Football comes second after senior Hayden hospitalized In Texas, football reigns king.

At times, a weekend at Robertson Stadium and beating the Cougars’ given opponent can seem like the most Andrew important Pate thing in the world. However, in many ways this week, football took a back seat.

On Tuesday, senior defensive back D.J. Hayden was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital by ambulance after tearing his inferior vena cava, the large vein that carries blood from the lower half of the body back to the heart.

The injury is 95 percent fatal and has never been reported in association with a football injury, according to UH Head Team Physician Walter Lowe.

Those who know Hayden would agree that his talent on the field is attributed to his love for the game and leadership abilities.

“He’s a vocal leader and a leader by his actions,” said defensive backs assistant coach Zac Spavital. “He’s made some big plays for us lately and we’re trying to manage that and keep everyone going.”

Immediately after Tuesday’s practice, Hayden’s teammates flocked to Twitter using the trending topic “#PrayForDJ” as a way to encourage thoughts and prayers.

As a man of faith, I firmly believe the influx of prayers have helped Hayden’s recovery and more importantly — his survival.

As a result, the senior from Elkins is currently alert and in stable yet critical condition in Memorial Hermann’s ICU Unit.

With a tough test against Tulsa (7-2; 5-0) on deck, the Cougars now have one more motivating factor in the game that will be the second most important thing in the world to fans on Saturday.

THEOPPOSITION Offensive line to be tested against Tulsa Manzur Vazquez Staff writer

On Saturday, the Cougars have a chance to show the home crowd how good of an offense they can be, but they will have to do it without redshirt sophomore running back Charles Sims.

Tulsa is coming to Robertson Stadium with a defense that leads the nation in sacks. The offensive line will be tested in protecting redshirt sophomore quarterback David Piland.

When asked about the Tulsa pass rush this week, Piland was confident in his offensive line.

“I’ve got full faith in our guys up front. They have been preparing all week and it’s going to show,” Piland said.

He also explained how Tulsa’s defense will provide openings for the Cougars to exploit if it brings more than four defenders.

“They’re going to try and put pressure on us, but there has to be voids in their defense if they bring extra help to create pressure. It’ll be up to us to find those voids and

capitalize,” Piland said.

Sims suffered an ankle injury late in the second quarter against East Carolina. He’s being evaluated but it is doubtful he’ll play.

Sims is the Cougars’ leading rusher and ranks third in the Conference USA with 849 yards and 11 touchdowns despite not playing against UCLA and missing time against UTEP and ECU. Piland was ready for the next guy to step up.

“We have guys that can play.

Prime example is (Kenneth) Farrow’s run at the end of the last game. It’s a difference but we can still run the ball and be efficient as an offense,” Piland said.

Freshman running back Kenneth Farrow is second in rushing, behind Sims, and has compiled 253 yards on 48 carries and two touchdowns while competing in all nine games this season.

“He is a guy that is getting better every week,” Levine said.

“He is a powerful guy who loves to play the game. I have a lot of confidence in him for this weekend.

Offense boasts conference’s top rushing attack Manzur Vazquez Staff writer

On Saturday, the Cougars will face off against Tulsa’s powerful offensive unit; a daunting task for head coach Tony Levine and staff.

“They’re fast, they’re illusive and they’re powerful,” Levine said.

Tulsa is No. 1 in rushing offense in Conference USA with 232.9 yards per game.

“It reminds me a little bit of us last year in their running back position; they kind of have the threeheaded monster,” Levine said.

Aside from having the No. 1 rushing offense, Tulsa also has the No. 2 scoring offense in C-USA with 36.8 points per game.

Tulsa is coming to Robertson Stadium with one of their premium senior running backs, Alex Singleton.

He leads C-USA in scoring with 16 touchdowns. Stopping Singleton has to be one of the defense’s top priorities.

Aside from figuring out a game plan for this weekend, the defense took a hard blow this week when senior corner D.J. Hayden was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital by ambulance during Tuesday’s practice after colliding with a player.

“Right now, I’d just like to have everyone keep D.J. in their thoughts and prayers,” Levine said to SportsTalk 790 AM. “It was a freak accident — we were working defense against our scout offense and he and another player broke on a ball then collided.”

Through nine games played, Hayden is first on the team with four interceptions and third in solo tackles with 38. With Hayden out, other players in the secondary are going to have to show up and play good football.

“Other guys are going to have to step up. We’re not going to play any different. We’re going to do what we do,” said defensive backs assistant coach Zac Spavital.

Junior defensive back Thomas Bates will start on the outside, but other players will rotate, Spavital said.

Sophomore linebacker Derrick Mathews believes defeating Tulsa starts with forcing it to throw the ball.

“Our goal is the same every week which is to stop the run,” Mathews said. “We’re going to try and make them one-dimensional and try to get them to throw the ball more.

We’re preparing each day to play our hardest.”

The Cougars will have to replace two upperclassmen leaders — one on each side of the ball — when they step on the field on Saturday.

Redshirt junior running back Charles Sims, the team’s leading rusher, will miss Saturday’s contest because of an ankle injury he suffered in the second quarter against East Carolina. Sims, who has 829 yards rushing this season, leads by example and has helped redshirt freshman running back Kenneth Farrow as an inexperienced player, he said. “Since I first got here, I’ve learned a lot of things just from watching (Sims) and some of the things he does,� Farrow said. “Whether it’s certain plays or his

work ethic, it’s definitely been fun being back there with somebody that good when I’m so young.

Farrow will start in Sims’ absence but freshman running backs Ryan Jackson and Braxton Wellford will also see time in the backfield, said head coach Tony Levine. “I have a lot of confidence in him for this weekend. There isn’t a set number of carries we have in mind for this weekend. We are going to see who has the hot hand, whether it be Kenneth Farrow, Ryan Jackson or Braxton Welford,�

Levine said.

On the defensive end, UH will be without senior corner D.J. Hayden, who would cover the opposing team’s best receiver manto-man and provide leadership.

After a collision in practice Hayden is in stable yet critical condition.

Other players like senior linebacker Phillip Steward will have to take more responsibility as a leader, a position in which Levine said he is already doing a good job. “(Steward) provides great leadership to our younger guys.

Regardless of position, he makes an impact on their game,� Levine said. “Guys like Trevon Stewart or Adrian McDonald really look up to Phillip. He is doing a great job for us defensively and he has the stats to back it up.�

UH took control of a back and forth battle late when Bo Burris tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Mike Spratt, giving UH a 24-21 lead.
