BUDGET GETS SLIGHT TWEAK by Brad Holden Clearview Council approved a revised draft of the municipality’s 2009 Operating and Capital Budget Monday night, a decision that will likely lead to an official budget bylaw being passed next week. While several small changes were made to the original draft passed at the February 9 meeting, the overall effect on taxpayers – an average tax increase of 2.75 per cent, depending on the amount their MPAC assessment rose – will remain the same. The biggest change is a reduction in the capital budget by $333,000, a result of the recent Build Canada Fund decision approving only a portion of what the Township had applied for regarding upgrades to the Creemore Sewage Treatment Plant. Public works will now use only $544,000 in grant money to build an equalization tank and install a computer monitoring system at the plant. Of the six sewage processing cassettes the Township had hoped would be covered by the grant, three will have to be bought in future years. Another revision adds $8,100 for new equipment for the Creemore Skateboarding Park, with $4,000 of that coming from reserves and $4,100 coming from the fundraising efforts of several local boys led by Cole McArthur. Another change of note includes a $7,646 decrease in the surplus brought forward from 2008 due to some accounting adjustments – interesting because part of the reduced revenues were offset by a $3,300 reduction in the 2009 levy required by the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority. That organization had lowered its levy increase for this year from 6.2 per cent to three per cent after receiving pressure from several municipalities, including Clearview Township.
Community Grants Decided On Twenty-one community organizations will receive a total of $17,500 in Community Grants from Clearview Township, an increase in output of $2,300 over last year. Decisions by Council in this area were obviously not easy with more than $52,000 worth of grant money requested. Creemore-specific organizations receiving money include the Creemore Horticultural Society ($1,000); St. Luke’s Anglican Church ($600 for its Gift of Music series); Creemore Legion ($500 for next year’s revamped Canada Day celebrations); the (See “Grants” on page 8)
On Your Mark... Get Set... Go! Mayor Ken Ferguson (centre) puts on his game face as he prepares to lead a team of Council members in a “couch potato race” against a team of Clearview firefighters at last Saturday’s Clearview Township Health & Leisure Showcase. Firefighters from the Creemore Fire Hall ended up taking the overall win, and the Showcase in general was a huge success. For more pictures, see page 6.

An Accomplished Speaker NCPS student Allison McLeod has her picture taken by her mom after the Royal Canadian Legion Regional Speeches Competition last Sunday at the Legion. Neither McLeod nor her fellow NCPS representative Tristan Stableforth managed to move on in the tough competition, but both did their school and community proud.
