Greetings from the Mayor Spring at last. It’s time to get out and enjoy some of the events taking place throughout Clearview. The cover of our Spring/Summer 2014 Culture & Recreation Guide features local area activities that represents our healthy lifestyles. The Health & Leisure Showcase has been very popular event in Clearview. More than 40 organizations participate in this event to promote health, leisure and cultural activities. It is a great opportunity for health or recreation providers to highlight their programs and services as well as an opportunity for the public to try firsthand the activities being showcased. The PARC Project is part of a $315,000 Trillium grant in partnership with the Stayner Chamber, Food Bank, The Door, Garden Club and Clearview Township. The expansion of the community garden, providing fresh produce for the food bank, beautification of our many parks and gardens and a youth volunteer component, has been a major success. Now in its 2nd year, the project will add a third summer student and a farmers’ market every Thursday night with Stayner’s Music in the Park. Clearview is developing a new signature event called the “Small Halls” festival. These events will highlight art and cultural programming in the 9 community halls throughout Clearview Township. It is anticipated that the trail linking New Lowell and Creemore will be completed by the end of this year, providing an enjoyable trail for hikers, walkers and cyclists. By the end of summer, Clearview Township will be implementing its “new place branding”. Over the past year Council, staff and the entire community, have been working on a new branding exercise for Clearview and we are looking forward to implementing this new look and feel for Clearview. Clearview Township is home to a wide range of recreational activities and programs. On behalf of Council and staff, I look forward to seeing you at one of the many events Clearview has to offer.

Ken Ferguson, Mayor

Hello! As some of you may know, my name is Zoe Varga and I have been volunteering with Clearview Township to help put together this year’s Spring/ Summer Culture & Recreation Guide. I am a recent graduate from Wilfrid Laurier University, with an Honours in Communication Studies. Working to create this guide and help showcase the events, programs and activities going on in Clearview has been highly rewarding. It is great to see how much is going on in this community and the effort and passion people have for the activities they organize. I look forward to seeing you at our many exciting events and programs this summer!

Lawn Bowling

Greens are tentatively set to open May 21, weather permitting

Celebrating 90 years

Join us on June 7 and 8, 2014 from 2 to 4 p.m. For more information on this event, call June 705-445-0623.

Join the Club! It’ll Bowl You Over! 205 Ontario Street, Stayner 705-422-1870 The Stayner Lawn Bowling Club offers in-house and competitive tournaments throughout the season along with weekly open bowling Mondays and Thursdays at 6:45pm.

Equipment

One of the best things about Lawn Bowling is that it doesn’t require a lot of expensive equipment. A pair of flat-soled shoes and you’re on your way!

WHAT’S LAWN BOWLING ALL ABOUT? Lawn Bowling, or simply Bowls, is played on a large smooth grass surface called a “green”. Equipment includes your bowls, which are hard, weighted balls that do not travel in a straight line no matter how hard you try otherwise; another small, white, smooth ball called a “jack”; and a mat from which you bowl. The object of Bowls, as in Bocce or curling, is to get your bowls closer to the jack than your opponent. Information collected from Bowls Canada How to Guide for Beginning Bowlers available at www.bowlscanada.com

I live here, I work here, I play here.

The bases are covered!

Membership is open to all ages and levels of bowlers and only $50 the first year. For more information on the club, contact Gerry Cox 705-428-0706.

NEW This Fall! October 3, 4 & 5, 2014 This fall, Clearview Township, in partnership with the management boards of our Community Halls, Purple Hills Art and Heritage Society and other community and service groups will offer a new festival designed to bring our community together, attract tourist and celebrate all that Clearview has to offer. The vision for Clearview`s new signature event is a three day indoor and outdoor multi-venue event to be held at the Township’s nine community halls. The event will showcase rural Ontario traditions, culture, music, art, film and heritage in each facility. The event will encourage residents and tourists to experience all the area has to offer by visiting each hall in every hamlet, village and town within Clearview Township. The goal is to create signature programming unique to our community, which will be attractive to both rural and urban inhabitants. Each hall will showcase their traditions; rural living, music, theatre, art, dance, kids events, poetry and culinary activities. The aim is to incorporate local, national and internationally recognized talent while drawing on the wide range of experience of dedicated volunteers for a weekend of fun and learning. The event will encourage movement throughout the municipality with possible cycling, driving and hiking tours. The festival organizers desire to raise awareness of the importance of the small halls as part of our past and as an important part of a prosperous future. The Small Halls Festival will also highlight Clearview`s other unique features to attract people from across Ontario. Our beautiful town centres, farmers`markets, the Bruce Trail, Creemore Springs Brewery, North America’s smallest jail and the natural beauty of fall will all enhance the organized events. Help your community revitalize their historic halls and participate in this fun filled event!

Visit www.smallhallsfestival.ca Note: this is the event concept and event details are subject to change.

Our community halls that will be participating are as follows: Avening Hall Brentwood Hall Station on the Green Dunedin Community Hall Nottawasaga Community Hall Nottawa Memorial Community Centre Stayner Community Groups Sunnidale Corners Singhampton www.clearview.ca • spring/summer 2014 • 27

SHARE THE ROAD WE’RE ON IT TOGETHER

SAME ROADS ~ SAME RULES ~ SAME RIGHTS

Whether choosing to explore the area or leave the car at home to bike to work, school, the park or the store, with the spring and summer season upon us residents and visitors alike are tuning up their bicycles to get out while the weather is good. This means bicyclists and motorists often find themselves having to share the road. Here are some HELPFUL TIPS to ensure everyone has a safe, enjoyable on-road experience.

MOTORISTS •

• • • •

Treat bicyclists as you would any slow moving vehicle; pass only when the road ahead is clear Check for bicyclists before opening your car door Slow down and give at least one metre clearance when passing Don’t honk your horn at a bicyclist; it could cause them to swerve into traffic Do not make a right hand turn in front of bicyclists; assume they are travelling through

BICYCLISTS •

• • • •

•

Obey ALL traffic laws, signs and signals Always ride in the same direction as traffic Use hand signals to communicate turns and stops to other road users Be visible: wear bright colours and use lights in low light conditions Ride straight and in a predictable manner Yield to pedestrians

When both cyclists and motorists drive with care and courtesy, it is easy to share the road.
