T HE TRUT H A B O UT Q U I TTI N G YO U R J O B By: Dawniel Winningham Is it possible to quit your job? The answer to that question is YES! There are many reasons that you may SAY you can’t quit your job and even more reasons that OTHER people will TELL you that you can’t quit your job. BUT, the TRUTH is that NOT ONLY can you QUIT your JOB—You can QUIT your job and make EVEN MORE doing what you LOVE! BUT there are some things that MUST be done to make that happen; including BELIEVING in your ability to do so. What we were taught We were TAUGHT to get a job and work hard so that one day we would be able to comfortably retired and live the rest of our lives on the porch in rocking chairs. We were taught that because that was the day and age that our parents and grandparents lived in. However, that is NOT the world we live in today. Back then, jobs were loyal, so people were only right in being loyal to those jobs. But nowadays, jobs are focused on ONE THING and ONE THING ONLY—the bottom line. Therefore, we can only do what is best for our family and focus on OUR bottom line. We can’t continue to sit around and be paid whatever the JOB thinks is fair, or face being let go from work because the JOB didn’t make their profit forecast for the quarter. We must stop playing Russian Roulette with our families because of a job. What is true While the bad news is that jobs are no longer loyal, the good news is that NOW more than ever, everyday people are able to take their ideas and inventions and present them to the world and build businesses that will support and sustain their families forever. Actually, that has ALWAYS been the case: if you look at major businesses now, they were all started by a person with an idea. McDonalds was started by ONE man who had an idea to cook hamburgers fast! KFC, Goodyear, Chase and many other institutions were started with ONE person with an idea who refused to give up. What it takes Now while I’ve given you MANY examples of million dollar businesses that were started by a person with an idea, it takes FAR more than an idea to get your business up and running in a way that you can feed your family and finally leave your job. Desire – Desire is mandatory for you to quit your Job. You have to WANT it in a way that you have NEVER wanted anything before. You have to believe in a way that you have NEVER believed before. There are so many people that HATE their job, but because they do not believe in their ability to do BETTER, they stay—and even worse, they continue to struggle from paycheck to paycheck because of their decision. At least if
I am going to struggle from paycheck to paycheck, it had better be for something that will create generational wealth and happiness, not just money for someone else. Drive – WILL you go get it? I am often amazed at the number of people who SEE opportunity for themselves and refuse to go get it. But you go get it for your family, your friends, and your job. WILL you go get it for you? The same way in which you accomplish deadlines for your job – day in and day out without excuses--is the same DRIVE that it will take for you to build your business. No sick days, no days where you can’t pull it together. You have to do a little every day until you see the dream starting to move, and then you will do EVEN more! Focus – I don’t just mean focus on working. I mean focusing on a deliberate plan or idea and NOT being “all over the place” or distracted by the first wind that blows. Many will come to you saying they have ANOTHER idea or something else that could possibly make YOU more money, but you have to ask yourself, is that YOUR idea or is that THEIR idea? Is that YOUR opportunity or is that THEIR opportunity? The answer to that should keep you on course. Help – For those of us who are reluctant to ask for help, let me tell you RIGHT NOW that if you are reluctant to ask for help, it is doubtful that you will make it. Help comes in the form of wise council, a team of supportive people helping you build and a community of likeminded people who will push you when you feel that you can’t go any further. Every time that you feel as if you are operating 100% within your own control ask yourself, CAN I do this alone? If the answer were YES, then you would have done it already. INVEST in help for your next level. You won’t regret it! Belief – Code word: faith. Not only faith in the creator, but also faith in yourself and what you were created to do. KNOWING that you not only have a purpose but that you have been sent here to accomplish that purpose and that you have supernatural help to support you if you would only ask and believe. Action – All of these things are great but you must have action. You must leave perfection on the shelf and launch. You must leave procrastination behind and act. Your indecision and lack of moving forward will cause you to stay at your job forever. It is better to act and fail so that you KNOW what you need to do moving forward than to NOT act and be stuck at a job forever. You may have fooled yourself into thinking that leaving your job is not right for you, or that you need to wait until a later date and time when the kids are older, or when you have more money