SCI SURVIVES FOR NOW SCDSB Facility Committee supports school despite staff report recommending closure... but Trustee says the time for community to show its support has arrived by Brad Holden In an emotionally charged week at the Simcoe County District School Board, Stayner Collegiate Institute was first thrown to the wolves by SCDSB staff and then saved by the board’s Facility Standing Committee during their deliberations about what recommendations to pass along to the Board of Trustees. The final decision is yet to come, however, with the Board meeting to vote on the Standing Committee’s recommendations on June 17. The week’s first surprise came last Thursday, when the staff report leading up to the meeting was leaked to members of the Accommodation Review Committee (ARC), volunteers who had just spent a year coming up with a public report of their own. Their recommendation – or at least the one

they came closest to unanimously agreeing on – was to leave the five schools in the areas being studied as they are, and to let Wasaga Beach try for one again in the future when their numbers actually warrant a new school. But the staff report, ostensibly the vehicle for the ARC report to get to the Board, presented a totally different scenario. Dismissing the solution recommended by the ARC as “addressing accommodation, program and building condition pressures in the short term but not addressing long term pressures,” staff instead recommended their own preferred scenario: a threeschool solution, with Stayner Collegiate Institute, Elmvale District High School and Penetanguishene Secondary School all closing and a new Elmvale/Wasaga (See “SCI” on page 12)

Spring Cleaning Time The Clearview Township Public Works department took advantage of the nice weather to get Mill Street’s sidewalks cleaned up in time for the Earth Day weekend. Here, Township employees Mike Walker and John Day do their best to strike a pose while working hard. If the weather holds up, Darpak intends to move its crews back in next week.

Get informed for Earth Day CLEAN hosts a Sunday forum on environmental issues

Smile – You’re Reducing Your Carbon Footprint! Creemore photographer Bryan Davies shows off parts of the “green studio” that he’ll debut at this weekend’s Get Growing Garden and Home Show. He’s holding a portable photovoltaic cell that he’ll use to charge a deep cell battery that will in turn charge his cameras, flash and studio lights. The results? A solar-powered “green portrait” that Davies will email to you for $5 (which he’ll then donate to the Creemore Tree Committee). For more information about the 10th annual Garden and Home show, see page 5.

by Brad Holden The wind-turbine debate will continue this weekend as part of the Clearview Eco Action Network’s Earth Day Eco Fair. But that’s not all that will be on the table. Anaerobic digesters, geothermal loops, run-of-the-river hydro projects and the concept of a smart grid; all this and more will be up for discussion. And don’t forget about energy conservation, which may be the best solution for the problems of global warming and depleting fossil fuels. The CLEAN event will take place from 1 to 4 pm on Sunday, April 19 at Station on the Green. At 2 pm, a pair of formal presentations will be made – one from David White, the anti-local-windfarm advocate from Amaranth who also spoke at the

wind power meeting that took place a few weeks ago at Station on the Green, and one from a representative from the Ontario Sustainable Energy Association, a group dedicated to implementing community-based sustainable energy projects across the province. On display throughout the afternoon will be a number of booths with tips on how you can conserve energy and reduce your carbon footprint. Also taking place during the Earth Day weekend will be a Mom-toMom Sale on Saturday at Station on the Green, from 8:30 am to noon, a Sustainable Building Presentation from 2 to 4 pm on Saturday at 178 Mill Street, and maple syrup demonstrations from 10 am to 4 pm both days beside Creemore Springs Brewery.
