World biosphere home to lots of trash by Trina Berlo Gerry Kouri spent a couple days last week walking the roadside on County Road 21 collecting garbage. Knowing of no local clean-up initiatives, Kouri took it upon herself to collect the trash that is dumped and thrown from car windows. She said with the area boasting natural beauty and being a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, one would think this type of activity would be encouraged by local municipalities. Having lived in New Tecumseth, where they hold Pitch-in Week around Earth Day, Kouri said she always participates in a clean-up at this time and is disappointed that there isn’t an organized activity. In the Black Bank area, one concession east of Centre Road she collected 399 beer cans, 49 beer bottles and nine liquor bottles. She also collected a bunch of other recyclables and garbage. The haul is evidence of drinking and driving, people throwing trash out their car windows and larger scale dumping. With the help of her son Seth, Kouri also found two televisions, 14 tires, a stereo, office chair, an old stove, paint cans, car parts and more. We attempted to contact Mulmur and Dufferin County to find out how they support residents who watch to pitch-in and clean up garbage in their communities but our calls went unanswered. Dufferin County does have an Adopta-Road Program. Application forms can be found at www.dufferincounty.ca/ roads-infrastructure/adopt-road-program.

May the fourth be with ducks The Stayner Kinsmen Club’s eighth annual duck race is on Saturday. The charity event raises money for the Kinsmen’s community projects. Students from seven schools are participating in the race, having decorated ducks in the theme of Clearview Township’s 25th anniversary. A corporate duck race will follow and then there is the main race with a chance to win six cash prizes, totaling $1,500. The races begin at 1 p.m. at Centennial Kinsmen Participark on Brock Street. A barbecue runs throughout the event, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be entertainment and activities, a silent auction, a beer and cider garden and live entertainment by Southern Comfort. The day starts with a pancake breakfast at the Presbyterian Church, hosted by the Stayner Lions, from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Watch out and think twice because fraud can take advantage of the most trusting people Residents are warning of a scam whereby victims receive a phone call encouraging them to send money through the mail for a chance to win a larger amount of money. It is perhaps a version of the sweepstakes scam. Canada Post warns people should never send money through the mail

if they’ve received an unsolicited notification that they have won something and always verify the offer. It is one of many scams out there. Others include the romance scam, in which someone pretends to be in love and requests money; Government scams, where people demand payment or personal information while pretending