saved, or whatever the REASON is that you have told yourself. But the TRUTH is that NOW is the time that you start planning your exit because it will take you a year or better to be in a place where you are READY to leave your job. If at that time you CHOOSE to stay, then that is different. But at least now you are NOT oblivious as to what your choices are in order for you to provide for your family forever. Trust me, I have been there myself thinking that I was perfectly happy living my job, when in fact there was MUCH more work for me to do in the world. I just had to embrace it and go for it! WOME N L IE S A N D MO NE Y By: Dawniel Winningham Before I even start this article, I want to admit that there are LIES that I still tell myself about money. Things that I still ignore or avoid because they are too painful. But I am working on it, and this article is about you telling YOURSELF the truth so that you can work on it too. The TRUTH about women and money is that we have to get it together: • We grow 75% of the world’s food. • We do ¾ of the world’s work. • Yet, we have only 10% of the world’s wealth and 1% of the world’s land. LADIES, we have a problem! You see, as women we have been taught some things about money that are fundamentally wrong. When we do the math in our bank accounts, we SEE the results of our labor keep us struggling paycheck to paycheck. Without a conscious focus on changing what we have been taught, women will continue to lead the world in being in poverty. According to the numbers POVERTY is the ONLY thing we lead the world in. Oh, and caring for ANYONE and everyone. We care for the young—our children. We care for the old—our parents. So it doesn’t make sense that the gender that cares for virtually everyone is broke. It’s time for us to fix it. They say the TRUTH will set you FREE, but FIRST you must acknowledge the lies. The Lies Women can’t work together—Not only CAN we work together, but we must. The world discriminates against women—true, we live “in a man’s world,” but there are enough women for us to take back our portion if we would stop working against each other and start working together. You can ignore your money and things will be fine—as women we have to STOP ignoring our financial situations, EVEN when (and especially when) they are dire. We MUST go out and demand what we are worth and stop thinking that the world will pay us if WE don’t ask for it. If I just work hard—let’s face it, some of us can’t work any harder. It’s time for us to work smarter and KNOW our worth so that we don’t continue to struggle in life and business. There is SO much that we need to accomplish to change the world, but to change the world, we must FIRST change ourselves. We will have to FACE our fears and misconceptions about money, CHALLENGE what we were taught, and PUSH for our worth without feeling as if we will hurt someone’s feelings in the process. We must take the emotions out of money and in doing so, KNOW that business is business and we have earned every right to earn just as much, if not more, than our male counterparts. Men are just willing to ask for what is due them and we are not. That changes NOW! JACQUE L IN E S M IT H Fund and Grow Your Business Using O.P.M. (Other People’s Money) How I Got Here… The Layoffs… Yes, layoffs, plural... Three layoffs in a human resources career that spanned over 25years. The first time I was laid off was 1997. I was working for a software manufacturer in California. Several warning signs were around me but at the time I did not put them together to recognize that a layoff was imminent. The next layoff came while serving as a Director for a fast-food corporate office also in California. The company made the decision to move the administrative offices several hours away to the central part of the state and since I had two young children at the time, that move was not feasible for me, so, another layoff. The last layoff was a completely different story. I moved my family from Virginia to Massachusetts to take a position as Director of Human Resources for a non-profit agency. I had all but given up on my dreams of being a business owner as the realities of life set in with two children that were about to head off to college. While taking my daughter to start her freshman year of college, that entrepreneurial yearning started bubbling up again. I knew and decided I was not going to spend the rest of my career at that agency. The Rebound… Then, I was introduced to Dawniel Winningham. My original plan was to join Wealthy Sisters Network (now Wealthy Sisters Network International) as a way of networking with other women starting and running businesses locally. It became abundantly clear within a short period that I needed to glean more knowledge from Dawniel before taking on such an awesome responsibility. As I sat and continued to listen to her speak and teach, the entrepreneurial fires started raging yet again. I got my business license, started my business, created my transition plan, and then the bottom fell out. May 18, 2016 was the last time I will ever be laid off from a job again. Just prior to and since leaving the company, I have had the honor of taking instruction and working directly with Dawniel Winningham. I have had the opportunity to be on the platform of two of her events, Las Vegas and Ft. Lauderdale as well as the planning committees of several other initiatives. Collaboration is one of the central themes that surrounds this community which has been forged under Dawniel’s amazing leadership. Through her teaching and mentorship, I have consulted with international clients which in my mind would not be possible until sometime in the distant future. There are several myths associated with sponsorships for small business owners. 