a result, cooffensive coordinator Shawn Elliot announced that redshirt junior Will Sport will get the nod at right guard this week, while redshirt freshman Alan Knott is likely to start at center.

Another player to look out for this weekend is receiver Shaq Roland.

After lofty expectations set the junior up to follow in the footsteps of Sidney Rice, Alshon Jeffery and Bruce Ellington, the junior was virtually invisible against Texas A&M, recording just one catch for two yards.

Redshirt senior Nick Jones, on the other hand, emerged as Thompson’s go-to deep threat with a 113yard, two-touchdown performance.

Although Jones refused to be satisfied with his effort Thursday, his faith in South Carolina was through the roof.

“I’m so confident in this team. I always believe we can bounce back after a loss,” Jones said. “Coach Spurrier does everything in his power after a loss to make changes and get it right for the next week.”

Defense looks to provide pressure

The last time the Gamecocks saw East Carolina’s senior quarterback Shane Carden, it was 2012 and thenstarting quarterback Rio Johnson had just been yanked in favor of the sophomore.

The Shane Carden era began during the second half of the Pirates’

48-10 loss to South Carolina, as Johnson never saw another snap for the team, ultimately transferring.

And 25 starts later, Carden’s journey has come full circle, leading him back to Williams-Brice Stadium for the first time in two years.

But for the Gamecocks’ defense, he couldn’t come at a worse time.

Just one week after surrendering 680 total yards to Texas A&M in a deflating season-opening loss, No. 21 South Carolina welcomes in a

Pirates squad that favors the Aggies in a variety of ways.

“ECU is a good team. They go pretty fast. We’re preparing for their speed just like we prepared for Texas A&M,” redshirt senior defensive tackle J.T. Surratt said. “They try to get the ball out quick as well, but, like I said, we’re working on our pass rush game, we’re working on getting to the quarterback this week.”

The Pirates utilize the same high-tempo offense that gave the

Gamecocks fits last week against the Aggies. East Carolina was able to reel off 74 plays against North Carolina Central, compared to the 99 plays ran by Texas A&M last week.

“They play a little bit like Texas A&M on offense,” head coach Steve Spurrier said. “Quarterback gets the ball out of his hands quickly, excellent receivers, pretty good running game.”

nation in passing yards, eclipsing Johnny Manziel’s 4,114 total by 25 yards. The Pirates’ signal caller also completed 70.5 percent of his passes in 2013-2014, second only to Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater’s mark of 71 percent.

Of Carson’s 4,139 passing yards last season, 1,284 were directed at senior wide receiver Justin Hardy.

He has 3,134 career receiving yards in his four years at East Carolina, and pulled in eight receptions for 87 yards and two scores last week against North Carolina Central.

Hardy also completed one pass for 41 yards and a touchdown in the team’s 52-7 rout of the Eagles.

The senior wide receiver caught eight passes for 111 yards and a touchdown in 2012 against a South Carolina secondary that featured terrors like D.J. Swearinger and

Victor Hampton.

For a defense that allowed Aggies’ senior receiver Malcome Kennedy to catch 14 passes for 137 yards, Hardy against South Carolina’s secondary could be a nightmare of a matchup.

“This week is really going to show what kind of people we’ve got on the team,” Surratt said. “[It’ll] show how strong-minded we are. We’ve got to get back out there and get back on the bike. We fell off, but we’ve got to get up and keep going.”

For Surratt and the rest of the defensive line, disrupting the rhythm of Carden will be essential for keeping the Pirates off the board.

East Carolina gave up only one sack in their opener, the same number the Gamecocks were able to muster against the Aggies.

The only team in the nation that allowed more third down conversions in its opener was Bowling Green against Western Kentucky.

Despite his defense’s historically

“We think we’ve got the players to fix it,” Spurrier said. “So we’re going to find out here Saturday night.”

Around the Nation: Games to watch in week 2 Top-25 matchups, final installment of rivalry highlight this weekend’s college football slate JP West @JPWEST4

No. 7 Michigan State at No. 3 Oregon The featured game in college football this week brings together two heavyweights in No. 7 Michigan State and the No. 3 Oregon Ducks in a game that’s sure to give the winner an early leg up on a spot for the college football playoff. The Spartans are quite familiar with tough Pac-12 opponents, especially after defeating Stanford in last year’s Rose Bowl 24-20, so this Oregon team is nothing new to them. Duck quarterback Marcus Mariota, returned for his junior year this season, despite significant NFL interest and first-round draft potential, and this is just the game he and his team set their sights on all offseason.

