350 SKATERS ON THE WAY TO CREEMORE 2009 Budget Talks Begin by Brad Holden Lynn Gowan and Julie Bigham are getting ready to welcome more than 350 figure skaters to Creemore during next weekend’s two-day Central Ontario Huronia Funskate competition, and they’re hoping the hours and hours of planning they’ve put in will make the gathering an event to remember. “There’s no question, it’s going to be a bit chaotic,” laughed Gowan as she talked about the highly orchestrated schedule, which will see a constant stream of skaters from 17 different clubs across Simcoe County arriving, registering in a heated tent specially constructed for the event outside the arena’s front door, taking their turn before the judges and picking up their medals in the arena hall. The action will begin at 8 am on Saturday, January 24, continue until 8:30 pm that night, start up again at 8 am on Sunday, January 25 and conclude at 6:30 pm that night. In total, Gowan and Bigham (who are co-chairing the event) will require 147 three-to-four hour volunteer shifts to make sure things run smoothly, and while the response from the community has so far been excellent, there are still a few shifts that need filling. (See “Volunteer” on page 5)

by Brad Holden Members of Clearview Council set aside four afternoons in late January and early February to whittle the Township’s 2009 budget down to an acceptable size. Council decided Monday night they will meet on the afternoons of Monday, January 26; Thursday, January 29; Monday, February 2; and Thursday, February 5. All sessions will begin at 1 pm and will be open to the public.

NVCA Budget Rejected

Members of the Creemore Skating Club are feverishly preparing for next weekend’s Huronia Funskate Competition, which will see more than 350 skaters competing at the Creemore Arena. Pictured above are just some of the skaters, coaches and organizers making last-minute preparations. Back row, left to right: Lynn Gowan (Club president and event co-chair), Kassie Lloyd, Morgan Wilson, Madison Halliday, Rosalyn Martin, Kelsey Lammle, Julie Bigham (event co-chair). Middle row, left to right: Tanya Walker (club coach), Anna Carruthers, Hailey Sacerty, Hannah Buijs, Carlee Gowan (program assistant). Front row, left to right: Janneke Watt, Natalie Hepburn, Abby Underhill, Makenna Halliday.

With the economy in rough shape, Council gave a sneak preview of what those discussions might be like by taking a hard line with the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority Monday night, refusing to accept that organization’s proposed levy hike of 6.1 per cent over 2008. The NVCA levy is collected from municipalities within the Nottawasaga River watershed, and that money is raised as part of each municipality’s municipal tax levy. (See “Clearview” on page 2)

New Principal at Nottawasaga Creemore

A Talented Community Mary Vandewater, at far right, not only enjoyed last week’s Creemore-Centric opening at the Mad & Noisy Gallery, she also participated, submitting one of 60 works of art depicting what the village means to its residents. The show continues until Monday, February 2, and is a must-see.

by Brad Holden Nottawasaga & Creemore Public School welcomed a new principal last week, with Lorna Howlett-Lowe moving on to Worsley Elementary School in Wasaga Beach and Doug Paul arriving from Forest Hill Elementary School in Midhurst. A Collingwood native and CCI graduate, Paul taught for 10 years in Wasaga Beach after earning his teaching degree from Western and York Universities. He then switched to administration, spending a year as vice-principal in Baxter before becoming a principal at Byng Public School in Stayner, then Worsley in (See “New” on page 5)