1) Sponsorship is only for non-profits; 2) My business must relate to sports to be sponsored; 3) My business is too small to be sponsored; 4) I don’t have enough business experience to be sponsored, are but a few of the prevailing myths related to generating sponsorships. I have made it my business to dispel the myth that sponsorships are confined to only large conglomerates and non-profits. Small business owners are being sponsored every day in many ways for many different business activities. Getting sponsors for your business is not as difficult and daunting as it may sound. There is a process, and once you learn how to go about it the right way you will wonder why you did not previously add sponsorship to your marketing strategy. That is where we come in. JU L IA ROYS TO N Self-Talk: What Do You Tell Yourself? When you wake up in the morning and look in the mirror, what do you tell yourself? What do you tell yourself when you make a mistake? Do you make it worse with what you say than what you’ve actually done? Probably. Self-Talk can help move you further toward your goals or move your further away from your goals. Why? Life is hard and people have their own problems. They may love you and care about you, but people can’t always attend to your every emotional and mental need. What have I learned? Love Myself - Sure, I should take care of myself, eat better, exercise more and maybe lose weight, but what good is a perfect body with a tormented soul? I first have to fall in love with me. This is not an arrogant, self-centred, self-absorbed, “can’t stand to be around her” type of love. This is a love of myself so that I can be the best self that I was destined to be. Look with New Eyes – When I look in the mirror, I wink, blow kisses and tell myself that I am smart, cute and talented. Sure, I see the defects but call them possibilities. My husband tells me that I’m beautiful, intelligent and that he loves me every day. I am grateful but if he never said it, I have to look myself in the mirror and see someone that is smart enough, good enough, worthy
enough to be a success in every area of my life. It’s how you see yourself and what you tell yourself that matters. Learn New Words – “I’m stupid and probably will never succeed,” isn’t a phrase that you should tell yourself ever. Learn some new words and phrases: “I can do it,” “That didn’t work out like I planned but it’ll be better next time,” “I’m prepared, smart and able to get this done,” If something unforeseen happens, it can be fixed.” Repeat these phrases out loud to yourself until you believe it. Live Out My Purpose – I found my purpose as I walked out my journey. It wasn’t a perfect path because I am not a perfect person. I have made mistakes, bad decisions and trusted some wrong people, but I acknowledged the mistakes, held myself accountable, got back up, got on the right road and got moving even faster than before. I discover more about myself each day, month and year that I live. Each time I say yes to something new, discard the unnecessary, remove all distractions, and love without hesitation, I am greeted with a new gift, talent, ability and opportunity to live. Therefore, because of my past successes, I can tell the honest truth to myself that I can do it because I’ve done it in the past. I can achieve because I have a history of achievement. Love remembers the client who was totally at ease talking about her business but became very nervous when the day arrived for the photo shoot. “She remembered that she didn’t like to get photos taken,” Love said. The client fretted over her body type, her facial features, and her overall appearance. Since that kind of tension shows up on film, Love chatted with her during the shoot to help her let go of the feelings. As the woman focused on their conversation, she relaxed and became animated. “At the end, she saw her photos and said, ‘Is
that me?’ I helped her see the beauty that was in her,” Love said. “I told her story.” Love, who has 17 years of photography experience, has filmed four documentaries, but you don’t need video to tell someone’s story, she says. “Capturing moments with photos tells the story of what is happening. A photo speaks a thousand words, but it also tells a million stories. We can lose life at any moment. We need to seize it, capture it, and commemorate it with a photo.” Love has an artist’s eye for the image that encapsulates a moment. She saw storm clouds forming while on the road and pulled over to capture them, asking her son to stand in the foreground of the shot (Love has four children). The sky was so gray, “it looked like a drawing,” she said.
