HHCA Delegation Takes on YIG By Luke Williams The first week of November, Hilton Head Christian Academy students traveled to Columbia, South Carolina, to attend the YMCA’s Youth in Government annual conference. At the threeday event, HHCA students presented their bills in front of a mock bicameral legislature. Outstandingly, no Christian Academy bills failed in either of the chambers, with most reaching the governor's desk. A few of the students' bills were even signed by the sitting Youth Governor. Notably, one of these bills, authored by Nicolas Panzarella and Ashton Tolerton, received the prestigious “Outstanding Bill Award.”Their bill sought to establish a program for convicted and rehabilitated nonviolent criminals to not be required to state that they were incarcerated when in job applications.

Youth in Government allowed HHCA students to successfully immerse themselves in the world of politics and have a fun time while doing so. When asked about their favorite part of YIG, students replied “Getting to meet other delegates” and “All of the YMCA’s activities you could do outside of YIG, but definitely not ‘MandoFun’ night. That was the worst.” Hilton Head Christian Academy Delegate Nicolas Panzarella stated, “Youth in Government was a great experience that helped me learn how to better interpret others’ perspectives while also being effective at defending my own”. While debating bills, delegates learned about different perspectives to current world issues. Youth in Government was beneficial in educating Hilton Head Christian Academy students about how government works and what they can do to involve themselves more in it. For those interested in taking government classes or just wanting to learn more about how government works, signing up for Youth in Government next year would be an amazing way to further your education.

UNIQUE CELEBRATIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD By Amy Schutz The Yam Festival: Celebrated every season in Volta Region, Ghana, this festival is known in the local Ewe dialect as “Te Za" takes place in September of each year. The festival includes a competition where different farmers present their yams in a competition to be named “chief farmer” or “Yam King.” The festival also has other events such as hiking, street carnivals, traditional dances and music, and fireworks. Its purpose is to thank the gods and their ancestors for a fertile harvest and offer prayers for good health and prosperity.

The Duck Race: Unique to the area of Alleenbrücke, Tübingen, Germany this celebration occurs in early October of each year. In this festival, a truck dumps around 7000 yellow rubber ducks into the Neckar River and each duck has a number on it which corresponds to a ticket that spectators buy. The proceeds from the bidding are for a good cause and they are given to a variety of charities. If your duck passes the finish line first, you win a €1000 holiday voucher and the runner-ups receive prizes as well.

UNIQUE CELEBRATIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD Water Buffalo Racing: Dating back 150 years, Wing Kwai, or the Buffalo Racing Festival, is a spectacular event that occurs in October in the Chonburi province, Thailand. The race is a celebration of the water buffalo, which is recognized as a symbol of Thailand’s agrarian way of life. This race gives locals a chance to get together, compete in thrilling competitions, and enjoy delicious, local cuisine. The competition itself is divided into five classes based on size-from “super junior” to “jumbo.” The premise is that the jockeys must finish the race on the back of the buffalo. If the jockey falls off, they are disqualified from the competition.

Mid-Autumn Festival: Celebrated for more than 3,000 years, this festival is the second most important festival in China after Chinese New Year. It normally takes place in midSeptember. This festival is a reunion time for families, similar to Thanksgiving. People celebrate by gathering for dinners, worshiping the moon, lighting paper lanterns, eating moon cakes, and many other fun activities. Mooncakes are a prominent part of the celebration and they are eaten together with family, or presented to relatives or friends to express love and best wishes.

A con(TREEversial opinion

The hot question of the season, a controversial topic across both the internet and among friends, is the right time to decorate for Christmas. Some people are quick to act, as they begin decorating on November 1st, the day after Halloween. If you look down the street, you will see the Jacko-lanterns replaced with bright Christmas lights and mistletoe. Most stores follow this trend too, as Christmas decorations tend to show up before Halloween. Our own Tanger Outlets are in agreement with starting the celebration early, as their lights have already been up for a couple of weeks. November 1st is unanimously labeled by Christmas lovers as “the 1st day of Christmas”; Deck The Halls and other holiday favorites play throughout the seasons. Others completely oppose this take, as Thanksgiving enthusiasts are firm and unwavering in their belief in waiting until after the holiday to decorate. Some decorate the weekend after Thanksgiving, while others prefer to wait until December 1st, the 1st day of the advent calendar. After asking around and taking polls, the consensus was that most people prefer waiting until after the Thanksgiving holiday. A benefit of this approach is the anticipation of the Christmas season. Many argue that the wait makes Christmas much more fulfilling, as the short-lived season keeps you excited for next Christmas. Another reason behind this response is that Thanksgiving and Christmas are separate holidays. The early celebration of Christmas causes many to graze over Thanksgiving and, which slightly dismisses the celebration and meaning behind it. Nonetheless, whatever decorating preference you have, the holiday season brings people together, and should be celebrated despite this debate.

After mixing the wet ingredients, add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients slowly. 4.) Add in ⅓ cup chocolate chips into the batter. 5.)
