MAYOR TO SCHOOL BOARD: KEEP SCI OPEN by Brad Holden Fed up with a process that has seemed stacked from the beginning, Clearview Township directed Mayor Ken Ferguson to talk tough at Thursday’s public meeting of the Simcoe County District School Board regarding the future of Stayner Collegiate Institute. The meeting, which took place after the deadline for this week’s Creemore Echo, was a chance for members of the public to speak directly to School Board trustees before a decision is made on Wednesday, June 17. With the Board receiving 19 requests to speak before the May 9 deadline, a second night of delegations on the subject has now been scheduled to take place on Thursday, May 21 at 6:30 pm. A report from School Board staff has recommended that SCI, Elmvale

District High School and Penetanguishene Secondary School be closed and that students in the north of Simcoe County be serviced by three large schools – Collingwood Collegiate Institute and Midland Secondary School, which would both be renovated to accommodate more students, and a new, 1,200-student school in Wasaga Beach. That recommendation, however, is contrary to the conclusion reached by the Accommodation Review Committee that spent more than a year studying the situation. The solution put forward by the 50-plus member ARC was to keep all five schools in the study area intact and put off the establishment of a school in Wasaga Beach until student numbers in that community warrant it. CALLING ALL SWEET TOOTHS Six-year-old Sydney Lowe is an avid baker, and she’s also become very interested in helping children in developing countries. She found out about Sleeping Children Around the World when she bought a fundraising doll at Cardboard Castles, and after looking up the organization “on Mommy’s computer,” she decided she’d host her very own bake sale on Saturday, May 16 from 9 to 12 am at St. Luke’s Church. All of the proceeds will go toward providing bed kits (including a mat or mattress, pillow, sheet, blanket, mosquito net, clothes outfit, towel and school supplies) to children who will benefit most. She’s been baking brownies, cookies and muffins all week, and has been experimenting with many creative uses for sprinkles.