Her son looked as though he had been superimposed on the sky. TA NDEE SA L T E R When I made the decision to follow my passion of inspiring women, I encountered four different types of people. Each one had their own thoughts about what was best for me. Every time I experienced a conversation with them, I scratched my head and wondered if what they had to say was really for me. The first person’s words to me were, “Who is really going to listen to you and take advice from someone like you?” They only saw the old me and paid no attention to the progress I made; they did not see how much I had grown in all the years they had known me. To them, I was just that girl from back then. I wondered if my past mistakes and situations disqualified me. The second person said to me something like this: “Is that really realistic? Why not just stay where you are and apply for a new position? You have a good job.” They followed that up with “I just don’t understand why you would want to do that.” In their head, it would be more realistic for me to stay at the job and try to grow within the company—it was safer that way. I asked myself if they were right, would it be too much of a risk to start my own business. The third person pretty much dismissed my vision, saying, “That’s a good idea but I think you would be better off becoming a schoolteacher. You know, get them while they are young.” They wanted me to fit into a box. They wanted me to accept their idea was the best direction for me. I looked into the idea, but something just didn’t click for me. After all of that, I took some time to look at the people around me. I quickly realized I had to make some adjustments to my circle. I had to connect with others who believed in me and my vision, and that’s when I found the fourth type of person: The person who was willing to cheer me on and push me towards my vision. They said, “Go for it! You can do it.” On your journey, you are almost guaranteed to encounter each of these people and you will see them more than once, especially when it is time for you to go to a new level. TR ACEY G E ORG E There you are on top of the mountain one minute, then in the valley the next. You’ve dreamed. You’ve had goals. You’ve had plans. . .concrete ones; yet nothing to show for it. Or perhaps, you’ve started on the path of pursuing your purpose and somehow became stuck. What stranded you? What caused you to feel like, “blah?” The numerous promises that fell through the cracks and the times you felt cheated by family, friends, or business associates left a sour taste in your mouth. Life has handed you a bowl of lemons and no matter what you do, it still seems to be just a bowl of lemons. You are the brave one; yet the fiery passion that moved you beyond the everyday humdrum is now dim. Balance Your Life By Not Doing It All Do you ever wonder if there is such a thing as having life balance? Are you someone who struggles with creating balance with all of the responsibilities you have? As business women, there are times when it feels like you put forth a lot of effort to balance several tasks on a very small plate. As you follow your daily routine of creating balance, you may notice that some of those tasks are on the edge of the plate. One sudden move and they will start falling. Your body tells interesting stories when it starts to speak--the problem comes when we fail to listen. While trying to create balance you want to avoid feeling overwhelmed or stressed, which may cause you to have a meltdown. A meltdown can be brought on by the simplest thing: one minute you are sitting in the car or lying in the bed with a happy heart, and the next minute you are crying uncontrollably with a feeling of despair. When the tears start flowing, perhaps that is an indication that it is time to make a transition in your lifestyle. Consider these few practices to assist you in avoiding meltdowns and creating balance in your life. Delegate, delegate, delegate. Identify the tasks that can be handled by someone else with little to no micromanaging. Create organization in your office and mind. Clear out the clutter and organize your office. Surround yourself with the right tools that will allow you to effectively do your job. A de-cluttered office will lead to a de-cluttered mind and the feeling of being overwhelmed will dissipate. Manage your time wisely. When meeting, create an agenda that includes the purpose, intended goal, and action steps for all involved. When there is an agenda, you may discover that a 60 minute meeting may only require 30 minutes. Time is something you cannot get back. Therefore, managing your time wisely is important. Stop giving your stuff away. Create a healthy balance by being selective when you are giving your stuff away. What I mean by “stuff” is your time, energy and effort. The power of ‘NO’ should become a major word in your vocabulary. Take time to enjoy life. The world will not come to an end if you invest in yourself and disappear for a few days. Leave the computer at home, hop on a plane and step away from it all. Take time to remember you. You have proven that you are equipped with the skills and resource to do it all; however, that does not mean you always have to. Give yourself permission to create balance in your life by following these simple steps—you will be amazed by the overall transition that starts to take place.
