JOHN CRISPO LOSES BATTLE WITH CANCER BY
BRAD HOLDEN
Clearview Township Ward 3 Councillor John Crispo died at Princess Margaret Hospital Monday night, hours after his colleague Thom Paterson read a letter of resignation signed by Crispo and addressed to Mayor Ken Ferguson and the rest of Council at Monday night’s meeting. Crispo had been fighting cancer for nearly 20 years and had endured a last round of treatment late last year. Since then, he had frequently been absent from meetings as he directed what remained of his legendary energy toward a last attempt to beat the disease. The letter, read by an emotional Paterson and accepted by Council, went as follows: “Dear Mayor Ken and fellow Councillors: “I regret having to inform you and my constituents that I will not be able
to serve the remainder of my term as Ward 3 Councillor because of a serious deterioration in my health. Unfortunately this resignation has to be effective immediately. “I wanted to continue at least until we had an official growth plan approved by the County and the Province but I cannot make it. “Now I can only hope and trust that our growth plan will be compliant with their plans and act to preserve and protect our rural character and history. “On a less serious note, if you do not hold a by-election to replace me, I hope you will select someone who shares my views. After all, I did command a twothirds majority and Thom shouldn’t be left to face you all alone. Judy Fuke lives in Ward 3. She is willing to serve if asked, and is up to speed on the issues before us. She would be excellent. (See “Crispo” on page 9)