Despite Michigan State’s defensive prowess, Sparty might not have the athletes or the stamina to keep up with the Oregon’s no-huddle attack, which has gashed and baffled even the most brilliant of defensive minds.

Michigan State will keep it close with their efficient passing game led

by Connor Cook, but in the end, the Autzen crowd and the speed of the Ducks may be too much to overcome.

After dominating performances over their weekone opponents, the USC Trojans and Stanford Cardinal both appear ready for an epic clash, sure to have serious Pac-12 championship implications. In the Trojans’ obliteration of Fresno State, quarterback Cody Kessler threw for 394 yards and 4 TDs while the USC offense as a whole ended the game with a eye-popping 701 yards of total offense. Against UC Davis, it was the Stanford’s defense that put on a show, only allowing 115 yards of total offense and not allowing the Aggies to get past the 50 yard line. In the end, this game is a real tossup between one highly-potent offense and another lunch pail defense and it should be fun to watch. If nothing else, home-field advantage for the Cardinal might be the difference in the game.

Michigan at No. 16 Notre Dame From Tate Forcier’s game-winning TD pass with 11 seconds remaining in 2009 to Denard Robinson’s 502-yard performance capped by his two-yard TD run to secure the game in 2010, this rivalry is intense. Even Harry Oliver’s 51-yard boot that won the game for the Irish in 1980and set off pandemonium inside ND stadium proves that these two teams have produced some incredible games and memories. Much to the chagrin of college football purists, Saturday’s meeting will be the last time the Maize and Blue and the Golden Domers will play for the foreseeable future. For Michigan and offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier, the running game will be key if the Wolverines want to establish their tempo and get the Irish on their heels. That might be easier said than done, however, with Michigan’s offensive line in the midst of a rebuilding phase — especially at center — where Brady Hoke has waffled back and forth between starters since the Spring. This could make for a big day in the life of ND nose tackle Jarron Jones. Look for another onescore game between these two bitter rivals and some late-game heroics from one player to send this series out with a bang.

Virginia Tech at No. 8 Ohio State When Frank Beamer and Urban Meyer lead their teams onto the field in Saturday’s game at Ohio Stadium, they’ll bring their 354 combined wins and 42 years of coaching experience at major collegiate schools, easily the most between two collegiate football coaches this season. The Hokies have a knack for falling short on the big stage against top-10 teams, so the fate of this game will rest on

the shoulders of quarterback Michael Brewer. A transfer from Texas Tech, Brewer impressed in his first career start against William & Mary, throwing for 251 yards and two TDs while completing over 75 percent of his passes. For both Ohio State and quarterback J.T. Barrett — who had an admirable start to his career, passing for 226 yards and 2 TDs while only throwing one interception — this game will be a good barometer for where they stand in the national picture. Barrett also led the team in rushing. While neither team possesses much offensive firepower, Ohio State’s consistent attack and playmakers might just be the difference in the game. But if Beamerball comes to play, the Buckeyes may in trouble early.

Pittsburgh at Boston College In a matchup of two former Big East foes, the Pittsburgh Panthers will take on the Eagles of Boston College as they meet for the first time in 10 years. In both teams’ week one cakewalks against the University of Delaware and UMASS, respectively, each found notable success on the ground, racking up a combined 747 yards. But the same could not be said for each team’s aerial attack, as each squad ranks lower than 92nd in passing offense after week one.

Expect this one to be decided by whatever team can make a play on defense or make a crucial stop. Four points or fewer have decided four of the last eight meetings between these two. No offensive fireworks in this contest — just a grind-it-out, hard-nosed football game.

No. 20 Kansas State at Iowa State The Iowa State Cyclones will host the Kansas State Wildcats in a matchup that looks like a severe mismatch on paper. After an embarrassing 3414 performance on their home field against FCS opponent North Dakota State, the Cyclones will try to pick themselves up and take down the No. 20 team from Manhattan, Kansas. And to add a little salt to the flesh wound that Iowa State sustained in week one, they also lost their 2nd leading receiver from last year, Quenton Bundrage, to an ACL injury for the season. The Wildcats, on the other hand, looked like a well-oiled machine in their week one drubbing of inferior Stephen F. Austin, especially at quarterback, as second-year starter Jake Waters accounted for almost 300 yards of offense and four scores on the day. The only possibility of a letdown here would be if the Wildcats take the day off with Auburn looming on the horizon in week three, but don’t expect Bill Snyder — now in his 23rd year as head coach — to let that happen.
